clem just told me that eyes are, like, super duper important in Neil's lore, and I totally agree! Crowley always wears glasses (and has those serpent-like eyes), the Corinthian also wears glasses (and doesn't even have real eyes), and Coraline has those button eyes.
I'm not sure what to do with this info, but I think the whole "eyes horror theme" is just freaking brilliant overall. I mean, vision is, like, super crucial in the human experience (I think, even though you can technically live without it), so when an eye representation gets all twisted, it always gives off this eerie vibe. Sure, it's not a new concept or anything, since ancient Greek psychics were blind and all that jazz. But I just love it when Neil does it :)

For context: this story takes place 1000 years in the future, following a major nuclear war and restructuring of the entire world. the protagonist is a teenage boy who believes he is a messiah, sent to end a world war that is threatening to happen. (his portrait will be coming soon i promise!)
This is Contempt (but he also goes by like 3 other names ^^;;;), he's one of the three main villains of the story. Him and the protagonist were raised together in a lab as human experiments and see each other as brothers. The story starts with the protagonist discovering that Contempt has killed and beheaded their "mother," but he doesn't know why. Contempt is a very amoral and flirtatious character, whose main goal is revenge and power.
This is Alayna! She is from a futuristic sky city called Kennedy, where she became very proficient with technology and business. She is obsessed with a neural program that is one of the most popular past times in the world, and she's become a sort of celebrity, known worldwide for her knowledge and passion for it. Alayna can be off putting to people because she's very weird and comes across superficial, but she has a good heart and is very intelligent. Also you can't see them in this photo, but she has had a bunch of cosmetic surgeries including fake elf ears, fangs, and other things!
This is Jadoe. He was born as the prince of a country called Raynland, which used to be the most powerful in the world, but is now being annexed. He was taken as a prisoner of war for five years, during which time he became extremely close with the enemy prince and was eventually spared from being executed because of their relationship. Jadoe is kind of an asshole, but also he was tortured for five years so I don't really blame him.
Last but not least, this is Bristor. Bristor comes from a powerful family in the royal court of one of the oldest countries in the world, who specialize in torture and running the country's prisons. He decided to become a doctor and reject his family's livelihood, much to the anger of his family. He is deeply religious and obsessed with discovering the whereabouts of the messiah his religion promises. Bristor comes across stuck up and pompous because of his naivety and weird nobility etiquette, but he's actually a very kind hearted and compassionate person.

Horror is a lot of things, some of it's fun and just a little scary. Some of it is meant to disturb you.
Some horror is so deeply horrifying that you think about it for weeks. Some horror you forget after a couple minutes
The horror genre has a Lot of stuff in it. It's not a small thing. And there's a bunch of subgenres inside of it too.
Personally, I prefer horror where it's implied that something terrible is happening/has happened. Realistic horror, something that Could happen.
I have friends that prefer silly horror, it's comedy.
And I know people who prefer explicit horror, or fantasy-esque horror.
Are there lines to it? Yeah. But just bc there are certain lines doesn't mean that bc a certain type of horror isn't something you like it makes it inherently bad.
