Midsommar: A streetpunk review

The blood, gore and sexual creepiness is ripe in this Ari Aster directed bloodfest. This is the real deal friends and neighbours, it’s got everything: Crushed skulls, burning bears and a sex scene that makes you look at your morality, hold it in the light and then swiftly bury it to join the Catholic Church. Sign me up Father Bob. It’s that fun kids.

Warning: Spoilers XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

The story follows a group of drug taking PhD students studying the 90 year Midsummer festival of a Swedish cult. It follows our heroine Dani, who is probably the most unlucky girl of 2019: having her whole family snuffed out of existence in the creepiest murder suicide ever depicted on television and also for having to date the class A douche Christian. After witnessing a few strange rituals that include the suicide of the village elders and dumping period blood into a man’s drink to make him fall in love with someone (yes you read that correctly) Dani’s compatriots begin to disappear and eventually fall victim to a gruesome cult sacrifice which Dani eagerly views as she joins the cult in their merry debauchery.

This whole movie was on drugs. So many drugs. But like all things there are both pro’s and con’s to every masterpiece and that my friends is why I am here. It’s time to deconstruct this bad boy and look at what the great things are about this movie and what the sucky things are:

The Goodie:

· This movie is an absolute gore fest and I have to give props to whoever did the exploding head scenes in this one. We have truly come a long way since brain scanners. The gore is uncomfortably real and it makes you gag a little, which let’s be honest is what makes it fun.

· Aster was a master in this one and I have to admit (considering I haven’t seen much of his other work) I really enjoyed his very disorienting approach to filming this movie. Upside down camera’s, extreme lighting and the subliminal psychedelic swerve effects he uses during the drug scenes. It made me feel like I was tripping big ballsacks while watching the movie and it makes you question what you are seeing on a constant basis.

· Big props to our actress Florence Pugh for her extremely heartfelt and at sometimes scary performance of Dani Ardour. Damn I have to admit that even I was a bit choked up when she cried after her parent’s death. This my friends was no mere sad melodic weep and gasp that Hollywood has been feeding us for the last decade. This was a painful, guttural and expertly executed snot and tears bawl. Her panic stricken crying follows you through the entire film and it makes you relate to the character so much that you don’t want her to cry like that ever again. That ladies and germs is what I call acting.

· The Characters in this film were created to either command our love and adoration or to focus our intense and great hatred. Characters like Pele and Dani are positioned so well that you cannot help but root for them as they charge headlong into their roles, even considering that Pele is technically an Antagonist … meanwhile guys like Christian, Josh and Mark make me want to strip to my skivvies and kick baby seals. These trolls make you want to yell at the TV like an insane person. That’s what I call good characters.

The Baaaad:

· The movie can be very upsetting if you don’t have a history with horror films. So if you want to have a nice date night with your crush, I doubt that this will be the horror movie that drives her into your arms. I am a seasoned horror head and I was creeped out of my undies. Be warned.

· The gore, although very well executed, is very sparse. Daddy needs his fix you maniacs. I wish they had more of those insane gooey blood baths and hadn’t left us with only those two or three gore scenes. Although this is only my opinion.

The Verdict:

This movie is BADASS. I ABSOLUTELY LOVED IT. It’s bold, creepy and makes us fear the light more than the dark (which is completely new in the Horror Genre) I think everyone from seasoned veterans to newbies to the genre might find something to enjoy in this creep fest. I’d recommend it to anyone who wants a genuinely creepy , out of this world horror experience.
