Larrea tridentata, is also called creosote bush or greasewood. Medicinally it is known as chaparral. In Spanish it is known as gobernadora because it can secure more water by inhibiting the growth of nearby plants. In Sonora, it is more commonly called hediondilla which is related to hediondo, which means ‘smelly’. This is fitting as the plant is largely responsible for the smell of monsoon rains in the Sonoran desert. . . . . . #creosote #creosotebush #greasewood #chaparral #desertrain #yes_busa #rebels_united #rebels_nature #shotonnikon #shotonnikond3500 #tamronlens #tamron90mm #tamron90mmmacro (at Phoenix, Arizona) https://www.instagram.com/p/Cj1lwA9rf4Y/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

The Seven of Antennae card emerges as a powerful symbol of resilience, fortitude, and the unwavering commitment to protect one's position in the face of adversity. It tells the story of an individual who stands alone, yet resolute, defending their ground against formidable opposition. This card teaches us a vital lesson in the art of unwavering determination and the courage required to assert ourselves even when the odds seem stacked against us. It speaks of the innate human spirit that refuses to yield, the courage to hold firm when challenges mount, and the strength to rise above it all.
The thistledown velvet ant, a remarkable species of wasp, encapsulates this very essence. While most wasps in this genus flaunt vivid colors to ward off predators, the females of this species employs a dull muted appearance, coincidentally resembling the fruit of the Creosotebush. This seemingly paradoxical strategy serves as an emblem of the card's core message. Their muted hues are not solely a shield against predators but also serves as a form of thermoregulation, a useful feature in their native arid desert homes. This adaptation reflects the mastery of harmony with their environment, just as the Seven of Antennae encourages us to confront life's obstacles not merely with confrontation, but with the wisdom of adaptation.
The thistledown velvet ant is solitary in nature. They teach us that strength can be found within, even in the face of isolation. Strength isn't always about displaying aggression or dominance; it's often about finding clever, unassuming ways to persevere. By blending into their surroundings, these insects demonstrate that sometimes, the most powerful responses to life's challenges are the ones that arise from careful observation, adaptability, and the ability to withstand the heat of adversity.

Shadows on Death Valley Sand Dunes
Mesquite Flat Sand Dunes are at the northern end of the valley floor and are nearly surrounded by mountains on all sides. The primary source of the dune sands is probably the Cottonwood Mountains which lie to the north and northwest. The tiny grains of quartz and feldspar that form the sinuous sculptures that make up this dune field began as much larger pieces of solid rock. In between many of the dunes are stands of creosote bush on the sand and on dried mud, which used to cover this part of the valley before the dunes intruded.

The white-throated woodrat (Neotoma albigula) is a species of rodent in the family Cricetidae. It is found from central Mexico north to Utah and Colorado in the United States. The animal lives mostly in the Upper and Lower Sonoran life zones, occurring from pinyon-juniper woodland in higher country to desert habitats at lower elevations.
As with other species of woodrats, the white-throated woodrat constructs middens of a variety of materials such as sticks, cactus parts, and miscellaneous debris. An above-ground chamber within the midden contains a nest lined with grasses and kept free of feces. In non-rocky areas, the den usually is several feet in diameter and most commonly built around the base of a shrub that gives additional cover. In areas of rocky outcrops, crevices often are utilized, with sticks and other materials preventing free access to the nesting chamber.
The white-throated woodrat is generally associated with creosotebush, mesquite, cacti (particularly prickly-pear and cholla), catclaw acacia, and paloverde. These plants provide cover and succulent plant food (>50% water by weight), the 2 most critical habitat requirements for white-throated woodrat. White-throated woodrats prefer habitat with low tree canopy cover, high shrub and rock cover, and coarse woody debris. When available, natural and human constructed riparian habitat may be used by white-throated woodrats.

Orla, Reeves County, Texas Population 2 Orla is a ghost town that sits on the far western edge of the Great Plains. It was founded in 1890 as a section house for the Pecos Valley Railroad. El Paso lies 175 miles farther west of Orla and the Pecos River creates Red Bluff Reservoir 10 miles north. Traveling to Orla makes you feel you have wandered into the far reaches of Nowhere. A vast, arid, and empty country. You have to wonder at the tenacity of spirit that held settlers here. Dry creek beds carved with the 10 inches of annual rainfall, creosotebush, sparse grass, mesquite, and cacti make up the landscape and tumbleweeds catch in the barbed wire fences. A place of unique and lonesome beauty.

Desert Salve :::::: for suggested use in wounds, burns, skin irritations, fungal infections and scars. I have made some version of this blend for years now, and folks I have given it to swear by it. My dad works out in the sun all the time and gets sun blisters and damaged spots from years of outdoor labor and he will put this salve on his face and neck as a mild sun protection, and to tend to the spots that seem to take forever to heal. A friend burned his face a few years ago and used this salve after and it greatly reduced healing time and scarring. I have personally stopped a yeast infection in its tracks, without the use of pharmaceuticals, but with this salve as well as straight chaparral oil, which is one ingredient in the blend. Not to say it is a cure all by any means- what works for some people may not work for others, I am merely stating what I have witnessed from its use. Like any plant- some folks could be sensitive to its medicine. I have heard stories of this sensitivity with the use of chaparral, cottonwood and sagebrush, though they have been commonly used by native folks where they grow for any number of external, internal or spiritual ailments. The smell of this salve literally takes me to the desert itself, as if I am tucked under a Creosote Bush after a storm or Cottonwood on a hot day. If you’re interested, this herbal medicine will be included in June’s land capsule shares, to be sent out the first week of July.
