Scooby Doo to Hobgoblins cast mapping

Hi Mike everyone, I knew that you would want me to figure out a mapping between the 5-person ensemble cast of characters of the beloved cartoon Scooby Doo, Where Are You? and the abominable b-movie made famous by MST3k, Hobgoblins. Good! ...cuz I went ahead and did it anyway:

First a bullet-point summary, and then some in-depth analysis (where how confident I am about each mapping being given a rank out of 17 stars):

Shaggy = Kevin

Velma = Amy

Scooby = Kyle

Fred = Nick

Daphne = Daphne

Analysis:

(I will be abbreviating “Scooby Doo” as SD and “Hobgoblins” as HG)

Shaggy = Kevin: mapping confidence: 9.5 out of 17. I mapped Shaggy to Kevin primarily because Kevin is the protagonist of Hobgoblins and it’s hard for me to see anyone as the protagonist of SD other than Shaggy or Scooby, and easier to err on the side of mapping the human protagonist. Also because while Fred is ostensibly the leader and most proactive male character in SD (though I would suggest not the protagonist), and Nick is the most proactive or capable male character in HG... but both Fred and Nick’s dating partners kind of lock them down to the mapping set I am describing here.

Velma = Amy: mapping confidence: 14 out of 17. Both casts have two women, one fashion-forward, one demure. While SD’s Velma is a brainy nerd and HG’s Amy is a virginal naïf, they’re still better mappings than SD’s Daphne and HG’s Daphne. Also they both have (relatively) short brown hair! Also also, if Shaggy = Kevin, SD’s Velma and Shaggy were occasionally paired up together as if they were dating, which fits with the Amy and Kevin couple from HG.

Scooby = Kyle: mapping confidence: 12.7 out of 17. HG’s Kyle is not in a relationship with any of the other cast members, which is the easiest rationale for him to be mapped to SD’s canine crime-fighter. Also HG’s Kevin and Kyle are an awesomely alliterative dorky duo that respond to problems by getting in to all manner of comedic hijinks -- which makes them linguistically and actively similar to SD’s Shaggy and Scooby. Kyle’s distinctive red shorts might map to Scooby’s blueish dog collar; but I only added this tentative link because maybe if I added that detail I would forget to mention that Kyle’s taste in phone pornography tends towards beastility -- dagnabbit, I mentioned it anyway >:P

Fred = Nick: mapping confidence: 15 out of 17. SD’s Fred is the planner, trap-maker, muscle, and (often) the van-driver of the group. HG’s Nick spins rakes, throws fire grenades that are about as dangerous as a water balloon or a really hot fajita plate, shows off his biceps, and is the van-owner and driver of the group. Also sometimes their names are similarly deminutived to, “Freddy” and “Nicky”. Also they are both dating someone named...

Daphne = Daphne: mapping confidence: 18 out of 17. They are both named “Daphne”, dating the most dynamic male of the group, dress in a way that the show’s designers coded as ‘fashionable’, and have long hair (sometimes with headband-type things in it). Also did I mention they are both named ‘Daphne’, cuz I feel like I can’t overemphasize that, and it’s part of what makes the Fred / Nick connection kind of inevitable.

In conclusion

If you map characters from one tv show or movie to another tv show or movie, like... be sure to treat them with, yknow, respect.
