I have this headcanon of all of Clive's previous sexual encounters being unkind (if you know what I mean), so he's never kissed anyone before, not really.

Despite that, Clive is the one who makes the first move while Cid is reluctant to bed him. Clive reminds him too much of Benna. Same haunted eyes. ("Not my type" = can't do this again.) Cid was younger then and made his fair share of mistakes. Their relationship was anything but healthy.

So Cid swears to make right by Clive when they finally succumb to the inevitable pull between them.
