they had a bamboo shark too but she was swimming too fast to get a good picture of her :(
there were two kinds of rays though! the one hanging out up top had white spots and the others chilling near the bottom didn’t, plus they were shaped a little differently. i’m not a ray expert but i looked at some pictures and i think the one with spots might have been a spotted eagle stingray? the spots and the shape seemed to line up to me but idk for sure. if anyone here knows more about stingrays than me let me know if i’m wrong. i tried to find a list of what they had there but I couldn’t find anything :(

YEAHHHHH LETS GO FISH TIME!!!!
the tench looks so O___O its very funny also i love any animal with a stupid repeating binomial name (gorilla gorilla....). i wont lie i dont know what a pharyngeal plate is (i HAVE heard of pharyngeal jaws tho) and i fr thought that was a slug or something before i noticed the teeth
those sturgeons are soooooo silly i love when animals have mustaches
the crevalle jack looks like he swims fast as fuck he looks right at home on a salt life t shirt or something
the monkeyface prickleback looks like a mudskipper but even sadder somehow. maybe hes sad that he doesnt even get to walk on land like they do
sadly the surf smelt is not my favorite because it just looks like a sardine or anchovy and i think those guys both taste bad and look too normal. i do still respect small schooling fish tho they look pretty all together like that. do you know if these guys are cleaner fish at all?
i didnt even know there was a man of war FISH thats fucked up. i watched this video of the dudes from hivemind (my fav youtube channel rn) learning about weird sea creatures and god SO MANY of them are just named after land animals we dont need to start naming them after other sea creatures too 😭

Costa Rica
We had a trip planned for Costa Rica this January and I put two Roosterfish charters on the books to try again for one of my bucket list species. I decided on two because last time one day wasn't enough and I wanted the extra in case the first day didn't work out.
I won't go into great detail here about the remainder of the trip, but Costa Rice wildlife and jungles are amazing.
Tumblr media
Our yard was filled with Agoutis.
Tumblr media
Three different species of monkeys regularly came by the house as well.
Tumblr media
Some cool crabs from Manuel Antonio.
Almost as if it was destined to happen, the first day charter I took out for Roosterfish was a total bust. Not a single fish was caught the entire day. I honestly think this is the first charter I have ever been on where nothing at all was captured. Usually, I will get something or help with catching bait. I was now down to my last charter and last chance again to get the Roosterfish. This would be my 3rd charter specifically booked for this species.
Unlike the day before, we started off catching bait and I hooked several Pacific Thread Herring (Opisthonema libertate) and added them to the live well. If nothing else, at least I had caught one new species.
Tumblr media
Species #316 - Pacific Thread Herring (Opisthonema libertate)
After trolling the beach for a few hours we finally got a hit and I pulled in species #317 - the Pacific Tripletail (Lobotes pacifica).
Tumblr media
Not long afterwards I got a good solid hit and, after a couple jumps and a very nice fight, I finally pulled in species #318 and bucket list species #2 off my list - the Roosterfish (Nematistius pectoralis)!
Tumblr media
It felt great to finally knock this one off the list and I told the captain mission accomplished and anything could happen now.
Over the course of the next few hours I landed the following species:
#319 - Longjaw Leatherjack (Oligoplites altus)
Pacific Crevalle Jack (Caranx caninus)
#320 - Pacific Sierra (Scomberomorus sierra)
Pacific Sierra was one of the species I lost at the boat in Acapulco back in 2017, so it was nice to finally get another chance at one.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
To end the day we went trolling back at the spot with the sardine bait ball and just as the day was ending I hooked into a heavy bite and reeled in what on any other day would have been the catch of the day.
Tumblr media
Species #321 - the Whitefin Weakfish or Whitefin Corvina (Cynoscion albus).
I caught 7 species on the day and 6 of them were new. I also got my target of Roosterfish and a bunch of awesome species. It was a great day out and a great trip. 2024 is off to a good start.

Epic First-Time Catch! Young Man Hooks Enormous Jack Crevalle with Captain Jeff
There's something magical about the ocean during the fall mullet run—a phenomenon when schools of mullet migrate down the coast, attracting various predators. For one young man, named Alex, this fall would be unforgettable as he embarked on a fishing expedition with the experienced and knowledgeable Captain Jeff. Little did he know that he was about to have the adventure of a lifetime, capturing a colossal Jack Crevalle on the beach.
Setting the Scene:
As the sun began its descent into the horizon, painting the sky with hues of orange and pink, Alex and Captain Jeff prepared their fishing gear on the sandy shores. The excitement in the air was palpable, and Alex's heart raced with anticipation. The cool breeze mixed with the scent of saltwater, creating the perfect ambiance for a day of fishing.
Meeting Captain Jeff:
Captain Jeff was no ordinary fishing guide. With years of experience navigating the waters and a genuine passion for the sport, he was a treasure trove of knowledge. Alex felt lucky to have him as a mentor for this extraordinary fishing trip.
Chasing the Mullet Run:
The fall mullet run had attracted an abundance of predatory fish, including the mighty Jack Crevalle. These powerful creatures were known for their aggressive nature, making them a challenge for even the most seasoned anglers. However, Alex was determined to rise to the occasion.
As the sun continued its descent, Captain Jeff led Alex to a spot where the mullet run was particularly active. Schools of mullet darted through the water, creating a frenzy of movement that signaled the presence of larger predators lurking nearby.
The Battle Begins:
After carefully selecting the right bait and casting his line, Alex felt a sudden tug that nearly yanked the fishing rod from his hands. His heart pounded as he struggled to control the powerful force at the other end of the line. Captain Jeff's encouraging words echoed in his ears, reminding him to stay calm and focused.
For what felt like an eternity, Alex engaged in an intense battle with the elusive fish. The Jack Crevalle fought ferociously, leaping out of the water and testing Alex's endurance. With each surge of adrenaline, Alex drew strength from his surroundings—the crashing waves, the cries of seagulls, and the unwavering support of Captain Jeff.
The Triumph:
Finally, after what seemed like an eternity, Alex managed to tire out the formidable Jack Crevalle. With skill and finesse, he reeled it in closer to the shore, where Captain Jeff was ready to assist. As the giant fish came into view, Alex was awestruck by its sheer size and beauty. This was indeed a catch of a lifetime.
The Lessons Learned:
Beyond the thrill of the catch, this fishing expedition taught Alex invaluable life lessons. He learned the importance of perseverance, patience, and teamwork. The experience deepened his connection with nature and fueled his passion for conservation, as he realized the significance of preserving these beautiful creatures and their habitats.
Conclusion:
As the day drew to a close and the sun finally dipped below the horizon, Alex couldn't help but feel grateful for the once-in-a-lifetime experience he had shared with Captain Jeff during the fall mullet run. The memory of catching the colossal Jack Crevalle on the beach would forever be etched in his heart, inspiring him to explore more of the ocean's wonders and to cherish every moment spent in nature's embrace. And so, with a renewed sense of wonder and a pocketful of unforgettable memories, Alex and Captain Jeff walked back from the shore, ready to embrace the adventures that tomorrow might bring.

This allows you to look, touch and feel the various components. While the above rods are our favorites, we stock standard handcrafted models covering the various fishing circumstances. It will match up with your favorite freshwater spinning or bait casting reel. It is amazing what we catch and the fun we have doing it with this rod. We have also used this rod on yellowtail snapper and bonefish.

Sometimes in the evenings after everyone has settled down, we take this rod and a hand full of jigs or bait and just poke along the surf line. It is a lighter rod than OB's Shrimp Rod. OB's FSS&FAR Rod is built on a 7-foot blank that will handle up to 1-1/2 ounces quite nicely. We have even "snuck" it out on the pier for Spanish mackerel when folks weren't watching. It is designed to offer you a light, medium action rod for flounder, spot, whiting, specks, pompano and other such tasty fish. OB's Flounder, Spot, Sea Mullet and Foolin' Around Rod This rod is a one-handed spinning or casting rod, which ever you prefer. This rod will make you look like you know what you're doing even if you don't! You will be asked, "where did you get that?" We can throw from 2 ounces up to 8 ounces.

It will easily handle six n' bait, plus a wide range of lure weights. This rod is as versatile as they come in a high surf rod. Upon special request we can build this rod in casting configuration with or without a reel seat for clamp-on reels such as Penn Squidder and Newell. It has a rubberized cork wrapped handle and fixed reel seat. OB's Surf Rod is built on a 10-½ foot graphite blank with high performance, high frame match guides. Jack Crevalle, king mackerel, and red drum have all fallen victim to its power. This rod has also seen service on the piers of south Alabama and the Florida panhandle. So, he and his buddies have designed a rod that anyone can use and catch fish with in the high surf. He prefers spinning tackle because he is getting too old to toss eight n' bait. OB's Personal Surf Rod OB fishes the high surf of Hatteras Island, Ocracoke and Portsmouth Islands. Due to the popularity of this rod, there is a waiting list. This rod is not for everyone, only those brave enough to tackle big fish in big surf in all kinds of weather. "Da Heaver" by OB Custom Rods is an 11-foot graphite casting rod designed to toss "eight n' bait' and not kill you in the process. You need a rod born and reared in high surf country, made by surf fishermen who know what you require. When the big red drum cruise the rips, more often than not, they are just out of reach of folks with ordinary rods. The only other rods that require this type strength are offshore rods for tuna and billfish. This requires a rod unequaled in strength and dependability. For the uninitiated, "eight n' bait" means an eight ounce sinker with six to eight ounces of bait. "Da Heaver" Cape Point, South Beach, Oregon Inlet, Assateague, Chincoteague, Cape Charles and Ocracoke all mean big fish to the priests of the high surf, specifically, fishing for red drum with "eight n' bait". The high frame match guides that spiral around the blank will enable you to cast accurately and with more distance than your ordinary rods. The Poppin' Cork rod is made from a 7-foot graphite blank and has a special trigger handle. When battling big fish this unique guide placement ensures that the line never contacts the blank and increases casting distance.

The Poppin' Cork Rod from OB Custom Rods features the revolutionary "acid wrap" or "spiral wrap" that has become the darling of the professional bass circuit. This rod has lots of backbone and is no sissy. The Poppin' Cork Rod This is a bait casting rod designed specifically for throwing a popping cork and shrimp or artificials such as Mirrolures® and Zara Spooks®. Below are some of our special purpose rods. These rods will hold up to the tough elements of a 3-5 day surf fishing trip, camping on the beach with little fresh water, and the constant 15 to 20 mph wind and sand storms of the southeast coast of Texas, as well as the cold wet beaches of the Outer Banks. The blanks chosen and components used on these rods are of the highest quality available on today's market. We surf fish from the coast of Maine, the Outer Banks in North Carolina, and all the way down the East Coast to the Gulf of Mexico.
