Just Friends (2005)
Tumblr media
When I tell you Just Friends is terrible, it’s not just an attempt to expunge my sorrow; it’s a public service announcement. This profoundly misguided, predictable so-called comedy might actually be harmful.
In high school, Chris (Ryan Reynolds) was an overweight wimp pining for his best friend Jamie (Amy Smart) but got stuck in the friend zone. After leaving town for ten years, losing weight, and becoming handsome, Chris gets stuck in his hometown over the Christmas Holiday while promoting ditzy pop star Samantha James (Anna Faris). He sees this misfortune as an opportunity to get the girl he never had.
If it’s been 10 years and you’re still dreaming of “the one that got away”, you’re not a romantic. You're a creep. It’s time to move on. Either accept the relationship you two have and stay friends, or break it off. Don’t keep putting friendship coins in the machine hoping sex will come out. It’s not going to. Not only are you a bad friend for believing this, but you're also a weasel. Unless you live in the universe in which Just Friends takes place. From the beginning, this film was doomed. The premise is inherently bad. And that’s just the beginning.
Everyone in this picture is an empty-headed moron. No one acts like a human being. Humans communicate with words. The people of Just Friends convey their thoughts with ludicrous slapstick, romantic comedy clichés, and contrived developments. That’s when they’re not destroying their surroundings, hitting another person in the face, or watching Chris receive yet another testicle injury. I sat stone-faced while this picture unfolded. Beneath this abomination of a script, you can kind of make out the comedic talents of Ryan Reynolds and Anna Faris, but they are dog-paddling in the middle of a shark-infested ocean, praying someone will throw them a flotation device.
Just Friends barely feels like a real movie. Here I am, minutes after it’s over and I can’t figure out where my time went. It sure felt longer than an hour and thirty-four minutes but there are only 5 sentences worth of a story in what I saw. Everything else is an improbably assembled comedy of errors that amounts to nothing. It’s all desperation, and you can tell no one thought this was going to sell. Repeatedly, it resorts to one of my most hated and creatively bankrupt wannabe gags, that old schtick where kids swear and say inappropriate things. Someone was paid to write this?
It’s like a checklist of everything bad that can happen in a rom-com. Just Friends makes you want to drown yourself in curdled milk. Bad singing, masturbation jokes, parents who misunderstand masturbation jokes, people being tasered, people falling over, homophobic jokes, fat jokes, bad acne jokes.. and on, and on, and on.
There’s only one scenario in which I could recommend Just Friends. If you ever feel upset, depressed, or downright worthless, like your life doesn’t amount to anything, watch this movie. At any other point in your life, it would destroy you to see these actors wasting their time on-screen. At your lowest, it will be like a homeless beggar spotting a tormented soul, stuck in hell for eternity. You’ll realize that your problems can be overcome. There’s still hope in the world! Otherwise, Just Friends just sucks. (On DVD, June 10, 2015)

RIP: 'ELECTION' SADNESS
In ’99, I spoke with then-badass-teen Jessica Campbell, who played Tammy Metzler — a Ross Perot-like lesbian in the holds-up-very-well comedy "Election."
Campbell's unexpected death at 38 was just announced.

Depicting an adolescent dyke
Actress Jessica Campbell on the challenges of playing a thoughtful and sensitive teenage lesbian in Election
By Daniel A. Kusner | Lifestyles Editor
An enormous number of recent films depict high-school life: Varsity Blues, Cruel Intentions, She's All That, Go, Jawbreaker, Rushmore, etc.
But Election, starring Matthew Broderick and Reese Witherspoon, has one character that's sure to have queer moviegoers thrilled when they leave the theater.
Jessica Campbell plays Tammy Metzler, a rebellious teenager who challenges her brother in the race for school president when she finds out he's dating her ex-girlfriend.
Campbell, who was only 14 years old when she accepted the role, says she was uneasy about playing an adolescent dyke at first.
"I didn't know if I could do it, because it was so beyond anything I've ever done — especially the whole lesbian thing," she says. "I live in a neighborhood where it isn't completely okay yet if you're gay. So even just to play a gay person kind of scared me."
Playing a lesbian became an easier decision when Campbell realized that her's was the most honorable character in the film.
"Once I read through the script, I realized that she was really the most stable, thoughtful, sensitve person in the whole thing. She's the closest one to a good person. So that made it okay," says Campbell.
Election is based on a novel by Tom Perrotta.
The story was inspired by two events: the 1992 Presidential Election campaign and an incident where a conservative high school principal in the South invalidated a prom queen election because the winner was pregnant.
Perrotta found the 1992 election intrigu ing because of third-party candidate Ross Perot, a "wild card" who gained attention by attacking the entire system as fraudulent. So Perrotta evoked a similar outsider, third-party candidacy with the lesbian character Tammy.
Campbell says that her personality is altogether different from the rebellious Tammy — another factor that made the part very challenging.
In one scene the candidates deliver speeches. When it's Tammy's turn, she asks the audience of students, "Who cares about this stupid election?"
"In reality, I'm really not that kind of person at all — I try to follow the rules," says Campbell. "I'm kind of a goody two-shoes, so just the thought of standing up and making that kind of speech in front of teachers and other peers was completely different from the kind of person I am."
Campbell got her start as an actress when she began taking acting classes in the second grade.
She quickly won the attention of a talent agent in her hometown of St. Louis and was cast in the lead role of the telefilm In the Best Interest of the Children, starring opposite Sarah Jessica Parker and Sally Struthers.
When asked what her family thought about her portraying a somewhat befuddled lesbian, Campbell says her mom encouraged her to accept the role.
"She was really excited about it. She really didn't care that the character was a lesbian; she was just worried about how I would take it," says Campbell. "My mom said something like 'It would be good to do this, but if you're uncomfortable with it or feel like you may regret it later, then don't do it.'"
When her character Tammy first graces the screen, she's in a very intimate moment with her girlfriend, Lisa.
Director Alexander Payne (Citizen Ruth) wanted to make sure the scene came across just right.
"Actually Frankie [Ingrassia, who played Lisa] and I were stressing out about it because they saved it for the very last scene to film. We were kind of freaking out when Alexander posed us in this really close position. But after the first scene, we got over it, and it really wasn't much more than hanging out with my cousin or doing something like that," she says. "It took a lot of takes because Alexander was like 'More tender. More loving. I'm not convinced.' It wasn't until the fifth or sixth take that he finally decided that we got the right feeling. It took a while."
Campbell admits that at first she was worried that her classmates would harass her about playing a lesbian. She says she only has one gay friend, but many of her friends are bisexual.
Playing a lesbian, however, has actually made her more appealing to the boys at her school, she says
"I haven't been getting teased at all. In fact the guys, and this is kind of sick, the guys all get off on it," laughs Campbell "They're like 'Oh my God! You kissed a girl?' I'm getting more attention from guys now than I ever have in the past. I can't believe I was ever nervous about it."
Tammy (Jessica Campbell) decides to run for school president to spite her wacky brother Paul (Chris Klein) who’s also running and has inadvertently stolen Tammy’s girlfriend.

American Dreamz (2006)
Tumblr media
I came into American Dreamz with low expectations. While I was more pleasantly surprised than not, this film aims at too many targets and sabotages its satirical point in the process. It’s good. It could have been great.
The film follows four characters: Newly re-elected U.S. President Joseph Staton (Dennis Quaid), who suddenly decides to start reading the newspaper and care about what other countries think about America; Martin Tweed (Hugh Grant) the bitter, cynical, and self-loathing host of American Dreamz, a weekly television show not unlike American Idol; Omer Obeidi (Sam Golzari) a would-be terrorist who accidentally ends up competing on American Dreamz; and Sally Kendoo (Mandy Moore) a scheming young woman sees the show as a gateway to fame and money.
Something needed to be cut from this film. I would've chosen the subplot about the US President suddenly realizing that he’s been a buffoon his entire career. While topical in 2006, it doesn’t contribute to the story. The bulk of American Dreamz centers around the titular show. What ties the President to the singing competition? Only his appearance as a guest judge during the final round. That could have been achieved without any subplots and would've done two things. First, it would have given us more time with the film’s most interesting characters, Omer and Sally. Secondly, it would have trimmed the 107-minute running time. I get what the goal was, but it belongs in a different movie.
American Dreamz is at its best when it focuses on Sally and Omer. The two different characters balance each other well. Omer’s story is ludicrous. He’s accidentally selected to compete in the most American competition there is and if he wins, he’ll be charged by his terrorist brethren to blow himself up on live TV, killing the president in the process. You might have mixed feelings about him if he wasn't being coerced into the assassination plot or if he was the least bit frightening. He’s humble and only wants to sing his favorite musical numbers without fear of persecution. There’s something funny about a grown man being bullied into competing in American Idol. On the other side, there’s Sally. She’s not up to anything criminal, but she might as well be. She’ll stab anyone in the back to get to the top, which makes for some darkly funny moments with her boyfriend, a moron named William Williams (Chris Klein).
The picture’s uneven. The stuff with the President is disposable and the ending is a misfire. It's like it was hastily re-written to leave you feeling differently than was originally intended. Considering how much disdain writer-director Paul Weitz seems to have for the American Idol-style competition and the people associated with it, I wouldn't be surprised if the "happy" conclusion was mandated by a focus group-obsessed studio. Nonetheless, I enjoyed it more than I didn’t. I did laugh and the moments where it satirizes the show are on-point. I'll give American Dreamz a mild recommendation. (Full-screen version on DVD, March 9, 2016)

Movie Review #48 - #girlintheredcoatreviews #topfive Movie number #4 - American Pie 2 (2001) You'll notice a theme soon - I generally like the second movie more than the first (controversial I know). American Pie brings the gang of misfit boys back together after there first year of college. The goal - to through the ultimate Summer party by the lake. We see the return of - and this is a big list - Jason Biggs (Jim), Thomas Ian Nicholas (Kevin), Eddie Kaye Thomas (Finch) Chris Klein (Oz) and Sean William Scott (Stifler), Alison Hannigan (Michelle), Shannon Elizabeth (Nadia), Tara Reid (Vicky), Mena Suvari (Heather) and Eugene Levy (Jim's Dad). Now that is a long list of casts - each, I would say, have an equal part storyline. Now you'd think with such a huge cast, he movie would be all over the place. This is not the case. In fact there may be a one or two side stories, but they all come together in the end. The comedy is top notch too! Typical boys behaviour made funny. It may all be about sex in the end, but the road is quite humorous. The relationship between Jim and his Dad has to be the best onscreen relationship ever and Levy, although not a main character, really steals the movie. The running joke of Finch and Stiflers Mom from the first movie is equally as funny in this instalment. I think it's sometimes hard with these type of movies not to repeat on the first. I don't think this movie does that. It still has the general premise, but finds new ways to show them. I got into these movies in my teenagers years, making them very relatable... The trilogy put a comedic spin on horny teenagers, had killer sound tracks, introduced us to the Stifmeister and delivered one of the best lines in a movie... "this one time at band camp..." Who knew such things went on a band camp 🙈#girlintheredcoatreviews #americanpie2 #jasonbiggs #thomasiannicholas #eddiekayethomas #chrisklein #seanwilliamscott #alisonhannigan #tarareid #menasuvari #shannonelizabeth #eugenelevy #moviereview
