Like, don't get me wrong, I love pretty much every companion in the Mass Effect series. But Kaidan is the character of all time. There's literally nothing that I latch onto harder than a level-headed bisexual man in his 30s. He's literally perfect.

So, unlike the other ask I just answered.... I do stuff like this all the time. Because I am a tiny little angst demon. This doc is a collection of emails Kaidan sends Shepard after he dies in a post-synthesis ending to the war.

Joker tried to refuse but Admiral Hackett wouldn’t hear any of it. Vega accepted without any argument, but he didn’t seem as happy about it as you’d expect him to be. They’re rebuilding the Villa, and he’s set to be part of the first post-war N7 class. He’s a lot less exuberant these days, but when he talks about that he’s got this fire in him. He wants to make you proud and I know he will. He’s a damn good marine. You always did know how to pick them. We’re all still adapting to how everything has changed. At least the green patches have faded. It doesn’t feel as strange looking in the mirror. It’s so weird to see the Reapers actually helping rebuild things. I mean, they repaired the damage to the Citadel in less than a month, and they’re working their way through the Relay system. That’ll take longer. Every relay in the galaxy was rendered non-functional by the Crucible. God, I feel like I’m filing a mission report. Pretty sure I’m supposed to be talking about my feelings or something, not updating you like you’re still my commanding officer. Not sure I’m ready to do that yet, though. It’s still really raw, you know. You’d think the fact that I’ve already done this once would make it easier, but it seems to be the opposite. I miss you. Kaidan

7. what character did you begin to hate not because of canon but because how how the fandom acts about them?

This is hard for me because I don't tend to let the fandom at large affect how I feel about a character beyond privately to my friends being like "he would never" and whatnot. I don't actually have any ME characters that I hate that the fandom at large doesn't also seem to dislike. I think for SPN, it would probably be Sam. I don't really hate Sam either, though.

I say this with the most love possible because I do love him, but Garrus. Specifically because I feel like a lot of the blorbofication of Garrus involves ignoring his flaws as a character and making him just a guy that's obsessed with Shepard, and it does a great disservice to him as a character that is very flawed and much more complex than that.

It's also where the idea that post-war Alex, during his period of traumatic mutism, writes Kaidan letters every day. There's a snippet here from another ask about it, but I'll drop another one on this ask :D

14 Feb 2187 CE, 23:12 GST Message from: Capt. Alenko, K. Message to: Cmd. Shepard, J. Today’s been hard. You know, Valentine’s Day and all that. I’m still on extended shore leave, so I’ve been staying with my parents. Unfortunately, that means its a lot easier to see people celebrating the holiday.  I don’t how I’m ever going to get past this, Shepard. After everything we went through together, I just really thought we might finally get to have a happy ending. I keep expecting to have a response from you every time I open a terminal. Or something from Command saying you’re actually still alive on some planet in another system and it just took some time to find you. I mean, we never found your body. Even though I know there’s no way you survived that blast at such close range, there’s a part of me that can’t help but hope, you know.  This is so much harder than… last time. Going through this a second time… opens the old wounds. I started having nightmares again. Nothing as bad as yours were, but bad enough that I’ve been avoiding sleep. Probably part of why the doc won’t clear me for active duty. I wish she would. I’m going stir crazy stuck here. Before all this, I’d always planned on coming back to Earth. It was home, you know. This is always the one people ask about when I do this game. For the record, I really don't usually write much PWP. And its truly not my fault that someone in one of the discord servers I am in shared a gif a someone crushing a watermelon between their thighs. It is definitely not my fault that Shepard popped up in my brain wanting to lick watermelon off of Vega until Kaidan said he did a good job cleaning up.

The way Kaidan kisses James is nothing like the ghost of lips John had gotten. He pulls James’ body hard against his own, and his hands wander down James’ back and over the perfect swell of his ass. John’s breath hitches in his throat, and he resists the urge to palm his swelling cock at the low moans Kaidan pulls from their lover with his lips, teeth, and tongue. Most of the time, John could watch them like this for hours. Tonight, though, he’s antsy and impatient. For the headcanons — Kaidan Alenko? 😊 if you’ve gotten that one already, then maybe Tali?

For Kaidan:

Sexuality Headcanon: He's canonically bisexual, and I generally make an effort to make sure he's written that way when I write him. We don't do bi erasure in this house. Gender Headcanon: Male A ship I have with said character: mShenko, Venko, Willenko are my top 3, but I also very much enjoy pretty much any Kaidan ship. I just love Kaidan haha A BROTP I have with said character: Kaidan and Joker. There's for sure a rough patch there for a while, especially with a shenko romance, but they have such a rapport immediately in ME1 that it's impossible for me not to see them as bros. A NOTP I have with said character: Kaidan/Tali. They have very sibling energy for me. A random headcanon: I generally hc that the biotic spec ops squad starts during the 2 year gap and that Scott Ryder was one of Kaidan's students. General Opinion over said character: I think he gets underestimated a lot, and I think that's something that he'll take advantage of in the right situations.

For Tali:

Sexuality Headcanon: Heteroromantic demisexual Gender Headcanon: female A ship I have with said character: Talibrations for life tbf. I just really enjoy Garrus and Tali as a couple, I think they play very well off of each other and Tali would keep him in line and Garrus would treat her like a queen. A BROTP I have with said character: Tali and Kasumi. I think they'd bond over tech nerdery and a love for romance novels and movies and be very close. A NOTP I have with said character: Tali and Kaidan. Like I said. Big sibling energy imo A random headcanon: Tali absolutely writes Fleet & Flotilla fanfic. General Opinion over said character: Love her so much. She's a great stabilizing force, I think, because out of everyone that's been around since the beginning, I think she's got the most level head.

listen, I love the "baby in a trench coat" line as much as the next guy. In context. But I think the fandom at large has taken it way too far and tried to turn Cas into this guy that's basically powerless and/or incompetent, and that's not who he is. He's both incredibly powerful and competent. And largely the instances in canon where he might seem otherwise, it's because he is holding back intentionally due to some moral quandary or concern about alienating Dean and Sam.

Top/Bottom discourse, my beloathed. I hate it with the fiery burning passion of ten thousand suns. I would yeet it out of the universe were that possible. Who tops or bottoms in a relationship is not that fucking important, and the fandom tends to use the whole thing as a different way of asking who the girl in the relationship is and I fucking hate it.

I feel like you've chosen violence by picking this one haha. I think the most compelling argument I have for one of my faves never bottoming is for Jack. Given her history with relationships, particularly sexual ones, I don't think she'd want to do anything that makes her feel like someone else has even the slightest bit of control over her.

Obviously people are allowed to have preferences, I certainly do, but istg if I have to see one more conversation about Ashley being a space racist or Kaidan being boring, I will actually scream and maybe throw my PC through a high window of the nearest skyscraper.

pls share ur mordin + translator headcanon. which language is mordin speaking. why is his syntax the way it is

My headcanon for this is pretty simple tbf. I am a firm believer that Mordin's syntax is the way it is specifically because he's not being translated. It's kind of along the lines of like... when someone is speaking English, but their first language is something like Russian (and several other languages) which does not have prepositions. So where I, a native English speaker would say "Get in the car", they might say "Get in car".

So basically his syntax is what it is because he's speaking (in my verses) Alliance Standard but with the retained habits of the syntax of whatever salarian language he speaks.

What would you change about the leviathan?

Honestly? I don't fully know. The one thing I actually can say that I would change is that the Leviathan don't need to still be alive. There being Leviathan still around poses complications, primarily what do you do with them after the war. You've got these giant mind controlling creatures that have still been active mind-controlling people. And sure, maybe they ally with you against the Reapers, but what happens when the Reapers are no longer a problem? When the Leviathan are still using their weird balls to mind-control people? Do you commit yet another genocide in the Milky Way about it? Because at the end of the day, I don't think there's a real way to get them to follow the rules of the galaxy as it exists in 2185 if they don't want to. So, its a big loose end that I do not like. And honestly, its kind of unnecessary narratively, imo. Like you could still have the narrative of finding out they created the Reapers etc without actually coming across any living Leviathan.

For me personally, I don't think its necessary to explain where the Reapers came from at all. It changes nothing. It has little impact on the narrative. But I am willing to keep it around because I really dig the whole creepy horror vibe of the DLC. Creepy Space Horror is my jam. In fic, I generally tend to apply that kind of creepy horror vibe to Something Else (which changes depending on what exactly I am writing) and just throw all of the Leviathan narrative in the bin haha

I guess my major problem with it is that its something that creates more questions than answers, and in the endgame narrative, that's not really what I want, especially when its in the last part of a trilogy. It just feels very unsatisfying to me.

12. favorite character to write about this year

Jackson Shepard, by far. I didn't write about him as much as I did about other people this year, but he grabbed me in a choke hold, and I've very much enjoyed writing him. I can't wait to write more of him, to be honest.

Oh gosh. I've read so many good ones, I am honestly not sure I could narrow it down to just one. I think, if I can only have one favorite, its going to be Pheonix by @mallaidhsomo. It's just so god damn good, and I am madly in love with Sidney Shepard haha
