In Louisiana Afro Creoles and Free black women dressed elegantly and decorated their hair with feathers and beautiful jewels. With their new freedom they used their clothing and their hair to embrace their femininity. The majority of Afro Creoles and free black women married free men of color and raised families with them. They were also getting attention from white men which threatened the fragile social order and angered many white women because now Afro creoles and black women were being recognized as beautiful and becoming big competition to white women.
So, In 1786 Governor Esteban Rodriguez Miró passed a law called The Tignon Law, that forced Afro creole and black women to cover their hair with cloth called a Tignon. Virginia M. Gould said that Esteban hoped the law would control women “who had become too light skinned or who dressed too elegantly, or who, in reality, competed too freely with white women for status and thus threatened the social order.” However, the intent behind the Tignon Laws took a different turn when Afro creoles and black women turned it into a huge fashion statement. The vibrant colors of the scarves and the many wrapping techniques enhanced their beauty instead of marking them inferior to white women. Even in the early 1800s when the Tignon Laws ended, free women of color continued wearing the tignons.

1941 is when Dooky’s Chase opened. The restaurant was originally a sandwich shop and a lottery ticket outlet. It was then switched to a bar and then after that became this family-friendly restaurant. This restaurant was the hangout place for music, entertaining, and civil rights in New Orleans, Louisiana. It was the place to go to have discussions that involved the issues of civil and economic rights in the African American community near New Orleans, while also discussing the ones throughout the entire country.
In 1946, Edgar Chase Jr married a woman that goes by the name Leah Chase. From there Leah turned the restaurant into what it is today which is a sit-down restaurant surrounded by African American art and Creole cooking. She was known as “The Queen of Creole”. She was the one that first introduced the first African American dining in the Country. The restaurant was the first Art gallery for black artists.
It did take Dooky’s Chase two years to rebuild their restaurant after Hurricane Katrina. They had a lot of help with the rebuild which helps make the restaurant the most authentic for Creole Cuisine.
The food was amazing as you can probably tell from the pictures. Some things i can't even remember what they are called, but we were able to go to the buffet and pick what we wanted. The catfish just fell off the bone which was awesome. The sausage was good. They also served gumbo and fried chicken and they gave us Peach Cobbler as a desert. Talk about phenomenal. I was definitely in a food coma after this lunch.

What made this lunch so special though is the fact that we actually got to meet Leah Chase. What a sweet woman she is. She turned 97 years old 2 weeks ago and she happened to be in the restaurant when we were there so she was kind enough to come out and talk with us about life in general, boys, and the restaurant.
Leah Chase was born in Madisonville, LA and she was one of fourteen children. Talk about a big family. Chase was in 6th grade when she moved to New Orleans. Her first job was working at a restaurant on the French Quarter and that’s when she started to really love food and serving others. In 1946, she married Edgar and eventually, they took over his dads business and made it what it is today. Dooky’s Chase was the only restaurant in New Orleans where all race was welcomed to come in and discuss the local Civil Rights Movement. This was illegal going through the 1960′s.
Leah has received many awards from NAACP, New Orleans Times-Picayune 1997 Loving Cup Award, the Weiss Award from the National Conference of Christians and Jews, as well as, the Outstanding Woman Award from the National Council of Negro Women and many more than just those, but just to name a few.
Tumblr media
She is an amazing woman who is living a very long life and has experienced it all. It was so cool to actually get to hear what she has to say and it was so special to see her and see the happiness that filled the room with how happy she is with her restaurant, where it's at, and how it has really grown throughout the years.
Delicious food. Amazing people. Awesome memories.
Watch this video on Leah Chase as she talks about authentic Gumbo!

Wow every year we say it “This is the best HexFest ever...” and we’re all ready saying it again about HexFest 2019. Last night was a beautiful, enchanted and relaxing opening party on the magical Creole Queen... highlighted with a moving ritual blessing, Invocation of Isis and offering to the River conducted impeccably by Alexandrian The Witches of New Orleans. Creators and hosts of HEXFEST, Brian Cain and Christian Day and their team have kicked the crystal ball out of the park again! This weekend is going to be pure Magick! 🖤✨ my first workshop #MagickOfYouOracle Divination class starts at 9am today!💫 #hexfest2019 #hexfest #witchlife #witchesofinstagram #magickal #magickallife #magickalcommunity #happyjoyousandfree #creolequeen #paddlesteamer #nola #modernwitchesdaily #witchery (at New Orleans, Louisiana) https://www.instagram.com/p/B0-_lCfhPKe/?igshid=14bpc3nkl4gv6
