Every king eventually brings out their own money. The Pendragon crest is naturally on one side, but the King's face normally goes on the other.
And Arthur does that, or intends to. But when he talks to the guy who is meant to get his profile, Arthur can't help but ask what kind of other symbols he could use. At first, he asks if he could put other people on it, then he figures that it would probably be too controversial if he put a face on the coin that isn't his own.
Then he asks if it could be a bird, like his mother's sigil. Originally, he wants to honor her, but then Merlin walks in to gather his clothes and it suddenly strikes him that Merlin has done so much for him, and never gotten any reward.
And Arthur doesn't mean his servant work, Merlin is rubbish at that. But what about his council? His advice? The fact that Merlin always speaks his mind, yet always has Arthur's and Camelot's best interest at heart. The fact that Merlin always goes out of his way to fight alongside Arthur, despite not being a knight.
In an emotional outburst, (after Merlin left again) Arthur orders the coin guy to make the other side of his coin a Merlin.
Right after that, he realizes what he's done and drowns his embarrassment in wine.
A couple weeks later, the money is created and put out into the kingdom. And everyone immediately connects the dots. The symbol is only on the golden one.
The day Merlin finds out is a normal day at first. Only that everyone is staring holes into his head and whispers about him. Merlin has been send to get Arthur's new shirts and hands the tailor a golden coin. He hands it to him, then stops and stares at the crest.
....
Merlin: Arthur???? What the fuck is this?
Arthur: *sweats* your salary?

1: Magic is a Metaphor < 2: Morgana is a Lesbian < 3: Merlin is Gay < 4: Arthur is Bi
Do you remember when you were bullied in middle school? Because if you're reading this, I think it's fair to assume that you were. And your parents would say to you, 'that boy is just being mean to you because he likes you'. That's what this is.
Arthur is just so repressed. He has really bad daddy issues, and he doesn't know how to express his emotions, and he's really uncomfortable with physical intimacy, especially with other men, especially with Merlin. And this isn't me trying to psychoanalyse away his heterosexuality. It is a very evident part of his character.
And another big part of his character is that he has inherited all of these bigoted ideas about magic from his father that he has to work to overcome. Because, of course, Arthur himself is born of magic, but his dad is so ashamed of it that he hides the true circumstances of his birth from Arthur. Honestly, I don't know exactly how that would fit into this whole metaphor. I do have a half-formed theory that it could be interpreted as an allegory for intersex identity, I know that a lot of people headcanon Arthur as trans, so idk there could be something there. But regardless, it is only through his relationship with Merlin that he is able to overcome this magicphobia, because he realises: how could it be wrong when everything about Merlin is so right. And I just feel like there's a metaphor in there somewhere.
Of course, I have to mention this iconic quote from the audio commentary of the final episode: when the executive producer refers to Arthur taking off his royal seal to give back to Guinevere as passing over "the last vestige of his heterosexu- oh sorry, I mean his marriage." So, they knew exactly what they were doing.
I also thought I would just draw your attention to the fact that at one point Arthur says, "I only care about my men, they're more than friends, more than brothers." Now, I think we can all agree that out of context, that is a very gay thing to say, and yet somehow the context is even gayer, because Arthur is pretending to be talking about the Knights of the Round Table, but he's actually talking about Merlin, how Merlin is the only person he cares about, more than a friend. And then Merlin responds, "I understand. I wish I didn't, but I do." It's barely subtext at that point. This of course, brings me to my final argument:
Arthur risked his life to save Merlin at least eight times. It could be more than that, I genuinely lost count. And you have to keep in mind that Arthur is the King of Camelot and he doesn't have any heirs. It is quite important that he stays alive. And yet anytime that Merlin is in the slightest bit of danger, he will just drop everything to protect him.
And it's really only in those moments where he's faced with the thought of losing Merlin that he shows him genuine emotion. Such as in this scene (which was cut out of 4x02 purely because it was too gay) where Arthur is planning to sacrifice himself to protect Merlin, again, and he gives Merlin his mother's sigil, the only thing he has left of his dead mum and he wants Merlin to have it as something to remember him by. Also, apparently in medieval times giving someone your family crest was basically a marriage proposal, so that's pretty gay.
You know what else is pretty gay? Telepathically communicating with Merlin and then immediately leaving Gwen in the middle of an active war. This is literally the last time that Arthur and Gwen ever see each other. Poor Gwen.
In conclusion, Merlin is the story of gay sorcerers and bisexual knights getting into love triangles. Everyone in this show is queer and you cannot tell me otherwise.

Its finally done!!!
After getting back into BBC's Merlin recently (read: a couple months ago) I realized I no longer trusted streaming services to still have it available long term and managed to buy a complete DVD box set.
But because the slip case had quite a bit of wear to it (and due to some minor scopophobia) I made it a box that looks like a book!
(More rambling info & video under cut)
Materials:
The base construction is cardboard and paper (used to cover the exposed cut edges and strengthen corners). The box's faux paper edge is a printed texture on cardstock that was then waxed. The interior is black cardstock with silver vinyl. The 'book case' is that same cardboard construction with faux raised bands (made with some scrap foam I had) wrapped in Cialux's night blue bookcloth (hence the minor wrinkles) with Cricut HTV in metallic gold and 'reflective rainbow'.
Design:
Cover: Obviously Pendragon logo had to go front and center, no argument on that one. (Also partially cause Merlin doesn't really have his own symbol to him? The triskelion just doesn't make sense to me because although Emyrs is a symbol for the druids, Merlin himself isn't a druid and I'd imagine would instead choose icons of Camelot and Arthur to represent himself besides.) ANYWAY-
Behind the crest, filligree containing a blade and the sidhe staff in that subtle reflective HTV that blends into the bookcloth exactly how I wanted until it catches the light (something something, hidden magic in the background something something).
(Appologies for the unsteady hands)
Spine: Mortaeus flower! Because it really felt like a turning point for the two (you've known each other... what a week? and you're going against your father to travel to some far off cave to get a flower?? that's some good as dnd-adventuring-party type shit I love it). Minor detail are the top and bottom shapes: pulled from some cool windows we see a lot in season one (I just think there' neat, okay?)
Back Cover: Excalibur with two butterflies cut from the blue-toned area of the rainbow HTV :)
And finally the Inside!: The cup of life! Because it felt just a little empty. I'm still tempted to put something small on the bottom left corner of the inside cover... maybe a crown? not sure yet

The sigil has nothing but sentimental value to Arthur it means nothing else and has no other worth. It is not the royal seal!!!
I’ve seen people say it technically counts as a marriage proposal but he didn’t give him HIS sigil it was his mothers. His mothers when she was still with house of de bois which Arthur is not. If he had given him his sigil with camelots crest on it, it would’ve technically counted I guess.
Also no one knows what the de bois crest looks like because when Tristan crashed through nobody but uther and gaius recognized it. so no one would see it on Merlin and think anything of it.
So In those fic where something happens to Arthur and Merlin is forced to take over as regent the sigil wouldn’t solidify that because once again it’s not the royal seal.
Now if you’re wondering what does solidify a spot as regent at least in Camelot it’s the ring he gives to agravaine in first episode of season four which is the same ring he gives to gaius to give to Gwen in the last episode. That and only that counts a sigil from a dead house means nothing to Camelot.

At MCM London a couple weeks ago, Zig, LG, Lawn, and I did a BBC Merlin-adjacent (our own versions for our new tabletop game) cosplay. I embroidered three Camelot crests using YouTube videos for stitching guidance. Pictured is the prototype on the orange poplin and then the finished results. A Merlin cosplayer clocked the badge I was wearing on my bodice and we stopped to chat.
It was dope and I’m pleased as punch that these turned out SO WELL, especially for my first freehand embroidery project.

Merlin Loregasm Rewatch S1E2
Hi Everyone! Welcome to my rewatch of Merlin focusing on the lore. I am a giant nerd so pretty excited about this. Time for VALIANT!
So this brings up heraldry in the series. We see Arthur using Camelot heradlry, and other knights doing the same but during tourneys, we see Lots of different other patterned shields. So either people usually use the shield of their overlord in battle but their own in tourneys Or no knights of Camelot besides Arthur appear in tourneys. (I think Lancelot will make this a bit clearer when we get to it.) Either way either this is Valient's family crest, or he serves someone with a family crest. Either way it makes sense for why he murders this dude. As the shield is KINDA a dead giveaway to his identity. (And we know he is a knight or at least is acting as one and pulls it off better then Merlin's later first attempt at identity theft.) They obviously do not require patents of nobility at tourneys because Gwen, Arthur and Merlin pull off a fictional Knight later just fine.
I think he is likely a knight because ARMOR IS EXPENSIVE Y'ALL.
He also says he is from the Western Illes. Because the island of Mora And Ealdor this is the first place we hear about besides Camalot.
Does he mean Ireland? I think he means Ireland?
ALSO! are you used to my messed up grammar and punctuation yet? I have an LD in both. This is why I always need Betas for my fics despite creative writing being my thing. (I mean besides just wanting them to be better.) (This is an example of autistic oversharing. You are welcome! BACK TO MERLIN!)
So we only see this kinda sparing with Merlin in armor and holding a sword and shield once. (Usually he just holds a target for arthur) However, Merlin does get better with a sword somewhat as the series progresses so I think it likly continues. (Though perhaps a bit more nicely) It's interesting because Arthur has his pick of people to spar with, we see that later. Yet he says "Most Servants collapse after the first blow" So who is he sparing with? Has he been given manservants he didn't like before and just used this to make them quit? ANYHOO this was not as much lore so will not often comment on character dynamics but yesh.
Okay so I will spare you the talk of different armor parts. BUT this is really interesting compared to mentions of "Camalot forged steel"
See many Castles would have their own blacksmith and the one in the villager would be more for horseshoes, nails, and the like. Because armor and weapon making was A BIG DEAL
This implies Gwen's father was a HIGHLY SKILLED blacksmith who likely served the knights of Camalot. (He can't have been the only one because when he dies there is a period of time before Elyan comes and in Gwen's words Gets the forge running again.) But for a regular blacksmith to serve as an armor and weapon maker is a BIG DEAL that kinda knowledge was highly specialized! And yet Uther killed him easily.
OKAY time to nerd out a bit!
This is quartering, an advanced heraldic tradition in which an individual for some reason or another wanted to show MORE than one coat of arms they were entitled to. You guys should look all this up, its fascinating! But onward!
Okay yeah remember what I said about Gwens family likely descending back to the Roman times? It's still possible but if Arab knight equivalents can get to Camelot then her family could totally have come from northern Africa for other reasons.
Also I like the dude in Mauve having an Anglo-Saxon Helm and the due behind him having one from the 1100s I love Merlin's stew of things from all over history.
Okay this is perhaps just Uther being an ass. Because I'm sorry if you are not the king of Mercia I refuse to belive you are the king of Ireland. (Albion is not united yet.)
Perhaps its mostly knights of Camalot here with some exeptions?
I mean if we are creative with the dude CLEARLY of the middle east we can say somehow became a noble of camalot. It would explain a few things. Did Valiant come from Ireland (Sorry I mean The Western Illes) originally then somehow for reasons we will not question also moved to Camalot? (Unlikely as Uther asks him to stay later.)
There are also very few people here so likley perliminary tournaments were held? I mean we do see in Lancelot people come from all over to try to be knights of Camalot. so THEORETICLY Uther might be being honest here?
Okay this guys helm is the same as the Arab dude we saw before I think he just took his outher coat off. BUT And some of this gear is very European. So Camalot somehow has an Arab noble family that fights in ancestral gear when they can OR he got repairs along the long journey to Camalot in local styles. Take your pick!)
(You know because I can't be normal and just say they throw this in for visual appeal.)
Something to note! This would normally be the job for a Squire. A Squire was also usually the step before knighthood but in the Merlin world they do not seem to exist!

Arthur barely spoke, which was thankful enough. Merlin didn’t think he could dredge it all up again, lie again, not this early in the morning. He let himself be carried back as his eyes glassed over, reeling silently as he swayed in his saddle. At first, he couldn’t hear Arthur’s voice saying the words, in his mind’s eye - but if he really focused, if he shuttered his surroundings away, he could just see it: the three hooded figures, Arthur in the misted cave, a promise. Each time the image materialised, it brought a sheer warmth that would start to weave itself along his arms, tingling into his veins- only inevitably to fall into his stomach and settle there, heavy and sick. His palms itched with sweat, the leather reins digging into his palms as he attempted to curb the urge to turn his horse around. The inside of his mouth ached where it had been bitten raw.
All too soon, the creamy faraway turrets of Camelot swayed into view above the treetops - and upon spotting them a violent clench of panic dropped onto Merlin’s chest. He kicked his heels quickly, gathering speed and rode up alongside Arthur. The king’s gaze remained on their path ahead.
"Arthur." Merlin started, firmly.
"Merlin.” Arthur returned, just as firmly.
Merlin kicked his horse a little more, definitely not pretending it was a certain blond king.
"Arthur," Merlin grit through his teeth. "Are you sure?"
Arthur’s sigh was just audible over the rough pad of the horses’ hooves on the forest floor.
"Are you telling me you'd rather see a friend die," the King replied, monotone, solemn.
A friend? Merlin had forgotten-
In a other life, maybe.
"No, but-"
"But what, Merlin. For god's sake." Arthur finally turned to look at him.
Excuses were drying quickly on Merlin's tongue. He dropped his gaze to where Arthur’s hands seemed to be holding back the temptation to rip the reins in two. Merlin held back the temptation to shake the king until he fell off his horse.
With an unsteady voice, he tried to push Arthur, asking, you’ll repeal the laws, then? Let magic return to Camelot? What did he want to hear?
"...is that what you really want?" Merlin said, then winced. The pathetic, pleading tone in his words; hopefully it wasn’t discernible. Arthur didn't respond.
A faint murmur of crowd rose from over the castle walls that swayed ever closer. He pushed again, throwing increasingly agitated comments across the space between them, like, how will the people react?, and- you can’t expect them to welcome back magic overnight, and after a while, it’ll be dangerous- you, you have to con-
“I know!” Arthur yelled, suddenly glowing with rage. “You think you know how to run a kingdom?"
Merlin held firm, his eyes burning.
"That’s not what I meant.”
Arthur’s gaze was just as solid, blue meeting blue. The crowd’s murmuring roar was cresting over the walls.
“Don’t let me stop you, Merlin.”
Fury buzzed in head. “You,” he started, “could have at least-”
“What.” Arthur snapped. “Spit it out, christ, it’s like talking to-”
“Don’t cut me off then!”
“You’re- you…”
“What. What! What am I?”
Arthur spluttered, “Impossible. I swear to gods…”
Merlin’s chest heaved. He glanced between the approaching gate and the king next to him. Camelot was breaking into view on their direct path now, forest peeling away into vast yellow fields. Merlin bit his lip.
All of my father’s work -
“Why did you change your mind?” he said finally.
Arthur just stared. A small line was creasing between his brows, and when he spoke, it was after a long moment of his blue eyes bearing into Merlin’s, and his voice was calmer, quieter.
Maybe the old ways -
“Who says I’d changed it?” the king said.
Merlin huffed and turned away.

"Quite," Narcissa replies.
It is somewhat baffling that out of all the wizards in Avalon, it is a New Blood who lives worthy of the standards of Camelot etiquette, as she does; Narcissa is grateful she discovered this truth before another pureblood witch did.
Soon enough, when the sun crests the horizon, she and Mister Peter Evans will swear themselves to one another, and their glorious future will begin.

The black knight:
It's tournament season once again in Camelot, and this time, Crowley has decided to make his way into the city to compete. He easily forges some documents, proving his royal lineage using one of his miracles. This would be his first time in the city, though he had heard many tales of how 'great' the kingdom is. That remains to be seen... He never did particularly like authority figures.
He makes his way through the crowds, milling through the town up towards the castle. Some knights are already in front of him in the queue to sign in, but it should be his turn soon enough. He holds his documents in his hand, along with the crest he had made for himself, consisting of a snake wrapped around a black sword.

overall fgo is alright but some parts of it is straight up incredible HOWEVER all of it is seriously held back by being a gacha mobile game and has to work around that limitation

WITCH ON THE HOLY NIGHT
now this is peak. the most gorgeous tm work by far i have to say its simply an incredible read all around. even tsukire did not look or work or sound as good as mahoyo did even tho it came out almost ten(?) years after
on the story front i loved it too with a special shoutout to soujuuro being one of my favorite characters in TM (i say this often not my fault type moon keeps releasing bangers)
however mahoyo has two issues for me:
the story is clearly incomplete: i dont mean its just nonsense or whatever but when nasu said its the first of a trilogy you can just feel that in the story with alot of things being left in the air. this wouldnt be an issue really if mahoyo 2 wasnt basically dead....
i didnt vibe with the slice of life scenes as much as i usually do in nasu works: this isnt a flaw in the story more so i just didnt like em idk how else to word that
mahoyo is a great read however and i highly highly recommend you read it or else

ok fr tho its actually incredible and you should read it right the fuck now
all of the characters are simply chefs kiss. while the visual novel is incredibly dated and the art is even worse you have to understand this is nasu and takeuchis first ever visual novel made on a barely existing budget.
boy do they make up for that.
the vn is split into two with a near side and far side.
while the near side is really good with arcueid and ciels route (ignore how ciel was actually really fucked over even in her own route its laughable and my girl deserved better) the far side is so much more better and really is where the soul of tsukihime and shiki the main character lies
i cba to review it properly besides saying PLEASE READ IT RN or ill cry and you dont wanna see that do you....

what is there to be said about such a masterpiece? what else could be written about fsn that hasnt been written before? i am but an ant in the shadow of the giant that is FSN only seeking some crumbs to feed and live off of. idk what that means but it sounds cool.
FSN is simply tms best work all around. while i prefer tsuki over it and find the tsuki side of TM more interesting FSN overall is much stronger on most fronts but especially its main characters
Shirou emiya is simply the goat nothing else to be said tbh

KT had such shit comedy i didnt even giggle throughout it but THIS
THIS is a emotional rollercoaster of a whole different kind.
introducing the third (arc and medea are first and second) love of my life Bazett and angra we go through an incredible main story intermingled with hilarious and wholesome slice of life scenes that never overstay their welcome
this vn completely changed my opinion on some characters especially illya who went from someone i was kinda 50/50 on to adoring her overall
ALSO MEDEA SCENES YES I WON MOTHERFUCKERS I WO- huh? whats that? fgo basically replaced her with medea lily?

TSUKIHIME REMAKE
im not a fan of remaking classics on the level of tsuki. with all its flaws i still find the original to be good enough to not need a remake...
UNTIL I READ THE REMAKE
this is how you do it folks. the story was elevated on nearly every level and if it was the complete story id say its the best ever in existence ever forever fr. its just that good.
there are three things i really want to point out:
while maybe goin overboard i really liked the buffs all the characters received and in general the whole worldbuilding is so much better now with idea bloods and principles and vampire hierarchies and arcueid inflation scenes (heh) its just epic
ciel got a so much better route that actually feels like a ciel route and not just arcueid route 2 electric bugaloo (and getting fucking cucked)
noel is peak
this is peak type moon and when red garden comes out it will be even BETTER especially with satsuki route because satsuki deserves it
there are some other short stories i havent mentioned like garden of avalon, notes, MAGNITUNING (look it up you wont regret it) its all great and worth the time of reading
eventually i wanna play CCC and read some other stuff like maybe prillya DDD, fgo jp like lb7 traum and whatnot
i just wrote this for fun so dont really take anything i say seriously except for the teeny little part where im inherently correct.

Surprise poll! I won’t check this very often, but I’m trying to decide what tournament to run next. So I am putting out a list of other animation companies next to 1-3 recognizable franchises or movies. The next polls should run sometime during 2024, so keep an eye out :).
REMEMBER: I will only be holding a tournament for movies, not tv shows.

Order of summoning and circumstances of some summoners and servants(mostly just Artoria and Tart)
Illya was brought to Fuyuki during the fourth war and thus aged normally and also acquires the Emiya crest. She summons Archer at the cannon time then starts badgering Shirou to summon Saber.
Shirou, with help from Illya, Sakura, and Rin has a better time with his magecraft and picks up blacksmithing after learning his element and origin. He summons Saber a week after Illya.
Rin summons Caster who, after parsing the Great Grail war Rules, drags Rin to the Emiya household and tells Shirou that he will teach him everything he knows after barging in and explaining things, much to the concern and confusion of Illya, Shirou, and Sakura, who was staying over that night.
Sakura is rescued from her canon fate by the magus tradition for siblings that share a soulmate being having the sibling that doesn't get the crest find their own path. She summons Rider the next day
The other three masters of red are found and brought to the Emiya Household.
Artoria is much better mentally with Camelot lasting beyond her reign, the Lancelot-Guinevere affair being openly being between soulmates with one in a political marriage, teaching Mordred to be a good king, and her deal with Alaya being for the ability to reach her soulmates naturally(see Lion_of_Avalon's Pursuit of the dream on AO3https://archiveofourown.org/works/34621243/chapters/86187268)
The Magia Record plot happens and is resolved/averted a year after the end of Homura's timeloops, leading to there being a doppel field encompassing all of Japan by the time of the grail war. The Wings of Magius eventually figure out how to reverse the transformation into a Witch and soon Wraiths start to spawn within the Doppel field.
Kyoko Madoka and Oriko summon their servants while Homura is in Europe looking for Catalysts.
For Catalysts Homura finds Riz's Witch and Mordred's lance, and potentially a few minor catalysts for the others.
Sayaka summons Mordred expecting her to be Saber/Lancer, but gets Saber/Avenger because of Morgan le Fay having Been summoned as Caster of Black.
Homura is the last of the Purple team to summon as she needed to purify Riz's Greif seed into a soul gem, get a new body for her, and then finally enlist her help in summoning Tart.
