Things you said with too many miles between us

Cress sighed and collapsed into the small chair in her room. What a day. She knew it would be a long job making an entirely new security system for the New Beijing Palace, but she couldn’t turn down Kai’s request. Besides, it was good practice for a possible future where she went into programming. She didn’t really mind do it - but it was new to her. It was actually slightly easier than hacking, in some aspects, but she had never learned complex programming before. She found she had quite a knack at it, but that was after many long hours in front of bright screens and miles of coding.
She rubbed her eyes and leaned against the back of her chair. She nearly dozed off right there until her portscreen played a small tune, and her eyes shot open. That was the sound for a requested vidcom, and she knew exactly who it was.
She accepted the call and propped the portscreen against a lamp, tugging on the ends of her short hair out of habit. Once the image cleared and she saw Thorne’s blue, blue eyes, she smiled, all tiredness forgotten.
“Hi, captain.”
Thorne grinned roguishly. “Hi, damsel. How are you faring?”
Cress rolled her eyes. “I’m fine.”
His smile became more caring, but still a bit teasing. “How’s the job? Is it easy? Are you making loads of Univs?”
“Oh yeah, loads and loads for a volunteer job. And it’s all good. A bit harder than I thought, but I’m quickly getting the hang of it.”
“Is Kai treating you well?”
Cress scoffed. “Aces, Thorne-” she gestured to her room and king size bed that was way too big for her- “he couldn’t be nicer. He’s given me this enormous suite and more food than I can eat. He’s been moping sometimes, though. He really misses Cinder, you know.”
Thorne shook his head sarcastically. “Tell him to get over it!” Despite his strong display, she knew he also missed his best friend. “I’m missing you too! Wolf and Scarlet keep being all lovey-dovey and whispering sweet nothings to each other. It’s annoying.” His shoulders sagged a bit. “Well, it’s annoying without you.”
Cress felt the heat rising to her cheeks, and she gave a small smile.
Thorne shook his head at her expression. “No, seriously, Cress. I’ve never missed someone so much. Not even the Rampion when I was in prison.” His expression became somber. “Aces. I miss every part of you. Your hair, your laugh, your hands. I never knew I could miss something this much. It kind of hurts.” He laughed, but it was bitter. “How does Kai do it?”
Cress knew her cheeks were blushing furiously red, and her heart was beating very, very fast, but she bit back a loud exclamation of love. He didn’t need that right now. They could do that later.
“Hey,” she said, touching the screen as if he could feel it, “I miss you too. A lot. But it’s only for a few more days! And we’re being efficient. I’m finishing this up while you distribute the antidote at - at the Western Province of Russia. We’re killing two birds with one stone.”
He grumbled. “Why are you so damn smart?” Cress heard a loud noise on his end, and he looked up with a small smile. “I gotta go. Scarlet’s yelling at me for something. I, uh, - I love you. Stay safe.”
With that, the call disconnected. Cress whispered to the black screen - “I love you, too.”
