honestly, what bothers me so much about the screw the gods attitude both in show and out is that in Exandria specifically, the gods are impotent. They don’t interfere with daily life, they can only do the bare minimum by providing clerics with spells and once in a while making a mortal their champion. very rarely they can perform miracles, but that’s very rare and mostly in before the campaigns.

There’s a goddamn reason (pun intended) that the dawnfather didn’t just rush in and suplex vecna into oblivion when he started getting godhood aspirations. There’s a reason the Stormlord didn’t burn Obann to a crisp the minute he looked at his barbarian daughter the wrong way.

That’s literally how it is because after the Prime deities stomped the betrayer gods for the second time, they created the divine gate and went away. They chose to limit their power on the prime material plane and keep their asshole siblings away from the world.

literally everything bad in people’s lives is due to other asshole mortals or sometimes demi-god entities like like Uka’toa or the Traveler (archfey). Not the gods on high.

am i about to catch up on every single episode i missed of campaign 3 of critical role just so i can get some queer women content??

yes

its gonna take so long. im so behind. i stopped watching A WHILE AGO. and then i watched some of the eps around the solstice. and then stopped again. so i have like 40-50 episodes im gonna have to watch to fully catch up

but you know what? imma do it for the gay content. cause I am starved. cr is really the only place i can trust for consistently good queer content anymore. everywhere else gets canceled and/or killed off so... and like yeah, the characters can die in dnd, that's part of the game. but its not like they would die because a studio exec would cancel the show otherwise or because a showrunner wanted to do it for 'shock value' you know? and none of it is gonna get cancelled for 'tax write offs'.

so yeah, imma catch up on c3 even though i haven't been able to get as invested in the characters as i was with c2. cause now that imodna is confirmed (real and true), i need that queer content in my life and i aint just gonna start watching again without getting all the context. I will however probably maybe start watching live again when i can as i catch up so i can be there for moments going forward cause that was one of my favorites parts of watching beauyasha in c2. but yeah, we'll see

congrats imodna fans! I've been rooting for you and i'm glad you have won so thoroughly on this day. I hope to become fully immersed in this ship soon and I'm excited to dive back into this fandom again!

Hi! Uhhh. I see you freaking out about critical role all the time and I'm intrigued. Would you like to tell me a bit about it? And where would you recommend starting to watch (or is it listen??)? Right at the beginning?

Hey! I’m glad my ramblings have gotten you intrigued. Critical Role is a web series featuring a wonderful cast of voice actors who play Dungeons and Dragons (aka D&D). I’m not sure how aware you are of D&D as a whole so I will give a brief intro to that. D&D is a role playing game typically set in fantasy worlds. Dice are used to determine certain actions and their success. CR is set in Exandria, a world created by Matthew Mercer, who is also the Dungeon Master for their games. Essentially, he is the narrator and organizer for the campaigns.

You can listen to it as a podcast, or you can watch their videos on YouTube! Personally, I prefer watching it because you can see their reactions to things, as well as see the maps Matt creates for combat.

There have been 3 main campaigns so far. Each one features a different party of fun characters. They used to livestream their episodes on Twitch and Youtube weekly every Thursday night at 7pm (pacific time). Because of the pandemic, they switched to pre recording them.

They now stream every thursday night, except for the last thursday of the month, since campaign 3 started.

Where to start? There are a few options:

Starting at the beginning with campaign 1 is perfectly fine. When it comes to D&D, sessions can take hours to complete. It's wild to see how long the episodes for CR are at first, but you get used to it.

The nice thing about each campaign is you can jump into them without having prior knowledge!

For campaign 1 (aka c1) there are 115 episodes. Some audio issues are present, and there is one disruptive cast member that leaves pretty early on. Some fans will say to skip to ep24, simply to avoid these early issues. Ep 1 or ep 24, either works.

Alternatively, if the ep count intimdates you, and you like animated series, you can watch The Legend of Vox Machina. This show covers the entire campaign (so far it has covered the first 50 eps) in a shorter format. It's great.

Campaign 2 is where I started my journey into critical role, and it is the longest with 141 episodes. Audio issues are resolved and the beginning is smoother. We have confirmation of it getting an animated series, but we don't have dates for it yet. I will always recommend watching c2 at some point, because it is truly a lovely story. Take your time with it.

Finally, campaign 3 is also a place you could start. It is currently airing, having 70 eps at the moment, so you could catch up the quickest here. This one does reference c1 and c2 a handful of times (characters, places, plotlines) so without context it could feel confusing. I don't think it is absolutely necessary but I know I prefer having context to things. Mind you, I haven't watched c1 in full, only c2. c3 has been very enjoyable to me all the same.

If you do start with c3, I would recommend watching Exandria Unlimited Prime (an 8 episode miniseries, the dungeon master being Aabria Iyengar), and the first season of The Legend of Vox Machina before you get into the campaign. It will provide insight into some of the references you may miss otherwise.

:((( yeah, cr 2 is a lot... I watched it while it was airing and I started 40-50 EPs in? Like when they were coming out? I hyperfixated on it and got it all down in less than a week, but still, it was so much!

I would really recommend sticking through it though, these characters really have so much charm and play off each other so well, it really is a thing of watching a group turn into a family and really truly learn to care about one another and become better people. It was beautiful and wonderful to watch if you can manage to sink your teeth in :)

before the episode starts. I just gotta say the Ruby Vanguard’s plan is stupid, they are idiots for going along with it. Ludanis probably has something up his sleeve like he knows something about predathos and the solstice that the others don’t but the others are idiots for going along with this shit.

it’s a bad plan. Unleash a god eater into the world because... and what’s to stop it from eating existence once it’s eaten all the gods. for some reason they believe that it won’t eat them which is stupid. They believe it won’t come after them because they’re not it’s prey, but that’s not how hungry creatures are. When things get hungry enough they will eat anything and everything they can when Predathos runs out of gods to eat it will go after what it can to try and sate it’s hunger. It’s not going to just stop once the gods are dead and in its belly

and even if they could somehow make the first part work, Exandria is literally the worst world for this to happen on. The gods are separated from the material plane by the divine gate because the good deities beat the betrayer gods. They aren’t ruling exandria like god emperors and can’t even walk among their followers. They can’t do much and it feels like dumb spoiled wizards who are pouty that clerics get magic of their own that they can’t use. The stormlord couldn’t save Yasha even though he wanted to when she was being used to free the chained oblivion. Why does the Ruby Vanguard hate the gods so much when they’re so much freer than most fantasy worlds. Even if they don’t know about other worlds it’s like someone complaining about God taking their legs when they drove drunk. It’s whiny and I hate them.

One of my favorite things about Aabria DMing within the universe of Exandria is that, as she puts it, “gets to say stuff and it’s true!”

Like the lore drop that Gilmore is a part of the secret council of Emon in ExU ep 3. Ashley looks directly at Matt and asks if they/she already knew this and Matt just shrugs. It’s really cool to see Matt get to discover his world and sides of his characters with the rest of the cast as a PLAYER. There is something magical about it because for a large part of this game, he knows about as much as the rest of the players do. He gets to learn as they do, as we do!

And you know what this means… in the future, it’s something Matt can build on in his own games.

I’m living for the cooperative storytelling.

Crit Role Miniature Rollout: C2E132

An archive and review of the minis used on CR.

This ep was neat and all. But next ep, that’s what I’m really interested in! I’ve played in sessions like this before, where you are anticipating a particular plot point and fully expecting it to occur that session. But then the game’s progress gets held up by a less story-crucial encounter. On the one hand, the resource management aspect of dealing with encounters such as climbing and this random undead giant encounter is admittedly interesting. BUT- I’m really chomping at the bit for the encounter with the Tomb Takers! Let’s go, can’t we just auto-battle this frost giant fight?

The Terrain

I like the starting positions of this combat. So many encounters start with the monsters on one side of the map, the PCs on the other side, then the movement and fighting plays out sorta predictably as both groups spend the first couple turns moving towards one another and then standing in place and slogging it out. I appreciate a fight that starts with all members of the battle right on top of each other and with the adventurers right up against an impassable wall. Quite refreshing.

The Giants

The pose is about all I like about this undead giant. Reminds me of an arcade fighting game idle animation. So what did this giant die of? Probably having too tight a helmet. The proportions this dude are really bizarre, his head is way too small. And he’s got these weird lookin’ long Gumby legs. Not good.

Production and design wise, it’s pretty clear the 3D modeler just copy pasted the shoulder pad skull, flipped it 180° and clocked out for the day. Like, where did this giant find two perfectly identical outfit-accessorizing skulls? Did he happen to fight a pair of dragon twins?

What can be said for this figure is that it is indeed giant. It looks very imposing on the map next to the PC miniatures. The scale of this model definitely works for the overall look of this combat encounter.

Skeleton miniatures run the risk of looking stiff and uh, well, lifeless. But this model has a very animated pose. I like it very much. The hanging fur clothing even has a billowing sort of effect to it. You can imagine the howling northern winds whistling through the hollow skeletal frame of this towering undead. It’s great. What’s not great is the amount of money this model is currently commanding online. $50 minimum at the time of posting. Probably better off taking your chances with the boosters and hoping you draw one of these. Or wait until an unpainted version is probably released down the line.

Look at all these hot frost giant fashion drops. THREE dragon skulls? The swag level is off the charts! I enjoy this frost giant’s outfit, but same problem as the other Storm King’s Thunder Frost Giant, too symmetrical, very unnatural looking. At least the proportions of this giant gal aren’t so outta whack. The hat is a little silly, but she wears it with such fashion confidence. Very impressive. I couldn’t pull it off, that’s for sure.

Closing Thoughts and Predictions

Seems like next ep should definitely involve a battle with the Takers of the Tombs. I’m interested to see how the antimagic black light zone is identified on the mat. Presumably with spell templates? We shall see. Sure to be a regular battle royale!

6: Which of your d&d characters has been the least like you?

Honestly, probably Medea! And even she has slipped so much towards me lmao. Girlboss is not really my vibe but has been so so fun to play. I don't think I could have found her without Isaac's Sphinx to play off of because I don't have to feel bad about being mean to him sfdsdf and she needs an outlet for that. I'm not a person who carries much guilt or bitterness so that has been really interesting to poke at.

12: Have you ever fought a beholder?

Yes, an undead one, in a oneshot @brogendered ran! iirc we fucked up trying to get into the house over the wall instead of through the door and dropped right into a deadly encounter. we scooped a magic sword and fled back over the wall but left the beholder in some AOE damage spell, then took a short rest, and by the time we came back it was fully dead lmao. Extremely scary surprise encounter to start off the oneshot and extremely kind of jake to let us cheese it that way instead of killing us immediately which we probably had earned.

16. What is your favorite D&D pod/vodcast?

Anything by the Streampunks (Twitter here; most of their shows & others currently hosted on Queuetimes on YT/Twitch). Most of their stuff isn't in the D&D but all of it makes me cry. I started with Callisto 6 back on Geek & Sundry as my first ttrpg foray outside of CR and have never looked back. Strongest of recommendations to anyone interested in superheroes in dystopian cyberpunk Los Angeles 2119 combatting megacorporations with the power of eternal gay love and direct radical action, with a ton of loving care put into worldbuilding and rooting their characters in specific neighborhoods of the city.

It's a story about deliberate compassion and the enduring connection of communities in an unkind capitalistic world, with a storyteller who knows and takes care of his players by giving them every chance to explore what choosing kindness means and to reclaim agency for their own characters, allies, and antagonists alike. Fundamentally changed my understanding of ttrpgs as storytelling you can do, on purpose, with everyone throwing themselves wholeheartedly into a shared story with a deliberate commitment to theme. I think genuinely every single character made me cry at least once, including the ones I originally didn't connect with who ultimately had such powerful arcs that revealed the actors had been paying real damn attention the whole time.

Also has my favorite gay flirting via mechanically suboptimal combat choices that I've ever seen. I simply can't get into it here because I WILL scream but my jaw dropped. gina devivo’s mind. if you want even more longform gay yelling from me send me questions about callisto 6 or other streampunks shows lmao.

14. Have you ever had a romance with an NPC or another PC?

Casey I will love you forever for turning my sheer lesbian energy and chronic Support Women syndrome into an actual romance for Medea and Medusa. Galaxy brain. I think that's the only romance I've dealt with, unless we count Tony wingmanning Tuck by strongly implying she'd fucked a lot of giants, which we shouldn't, even if it was iconic.

18. Do you use props/minis/terrain in your game?

using this as an excuse to say Roll20 my beloved. still extremely proud of the first oneshot I made from scratch last spring, when I taught myself javascript in order to code puzzles into the Roll20 API. I made: pressure plates that trigger walls to move up and down to allow water to flow; an automatically rotating lantern puzzle that revealed hidden text on the walls and featured actually climbable lanterns that I could hook character tokens to; and most importantly a secret button to change the icon of the goose barbarian, Duck Duck the Goose, from the standard Untitled Goose holding a knife into an edited version of the icon with "then perish" laser eyes.

Oh also a secret pressure plate trap that would only trigger when the bard stepped on it, played a magical sound effect and teleported him to another page where he had to solve a penis nonogram puzzle to be sent back to the party.

Aaand a magic electrical spark that worked as a laser pointer to guide a kitten around the map, complete with both the spark and the kitten’s icons switching orientations as they moved depending on whether they were above/below and left/right of each other.

No physical minis, but in the dark ages before heroforge had color options I manually recolored this mini of Tetra using fake photoshop by isolating each part of her body and fucking around with hue filters until I liked it.

32. Most memorable NPC you've encountered in a game you played in.

There's so many, but I've periodically heard Najiba's voice in my head saying "Ithren, are you crazy? Like, you're a little bit crazy, right?" for weeks. her voice is so lyrical I want to listen to her talk for hours.

Ithren doesn't get her at all, but they like when she asks them questions bc it makes them feel like they are doing something useful by answering, even if their answers are completely incomprehensible to the party. I love that after every big thing that happens she goes, "Um, was that okay? That we did that? Like is that a good thing or did we do something bad here?" & makes everyone give their opinions. queen of nosiness.

34. Favorite accent to do for characters?

I've only found one accent I can do reliably so far and it's, like, surfer bro frat boy himbo burnout. Instant hit with the children and got my hapless bandit captive adopted by the party so quickly and now he's in charge of their horses. I love him so much.

all my other NPCs inevitably slide towards vaguely british snooty woman or gruff gravelly uncle no matter what I try to start them as. the two genders etc etc.

36. What was your first d&d character you made?

Tony the Tabaxi, my beloved. Orange tabaxi thembo swashbuckler rogue. The name is a fakeout for Tony the Tiger; they're actually named after Antonio Banderas who voices Puss in Boots. They’re just Puss in Boots. Thought I was gonna have to do something funky for the build but swashbucklers literally get the Panache ability at level 9 that is a free non-magical charm that works perfectly for Puss's big sad cat eyes. Love them so much.

Shrek 2 isn't on Netflix (or wasn't at the time) so for character research I watched Puss In Boots (2011) as well as "Puss In Book: Trapped in an Epic Tale", which is a choose your own adventure interactive special?? And a few episodes of The Adventures of Puss in Boots which (spoilers) takes place in the town of San Lorenzo which puss protects for years until the bloodwolf gets summoned and puss & friends get sucked into a dimensional portal (?) and Puss has to choose to have his friends' memories of him erased in order to correct the timeline, but carries them with him always. From what I recall. He adopts some piglets I think.

IGT: 1:50:32.16 | CR: 147/216 Looks like I did better on this one than I thought. Ugly seed for sure -- bootsless (boots in GT that I didn't get), forced dips into pendant PoD (mitts) and SP (mushroom, frod), and flute on agina which was really easy to justify putting off. Cane in IP didn't really particularly help either. Despite that the seed was relatively generous early on. Hammer in link's house let you do front of escape ASAP. I tried for the heck of it to do dark cross with 4 hearts and hammer only but didn't make it. Gloves and moon pearl in kak gave you dark world access straight away, plus byrna to kill blind easily, which was an interesting prospect, but I decided not to bite on that and just continue doing light world checks first. After doing south shore/icerodcave/flippers checks the first thing I did was do hype cave (bow), then checked pyramid and took a stupid death on the way to check catfish. I kept on worrying for the rest of the seed that something important like boots would be there, but looks like that wasn't the case. PoD was full clearable (w/dark rooms) at that point but I decided to just grab book from back of escape (dark cross was nothing, woo!) and just do EP only. After that it was pretty obvious I should dip SW and clear out TT and village of outcasts (mirror). That gave access to ToH and light world death mountain, but no progression was to be had there and that's sort of where the seed decided to start brickwalling you. Went to PoD and got my mitts, cleared IP to get cane, then decided to do smithy chain, bombos tablet, then check stuff in DP. Decided to check agina before going into DP -- glad I did, as that was the flute. Of course, MM is the one medallion I didn't have...decided to check dark world DM first, got ether from that, finished MM, then cleared out SP, got the mushroom, and turned it in straight away for the go mode frod (in hindsight maybe should have fake powder'd first in case). Execution mistakes this time: 1) Failed the ToH bomb jump, I need to remebmer what the pixels look like. 2) Forgot that I didn't have the TR big key and had to go back for it. 3) Died to Trinexxx due to missing the double hit on the spin slash. 4) Fell on Moldorm2 more times than I'd like to admit. 5) Minor flubs on the ganon fight, but nothing serious. Managed to stay out of DP entirely and didn't bother killing helma or argghus. Skipped mimic cave and was planning to go-mode TR but ended up opening all the chests because part of laser bridge was required and there was an off-chance that boots (or butter sword) would be there. No such luck, though.

the entire time i read the book, up until i saw video promos of this show, i thought “crowley” was said the same way as spn’s “crowley”, as in “crahwlee”
