151 --- Printing the future

Today I went into my suburb’s center. I have been printing more copies of my CV so I can give them to employers. Whilst inside the local print shop, I spoke to the owner and I was shocked to discover that the shop was closing down. Everything was 50% off.

This is a thirty-year old local business. I learnt from the owner that in the past, the store would photocopy thousands of papers. Now they are lucky to hit one hundred. Personal printers are easy to get, people are more likely to print at home for printing tasks. In a lot of cases, paper is not even needed due to the prevalence of digital technology. This is the downside to technological innovation and it is a shame to see it firsthand. I am very concerned that within 200 years, local businesses will cease to exist. Replaced by big business. With the rise of automation and artificial intelligence. There will be no need for people to work in stores. Drones can deliver things faster and possibly cheaper then a person can. Electricity will become cheaper than food. Cars can be repaired by robots, accountants and lawyers can all be contacted digitally (they will not be real people though). Entertainment centers and restaurants would stick around for a bit longer but there is definitely the potential for a future without physical stores. What I wonder, is if people will accept this future.
