Most destructive to the academy is going to be a hard fought title
Having decided it's time to leave, Mara is surprised by just how many beings have something to say about her departure. Perhaps she has left more of an impression than she thought.

Mara—no, Mara’s body—lay draped from the neck down in a plain white sheet on an examination table. Luke had steeled himself for something terrible, imagining her horribly disfigured or her features contorted; but she simply looked as if she were sleeping on her back, pale and peaceful, her red hair smoothly tidy in a way it never was when he watched her as she slept.
“It’s okay, Cilghal,” he said. “I don’t need to be alone with her.”
“Oh, yes, you do, Luke,” she said softly. “And I can come back later.”
“I don’t understand it,” he said. “But I get to hold her one last time, and I wondered if I ever would. I can’t tell you how grateful I am.”
He couldn’t see Cilghal’s face now. His eyes were hot and brimming. She patted his arm.
“You thought she would become discorporeal,” she said.
“We talked about it once or twice. I thought she might choose that when the time came. I’m glad she changed her mind.”
“She certainly made sure we had evidence.” Cilghal paused for a second, inhaled sharply, and started again. “It was poison, one I’ve never seen before. But don’t doubt that she also wanted you to be able to say good-bye.”
Cilghal turned and hurried out.
Luke couldn’t speak or even look away from Mara, and he spent a long time staring into her face. If her eyes had opened, and she’d asked how long she’d overslept, he wouldn’t have been surprised. He lifted the sheet to clasp her left hand, and it was just the chill that made him flinch.

New Jedi Order, Part I:
How much can you change existing characters before they become ocs?
Either way, just some notes on SDTCI New Jedi Order members:
Luke Skywalker: Lichtenberg scars criss cross his body, Sidious’ parting gift. Very good at energy deflection to keep this from happening again. Heavy, brutal fighter, most resembling Form V. Personally mentors Kyp Durron, Grogu, and Tahiri Veila. Professional tax evader.
Mara Jade: Actually ran away from the Empire at 16 here, joined with Talon soon after. Otherwise mostly unchanged, but gave Anakin’s lightsaber back to him, and built another purple one. Mentors Jaina Solo. Helps Luke evade taxes.
Ezra Bridger: Beard, 6’3, robotic right leg, blaster saber, fighting style ends up resembling a mix of Forms II and III. Takes Pypey, Barratk’l, and later Jacen Solo as padawans.
Kyle Katarn: Would be played by Karl Urban in live action. Yellow saber, preference for forms V & VI. Takes on several OCs as padawans, and the Order’s main combat instructor besides that.
Kam Solusar: Would be portrayed by Michael B Jordan. Pink lightsaber, a little concerned about possible connections to the darkside. Definite malewife.
Tionne Solusar: Much more alien, alabaster skin with teal body markings, sharp teeth & pointy ears. Dyes her hair & wears very bright clothing. Tall lady. Order’s main archivist, expert with any stringed instrument.
Corran Horn: Not much changes with him. In competition with Anakin to determine who the Order’s greatest pilot is.
Cal Kestis: Mirialian, played Sima Liu. Lightsaber personally offends Kyle, Mara & Obi Wan. Gets his revenge by teaching Ben Skywalker, who adopts the same style. Another definite malewife.
Merrin: Nightsister, cool goth aunt to the younger jedi. Doesn’t usually fight with a lightsaber, good with Jar’Kai regardless. Teaches survival and illusions, as well as offering alternative views on the Force.
Cilghal: Order’s main healer, and with an...interesting love of dead things. Serene, but snark is on point. Will happily heal any stupid injury you present her, but will openly laugh at you. The other Form II master in the order, people are jealous of her silver Lightsaber.
Kirana Ti: Met Luke during SDTCI’s equivalent to the Courtship of Princess Leia (but much different, such as taking place in 3 ABY, and not including Han), one of his oldest students, and the person Luke will say is his best friend in the Order after Mara (Ezra’s jealous). Trained in lightsabers by Ahsoka, and of course teaches Tenel Ka. Surprisingly very chill, and married to the Order’s third malewife, Raider.
Streen: Ex gas miner, jumpy, and very nervous around the Pre-Purge Jedi of the order. Actually connects with Cal, and ends up as one of the Order’s premier therapists/mind healers.
Leia Organa: Honorary member of the Order, mostly just shows up to beat the living stuffing out of anyone who accepts her open challenge, but does end up teaching Saba Sebatyne. The reason Luke evades taxes (Imagine paying taxes to your sister! Luke, I get that, but I don’t want to get arrested!)
Korto Vos: Not really a member, just a force sensitive who shows up occasionally and usually deposits a new student on their doorstep, or leaves some pertinent info on Luke’s desk. Only makes Batman entrances and exits (This building is full of nosy force-sensitives, how does he do that?!)

here, have the start of the next story in that one series I wrote two years ago, about what would have happened, if ahsoka tano thought to ask maul who his sith master is.
in which time has passed, old wounds are healed if still tender, and there is a new generation to shepherd and nurture.
Ahsoka meets Cilghal for the first time when Obi-Wan volunteers her to lead a group of younglings to Ilum with Master Windu.  Normally, the Temple respects her status as a Ranger too much to snatch her up for missions during those periods she’s on Coruscant to rest, but somehow, this time was different.
She has to jog through the hangar to catch the Crucible in time, which she also doesn’t appreciate.  Force, she didn’t even manage a real shower, just a quick run through the sonic in her quarters, which means her montrals are a touch out of sync with the rest of her; it’s not quite a headache, but it makes her…cranky.
That’s something she can admit to herself, if not Master Windu, who eyes her when she sheds momentum by nearly sliding up the ramp into the ship, projecting faint irritation in the Force.
Catching his gaze calmly, she pulls her emotions back behind her shields and gives a faint bow.  “Master Windu, it’s nice to see you again.”
“And you, Knight Tano,” he returns, and they walk deeper inside together, the younglings already scattered to set up their bunks in the berth.
It’s been a while since they’ve spoken at any length; most of their interactions are consigned to polite acknowledgement as they pass one another in the halls of the Temple.  Ahsoka honestly wouldn’t put it past Obi-Wan to be forcing them to finally get over themselves, after all these years.  They don’t dislike each other, it’s not that.  But there’s a hum-thrumming of sensitivity itching under her skin whenever they spend too much time together, force-memory of a shatterpoint shared and echoes of tortured laughter cut brutally short.  That’s something she’s spent the last eight years trying to put down.
Though on rare occasions, that edge of a reminder at the back of her head makes for a spectacular spar between them in the salles, and their last bout drew what felt like half the Temple before it was over.  Her musing actually pulls that particular clash out of both of them and into the surrounding Force, and they both soften at once.
Just in time for a little Rodian youngling to dash into the room across from them, chanting, “Knight Tano!  Knight Tano!  Padawan Katooni said when you took her to Ilum you were kidnapped by pirates is that true?  Are we going to be kidnapped by pirates?”
She gets a blinding flash all her own of Ganodi pouting in disbelief at the idea of learning from a droid, but before she can even smile, a chorus of half a dozen other younglings gasp, “Pirates?” and practically stampede into the room in the wake of their fellow.
Mace audibly sighs, and Ahsoka’s not-quite-a-headache has definitely solidified.
But she spends the next hour or so recanting the frankly ridiculous series of events that followed her last trip to Ilum, including being attacked by pirates, being kidnapped by pirates, the worst circus acts she’s ever seen in her life, teaming up with those same pirates, and a brief and terrifying battle with General Grievous.
Fucking Hondo.
By the end of it, she has all their attention wrapped around her like a cloak, wide eyes following her hands and, in some instances, seeing what she saw through the Force.  A few of them definitely have a talent for clairvoyance, if not outright precognition, which will make this trip interesting, to say the least.  Ilum is strong in the unifying Force.  She does her best to tuck the sheer desperation of that final duel away as she tells it because it’s just another fun story, for them.  Jedi, fighting the forces of evil!  The ups and downs of battle are exhilarating, not horrifying, because they still know in their hearts a Jedi can do anything they set their mind to.
Creating a lightsaber is a sacred process, one that unites every Jedi.  These younglings will remember one another for the rest of their lives, remember the feeling of each other in the Force every time they held the physical manifestation of their lives in their hands.
All the crechémates Ahsoka built her first lightsaber with are dead.
aaaaand that's as far as I got, back in 2021. Cilghal is a real star wars character, a healer-knight from the days of the new jedi order. i figured bariss and ahsoka probably ended up sharing a padawan, given the ending scene of Had we but World enough, and Time.

Luke/mara fic rec list
These are some of the best mara/luke fics I've read - feel free to add more in rb/comments!
Repair by BananasAreForParties - Graphic Depictions of violence, fluff and angst, whump. 20k complete. Mara Jade came to Aran to trade. She acquires nutcakes, Imperials, and one Luke Skywalker, condition: damaged. Hurt/Comfort fic.
Reccer's note: Their awkward but geniune flirting in this is so cute
Rapunzel, Rapunzel, You Aren’t Even Stuck In Your Tower by PrinceJakeFireCake - fluff, secret identity, 6k complete. Mara Jade, an ex-spy for the dragon, Emperor Palpatine, now a knight of Princess Leia Organa, is on a mission to rescue the princess’ twin brother from the tower he was locked in.
A.K.A.
Someone had to write Luke as Rapunzel and I am someone
Limpet AU series by frodogenic - humor, family fluff, 89k complete. Newly returned from the Unknown Regions with Darth Vader, Admiral Piett doesn't expect much of a welcome from the New Republic. And not in a million lifetimes would he have predicted that their very first guest would be Luke Skywalker. After all, Skywalker and Vader are still mortal enemies...right?
Reccer's Note: this series is so good, like, insanely good. I keep rereading it.
Take My Breath Away by atamascolily - hanahaki disease, 1k complete. Luke collapses during a sparring session, coughing up blood--and flowers? A concerned Mara drags him to Cilghal for medical treatment, but the answers aren't what either of them expected.
Catch and Release by frangipani - rated E, sexual experimentation, 10k complete. So let me get this straight," Mara says."You decided that to entertain yourself while I'm offplanet you're going to get licensed to pilot a Mon Cal cruiser?"
He frowns. "You say it like it’s ridiculous.”
"Those ships aren't even made for human pilo--" She narrows her eyes. "Oh no, it's the challenge thing, isn’t it?"
Or the one where Luke and Mara try to bang while keeping Luke's pulse within a specific range. Absolutely 0 science knowledge went into this. Consider yourself warned.
Who Needs a Cover Anyway? by JediDryad - misunderstandings, jealousy, 1k complete. Against his better judgment, Luke agrees to act as "Jedi Ambassador" on a mission with Mara and Lando. Will he be able to keep his feelings to himself or will observing their relationship be too much?
Miscommunications by JediDryad - misunderstandings, 849 words complete. Luke sends Mara a nervous rambling message inviting her for a visit. What she receives is something quite different.
Family Planning for the Force-Sensitive by beautifultoastdream - domestic, fluff, 13k complete. Two years after Exar Kun is defeated, Mara Jade and Luke Skywalker are married. Mara is uneasily settling into life as a Jedi trainee and as the New Republic's representative to the Smugglers' Alliance. But when Karrde's vornskrs have a strange reaction to her during a routine meeting, Mara learns that something else is about to happen ... And it scares her more than C'baoth.
Slight AU from Star Wars Legends, fluff and angst.
The Trouble with Bootie Comms by frangipani - 3k complete. "I have an issue with my apartment right now," Luke said. Mara was pretty sure why.
Luminous Creatures by celinamarniss - daemons, action/adventure, enemies to friends to lovers, 30k complete. Mara has never been prouder when Asyr settles early. He shifts into the form of a night felinx when Mara is thirteen, a whole year early. It’s a good body for stealth, her trainers tell her, and praise them for it.
Luke is the last of his friends to have his dæmon settle. Speculation drifts through his childhood. What sort of animal do you think your dæmon will choose? asked by adults with indulgent smiles and between children as their dæmons flit from form to from in impromptu races across the desert sand.
Strange Bedfellows series by celinamarniss - action/adventure, humor, light angst, 37k complete.
Reccer's Note: this series has a very domestic couple feel to it and I love that.
Under the cover of Darkness by randomlyimagine - time travel, fix-it, 57k complete...ish. (there's a sequel that is tbc.) Being pulled back through in time, getting to see the Old Jedi Order, Ben, even Anakin Skywalker, before he Fell…it was an opportunity Luke had never dreamed he’d have.
If only he and Mara hadn’t been pulled back in the middle of a mission where they were undercover as Sith.
slipping into the ground or into your arms by BananasAreForParties - rated E. Fluff and angst, mutual pining, implied/referenced child abuse, 41k complete. More than colleagues. Less than friends. Better than acquaintances. They remain in balance. The Command, the dark whisper, slumbers and Mara has no desire to poke a sleeping rancor. To dance with Skywalker. . .could it ever be worth the risk?
Mara and Luke succumb to the gradual formation of their Force bond through an activity far more pleasing than fighting for their lives.
the history books forgot about us by celinamarniss - happy AU, 2k complete. Jedi apprentice Asha is sent on a quest to find the legendary Luke Skywalker. She thought he was a myth!
better tell 'em while they're here by philthestone - 4k complete. Jacen discovers a Fish in the new fountain just outside of the Old Palace's reception hall, which obviously means that the Imps are planning to take over the galaxy. Jaina thinks that everything would be alright if only Nik could remember where he put his pants.
And of course, Uncle Luke's getting married today.
(AU for the EU)
Reccer's note: recommend reading the whole series. This fic has such a human warm fuzziness to it.
Boundaries series by frangipani - rated E, smut, 106k complete. A year after the events of the Last Command, Mara is still in Coruscant attempting to fulfill her Smuggler's Alliance duties while continuing her Jedi training. Former Emperor's Hand, turned smuggler, government liaison, and Jedi apprentice...she's long known that the only way things work in the new life she's made for herself is through clearly delineated boundaries.
It's really too bad Luke Skywalker unwittingly keeps taking them apart.
The Son of Suns trilogy by blank101 (link to each installment: Into the Storm, in shadows and darkness, at the Brink of the dawn and the darkness) - graphic depictions of torture, psychological torture, sith!Luke. 721k complete. Darth Vader captures the passengers of the Millennium Falcon after their attempted escape at Cloud City, sure that Luke will convert to his cause and aid him in overthrowing the Emperor. When his plan is rebuffed he falls back on more desperate measures and hands his son over to Palpatine, who begins to systematically take apart Luke’s life to create a new Sith, turning him against his allies, his father and his beliefs with devastating consequences for both the Empire and the Alliance, as events cascade beyond anyone's control.
This is a completed trilogy, featuring Luke Skywalker, Darth Vader, Palpatine, Han Solo, Leia Organa, Mara Jade, Mon Mothma, and Crix Madine.
Reccer's note: I really love this one - both for the sith!Luke portrayal, and the conflicts luke and Mara go through.
Drive You Mild by obaona - sith!Luke, drama/romance, 70k complete. How do two powerful, individualistic people who were formerly enemies unite? Emperor Luke Skywalker, meet Jedi Knight Mara Jade.
Misc - archive sites/author recommendations
Mara and luke archives

The Jedi tradition of the taras-chi, named after a foul-smelling insect from Kessel, means that during a meeting of the Council, they'll appoint someone whose specific job it is to make an argument that runs against the conventional wisdom, so as to make a more thorough test of the idea being considered.
It originated as an idea Kyp pulled out of his ass to cover up a division in the Order in a meeting with Omas and Niathal. And Luke apparently thought that was a good idea, because he just uses it at the next Council meeting. Doesn't even explain what it means until Cilghal's like, "you're nominating me for what?" And Kyp spends that whole exchange desperately not laughing.
I mean, I agree that it's a good idea But I think it's so funny that a Jedi tradition came into being this way.
Also how Corran recognizes the name and spends like half that meeting just sitting there in silence until he's addressed directly, at which point he's like "Isn't that some kind of bug from Kessel?" and Kyp facepalms and Mara just gives Corran a Look.

Stupidly long excerpt from the random AU I’m not writing. (Other bits here and here. More blurbs to follow this Wed and Fri)
It had quietly been public knowledge since that the list of Masters who would be allowed to take Mara as a Padawan was painfully short. No one talked about what must have happened to her in the year she’d been missing, but no one had any illusions about the level of damage she had sustained.
Luke had been ecstatic to hear she’d been found, confused when he’d learned that the Emperor had taken her, and outraged when he wasn’t allowed to see her. He’d made it two days before managing to sneak down to the Halls of Healing after hours. The others had helped cover for him, and he’d made it all the way to Mara’s room before being caught.
“But Knight Bilabba,” he’d wheedled, giving her his very best pleading look. “Mara’s my friend and it’s been forever! I can be quiet,” he offered. “Please!”
Deppa’s expression had been stern but her eyes had been soft. “I’m sure you can, young Skywalker,” she’d said, not unkindly. “But Mara has been very hurt.”
“I know.” Luke’s voice was small. “But she’s gonna be okay, right?”
“You should go back upstairs.”
Luke’s head snapped around at the sound of Mara’s voice. It was low and hoarse, like Leia’s had been when she got laryngitis. He still couldn’t see her around Deppa, though.
“You don’t want me to visit?” Luke asked, equal parts concerned and scared. Mara had always wanted to see him, to be included in things.
“The Emperor took me,” Mara’s voice came back. “Everyone’s going to think I’m a Sith now. It won’t be good for you. To be seen with me.”
Luke’s eyes went round and his face went red with righteous fury. “That’s not true! Ezra’d have come except he’s covering for me!” Wincing a little, he shot a glance at Deppa.
The Jedi rolled her eyes slightly, but Luke felt something almost like a nudge of encouragement from her.
“Leia wanted to come too,” he barreled on, hopefully. “Except that she had some dumb party she had to go to with the senator.” Digging in his pocket, he added, “And I brought you cookies! The ginger ones you like!”
A wash of longing escaped and Luke used it as an excuse to dart past Deppa and into the room. Mara was standing just inside the door with her back to the wall. Her hair had been cropped short, barely reaching her chin, and her sleeveless tunic left her arms bare, revealing a mass of fading bruises and a web of fine white scars.
She and Luke both froze when they caught sight of each other. Mara started to crumple in on herself, horrible feelings that Luke didn’t have names for swirling around her as if they’d eat her like a monster out of one of Luke’s storybooks.
Luke didn’t know what to do, but the idea of his friend being eaten — being taken away again— terrified him and roused a fierce rebellion. Darting over, he threw his arms around her. Squeezing his eyes shut tight, he thought hot, bright thoughts — sunshine gleaming though Temple windows, hot sand on the beaches of Naboo, splashing in the wave pool with Cilghal and Ezra and the others.
Mara made a small, cracked sound and then her hands were fisting in his tunic, her face pressing into his neck.
“Luke,” she whispered, the word broken and wet.
Her sadness and anger washed over him like a wave — memories of a cold metal room, of being curled up in corner angry that it was his life day and she wasn’t there to give him the present she’d been working on before she got taken. Blurry memories of pain during what she knew was the Festival of Lights and despair that she wasn’t there to light any. Bleak curiosity if anyone would light a candle for her. Did they know she was alive? Had the Emperor convinced them she was dead?

“Neutralize.” Luke frowned. He circled Kyp, trying to put him in the middle of their three-way exchange, but Cilghal paced him so that Luke remained in the center. “Meaning ‘kill.’”
Kyp nodded, not repentant. “This isn’t a mission of assassination, Luke. But if the capture isn’t clean, if the choice is to run away and leave him in charge of the Alliance or finish him then and there…”

→ @skyhaunter said: who did this to you ?
He thanked the control over his emotions and his body that he had gained over the last year as he refrained from pulling his hand away from his grandfather's view. It would have given him away — what are you afraid of? You've got nothing to hide, do you? He forced himself to smile, to ignore the conflicting emotions flaring up in him and doing his best to remember what Vergere had taught him about CONTROL. " Oh it is nothing. Just a consequence of messing around on Coruscant for a year. Burned myself trying to open the door to mum and dad's old apartment, or what was left of it. Should have known I'd mess it up, Jaina was always better at these things than I am. " Why did he feel like he needed to LIE about the scars on his hands? His grandfather of all people would likely be able to tell exactly what had caused the burned pattern on his hands, maybe he would even be able to tell they were self inflicted.
His loss of control during his confrontation with Nom Anor in the depths of Coruscant had been his greatest shame. He had used the force with the intent to kill, with the DESIRE to make the Vong pay for what they had done to him and his home. It had been so easy to reach out into the dark and let it flow through him — it had been so freeing. Years of strict control and restraint, months of pain and emotional chaos gone in an instant. But the realisation of what he had done had brought all of these things back upon him with twice as much weight as before. Vergere had forced him to take responsibility for his actions, to acknowledge he had given in to something dark that had always resided WITHIN him. It was his duty now to never let it escape again. So when his grandfather asked him about something so dreadful, he could not answer.
" Don't worry about it, I know I must look like a Rancor's chew toy but none of it hurts anymore. Master Cilghal had a look at everything when I came back. She said everything's fine, she just can't do anything about the scars because its been too long. I don't mind though. I've had enough time to get USED to them. "

“To put it mildly,” Jaina said. “I’ll never forget how that blood hunger came over me the first time Tesar saw a rallop.”
“Or how twisted inside this one felt when Alema wanted to nest with that Rodian rope-wrestler.” Tesar fluttered his scales, then added, “It was a week before he could hunt again.”
Alema smiled at the memory, then said, “Nesting wasn’t what I had in mind.”
Lowbacca banged his bowl down on the bench next to him, groaning in distaste and weary resignation. After the war, Jaina and the other strike team members had begun to notice unexplained mood swings whenever they were together. It had taken Cilghal only a few days to diagnose the problem as a delayed reaction to the Jedi battle-meld. Their prolonged use of it on the Myrkr mission had weakened the boundaries among their minds, with the result that now their emotions tended to fill the Force and blur together whenever they were close to each other.

Cilghal being a healer and also being able to sense death as her most natural abilities is so terrifying. The healer comes in, she points at you, and all the other healers and medics at your side have suddenly abandoned you. On to the next most severe patient. She tells you she's sorry as she walks by. You know she means it but you're gone before you can tell her so.

Scandal of the Century (WIP 2)
[The changes are mostly additions to the scene I wasn't finished with in the last version, and I did manage to work some of my thoughts about Jaina and Tahiri into an actual fic for the first time.]
“Do they have any clue about me?” Zekk asked.
Jaina and Jag considered their mutual fiancee's question as Javis Tyrr's holonews footage revealing the two's relationship played on the viewscreen in front of them.
“I don't think so,” Jaina admitted.
“I haven't seen any evidence of it,” Jag agreed after a second. “And we would have.”
The grins that crossed Jaina and Zekk's faces told Jag that whatever they were plotting over their unusually strong bond could be nothing but mischief. That didn't necessarily mean it was a bad idea, but one of them had to be reasonable, and that was usually Jag.
”All right,“ he sighed, ”let's hear it.“
”Since the nexu's already halfway out of the cage,“ Jaina said, her mischievous smirk widening, ”I think we should have a little fun with it.“
As much as she would have wanted to see the looks on the Masters' faces, the three of them did feel that Jaina and Zekk's duty as Jedi obligated them to let the Council in on it.
”It would help draw media attention away from the Order,“ Kyle Katarn said contemplatively.
“Which we desperately need,” Cilghal agreed.
Acting Grand Master Kenth Hamner pressed a hand to his forehead and sighed in exhausted exasperation. He said nothing, and they all knew that a specific direct order would be the only way to stop Jaina and Zekk from carrying out their scheme.
Kyp had been grinning in anticipation ever since he heard the proposal. ”I can't wait to see the look on Daala's face when you finish with this.”
“You could start a whole new Imperial custom,” Jaina joked, making fun of Jag for accidentally shooting his deputy minister in the foot as he foiled the recent assassination attempt. Zekk grinned as the playful banter went on.
Not for the first time, Zekk thanked the Force for how much both of his lovers had healed in the last few years, since those days off on Kashyyyk when they had all collectively realized how they truly felt about each other, after Jag had had to deliberately set himself up for Jaina to deliberately almost kill him in order to get through to her about how much of herself she was losing to her fixation on her training.
“So, your imperial majesty,” he asked Jag playfully, “does Conspiracy: A Methodology offer any advice on the best time to start our little scheme?”
Jag hummed in consideration. “If I ever get my hands on a copy, I'll let you know.”
———
The viewscreen wall displaying an image of Alderaan blew out, and an assassin entered, followed by two YVH droids. Jaina, Zekk, Leia, Han and Jag felled the attackers before the Pangalactus security personnel even entered the room. But then they were standing amidst the wreckage, and Jag was on the receiving end of a fusillade of profuse apologies.
And Jaina shot Zekk a grin. Now? she asked over their bond.
Now, he agreed.
Conveniently standing behind Jag, but in full view of the other observers, the two pulled into a passionate kiss.
———
”Well,“ Lecersen remarked after a moment of stunned silence. “I didn't see that coming.”
”No way,” Treen laughed as the conspirators observed the immediate fallout of the expected failure. ”This is too perfect.“
Lecersen smiled and began drafting the holonews article, with the scandalous capture as the cover image.
———
Over their mercifully uninterrupted second attempt at that night's dinner, Jaina didn't even notice that her ADHD meds were starting to wear off, because she was so hyperfocused on her anticipation.
She found what she was looking for even faster than she'd expected to.
The rest of the conversation, whatever it was, stopped in its tracks as she collapsed into helpless laughter, dropping the datapad on the table.
”Oh, this has gotta be good,“ Han remarked in anticipation.
Tahiri, who had joined them on the way back from Pangalactus, was quicker than Zekk in snatching the datapad from the table.
“'Jedi Cheating Scandal!'“ Jaina's sister read excitedly, raising her voice to be heard over Jaina's cackling. ”'The revelation of Head of State Jagged Fel's relationship with Jedi Knight Jaina Solo has drawn plenty of criticism from many, particularly Fel's detractors among the Imperial Remnant.'”
Tahiri paused for a moment as Jaina finally managed to get a grip, but the ”Galactic Empire“ correction didn't come because Jag had food in his mouth.
”'But it appears the situation may be even more complicated than anyone had realized,'“ Tahiri continued. ”'Mere hours ago, Head of State Fel was dining at the Pangalactus restaurant with his girlfriend, her parents, and fellow Jedi Knight Zekk, when an assassin blasted through a wall and attempted to kill Fel, followed by two YVH combat droids that attempted to kill the Organa-Solos in an apparently unrelated attack.
”'As the local security personnel arrived and conversed with Fel, Jedi Solo and Jedi Zekk kissed each other in full view of the holocams.'”
Tahiri paused for a moment, staring at the datapad incredulously, before continuing. “'Historically, Jedi Solo is not known for subtle approaches to problems, so it is quite a shock that she could keep a man as observant as Fel in the dark about a secret affair.
“'If Head of State Fel has not already heard of this story, he undoubtedly will soon. We wish him the best.'”
“And so,” Tahiri concluded dramatically, ”the Trickster works her magic again.“
”Kriff off, Ri.“ Jaina's smile belied the halfhearted eyeroll with which she habitually reacted to her sister's references to the act of deception that had long since become a running joke between them.
The nickname Ri was the syllable shared in the names from both of the personalities who had merged to form the individual who was called Tahiri today, and might or might not choose to be called Riina tomorrow. One never really knew.
[I don't really know where to go next with this. I've thought of having some scene spun off Jag's meeting with Lecersen in reaction to the attack at Pangalactus, which takes us to the end of Backlash. I might skip to mid(?)-Allies when the Skykhai vid goes viral, and the "breakup" of Jaina and Jag would also be staged for drama.]

Kylo’s hand is a blur as he reaches up over his shoulder and yanks the second axe free. I catch the handle in time with my free hand, but now the first curved blade has the saber hooked, holding me in place as he forces the second axe toward my neck. My body shudders with the force of fending him off, but it isn’t enough; his weapon keeps relentlessly twitching lower, until it’s within striking distance of my throat.
I glare into his ferocious eyes as the sharp metal inches toward my skin. If this is how I’m going out, then I’m not going to give up—not even after the honed blade is embedded in my body and my blood’s gushing out to stain this unfamiliar ground.
“Enough!” Kylo bellows, and we leap away from each other as he releases the downward pressure on the axe at my neck.
Spurned by her lover Prince Temmin, scullery maid Rey takes up her father’s sword, grudgingly teaming up with bounty hunter Kylo Ren to find Temmin’s intended, a kidnapped princess. But war is rising on the horizon, and long-held secrets about the feudal Empire of the Rim are coming to light – things that will forever transform Rey and her world along with it.
