↳  “The pack needs you.” It was an order, not a question and Jin didn’t even give him time to answer, when he spoke clearly, “I need you to come home right now.”

Breakfast the next morning was just as weird. Jungkook had gotten up early and because the bed next to him had been empty he had went down into the kitchen to see if Yoongi was there. He was - together with almost everyone else.
It was absolutely quiet while they drank their coffee or inhaled their food and Jungkook wondered if he had missed something. They all looked tired, lost in their own thoughts and Jungkook stood at the door for a moment, wondering if he should say something or be as quiet as them and tiptoe over to Yoongi to get some coffee.
Namjoon took the decision from him. He came from the bathroom about to pass Jungkook to get in the kitchen when he stopped and lingered for a moment behind him. The younger froze when Namjoon picked at his neckline gingerly and pulled down his shirt until the skin was visible. “He doesn‘t bite your neck, does he?“ He whispered and yet it was clearly audible in the kitchen’s silence. There was a complacent tone in his voice and when he finally walked past him Jungkook could see his smug smirk. “Such a pity that Yoongi can‘t live out his true nature just because he chose to be with someone so...fragile.“
For the nth time, Jungkook’s cheeks darkened and he hurried over to take a seat next to his boyfriend, a little too close, feeling more than uncomfortable and exposed right now. They were still looking at him and only when Jin cleared his throat, did they all return their attention to their food. Being too tired, he hadn’t even fully taken on the breakfast table, that was richly filled with food, fruits and loads of bacon piled on a plate. Hoseok immediately reached for it, licking his lips in hunger as he filled up his own plate. “I see where you got your love for breakfast from,” Jungkook whispered towards Yoongi, placing his hand on his boyfriend’s thigh. Although his family wasn’t quite welcoming, it was nice to see where Yoongi got his habits from. “Why didn’t you wake me up? You always wake me up...” The younger leaned in a little more, not wanting anyone to eavesdrop (not aware that a wolf could hear perfectly fine without any trouble for a long distance). A pout appeared on his lips, “I looked for you last night…”
“I’m sorry, Kook. We had to talk about some family stuff, and it got way later than planned. Did you sleep well at least?” He gave Namjoon a glare when the other looked over to them, obviously still amused. There was no doubt that he was eavesdropping, laughing about the fact that Yoongi had to lie to Jungkook's face.
Jungkook shook his head softly, “I never sleep well if you’re not by my side. I got cold.” He frowned, taking one of the buns that Jimin offered him with a smile and thanked him quickly. “Is there anything else you have to do today? I thought I’d maybe want to take a walk around the grounds. It’s a really beautiful forest and last night…” His eyes began to gleam in excitement, “I saw some foxes or something. I’m not sure. I bet there's loads of bunnies and…”
“No!” Jin interrupted him before Yoongi could open his mouth. “You can’t just run around here, first it’s rude and second it’s dangerous. You might know foxes as cute little pets from TV or whatever you get your information from, but they are wild animals, not pets to cuddle.”
“I bet he can’t even tell the difference between a fox and a wolf...” Namjoon chimed in but Jin’s look made him shut up as he rather finished his porridge.
Jungkook couldn’t help but sigh. “I didn’t mean to cuddle the foxes but simply to take a stroll around.” He bit his tongue, not wanting to make it worse and simply gave Yoongi an apologetic look that told him more than a thousand words. Jungkook got up, thanking the others for the food and left the kitchen without another word, trying to ignore the scoffs coming from Yoongi’s family.
Yoongi followed shortly after. “Jungkook? Are you okay?” It was exhausting trying to keep both sides of his life from destroying each other and he wished he could just pack up his things and leave but it didn’t work like that. As a pack member you had duties to fulfill, like coming when called even if you had your own life and different views than your pack leader. Jin could have actually done much worse than just giving him a hard time, if he had insisted on his right as a leader he could have told the others to hunt him down and they would have had to obey. So, in a way Yoongi was still thankful…but seeing Jungkook hurting, hurt him too.
“You don’t have to listen to them, you know? Though... part of what Jin said is true. The grounds look beautiful, but they are actually very dangerous. It’s not all trees and moss and you could easily slip or fall - I broke my ankle a week after I came here for the first time because I underestimated how easily one can fall over roots or lose footing on the gravel. Also... there are wolves, you know.”
“I won’t go there if you don’t want me to…I just…I’m trying,” Jungkook could feel the tears burning in his eyes, the hurt and the disappointment clogging his throat and making it harder to breathe. “But they don’t even give me a chance, it’s like…they already have a set image of me, and I don’t even know what I did wrong. I want them to like me, Yoongi. They are your family and…” He blinked, turning his head to not let his boyfriend see how much it was hurting him. “I shouldn’t have come here. M-maybe I should get a hotel room? Then you can just get me when we drive home again after the funeral. It won’t be long until then, right?”
Yoongi pulled Jungkook close, aching for the younger and his attempts to still be kind towards his family. “Kook, please don’t trouble yourself with their opinions. They don’t need to like you, I know you’re gorgeous and that’s enough, right? I won’t change my mind about you just because they are coset minded idiots. You did nothing wrong! They just don’t like people... from the city. It’s all just prejudices and stereotypes. I’ve tried to prove them wrong a long time ago and it didn’t help so please don’t get your heart into this. It’s not worth it.” He gently wiped away the younger's tears, waiting until Jungkook signaled him that he was okay. “You shouldn’t get a hotel though, it’s expensive and the hotels here are not... that good and they won’t be kinder to you. All the people around here are weird, it’s a small town thing... I would understand it if you would want to go home though. I’d feel better knowing that you are okay there and don’t have to listen to all that … bullshit they say. Believe me, I only didn’t throw my breakfast at Namjoon’s face because ... getting Jin angry is bad for your health.”
There was a smile on Jungkook’s lips, when Yoongi talked about throwing his food at the others. It was always easy for him to make him smile again, to feel a little better. Jungkook nodded, taking in a deep breath as he relaxed a little more into his boyfriend’s hug. “I’ll stay until the funeral. If you need to stay here longer then, I’ll go home but I want to be there for you then. I don’t care what they say.” He placed a kiss on Yoongi’s lips.
Yoongi’s smile wavered a little. He had kept his words vague when Jungkook had caught him packing but now with the younger here he needed to get a little more specific - without giving too much away. Why couldn’t he be a better liar and make up stories on the spot that made more sense and wouldn’t make Jungkook more suspicious? Yoongi licked his lips, deciding he would put as much truth into this as he could without getting reprimanded by Jin, but he would only make things worse if he kept lying. He didn’t want to lose his relationship over this!
“The funeral is today... but we won’t attend it. It’s not one of ours, it’s a man from the village.” Of course, Jungkook looked surprised and so he kept going, quickly, before his boyfriend could ask too many questions. “The thing is he was found on our - on Jin’s - ground and it was a wolf that’s why... we need to find that wolf. Before the villagers come here and wreak havoc. I should have told you the truth right away, I’m sorry, I… I didn’t want you to worry. That’s why Jin and I really don’t want you to walk around here. The wolf probably won’t come close to the house, but I’d rather be safe than sorry. Will you promise me to stay in? Please?”
“A…a wolf attack?” Jungkook furrowed his brows, trying to wrap his head around all of this new information. “Why didn’t you tell me? I thought…I thought a family member…” He took a step away from Yoongi. There was something Yoongi didn’t tell him. “I was worried out of my mind for you. Why do they need you to find the wolf? The police should do that…”
Of course, Jungkook kept asking questions! He was too curious for his own good! And as much as Yoongi loved Jungkook for his urge to get to the bottom of things and stick to the truth right now it was making this conversation really uncomfortable. “The police and us... we’re not on good terms. Also... it kind of is our fault that it happened on our grounds, isn’t it, so it’s a thing of honor to ...make sure that never happens again. We know the grounds best and we are way better at…”
The sound of someone clearing his throat had him flinching. He had been so focused on Jungkook and trying to make this believable without telling him the actual truth that he had missed Jin coming up to them.
“Yoongi? I’d like to talk to you for a second.”
Jungkook instinctively turned away from the other, whose eyes seemed to be piercing into Yoongi. “I…I’ll be in our room.” He whispered, giving Yoongi a quick kiss, before he walked up the stairs quietly. Jungkook really didn’t like the way Jin was talking to them, as if he were bossing them around. Even if it was his house, he had no right to talk to them like this – but he also didn’t want to give Yoongi more trouble.
Jin continued to look at Yoongi with his piercing gaze until the silence stretched between them and Yoongi got nervous. "What is it?"
Jin scoffed, "Do I really have to spell it out for you? I don't believe you've forgotten our rules. 'Killing humans is only allowed in defense or to protect the pack'. The more you tell Jungkook the closer he gets to becoming a threat and I don't want to be forced to order his killing." Yoongi balled his fists, ready to snap at Jin but the other held up his hand to stop him. "Don't. I know what you want to say, and I know that you meant it when you told me you'd rather die trying to save Jungkook than following and order like that. Which we both know you would because you don't stand a chance against five of us, especially not while having to protect someone who can't protect themselves. So, let's just hope it won't come to that. I just wanted to remind you." With that Jin left him standing and torn, as Yoongi wanted both to be with Jungkook in an urge to physically shield him from harm and to go after Jin to tell him Jungkook wasn't a threat to the pack and would never be.
If he had known Taehyung was up in their room he would have probably chosen the former.
Taehyung had heard the steps on the stairs, but he still couldn't slip out of the room unnoticed so he and Jungkook were awkwardly standing in the door. Taehyung reacted quickly, "There you are. I wanted to ask you if you wanted to get a coffee or some tea...as your breakfast was cut short. We could try to break the ice a little, get to know each other..." He was a smooth liar and yet there was some truth in it. He actually was curious about the human that had stolen a werewolf's heart.
Jungkook eyed the other nervously for a second. Was it a trap to get to know more about him only to bash him in the end for their relationship again? He couldn’t tell. Taehyung hadn’t been the one talking badly about him so far, so Jungkook took a deep breath, trying to push down the doubts (and thoughts why the other had been in their room). “I wanted to take a walk into the village anyways, maybe you could show me around?” Jungkook smiled, a little too warily still - but he tried. He wanted to get to know Yoongi’s family, so even if this was a trap, maybe he could get to know a few things himself.
“The village?” Taehyung hesitated for a second but then he gave him a broad smile. “Sure, let’s get out to the village and drink some coffee there, or something sweet like a hot chocolate for you?” They went down the stairs and Taehyung held the door open for Jungkook, only remembering to take his coat when the younger one put on his own.
Taehyung had pulled him along quickly and Jungkook couldn’t quite stand a chance and so the coat had been the only thing he could grab, before heading out in the cold. “Jin won’t be mad, right? That we’re taking a walk into town...I only promised him not to take a walk in the forest, right?” They stayed on the path, but Jungkook’s eyes seemed to be drawn back into the woods. “Yoongi explained it to me. Are you scared of what they’ll say about you, too? You can’t really be at fault for a wolf’s attack, just because it happened on your grounds, right?”
“He’s not a fan of the villagers but he only told us to not go alone there. And we’re not alone, are we?” He winked at Jungkook conspiratorially but then his face turned serious again. “I’m not scared but I understand why they are. They don’t know much about us and it’s a small town with lots of rumors and then there’s someone dead... we didn’t kill him, but I do think we have some kind of fault in this. It’s our land and we are responsible for what happens in it. We should have noticed that there was a rogue wolf. It won’t happen again though. We will find it and make sure it doesn’t kill again and then guard our land even more.”
Jungkook nodded, not really sure what Taehyung had meant with guarding their land more. It sounded strange, as if they would be walking patrol to not let any wolf in. That would be insane to do. The grounds were wide, it would take ages for one human to secure it all. He kept quiet, following the other who was telling him some kinds of random stories about the village until they finally arrived at a coffee shop.
The people’s head turned around immediately and Jungkook felt awfully put on the spot, but it wasn’t him who they were looking at but Taehyung. A grip on his shoulder, made him stumble ahead and to a table in the corner. “Can I ask you something?” Jungkook asked and when Taehyung urged him on to speak, he lowered his voice. “I don’t want to sound rude, but I have only known about you guys for a couple of days now and...I feel like...there’s something that I don’t get? You don’t really seem to hate me, do you? But Jin...he pretends as if he knows me. I really don’t want to harm any of you guys. I’m just here for my boyfriend, whom I really love.”
Taehyung placed his chin in his hand and grinned at Jungkook. “You’re a smart cookie, aren’t you? I don’t mind your questions, but you shouldn’t ask Jin any, he doesn't like that. You’re totally right, though, there are things you don’t get. We’ve all been living together for ages. And... I’m not sure if Yoongi told you but we’re not related in the usual way, we’re more a chosen family kind of thing. So, the villagers think we’re creepy or Jin’s a pervert collecting boys or something and they treat us as such. So Jin’s very, very careful of other people. And you kind of snatched Yoongi from him that’s why he doesn’t like you. Not you as a person, just you as someone who made Yoongi move to the city. You really do love him, don’t you? It’s not the kind of love that’s based on desire and novelty, you’re genuinely trying to be with him, right?”
“I am with him,“ Jungkook said, a little hurt that Taehyung made it sound as if he was only fooling himself and Yoongi and he weren’t a couple. “I love him, and I’d give my life for him in a heartbeat. There’s not a thing I wouldn’t do for him and I know he feels the same.” His fingers were wrapped tightly around the hot chocolate that the waiter had brought but he didn’t mind the heat. “But I never wanted to snatch him away from anyone. It was Yoongi’s decision to move in with me and I couldn’t have been happier. I wish Jin could see that.”
“Big words for such a young person.” He sounded rather amused but there was also something in his face that said that he believed him. “Be careful, someone might ask you to act on them.” He nodded in thanks when the waitress placed down his coffee even though it was set down at the very end of the table and the waitress made sure to vanish as fast as she could. “Oh, he knows. Yoongi is awfully stubborn, he’d never do something he doesn’t really want to. The thing is normally we don’t date someone from outside. We’re not allowed to and we’re fine with it. No one ever challenged that rule - until you came. The thing is, Yoongi didn’t tell us a thing and then Jin found out and they fought, badly, and ... well, you know how that goes. Words are said, threats are made...We haven’t seen him since. I don’t think Jin thought that your relationship would last and he had hoped for Yoongi to come back to us on his own, that’s why he’s so pissed that not only are you still together but Yoongi actually brought you. It must have felt like a slap in Jin’s face. To be honest neither of us were very happy about it, because Yoongi didn’t just leave Jin when he went away, he left all of us. However, none of it is your fault so I’m trying to get to know you and find out who you are as a person.”
“Outside?” Jungkook shook his head in confusion, “What do you mean ‘from the outside’? Just because I’m living in the city. I’m sorry, but I really don’t get it…what’s so wrong about it?” He bit his lip. It hurt and at the same time, he felt proud to know that Yoongi had fought for them in the beginning. “You seem to have awfully lots of rules that I don’t get.” Jungkook only now understood why the villagers thought of them as crazy. “Please explain it to me. Why does Jin put up those rules and why…why do you all follow them? Why is everyone doing what he orders immediately?”
“We all went to Jin for a reason. You only chose a family if your old one doesn’t work, right? Most of us simply don’t have one any more or we suffered too much from their hands to ever go back. Jin is only trying to protect us, the p... the people he loves. We could just walk away if we wanted - but then we would be back to being alone and helpless and being hunt...” He broke off, biting his lip. He avoided Jungkook's gaze for a moment until he had managed to restore the smile on his face. “It might look extreme from your point of view, but I can promise you this is not a cult or something, it’s simply self-defense. You just have to let us be and we’ll do the same.”
“So, you mean, you want me to leave him?” Jungkook’s expression hardened. He knew Yoongi didn’t have an easy life, so he was happy for everything he told him and never tried to pressure him in any way. “Yoongi is not alone anymore.” His voice sounded small and Jungkook sipped from his chocolate, trying to calm his rapid beating heart. “Is that what you want? For me to go and let him live with you again?”
“No. Of course not.” Taehyung shook his head. “You’d break his heart if you left him and even though it would mean that Yoongi would come back to us because he doesn’t have anywhere else to go it wouldn’t necessarily make it better. If he’s happy now then I’m okay with that. I’m just... I’m trying to find out if... You’d marry him, would you? ‘In health and sickness, for better or worse’, doesn’t it go like that? What if you had to accept a great part of ‘sickness’ and ‘worse’ in your life? You said you’d die for him and I think you actually meant it so anything else that’s not ‘death’ is better, isn’t it? No matter how strange or uncomfortable it may seem at first.”
“In a heartbeat.“ Jungkook answered without hesitation, holding Taehyung’s gaze. “I’d follow him to the end of the world…and I’m not sure what you mean. Yoongi isn’t sick, right? He never really…he doesn’t even catch a cold.” He was confused and nervous and Taehyung’s even more confusing speech wasn’t helping.
“That’s all I needed to know. Don’t worry about the rest.” He reached out and placed his hand on top of Jungkook to squeeze it. “We’ll deal with the rogue wolf on our territory and then you and Yoongi can go back home. And who knows maybe you’ll start to like his strange little family, and Jin might warm up to you in return. It’s possible for things to change. All it needs is a tiny little nudge sometimes.”
Jungkook nodded, sipping on his hot chocolate in silence. Yoongi’s family was giving him a headache, so much was clear. Everything else was still a mystery to him. But he hoped what Taehyung had said was true, maybe they could change something and maybe Jin would see that he wasn’t trying to take Yoongi away from him.
There was a pull within him, something that made him yearn for his boyfriend’s closeness even more so, therefore he was glad when Taehyung suggested to walk home again.
When they arrived Yoongi was already at the door, phone in hand. He looked frantic and came over to meet them halfway. “Are you okay?” He gave Taehyung a look that said, ‘What did you do?’ as clearly as if he had spelled it out but Taehyung acted unfazed. “Don’t worry, we just went for a hot chocolate. I didn’t eat him.” His grin suggested that it was something he might have considered.
“I’m fine,” Jungkook wrapped his arm around Yoongi’s waist, giving him a quick kiss as they walked back inside. Yoongi was busy staring Taehyung down, when out of a sudden the sound of something crashing caught all of their attention. Jungkook was the first one to react, when he saw Namjoon’s half naked chest heaving heavily as he pushed against Hoseok hard who stumbled back from the open conservatory door. A vase was lying broken on the stone terrace. Without a second thought, Jungkook ran down the hallway and out in the garden, before either could throw a punch again.
“Stop!” He stretched out both arms, pushing himself in between the two men. “Whatever it is! It’s not worth it!”
Hoseok looked at him in complete shock - and then he burst into laughter. He was laughing so hard he could barely breathe, and it took Jungkook a while to hear what he was saying. “That kid... he thought we were fighting for real... and he thought it was a good idea... to walk right in the middle of it!” He snatched Jungkook away from where he was standing and ruffled his hair. “God, you are the cutest! How can someone be so righteous and naive and get himself in so much trouble? I kind of get what Yoongi see’s in you now, it must be good for the soul to come home after a full night out to all this innocence and honesty.”
Once more Jungkook was more than speechless from confusion. A full night out? He tried to fix his hair, while trying to get what Hoseok was saying. “What? But…what are you doing?” He looked at Namjoon, who was cracking his knuckles as if he was just waiting to go at it again.
“We’re wrestling. Play-fighting. Getting rid of too much restless energy. Training our reflexes. Whatever you want to call it. You could join us if you wanted. It might do you good.” Namjoon answered, a sparkle in his eyes.  His half opened shirt showed off his muscles and Namjoon cocked his head when he caught Jungkook looking. “Do you enjoy the view? Don’t tell me Yoongi lost his form.”
Jungkook looked over his shoulder to his boyfriend, who had followed shortly after but turned back around when he deemed no danger for him or anyone else. “Wouldn’t you like to know,” Jungkook answered out of spite, feeling embarrassed that he couldn’t see whether they were play fighting or not. But seriously - who in the hell playfights?
Now that he was really looking at the others, standing a few feet away, he noticed how all of them were muscular. Even Jimin, who was smaller and had a thin waist, was muscled and strong, showing off his six pack easily as he was laying in the sun. Hoseok movements were fast and Namjoon easily kept up with him as they ran around the garden, catching each other and rolling on the grass as if they were predators and the other was his prey.
The words Taehyung had said replayed in his mind. We will deal with the rogue wolf on our territory. Jungkook shook his head. It was mad and yet, there was not one thing that made rational sense anymore. There was a throbbing headache forming in the back of his head and Jungkook turned around, walking back into the mansion. Not a family by blood. Jungkook rubbed the sides of his temples, trying to focus. Suddenly it seemed as if nothing made sense anymore from Yoongi’s sudden night’s out to all the things the others said. It was as if they knew. As if they knew more than they wanted to tell him. As if he couldn’t handle it. Jungkook tried to take a deep breath, but it shuddered him. What if you had to accept a great part of ‘sickness’ and ‘worse’ in your life? Taehyung’s words kept replaying in his mind. Jungkook came to a halt right in front of the hallway’s painting that was hanging at the back. He hadn’t looked at it thoroughly, yet because it showed Jin and he only thought of it as very egocentric. He was standing proudly, the forest in the back that Jungkook immediately recognized as the grounds and a dog right next to him. Furrowing his brows, Jungkook cocked his head aside. It was a rather large dog, Jungkook thought to himself, taking another step closer. It had brown fur with white spots all over and when he narrowed his eyes, Jungkook could see that it wasn’t a dog. It was too big to be one.
It was a wolf.
Jungkook’s eyes widened as he held his breath.
“I couldn’t believe it at first with how long you’ve been together, but he really has no clue,“ Taehyung sounded curious, Yoongi rather defeated. “At least I hope he doesn’t. I did everything I could to hide it but he‘s smart and picks up on things easily. So far he hasn‘t really confronted me...“
“And did you ever try to hint at something? Or test his opinion about the occult? Take him to a festival, or a witch or...“
Yoongi interrupted him. “No, never. Nothing like that. I didn‘t want to give him any ideas. Also, it wouldn't help me to find out how he would react because just because he likes crystals or might be intrigued by tarot cards it doesn‘t mean he wouldn‘t freak out about everything else.“
Jungkook had moved on instinct to where Yoongi’s voice came from, gulping hard against the lump in his throat as he tried to be as quiet as possible, coming to a halt in front of the kitchen door. What were they talking about? His eyes flickered over to the painting again and then back at Yoongi.
Taehyung sighed. “You‘re right. You‘d only know for sure if you told him. And then it‘s too late... You know some of us wondered if it wouldn‘t be better for him to find out here where we could do something about it. We could let him come to terms with it away from the city and if he can‘t handle the truth...“ He left the sentence open, but it was pretty clear that whatever would have been at the end of it, it wouldn‘t be pleasant for Jungkook. And yet he wasn‘t prepared for Taehyung‘s next words: “Not Jin, of course. He would rather snap Jungkook‘s neck then risk him finding out anything about us…“
A gasp fell from his lips and Jungkook pressed his hand on his mouth. There was panic rising in his chest, something clogging up his throat. Fear. Or maybe just his flight response.
Suddenly there was silence and the only thing Yoongi could hear was his own frantically beating heart. “Jungkook?“ Before he could run the door was pushed open and Yoongi stood in front of him. “What are you doing here? I thought you were in the garden?”
Jungkook’s eyes searched Yoongi’s for a moment, but he couldn’t fathom it. He reeked for air painfully, before he started running.
He just ran as fast as he could.
Tears were blurring his view, but Jungkook didn’t care. He just needed air. Lots of it. He needed to think and to understand. Jungkook stumbled a little, but he didn’t stop as he ran into the forest, pushing branches out of his way. He needed to get away from all of this. From Jin. From their family. From their pack. Just so he could breathe again.
Yoongi felt hot and cold all over, his heart beating into overdrive. This was what he had been afraid of and now he would have to face the consequences. He felt sick to his stomach and yet he was determined to do whatever he had to if it meant keeping Jungkook safe. The thought of losing him in the process made his heart feel like it was ready to snap in half. Besides him Taehyung had tensed up, ready to go after Jungkook and hunt him down so Yoongi did the only thing he could to keep Taehyung from running after his boyfriend, throwing himself in Taehyung's way. Their bodies collided painfully but he held on, trying to keep Taehyung down.
"Wait! Please, wait, let me talk to him, I can fix this! This doesn't mean he knows! He might just be scared, don't hunt him! Please, Taehyung, I'm begging you, let me go after him first! I can talk him out of whatever he thinks he heard or saw!" He was desperate, so he was telling Taehyung whatever he needed to, knowing that if Jungkook knew he'd get him off the grounds instead of bringing him back, hoping that Jungkook could make it back to the city without him.
Taehyung growled low in his chest, his instincts kicking in to protect his pack no matter what. “You have five minutes, or I run after you. I might not be the only one who will notice…” Taehyung hissed through his teeth. The others were still outside and if they saw Jungkook running into the woods, Yoongi really should be the fastest one right now.
“Thank you!” He bolted out the door, right after Jungkook who brought quite the distance between them but Yoongi was fast and he had his wolf senses and he knew that he would always find Jungkook, even in a crowd of people. However, the younger made it easy for him as he had stopped only a few hundred meters in the forest. He was standing frozen at a steep hillside, staring down as if he was trying to find the answers down there. Yoongi stopped short, out of breath and scared out of his mind. The slope wasn’t steep enough to be deadly in case Jungkook fell but he could definitely injure himself and the way the younger stared down there made him shiver.
“Kook? Baby?” He carefully walked closer, holding his hands up to show that he was not a threat. “I don’t know what you’re thinking right now but… it’s not as bad as it sounded, okay? Whatever you heard, don’t believe what Tae said, he exaggerates a lot and …Kook, are you listening to me?” There was absolutely no reaction coming from the younger, not even when Yoongi was close enough to reach out for him. “Jungkook?” He gently touched the other’s elbow to make him turn and look at him.
He was pale, all color gone from his face when he flinched hard at the sudden touch. “I...I…” He couldn’t utter a word and only his eyes flickered back to the slope, where there was a dead body lying on the forest grounds. Or well - what was left of it. Jungkook gulped against the lump in his throat, but it didn’t seem to help as he gasped for air. “What...what are you? Did...did you? Did...Jin?” Jungkook hadn’t seen the other after breakfast and suddenly all of the new thoughts were spiraling down on him. “What is going on?” His voice sounded sharp, when he stepped away from Yoongi but not because he was afraid, but simply because it was too much. He dry heaved, feeling drowsy as the smell of blood reached them.
“Please, get away from that...” He tried to pull Jungkook towards him but the other slipped easily out of his grip. Now that he was close the smell of blood washed over him, clogging his senses. It was already cold, the man down there long gone but still it was overwhelming. If he hadn’t been focused solely on Jungkook he would have noticed it way sooner. From behind them came an alarmed sound and Yoongi flinched. The pack members had caught on, someone must have seen them or tried to look for them and smelled the blood. Yoongi gripped Jungkook at his upper arms, keeping him still, forcing him to look at him. “Listen to me, I’m begging you to not ask questions or behave differently from before when the others arrive. I’ll explain everything to you later, just stay calm, tell them you wanted to see the woods and that you found …this by accident. Don’t tell them you’re scared, don’t say anything about...anything, please, Jungkook! You have to trust me now!”
How the hell was he supposed to stay calm, when there was a dead man lying right in front of him. His eyes were wide as he tried to follow what Yoongi was asking of him, but he nodded, reaching for his boyfriend to steady himself. He didn’t want to see the blood, nor smell it – so he buried his face in the crook of his neck. “I need to know, it’s driving me crazy, please.” Jungkook begged quietly, small whimpers leaving his lips, “I trust you, Yoongi. I always trust you.” He did. But he had to know the truth or else he couldn’t keep this going.
Yoongi opened his mouth, trying to reassure Jungkook that he would tell him everything and that it would be fine when the breath was knocked out of him. He fell to the floor while Namjoon ripped Jungkook away from him, his arm tightly against the younger’s throat. “That’s enough now. We’re taking no more risks, not with a rogue out there and another body. You should have sent him home when you still had the chance, Yoongi.”
The scream got stuck in his throat and Jungkook gasped for air, trying to push against Namjoon’s rough grip. “N-no, no, please.” The panic was written all over him and Jungkook’s fearful gaze searched for Yoongi’s. “I’m not a threat, I’m…” He coughed, “Please!”
Yoongi trembled all over as his worst fears were starting to take shape right in front of his eyes. “Namjoon.. Joonie, please! Let him go! You.. you know me I wouldn’t hurt the pack and Jungkook wouldn’t either, he’s just scared because he found the body, he knows nothing, he..”
“He thinks that it’s me.” Jin interrupted him, walking nonchalantly into the scene with the other right behind him. “Don’t insult me with lies, Yoongi, I heard him.” He stepped forward until he was right in front of Jungkook. “So, you think I’m a killer hm? What now? Will you run to the villagers and tell them I’m leading some killer cult where we have to run around naked at night and drop bodies on our grounds for fun? Is that what you think, hm?”
“No, that’s not…” The grip around his throat loosened just enough for him to talk, but Namjoon didn’t entirely let go. “I don’t think you’re a killer!” Jungkook screamed back at Seokjin, who seemed adamant on speaking over him, but he had enough. “I was confused, and I didn’t get it. I didn’t understand and it still doesn’t make much sense to me. But I trust Yoongi. You’re all capable of killing, but you’re just as afraid of it as everyone else.“ His chest was heaving heavily, trying to push against Namjoon to get him to back off. “You’re wolves, aren’t you? The sickness you were talking of…” He turned to Taehyung, “The rules, how they all follow your lead…you’re a pack, don’t you?” It sounded absolutely bat shit crazy and maybe he was going insane. But that was the only explanation he had. The full moon nights, when Yoongi left him every time, had always kept him wondering. It couldn’t just be that he was fascinated by the moon, he figured that out a long time.
Jin patted his cheek. “Smart boy!” He turned to look at each of his pack members, even Yoongi who was still on the ground too scared that Namjoon would hurt his boyfriend if he made any wrong move. “And that is exactly why we don’t let humans get too close. They might not get it at first but if we let them stick around for too long they will figure it out sooner or later. And then we have to kill them to keep our secret. No one wants that. And yet some of us thought they should still break the rules and risk all of our lives - including the humans.” He looked at Yoongi with a sad expression. “I warned you so many times. But I guess some people have to make their own mistakes. You’ll remember after you had to bury your loved one.”
Jungkook’s heart stopped when Jin talked about killing him so easily, as if he meant nothing, while he still had to process that he hadn’t deny any of his thoughts. They were a pack. And they were ready to kill him.
“No, no, you can’t…” There were tears in Jungkook’s eyes when he spoke, “I love Yoongi, I do. I always do. I would never hurt him or his family. I’ve loved him with all of his flaws before and I still do, please, Jin.” He didn’t wipe the tears away but let them flow as he begged. “What do you need me to do to prove it to you?”
“There’s nothing you can do now, sweetheart. Yoongi sealed your fate the moment he brought you here. We can’t trust humans; we’ve learned that the hard way. I won’t take any risks here.” With a sad smile Jin extended a claw. It wouldn’t take much to slit the boy’s throat, humans were so soft and fragile..
Yoongi made a choked off sound, like a wounded animal, getting up on his knees so that he could get closer while showing Jin his full surrender. He barely kept his voice stable as he begged for Jungkook‘s life. “Don‘t do this, Jin, I‘m begging you! I‘ll never break any rules again, I swear! I‘ll come back, I‘ll… I‘ll never see him again if that‘s what it takes...“ There were tears starting to roll down his face but Yoongi ignored him and kept going, scared that if he would stop talking for even one second Jin might just tell Namjoon to kill Jungkook right now in front of his eyes.”I‘ll come back here and be whatever you want me to, I‘ll be your pack enforcer, I‘ll do your dirty work, everything – anything – you want me to do but please, please don‘t hurt him! He‘s too scared to say anything anyways, he wouldn‘t… you wouldn‘t talk, right?“ Only now did he dare to look up at Jungkook at his boyfriend struggling in Namjoon‘s grip. He could see the younger‘s fear and his voice finally broke on a sob. “I‘m sorry, Jungkook, I‘m so sorry! Please Jin, don‘t kill him! I‘ll do anything, just don‘t kill him, please!“
Everything in him screamed to run, to get away, to save his own life but his heart yearned for Yoongi. “It’s...it’s okay, please…” Jungkook turned his head to look at Yoongi a little more. “I might not understand all of this, but I love you Yoongi. I will always love you and...and...it’s okay.” His voice sounded painfully choked, trying to push against the restraints against his throat that were still Namjoon’s hands. The tears came falling on their own, his heart aching hard as he tried to reassure Yoongi that it was okay, that he didn’t need to worry. Because it was the truth. He still was confused, didn’t quite get what Yoongi was or whoever his family were but he knew he loved him - more than his own life. “I don’t regret a single thing,” Jungkook whispered, sniffling quietly but he didn’t care that the others saw him like that. He only wanted Yoongi to see how much he loved him. “I would do it all over again for you. All of it. Please, don’t beat yourself up about it. Be safe and...I... I’ll wait for you, o-okay?” He tried a smile but failed miserably, but his eyes spoke the truth. He meant every single thing. Jungkook didn’t take his eyes away from his love, not even when he could hear Jin walking towards him, keeping his gaze solely focused on him. “I love you, always have, always will.” He mouthed the words more than he said them aloud, but his voice seemed to die out on him, and he wanted Yoongi to be the last thing he saw when took his last breath.
Yoongi knew his heart would shatter into a million pieces if he watched Jungkook die but he couldn’t tear his eyes away. He was forced to look at him, he had no choice in that matter because of his desperate need to see Jungkook alive for as long as he could, even if there were only seconds left. He whimpered, sounding barely human anymore but he didn’t care. He was the one who had gotten Jungkook into this, who had made sure that Jungkook would die on these grounds and Jungkook tried to soothe him even though he was shaking and scared. He was crying openly now but he kept still, knowing that if he tried to do anything they’d rip Jungkook's throat out before he could even reach him. Like this he hoped Jin would have mercy and make it quick and painless. Yoongi felt like he was suffocating but he forced himself to smile through the tears so that the last thing Jungkook would see was a smile. ‘I love you too’ He mouthed, voice long gone, shuddering because Jin was close now, so close, reaching out for Jungkook's throat and he couldn’t help it, he howled, yelling out his broken heart in wolf.
Jin hesitated, his claw only a hair's breadth away from Jungkook's throat. The younger was calm now, he didn’t fight, didn’t beg, didn’t yell at Yoongi. Instead, he kept his eyes on his loved one, trying to take the guilt away from him and Jin frowned. If Jungkook was willing to die like this for Yoongi then maybe his love was stronger than his fear. Maybe despite all better knowledge he should risk it, just this once to let Jungkook see. If he freaked out then he could still kill him but if he took his life now he would destroy Yoongi from the inside out and maybe take a life that he could have spared. Jin growled low in his throat before retrieving his claw. “Alright then. I’ll give you one last chance. You say you still don’t understand so I’ll let you see. If you can tell me afterwards in all honesty that you still love him and that you will keep our secret for as long as you live then I will let you stay. However, I will know when you lie, I can hear your heartbeat so if you can’t do what I asked then you don’t even have to try and lie to me. I’ll know and Yoongi will too.”
Jin gave Namjoon a sign to loosen his grip on Jungkook but stay close to catch him if he tried to run. Then he turned to Yoongi. “Change. Now. Let him see what you are.”
Jungkook couldn’t keep up on his feet, falling onto his knees from exhaustion, fear and the way his heart was aching - but he never took his eyes from Yoongi. His breath was shaky as he looked at his boyfriend, lips trembling but he didn’t shy away. He loved Yoongi and he trusted him with all of his heart, even if he might not understand everything right now, he knew these two things. Carefully, Jungkook inched a little closer to Yoongi, just until he was only an arm-length away from him.
There was a pleased smile on Jin’s face, as if it was a show he enjoyed watching and yet, his eyes turned into slits when Yoongi’s wolf was pushing out, ready to jump Jungkook any second if the younger showed any sign of fear.
Yoongi’s breath came in pants as he was fighting to talk to Jungkook while the transformation was starting. “You trust me, right? You know I’d never hurt you, no matter what form I’m in. You’ll... you’ll always be safe... with me...” He groaned in pain when his bones started to crack, shifting, and growing under his skin. He always felt it first at his spine, right in between his shoulder blades. Now he was so used to the shifting and the pain that he could lean into it but during his first changes he had been scared that his spine would be injured, and he’d end up paralyzed. However, the wolf knew what it was doing to his body and even though it was still painful he could manage to keep it down except from a few grunts and groans that escaped him during the change. His skin rippled like there was water underneath before the fur started to push through, covering him from back to front. His clothes ripped when his form changed, standing no chance against his suddenly bigger frame that was being forced inside small human clothes. He tried to keep his eyes open, to make Jungkook see that it was still him but when his skull elongated, fangs breaking through he had to shut them from the searing pain. When he opened them again his eyes were no longer chocolate brown but lighter and deeper, like smoky topaz. Yoongi shook his fur, stretching his paws until he was standing fully transformed as a wolf in front of Jungkook.
Jungkook had held his breath entirely. He didn’t dare to take in air, too scared he would do the wrong thing. Every crack, every painful groan from Yoongi hurt him too and yet, he watched with awe, how the man he loved turned into a wolf right in front of him. It took a moment to grasp it, to understand that it was true. That he wasn’t going crazy and imagining all of these things. Yoongi was a wolf.
A beautiful one.
His lips curled into a smile, tears flowing down his cheek, when Jungkook reached out for Yoongi. He didn’t hesitate, burying his fingers deep into the fur as he leaned his head against the wolf’s face, not even flinching at the size of his fangs. The sobs shook him, as he held himself close to the wolf. “You’re b-beautiful…” He nuzzled his face closer, feeling the rapid heartbeat of Yoongi’s heart underneath the wolf, the warmth that he was so used to and always thought of as inhumanly. He was his wolf. “Of course, I know you won’t hurt me. I trust you, I always did.”
The weight fell off his chest when Jungkook didn’t scream or ran from him or crouched in shock. He barely gave his mind time to register what had happened before he buried his face in Yoongi’s fur and the wolf was beside himself with joy. He yipped and whined, unable to keep his happy sounds in before he started to lick Jungkook face all over.
The younger giggled and right now in this moment nothing else mattered but Yoongi. “Why didn’t you tell me…” He sniffled quietly, soothing over Yoongi’s fur as he tried to take in the beauty of the white, grey wolf that stood tall in front of him. “We could have run together in the forest...you always told me that you didn’t like jogging...and now...we could have run!” Jungkook whined teasingly, as if Yoongi took an important part of his life when he refused to work out with him on Sunday mornings.
Jimin cooed softly, pulling Namjoon a little away from Jungkook as he wrapped his arms around his partners waist. He didn’t need to hold the young human back anymore. Jin had no reason to kill - not tonight. The soft sound had Jungkook turning his head, looking up at the leader of the pack with bloodshot-teary eyes.
Jin nodded at him. “I think we can skip the questions.” He had listened to Jungkook's heart and even though it was beating faster there was no fear in him, no hate, no disgust. He had accepted Yoongi right away as if being a mythical, potentially deadly creature was no big deal. Apparently Yoongi had been right when he had told him that Jungkook was special and that they could trust him. Without an apology or another comment he turned towards the rest of his pack. “Okay, now that this has been taken care of we’ll go hunt for that rogue! Jimin, Hoseok and Tae you try to follow the scent and give us a sign if you find anything. Namjoon and I will look at the body to try and find out if it tells us anything about the killer. Then we’ll get the body off our property and to somewhere where people can find it without asking questions.” Tae and Jimin nodded, running off to where they could change without curious eyes.
“Yoongi, you will bring Jungkook back to the mansion and show him one of the hiding spots, just to be sure, then you will come back and join us.”
Once more he held his breath, carefully getting up on his feet. His knees were still wobbly, the fear that his life would have been taken by a wolf just like the human that lied beneath them, making him shaky. He steadied himself against Yoongi easily, trusting him to take him home.
Yoongi waited until Jin and Namjoon had gone down the little hill before he changed back. It would take a toll on his body to change into wolf form twice in such a short time, but he wanted to be able to talk to Jungkook, he couldn’t just get him back and then leave without saying a single word. Another downside was because he hadn’t gotten out of his clothes before changing because he hadn’t dared to waste a minute with Jungkook in danger he had only ripped stuff. Changing back to human form was actually a little quicker than the other way round, maybe because shrinking was easier on bones and tissue than expanding. Nonetheless he was panting when he finished, kneeling on the ground completely naked.
Jungkook immediately reached down for Yoongi, soothing over his back and holding him tight against him. He was more than happy that he hadn’t lost his boyfriend, nor his life. They would go through his, he knew they would make it somehow. “I got you,” Jungkook whispered, wrapping his arm around Yoongi’s waist to pull him up easily until the other caught his breath and was steady again. “Guess I know why you loved being nude so much now.” Jungkook giggled, placing a kiss on Yoongi’s cheek. And he knew why he found Namjoon and Jimin walking around naked in the mansion all the time.
Yoongi hugged Jungkook back tightly before taking his boyfriends face in his hands and kissing him gently. “Thank you.. thank you so much!” He whispered because Jin and Namjoon were still close enough to listen in if they wanted to. “Please forgive me for getting you almost... almost killed! I’ll never lie to you again, I promise, there’ll be no more secrets between us, you deserve nothing but the truth. I’ll have to help Jin find the rogue wolf before the traces get cold but after, tonight or tomorrow morning depending on how long it takes you can ask me anything and I’ll answer honestly.” Yoongi started to move when the pain in his muscles had simmered down to a dull ache, reaching out his hand for Jungkook to take because he needed him close. There was no use in trying to get back into the pieces of cloth that had been his clothes, so he just picked them up to discard them at the house.
The younger held him tight, too scared he might lose him again. They were walking fast and Yoongi still felt stiff and tensed up next to him. “It’s okay. I…I’ll wait, I understand now.” Jungkook answered honestly. “Where will you bring me though? You won’t lock me in, right?”
“No, I’d never do that!” Yoongi looked at him with wide eyes before the insecurity crept back in “You won’t run...right? I know you love me but with Jin and what he did… he won’t harm you now, I.. I’ll make sure you’re safe, okay? Please don’t go out into the woods alone again until we caught the rogue. It’s a werewolf and as you’ve seen he doesn’t care about human lives.”
“I won’t leave you, Yoongi.” When they were inside again, Jungkook turned around, taking both of his hands in his own and looked at him. “There’s a lot of questions you need to answer me, but so many doubts I had are gone. The many times I thought you were with someone else maybe, ‘cause you were gone the night. The marks the…I wished I would have known but…I understand, I do…I really do.” Jungkook pulled his boyfriend in, not caring whether he was naked or not. “I just don’t like to be locked in, that’s all. I’ll wait wherever you want me to until you get me.”
“Oh!” Yoongi blinked. He had never thought Jungkook could interpret his behaviour as him seeing someone behind Jungkook back but now that the other had mentioned it would seem surprisingly fitting. “And you never asked me about it? Because.. you were afraid that it was true? That I’d tell you I had someone else? But.. you knew I loved you, didn’t you?”
“I knew, I always did. You showed me every day.” Jungkook took in a shuddering breath, feeling too emotional from the tumult of the day. “It never made any sense to me, but it does now.” He kissed Yoongi softly, cupping the other’s cheeks. “And you know I love you, too, right?”
Yoongi chuckled, the tension finally losing his body, “Yeah, I think you being literally ready to die for my decisions proved that once and for all,” He commented with a lopsided smile. As Jin had allowed it he led Jungkook up the stairs to show him one of the many hidden spots behind the paneling. He was glad that Jungkook would know where to hide if something happened because even though he was pretty sure the rogue wouldn’t dare to come up to their house he was better safe than sorry. “You can hide here in case something happens or if we won’t come back tonight and you feel safer to sleep in here.”
Jungkook looked around the small room, which was big enough to fit a bed and a few shelves, filled with all kinds of books and artifacts. He nodded, pulling Yoongi in for a last kiss before the wolf closed the door again, making sure the human was safely hidden.
In the forest Namjoon and Jin were already preparing a bag, collecting what was left of the human to get it somewhere else. Their body language was tense and none of the wolves dared to speak as they worked meticulously.
Yoongi had thrown on a random shirt and pants, not really caring as he was pretty sure would get out of them soon anyways. However, he was staying human until Jin would tell him what he wanted him to do. Yoongi was ready to do whatever he was told, showing Jin his gratefulness through obedience and submission until he would find another time and place for him to put it in words as well.
It was way past midnight when their tired limbs carried them home.
Jimin was carried in Namjoon’s hold, the younger wolf had run until the exhaustion made him slow down and he couldn’t even walk anymore. Taehyung on the other side was dirty, leaning onto Hoseok tiredly, who was helping the younger in and towards the bathroom making sure he would feel taken care of and be clean. Jin had his arms crossed in front of his chest, brows furrowed deeply as he was still in thought.
They had been running all night and hiding the body somewhere closer to the humans, making sure there was no trace left and although he made sure of every detail, he knew the police would come and ask questions again. He let out a grunt, when Namjoon asked him if he needed anything else, leaving the two (or three if one counted the sleeping Jimin in his arms) alone in the hallway. It was evident that Jin was on edge, more than before. He wanted nothing but to protect them and right now it seemed as if someone was after them, wanting to ruin everything he had worked for.
Yoongi waited at the side and when Jin didn’t address any of them and went into the kitchen he took it as a sign they could all go to bed now. Or in his case have a conversation about being a werewolf with his boyfriend. He hurried in the bathroom and grabbed a dressing gown as he couldn’t be bothered with clothes after this hunt.
Carefully he knocked onto the door of the hiding space before he opened it. A tiny part of him hoped that Jungkook was asleep and they could postpone the talk and just cuddle sleepily like they’d done so often before. He really needed that right now.
Jungkook had tried to wait for him, roaming around the windowless room, getting lost in his thoughts and the many questions he had but in the end he lost the fight to his tiredness. He was exhausted, mind and heart alike from the turmoil, the fear, and the chaos.
The young human was lying on the couch, halfway over the armrest with his legs pulled in. He had refused to go to the bed at the other side of the room but wanted to wait for as long as he could.
Yoongi quietly got closer until he reached the curled up figure on the couch. From this distance he knew that Jungkook was asleep from how deep his breaths were and his slowed heartbeat. He looked so delicate like this, soft and innocent and Yoongi ached with the thought of what he had brought Jungkook into. He had been so selfish, but he just couldn’t let go of Jungkook or his feelings towards him. He hoped that Jungkook would forgive him, that he wouldn’t change his mind or feel different about him now. Even though the younger had told him everything was fine he just couldn’t believe that this new discovery hadn’t shaken Jungkook.
It was as if his heart reacted first, beating a little faster when his body followed the moment as Yoongi came closer. His name was a mumbled whisper when Jungkook blinked his eyes open tiredly, reaching out to where Yoongi stood in front of him until he could get a hold of him and pull him closer.
“Did you sleep well?” He interlaced their fingers, looking fondly down and his boyfriends face. Jungkook tugged at his arm as an answer and Yoongi chuckled, all the worries of the unsuccessful hunt falling off of him. Jungkook centered him and he loved him for it. He had to shuffle around a bit before he could sit down onto the small couch with Jungkook taking up half of it but when the younger stretched out a little he managed to lay down next to him. Their faces were so close to each other that he could easily bury his nose into Jungkook's neck.
Jungkook easily molded himself against Yoongi’s body until they were intertwined from head to toe, dwelling in his warmth. “Now I know,” Jungkook whispered, placing a kiss on Yoongi’s neck, “Why you’re never cold. Why you’re so strong although you refuse to go to the gym with me. The nights you were gone…” He held Yoongi a little tighter. “Never lie to me again, please.”
Yoongi breathed Jungkook in, each inhale flooding him with relief because there was no sourness in Jungkook smell, no fear. He trusted him still, despite everything. “I won’t”, he whispered, trying to convey that he really meant it, that he was thankful for Jungkook trust and that he would never abuse it again. “I love you. I say it a lot but... I really mean it. I always meant it and now I love you even more for still...being in love with me despite what I am.”
“You’re stuck with me; didn’t I tell you that enough?” Jungkook giggled softly, letting his hands rake through Yoongi’s hair. “You’re my wolf.” He still didn’t understand a lot of things; not why Jin hated him, ready to kill him without a second thought, but then he trusted Yoongi fully. “I still have a lot of questions though, but you can answer them tomorrow.” Jungkook yawned tiredly, nuzzling his face into his neck when he began to mumble a few questions that kept burning on his tongue, “Are there other creatures, too? Mermaids? Is your jealousy also rooted in your wolf nature? Is this why you love being nude? Your sex drive…is it…a wolf thing, too?”
“Thank you, I appreciate that.” He stole a kiss from Jungkook lips in between questions. “I’ve never seen a mermaid but who knows, I bet some people swear that werewolves don’t exist so who am I to say that there are no mermaids just because I’ve seen none.” He chuckled, “Yeah, a lot of things are from the wolf but the wolf is also I so it’s difficult to differentiate between ‘him’ and me - although there are a few things that are pretty obvious.”
Jungkook hummed, a smile on his lips as he closed his eyes. “You didn’t find him, right? What will happen next?” He almost didn’t dare to ask, too scared that their small visit would end up in a lot more pain than they had anticipated. “Why would someone kill those people on your grounds?” He looked up at his boyfriend, worry written all over his expression.
“I... I don’t know, Kook. We lost his trail somewhere a few miles from here when he crossed a river. Neither of us has any idea why someone would kill people and drop them here. Normally we werewolves hold together and even if there are differences between the few packs we’d never get the other one in trouble with the humans. That’s… too dangerous. If people find out we exist there would be a hunt for all of us! So, the only thing that would make sense is that this werewolf is new or stupid or has lost his mind. And yet he can play hide and seek with us.” Yoongi sighed deeply. “I really hope this will be over soon!”
Jungkook furrowed his brows in thought, cuddling a little closer again. There were still too many questions on his mind, but he couldn’t even collect them right now, so he just let it be, taking a deep breath. “Can we go back into our room? I’m scared we’ll end up on the floor tonight.”
“Yeah, that’ll be better. For the floor and our backs.” He got up and before Jungkook could try and follow him he swiftly picked him up to carry him in his arms. There was no need to hold back now, he could use his strength openly without raising questions.
Jungkook bit his lip in excitement and hid his face in Yoongi’s neck in embarrassment when he carried him so easily over the hallway. He placed a few kisses right there on the soft skin, wrapping his arm tightly around Yoongi so he couldn’t let go of him even when he dropped him on the mattress.
Jungkook clingy koala-hold almost had him toppling over and onto Jungkook himself. “Hey, what are you doing? I thought you wanted to sleep?” He teased him amused “You want to sleep with me on top of you? Are you sure you’ll be able to breathe like that?”
“Yes, I’m very sure of it,” He answered but let Yoongi slide off him just enough to lay his head on his chest. Jungkook was more than happy. It felt as if nothing had changed between them, although everything had, and he felt the love and their connection even stronger than before.

For My Sister

Summary: How Patience decided to keep Marilyn
TW: Mention of infant death, abortion, anxiety, PTSD, scary religious imagery. Emotionally charged chapter.
Patience slipped into her bed that was warm and waiting, and in any other scenario would be the most comforting place in existence but not to her. The sheets were loose but they felt heavy and strangling as she was left alone with her thoughts. You’re doing the right thing. You’d be a terrible mother...you are a terrible mother. Making her appointment to terminate her pregnancy was too simple of a process for such a heavy decision.
Her Protestant values had long faded away, and listening to her heart and mind would only spell out doom and uncertainty. The illegality of the situation barely phased her, she who had given up ethics so long ago. After all, Patience Winslow wasn’t getting an abortion, but Heather Adams whose pregnancy was accidental rather than forced upon her. No one would be at that appointment with her, no one would be waiting for her this time. He’s gone.
No one but my baby. She chastised herself for calling it a baby, silent tears rolling down her freckled and weathered face. At first, she had wanted it, solely because she didn’t want to be alone but the thought of doing something so god awfully monstrous again shook her to her core. If she went through with the pregnancy, she was determined to raise the baby because there was no way in hell she could abandon the child and leave its father to find it. To have the father kill anyone who stood in his way. There were two options and in her mind, she was choosing the right one. Finding out a piece of him was still inside her repulsed her and with mild certainty that she’d be finally ridding herself of the last piece of torture, she fell asleep.
***
The once greasy cluttered walls of her Garland apartment were bare, hardly having a trace of her previous occupancy. In fact, nothing showed a sign of a person living there. No furniture, tables, beds. Nothing except a cradle standing in the middle of the room, familiarly carved by him. The coos of a baby lured Patience’s feet to the bassinet, her moving through no will of her own. She wasn't sure if she wanted to see something in there or not, unable to decide what was more terrifying.
Her green eyes traced the edges, shutting tightly and ignoring the answer to her question. “It’s not real.”
“You made sure of that,” spoke a voice.
Her eyes bolted open and by God, she wished they hadn’t. Standing where the bassinet was, was him. “Leonar-”
“You really can’t tell the difference. You could never see me as me, could you mother?” the last part being said so venomously.
That was worse. So much worse. My baby boy. He was tall like his father, looming over and casting a shadow like he had her entire life. Like he always would. And he was so much like him with the blonde curls that were darkening to resemble a color close to hers and the chiseled jaw and cheekbones that had been gifted to the Angel Don. Patience could feel her stomach roll at the similarities but nothing could prepare her for the matching blue eyes that she had seen blank as day, but now held such a raw human intensity of emotion. He’s human. And that was the worse part. “I’m so sorry,” she immediately sobbed, sinking to her knees, “Andrea, my poor baby, I’m so sorry.”
She could hear him sneer. “A little late for that, isn’t it? And are you really?”
“I am,” she cried, “I’d take it ba-back if-if I could!”
“Isn’t it awful that I don’t know whether to believe you?” he said, his voice hurt.
His voice didn’t have a trace of Italian in it. He sounds like Daddy. Why? Why is this so much worse? “Ple-please!”
“I did nothing wrong,” his voice broke.
“You didn’t.”
“I was innocent.”
“Yes you we-were,” she confirmed.
“But you still murdered me.”
He wanted her to confirm it like she had with his first two statements, but she couldn't. You have to. You owe it to him. So she whispered, “I did.”
“How is it that a monster like him loved me more than you?”
Her wails echoed throughout the room as if she were the crying child in the bassinet. After all, it seemed Andrea had long run out of tears to shed. Patience had no answer. If she were in a better state of mind, she could argue but it didn’t matter what she had to say or if it was true. That’s not what he needs to hear. “You threw me out like a piece of garbage, your own flesh, and blood. A baby! You’re a baby killer and you’re going to do it again!”
“No, no, no, no,” she denied, hoping that if she said it’d go away, “I-I can’t be a mom.”
“But you are. You still are even though you murdered me,” he hissed, “And you’re going to be again.”
“You’re going to be a mother dolcezza…”
Her eyes bolted open, her heart beating like a drum against her chest. “You-you sound so much like him,” she said bitterly.
“I’m not saying anything that isn’t true,” he scoffed, tearing his eyes away from his mother’s, “This baby, she’s your saving grace. She’s how you’ll atone for what you did to me.”
She? Andrea must’ve seen or felt how she tensed. It seemed he had a good read on her just like his father had. For Patience, Andrea being a boy that resembled his Papa made her retch in fear. A mini monster in the making, but a girl? She felt such a fierce need to protect her, to coset and cradle her. “A girl?” she whispered for confirmation.
“Yes,” he said just as quietly, “You...you cared for me before I was born. When you still thought I was a girl. Lucky her.”
There’s nothing but bad luck for this little girl. “I-I don’t want this.”
“Well I didn’t want to be tossed off a fucking bridge!” he yelled, his eyes full of rage and wetness, “But here we fucking are!”
Patience was finally able to move her feet and she most certainly did as she scrambled for the door. I have to get out of here! She reached for the handle but as she pressed her hand against it, it turned into a flat cartoon doodle as the door became an outline of its former shape. She was trapped. “No, no, no!” she pounded fiercely against the door.
It was like being in the mansion all over again. Her stomach heaved but nothing came out. Jesus help me! “Ple-please!”
Andrea’s melodious voice carried across the room. “If anything happens to her,” he started softly before unleashing a volume of terror, “IF ANYTHING HAPPENS TO MY SISTER, I will ensure you burn in the hottest and most fiery pits of hell!”
Patience was screaming so loudly it drowned out the rest of what he said. When she turned back, her son was gone. The loss was not comforting, nor was what replaced it. Roaring red and orange flames reached the ceiling, chasing after her as it tried to engulf her in its heat. The smoke entered her lungs, choking her. “No! Please help,” she coughed, “Please someone help me!”
Patience shut her eyes and hid her face as she felt the large frame finally engulf her and-
***
Her body bolted awake, sending her springing up despite her swollen stomach serving as a barrier. Patience ripped off the damp sweaty covers and sent them violently to the floor as her body burned with heat. Her nightgown and underwear were next to join the linens as she stood up in the nude, trying to calm her racing heart. Patience’s face was drenched, though she couldn’t tell what part of it was sweat or tears. “I-I was in hell, oh God, I was in hell,” she panted through sobs to no one.
She fled into her shower and turned the tap to the coldest setting before standing beneath it, the water feeling blissful and comforting despite the freezing temperature until she closed her eyes and imagined her baby under the water. “Christ!” she sobbed as she stepped out as immediately as she stepped in.
Andrea, my baby. She sank to the floor and curled into herself, cradling her like her mommy was supposed to do. Like I was supposed to do for him. Patience sat wet and shivering on the tiles for, well she didn’t keep track of the time as she was too busy counting the number of lines that made up the tiles, but however long she was there was long enough for the sun to begin to rise. Finally, her hand curved around her swelling belly and rubbed it gently. Whether it was for her or her daughter she didn’t know. “I’m sorry,” she apologized, knowing that when the baby was grown and completely traumatized, she wouldn’t say it then, “I won’t be good at this. I’m sorry.”
Patience wasn’t sure where her sobs were directed or what emotion they held, but the source of them she knew for sure was her children. For the one she killed and the one she was keeping. God help me.

In the Bond-Chapter 16
Tumblr media
Summary: Lilah often wished she’d never said yes to working with the Gecko brothers—usually while dodging gunfire. At no time was she regretting that decision more than when she’s hanging upside down from the ceiling, staring down a group of hungry culebras and one (1) extremely powerful sun god.
Word Count: ~6,100
Warnings: Smut
A/N: This is an AU of my Story In the Blood, which can be read here. Basically, this fic explores what would have happened if Lilah had met up with Geckos before she met Brasa.

Lilah woke unwillingly. Rolling over, she scrubbed at her eyes, still swollen from crying herself to sleep. Brasa had held her closely as they drove away from a home Lilah wasn’t sure she would ever return to. She’d managed to hold her tears for about ten minutes, and then her will had given out.
In her state, Lilah could be forgiven for how long it had taken her to notice that they weren’t on course for Brasa’s bar. When she’d asked where they were going, Brasa had simply said, ‘home’.
‘Home’ was quite literally carved into solid stone. Accessible through an elevator hidden cleverly in a low rock formation. It opened into a completely dark corridor. Lilah let Brasa lead her by the hand into the darkness, looking back only once to catch Javier reaching down to close the doors to the elevator carriage, shutting out the only light.
Blind, Lilah’s step had faltered. Brasa took it in stride, wrapping an arm around her and acting as her guide. They reached a door, which opened to… ‘home’. It was, she supposed, average in size, though she hadn’t paid much attention to the architecture. Brasa had cosetted her in yet another deliciously comfortable bed and she had spent the rest of the afternoon and evening putting off Brasa’s questions regarding her well being.
To be fair, Lilah hadn’t known how she felt the night previous. She still wasn’t sure how she felt. Her emotions wavered between indignation and deep depression, both of which made her head ache. She pushed the covers back and swung her legs over the edge of the bed.
Padding quietly to the bathroom by the illumination of a small nightlight shining near the door of the bedroom, Lilah went through the motions of cleaning herself up. No stranger to a rough night, she was unsurprised to find shadows beneath her eyes and her hair in disarray. A quick look in the vanity drawers found a comb that the used to gingerly comb out the tangles.
After washing her face, Lilah made her way to the bedroom door, peering out into the hallway. Seeing nothing out of the ordinary, she tip toed towards the living room. In the few moments that she’d spent standing at the threshold, waiting for Brasa to shrug off his coat and hang it up, she’d noticed how sumptuous the furniture was—an overstuffed couch, soft carpets, dark and heavy woods. Everything was all rich fabric and soft textures. And yet, it was strangely bare. No pictures, no art, no...personality.
As she made her way deeper into the house, Lilah came upon Brasa sitting in the plush chair, a book in his hand. Head bent over the pages, he looked...so completely normal that she had to blink a few times to make sure that it was, indeed, him.
Sensing her approach, he looked up, eyes assessing, “How did you sleep?”
Lilah watched as he closed the book, setting it aside, She watched as he stood and approached. She watched as he became more concerned as she failed to respond. He grasped her above the elbows, head dipping to catch her eyes. Lilah couldn’t hold the gaze, and felt ridiculous for it.
“You should eat,” he pronounced, turning her and leading her gently through a set of double doors to a small, intimate dining room.
He bade her to sit, moving past the room and through to the kitchen. Lilah leaned her elbows on the table, resting her head in her palms as she waited. Drowsy from too much sleep, she blinked lazily into the middle distance, until movement in her periphery caught her attention.
Brasa approached, a plate in one hand, a glass of water in the other. He placed both before her, nudging the plate when she hesitated. Lilah looked down at what he made, a small chuckle sounding from low in her throat. Eggs in a basket. Toads in a hole. He’d remembered.
Charmed, and more than a little grateful, Lilah picked up the fork and cut into the edge of the toast, nicking the egg yolk. As she chewed,  she glanced over at Brasa, who was watching her. Though his posture was relaxed, there was a sharp light in his eyes that signaled he was studying her carefully.
“He will change his mind,” he said casually, gesturing smoothly with one hand.
Lilah paused, swallowing, “What?”
Brasa smiled, “Seth. He will change his mind.”
Eyes falling to her plate, Lilah busied herself with cutting into the second piece of toast, “You know that?”
“I do,” he answered.
“How?”
He shrugged, “I’m old.”
“You’ve mentioned.”
With a smile, he countered, “Old enough to know how men like Seth think. He’ll be mad for a while, but if he cares for you—and I think he does—he will come around.”
Lilah sighed and leaned back into her chair, “I’m so mad at him.”
Brasa nodded, saying nothing, waiting for her to continue. She looked to the ceiling, trying to gather her thoughts, to sort her emotions in a way that made any kind of sense.
“I know he’s struggling to accept…” she gestured broadly, “All of this. I mean, I’m still trying to accept it. But...the way he treated me, like a…”
Lilah stopped, ‘kid sister’ sitting like lead on her tongue. Her eyes closed as the implications of her own thoughts sunk in. He’d treated her just like a kid sister, an annoying kid sister that didn’t know what they were doing. And, somehow, that made her feel worse.
Sensing her unease, Brasa leaned forward and touched her hand, brushing his fingers over the back, “As I said. He will get over it.”
Casting him a sorrowful look, she murmured, “I hope so. We’re friends, you know?”
“I know.”
“And,” she continued, turning her hand over to thread her fingers through his, “I still want to be friends.”
He nodded, giving her hand a squeeze before picking up her plate and taking it to the kitchen. Lilah fiddled with her glass in a kind of soft resignation. This would have to play out however it was going to. Pushing the issue wasn’t going to make things better. Neither was dwelling on it. Still, she gave herself permission to feel sad for a while. That seemed fair.
Brasa returned and held out a hand to her, which she took. They walked amiably back to the living room where he sat her down on the couch and handed her the remote.
“I have some work to do,” he explained, leaning down to press a kiss to the crown of her head, “It’ll take a few hours. Then, we’ll decide what to do for the evening.”
Lilah spent maybe half an hour scrolling through the many streaming services that were on the top menu of the TV, amazed that Brasa had gotten so fully up to speed on modern entertainment. Furtively, she glanced through some of his watch history, smiling when she noted that he’d made it all the way through every season of House and, oddly enough, had recently watched The Princess Bride.
Eventually, she settled on restarting Drunk History from the beginning. Prior to signing on with the Gecko brothers, she’d watched a few episodes a month in her down time. There were always TVs on in the bar, so she’d never thought to purchase one for her room. Now seemed a good time for some comfort.
Brasa had been right when he’d said that his work would take a few hours. Lunchtime came and went, Lilah making her way to the kitchen and finding that he’d stocked it with some basic staples. They were going to have to take a shopping trip, though. The man had eggs, bread, a bag of various fruits, and a jug of milk. Her guess was that he’d googled basic foodstuffs and had run with it.
After eating her meal perched over the sink, Lilah washed her dishes and returned to the couch to start the next season. That was where Brasa found her, half asleep, stretched out over the cushions. He smiled as he approached, reaching down to lift her legs and sit, draping her feet over his lap.
“Done for the day?”
He shrugged, “In one manner of speaking.”
“What does that mean?”
Another shrug, “Benny’s following has grown again. We think he’s turning a few humans a week.”
Her brows came together, “What does that mean for you?”
Brasa took a few seconds to think about it, his fingers drawing little circles over the sensitive skin of her ankle, “It means that he is likely going to resort to violence, and soon.”
Lilah felt her muscles tense, a kind of latent anxiety rolling along her body, “How do we prevent it?”
Looking at her, his expression was soft, but sure, “I don’t think we can.”
She sat up, disbelieving, “Why not?”
Turning a little bit so that he could prop his arm up on the back of the couch, Brasa explained, “Men like this…there is only one thing that checks them, and I promised you that I would look at other options. He wants blood, will be satisfied by nothing else.”
Lilah pulled her legs up and under her body, folding her hands in her lap, “We can talk to him, right?”
“We tried that.”
“For like two seconds,” she countered, her anxiety melting into frustration, “There has to be a way. Nobody has to die for this.”
Head tilting to the side, he said, “When has, essentially, a coup, ever not resulted in bloodshed?”
Lilah rolled her eyes, “This isn’t a coup. Its...an administrative change.”
Brasa shot her a look that very clearly said that she was bullshitting, “In their eyes, I have taken away their way of life. You know this.”
She shook her head, “You’re giving them a better life. A life where they’re not hiding in the dark, picking off humans, and running from local hunters.”
“Some don’t see it that way.”
There was a kind of finality in his tone, a tension borne of having had this argument over and over with different people. Lilah sighed and wriggled deeper into the couch, feeling not a little bit petulant.
Brasa reached over and took her hand in a loose grasp, “This is not the first time I’ve brokered peace—did so just recently with the most stubborn people I’ve ever met, if you’ll recall.”
She laughed, “Yeah. There were a couple times I almost threw something at one or all of you during those meetings.”
One side of his mouth quirked up, “I could tell. You do not hide your feelings well.”
“Um, excuse me, I think I do,” Lilah shot back.
The little quirk in his mouth widened to a smile, “You do not. At least, not from me.”
Again, she rolled her eyes, “That’s because of the bond.”
He hummed in the negative, “You have a very expressive face.”
Lilah scoffed, “I have an excellent poker face.”
This earn her a low chuckle, “You do not.”
“I was able to keep the bond a secret for months.”
Brasa leaned into her space, his hand running up the length of her arm to settle behind her neck, “Richie knew within seconds of seeing you the night we met. And Seth’s powers of perception are mediocre, at best.”
Lilah was not too proud to admit that she was a little dazed at how close they were, coffee and caramel filling her senses. He’d given her a lot of space over the last twenty four hours—she wasn’t even sure where he’d slept. She found herself yearning to crawl right into his lap and stay there for the rest of the night, and some part of her figured that he’d probably let her.
But, while he’d been working, shed been thinking. And, the first order of business was to get some food that would make more than one kind of meal in the house.
“We need to go shopping,” she said, smiling when he tilted his head to the side in confusion, “Groceries. We need them—well, I need them.”
Brasa gave a curt nod, rising and pulling her to standing, “Do you want to go now?”
Knowing that she looked pretty fucking bad, Lilah shook her head, “Let me get cleaned up. I’ll be out in about forty minutes.”
She took her time with getting ready, making sure that she washed every inch of skin, shampooed and conditioned her hair, covered her dark circles, and put on some fresh, clean clothes. As she dug into her bag for socks, her phone and the case for her comm fell out. She touched them gingerly, noting that there was no service and that the comm was redundant, given that she didn’t have anyone to connect with. She tucked both away.
In the end, it took a little longer than forty minutes, but Brasa didn’t seem to mind. When she emerged from the bedroom, he was lounging on the couch, CSPAN playing on the TV.
Lilah’s eyes narrowed, “Why are you watching this?”
His eyes scanned her lazily, taking her in, “You didn’t think my entire business was in medical supplies, did you?”
She shrugged, “We never discussed it in detail.”
Reaching for the remote, he turned off the TV and stood, “I like a diverse portfolio. Keeps things stable  across the board.”
Lilah knew nothing about stocks, and even less about portfolios, “I’m sure that’s a good strategy.”
“It can be, though some people prefer a more adventurous technique.”
She moved towards the door, looking over her shoulder at him, “But, not you.”
He followed, “No.”
That tracked. Every decision Lilah had ever seen him make was calculated with brutal efficiency. Brasa did nothing by halves, nor did he make impulsive decisions. It was one of the things that Lilah liked most about him.
The hall was dark as it had been the day before, a chilling lack of light—except for a small triangle in the distance, the illumination so dull that it almost didn’t look real. As before, Brasa took her hand, leading her. As before, she went willingly. Unlike before, Lilah was alert enough to ask questions.
“What is this place?”
Brasa’s voice sounded next to her, “I’ve already told you.”
“Yeah, but what is it?”
They neared the light, and it was cast in shadow for a moment as Brasa pressed the button, “I needed a more secure place, a place to allow myself true rest. A place where I could keep you safe, when the time came.”
Leaning into his side, she asked, “Because of Benny?”
Though she couldn’t see him, Lilah felt him shake his head, “I have lived a life of nearly total violence. That comes with a cost.”
And, here they were, back to the same conversation they’d had at least twice before. Her safety. Her weakness. Her humanity—though, not her mortality.
“You think I’m safer underground?”
The doors opened and Brasa ushered her inside, “Only Javier and I—and now, you—know about it. It is secret.”
She smirked at him, “I’ve always wanted a secret hideout.”
He returned her mirth, “I live to serve.”
They held hands all the way to the surface and up until Brasa helped her up and into an SUV that was hidden in what basically amounted to a hollowed out rock. Lilah had to hand it to them. If she hadn’t known that this was here, she would have never guessed. There was literally no indication that the formations were anything but rocks, once all the entrances were closed.
She looked up a local store and they headed out, guided by the navigation in the dash. As they drove, Lilah drew up a list on her phone, having memorized her standard grocery order long ago. To it, she added a few items that she might not otherwise pick up, telling herself that she deserved a treat or two after the emotional fallout of her confrontation with Seth. She also decided that she was going to pick up a few bottles of wine.
Lilah had to admit that she never once thought about what it would be like to see Brasa in such a mundane setting. She doubted that he did his own shopping, what with Javier taking care of most menial tasks. Now, she was watching him step through the automatic doors of a local supermarket, his head turning to glance at her for direction.
It was surreal. Truly surreal. Lilah had the insane urge to laugh as she looked from him to the milling crowd that parted around him. She caught a few curious glances from them, even further amused that Brasa seemed to take no notice.
Shaking herself from her thoughts, Lilah took his arm and led him to the shopping carts, pulling one from the long line and taking a moment to study the layout of the store. Tall shelves were lined one after another, stocked full with wares.  Veering to the left, she headed for the bins of fresh fruits and vegetables.
Lilah was intimately aware of the way Brasa observed her going from bin to bin, picking out one or two and setting in the cart. He gave her space, but paid attention to how she chose her wares. Lilah mostly ignored him, focusing on trying to get enough to last her at least a few days.
As they passed the dairy aisle, Brasa finally said, “Things have moved...so quickly in the last few hundred years.”
She was leaning down to pick up an extra carton of eggs when he spoke, her head turning awkwardly to look at him, “What does that mean?”
He pushed his hands into his pockets, giving a shrug, “Advancements that would have taken a millennia several thousand years ago now happen in a hundred.”
Putting the eggs in the cart, Lilah thought about it for a moment, moving slowly towards the canned food, “I suppose you’re right.”
“I am,” he pronounced, smug.
She scoffed, pulling cans off the shelf to stock the small pantry behind the kitchen. Her voice, when it came, was tinged with a tease, “I’m an ancient vampire, I’m so smart, and I’ve seen everything.”
His laugh was soft, but genuinely amused, his chin dipping down towards his chest in a movement that was nothing short of demure. If Lilah were just some anonymous person in this store, if she were looking at him for the first time in that moment, her breath would have caught—as it was now—and she would have scurried away feeling so completely embarrassed at finding a total stranger so endearing.
As it was, she wasn’t anonymous. He very much knew her, a thought that would have been no less than frightening a year ago. Lilah felt no such fear now, only warmth that unfurled comfortably in her chest.
Brasa steered her down an aisle, gesturing at a shelf full of Gatorade, “Javier has sent me four texts reminding me that you will need this.”
Mouth open, Lilah stared at him in confusion for several seconds, “I will?”
He nodded, “Javier is adamant that I keep this in stock. He says you prefer the red color.”
Agog, Lilah asked, “How the fuck does he know that?”
Brasa cast her a look that said she should know the answer to that question. Javier might be quiet and unassuming, but he was better than the FBI at finding out the minutiae of people’s lives.
“Okay,” Lilah relented, “He’s right, but I don’t know why you would need to keep it on hand. Its not like I’ll need to constantly replenish my—oh.”
Without another word, Lilah leaned down and picked up two packs, setting them in the cart. She lost her battle to keep the nervous laugh at bay when she glanced at Brasa’s smirking face. He wasn’t even trying to hide the satisfaction in his expression. To give herself something to do other than smile stupidly, she turned her attention to navigating to the check out.
Brasa was quietly helpful in loading the groceries onto the conveyor, and Lilah didn’t miss how he maneuvered around her to pay before she could get her card out of her pocket. Casting him a knowing smile, Lilah moved past him, hands briefly touching his hips so that she could slide out from between the partitions to load the cart.
A few minutes later, she was pushing it out into the warm, humid night, and towards where he’d parked the SUV. A few more minutes, and they were making their way back to what she was going to continually call the ‘secret hideout’. The title brought a small, ‘secret smile’ to her lips.
As they pulled to a stop, that small smile turned into a grin. She looked to Brasa, “You’re about to be witness to an ancient human custom, going back at least a century.”
Head cocked to the side, Brasa looked at her in confusion, “I believe I am aware of most human customs, ancient or otherwise.”
Rolling her eyes, Lilah hopped out of the car and made her away around to the trunk, pushing the button to initiate the automatic open. She’d only picked out enough food to last for the week she promised him when he’d been negotiating her stay. Lilah was not going to think about how she likely would have to extend her stay indefinitely.
Lilah reached down and looped a few bags over her arm, “So it goes like this: No matter how much you buy, you never, ever, take more than one trip to get it in the house.”
Brasa looked at her arm, laden with bags, and back to the rest, his brow rising, “I...was not aware of this custom.”
She fixed him with a serious look, “Its a very important tradition.”
A little crease formed between his brows as he studied the bags they had left. Lilah swallowed the laugh that threatened to break the whole act apart, and hefted a few more onto her free arm. Brasa looked at what she carried, then leaned in and snagged the rest, hoisting them effortlessly in one arm.
She stared at him, chastising herself for forgetting how powerful he really was. She chastised herself further when she stayed right where she was as he reached up, closed the trunk, and tugged one of her arms free of the bags. It wasn’t until she was looking at his back as he opened the door to the elevator that she was able to make her feet move.
As they made the descent, Brasa shifted the bags to one arm and took her hand, turning it over to see how the bags had made little creases in her skin in the short time before he’d taken the load.
“I don’t understand this tradition,” he muttered, thumb rubbing at her palm.
Lilah smirked, “You don’t have to understand it to be a part of it.”
His eyes lifted from where they were studying her skin, “You are right. Some things just are.”
She had the distinct feeling that he wasn’t talking about defeating the grocery bag challenge. The weight behind his gaze made that place in the back of her mind flare up, the bond almost stinging her. Reflexively, her fingers curled, wrapping around his thumb.
There was a clinical ‘ding’ and the doors opened. Adjusting his grip, Brasa led her into the hall and to the door. A few taps, and the door opened. They carried the bags into the kitchen and Lilah took her time figuring out where to put everything.
As she was standing in the middle of the kitchen with a small bag of potatoes, Brasa’s phone rang. He pulled it from his pocket, held up a finger, and stepped from the room. She looked at the place where he’d been for a few seconds before shaking herself to attention. The potatoes could stay on the counter.
It was then that her stomach reminded her that she hadn’t eaten in several hours. With new food to choose from, she found herself a little bit at a loss as to what to make. In his kitchen, bare save for the food and the tools she needed to cook it with, she again longed for comfort. Broccoli cheese soup, it was.
With renewed purpose, Lilah began assembling the ingredients and putting a pot on the burner. She hadn’t made this particular recipe since high school, when she was still living with a family that she hadn’t talked to in years. Her hand on the knife paused as she took that in.
When she was running dangerous jobs for shady people, she had deliberately cut them off in fear for their safety. Now, she knew she could definitely never rekindle that relationship. What would happen in ten years, twenty, fifty, when she didn’t age, when she didn’t die?
Sniffing, she set her mind to cutting the broccoli florets into one inch pieces. There was no need to deepen the emotional anguish she’d experienced this week. She could do that at another time. Just to be safe, she opened a bottle of wine and left it and the glass on the counter to breathe.
As she was preparing to stir in the cheese to thicken the broth, Brasa returned. He leaned against the counter to watch her cook, arms crossed.
“Work?” she questioned lightly.
He gave a nod, “Javier worries.”
She hummed, glancing over her shoulder at him, “And?”
Pushing from the counter, he touched the small of her back. His hand traveled around her waist to rest just below her belly button. Lilah leaned into him, her head tilting to the side so that he could lay his chin on her shoulder. She relaxed into his hold, stirring slowly, in no hurry to move. Eventually, the soup thickened up as it was supposed to, and she reached up to turn the burner off.
Brasa already had a bowl ready for her, a spoon in his other hand. Lilah took it with a grateful nod and ladled a serving for herself. Rather than sit at the dining room table, Lilah hopped up onto the counter and spooned some into her mouth.
“You going to answer my question?”
His eyes dropped, though his mouth quirked in amusement, “He thinks we should be more aggressive with Benny.”
Lilah waved her spoon at him, indicating that he should continue.
“I find myself wondering if I should follow that advice.”
“Why?”
He sighed, his shoulders slumping, “His numbers grow along with the recklessness of his actions. He attacked a hotel last night, slaughtered the guests and staff. The police are investigating.”
Swinging one leg, Lilah asked, “You can’t buy them, bribe them to close the investigation?”
“We are working on that. The police chief is...remarkably stubborn about policy. Javier wants to eat him.”
She should not have laughed, but the thought of the prim and dapper Javier ripping the throat out of a police officer did not mesh together. He’d be too worried that he’d get blood on his suit.
When she finished, Lilah slipped down from the counter and rinsed out the bowl, setting it in the sink to clean later, “You want to watch a movie?”
“I could do that.”
“Cool,” she replied, already heading for the living room, grabbing the bottle of wine she’d opened along with the glass, “Where do you keep your extra blankets?”
She picked the softest, fluffiest one of the bunch and threw it over them both as they sat next to each other on the couch. Wine glass in hand, Lilah flicked through the streaming channels, already knowing which selection she was going to make.
His hand on her thigh, Brasa settled deeper into the cushion, letting out a light chuckle as she hit play, “I like this one.”
“Me, too,” she said, shifting so that she could lay her head on his shoulder.
Warm, full, and comfortable, Lilah found herself drifting even as Princess Buttercup argued with the Dread Pirate Roberts. The familiarity of Brasa’s scent wrapped around her and the story on the screen made everything inside her loosen for the first time since she’d left behind an angry Seth—well, that and two glasses of excellent wine.
By the time the credits rolled, Brasa had leaned back into the arm of the couch, pulling Lilah down to lay atop him. Her body pressed against his, Lilah soaked up his unnatural warmth. His arms held her loosely, but his hands were firm on her back and hip.
Lilah pushed up on her hands, looking down at him, “Thanks for bringing me here.”
“Of course,” he said, a little too quickly, “Of course.”
She smiled, dropping to an elbow and kissing him. Intending it to be a sort of ‘thank you’, Lilah started to pull away only to feel Brasa cup the back of her neck and hold her in place as he twined his tongue with hers. He warmed beneath her, burning hot, body arching. Lilah pulled her knees up underneath her, balancing on one hand so that she could run the other down the front of his shirt to pull it from where he had it tucked into his slacks.
He lifted his hips when she moved around to the back, his own hands roaming over her jean clad legs, pulling on each so that she sat astride him. And then, in a move she could have never accomplished on her own, he swung his legs over the edge of the couch and stood. Her ankles crossed to anchor her body on his hips, her hands grasping frantically to clasp the back of his neck. Lilah laughed as he kissed her cheek, her neck, her shoulder, all the while moving towards the bedroom.
He laid her carefully on the bed and systematically undressed her. Shoes, socks, jeans, underwear, shirt, bra—everything was peeled off without ceremony, without patience. Lilah was stripped bare before her brain caught up to the fact that this was actually going to happen. And then he was crawling over her, his mouth sealing over hers.
He kissed her like he was starved, as if he might never kiss her again. Deep, unrelenting kisses that left her gasping beneath him. She reached up to to get at the buttons of his shirt, managing to get one or two free before he was moving down her body, nuzzling the skin between her breasts. Thumbs circling her nipples, he drew one into his mouth, releasing it with a wet sound. He licked at her biting down gently, and laving the spot with his tongue.
Shifting a little to the side, Brasa pulled her knee up and around his waist, fingers drifting so that he could run them up the length of her slit. She keened, spine arching up so far that her shoulders lifted off the mattress. Her skin was seared where they touched, sizzling with sensation that only seemed to grow. He massaged her in wide circles, the pad of his forefinger brushing over her opening.
Rubbing his cheek against her, Brasa moved steadily downwards, kissing and sucking and nipping until he rested between her spread thighs. If Lilah had any thought that he would ease into it, those thoughts were shattered by one long, enthusiastic lick. Sighing into the motion, he sucked at her folds, emitting a contented growl when her legs tightened around his shoulders.
He held her open, wedging his massive body into her hips until her inner thighs ached with the strain. Lilah was beyond caring, her fingers digging into the pillow beneath her as she rose higher and higher towards orgasm. There was no teasing, no drawing this out. Brasa worked with a singular purpose, tongue swirling around her clit, hands holding her up to his mouth.
She grit her teeth, the need so vast and deep that it became a vibrant pain, soothed only by his touch. It tunneled down deep into her bones, sticking in her throat when she cried out, the spasms raking over her voice so that it came out hoarse and rasping.
Lilah breathed forcefully, eyes squeezed shut as he worked her through it, easing up when she shook, too sensitive. When she was able to look down at him, he was rolling his tongue over his lips, eyes focused on where she was still fluttering sporadically. Her mouth went dry at the sight, the hunger that he wasn’t even attempting to veil.
The hand on her hip rotated, and she felt him push two fingers inside her, the motion sending little frissons of electricity over the nerve endings. She shivered. He smiled, fangs peeking out. Then, he brought his fingers to his mouth and sucked them clean, black gaze watching her reaction. Lilah bit her lip, giving up totally on controlling her breathing.
He kissed his way up her body, settling atop her. Lilah pulled him even closer, yanking at the buttons of his shirt. It was nearly impossible to focus when he was kissing her, hands turning her head so that he could nuzzle against her neck, inhaling. She gave herself some credit. She got his shirt unbuttoned and halfway down his arms before she got distracted by a particularly hard nip just above her collarbone.
Hissing, she pulled him up, trying to gain a little leverage to push him over onto his back. Lilah was not successful. He held her down, smirking when she made a small sound of frustration.
“I want,” she started, a whine cutting off the rest of the words.
Brasa caught her hands, holding them down onto the mattress with almost his full weight, “What is it?”
Oh, now he wants to tease, she thought.
“Is this what you want?” His hips swiveled in a slow, firm grind, “I’ll give it to you, if its what you want, querida.”
Lilah moaned, writhing beneath him, desperate to get the friction she needed. She was close, close enough that she was willing to forgo any sense of pride to get there.
“Yes, yes,” she breathed, head thrown back as he rolled his hips against her.
He let go of one of her wrists, and she felt him reach down and open the fly of his slacks. Lifting off just enough to kick off the offending material, Brasa laid back down, gathering her to him. The next kiss was venom soaked, sweet and hot. Lilah groaned, pushing her hips into him, needing to feel him inside her.
Brasa slid in to the hilt in one strong, fluid motion that filled the emptiness inside Lilah completely. Her breath stuttered in her lungs, her legs lifting to accommodate him. He was so fucking hot—his mouth, his body, his cock. Sweat pooled in the hollows and bend of her limbs, darkening the hair at her temple. She gripped his shoulders, pulled on the shirt he still wore, caught by the buttons on his cuffs.
And then he was moving. The sound of his cock pushing into her wet body, the feeling of him both easing and stirring the blooming ache of her arousal, the way he ground out a helpless sound against her neck. It all meshed together, overwhelming her until she could do nothing but hold on as he fucked her.
The pleasure grew inside her, reaching into every inch of her body. She wailed, head thrown back, fingers fisted in his hair. Spurred on, his pace picked up, breath punching out of him when she raked her nails up his back. It took very little to push her the rest of the way over the edge, the feeling spiraling through her.
Brasa’s grip on her tightened as he thrust into her one last time, his spine arched, lips pulled back from his fangs. She could feel him pulsing, could feel every reflexive spasm as he came.
When his strength returned, Brasa rolled gingerly off her, his large hand tracing down the center of her body to rest heavily on her belly. She grasped it, holding him by the wrist as she caught her breath. Lilah looked over at him, smiling at the fact that he was still wearing that shirt, though she’d torn the collar and it was wrinkled beyond nearly all recognition.
Her fingers touched the tear, “That’s going to be a difficult one to explain to the dry cleaner.”
Brasa smirked as he unbuttoned the cuffs around each wrist, “I may keep it like this.”
Lilah’s brows lifted, “Like a memento?”
He hummed in confirmation.
“I didn’t realize you were so sentimental.”
Throwing the shirt off the side of the bed, Brasa laid on his side, observing her from where he’d perched his head on his palm, “I am not, generally. But, with you…” He trailed off as he leaned down and kissed her softly.

Levi studied Eren carefully. It was a rare moment for him to let that side of him show. In fact, it was the lack of dominance that led him to finally agree to go out with him. It was safe. But, as he studied the dimming spark behind the man before him, he felt something else bubble beneath his surface. Interest. Want.

“Babe, I think I might be dying. Has anyone else died at your hands before?
Levi sighed from his seat on the couch and looked over at his boyfriend draped across the armrest, long hair splayed across his arms. Always the flair for dramatics. “You don’t want the answer.”
“Baaabe I love you but can you just maybe give me a timeline? I mean all of those suppressants can’t be good for you, right?” Eren readjusted himself to rest his head against Levi’s shoulder and stare up into his eyes. Fuck. He knew that Levi had a weak spot for those eyes. But he had his reasons for waiting as long as he had, and not even Eren’s best puppy eyes could sway him.
He shrugged Eren off and went back to his paper. “I already told you that I will go off the suppressants when I am ready. Don’t make me repeat myself again.” There was a moment of silence followed by a whine, and then the couch shifted as Eren left the couch. Curious now, Levi peeked above his paper to see where he had gone. Usually Eren would have doubled his efforts and cuddled into his lap or made a fuss by now, but it was unusually silent. During their 4 months together,  Levi had quickly learned that silence was more dangerous than any sound at all.
A shadow above his face made him jump- not that he showed it. Looking up, he found Eren towered over him with a meek smile. Levi raised an eyebrow. “Yes?”
Eren shifted and tucked a long strand of hair behind an ear.  “I know I shouldn’t ask anymore. I just want to be closer to you, that’s all.” Eren dropped behind the couch. Levi couldn’t stop himself from lowering the paper to strain his neck and see what Eren was up to now. “But I know something that will show you that I mean it this time!” From his crouched position, Eren grinned and pulled out a small box. Inside the box was a small slice of cheesecake with a dollop of whipped cream on top. That fucking sneak.
“Tada! I got it for you on my way here! What do you think about that, babe?” Eren was beaming from ear to ear now- he knew exactly what he was doing, and Levi scowled at the thought that he had become so easy to manipulate. Revenge. He had to get revenge.
He reached out for the box, but instead of grabbing it from his hands, he instead dipped a finger into the whipped cream and looked up at Eren’s innocent face. Without breaking eye contact, he slowly lifted the finger up to his lips- and licked. He closed his eyes and enjoyed the taste of the sweet cream. But it wasn’t enough. He brought his finger into his mouth and let saliva pool in his mouth before releasing his finger, making sure that a trail followed, opened his eyes to stare at Eren, and moaned.
The reaction was instant- Eren’s face flushed strawberry pink, and his lips parted in a gasp. Satisfied with the reaction, Levi grabbed the cake and turned back to his paper. “Thanks.”
Behind him he could hear Eren scrambling to find his words. Based on past experience, Eren would mutter something along the lines of being mean and unfair, then settle next to him anyways. What he didn’t expect was for him to screech, “I need to grab my jacket in the clost coset- I mean coat closet!” and ran away. Moments later he heard the slam of the closet door, and Eren was gone. Into the closet to grab his jacket, or not. Maybe Levi had pushed him too far this time.
He knew that Eren was growing increasingly frustrated with the lack of intimacy, but he had never shown it beyond the usual whining. Whatever effect it had on his body was always something he took care of on his own while they were apart. Levi took a bite of his cake and thought of what Eren was doing in that closet. Did he even make it past the door, or was he leaning against it with his hands desperately palming at his jeans, Levi’s name on his lips? Was he imagining him on his knees, mouth open wide to receive his cum? Or perhaps bent over, hands against the wall with his slick dripping down his legs, waiting to be fucked? Would Eren mark him with his scent? Make sure that no one else would come near or try to hurt him again? Let the world know that he was Eren’s and that Eren was his- that the marks along his neck and wrist were badges to prove their connection and-
Levi shook his head, put down his fork and opened his eyes. He didn’t even remember closing them. Looking down at his half eaten cake, Levi took a shaky breath and centered himself. It had been a long time since he had thought about anyone in that way; the first time in a long time he had let himself get carried away. The suppressants should have dampened and stamped these down to a less accessible part of his mind. And yet… it seemed that he had allowed Eren to push his way in far enough for him to start feeling a desire for something more. It was dangerous, and he didn’t know if he was ready or not.
Levi had long finished his share of the cake and his musings long before Eren reappeared. He scratched his neck and sat down on the far edge of the couch. Strands of his long hair stuck to his forehead, and he had missed the button on his jeans. Most noticeably, Eren had returned without any coat at all. He suppressed a laugh and instead wordlessly handed him the last of the cake, ignoring the way Eren’s face lit up and the way his eyes glowed in his direction. He would let it go this time- everything else was something he could deal with another time.
________________________________________________
“I can’t believe it’s taken this long for us to go shopping together,” Eren exclaimed and skipped ahead of him, laughing, “I really feel like once my apartment has things we’ve gotten together you’ll be more comfortable there.” Levi rolled his eyes and followed along. What Eren didn’t mention was that he desperately needed a new coffee table and dresser after Jean had broken them in a drunken rage last week. Alcohol didn’t seem to mix well with his group of friends (though Levi never had any issue with his.) Something always got broken when Eren had them over. But, it was a good excuse to get out and actually be a couple for once. Levi knew that he wasn’t exactly the most flexible person, and Eren had already been more than patient with him in other ways. Going out to pick furniture was the least he should do if he wanted to see where this relationship could go.
“Remind me again how Jean managed to break so many things in one night. The table was in your living room, but the dresser?” Levi paused to look at a table in the store window. Sleek, black, all edges. It would have been nice in a more modern house. Unfortunately, Eren’s taste seemed to veer more towards what he would call “eclectic.” Really more just a room full of things that were found on their own with no regard of how they fit together. There was a tan chair that had been found next to the dumpster, an olive couch with two too many pillows, and a glass figure that Mikasa had inexplicably gifted him that sat in the corner. No, the table that needed to go into that room would have to have more character to not stand out even more.
“Uhhh so about that…” Eren turned back to stand next to him and scratched his head. Levi raised an eyebrow.
“Yes?”
“We were talking and Jean brought up how he hadn’t gotten any from Marco ever since their fight over wedding cake flavors, and I had joked how his condoms were probably expired by now because mine probably were too,” Eren was rambling now- his nerves showing in his frantic hands and the growing height of his voice, “and then he said ‘BET’ and I didn’t take the bet I swear!” His face reddened and lowered his head, no longer to look in Levis' direction. “Because I know it’s private and Jean’s the last person I want to talk to about this kind of stuff, but then he called me a bitch for not taking you like a good omega yet and then ran to my room to check.
So I ran after him and he might have crashed into it when I punched him..”
His hands were settled now, fists at his sides.  He turned and looked at Levi with a fire behind his eyes that he hadn’t seen before. “So maybe it wasn’t completely his fault, but when you’re ready isn’t any of his fucking business. It’s our business when we mate, and fucking Jean isn’t going to be any part of it.”
Eren had gotten considerably closer to him now, and it was in that moment that Levi had truly seen Eren for what he was. Towering figure, glowering expression, overpowering aura- an alpha through and through, ready to protect his mate at the slightest threat. It was intoxicating. And then in a flash it was gone again. Eren blinked, and his usual boyish charm returned as he scrunched his shoulders up and he let out a nervous laugh. “So yeah! After that he ran out and landed on the table, and now we’ve got his credit card to get replacements!”
Levi studied Eren carefully. It was a rare moment for him to let that side of him show. In fact, it was the lack of dominance that led him to finally agree to go out with him. It was safe. But, as he studied the dimming spark behind the man before him, he felt something else bubble beneath his surface. Interest. Want.
He shook it off and pulled a sputtering Eren behind him, leading him into the store. “Idiot, if you have his credit card you shouldn’t even be looking at the tables- your taste is atrocious anyways. All you need to do,” he said with a smirk, “is look at the price tag.”
________________________________________________
Eren bounced in the seat next to him, all smiles and laughs. After their shopping spree at the furniture store, they had decided to stop putting off that trip they were always talking about. Thanks to a well timed lunch with Marco, Levi was able to time it perfectly. Marco could get his revenge on Jean for ordering the blueberry icing without asking, and Levi could get his for the table/dresser incident. They had even become allies of sorts. After all, omegas like them needed to stick together.
The flight attendant walked over and offered them water, breaking him from his thoughts. He took the bottles and passed one to Eren, who was now burning a small hole into his seat with his vibrations.
“Calm down before someone complains, idiot. We still have another hour before we get to Taipei.”
Eren whined and looked over at him, pouting. “But I’ve never been out of the country before, let alone with a boyfriend! Just because you get to travel for your job doesn’t mean that the rest of us regular people can.”
Levi sighed, unable to resist those ocean eyes staring at him. “If things go well in Taipei, we can see about going out together more often.”
“Yeah?” Eren whooped before remembering where they were. He let out a nervous laugh and shrunk into his seat. “Y-yeah, I would like that.” His hand reached across the armrest and took Levi’s into his own. “I don’t really know why you wanted to go on a trip so suddenly, but I’m really glad you did.” A smile crept onto his face before he could stop himself.
“I’m glad too.”
 ________________________________________________
“What do you mean you don’t have my luggage?” He demanded, using the little Chinese he knew.
Levi slammed his hands onto the counter, startling the woman behind it with a jump. “I’m sorry sir, but it seems that it was accidentally placed on another plane so we are unable to help you at this time. If you could leave your hotel information with us, we can ensure that it will be delivered to you once it has arrived back in Taipei tomorrow.”
Well fuck.
Cursing under his breath, he passed the details to the woman and stormed off, leaving a very confused Eren to trail behind him.
“Um… so I take it they didn’t have your suitcase? I don’t speak Chinese so…”
“Does it look like I have my suitcase with me?”
“No…”
“Then there’s your answer. It was on the wrong plane so they’re bringing it to the hotel tomorrow.”
“Well that’s great!” Eren caught up to him and snaked an arm around his shoulder. “The hotel will have toothbrushes and stuff, and you can just borrow everything else from me, right babe?”
Levi nodded and let Eren lead them towards the taxi. After shooting off the hotel address to the driver, he tuned out Eren’s excited chattering in his ear. This should have been a chance to enjoy time away and sort out his complicated feelings about mating with Eren once and for all. If he was ready to act on those growing desires that had been building all this time.
Just one problem- his suppressants were in the suitcase the airline had lost.
 ________________________________________________
Their things, well, Eren’s things, were dropped off straight onto the floor as soon as the hotel door was opened, as was Eren’s jaw.
The next five minutes were spent watching him flit about the room, touching and commenting on everything he saw.
“Wow! Levi there’s fruit on the table!”
“Look at the size of this tub!”
“Babe you can see 101 from this window!”
Then he jumped onto the bed and turned back to Levi, beat red. “Babe, the bed…it’s so...”
It was easy to see his train of thought. A romantic getaway to a foreign country, a few nights in an opulent hotel. One large bed to share. Most couples might have already tangled themselves in the sheets and given the bed a test by now. Under normal circumstances, Levi would have given in and kissed in the bed for a few minutes before they left for the first round of sightseeing, but today was different. Without the suppressants, it was too dangerous a game to play.
Levi stood up and put on his shoes and muttered,  “We should get going, otherwise we won’t make it to the places you want to see today.” He turned away and ignored the drop in Eren’s shoulders; told himself that the dragging feet behind him were fine. It was safer this way. But the ache inside, he wasn’t sure if it was his heat starting to awaken or his guilt tugging at his heart. And he was too scared to find out.
 ________________________________________________
The afternoon went surprisingly smoothly. Once they had gotten out and started walking, Eren had perked up significantly. They had chosen a hotel close to the heart of the city and the part he visited most during his trips, so it was easy. Easy was a good thing, because as they started their ascent to the top of Taipei 101, Levi felt it. They had just finished waiting in line and gotten into the cramped elevator when someone bumped into him and he fell back into Eren, who immediately wrapped his arms around to steady him and keep them from falling. In an instant he could smell him- cedar, pepper, citrus. Why hadn’t he noticed how good Eren smelled before? Was it always this intoxicating? Or was it the twinkling lights atop the elevator, coupled by the dizzying speeds that had fooled him into more than what it was?
Before he could answer the question, the cheery attendant’s voice announced they had arrived and the elevator opened with a ding. Back in the bright and open space, Levi felt his head clear up. His body was still tingling from Eren’s touch, but at least he could think clearly enough to know that his suppressant from yesterday was starting to wear off. He forced a smile as Eren called him over to the windows, and wondered if he could last until tomorrow.
________________________________________________
By the time they had reached the night market at sundown, it had become clear that Levi was quickly losing a battle he shouldn’t have hoped to win in the first place. The warmth he had felt in the elevator earlier had grown into a fire- it was actually a miracle that Eren hadn’t noticed yet. The man was either distracted by the dazzling city or just plain dense.
It had already gotten so bad that he resigned himself to just a shaved ice for dinner instead of any of the other treats he had pushed onto Eren.
“Babe, are you sure you don’t want any of this fruit? It’s really good!” Eren beamed at him and blabbered on, still unaware that his light touches and insistences of feeding him a bite every now and then had left Levi in an increasingly uncomfortable state. He watched as Eren lifted his tanghulu, a skewer of sugar coated tomatoes, up to his lips and pulled one off with his teeth. Perhaps this was karma for all of the times he had left Eren to hide in bathrooms and closets before. He could no longer hear. He could no longer think. All he could see was Eren’s lips dripping with tomato juice as he ate, and it took everything he had to not tangle his hands into that tangled mop of hair and lick everything off.
He felt the cup from his hand slip as Eren grabbed his hand. They had stopped moving. When had they stopped moving? His vision was getting blurry and he could no longer breathe properly. Then Eren broke through with those startling green eyes, wide with concern.
“Babe?” Eren put a hand on his forehead and before he could stop himself, he let out a moan. Eren’s hand flew back in surprise, grabbing at his shoulders instead. “Babe what’s wrong? Are you ok?”
He had lost. Completely and utterly lost the fight against his body. He reached up and hid himself in the crook of Eren’s neck.
“You idiot, you don’t know what’s wrong? What do you think was in my suitcase?”
Eren sputtered and cursed. “A- are you… did your suppressant wear off here? Is that why you’ve been acting so weird all day?”
Levi reached up and whispered into his ear, “Can’t you smell it?”
He felt Eren steady his hands on Levi’s hips. He couldn’t stop a moan from escaping. He hadn’t felt how strong Eren was before, not really. But right now, in the center of a bustling night market in a new country, those hands were all he wanted or needed.
Eren let out a shaky breath and grabbed his hand, dragging him through the street towards the entrance, panicking all the way. “I don’t know why you didn’t tell me! What if they have a replacement here you can take, or what if something happened when I wasn’t there?” He paused and stared at him. “What if someone else smelled you first?” His eyes were dark and swimming with desire, yet the hard line across his lips showed his determination to exercise restraint. If he hadn’t smelled Levi before, he definitely did now.
“Just take me back to the hotel and we’ll deal with the rest later.”
Eren nodded and guided him into the taxi. They were lucky that it would just be a five minute ride. Any longer and one of them would snap. Eren had already pressed himself into the other side of the taxi, trying to keep as much distance from them as possible, and Levi wasn’t fairing much better. After all, he had been taking suppressants for years. Whatever he was feeling now was just the beginning of the kickback from denying his body all this time. Fortunately, the driver hadn’t said a word, just rolled his eyes and cut through the streets to get them back without delay.
They had arrived just in time for the last of Levi’s restraint to fade. As soon as the door to their room was shut, Levi grasped at Eren’s shirt and pulled him into a searing kiss. They had nice kisses before. Warm kisses with polite lips and gentle hands. This was not one of them- all teeth and tongue, with his hands in Eren’s hair and Eren’s hands snaking down to grab at his ass, pulling him in tighter. He was wet. Aching. He needed this.
And then, it was gone. Eren had broken free, eyes wild and lips glossy from saliva. His whole body was tense, shaking. “I need to go.” And he ran into the bathroom, locking himself in.
Frozen and dumbfounded, Levi stood there staring at the expanse Eren had just been in. Wasn’t this what Eren wanted all along? To not only be with Levi Ackerman, but to conquer him? And now when he was offering himself up on a silver platter, he ran?
“What do you mean you need to go, idiot? Weren’t you just waiting for me to jump into bed with you this afternoon?” He was furious. He was aching. Slick was dripping down his legs, his mouth full of Eren’s saliva, and yet Eren wasn’t there to make the fire within him settle. He was burning alive and his mate was hiding on the other side of a door.
“G-go sleep in the bed tonight! I’ll wait in here until your luggage gets here and we can get your suppressants.”
Levi groaned with each step he took to the bathroom and peeled off his pants once he had hit solid wood. Even the friction from walking was painful now. Panting, he leaned against it and slid down. He imagined that Eren was doing the same.
“What if I don’t want the suppressant?”
Silence.
Then, just above a whisper, “I don’t want you to decide that until you’re back on it. You’re too important to me to- God- to risk losing because I couldn’t control myself for one night. I want us to mate because you want to… not because of your heat.”
Levi paused. Was it because of his heat? It was hard to think beyond his need , but he forced himself to focus for just a minute. Before the trip, he had already seen Eren prove that he was more than just a safe, albeit slightly annoying, choice. Time and time again, when Levi or someone else pushed him, he refused to give in. The boy had even broken his own furniture for his sake. And now, inches away from taking what he so clearly wanted, the alpha had chosen to instead lock himself in a bathroom to avoid making one that would take Levi’s away. The boy was nothing if not stubborn. And he loved that about him.
Love..
It had been a long time since he had said those words to anyone, and even longer since he felt it. And this trip, while convenient, was also when they were supposed to be a chance for them to be together, and possibly mate.
“Do you love me?” Levi asked.
“Of course! I love you so much I want to scream! I want to dance. I want to… I want..”
Levi closed his eyes and took a deep breath. This wasn't the way he planned, but it was the time. Part of him knew that he had been ready before, but needed just one last push.
“Open the door, Eren.”
“What? No!”
Levi moaned. Any energy he had left had been used up deciding that he was ready, and he didn’t have anything left in him to do anything but want.
“Eren, I- fuck, I love you too. And I want this. So if you don’t open that door and fuck me now, I’m going to-”
Levi yelped as the door jolted open and Eren caught him in his lap. Blinking up, he met Eren’s eyes.
“You love me? You really mean it?”
“Yes, you idiot, so are you going to show me that you’re my alpha? Or do I need to go take care of things myself?”
He could see it. The delicate restraint that Eren had snapped, and he threw him to the floor with a growl. He straddled the omega and leaned in, a breath away from Levi’s lips. “Do you want me to fuck you here or on the bed?”
Levi arched into his body and wrapped a leg around him.
“Here.”
“Good.” Eren crashed his lips down and finally, finally let go. All of the tension they had built over these past months was released without reservation. They parted and Levi groaned as he moved on to nip at his ears, his neck, everything he could reach. Everything he didn’t dare touch before. Everything was his now, and Levi gave it to him freely.
“God you’re so fucking beautiful” Eren grunted as he slipped his hand under Levi’s shirt.
Levi responded by bucking up into him, crying out from the friction he had been desperately craving. “There’s no time for that. I need you inside me. Now.”
Eren chuckled and came back up to peck him on the nose. “Whatever my mate desires.”
Without warning, Levi was flipped around, hands at his sides and cheek stinging against the icy marble. Levi could feel Eren pulling down his boxers and the soft “fuck” that followed once they were off.
“You’re so slick already. All for me.” He bent over Levi and let his cock rub up against him. “Do you want my cock inside of you?”
Levi heard himself let out an embarrassing whine. “Fuck me. Fuck me and mark me with your scent.”
“God- fuck- I’m going to fuck you until you forget everyone else. I’m going to cover you with my cum so no one else comes near you. Everyone is going to know you’re mine.” Eren growled and bit him on the shoulder, and finally gave Levi what he had been begging for.
Eren lined up his cock at his entrance, and pushed in, moaning at the feeling of being swallowed in by Levi. Once he was fully inside, he paused to give Levi a moment to adjust. Levi instead felt a hand reach down and wipe the slick off the inside of his leg. A moment later there was a warm drip on his back, and a moan.
“You taste so fucking good, babe. Have you tasted yourself before?”
Levi craned his neck to look behind him, and found Eren with eyes on him, his tongue wrapped around a glistening finger. He smirked and released them with a pop, and brought them down to Levi’s mouth. “Don’t you want to see how good you taste?”
Levi opened his mouth and let Eren wrap his hand around his chin, pushing the fingers in to give him a taste. Not breaking eye contact, he closed his lips around the fingers and sucked hard. Eren’s hips jerked in response, and they moaned together. Unable to wait any longer, Eren started to move. It had been to log for the both of them- Eren quickly set a furious pace and Levi was left gasping and cursing beneath him. He could feel the slick from Eren’s hand and his own drool pooling on the tile beneath him. Neither of them would last long, but they had all the time in the world to take their time later. Maybe right after, even.
“ Nnggh , Babe you feel so good. God I’m so- ahh I need to see your face when I mark you.”
“Yes- fuck, turn me around so you can cum all over me, Eren. Let me taste your cum.”
Eren moaned and twisted him around, staying inside. Once he had turned over, Levi grabbed at Eren's shoulders and pulled him down for a kiss. He could feel his orgasm coiling in him, threatening to overtake him at any moment.
"Eren ahhh I want-"
"I know Levi, you want my cum on you?"
"Yes!" Levi screamed, "Mark me, make me yours!"
Eren took Levi's cock into his hands and stroked him with fervor, that coil deep inside released. He let out a shout and felt his own cum dribble down Eren’s hand onto his stomach. Unable to stock he continued to buck into Eren’s hand and grasped for something, anything to catch him as he fell.
“F-fuck, Levi!” Eren yelled and frantically pulled out, chanting his name and covering Levi with his cum. He felt it hit his chest, his stomach, and finally near his own cock, swirling together with his own.
Eren fell on top of him, hissing as his knot rubbed against Levi’s thigh. They held each other like that, spent and sensitive, until the floor grew cold again. Then Eren picked Levi up and cradled him, taking them both to the plush bed to cuddle under the blankets. Levi wrapped an arm around Eren, and sighed. The heat was still there, but it had simmered down to the point where he could at least breathe again.
Eren held him closer with a happy sigh. It seemed like he had made the right choice after all. What was replacing the ache and longing before was being replaced with a secure and content hum. It was new and strange, but he didn’t hate it.
“Babe?”
“Hmm?”
“Did you mean it before? When you said you wanted to be mine?”
“Are you really asking me that when I’m still covered in your cum?”
“A-ah, right..”
Levi huffed and buried his head into the crook of Eren's neck.
"Don’t ask stupid questions anymore.”
Eren shifted to respond, but before he could a ring came from the end of the nightstand.
Sighing, he muttered an apology and reached over to pick up the phone.
“Jean? I’m kind of busy right now.”
“You BITCH I CANNOT BELIEVE YOU FUCKING SPENT THAT MUCH MONEY ON THE TABLE WHEN I FIND YOU I AM GOING TO KI-’’
Levi grabbed the phone out of Eren’s hands and hung up with a click.
“He’s interrupting.”
Eren sat up, eyebrows scrunched and head tilted in question. “...Hey babe?”
Levi turned around and stood up. “Yes?”
“Did you… plan this trip so we wouldn’t be there when Jean got his credit card bill?”
He walked towards the bathroom and turned at the doorway with a smirk. “You mean you’ve just figured that out now?”
“Babe, I thought you wanted to go on a romantic trip! I didn’t know there was an ulterior motive!”
“Of course I did, the timing was just convenient. Now you can either sit there and think about it some more like a dumbass, or join me while I test out this shower.” Without looking, he turned back and walked into the bathroom. “So what’ll it be, babe ?”
He heard a loud thump behind him and let out a laugh.
“C-coming!”

I Fell For You-3

Eliza’s pov
I woke up on the beach gagging and coughing up water. I looked down the beach back at the fishing pier. There were flashings lights and tow trucks cleaning up my mess. I slowly stood and stumbled down the sidewalk next to the marina and just kept walking. I walked until I found a cab. Luckily I pulled Jared’s money he kept in the center console. “Hey can you take me to Joshua Tree?”
“You’re all wet lady!”
“Yeah I needed to go for a swim.” I smiled.
He rolled his eyes, “Yeah sure get in.” I rang out my clothes the best I could before I got in. “You ok miss?”
“Yeah, I’m fine. Just drunk and ready to go home.” I smiled and sat back. “You mind if I take a nap?” We had a three hour drive ahead of us.
“Not at all.” I laid down across the back seat, and drifted to sleep.
I woke up when we were thirty minutes out. We carried on small talk, and I gave him the address of an old friend that lived out here in the desert. I paid him when we arrived, and bid him goodbye. I slowly walked up to the door and knocked softly. Kat yelled from the other side of the door. I had known Kat most of my life. She and I were climbing partners from the time we were eight until she married Doug six years ago. They went off and explored the world together.
She finally opened the door and I waved to the cab driver. “Holy shit Liz?! Oh my god how are? What are you doing here?!” she pulled me into a warm hug and pulled me inside. “Dude you look like shit.”
I gave a small laugh, “And I feel like it. Sorry to show up out of the blue like this. I don’t have my phone.”
“It’s fine. What happened?”
“I drove my husbands car off the end of the Dog Town pier.”
“What the fuck? Are you ok?”
“Yeah I think I bruised a few ribs is all.”
“Shit come on take a shower. I’ll give you some of my clothes and you can fill me in.”
I gratefully accepted and went about my task. When I got out she was at the kitchen table with freshly made tea. I took the seat across from her and laughed, “Well how have you been?”
“I’ve been doing fine. The question is what the fuck is up with you?”
“Well three years ago I got married and this last year has been shit.” I simply stated and took a sip of my tea.
“Yeah I saw you married Jared Leto. I’ve heard a lot of mixed feelings about him. What’d he do to you?”
I sighed and looked at the hot liquid in my hands, “I don’t know.” I was starting to question my actions and whether or not they might have been justified. “He played Joker again and he hasn’t been right since.”
“He didn’t fucking hurt you did he?” Kat was strongly against domestic violence. Her dad had beat her and her mother.
“No he would never put his hands on me. Just neglected me I guess. He’s always busy and is always leaving to go on trips with our friends.”
“You think he’s got a side bitch?”
“No because he posts pictures of the trips all the time and so do our friends.”
“Where’s he going? And why is he going with your friends?”
“They go climbing! Every time we’re supposed to go he starts a fight and ruins it so I don’t go. Last time we went climbing together was last summer. Nothing bad happened, and we both had a great time. He just stopped. I don’t get it.”
She sat quietly and looked at me “Maybe he has some sort of turmoil going on in his head and he’s struggling with it right now. Maybe you should stick it out and do your own thing until he comes back around.”
“How long am I supposed to wait? It’s been a year!”
“I understand that. I’m just trying to help. Hey! Why don’t you and I go on a camping trip for a while. Just us like we used to. Get you back to nature and let Jared think through his shit. Doug’s gone on business for two weeks and I need a distraction. What do you say?”
“Ok but I’ve got nothing.”
“You literally drove his car off the pier and walked away didn’t you?” I nodded.
“I don’t necessarily want to go back and get my shit either.”
“Bullshit we’ll do it tonight after dark. We’ll be super sneaky like we used to be when we’d sneak out of your parents house. Today we’ll plan our trip, but first you need to get some sleep.”
I awoke several hours later refreshed to the smell of food. We sat and ate, “Where were you thinking about going camping?”
She chewed her food, “Yosemite?”
“Can’t, I’ve already used up my camping days for the year. How about Spain?”
“Spain? I don’t have that kind of money right now.”
“It’s fine I got it.”
“Ok where then?”
“Villanueva del Rosario. It’s a town in southern Spain. It’s gnarly as fuck.”
“Let’s do it then. How are we going to get your stuff without him knowing?”
We parked down the road from the house, and walked. Sneaking in the north entrance we skirted around the cameras to the other end of the house. I peeked into the window. It seemed the whole house was quiet. We sat below the living room window gathering ourselves. “I don’t know if he’s home or not. Put your phone on silent and call my phone. I’m sure he’ll answer it.”
“What do I say?” she whispered.
“I don’t know make something up.”
She furrowed her brow and pushed the call button. I watched over the window sill; the light from my office switched on.
Hello? His voice sounded groggy.
“Uh hi. Is, uh, is Liza there?”
Who’s this?
“It’s Kat we used to climb together and I was wondering if Liza wanted to catch up. Haven’t seen each other in a few years.” she let out a nervous laugh and tugged on the hem of my shirt.
Well she’s not here. Were his words slurred?
“Oh, well do you know when she’ll be back?”
Fuck if I know.
The phone disconnected and the living room lamps flashed on. One of the light bulbs continued to flicker so Jared pushed it off the table. Sending it into a million pieces. I loved that lamp. He turned and lowered himself in the deep white chair. He was dressed head to toe in black with his head buried deep inside his hood. His eyes were red and swollen. Part of me wanted to run and tell him I was sorry, hold him and tell him everythings fine. It’s not though. I need to get away for a while without anyone knowing. He had a bottle of one of my favorite whiskies in his hand. Tilting his head back he finished the rest of what was left. He stood and threw the empty bottle at the wall screaming. I sat back under the window and pulled me knees to my chest, crying.
“Does he usually act like this?”
“No.” I wiped my face and peeked back over the sill. He was curled up in the chair on his side crying. Soon enough he passed out and we snuck into the back yard. Spotting an open door on the patio I stopped Kat and formed a game plan. “Follow me and watch our back. Ok?”
She nodded and hooked a finger through one of my belt loops. We tip-toed to the coset we kept all the climbing gear in. “Keep watch.” I scrambled to gather everything I’d need for Spain as fast as I could. Everything was going fine until all my cams and draws fell on the floor. I froze and waited for a response from Jared, but was met with nothing. I shoved both collections into my bag and finished gathering my things. The next trick was getting to the bedroom. We had to pass the living room and the floorboards squeaked.
I glanced at the mess he made and wanted to cry. I didn’t want to see him like this, but how many times have I been like this because of him?
We made it to the bedroom. It was a mess. The lamp was knocked over and the mattress leaned against the frame and box spring. I turned the corner to the closet and it was destroyed too. I quickly gathered clothes and anything I’d need to leave the country and shoved them into my bag. After zipping it up I began to clean everything up. “Eliza! What are you doing!”
“Chill, he’s passed out.” I fixed the mattress, and made the bed, picked up various other things and closed the curtains. I turned off the lights and we crept back down the hall.
When we reached the living room I couldn’t leave all the glass there for him to step on. I put my bag by the back door, and went back to get the broom.
“Stop what are you doing?!”
“Hush! Come help me.” I grabbed the broom from the closet and swept up the glass. Dropping the second scoop of glass into the trash woke Jared. Both of us quickly ducked into the kitchen out of site. He stumbled to the bedroom and disappeared. We both let out a breath and finished our task. Before we left I turned the lights out and left the Tylenol on the island in the kitchen. We were almost to the gate when I remembered my phone. “Fuck, I have to go back and get my phone.”
“No, if you take it they’ll track you down.” she was right. We ran down the street away from the house laughing. When we made it to the car we high fived, “Let’s go to Norway, Spain’s hot as fuck right now.”
“Bet.”
Instead of driving back to her house we went straight to the airport, and got a room at the hotel next door.

tube hit periscope and Twitter so looking for that LinkedIn connection will get there all right as he said the links there we go there we are good morning all right tech coffee order to talk tech news business startups and anything related to tech coffee maybe in the morning we'll will spend about a half an hour chatting over the news and then we'll document all the all the sites and news we went through on tech coffee org so if you want to follow along follow along on Twitter tech coffee and if you want to find out after the fact all of the video content and news that we go over and share will be out tech coffee org let's see our first first story here from ventureBeat summer slump continues for game industry TV spend post that over on Twitter let's see Super Mario 2 in action sweet picture I let's see game brands just for just Bend for the third month in a row okay so it's the gaming brands 6.2 from June's eight point seven Nintendo Domini with 60% rockstar game 36 so it's their TV spend anyway so that's great I mean they see the trends where less people are watching TV more people are actually watching twitch of their games or talking about their games on social media platforms so this spend is specifically on TV level of your dreams is partner with I spot TV there was on TV ad measures in an attribution platform monthly report okay leaks leads thanks to its estimated 3.7 million on nine ads that ran nearly 2,200 times generating 386 million impressions the Super Mario 2 ad about $900,000 level of your dreams okay so their priorities were Nick team Nick and Nick Tunes during shows like spongebob the loud house and iCarly rockstar spent 2.2 on the Grand Theft Auto game of course that aired 88 times resulting in 48 million impressions CBS NBC and FX top programs The Late Show Tonight Show and The Late Show hmm James Corden Stephen Colbert and Jimmy Fallon so I guess the audience would make sense there for GTA let's see THQ games third place with 117 thousand for two ads aired 60 times generate 4.2 million impressions that was on TV channels like NBC MAV TV NBC Sports India round IndyCar racing motorcycle racing and motocross okay that makes sense Madden let's see if they had oh yeah okay Madden EA Sports spent 53,000 I'm placing one commercial bring it in for Madden NFL two want me arrange 66 times around 13 million impressions it ran on ESPN NFL Network and espn2 facepunch SportsCenter first take and get up Xbox closes out only spending four thousand 4400 placing a single add four years five six times generate 1.3 million impressions as it aired on TBS during eleague well that makes a lot of sense so it's interesting I guess as TV becomes more irrelevant this is the TV and all the different networks are the different apps that we use on it makes sense so it should seem less ads it's just interesting you have to build your own network in so you're buying your network on TV and that network is dwindling and then social is growing but it's less social this platform like NBC this plant Twitter or CBS Facebook it's more the brand itself has to be on anything that people are paying attention to so it's really your number of impressions or views are really gonna be on you as a brand across all the different platforms in here so that's what probably people are struggling with what these brands are struggling with is it's now on us to build up our brand recognition we can't just buy into it all right that was from ventureBeat this next one's from Venture Beat Magic the Gathering eSports expands with players tour and rivals League in 2020 thank you yeah that's what we like to see there's that tech coffee you want to follow along just follow the hashtag tech coffee and I'll be posting the the article as I read them on Twitter so you can click into the article and follow along with me as well good morning so this was August 14th which was about two weeks ago night's gathering on several changes to its eSports and Pro tabletops late today new addition to its Pro League was another cosets magic will feature its top broadcast events just aren't digital magic okay so it's not just broadcasting the players to her o regional tournament system expand a global play chance to qualify for 2020 mythic invitationals magic pro league is coming back adding rivals League World Championship brings together top players feels a bit confusing don't be surprised I had a hard time following all as well okay so here's the explanation of how it differs from Elaine chase VP of eSports quote magic is growing in both tabletop and MTG arena and we need a competitive structure that can grow with it okay what the table top players tour and MTG arena mythic Invitational offer twice once a qualification slot see players around the world vastly increasing play opportunities no matter which platform you prefer alright so you can do it either way and still qualify for example the nine regional players - or events wall for 3600 invites double the approximate 1,800 invites of a meal tour mythic championship system so she continues each MTG arena mythic Invitational will be fed by two mythic qualifier tournaments the top 1200 ranked players and monthly MTG play and constructed or limited at the end of each qualifying month eligible to compete OTG Arena players will get a new way to increase their mythic points with mythic point challenge tournaments alright these are new events on the MTG arena that allow those that allow those who don't want to compete at the highest levels to increase their mythic point count to rank up to rivals and get their shot at the MPL already seen and then the the challenge tournaments we've already seen that this year all right players tour is all about paper magic because it's the three regions Americas Europe and ancient Asia Pacific no brawls for you it's a format which you brew a deck just one copy of a card plus commander so I wonder if they were didn't choose we're always looking at innovate on formats it'll make the best competitive and broadcast experience great so if you're an MTG player I'm curious what you think about the new format and if you're going to be a part of the regional play or even care to make it to make it as a rival I guess as yeah let's check Oh priorities right okay let's see enter meet Magic the Gathering mmm all right next up no born eSports lineup expands click eSports launching fortnight tournament series alright alright know born Melbourne Melbourne eSports open Ubisoft experience a new click eSports fortnight series for all big lineup events of Australian eSports community over the coming months Melbourne the first leg expands so August 31st through September 2nd tournament announcements additional events so there's an event is to feature mix of open and pro events so over 40 East war including fortnight minecraft overwatch League of Legends rocket Lee Pokemon both card and game formats Forza Motorsport Forza horizon halo 3 Rainbow six siege Starcraft 2 csgo call of duty black ops for Street Fighter 5 Dragon Ball Z Tekken 7 Super Smash bro ultimate and melee that's quite the that's quite the gaming tournament right like that's quite the expansive games let's see so they're just making an announcement here will host League of Legends finals range both these players the finals australia high school youth sports champion featured finals for o so also the high school esports championship will be hosted there that is produced by tag live ESL Fairfax events and entertainment supported by the city Melbourne taking a mission I'm becoming Australia's home of eSports there you go get a focus on it weekend's upcoming are you ok mental health clarity are you ok oh that's great supporting on Thursday September 12th ahead of the event to highlight you know soft experience support from the charity great since romantic emotion growth curve Twitter all right some numbers the lace report which surveyed 1,200 households watch 41% had watch eSports without one quarter participants actually following eSports teams than 8 percent said they would enjoy culture around watching eSports they participate social connections and one third said it was from the challenge at a participation level one quarter said they had participated in eSports with half saying that it played for social connection and one third saying it was for the challenge it's real alright there's that now three more from eSports insider and then to beta kits and we'll wrap it up Oceana recap let's look at that just a shout-out to the are you ok group they have are you ok day September 12 I support an initiative like that conversation would change a life ask are you okay listen encourage action and check in are you ok day is for 2019 Thursday 12 September Thursday 12 September is are you ok day thanks for all the work you guys are doing out there are you ok I'm gonna put a link to that also yeah we need more honest conversations around suicide prevention all right eSports insider this week in eSports MasterCard Ford call of duty franchising its footprint in league of legends so big brands advertising in these communities where there's lots of people doing the activity right playing the games there's also this tiered system of average players advanced players pro players and then the consumption of the content around that gameplay right it's not just that all these people are playing now there's this giant breath that's growing of people who are also consuming that content of that gameplay so Ford and MasterCard are jumping on the bandwagon here and when I stay jumping on the this is about their expansion so they've already been there spans Riot Games partnership to cover League of Legends Championship Series global partnership with MasterCard League of Legends champions and deal with the summer split finals in Detroit they're sponsoring the opening ceremonies Ford launches fordzilla to house national eSports teams ok they have a neat logo they've made here check it out here it's over on Twitter timcanpy Ford Forza Motorsport seven other racing titles be recruiting national teams France Germany Italy Spain and UK mitzvah'd gaming ecology franchise spots it's it had acquired the Florida slot in the upcoming call of duty franchise League miami-based eSports organization owns supported mayhem a franchise in act Activision Blizzard's overwatch League okay so these different companies are buying out the league's and running the league's crink Crowe in sports Kroenke sports and entertainment also acquired the spot a spot in the franchise Call of Duty League securing a la franchise this isn't the first la franchise spot in the league to be sold by Activision Blizzard however with immortals gaming club ready already owning the spot in the exact same city ok.well leagues are expanding I guess more franchises are coming up and then bigger brands are wanting a part of the action so it's just gonna get more competitive on the business side let's see speaking of that here's the here's the next piece of news for from esports insider yes girl we play announce the second season of forge of masters league has reveals details surrounding second season of Counter Strike global Offensive or forged masters taking place in autumn there's a total price purse $100,000 or any 1000 euros Jesus can't just scratch the hell out of my leg and a land final in Kiev Ukraine so different formatting it'll include European teams having previously only been accommodating people from the CIS region 12 European teams and 12 CIS rosters will qualify for the upcoming season Dmitry visits Development Director and we play told these sports insider the goal quote the goal of this league is to find train and temper new masters of csgo professional scene for teams we create conditional identical conditions identical to the game in Tier one Peschel on and for viewers a spectacular show and format that reveals the abilities of players nurturing grassroots and bringing young blood to this stage this is where the excitement drama and great show comes in creating opportunities for native brand integrations alright open qualifiers will kick off September 14th the first phase spanning over October 1st to the 13th the offline way and forge match we'll be hosted in we plays eSports Arena on November 15th through the 17th the two regions so he continues though this is Eugene community manager at csgo unlike season 1 yep so that two regions again but he continues that sir he just won't clash yet in the first stage of online phase by the end of the first stage three teams from each region will qualify to then come together in the two final chances that teams have to go on to the main event there are two remaining EU and CIS teams battle about sweet that's gonna be fun to watch I want to watch that unfold so I shared that on the Twitter tech coffee org and then use the hashtag tech coffee all one word you can find all this later on tech coffee org over to beta kit our first article 11 Canadian companies participating in y combinator summer 2019 cohort so I'm interested in who's those companies are summer program Y Combinator's 197 overall chuubo was founded co-founder according to me the two turned Kubo into the G2D2, 2: first week
Tumblr media
The campus of the China Three Gorges Hotel has a small river, full of waterlilies and lotus flowers. Beside it runs a main road, along which big water trucks run, shooting atomised water from cannon-like structures; we are told this is to reduce the air pollution.
After an introductory party on Monday, the conference opened at 9:00 on Tuesday morning. In the first week, much of the activity is minicourses 1 and 2, the first on “Laplacian eigenvalues and optimality” given by Rosemary and me, the second on “Topics in representation theory” by Tullio Ceccherini-Silberstein.
But first, some words on the two logos, which appear at the top of the first post in this sequence.
The meeting is being held in the Three Gorges Mathematics Research Centre, whose logo is on the right. It is part of the China Three Gorges University, near the famous Three Gorges on the Yangtse River. The University’s logo, which I am sure your search engine will quickly find, features three vertical wavy shapes, which presumably are intended to suggest water cascading through the three gorges. The TGMRC logo cleverly replaces these random shapes by integral signs, which they somewhat resemble.
The TGMRC is on a corridor on the top floor of a U-shaped building called L1 or L2, depending on which side you enter. The top of the U is closed by a high bridge. So it somewhat resembles the new location of the ICMS in Edinburgh, except that that building is entirely enclosed, whereas the central courtyard of L1/L2 is open to sun and rain. There is a nice lecture room with comfortable chairs. Although there is no public space except for the corridor (where the welcome party was held), there are a number of rooms which can be used as “breakout rooms” for small discussions.
The conference logo on the left is a Deza graph. There has been a recent upsurge of activity on Deza graphs, which I suspect is driven by Sergey Goryainov.
A Deza graph is a regular connected graph for which the number of common neighbours of two vertices takes just two distinct values. If adjacent vertices have one number of common neighbours and non-adjacent vertices the other, then the graph is strongly regular. So a strictly Deza graph is defined to be a Deza graph of diameter 2 which is not strongly regular. The graph in the G2D2 logo is the smallest strictly Deza graph, as you can easily verify. I do not know whether the colours have any mathematical significance.
On Wednesday, Dmitry Panasenko told us about a clever computer search which found all the strictly Deza graphs on up to 21 vertices. For one parameter set (I think on 20 vertices) there are many non-isomorphic graphs (I think around 20 or 30, though I didn’t copy down the number from a long table). Then Soesoe Zaw told us about some new constructions of strictly Deza graphs from the Berlekamp–van Lint–Seidel graph, using the operation of dual Seidel switching due to Willem Haemers. This pleases me, since I am typing this on a computer called Seidel.
The Berlekamp–van Lint–Seidel graph is a graph on 243 vertices which is dual (in the sense of Delsarte duality for association schemes) to the graph associated with the perfect ternary Golay code C of dimension 5 over the field of 3 elements. Take the dual code of C (which is 6-dimensional of length 11 and contains C as a subcode of codimension 1). The vertices of the graph are the cosets of this dual code; two vertices are joined if their difference contains a word of weight 1. It is a “sporadic” strongly regular graph with 243 vertices, and from it Soesoe was able to construct a strictly Deza graph on 243 vertices and two of them on 486 vertices.
Seidel’s name came up again in Wei-Hsuan Yu’s talk on equiangular lines, in which he began with the results which I saw from close-up in the early 1970s by Lemmens, Seidel, Higman, Taylor, Gerzon, and so on, and then gave some improvements, some of which have been obtained by semi-definite programming; and again in Alexander Gavrilyuk’s talk on digraphs whose Hermitian adjacency matrices have spectral radius at most 2.
One of the invited speakers was Gareth Jones. He was going to tell us about his recent theorem that many triangle groups contain uncountably many maximal nonparabolic subgroups (subgroups maximal with respect to containing no parabolic elements in their action on the hyperbolic plane). But for reasons not revealed, he was unable to come to the meeting. Instead, Alexander Mednykh had offered to give a talk to Gareth’s slides. Very brave, I thought. But Sasha began by explaining to us the basic idea behind the proof, a mix of maps and hypermaps, coverings, Riemann surfaces, etc.
Qing Xiang gave us new bounds for the size of a partial ovoid in either the generalised quadrangle E(5,q) (what I might call Ω−(6,q) and in the Ree–Tits generalised octagon; in each case, previous bounds were of order a power of q, but he and his co-authors have managed to lower the exponent of the power. He showed us Chris Godsil’s nice proof of Jef Thas’ q3−q2+q bound in the GQ case, based on association scheme techniques (and so potentially useable in much more general situations). The new bound uses modulo p techniques and very specific results about dimensions of modules for algebraic groups, and while much more powerful in this case is likely to be much more specialised.
There have been several mentions of Cayley graphs, and I must point out a notational trap. Given a subset S of a group G, not containing the identity, the Cayley (di)graph Cay(G,S) is the graph with vertex set G and with an arc from x to sx for every s in S. If S is inverse-closed, it is an undirected graph. It admits the action of G on itself by right multiplication (the right regular action) as automorphisms. In fact, any graph which admits G acting regularly as a group of automorphisms is necessarily a Cayley graph for G.
Now there are two, quite different, definitions of a normal Cayley graph:
The definition I learned first says that Cay(G,S) is a normal Cayley graph if S is a normal subset of G (closed under conjugation by elements of G); equivalently, the graph admits both the left and the right regular action of G as automorphisms.
The definition which seems to be standard among participants at this conference is: Cay(G,S) is a normal Cayley graph if G is a normal subgroup of the full automorphism group of the graph.
The first definition is very restrictive but also very useful. For two examples,
A graph invariant under the primitive group of simple diagonal type whose socle is the product of two copies of the simple group T is a normal Cayley graph for T.
For n > 3, Henson’s universal homogeneous Kn-free graph is not a normal Cayley graph for any group (though Greg Cherlin showed that it is a Cayley graph).
The second definition, by contrast, says essentially that a normal Cayley graph has no “unexpected” automorphisms: its automorphism group is contained in the holomorph of G. In accordance with the principle that graphs tend to have few automorphisms other than those you must have, we would expect that most Cayley graphs are normal; this has indeed been conjectured, with some evidence.
I wish that we had different words for these two obviously useful concepts. But it is probably too late for that now; one of them will just fade away.
The paragraph two above reminds me of an old theorem of mine, the citation for which was just imported from Scopus into the St Andrews research repository. For every finite group G, there is a constant α(G), between 0 and 1, so that, in the class of n-vertex graphs whose automorphism group contains a subgroup isomorphic to G, the proportion whose automorphism group is exactly G tends to the limit α(G) as n→∞. In accordance with the above principle, you might expect that most groups have α(G) = 1; but in fact this happens if and only if G is a direct product of symmetric groups, and the values of α are dense in the unit interval.
The idea of terminology fading away came up in Misha Muzychuk’s nice survey of coherent configurations for the summer school. As I have probably pointed out here before, at the end of the 1960s, within a couple of years of each other, Donald Higman invented coherent configurations, while Weisfeiler and Leman invented cellular algebras. The latter notation has faded away, partly because the term has been re-used with an entirely different meaning. But long before this, Bose and Nair invented association schemes, which are an important special case of coherent configurations. There are four levels of generality; in increasing generality, a coherent configuration may be symmetric, commutative, homogeneous, or none of the above. Bose and Nair used the term “association scheme” for symmetric c.c.; Delsarte used it for commutative c.c.; Bannai and Ito used it for homogeneous c.c., and this seems to have become standard. I prefer to use the term “coherent configuration” with appropriate qualification.
Unfortunately Misha did not have time to describe his recent construction, with Klin and Reichard, of proper Jordan schemes; but Mike Kagan will talk later in the meeting, and I think he might say something about this.

The Shackled Corpse: 1
It was an average Tuesday, Alexandrine was at the office with a cup of four hour ago coffee next to stack of articles about recent “discoveries” for her to sort through. A degree in Archaeology and here she was stuck behind a desk. She starts to work on this pile when her phones rings for what felt like the 300th time that day. Nonetheless she answered it with her usual blurb, “Office of Alexandrine Osa, what can i help you with today?”. This phone call was different than the others she had today. She hung up the phone and quite literally ran to her bosses office. “Sir! Sir! Are you aware of who just called my office?”. She informed him that she was asked to lead a team to an island recently discovered on solving a question the locals have reached out about. Alex and her boss when on for a while discussing if Alex was ready to lead a team. After about 3 hours worth of planning and question answering, she was given the okay to accept this task!
Alex ran to her desk and called them back and told them the plan. Her first real mission! It was her chance to show her boss that she’s ready for this much responsibility and that she wont disappoint him. After the call, she gather what she’d need and shut the lights off before locking the door for who knows how long.
When she made it back to her apartment, she shut the door and did what any grown adult would do: she jumped and skipped and sang and danced out of pure excitement. Oh but now she had to figure out what she’d need to bring. Well it’s an island so light clothing is a must but what if its cold at night oh a jacket then. Oh her mind raced as she tore apart her coset and dresser in an effort to find exactly what she needed. She settled for few pairs of shorts she had with as many short sleeved tees she could pack. She went to grab her old boots from the college days only to find them looking sad and broken...maybe it was time to upgrade them. She jumped onto her laptop and ordered the most beautiful work ready boots possible. This was really happening. She looked at her suitcase already packed and couldn’t help but smile and be proud of what she’s accomplished.
It was the next morning and she was getting ready to book her flight when hse heard a knock at the door. She approached the door and peaked through he peep hole and was shocked to find no one there but a package with her name on it. She opened the door and grabbed the box. She brought the box to the table and proceeded to open it. Inside was pre bought tickets, travel information, excavation tools (such as a pick and trowel), and one of those stereotypical “Indiana Jones” hats. She couldn’t believe that this was happening. She read the travel information and found she was leaving in the morning, someone was going to pick her up at 9AM  sharp. This was all happening so fast, she didn’t have time to nervous or second guess it. She was ready.
The rest of the day, she spent shopping for the necessities. Multiple pairs of sunglasses, about 30 pairs of socks, sunscreen (and more sunscreen), and chewing gum...just to name a few things. She bought another suitcase to bring all of her things with her. She made it back to her apartment, ordered some pizza, and called it an early night in preparation of the morning to come.

Dear CFRG Participants, My name is Léo Perrin, I am a post-doc in symmetric cryptography at Inria, and I would like to bring recent results of mine to your attention. They deal with the last two Russian standards in symmetric crypto, namely RFC 7801 (Kuznyechik, a block cipher) and RFC 6986 (Streebog, a hash function). My conclusion is that their designers purposefully used (and did not disclose) a very specific structure to build their S-box. The knowledge of this structure demands a renewed analysis of their algorithms in its light. While I do not have an attack at the moment, these results lead me to urge caution about using these algorithms. Let me summarize my results. Both algorithms use the same 8-bit S-box, pi, which is only specified via its lookup table. The designers never disclosed their rationale for their choice and never disclosed the structure they used. I have managed to identify what I claim to be the structure purposefully used by its designers to construct pi. The corresponding paper was accepted at ToSC and is already on eprint: [ https://eprint.iacr.org/2019/092 | https://eprint.iacr.org/2019/092 ] With my then colleagues from the university of Luxembourg, we previously found two different structures in this component and published them a couple years ago [1,2]. However, we were not satisfied with these results as the structures we found were bulky and just plain weird. The one I just found is much simpler and has both previous decompositions as side effects---in fact, we conjectured the existence of such a nicer structure in [2]. Much more importantly, this new decomposition highlights some very specific (and, in my opinion, worrying) properties of pi that were not known before. In a nutshell, pi is actually defined over the finite field GF(2^8) in such a way as to map multiplicative cosets of GF(2^4) to additive cosets of GF(2^4). Furthermore, the restriction of the permutation to each multiplicative coset is always the same. Also, the linear layer of Streebog---specified via a 64x64 binary matrix by its designers, including in RFC 6986---is in fact an 8x8 matrix defined over GF(2^8) using the same irreducible polynomial as in the S-box. Thus, at least in the case of Streebog, both the linear layer and the S-box interact in a highly structured way with two partitions of GF(2^8) and one of those is its partition into additive cosets of the subfield (this will be important later). This situation is unlike anything else in the literature. For example, while the inverse in GF(2^8) preserves the partition into multiplicative cosets of GF(2^8), the AES designers composed it with an affine mapping breaking the GF(2^8) structure. It is not the case here. On the other hand, Arnaud Bannier proved in his PhD (see also [3]) that an S-box preserving a partition of the space into additive cosets in such a way that it interacts with the linear layer was necessary to build some specific backdoors. Still, at the moment, I don't know of any attack leveraging my new decomposition as the partition in the input is the partition in multiplicative cosets (and not additive ones). Nevertheless, I can't think of a good reason for the designers of these algorithms to use this structure and, worse, to keep this fact secret; especially since the presence of such properties demands a specific analysis to ensure that the algorithms are safe. I felt I had to bring these results to the attention of the CFRG. If you have any questions I'd be happy to answer them! Best regards, /Léo Perrin [1] Alex Biryukov, Léo Perrin, Aleksei Udovenko. PUSH
So I got onto Tumblr half an hr ago to write this, but here I am now.
PUSH yesterday... I stressed out wayyy too much beforehand. I spent too much money too... I did not need bodysuits or the coset or all the stuff I got.  I ended up going with a bodyharness and some black shorts that looked wrap-y, and some boots with fishnets that were always falling down.
It was nice going with Andrey, and meeting Alana.  She was really odd in the beginning but I think it was because we were both shy, and she seems pretty reserved (like me, until she gets super drunk).
Drove there, already kind of drunk - had a drink, hung out with Alana, and met Joe, some more people, a couple (Alaina and her friend) who had scarification, and then I went to dance some. That was my whole night, mostly dancing... I got pretty crazy.
I kissed a girl for awhile, she was nice - I was afraid I was so dehydrated it was dry, but that was nice
Then JOe... dear god he came up to me at the bar and said I had a great butt, and I said thanks I’ve worked really hard for it! And then he asked if he could kiss it and I of course said yes... damn he knows how to kiss a butt. I think I kissed him afterward because it was really sensual, but I can’t stop thinking about it all of today.
I got on the table too, and danced, the guy also on the table had a rip off suit(?!) I witnessed that and it was amazing.
I had some great partners,
I whipped a girl on a St. Andrew’s cross
I smacked some guy’s ass, that was satisfying
I got tons of compliments on how “hot” I looked, or my outfit, and honestly it was great. I felt on top of the world and dancing is so much fun, I do it so rarely
It was way too fun. I was wayyy too drunk. And Andrey was really nice, I was running into him all night and he’d always give me a little hug or pat me
Woke up ridiculously hungover, and have been foggy-brained all day.  I think I burned close to 3,500 calories from dancing, ughhh but my digestion today is crazy horrible.
I want to tell A about all the fun I had, but I also don’t, maybe. I think I pushed him away too much.  Even when I was drunk I didn’t really feel like talking with him. I mean I did, but also knew it wouldn’t be really fun. Plus I was/am still really upset that he was so apathetic over Thanksgiving, and idk. It’s easy to text and say I love you, but harder to show it in person. He seems really different.
I loved hanging out with Andrey and his family. And all his friends. God - I’m still thinking of Joe kissing my butt. That actually... ugh. And he’s so cute, with his dreads, and how he’s not super skinny but actually adorable. Idk.
What am I doing

The village is just after the river area you swim through and plant explosives. 3: In the left tunnel after Reznov helps you move a barrier blocking the path to the next tunnel. After you lead the way, instead of going straight, go to the left and it is lying on the ground against a rock on the right-hand side of the tunnel.
Mission 8 Intel Locations
1: On a table with a lantern and files in the 2 story building you come across about halfway through the mission. There are two snowplows outside the entrance. 2: On a table next to a cabinet in the hangar with a rocket in it. In a room in the back right corner that to get to you need to pass through this hangar to continue the mission. 3. On a pallet that is almost completely covered in snow at the end of the ship. Right before the stairs to the right. You must grab this Intel before you use the rope to get off the ship and before time runs out.
Mission 7 Intel Locations
1: At the beginning of the level after you have interrogate Clarke. On a desk in the back right corner behind you. You must grab this Intel quickly before the gas kills you. 2: Lying on the ground in front of a shack with garbage all around. Just after you slide down the metal roofing, and the game goes into slow-motion so you can kill the enemies that appear. 3: On the metal roofing with garbage as you descend after Clarke gets shot in the head – just before the end of the level where you slide down plywood.
Mission 6 Intel Locations
1; On the table in the security room after you breach the room where Reznov is at. There is also a projector in the room. 2: In the building down the street from when you first used the radio to call in air support – it’s on a table that also has a TV on it.3: In the building on a table in the corner. The building is at the end of the mission where you have to defend the LZ. You have to get it before the enemy shows up.
Mission 5 Intel Locations
1: On the ammo crates in the back area where you are defending from being rushed by the enemy. You have to get it before following Woods. 2: In the bunker at the bottom left corner of the hill, sitting on the right side window. 3: After you save Woods, it on a shelf in the large bunker. After you pass the collapsed support beams and you have to get it before following Woods.
Mission 4 Intel Locations
1: On the 3rd floor of the Comm building on the right table that is underneath 4 televisions and the gold emblem. 2: In the far left corder of the control room for the rocket – after you blow a hole in the wall. 3: Inside a control room (a different one) underground on top of the radar computer below the window.
Mission 2 Intel Locations
1: On top of the cabinet on the 2nd floor of the 1st building you go in with Reznov after the prisoners take out the tower after moving along the train yard behind cover 2: In the armory on the table with some radios. The armory is the one just after Sergei is killed holding the security door open for you and the other prisoners. 3:In the building you start in after the cutscene from being gassed – on the bottom shelf of a rack near the back of the building.
Mission 15 Intel Locations
1: Just behind the first shipping container you come across, lying on the ground under the door. It is right before you need to use the Valkyrie Rockets to take out the two helicopters above you. 2: In the second room you enter when you are inside the ship under the table in front of you with a bunch of crates as you enter on the other side of it. This room is after the locker room. 3: In the office room at the end of the mission before you fight Dragovich, under the left desk with the phone. This office room is right next to the control room which is flooded on the lower level — the room you enter just after going up the stairs.
Mission 14 Intel Locations
1: On top of a vending machine in the first hallway to your left after you have broken out of the chair and stumble through the doors. 2: Inside the trash can to the right on the left side of the wall after you exit a room that triggers a long flashback cutscene. This is right after the first one for this mission. 3: On the desk to the left inside of the first office room you come across after you have a flashback with JFK as you head down the long hallway with the rocket taking off in the background.
Mission 13 Intel Locations
1: Lying on the ground next to the crate to your left as you exit the shipping container that you were hiding in. Kill the enemy in front of you then grab the Intel then move fast so you do not get spotted from the helicopter. 2: On the cage with a monkey in it inside of the containment unit in the center of the room. Do not shoot the enemy inside; instead knife him. If you shoot him, the containment unit will close, making it impossible to grab the Intel located inside of it. However, if you make this mistake, simply die, and start from the last checkpoint to try again. 3: It is shortly after you have put on the gas mask when the area gets gassed with Nova 6. You will first pass through one house, and then continue up the road to reach the next checkpoint. Before you go into the next house with the checkpoint, there is a house in front of it to the right that contains the Intel. It is sitting on the cabinet with a bunch of pots.
Mission 12 Intel Locations
1: On a shelf inside the large ammunition room you enter after going through the left or right tunnel when you escape. The intel iis on the right side of the room. You must grab this Intel before continuing and exiting the underground area with Woods. 2: On the table with a radio to the right of the tent when you exit the underground area. You must grab this Intel before getting in the helicopter with Woods. 3: Right after you have freed the POWs. It is on a crate in the area to the far left just before you reach the building where Kravchenko is inside on the second floor.
Mission 11 Intel Locations
1: The intel is where you breach the barracks with your squad the second time that you leave Blackbird. Down the steps to the left on the desk as you enter the barracks. 2: On a bench inside of the utility room located in the communications tower, on the second level, which is the level you enter the door from at the far left corner and right before you head down the stairs. 3: On a table with explosives in front of the office that is inside of the large warehouse with explosives everywhere else. You can grab this Intel before or after entering the office. However, it is easier to get it before entering since there is not any resistance.
Mission 10 Intel Locations
1: On a crate next to the barrels at the beginning of the mission, just before you get on the boat and after the helicopter. 2: Right after you get off the boat, it is lying on the right side of the dirt path in front of you next to a rock as you follow your squad towards your next objective. 3: On a rock just below the crashed plane. When you start to get down from the wing, it is right below you before you enter the plane.
Mission 1 Intel Locations
1: On the creat in the building after going up a hill and passing the weapons depot, then straight ahead with Woods and Bowman in front of you. 2: On the dresser in a bedroom that has a TV and a bed – just after killing the fake Castro. 3: On top of the ladder inside of the first hanger just after you repel down from the mountain to the airfield.

The geometry of diagonal groups
This is an interim report on ongoing work with Rosemary Bailey, Cheryl Praeger and Csaba Schneider. We have reached a point where we have a nice theorem, even though there is still a lot more to do before the project is finished.
Primitive permutation groups
This is an attempt to understand and characterise a class of permutation groups. So I begin with some reminders. We always assume that G is a permutation group on a set Ω, usually but not always assumed finite. We say that G is transitive if any point of Ω can be moved to any other by an element of G (in other words, G preserves no non-empty proper subset of Ω). We also say that G is primitive if it preserves no non-trivial equivalence relation on Ω (the trivial equivalence relations, equality and the “universal” relation with a single class, are preserved by any permutation group).
In the interests of full disclosure, I should point out that the only equivalence relations on a 2-element set are the trivial ones, so even the identity group of degree 2 is primitive according to this definition. This is usually excluded by adding to the definition the requirement that the group is transitive.
According to a simplified version of the O’Nan–Scott Theorem, there are four kinds of finite primitive group:
non-basic groups;
affine groups;
diagonal groups;
almost simple groups.
Almost simple groups are the ragbag here. The reason that the O’Nan–Scott Theorem is almost contemoraneous with Gorenstein’s announcement of the Classification of Finite Simple Groups is that, without CFSG, there is almost nothing we can say about this class, since all we know is that they lie between a non-abelian simple group and its automorphism group, and we have no information at all about the way they act except that it is primitive. For the other classes, the action is specified, and we are in a stronger position, as I will describe.
In the affine and non-basic cases, the groups are automorphism groups of well-known and well-studied geometric/combinatorial structures. The aim of the project is to understand the structures on which diagonal groups act.
Affine groups
These are groups of permutations of vector spaces which contain the translation group of the space as a normal subgroup, and are generated by this together with a group of linear transformations of the space. The maximal affine group (for any given vector space) takes the group of linear transformations to be the full general linear group on the space (all invertible linear transformations).
These groups preserve a well-known structure, the affine geometry on the vector space, whose points are the vectors, and whose subspaces are the cosets of the vector subspaces.
We may always assume that the field is a prime field (that is, the integers mod p for some prime p), by simply restricting scalars.
Non-basic groups and Cartesian lattices
Let A be an alphabet of size q, and let Ω be the set of all words of length n over A. The maximal non-basic group is generated by two kinds of transformation:
independent permutations on the letters in the ith coordinate of a word, for all i (these form the direct product of n copies of the symmetric group on the alphabet A);
permutations of the coordinates (these form the symmetric group of degree n).
The group generated is the wreath product of the symmetric groups of degree q and n.
What natural structure is preserved by this group? There are two possible answers.
A coding theorist would say, the Hamming graph, whose vertex set is the set of all words, in which two words are adjacent if they differ in just one position (that is, a single error will transform one into the other). So the distance of two vertices in the Hamming graph is the number of errors required to turn one into the other. The automorphism group of the Hamming graph is the wreath product just constructed.
We need a slightly different answer. For every subset I of {1,…,n}, define an equivalence relation ≡I on Ω as follows: two words are equivalent if they agree in all coordinates except those in I. The corresponding partitions PI of Ω form a sublattice of the partition lattice on Ω, and the map I → PI is an isomorphism from the Boolean lattice of subsets of {1,…,n} to this lattice just constructed, which we call a Cartesian lattice associated with A and n. Its automorphism group is again the wreath product of symmetric groups. Its dimension is n.
Two features of the Cartesian lattice should be noted.
The maximal proper partitions in the lattice (corresponding to the case where I = {1,…,n}\{i} for some i) form what Cheryl Praeger and Csaba Schneider call a Cartesian decomposition of Ω in their book Permutation Groups and Cartesian Decompositions. They generate the lattice by taking meets (infima).
The minimal proper partitions in the lattice correspond to the case where I contains just a single element. The parts of each minimal partition are maximal cliques in the Hamming graph. These minimal partitions also generate the lattice, by taking joins (suprema).
For n = 3, think of a cube; the maximal partitions are those into slices parallel to the faces of the cube (which we will call layers), while the minimal partitions are those into lines parallel to the edges.
Latin squares
A Latin square can be regarded as a square array of size q×q with entries from an alphabet of size q, so that each letter occurs once in each row and once in each column of the array.
Latin squares exist in great profusion. (The Cayley table of a group is a Latin square; but these form only a tiny fraction of the total.) The precise number (as function of q) is not known for q > 11; upper and lower bounds are known, both growing faster than the exponential of q2.
We need to interpret Latin squares a bit differently. Let Ω be the set of q2 cells. We have three partitions of Ω:
the partition R into rows;
the partition C into columns;
the partition L into letters (two cells in the same part if they contain the same letter).
These three partitions together with the partitions E (equality) and U (universal) form a sublattice of the partition lattice. For us, the crucial property is:
Any two of R,C,L, together with E and U, form a Cartesian lattice of dimension 2.
Latin cubes
Before plunging into the general case, I will describe Latin cubes; it turns out that the heart of our proof involves this case.
Here we have to face the fact that there are different definitions of Latin cubes. In all cases we have a q×q×q array of letters. I will use the term layer for a slice of the cube parallel to one of the faces (containing q2 cells), and line for the intersection of two non-parallel layers (containing q cells).
By far the commonest definition of Latin cube requires an alphabet of q letters, arranged so that each letter occurs once in each line. But this is not what we want. So I will call it a Latin cube of the first kind, and move on to the definition we do want.
A Latin cube of the second kind has an alphabet of q2 letters, arranged in the cube such that each layer contains each letter exactly once.
Another definition. A Latin cube of the second kind is regular if the sets of letters on two parallel lines are either equal or disjoint. Thus, for each parallel class of lines, the letters are partitioned into q sets of size q so that each line has the letters from one of these sets, and all q sets occur on the lines in a given layer.
This definition is from a paper of Preece, Pearce and Kerr. They do not attempt to classify these things, naturally enough: if Latin squares are wild, you might expect Latin cubes to be even wilder! But, surprisingly, it is not so.
Now let A be a group of order q. We can take the three coordinates of the cube as being elements of A. Take the set of q2 letters to consist of all triples [x,y,z] of group elements satisfying xyz = 1. In cell (a,b,c), put the triple [b−1c,c−1a,a−1b]. It is not too hard to see that this is a Latin cube of the second kind, and is regular.
Now here is our theorem about these:
Theorem Every regular Latin cube of the second kind comes by the above construction from a group, unique up to isomorphism.
As I said, this is the heart of the argument; the proof of it is the most complicated part of the whole thing, and I will not attempt to describe it here. Note that the group emerges naturally from the combinatorial structure.
Diagonal structures and groups
After that interlude, back to the main business. Let A be a group and m a positive integer. We take Ω = Am. Consider the following subgroups of Ω:
Ai, the ith coordinate subgroup (with the identity in all positions different from the ith), for i = 1,…,m;
A0, the diagonal subgroup consisting of the m-tuples with all entries equal.
Let Pi be the partition of Ω into right cosets of Ai, for i = 0,…,m.
We claim that any m of these m+1 partitions are the minimal non-trivial elements of a Cartesian lattice. This is clear for P1,…,Pm. For the others, note that we can swap P0 and P1, fixing the other partitions, by the map taking (a1,a2,…,am) to (a1−1,a1−1a2,…,a1−1am), and so we can permute the m+1 partitions arbitrarily.
The set-theoretic union of the Cartesian lattices generated by all these m-tuples of partitions is closed under join (but not meet), and so forms a join-semilattice. This is the diagonal semilattice.
The full diagonal group D(A,m) is the automorphism group of the (m+1)-set of partitions, or of the semilattice it generates. It contains (and is generated by)
the group Am, acting by right multiplication;
the diagonal group A0, acting by left multiplication;
automorphisms of A, acting simultaneously on all coordinates;
the symmetric group of degree m+1, permuting the partitions (generated by the symmetric group of degree m permuting the coordinate subgroups, and the transposition defined above swapping P0 and P1).
The main theorem
Now I can state the main theorem.
Theorem Let P0,…,Pm be partitions of Ω, for m ≥ 2. Suppose that any m of these partitions are the mimimal non-trivial elements of a Cartesian lattice on Ω.
If m = 2, then the three partitions, together with the two trivial partitions, form a Latin square, unique up to isotopy.
If m > 2, then there is a group A, unique up to isomorphism, such that the m+1 partitions are the minimal non-trivial elements in a diagonal semilattice for D(A,m).
This theorem has a similar structure to the Veblen–Young characterisation of projective spaces. In the low-dimensional case, the objects are “wild” (projective planes there, Latin squares here); in all higher dimensions, they are described by algebraic structures (skew fields there, groups here).
The proof is not so difficult from what we have already seen. For m = 2, the assertion is almost obvious. For m = 3, we have to match up the description of the Latin cube with that of the diagonal structure. Finally for m > 3, the proof is by induction.
Final note: The theorem makes sense in the infinite case (m is finite but the set Ω and the output group A are allowed to be infinite). We think our proof works for these as well. All this, of course, is subject to careful checking!
