Day 6: A World to Revisit

Sora's taking it easy and telling some fantastical creatures about the Dreameaters he's met in their world.

I would love, love, love to revisit Fantasia in KH. Especially now with how well game engines can recreate physical art styles- such as Water colour. It'd look fantastic

I never played 3D when it came out (I was convinced it was a Re:com remake for some reason?) but when I did eventually play it and saw Symphony of Sorcery, I was just so excited to explore that world! I loved that Riku's level was based on the Nutcracker suit- it's more downlow and melancholic with its autumn-winter theme. And with a Bare Mountain boss fight with my favourite Chernabog!? great! And Sora's being based on the Pastoral Symphony makes so much sense since he's such a carefree guy!

I have only ever had to complaints... 1. Where's the Rite of Spring section? I want my retro 1940's dinosaurs! 2. It needed the residents. Unicorn, pegisi, Fawns... Maybe not the Centaurs, unless you use the ones from act II onwards. and maayyybbbee not Dionysus/Bacchus since we can't have Sora getting drunk off of God-brewed wine, now, can we.

That's why I want to go back; to see some cool retosaurs (although if I'm perfectly honest, everything before the 'dinosaur' section still kind of holds up today, surprisingly). I want Sora befriending some cute baby unicorns and flying alongside some cool pegisi.

i havent even watched legacy yet but that fucking kh world did some.. unexpected things to me

thinking about missing link, i really hope freya has a twin named freyr, to match how it goes in the mythology

i really like how much of bbs + it’s tragedy functions on how little each character knows about the other arcs and my favorite little example of this is the in universe disagreement on who actually killed eraqus. if you ask terra it was xehanort. if you ask xehanort he’ll say it was him but terra helped. yen sid decides to cause problems by telling aqua ‘it was xehanort…..and terra’ even though later in 3 he walks that back and says just xehanort. aqua hears what yen sid says as terra did it. poor ven is so miserable at that point he has no idea even though the reason terra did it at all is to protect him. if you ask ME. it was terra ❤️

tonight in what being a kh fan does to me: i grabbed screenshots of ava, luxu, master of masters, brain, and ephemer to scale for brain because it was easier than trying to remember if we see ava with brain

and then made sure all the avas were the same size so i knew they were all the right size relative to each other JUST TO MAKE SURE. just in case. with my own hands. that it was truly luxu talking to brain in that one scene and not MoM sneaking on by us because i genuinely am unsure how ppl can tell him and luxu apart in their black cloaks when they're not in the same room.

anyways yeah it was luxu which i expected bc i figured someone else wouldve realized by now if it was MoM, but.

I hope that in the future the KH series continues to branch out in its artstyle exploration and doesn’t only go for 3D games. There is beauty within the original theatrym inspired mobile game, gameboy chain of memories and the X/UX trilogy(back cover not included here for obvious reason. 

Original Chain of memories has faded into oblivion in a lot of ways after the release of recom. It probably survived a bit longer for less online European fans as the remake didn’t localized this side of the planet till 1.5. The portrait sprites are so expressive and it’s sad they were only brought back for the Kingdom Mobile minigames! The faces only being shown through them eliminates the engine/budget limitations KH1, recom and 2 had: character reverting to default faces mid cutscene and the difference clashing intensely.

People barely talk about Kingdom Hearts Mobile and the Avatar kingdom which remains the only kh game to not be connected to the overall story! The artstyle borrowed from theatrym and com but it was also the precursor of browser x[chi] with service ending shortly before the beginning of its successor’s beta and previews of the player being drawn in a very similar style. The arstyle even made a return with the melody of memory character loading walks!

The chi trilogy+Dark Road(as in browser x chi, Unchained and Union x) grew over time: characters got more unique animation such as the foretellers not having their own individual attack animation till the keyblade war battles, avatar parts were not separable at first and many fans rejoiced, we got to see background disney characters ignored by the main saga! Even a recurring character like Hades had memorable sprites both unique and fitting his character. Dark Road didn’t make any profit for over a year and its team was probably working with what was left from UX and whatever they could squeeze from Square Enix. IT CAME FREE! IT CAME FREE AND YET SO MUCH CARE WAS OUT BY THE STAFF AND THE ANIMATORS MAYU SHIMIZU AND MEGUMI YAMAMOTO! The amount of detail they seamed into the characters most of which had not much screentime made them feel real instead of just props for a scipt! It’s in a little dance, it’s in one character taking off their glasses to sleep and putting them back on upon waking up, it’s another raising their chin from a keyblade held at their throat! 

We can even talk Classic Kingdom which was introduced in KHUX before kh3!!!  As someone who used to play these simple static background with animated foreground, it was magical! As much as i love how it came free with UX and KH3, they would have made great merch accessible both to adults and a younger audience!

Kairi Ex i just want the serie never be afraid to explore different ways to bring their characters to life.
