most unrealistic thing in the show so far is the yennefer lady officer asking for datasets on missing imperial equipment from every occupied star system. you cannot have a decentralised administrative state while having standardised datasets that shit is gonna be impossible to read as a single cohesive document

algorithms seem to naturally push viewers towards right wing weirdness somehow. as such i’ve gone from interesting nature content to sustainable living and growing food to… ‘homesteading’ and stuff that is definitely almost a cult. anyways i find the idea i see with these people a lot that one must cut ties with ‘government support’ so strange. sorry to the weird progressive in speech but really genuinely a freak in practice who keeps showing up on my explore page, but i like it when i get like. electricity and medical care from the government. but yknow thats me maybe i’m the sheep

Years and years I have passed getting more and more frustrated at people saying "you can't have everyone being financially comfortable, who will clean the toilets who will work in factories who will be bin men who will do yucky stuff" and all it reveals is that THEY wouldn't do yucky stuff for the benefit of their community
Have you ever cleaned the bathroom in a house of multiple people? Congrats, you've shown how people will do yucky things for free to help others
Volunteer litter pickers EXIST and they exist fucking everywhere, you can't go far without finding a local Facebook group of people who meet up just to clear litter from their local community
Plenty of people would happily work in factories and warehouses, with reasonable hours and breaks and workers rights that support their wellbeing. I would love to do shit like that but I don't because I know I have a privileged enough background to make more money with better labour rights in different sectors
Attitude is not really the primary issue that we're facing in fighting capitalism. There's a lot of work to be done in breaking down institutional structures. But it's so fucking frustrating when people's attitudes act as a block to them being on board with something they consider idealistic

(Part 2) Global stocktaking marking the completion of the UN Decade of Sustainable Energy for All to further accelerate the implementation of SDG 7 of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development - General Assembly, Sustainability Week, 78th session.
Thematic Debate 2: Addressing energy's interlinkages and strengthening means of implementation and partnerships
Closing segment
Energy is an essential ingredient for getting the world on track towards meeting the SDGs and the objectives of the Paris Agreement on climate change. SDG 7, which calls for access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all, is inextricably linked to many other SDGs and its targets, including poverty eradication, food security, health, education, prosperity, gender equality, employment, transport, ocean, clean water and sanitation, as well as gender equality and the empowerment of women, youth and children.
The global stocktaking will bring together high-level representatives from Member States and other leaders from all regions. The meeting will be open to the United Nations system, ECOSOC-accredited non-governmental organizations, and other relevant stakeholders.
The goal of the global stocktaking is to review progress achieved at the end of the UN Decade of Sustainable Energy for All, 2014-2024, and to raise ambition and accelerate action towards attaining SDG 7 by catalyzing innovative solutions, investments and multi-stakeholder partnerships.

so: masking: good, unequivocally. please mask and please educate others on why they should mask to make the world safer for immune compromised people to participate in.
however: masking is not my policy focus and it shouldn't be yours, either. masking is a very good mitigation against droplet-born illnesses and a slightly less effective (but still very good) mitigation against airborne illnesses, but its place in the pyramid of mitigation demands is pretty low, for several reasons:
it's an individual mitigation, not a systemic one. the best mitigations to make public life more accessible affect everyone without distributing the majority of the effort among individuals (who may not be able to comply, may not have access to education on how to comply, or may be actively malicious).
it's a post-hoc mitigation, or to put it another way, it's a band-aid over the underlying problem. even if it was possible to enforce, universal masking still wouldn't address the underlying problem that it is dangerous for sick people and immune compromised people to be in the same public locations to begin with. this is a solvable problem! we have created the societal conditions for this problem!
here are my policy focuses:
upgraded air filtration and ventilation systems for all public buildings. appropriate ventilation should be just as bog-standard as appropriately clean running water. an indoor venue without a ventilation system capable of performing 5 complete air changes per hour should be like encountering a public restroom without any sinks or hand sanitizer stations whatsoever.
enforced paid sick leave for all employees until 3-5 days without symptoms. the vast majority of respiratory and food-borne illnesses circulate through industry sectors where employees come into work while experiencing symptoms. a taco bell worker should never be making food while experiencing strep throat symptoms, even without a strep diagnosis.
enforced virtual schooling options for sick students. the other vast majority of respiratory and food-borne illnesses circulate through schools. the proximity of so many kids and teenagers together indoors (with little to no proper ventilation and high levels of physical activity) means that if even one person comes to school sick, hundreds will be infected in the following few days. those students will most likely infect their parents as well. allowing students to complete all readings and coursework through sites like blackboard or compass while sick will cut down massively on disease transmission.
accessible testing for everyone. not just for COVID; if there's a test for any contagious illness capable of being performed outside of lab conditions, there should be a regulated option for performing that test at home (similar to COVID rapid tests). if a test can only be performed under lab conditions, there should be a government-subsidized program to provide free of charge testing to anyone who needs it, through urgent cares and pharmacies.
the last thing to note is that these things stack; upgraded ventilation systems in all public buildings mean that students and employees get sick less often to begin with, making it less burdensome for students and employees to be absent due to sickness, and making it more likely that sick individuals will choose to stay home themselves (since it's not so costly for them).
masking is great! keep masking! please use masking as a rhetorical "this is what we can do as individuals to make public life safer while we're pushing for drastic policy changes," and don't get complacent in either direction--don't assume that masking is all you need to do or an acceptable forever-solution, and equally, don't fall prey to thinking that pushing for policy change "makes up" for not masking in public. it's not a game with scores and sides; masking is a material thing you can do to help the individual people you interact with one by one, and policy changes are what's going to make the entirety of public life safer for all immune compromised people.

Power Trade Between Dhaka and Kathmandu Faces Delays, Expected to Commence After November
Despite an understanding among Bangladesh, Nepal and India, state-owned Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB) still cannot import electricity from the Himalayan nation. On August 28 this year, State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Nasrul Hamid said that import of hydropower from Nepal was almost final. It seems unlikely that the power trade will happen before November. That…

“Infrastructure is the backbone of economic growth. It improves access to basic services such as clean water and electricity, creates jobs and boosts business.” Alok Sharma
Today we heard the privatised, mainly foreigner owned, “English" water companies announce they want to invest £96 billion in water and sewage restructuring between now and 2030. New reservoirs, the first for over 30 years, will be built, leaks will be reduced and less sewage will be pumped into our waterways and seas.
Not before time!
But before we rejoice lets remember this. Since 1991 nearly £60 billion pounds of our money has been paid in dividends to mainly foreign shareholders.
“English water firms have handed £57 billion to shareholders in the 30 years after privatisation.”  (The London Economic: 28/10/21)
Put another way, we the English consumer have paid mainly foreign investors more than £2 billion per year to totally neglect our waterways. I stress the words “English consumer" because in Scotland things are very different.
“The Scottish system has remained under public ownership and Scottish Water has invested nearly 35% more per household in the system since 2002 than counterparts south of the border, while it charges 14% less for water. It is reported that the highest paid director of Scottish Water took home less than £400 000 in pay and benefits in 2021—a fraction of what his English counterparts receive."  (bmj.com: England’s privatised water: profits over people; 2022)
In England, the water company bosses gave themselves a 20% pay rise for the year 2021-22, pocketing £24.8 million, while raw sewage continued to be discharged into our waterways in ever increasing amounts.
Given the greed of the "English" water company CEO’s, the avarice of foreign shareholders, and the Conservative Party’s mantra – pubic sector bad – private sector good, then the fact that the new investment will be paid for by us the consumer, and not the companies themselves, should come as no surprise.
“Water companies want bills to increase by £156 a year by 2030 to pay for upgrades and reduce sewage discharges.”   (BBC News: 02/10/23)
So when Rishi Sunak tells us later this week  that he is the man for change and delivering long-term planning ask the question “What have all the other Conserservative  (and Labour) governments been doing for the last 40 years?
Do we really believe in fairy tales?

Towards greener shores: The need for an energy transition.
Tumblr media
The maritime sector stands at a pivotal moment, facing the daunting challenge of decarbonization while navigating economic and geopolitical headwinds.
Tumblr media
The industry’s greenhouse gas emissions, which account for 3% of the global total, have increased by 20% over the last decade. Without action, emissions could reach 130% of their 2008 levels by 2050.
Tumblr media
Complicating matters is an ageing world fleet. As of early 2023, the average ship’s age was 22.2 years. With over half now older than 15 years, many ships are either too old to retrofit or too young to scrap.
The urgency of decarbonization is evident, yet the sector faces multibillion-dollar investments amid uncertainty about the best transition methods.
Alternative fuels show promise, but their adoption remains in the early stages, with 98.8% of the fleet still sailing on fossil fuels. The silver lining is that 21% of vessels on order will operate on cleaner alternatives like liquefied natural gas, methanol and hybrid technologies.
Tumblr media
Another layer of complexity is the question of who is responsible for the transition. The major flag states Liberia, Panama, and the Marshall Islands, which account for a third of shipping's carbon emissions, will be responsible for enforcing new green shipping standards. But the onus for funding the energy shift falls on ship owners.
Tumblr media
Navigating this complex tangle of economic, regulatory and environmental priorities is the industry's next big test. Decisions on decarbonization measures are taken by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and its members.
Tumblr media
UNCTAD calls on
The industry to continually assess the viability of low-carbon shipping green technologies to identify the best energy transition pathways.
2Regulatory bodies to craft a global decarbonization framework that ensures equality for all ships to ensure a level playing field and avoid fragmentation in the industry.
3Shipping industry leaders to collaborate across sectors to increase demand for low-carbon fuels and technologies, encouraging investments.
Investors and financial institutions to substantially boost funds for the research and development of clean fuel shipping technologies and infrastructure.
