Drawing of the day: Megarhyssa greenei. Bonus mini collage of my favourite non-cartoon wasp drawings. I plan on adding more as I go along. For now, this is only a sample. Drawing wasps is keeping me sane during these dark times. Which one is your favourite?
because i don't have enough goddamn projects i've started work on identifying the ~200 unsorted cuckoo wasps in my lab's collection. i can't get enough of their colors and textures. their shininess makes it very hard to take decent photos through my scope eyepiece so i might have to dig out my old DIY diffusion dome
Not a lichen, but found this gorgeous cuckoo wasp (Chrysididae) dead in our office window well and threw it under the macroscope for a picture. Sadly the photograph doesn't capture the full extent of its iridescence! It is honestly one of the most stunning insects I have ever come across. Learning to look for and appreciate tiby living things never disappoints.
So, I drew it!! She’s based on a cuckoo wasp (Chrysididae), but sadly I think I got the mandibles of the cuckoo wasp kinda off :/ Whatever, they look cute. I also took a lot of liberties with the antennae because I wanted her to have long Miku hair.
I tried to put all of the popular tags for eye strain, the colors are clearly a lotttt, if there are any other commonly used ones I missed, I’d appreciate the heads up!
Pseudospinolia neglecta, from the Badlands of South Dakota. Early on we tried white backgrounds, ended up preferring the black ones...highlights the subject better is the thinking.
The gifs are very cool. It's surprising they don't have more Notes. The animals in each gif - they're real, correct? The description was slightly confusing to me and each gif is so detailed and such a unique perspective I had to ask.
Thanks
Ah, I see how my "anthropomorphic lies" can by confusing. It refers to my habit of seeing human expression in my subjects, tagging things with human concepts like exercising and anticipation even when of course they are just doing their normal animal things.
But yes, the animals are very real!
