Really interesting article. Some highlights (emphasis mine):
It continues to come as a great surprise for many people to learn that psychiatry’s leading authorities, including the former longtime director of the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), have discarded the “chemical imbalance theory of mental illness”—an idea which has had a profound impact on millions of emotionally suffering people and on our entire society.
While researchers began jettisoning it by the 1990s, one of psychiatry’s first loud rejections was in 2011, when psychiatrist Ronald Pies, Editor-in-Chief Emeritus of the Psychiatric Times, stated: “In truth, the ‘chemical imbalance’ notion was always a kind of urban legend—never a theory seriously propounded by well-informed psychiatrists.” Thomas Insel was the NIMH director from 2002 to 2015, and in his recently published book, Healing (2022), he notes, “The idea of mental illness as a ‘chemical imbalance’ has now given way to mental illnesses as ‘connectional’ or brain circuit disorders.” While this latest “brain circuit disorder” theory remains controversial, it is now consensus at the highest levels of psychiatry that the chemical imbalance theory is invalid.
In Blaming the Brain (1998), Elliot Valenstein, professor emeritus of psychology and neuroscience at the University of Michigan, detailed research showing that it is just as likely for people with normal serotonin levels to feel depressed as it is for people with abnormal serotonin levels, and that it is just as likely for people with abnormally high serotonin levels to feel depressed as it is for people with abnormally low serotonin levels. Valenstein concluded, “Furthermore, there is no convincing evidence that depressed people have a serotonin or norepinephrine deficiency.”
As a journalist, [National Public Radio correspondent Alix] Spiegel did some digging. She talked to Joseph Coyle, Harvard Medical School professor of neuroscience and editor of one of psychiatry’s most prestigious journals, who told her: “Chemical imbalance is sort of last-century thinking....It’s really an outmoded way of thinking.” Spiegel tried to discover why psychiatry has not made greater efforts at publicizing its jettisoning of the chemical imbalance hypothesis. Alan Frazer, chair of the department of pharmacology at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio, told her that framing depression as a chemical imbalance has allowed patients to feel better about taking a drug and to “feel better about themselves, if there was this biological reason for them being depressed, some deficiency, and the drug was correcting it.” Apparently, authorities at the highest levels have long known that the chemical imbalance theory was a disproven hypothesis, but they have viewed it as a useful “noble lie” to encourage medication use.
I also found this video in which Mitch Prinstein, chief science officer at the American Psychological Association, says that SSRIs probably aren't a placebo affect and that people shouldn't just stop taking them, but suggests that depression is a complex phenomenon which SSRIs only address one facet of and may not be the best approach to, citing different therapy approaches as potentially more effective in certain cases. But then there's this:
Another interesting article that goes farther in linking the use of SSRIs to capitalism and the predatory influence of Big Pharma.
Almost every measure of our collective mental health—rates of suicide, anxiety, depression, addiction deaths, psychiatric prescription use—went the wrong direction, even as access to services expanded greatly.”
During the last three decades, SSRIs have been repeatedly linked to higher suicide risk; found to create a far higher percentage of sexual dysfunction than to positively affect depression (with SSRI success rates no different than placebo rates or even lower than placebo rates); and result in withdrawal reactions that can be severe and persistent.
Big Pharma has spread its money around to psychiatric institutions such as the American Psychiatric Association (APA), the guild of psychiatrists, and to so-called “patient advocacy” groups such as the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI). Big Pharma has also spread millions of dollars around to individual psychiatrists, especially so-called “thought leaders.” One of many psychiatrists exposed by 2008 Congressional hearings on psychiatry’s financial relationship with drug companies was Harvard psychiatrist Joseph Biederman—credited with creating pediatric bipolar disorder—who received $1.6 million in consulting fees from drug makers from 2000 to 2007.
The individual-defect/pathologizing of emotional suffering and behavioral disturbances meets the political needs of those who wish to remain in denial of their connection with emotional suffering and behavioral disturbances. Psychiatry’s biochemical/brain disease explanations for emotional suffering and behavioral disturbances clearly meets the needs of the ruling class. If a population believes that its suffering is caused not by social-economic-political variables but instead by individual defects, this belief undermines political rebellion and maintains the status quo.
“Biological determinism (biologism) has been a powerful mode of explaining the observed inequalities of status, wealth, and power in contemporary industrial capitalist societies. . . . Biological determinism is a powerful and flexible form of ‘blaming the victim.’”
For societal and family authorities, psychiatry has another political role, an “extra-legal police function.” Specifically, a major political role of psychiatry is to control individuals—via involuntary drug and hospitalization “treatments”—who have done nothing illegal but who create tension for authorities. David Cohen, UCLA professor of social welfare, notes: “This coercive function is what society and most people actually appreciate most about psychiatry.”
On another level, psychiatry lives on despite repeated failures and lack of progress because it embraces the worship of technology and the belief that salvation from emotional suffering will come with a new technology.
A lot to think about.
To be clear, I’m not averse to taking medication per se. I’m on OCD meds and I know how quickly I spiral into misery without them. But it’s really frustrating to read all this since it just underlines that we’re really doing nothing about the real underlying problems, and the capitalism really is the root cause of so much of what’s wrong with the world right now.

thank you very much for the ask from the i'm not from the states ask game, @practicecourts!
6. what is your most hated song in your native language?
dúlamán.
partially because it doesn't help us beat the bogtrotting simpletons allegations to have a popular folksong which exists purely to gas up the concept of seaweed, but also because when i was little my dancing teacher [who was a SADIST] choreographed a routine to this and i fell over halfway through it in front of my older brother's hottest friend. the memory is visceral.
my least favourite irish song in the english language is danny boy [or, to give it its proper name, the londonderry air], because it's guaranteed to be the thing good-natured drunks in both britain and america start singing at you the second they clock the accent.
24. what other nation is joked about most often in your country?
in this order:
britain
america
cork
27. who is your favourite national celebrity?
nadine coyle - the greatest member of girls aloud.
she's a gemini! she thought she was a city girl! she enjoys working with flour!

CHENG LEI
CHENG LEI
Chinese-Australian Journalist
1975
Cheng Lei is a Chinese-born Australian who worked as a news anchor on television. She worked as a prominent news anchor for Chinese-English news channel China Global Television Network (CGTN) in Beijing 2012-2020. She worked for 9-years as CNBC’s China correspondent and then went to work as a presenter and columnist for Sky News Australia.
In September 2020, she was detained by communist Chinese authorities. In August a Chinese government official stated that she was ‘suspected of carrying out criminal activities endangering China’s national security’ - no details or evidence were provided. Her detention was ‘without cause or reason’ and there were concerns for her fate.
On February 2021, the Chinese government accused Lei of ‘suspicion of illegally supplying state secrets overseas’. She was imprisoned for almost three years for publishing the nation’s GDP and job targets. Australia fought for the return of Lei and had to deal with continual delays which were frustrating for all involved.
On 11 October 2023, Lei was released from Beijing detention and returned to Melbourne, Australia. She was reunited with her two children, 12 and 14 .
She revealed when she was behind bars she was forced to watch the Chinese state news each day, which gave her little to no insight of what was taking place around the world. She said, ‘You wouldn’t call that news, it’s just political propaganda.’ She missed her partner, Nick Coyle and her two children (who she wasn’t permitted to talk to or see). During her imprisonment she only saw sunlight for 10 hours each year and didn’t see a tree in three years.
She returned to her role as a news presenter for Sky News Australia two months after her release. She stated her hunger for ‘news and information’ never subsided when she was behind bars and wanted to rediscover her voice.

Peter Tork signing an autograph for 12-year-old Monkees fan Seth Brown in Portland, Maine, on April 6, 1995 (photo by David A. Rogers/Portland Press Herald via Getty Images); Peter outside the local radio station that same day (photo by Sue Rioux); and Peter onstage during his performance (photo via the Portland Sea Dogs).
“Because of a friend of another friend of a friend of his daughter Hallie, Peter Tork was asked to make an appearance in Portland, Maine, on April 6 to sing the National Anthem at the opening game for the hometown minor league (Double A) baseball team, the Portland Sea Dogs. Hours before the game, Peter appeared live on local radio station WOCN, Ocean 98, during the All-Request Lunch Hour, to promote his new album ‘Stranger Things Have Happened.’ At 11:45, Peter arrived in a long white limo, guitar in hand and accompanied by his current girlfriend. There were about four fans waiting outside the entrance. Peter smiled and was delighted to pose for a few photos. He looked in great health and mugged for the cameras, telling us that he would be out after the radio appearance was over. His time on-air was short but a few highlights came out of it. Peter was able to play two cuts off his new CD, ‘Milkshake’ and a half-live-half-studio version of ‘Take A Giant Step,’ which would’ve been really nice if only the engineer hadn’t messed up the transition from Peter’s live performance to the studio version. Peter also got to play a new song, ‘The Harder They Come,’ live. […] Within an hour, Peter was done. He came out and signed autographs and posed for more photos. By this time a few more fans had arrived. Peter said he was off to the afternoon Sea Dogs game for a soundcheck. Ever the baseball fan, Peter mentioned he was staying for the whole game. We made our way down to Hadlock Field to catch Peter’s opener. The doors were opened at 2 p.m. We first walked around to see where he would make his entrance. We spotted Peter up in the owner’s box, watching the players warm up for the game. A journalist was doing a story on a local 12-year-old Monkees fan who was to meet one of his idols for the first time. […] Peter came out about 3:45. He was now wearing a Sea Dogs jackets. He was introduced to Seth and did his best to make his young fan feel at ease. After Peter asked who the man standing next to Seth was, Seth proudly introduced him as his father. ‘Yeah, well, don’t let that go to your head,’ said Peter. ‘I’ve got one of those, too.’ When told that Seth knew everything there was about the Monkees, Peter said, ‘Yeah? Then what’s Mike’s middle name?’ After frightening seconds of uncertainty, Seth recalled that ‘Mike’ is Nesmith’s middle name. Then he came came up with each of the other Monkees’ middle names, thoroughly impressing Peter. It was then time for Peter to step out onto the field and sing the National Anthem to the sell-out crowd. It was announced that one of the Monkees was being escorted onto the field, and someone in a gorilla suit ran out, only to leave dejectedly when told he was the wrong one. Peter walked out carrying his guitar and said into the microphone, ‘That looked an awful lot like Mike Nesmith to me.’ He plugged his electric guitar into the amp that was miked, then hit a power chord and struck a heavy-metal type pose. The audience ate it up. Then Peter did the National Anthem like no way I’ve heard it before, a very heartfelt rendition. In the blink of an eye it was over. ‘Last Train To Clarksville’ played over the loudspeakers as Peter exited. Peter ran back to the gate he came out of and signed autographs for all those who wanted one.” - Chris Coyle, Monkee Business Fanzine, June 1995

Researchers call for more abortion studies to be retracted • Ohio Capital Journal
The studies are:
“Depression and unintended pregnancy in the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth: a cohort study,” published in 2002 in the British Medical Journal (which also published Tuesday’s commentary). The authors of this study are longtime abortion opponent David C. Reardon, who also co-authored two of the recently retracted Sage articles, and Jesse R. Cougle. The cohort study concluded that the risk of depression was higher in women who had an abortion compared with those who continued an unwanted first pregnancy. But the commentary writers say an independent re-analysis of the same data found that the study incorrectly identified unwanted first pregnancies and did not control for pre-pregnancy levels of depression. The journal made partial corrections, but the commentary authors say “serious methodological problems remain uncorrected.”
“Generalized anxiety following unintended pregnancies resolved through childbirth and abortion: a cohort study of the 1995 National Survey of Family Growth,” published in 2005 in the Journal of Anxiety Disorders, and written by Cougle, Reardon, and Priscilla K. Coleman, a retired Bowling Green State University professor of human development and family studies, and a longtime anti-abortion activist. The study concluded that abortion was associated with higher rates of anxiety than giving birth, but, according to the commentary authors, an independent re-analysis showed that pre-existing levels of anxiety and exposure to domestic violence accounted for this association.
“Induced abortion and anxiety, mood, and substance abuse disorders: isolating the effects of abortion in the national comorbidity survey,” published in 2009 in the Journal of Psychiatric Research and authored by Coleman, Catherine T. Coyle, Martha Shuping, and frequent anti-abortion expert witness Vincent M. Rue. This analysis concluded that abortion increased the likelihood of various mental health problems and substance use disorders, but the commentary authors say the results could not be replicated because of incorrect statements about the methodology.
“Abortion and mental health: quantitative synthesis and analysis of research published 1995-2009,” published in 2011 in the British Journal of Psychiatry, authored by Coleman. This was a meta-analysis that ultimately concluded that abortion accounts for a substantial increase in the risk of adverse mental health outcomes. The commentary authors say the study failed to meet methodological criteria for systematic reviews, noting that 11 of the 22 included studies were authored or co-authored by the sole author of the meta-analysis.

Nayel Nassar &amp, Ivory TCS Team Up to Win the$ 32, 000 Dodd Technologies CSI 5*
Tumblr media
Wellington, Florida, USA – March 15, 2024 – Continuing and banner day for Evergate Stables on Friday, Nayel Nassar ( EGY ) piloted the newly- acquired 11- year- old Dutch Warmblood mare, Ivory TCS&nbsp, ( Falaise de Muze x Ukato ), to the pinnacle position in the$ 32, 000 Dodd Technologies 1. 50m. The 52 combinations came from a truly international field with around 14 nations represented in the field, as is frequently the case in the final few weeks of WEF competition. &nbsp,
Before Nassar laid down the gauntlet as only the eighth competitor in the order, Oscar Soberon ( USA ) designed the single-round speed with minimal lead changes. The rest of the industry made quick work of overthrowing his successful time of 63. 74 seconds, but nσne of them could close the gap.
The horse, which was formerly a aƫtach of Ireland’s Daniel Coyle, is a winner for her entire career, accordiȵg to Nassar. Irrespective of who is watching her, she is proving to be a success. She’s so quickly and she’s a little small strided, but all those ranges I never have to take and can only keep coming. She also has speedy reflexes, so I believe it’s a mix of all of those.
He continued,” I felt like I could maintain galloping the entire way around, and she seems to like it. ” She becomes more sharpened as you go further, and now was undoubtedly her day.
The win was part of an entire productive time for team Evergate, having earlier won the$ 25, 000 Lövsta Future Challenge 7- year- old Developing Jumper Final. &nbsp,
” I think we have a great group of people and animals, and we manage the horsȩs ωell throughout the time,” Nassar described”. I had a gradual ramp up because I was furthermore hurt at the beginning of the year, which has paid off in the recent months as the period nears its conclusion. The riders are clean, and the horses are still feelinǥ fresh. Everyone has been so on place this year, and it’s starting to show in the results. ” It definitely takes a community.
The closest contender to Nassar was Michael Duffy ( IRL), who piloted Intense Marsh Farm LLC’s 10- yr- old Scandinavian Warmblood horse, RMF Cinnamo ( Magic Park x Avon, into second place just a minute behind in 64. 75 hours.
Germany’s Richard Vogel ( GER ) made it a truly international victory gallop as he rounded out the top three with Caroline Mawhinney’s 12- year- oldDutch Warmblood gelding, Hollywood V ( MyLord Carthago*hn x Casall ). &nbsp,
Final Results –$ 32, 000 Dodd Technologies – 1. 50m
