Baccano rewired my 14 year old brain fr (true story) 🍾🗽🚂💰🔫

i made a sticker sheet for one of my favourite animes ever, for anime north 2023 this month! One of the drawings I did for my first ever con was Baccano, so I wanted to pay tribute. It makes me overjoyed the fandom is alive and kicking in 2023. if you can’t get to AN and you want the sticker sheet, keep an eye out this summer for my online shop!!

A lot of the media I first experienced when I was a teen was so formative for me as an artist, Baccano was one of them - and I love inputting vintage aesthetics in my art whenever possible (unfortunately not possible half of the time). I've watched the anime many times, and I'm almost done the 1st book, unfortunately I learned theres 22 other books (DW voice: I can't read!!! 💔) Planning this sheet took a LOT of work - each individual sticker composition, trashing and reworking sketches, research and visual reference, drawing inspiration from the art nouveau and art deco periods, as well as film noir era posters.

There were countless times where I regretted my choices and thought, "Oh man, why did I do this to myself?! I think I should have drawn chibis of the characters instead!!". Planning and drawing this took so long that I couldn’t envision it being complete for my deadline. But with the power of god and anime I pulled through. I'm quite happy I went with this more graphic design approach! I definitely want to try more graphic design stuff in the future, it’s a lot of fun 🤔🤔

I ended up with a completely NEW pinterest board of 125 art deco related pins over the course of drawing this... help

the flames in the “The Grand Panacea” poster were inspired by these two posters

14. If you could change one character's arc, whose would it be and how would you change it?

Oof. That's a rough one. So much of what I love about Baccano! is the how intentional the narrative is, and that goes right alongside how interconnected the narrative and characters are. Everything connects, and even the things that seem random have purpose or are random by design.

With that said, as much as I love Czes as a character and seeing his ageless knowledge have to wrestle with his very young brain, changing his arc so he didn't get as caught up with everything the alchemists did and had an element of choice with the elixir (sort of like Sylvie did) would just make me feel a whole lot better for him.

It would lessen the blow of his arcs a bit since he wouldn't be immortal in the body of a literal child, but I also don't see it affecting his actions so much that it derails the whole plot. If anything, it would help him come to realization he comes to on the train with Isaac and Miria and in the station with Maiza a whole lot sooner, and Czes does deserve love and isn't a bad boy at all. I would do that for Czes.

Also, seeing Czes interact with Jacuzzi as someone his own age would be absolutely hilarious.

It's not the first time Czes has come back from the dead in front of someone else. In front of another child, though---that's not something that happens every day, and it's probably even rarer that the sight of regeneration from something that brutal doesn't send an ordinary kid screaming.

Czes's guard isn't up because of the fact that someone's seen him regenerate. It's up because that someone is still here in front of him. Historically, people who've reacted that way have never had what Czes would call good intentions.

"I'm surprised. I think that kind of thing would have scared an ordinary kid too much to stick around for the aftermath," he comments, sizing the unusual-looking child in front of him up as much as he dares without lowering his defenses.
