Hey y’all! I want to start getting some of my sewing patterns up for sale, but at least for the first pattern I’d want to remake the plushie myself and, if possible, have someone pattern test it. I’m going to list the patterns I’ve written that I might put up for sale, and please let me know if any of them interest you! Especially if you’re willing to be a pattern tester - elephant (version 1 and version 2) - octopus - frog (small but detailed, with two options. Grumpy and less grumpy) - whale - mini bee - hammerhead shark - tiny skunk? maybe? - sunfish (aka mola mola) (might just make this one a free pattern, it’s pretty simple) - jack o lantern (same for this one, if a pattern only has two pieces I’m reluctant to charge for it) - a large gecko - cuttlefish - spherical bee - teddy bear but it’s a deer (also with cat and penguin options) - human teeth (molar, canine, and whatever front teeth are called) - robot - s’mores ghost (probably a free pattern) - eel (also maybe a free pattern? happy friday! I recently finished crocheting this sunfish! They are probably one of my favorite aquatic animals along with the leafy sea dragon. These fish can grow up to 6 ft tall and apparently like to sunbathe (that’s where the name comes from). Their main diet is jellyfish and have one of the thickest skins that is covered in mucus instead of scales. They’re skin is also extremely prone to parasites so they get a lot of cleaning sessions from other fish and birds to maintain their skin hygiene! Because they are such a huge and heavy fish, they don’t really have a lot of predators. And according to Polynesian legend, it’s considered bad luck to eat them :) I hope you guys like it! I’m so happy with the way it turned out hehe

This is a personal post, but I don’t mind if you comment on it and stuff. Just be aware it’s about my specific life and my specific situation and shouldn’t be extrapolated to all lives and situations everywhere, because it won’t work.

For the last few days I’ve been thinking about my mom’s funeral and I’ve been insanely angry about it. The way her sister acted was a travesty, but I’ve long since made my peace with “NJ is scum and I shouldn’t be so shocked, this is just more of her usual self-aggrandizement and narcissism and I’m just lucky my mom had a best friend worth twenty of NJ who adopted me as a nibling.” And I couldn’t understand why, four months later, I’m still so angry.

And today I realized: not my aunt, MY MOM’S aunt.

My mom was an English major who was actually invited to speak at conferences. I put a piece of her writing in her casket, because it was about her mom and I knew it would be a comfort to her. She loved to crochet and at one time, before the arthritis made it impossible, was very nearly a master. I put a hook and thread in her casket because if there is indeed a better hereafter, she’ll need a doily to decorate it with, and what a joy for her that she had fingers to work it with and eyes to see. She loved to fish, so I put a pack of hooks in there, too, the right size for the perch and sunfish she loved to catch and fry up.

And this lady, her aunt, who claimed she was “extremely close” to my mom, said my dad put those things in there. Trust, my dad didn’t have the MINDSET to do that. He’d just lost his wife of just-shy-of-twenty-years. I took care of the memorial cards and the phone calls to the funeral home and the playlist of her favorite music and the things in her casket because he had enough to do with paperwork and taking care of himself in the face of a completely unexpected death. If she was “extremely close,” she would know that we were tag-teaming the funeral because neither of us could handle it alone.

And as she was explaining what was in there to me like I was a perfect stranger, she said my mom “wrote something one time.”

MY MOTHER WAS A POET. MY MOTHER GOT THE ONLY A+ HER PROFESSOR HAD GIVEN IN TWENTY YEARS FOR AN ANALYSIS OF THE LOVE SONG OF J. ALFRED PRUFROCK. MY MOTHER WENT TO SPEAK AT AN ACADEMIC CONFERENCE ON ENGLISH LITERATURE IN INDIANAPOLIS. MY MOTHER WROTE A PIECE THAT WAS FEATURED IN A BOOK BY DELILAH THE DEEJAY. MY MOTHER IS A PUBLISHED AUTHOR, NO MATTER HOW SMALL.

My name is Nina. I have my mother’s hair and eyes and hands and nose and gaptoothed smile and her father’s unruly eyebrows. People seeing photos of us at age eight and ten and nineteen struggle to tell us apart and until I hit my mid-twenties I occasionally was approached by my mom’s old coworkers who mistook me for her.

And you dare, you dare, to look at me, at me, and tell me you were so close, so close that in thirty-two years I never met you, and say she “crocheted sometimes” and “wrote something one time”?

And to tell me, to my face, that you’re ashamed her daughters didn’t show up?

My sister was having emergency back surgery. I was literally being told I didn’t show up, while I was there.

Extremely close, right? So close you didn’t recognize me from pictures? So close you couldn’t see my mother in my face? Yes, okay, I was in a mask, but ALL THE WOMEN IN MY FAMILY HAVE MY GRANDMOTHER’S EYES. (And so do my uncle and my brother.) HOW can you look into my eyes, into your eyes, and not know who I am? And then claim you’re “extremely close”?

Of course, I answered her saying we didn’t show up with “I’m her daughter.” And she just kinda....ignored it. It didn’t fit her narrative, so la-la-la.

And I shouldn’t be so angry, because she can be a miserable little twit by herself, but I keep coming back to “she wrote something one time.” And how disrespectful. How disrespectful. My mother went to her English 101 professor in 1995 and said “Professor McAndrew? What’s an essay?” She told him she’d dropped out in tenth grade, and she could write him an essay, if he’d just tell her what it was, and she gave it her all, and she graduated on the Dean’s List having been a speaker at an academic conference.

And I just. I’m angry. I’m angry. I was there. I helped organize the funeral I supposedly wasn’t at. And this woman, this “extremely close” relative, disrespected my mother that way. Oh, she was close enough to ride in the family limo that NJ insisted on renting in front of everyone and paused the funeral announcements for, and to kick me and my mom’s best friend and would-be sister out of said limo.

But she didn’t even know my mom wrote poetry.

Just.

Fuck you, Patty. And if you’re wondering how I know you hate being called Patty, it’s because I, unlike you, listen when my family speaks.

Hey y’all, I’m almost at another follower milestone! I’d like to share a free pattern with y’all, but I’m not sure which one to share. I am probably not going to remember all the options, but here are the ones I’ve made that I can think of (feel free to suggest some) - hammerhead shark - Fred, the Fish of Minimal Effort - sunfish - Large Frog - giant pear - giant apple - if anyone really wants the round bee pattern, I can share it but I have to make another prototype first to check the pattern because I made that before I knew how to use a sewing machine and on some of those pre-sewing machine patterns I was kind of compensating for pattern issues by changing the seam allowance without noticing? So I have to fix that before I share it - I’m sure there are more patterns I’ve written but my memory is not great lol - a crochet pattern instead?

Short term: - finish the Minecraft bee and share the pattern - finish the rainbow quilt - make a purple llama centaur - make my sister a pair of slippers for Christmas (I’m late on those) - format at least one sewing pattern to share (either the sunfish or the cat to start) Long term: - bat-nana - that spider I have partially finished sitting by my sewing machine - that phoenix where I sewed some tail feathers and they are somewhere? but idk where - Bucky Barnes for the MTH auction winner - LabraThor’s cape for the MTH auction winner - a mermaid - more dnd commissions! hopefully! - a lion - a dragonborn - a sparkly princess dress for the dolls I’ve been making, just because I can - share more sewing patterns - maybe make a patreon for sewing patterns? because they are kind of unwieldy to share on tumblr. At least make a pdf version available of sewing patterns. Also my crochet patterns? and like, have polls of what pattern I should make next, or something - sell more stuffed animals because I am seriously running out of room - the Postcards From Sweden quilt (it’s so pretty!!!)
