In 1986, Cleveland witnessed an ambitious attempt to break a world record and create a spectacular event that would leave a mark in history. BalloonFest ’86, organized by the United Way of Greater Cleveland, aimed to launch 1.5 million helium-filled balloons into the sky. What was meant to be a colorful spectacle and a fundraising success turned into chaos, leaving a lasting legacy of unintended consequences.

— 𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐎𝐡𝐢𝐨, 𝐜.𝟏𝟖𝟔𝟔⁣ ⁣ This map of Ohio was created by The Major & Knapp Eng. Mfg. & Lith. Co. on behalf of the U.S. Department of Interior’s General Land Office. ⁣ ⁣ Dated October 2nd 1866, this map shows boundaries for the Ohio Company Purchase, designated Virginia Military Land, Symmes’s Purchase, Connecticut Reserve and Military Land. Additional text notes describe the natural resources found throughout different areas of the state. ⁣ ⁣ The Symmes Purchase (or Miami Purchase) refers to the tract of land that sits between the Great Miami and Little Miami Rivers. Named after John Cleves Symmes, a Congressman and lead investor for a group of land speculators, the purchase was originally meant to be 1,000,000 acres. It is said that due to a botched survey and mishandling of the sale that Congress reduced the proposed Symmes purchase to 311,682 acres. On September 30th, 1794, Symmes would ultimately receive a signed U.S. Patent Deed, signed by George Washington, for a total of 248,250 acres. ⁣ ⁣ ⁣ Visit the @CincyMapCollection website linked in bio for more historical maps of Ohio. ⁣ ⁣ #ohio #history #Symmes #township #cincinnati #hamiltoncounty #cincinnatihistory #ohiohistory #1866 #columbushistory #clevelandhistory #toledohistory #miamivalley https://www.instagram.com/p/B7y-RLEhhs6/?igshid=g378d68rgt43

Got this gem today. Probably means nothing to the non-NE Ohioans, but it takes me back to riding in the car with the windows down and the radio blaring. #clevelandhistory #wmms #memories #1980s #1970s https://www.instagram.com/p/Cb3FDp-rU8I/?utm_medium=tumblr

#Cleveland has a steep history in oil (those Rockefellers) and steel, among other things. This boat, the W. G. Mather has helped to ship both near and far. I grew up in C-town but I learned so much new info on the tour! #ClevelandHistory #ClevelandLove #FamilyReunion #BusTour #TourOfCleveland

Hinton & Sinupkin & Marshall. ⁣⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣⁣ During the time of this map’s publication in 1820 there were several interesting developments occurring within the newly formed states of Ohio and Indiana. ⁣⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣⁣ Ohio would have recently moved it’s capital to Columbus just four years earlier, after bouncing back-and-forth between Chillicothe and Zanesville for the first decade and a half of the state’s formation. ⁣⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣⁣ The capital of Indiana would have been Corydon, located only 8 miles off the Ohio River and home to several influential settlers of the territory at that time. Like Ohio, political forces and migration of settlers throughout the state created the need for a more centralized seat of government. Corydon, Indiana would proudly claim the state’s capital for another four years, until 1824, before it would be relocated to Indianapolis. ⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣ For more images of this map visit the @cincymapcollection website ⁣ ⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣ #cincymapcollection #Indianahistory #Ohiohistory⁣⁣ #cincinnatihistory #buckeyestate #hoosierhistory #clevelandhistory #queencityhistory #1820s #oldmaps #antiquemap https://www.instagram.com/p/Bxj_dcuF9c4/?igshid=j4vmmnyjjv1a

Circa 1880’s stereoview cabinet card photograph depicting Cleveland’s historic Public Square at Superior Ave. and the "Secesh Cannon." (Now located at Gray's Armory) This cannon may be the only surviving captured Confederate cannon in existence in any major northern city. Photographer: Moritz Liebich (1825-1888) Arthur K. Liebich (1834-1905) was an active photographer in Cleveland between 1874 and his death in 1905. The son of Moritz S. Libich (1825-1888) who was born in Germany and came to America in 1862. Moritz was a trained artist and he taught art for twelve years at the Jewish Orphan Asylum. Moritz was of the Jewish faith. Moritz and his son Arthur opened their studio on the corner of Ontario and Huron in 1876. In 1885 they added a branch studio on Broadway. In 1890 they moved their primary studio to a street called Euclid. Moritz was married to Alice Gerlach while in Germany and the couple had five children. Moritz’s son Arthur was born in Germany. Arthur came to Cleveland in 1863. He began his photography career working with William Case North and than joined his father’s studio eventually becoming partners with his father (1881-1888). Arthur was a major in the Spanish American War with the Cleveland regiment. In 1881 he married Alice Lacey of Aurora. . . . #ebaytreasure #vintagephotography #clevelandsettlement #clevelandhistory #sepiaphotography #Confederatecannon #publicsquare #secesh #civilwar #nostalgia
