Working on that bag room commission again. Today I’m doing the desk and computer.

Finished the desk top. Acrylic with the frosted glass look, a purple glitter underlay and a gold butterfly detail. Now for the hard part... making the legs.

Okay, that went well, but now we do the computer set up. It’s gonna be, shall we say, tricky.

The Chaos!

This took more tries than I am going to admit to. I blocked it off, so I could paint it, then found out my paintbrushes were the victim of the Gnomes.

I would not be stopped.

Ah, the perfect fit. You could put a laptop there, or some work papers. Options.

Also correct height. I’ll need to make some accessories. A keyboard, a mouse, a tablet pen. Oh, what have I got myself into!

The note is removable. There are parts in the back that allow papers I’ll make later to be slipped in and out to change what is being worked on. Maybe even come video game screens.

This looks good, right? Right?! I do think I’ll put a tall plant in the corner, so it gives the room a bit of green. We’re debating the chair rails vs baseboards still.

Fits in the box.

Louisville Doll Theft Update

So I posted a couple weeks back about my friend whose landlord stole his doll collection, and I have good news and bad news.

The good news is we were able to track down one of the trucks. The bad news is that it belonged to a charity donation pickup that just ended up with their clothes and furniture after everything else had been taken by the "cleaners."

After calling all the cleaners and junk haulers in the area, we've narrowed it down to two, the first admitted to working with Barrett Goff/Allodium in the past but acted a little squirrely when I mentioned stolen property and said they hadn't been on that side of town that week, but the guy was otherwise sweet and cooperative, and said company policy is to donate anything not broken. The second admitted they let their employees just grab and take whatever, then got an attitude and said they "couldn't confirm or deny involvement," and told us to come back with a warrant. They're the only ones out of the internet's entire trove of KY Louisville area junk haulers that refused to give answers, which is pretty sus.

(Who, in the course of a normal conversation, says stuff like "can neither confirm nor deny involvement"? Not sure if these guys are guilty or just extra...)

Anyway, with nothing turning up on online resale platforms, the next stop is flea markets. As they're working extra gigs to save for a new place (and a lawyer), I'm hoping to save them a PI fee by organizing a sweep with people in the area, to run through local flea markets and see if anyone's trying to sell a massive doll collection. They already can't afford HRT anymore, if they have to pay a pi and a lawyer, getting justice will get prohibitively expensive both financially and personally

If you are local to the Louisville KY area, even if you're not in the hobby, please dm me and I'll go over the ones we haven't eliminated by phone yet. They've been advised to get a private investigator, but they really don't have that kind of money lying around after being robbed and left homeless. If I can get enough Baker Street Irregulars together to help, we can let them use their savings for a lawyer.

Again, the collection is made up of mostly Ringdoll, DIM, ResinSoul/Bobobie, and some Soom. Also among the more distinctive dolls we're trying to recover are Custom House Saint Mina and LE Sad Mina, an Island Doll Shukaku ver. 2 fullset, and a secondhand Volks free choice girl with goth vampire faceup and antique-looking dress.

If anyone knows attorneys who take cases for cheap or pro bono, please contact me so I can refer them. They've applied to the ACLU, but with the organization's workload these days, it's kind of a crapshoot.

I watch a lot of restoration videos for lots of different things like whole houses, furniture, toys, electronics, old stoves etc. and over time that's changed the way I feel about customization of literally anything.

I used to struggle with changing dolls, for example, because SOMEone might want it as it is/was someday and I didn't want to ruin it.

Or I see people yelling about folks that paint wood furniture.

Or people talk about "Focus your home decor on maintaining resell value". or stuff like that.

Or like someone on Twitter threatening to steal their relative's Monster High dolls because their hair was messy like Monster High dolls aren't childrens' toys.

It took some time, but I'm firmly in camp "It's yours. Make it as you like it." because more and more I have evidence that no matter what you do to your house, furniture, toys to make them yours, there is someone out there that will be absolutely thrilled to reset it or make it theirs.

The furniture restorers bitching about paint on wood or poorly done repairs or mods, they're having the time of their lives undoing that. They're enjoying the restoration. They're having fun.

Paint the furniture if you want it painted. Someone. Someday. Will have a great time unpainting it if they want it unpainted.

Repaint dolls and chop up their hair. Someone. Someday. Will have a great time replicating the default faceup and rooting in new hair if they want it back to default.

Paint the marble fireplace if you want to. Someone. Someday. Will unpaint that, too, if they want it unpainted.

Paint your living room black if you want to paint it black. Someone. Someday. Can paint it beige again just as easily.

I want to hold tiny Bowser in my cupped hands. I want to boop his little snout. I want to give his face a big smooch. I was to scratch his head. I want to tickle him. I want to pet his tail. I want to call him adorable. I want him to learn to be content with someone doting on him.

At least until he finds a way to get the effects of the power up off.

The best thing about this is that Bowser is always the bigger one. Even in his normal form he's huge. He's used to picking people up whenever be pleases, he's used to looking down at everyone talking to him, he's used to being intimidating, he's used to being stronger.

But he can't do those things when he's small. Nope.

Is he scowling? Well that just looks adorable. You thought he's cute when he pouts normally but tiny Bowser with furrowed brows and crossed arms? That's an invitation to squish his cheeks if I've ever seen one.

Is he trying to breathe fire? It's smoke. Just smoke. A little cough of smoke, I refuse to headcanon it any other way. Or no fire at all, because where would be generate it from? He's too small to successfully grow it.

Is is trying to talk in a grumpy tone? Ha, that isn't gonna work. He's squeaking. High pitched Bowser. Better yet, High pitched, trying to be intimidating, tiny Bowser. He'd demand respect, but how can one keep a straight face when he sounds like he inhaled helium.

And just picture trying to take care of him, but less like trying to take care and more like going about your day and just tending to him whenever you get the chance. Imagine setting up a little desk and chair for him. Unless you make a custom one to fit his tiny size, he'd have to sit in those doll furniture toys. I'm pretty sure there's a barbie chair that exists somewhere.

Just - just imagine Bowser having to sit in a pink chair with a pink barbie table on a doll-sized pillow. Imagine if it's his kid's toys. Imagine his kids 'playing' with him. Tiny Bowser dress up? Does he even have the patience? I have no idea but it's the thought that counts.

And an additional though, I do imagine tiny Bowser would be a lot more squishy than his main form, and I can explain this -

Obviously when he's normal sized all his scales are normal sized too. His muscles have a defined mass to them. They're tough. Right. That mass shrinks when he's tiny. Whatever strength those muscles had, whatever resistance to pressure was present, throw that out the window because suddenly everyone else is stronger. So, no matter if he tenses his muscles, it'd be easy to just squish him. So yeah, squishy Bowser.

Oh and yeah, the second he gets back to his normal size he'd do the same thing to you because lets be honest, "two can play this game".

It’s March, which is National Women's History Month. All this month, we'l be making posts highlighting notable women and their accomplishments, as well as important events and milestones, with an eye toward the lesser-known. #WomensHistoryMonth Today in Women’s History: In 1959 Barbie doll makes debut at the American Toy Fair in New York. Designed by Ruth Handler herself and produced by her company, Mattel, the doll cost $3.00. Ruth (1916-2002) was born Ruth Moskovicz in Denver. She was the youngest of 10 siblings and was raised by her older sister. As a young adult, she moved to LA and found a job at Paramount Studio. In the 1940s, her husband Elliot Handler became interested in producing furniture out of plastic. When sales fell during WWII, they turned to producing doll house furniture, which led to toy production. The name of the company was a combo of a company executive Harold Matson and Elliot Handler's names. When she and her daughter Barbara played with dolls, she noticed a void of dolls that were anything but baby dolls. During a business trip to Europe in 1956, she saw a German doll named Bild Lilli that was the inspiration for Barbie, after some modification. She felt strongly that girls should have a doll that helped them imagine what they could be when they grew up. Part of that idea was for the doll to have breasts, which the rest of Mattel’s executives balked at. Ruth prevailed and the rest is history. Barbie’s boyfriend, Ken, was named for the Handlers’ son. Ruth underwent a radical mastectomy in 1970 and suffered from low self esteem and depression. She developed a realistic prosthetic breast called Nearly Me after having difficulty finding any good existing products. It became a very popular product and First Lady Betty Ford became a customer. Ruth was the president of Mattel from 1945 to 1975, when she and Elliot were forced out as a result of SEC investigation into fraud and false reporting. She died in 2002 from complications of colon cancer surgery at age 85.

Late last month I spent a few days visiting my parents at the same time my sister was also visiting. While there, I was gifted with something quite unexpected.

The big treehouse!

This was custom made for her in early 2021 by her sister's son, who can build just about anything from wood. But my mom never played with it or used it all unless I was there on my twice-yearly visit. It was just needlessly gathering dust and taking up space, so she asked if I'd take it off her hands, and of course I said yes.

(The porch railing does need fixing but that should be easy.)

This thing is huge, and it's sturdy. The base is a hollowed-out log. I almost don't have room for it, but I'm sure a lot of you know how that is, when you ran out of room for more dolls or doll stuff ages ago, and yet somehow you always find a way to make room for more.

She had wanted the treehouse for her Kit and Ruthie dolls, but she sold them both only a few months later, and at that point just kind of lost all interest in the treehouse.

I actually painted the exterior back in 2021 when my mom received it and wasn't sure what color she wanted it to be. I convinced her to make it look like upcycled barn wood, just like Kit would have used for her treehouse. I suggested red so I could get ahead of any ideas she might have to paint it maybe like aqua blue with greyish yellow stripes. (She and I have very different perceptions of what colors go well together.)

I plan to play around with the exterior color and turn this into a lovely little all-seasons log cabin--both a summer vacation home and a ski lodge. I've got a few ideas about how I want it to look inside and outside. I'm thinking like a nice fireplace, some cozy furniture, rustic decor, that kind of thing.
