The copilot twisted around in his seat one too many times, craning his neck as if searching the cabin for something, jostling the pilot in the process.
Liam grunted in consternation. “Drake!”
Drake spun back around, “What?”
“What is your malfunction?”
“What do you mean?” Drake blinked at him in confusion.
“What do you mean what do I mean?” Liam grunted, “We haven’t made it through the preflight checklist because you keep turning around to stare into the cabin! What the hell is so interesting out there?”
“Nothing!” Drake rolled his shoulders, stared blankly out the cockpit window for a moment then turned back to Liam, “Can you see the guy in 12B?”
“What?” Liam’s head swiveled around and then back. “No. Why?”
Drake’s bottom lip protruded as he shook his head. “No reason.”
Liam watched him skeptically. Drake had been visibly agitated since he’d reported for duty. “There has to be a reason.”
“I…he just….he looks a little squirrely. You know what I mean? Untrustworthy.”
Liam’s eyes widened in alarm. “Is he a threat? Do we need to alert security? Did you see a weapon?” He whipped his head around quickly to try and get a good view of the man in 12B. “I can’t see anything. Riley’s blocking my view.”
“Is she talking to him?” Drake’s entire body moved just as Liam turned back around. Their heads collided with a resounding thwack.
“Ow! Fuck!” Liam grabbed his forehead.
“Sorry, sorry!”
“Seriously man, tell me what’s going on right now. I’m calling security!” Liam reached for the microphone but just as he got it to his mouth, Drake slapped it out of his hands.
“No!”
Liam watched in astonishment as the microphone flew out of his grip and hit the window then bounced off the dash. “Are you on drugs right now? Do I need to get another copilot?”
Drake gaped at him. “Seriously? When have I ever done drugs?”
“I don’t know man, but you’re acting really fucking weird.”
Hana ducked her head in to ask, “Are we almost ready? A couple of the passengers are getting antsy.”
“Which ones?” Drake asked.
Hana’s brows pulled together for a moment then smoothed out as she chuckled. “Oh. You know Riley’s ex is out there, don’t you?”
“What?” Drake’s eyes shot to Liam then back to Hana as he denied it. “I don’t know what you’re talking about!”
A relieved breath whooshed out of Liam. At least he now knew Drake wasn’t on drugs and there wasn’t a terrorist on board. He stifled a laugh. “Sure you don’t.”
“I don’t!” Drake glared at them both.
Hana giggled as she backed out of the cockpit.
They finished the checklist and got airborne, but Drake’s agitation quickly returned. “Do you think he’s better looking than me?”
“Who?”
“The guy! In 12B.”
“How would I know?”
“You’re bisexual, right? You can judge that kind of thing.”
Liam scoffed. “First of all, I haven’t laid eyes on the guy. Second of all, I thought you didn’t care.”
“No, I don’t! I mean….just objectively speaking, out of curiosity….I overheard Hana call him eye candy. He can’t be that good-looking, can he?”
“I dunno Drake, Riley is a ten, so I imagine her ex is no slouch in the looks department either.”
“Great.” Drake huffed as he spun around in his seat again.
“Oh, for the love of God, just go look!”
“I can’t do that!”
“Why not?”
“Because then she’ll know I care!”
Liam cocked an eyebrow at him, “So you do care?”
“I mean she’ll think I care!”
“You’re really an idiot sometimes, you know that?”
“I don’t follow.”
“Of course you don’t.” Liam shook his head. “The only person you’re fooling is yourself. Put the rest of us out of our misery and just tell the girl that you like her already!”
“I’m not going out there.”
“Okay.”
Drake tapped his fingers on his knees for several seconds before jumping out of his seat. “I need to use the bathroom.”
“Sure you do.”
“I had a lot of coffee before we boarded.”
“Sure you did.”
“Fuck you. I’m going to take a piss.”
“Great. Tell Riley I said hi.”
Drake ignored him as he exited the cockpit and headed for the back of the plane where the restrooms were located. He slid his eyes sideways as he passed aisle 12 and scoffed to himself. The guy wasn’t that good-looking.
He was clean-shaven with a strong jawline, and raven hair swept back and gelled to perfection. Was that an Armani suit? How were his eyes that blue?
He slammed into the lavatory and locked the door to glare at himself in the highly polished silver surface of the mirror as he regarded his deep copper-colored eyes and messy, fly-away hair that barely saw a brush, much less hair gel. He ran a hand across the stubble dotting his jaw. It was a strong jawline, wasn’t it? Should he shave?
The guy in seat 12B looked like a CEO or something. Did she like that type? Drake was far more likely to be found in a tent than a boardroom. Did he even own a suit? He owned uniforms. Didn’t women like men in uniforms?
He made pretty good money as a first officer for Cordonian Royal Airlines.
Not CEO money.
“Fuck!” He spun and lashed out at the toilet. His foot connected to the stainless steel sending a sharp jolt of pain shooting up his leg.
There was a knock at the door. “Everything okay in there?”
Shit! It was Riley! “I’m fine. Dropped my…. Wallet…” Fuck, Walker! What the shit is wrong with you, man? Your wallet really?
“Are you sure because that didn’t sound like—”
“I said I’m fine!”
“Okay. Just let me know if—oh, excuse me what?”
From the other side of the door, a man’s voice murmured something he couldn’t make out then both people moved away.
Was that the ex talking to her? He forced himself to count to twenty so he didn’t just barrel out of the bathroom after them. He took several deep calming breaths like Max had tried to show him last time he had been upset about something. At least he thought it was what Max had done. At the time, he had mostly ignored him.
With an air of calm he most certainly did not feel, he exited the lavatory. His eyes went straight to seat 12B. Empty. He backtracked and ducked into the crew area.
Sure enough, there was Riley standing in the middle of the empty inflight catering kitchen talking to Mr. CEO.
All his jealousy evaporated in an instant as he took in her demeanor. Her arms were folded defensively across her chest and her face was furrowed into a frown. She was shaking her head as she leaned forward, her voice lowered but her entire body radiating her discomfort with the conversation.
The guy reached out and grabbed her arm.
She flinched away.
Oh hell no.
Drake didn’t remember moving but he was suddenly next to them, his hand wrapped firmly around the man's wrist. He flung the other man’s arm away from Riley and through gritted teeth asked, “Is there a problem here?”
The man gave him a startled look then annoyance flashed across his face. “We were just having a discussion.”
“Doesn’t look like the lady’s enjoying the conversation.”
“Mind your own business,” he shook his head dismissively and reached for her again, “Riley, if we could just talk privately—”
Drake intercepted the motion before he could touch her. “If you’re attached to that hand and wish to keep it, then I would strongly advise you against touching her again.”
He jerked his hand out of Drake’s grasp and rubbed his wrist. “Was that really necessary?”
Drake never took his eyes off the man as he leaned his body toward Riley, “Do you want to talk to this guy?”
“No.”
“But, Riley—”
“We have nothing to talk about, Nick!”
Drake angled his body so that he was blocking Riley from Nick’s view. He crossed his arms over his chest. “You heard her.”
Nick looked like he wanted to press the issue, but after taking in Drake’s stormy expression, thought better of it. He straightened his suit jacket with a sharp tug. “Fine. I’ll see you at the wedding. We’ll talk then.”
“You’re not coming to my sister’s wedding!”
“Oh, didn’t I tell you? I’ll be there as Clarissa’s plus one.”
Riley shook her head back and forth. “Seriously? When we were dating, you couldn’t stand her!”
A gloating smile crept across his face. “Jealous?”
“Why would I be jealous?”
“Because you’re not over me, Riley. If you were, you’d have bothered to line up a date for the wedding.”
“I—”
“She has a date for the wedding.” Drake cut in as he casually slung his arm around her shoulders.
Nick turned his gaze to Drake for a long, evaluating moment. “Are you the new boyfriend then?”
“Yep. And I’m only going to ask you once to return to your seat. If you don’t stop harassing the flight crew, I will land this plane and have security escort you off of it.”
Nick’s eyes widened slightly as he huffed out, “You wouldn’t dare!”
Riley ran her hand down Drake’s arm as she smirked at Nick, “He would. He’s very protective when it comes to me. I wouldn’t test him if I were you.”
“Whatever,” Nick bumped Drake’s shoulder as he shoved past them and exited the kitchen.
Drake’s arm was still around Riley as he turned his head to watch Nick leave. “Let me know if he bothers you again and I’ll—”
Riley spun on him in fury, her fists raining blows on his chest. “What the fuck did you just do, Drake?”
His hand flew to his chest. “Ow! What the hell, Riley? I just rescued you from that guy!”
“I didn’t need rescuing, Drake. I can handle Nick. He’s an asshole, but he’s not a serial killer or something!”
Drake scoffed with a shake of his head, “I think the phrase you’re looking for is thank you.”
“Oh yeah? Really?”
“Yeah, really!”
“Do you know what you just did? Do you?”
“Um…got the asshole ex-boyfriend to leave you alone?”
“No, you fucking jackass.” She slapped his arm. “You just told him that you’re my boyfriend and my date to my sister’s wedding!”
“So?”
“So?” She threw her arms up in the air. “So when I show up at the wedding with no date and no boyfriend he’ll know that was a lie and I’ll be humiliated!”
“Oh.”
“Yeah…oh!”
They stood in silence for a long moment, Drake rubbing his chest and Riley fuming. Then Drake quietly said, “I’ll go to the wedding with you.”
“What?”
“I mean….if you want me to.”
“I…”
“I did get you into this situation. Let me make it up to you by getting you out of it. One fake boyfriend slash date for sister’s wedding coming right up!”
All the fight went out of her as she took in the hopeful smile on his face. “I can’t ask you to do that, Drake.”
“Why not?”
“Because the wedding is on Valentine’s Day and I’m sure you already have plans. I can’t ask you to cancel—”
“Pfffftttt.” He waved a hand dismissively in the air. “I do not have plans for Valentine’s Day!”
“You don’t?”
Did she sound hopeful?
“No, I do not. No girlfriend, no friend with benefits, no romantic entanglements at all.”
Except with you.
A delighted smile broke out across her face. “Okay, then.”
“So, we’re good?”
She gave him a flirtatious smile as she flipped her hair and turned to leave. “We’re good.”
“Okay, good.”
He watched her walk away with a contented smile on his lips then followed her out of the kitchen and back to the front of the plane. He glowered at Nick as he passed aisle 12.
Nick returned the glare as he adjusted his headphones and slid down in the seat.
When he stepped onto the flight deck Liam greeted him with smug satisfaction. “That was the longest piss in the world.”
“Shut up.” He slid into the copilot seat without looking at his best friend.
“So how’d it go? Did you get a good look at her ex?”
“Um….yeah… he’s a pushy bastard. I had to tell him to keep his hands to himself and….”
“And?”
Drake released a long-suffering sigh knowing Liam was going to find out sooner or later. Riley would tell Max and Max would tell everyone else. “I’m going as her date to her sister’s wedding.”
“Wow! That’s quite a jump from ‘I don’t like her like that’.” Liam chortled gleefully.
Drake kept quiet but his foot started tapping nervously.
“Oh, shit, there’s more! What is it?” Liam prodded.
“Ah…”
“Don’t make me call Max and find out.”
“Fuck,” he muttered under his breath.
“Come on, what else?”
“It’s on Valentine’s Day,” he answered with a resigned sigh.
Liam practically danced out of his seat. “This is amazing! This is epic! Mr. I will never take a woman out on Valentine’s Day because that’s far too much pressure and it’s all about commercialization anyway is taking a woman out on Valentine’s Day. To her sister’s wedding!”
“Why does this make you so happy?”
“Because I get to say I told you so forever!”
“It’s not even a real date.”
“Sure it’s not.”
“It’s not!”
“Does she know that?”
“Yes! I just said I was her boyfriend so that Nick guy would stop—”
“Wait! Wait! You played the pretend boyfriend card to back off her ex?”
“Yeah…so?”
Liam threw his head back and belly laughed. “You are such a goner!”
Drake pressed his lips into a tight line and returned his attention to the control panel. He wanted to argue, he really did. But he couldn’t.
He was absolutely a goner.
And he was going to have to buy a suit.
Shit.

Riley walked into the informal dining room of Balymore, her estate in Valtoria, to find the table draped with a red silk cloth, flames flickering from wrought iron candelabras, and gleaming silver cloches gracing the tabletop.
Her mouth fell open and she turned to her husband in name only in astonishment. “What is all this?”
“Oh…ah…” Drake stuttered over his words as his brain spun frantically trying to find the right thing to say that would make his romantic gesture less romantic and not awkward. “I…um…I know you were disappointed that Liam had to cancel your plans for today, so I just wanted to do something to cheer you up.”
Disappointed was an understatement. It was Valentine’s Day and Liam had cancelled their plans. She shouldn’t be surprised. She should be used to it. But it hurt. A good cry and a hot bath had helped, but after a long nap, she’d found herself ravenous. Her quest for food had led her downstairs where she’d followed her nose to find the source of the delicious aroma wafting up to her.
Confusion pinged through her as she took in his demeanor. “What about your plans? Didn’t you have a date?”
“Yeah, well, that fell through.”
“Oh, Drake, I’m so sorry!” Her voice was full of so much sympathy that he felt like an ass for lying.
“It wasn’t anything serious anyway.” The truth was, he had canceled the date when he’d realized Riley would be left home alone. He had only asked the girl out so that he wouldn’t be home when Liam arrived. Not out of jealousy, but fear of discovery. He was sure his best friend could read his love for his supposedly in-name-only wife all over his face.
It was getting harder to fight his feelings for her. The more Liam fucked up and neglected her, the harder it became.
He wasn’t jealous of Liam per se. He loved the guy, and he was fully aware of the myriad web of circumstances that had led to him having to marry for political alliances and not love.
Still.
The effect it had on Riley was the same and it hurt him to watch her suffer. He had agreed to marry her to keep her at court and near Liam. A marriage of convenience. A favor for his friends. An act of service for the two people he loved most in the world.
The problem was that the longer they lived together, the closer they became and the harder he fell. He had tried to fix it, put distance between them, but his stupid, traitorous heart wouldn’t let him move on. And he had tried.
The first year they were together had been so full of turmoil that he had just focused on getting her through it. Once they had moved to Valtoria and she had settled into her new position as Duchess, she had encouraged him to find a relationship of his own.
“You shouldn’t have to suffer just because I am.”
The full truth of the situation was that he had only half-heartedly dated so that she would stop worrying about him and his happiness. Because he would do anything for her. Even date other women. But his heart had never been in it.
Every relationship he had entered had ended before it really began. Two or three dates at most. Several of the women had dumped him citing with confusion that he seemed to actually love his wife.
Everyone on the planet could see that, apparently. Everyone but her.
Because she was too busy letting Liam break her heart over and over.
“Still. I’m sorry your date canceled. I know what that feels like.”
“I’m fine.” He brushed her concern off with a twinge of guilt but telling her that he had been the one to cancel would just open up questions he wasn’t ready to answer. Or more to the point, questions he wasn’t sure she was ready to hear the answers to.
He would confess his feelings right then and there if he thought she returned them. But she was in love with Liam. He knew that.
“Stop worrying about my love life and come eat before it gets cold.”
She inhaled deeply as she stepped toward the table, “It smells so good! What is it?”
“Deep fried chicken and cheese stuffed avocado.” He told her as he pulled her chair out for her.
Her face lit up as she sat. “Really?”
“Yes,” he affirmed as he took his own seat. “I know it’s your favorite.”
“But…how? I gave the kitchen staff the night off!” Neither of them had planned to be home.
“Oh, ah…” a flush spread across his face as he rubbed the back of his neck, “I made it.”
She pulled the cloche off the plate then turned her head to him in bewilderment, “You made this?”
He scoffed while shaking his head. “Don’t act so surprised. I can cook. You know this.”
“I mean yes but this is next level!” The avocados were browned to perfection and served with a beautifully roasted Mediterranean vegetable medley, garlic mashed potatoes, and piping hot Ciabatta bread.
He tried to lighten the mood. “I’m offended that you’re this impressed, Riley. I have mad kitchen skills.”
“I know. I just can’t believe that you did all this for me.” A single tear slid down her cheek.
He leaned forward in concern, wiping the tear away. “Hey, hey, hey! What’s that about?”
“Nothing,” she smiled at him through the wetness pooling in her eyes. “These are happy tears. I didn’t think this day could be salvaged, but you somehow managed it.”
“Yeah, well, what are husbands for?” He gave her a disarming smile as he sat back in his chair and turned his attention to his plate.
She laughed at their shared joke. He always said that when he did something nice for her. It was funny because he wasn’t really her husband.
But he kind of was, wasn’t he?
She dropped her eyes to her plate to cover her sudden flush. He was always doing sweet things like this. He was always there when she needed someone to talk to. Though she would never tell Max or Hana, Drake had become her best friend.
He had left his job as a member of the King’s Guard to move to Valtoria with her. He had been there for her when her grandmother passed away. The last time Liam had stood her up, Drake was ready with her favorite pizza and a movie she’d been wanting to see.
What are husbands for?
It was beginning to feel less and less like a joke because it had become the truth.
How true?
She suspected Drake’s feelings for her. How could she not? She had pushed him to date others. It wasn’t fair to let him waste his life taking care of her when she was in love with another man.
Yet here he was, on Valentine’s Day, taking care of her once again.
She stole a surreptitious glance at him as they ate. Maybe he had deeper feelings for her than she initially suspected.
No, she was imagining things. He was just being a good friend. Because that is what he was. Her friend. And Liam’s.
Liam.
Guilt swirled through her at the thought of her supposed boyfriend. Annoyance followed the guilt. He had stood her up. Again. Why should she feel guilty for anything? He married another woman for the love of God.
Not because he wanted to.
The guilt was back at the reminder of the impossible situation Liam had been placed in, but it was mingled with hurt, embarrassment, and a fair amount of anger.
She knew everyone thought she was an idiot for waiting around on scraps of the king’s time and affection. For uprooting her entire life to chase after him to Cordonia in the first place, for staying even after his rejection, and for continuing to believe that she was a priority to him.
Everyone but Drake.
He never judged her.
She lifted her eyes to his face as he regaled her with tales of Max’s misadventures from when he had tagged along on Drake’s latest fishing trip with Bastien.
“… And then he tripped over the side of the boat and fell in the water!” Drake shook with laughter at the memory.
Riley forced an obligatory smile, but she had missed most of the story, her mind occupied with an entirely new idea.
Her eyes focused on his mouth hoping he didn’t notice the flush on her face as her mind refused to stray away from imagining what his lips would feel like on her neck, on her mouth…other places….
She forced her eyes down to her plate and focused on eating her dinner. The dinner that her husband in allegedly name only had taken the time to prepare with his own two hands.
When the meal was over, she tried to clear the table, but he wouldn’t let her. “No, no, I’ve got this! I’m just going to clear the table and rinse the plates real quick. Why don’t you go pick something to watch? Whatever you want.”
“You sure? You did all this work. The least I can do is let you pick the movie.”
“Nah.” He waved her offer away. “As long as you’re happy, I’m happy.”
A multitude of emotions swirled through her as she watched him walk out of the room with the dishes. If you’re happy, I’m happy. He meant that. He was always saying things like that. He was always going out of his way to do little things to make her happy.
She made her way to the media room and flipped absently through the streaming selections as a million images of Drake fell through her mind. Drake, making her laugh when she was sad. Drake, holding her when she cried. Drake, always keeping himself between her and the reporters. Drake, scrambling eggs in their kitchen at two a.m. because they’d stayed up late watching stand-up comedy specials again.
When had he become such a huge part of her life? Yes, she had married him, but that had been on paper only, so she could stay near Liam.
And yet it was Drake who had attended her grandmother’s funeral with her. It was Drake who had taken care of her when she had the flu last year. And it was always Drake who picked up the pieces after Liam shattered her heart time and time again.
Why was she keeping him at arm’s length?
He showed up in the media room with her favorite blanket, a steaming cup of hot chocolate, and a small box tucked under his arms.
She accepted the cup and the blanket while trying to peer at the box. “What’s that?”
“Oh, this?” He teased, holding it out toward her but up out of her reach.
Her eyes widened as she glimpsed the label. “Are those dark chocolate truffles?”
“Maybe…”
“Drake!” She laughed as she deposited her cup on the end table and made a grab for the promised treat.
He lifted them easily out of her reach with a teasing smile. “What? Did you want these?”
“You know I do!” She tried to pout but the smile tugging her lips upward made that difficult to maintain.
“I don’t know….” He pretended to think deeply about it. “Maybe I should keep these for myself.”
With a joyful laugh, she launched herself off the couch, her fingers touching, but not completely grasping the elusive chocolates. The impact of her body colliding into his, combined with his misstep as he tried to dodge her, sent him toppling backward onto the couch where he landed in a slightly reclined position. Her momentum carried her forward so that she landed on top of him, laying on his chest, looking up into his face.
They were both laughing as their gazes met. A sudden silence descended on them as they stared into each other’s eyes. The smiles faded as lips parted and breath caught.
She moved first, bringing her lips to his. Her kiss was tentative. His response was not.
His arms went around her, the box of truffles dropped and forgotten on the floor. He pulled her tight against him as his tongue deftly took control of her mouth. One hand tangled in her hair as the other slipped under her shirt to caress the smooth skin of her back. A plaintive whimper escaped him as he pressed his rapidly growing hardness up into her.
Riley responded, melting into his embrace, no longer tentative. She pressed herself against him as their kisses became more passionate, almost frantic.
She broke the kiss to gasp for air. “Drake…should we—"
Drake froze for a moment, and then jolted upright, gently moving her off him. “Shit, Riley!” He raked a hand through his hair as he pushed himself back away from her. “I shouldn’t have done that. I’m sorry!”
“What are you sorry for? I kissed you!”
“It was just the heat of the moment.”
“Is that all it was?” She asked him softly.
“Yeah…” He responded unconvincingly.
“Are you sure it wasn’t more than that?”
“Like what?”
“I don’t know…” her fingers twisted the hem of her shirt nervously. “You made this whole romantic dinner…”
“I wanted to cheer you up. Because we’re friends and—"
“You went out of your way to get me my favorite candy.”
“No, I didn’t. I just….” He closed his eyes with a shuddering sigh before pushing through with the lie. “I was already in the store, and I saw it…”
“You’re a bad liar.”
His eyes flew open, and he fixed her a look that was almost pleading. “What do you want from me, Riley?”
“I think the question is, what do you want from me, Drake?” She scooted closer to him taking in the way he watched her warily. Like a rabbit watching a coyote approach, his face full of fear, longing, and a guarded passion.
He swallowed thickly and tried for a normal tone of voice. “The movie…”
Her hand slid up his thigh to the bulge in his pants. “A movie? Is that really what you want right now?”
“Fuck…” he breathed out in defeat as a shudder ran through his body. He grabbed her wrist to stop her but instead of pushing her away as he had intended, he found himself pulling her into him as he leaned forward, and then they were kissing again.
Lips and hands explored bodies and pulled at clothing. His heart thundered in his chest as a small part of his mind screamed at him to stop, to put the brakes on this.
That part was overruled as she pulled her top off and dropped it on the floor next to them. He stopped breathing for a moment as he drank in her naked form. He yanked his own shirt off and dove back in.
Riley arched her back as she gave herself over to the sensations cascading through her body. Drake’s hands on her bare skin were calloused, rough. The friction was a sharp contrast to the smoothness of her bare flesh. It felt good, forbidden, delicious. She shivered as goosebumps erupted along her spine.
His hot lips on her throat sent ribbons of white-hot desire shooting through her and coiling in her center.
She cried out in protest when he withdrew that touch. “Why are you stopping?”
“I…we shouldn’t…”
“Don’t you want me?”
A self-deprecating laugh slipped out of him. “I want you so fucking bad….you have no idea….. but not like this.”
“Like what?”
“You’re upset…vulnerable...”
“I was upset.” She drew his hand back to her body; he didn’t resist as she placed it so it was cupping a pert breast. “That’s not what I’m feeling right now.”
He was struggling mightily to keep his voice even as he gasped for breath. “…don’t want you to regret…”
“I won’t…”
“You’re in love with Liam…”
“I am…” She dropped her hand and pulled back a little. “We can stop if you want.”
“If I want?” His gaze searched hers, unsure exactly what he was looking for.
“Yes, you. I don’t want to stop.”
“But Liam—”
“I don’t want to think about Liam right now, Drake. I don’t want to think about tomorrow or what any of this means. But…” She moved away from him reluctantly. “I understand if you do.”
He instantly regretted the distance between them.
Before he could decide how to proceed, there was a knock at the door.
Drake’s eyes closed as frustration, relief and a smidge of anger pinged through him.
There was only one person it could be this late.
Talk about timing.
He quickly pulled his shirt back on and tossed her blouse to her. “I’ll go answer the door. You might want to fix your hair, it’s a little mussed.”
“Drake—”
“No, it’s okay,” he told her as he pulled her to him and dropped a quick kiss on the top of her head before pushing her gently away. “Go make yourself presentable. I’ll show Liam in.”
“Right.” She redressed and hurried over to the closest mirror to smooth her hair back into place.
Drake combed his fingers through his own hair on his way to the front door. Pulling it open, he greeted his best friend with, “Thought you couldn’t get away, Your Majesty?”
“Some last-minute things came up, but I finally managed to slip away.”
“It’s a little late. Valentine’s Day is pretty much over.”
Liam glanced at his watch as he stepped through the doorway. “Not really. Where is she? And why are you home? I thought you had a date.”
Drake shrugged. “She canceled on me. Sick pet or something.” He was only a little horrified at how easily the lie rolled off his tongue. “Riley’s in the media room. We were just about to watch a movie.”
Liam started down the hall. Looking over his shoulder, he asked, “Are you coming?”
“No. I’m going to turn in early. You two have fun.”
He needed a shower. A cold one.
He sprinted up the stairs, taking them two at a time. He slammed his bedroom door behind him and then leaned back against it, gently banging his head into it several times before muttering to himself, “The fuck did I just do? Stupid, stupid, stupid!”
He shed his clothes as he walked across to the room and into the ensuite. He needed relief.
The water pounded down on him as he wrapped his hand around himself. His head tipped back and his eyes fell closed as he remembered her half-naked form in front of him, the feel of her skin under his fingers, the taste of her lips…..
He groaned out loud as streams of milky whiteness pulsed out of him and splashed onto the tile. He placed both hands on the wall and leaned forward, letting the water run over the back of his head as he watched the detritus of his desire swirl down the drain.
It wasn’t the first time that his ardor for her had landed him in this position, but he knew it was different this time.
They had crossed a line tonight. A line that couldn’t be uncrossed. Even though they hadn’t done the deed, the genie was out of the bottle-- his feelings for her, their obvious sexual attraction to each other, all of it.
He just had no idea what to do about any of it.

Brooklyn Heights, New York City
As Riley carefully placed the gumdrops on the roof of the gingerbread house, William stood nearby, watching her intently. “Mama, put red one there,” pointing to the chimney top. William was serious about the details of the house. For him, everything had to be ‘just right’.
Riley softly smiled. William wanted everything perfect for his Christmas gift to his father.
"Mama, can I help?"
"Of course, honey." Riley handed him the bag of candy, and William began to place them on the house, giggling as he did so.
"You're doing a great job, LiLi. Your Daddy will be so proud of you.”
"Look, Mama! It's finished."
"Yes, it is ... almost. We just need a few more pieces of candy and we should put more ‘snow’ on the roof."
William squealed with delight as Riley handed him the piping tube of frosting to hold, as they began to finish the roof together.
Just as they were finishing up, Riley heard the front door open, and she turned to see Matteo coming into the brownstone, a large bag of Chinese take-out food in his arms.
"Surprise! We thought we'd bring dinner." Daniel announced while Matteo nodded his head to the royal guard standing next to the entrance. Daniel followed, stomping the snow from his boots.
"Thanks, guys. You're the best." Riley carefully moved the house to the counter to set, to make room for dinner.
"Unca Dan Dan! Unca Matty! Look what Mama and I made." William tugged at Daniel’s coat.
"Wow, that looks so cool, LiLi." Daniel squatted down for a mini fist bump.
William beamed, "It's a gingerbread house for Daddy. He's going to be surprised."
"He will. I'm sure he'll love it." Matteo placed the bag of food on the table and pulled out his phone. "We should take a picture."
Riley nodded, "Good idea. Come on, everyone."
They all gathered around the gingerbread house, smiling as Matteo snapped a few photos.
"Perfect. Thanks, guys.”
"We got your favorites, Ri. Orange chicken, vegetable lo mein, and fried rice."
"You know me so well." Riley smiled appreciatively.
“Ummmm ... Ri?”
Riley looked at Daniel, noticing he was moving his head toward the Royal guard. “Do we need to feed ‘Lurch’ over there?” he whispered.
Smirking, Riley shook her head ‘no’ and asked, "What's the special occasion?"
"Just a quiet night in. It's been a long week of travelling." Matteo sighed. “I am beat.”
"Well, we have three days here before we leave for Greece," Daniel shimmied over to kiss Matt on the lips as William climbed into his toddler seat.
"What's happening in Greece?" Riley asked, puzzled.
"Matty’s corporate New Year's Eve party is being held at a private estate this year in Athens," Daniel answered.
"Wow. Sounds fancy." Riley grinned, setting plates on the table.
"It will be.” Matteo winked at Daniel.
“Speaking of fancy ... and what about you, Riley?  What has Liam planned for you and William this Christmas?”
Riley glanced at the royal guards standing near the entrance. She knew Liam would be returning in a few days, knowing that the guards received the King’s itinerary this morning. "Actually, I'm not entirely sure, yet."
"Maybe a romantic dinner up in the Hampton’s," Daniel suggested, waggling his brows at Matteo. "The man owns a private jet, Dan. The sky’s the limit." Matteo added.
Riley giggled, "Who knows? I am just thrilled he will be here with us," mussing William’s hair as he returned her smile.
"So, how are things with you two?" Riley asked, changing the subject.
"Good. Great, actually" Daniel replied with twinkling eyes.
"Couldn't be better, Daniel is right. The change of scenery has been fantastic," Matteo agreed, giving Riley a wink.
"Uh, ha," Riley chuckled, suspiciously. "Okay ... what is it?” Riley laughed, knowing her best friend all too well.
"We might have some news."
"Daniel ..." Matteo shook his head, "Not until after we formally announce it."
"Spill. You can't just say something like that and not give details." Riley demanded., chuckling.
"Okay, okay. I cannot keep it a secret any longer. We're getting married!"
Riley gasped, "Oh my god, Daniel! Oh! You guys! Congratulations!”
"Thank you, Ri.” Riley stood up and gave Daniel a huge hug. Matteo smirked, knowing all too well that Daniel could not wait to tell his best friend the good news.
"I can't believe you're getting married. That is amazing.” Riley gushed hugging Matteo.
"We're really, really happy, Ri. And we could not have done this without you. If you hadn't encouraged us to take a chance, we would have never realized how perfect we are together." Matteo gazed lovingly at Daniel.
"It was all you two,” Riley countered. “You both just needed a push in the right direction.”
"We're so glad you were the one to push us. This is the best Christmas ever!”, Matteo grinned.
"So, when's the big day?"
"We haven't decided yet. But we're thinking sometime in the spring," Daniel squeezed Matt's hand.
"That sounds lovely. I can't wait." Riley paused ... “Oh, I mean ...”
"Neither can we. Riley, would you do me the honor of being my maid of Honor?”
"Oh, yes! I'm really, really happy for you guys. You deserve all the happiness in the world. Yes! I would be honored.”
"Thanks, Ri. That means so much to me."
As they sat down and began to eat, Riley could not help but feel a tinge of sadness. She knew that the wedding would be beautiful in Greece, and she was happy for her friends, but ... she could not help but wish that she and Liam were engaged, too, and planning a future.
"Mama, can I have some chicken?" William asked, snapping her out of her thoughts.
"Of course, honey." Riley placed a piece of chicken on his plate, cutting the piece into bite size portions. William dug in, grinning.
Standing up from the table, Riley's eyes were filling with unshed tears as she excused herself from the table, turning towards her bedroom. Needing a chance to breathe and have some space, she walked into her room and clicked the door closed behind her. Riley bowed her head, wiping the tears now flowing freely down her cheeks, and slid down to the floor.
It was hard not to think about all the ‘what-ifs’.
What would have happened if they could have found Tariq in time to stop the wedding?
What if Liam had chosen her the night of his coronation instead of Madeleine?
What if Liam had chosen her, scandal be damned? As she sat on the floor, more memories surfaced.
A memory of her and Liam together in the blue grotto in Italy, when Liam mentioned abdicating the throne as a way of moving forward.
'There's this thought I can't shake off ... what our life could look like together. You and I. Without the court and the Crown.'
'What does it look like?'
'The parts I know? We elope and get married in a small, private ceremony...'
Riley wiped her tears. knowing that this was in the future for Daniel and Matteo, but not for her.
‘But you can't abdicate, Liam. You wouldn't be happy if you gave up the throne and... you wouldnt be you. In your heart, you know that.’
’If I do marry Madeleine, can you go on like this? Stealing moments, meeting in secret?’
"Mama?" William’s little voice sounded outside her door, interrupting her thoughts.
"Yes, LiLi?" Riley softly spoke, standing up and wiping her tears away. She opened her door to see William looking up at her.
"Are you sad, mama?" William pointed to her eyes.
"No, honey. I'm just happy for Uncle Dan and Uncle Matty."
"They marry?"
"Yes, they are. Isn't that exciting?"
"Mama, are you and Daddy marry, too?"
Riley took a deep breath and put her arm around William, "someday, maybe."
“We can be a real family."
"We're already a real family, William. No matter what happens, you and I will always be together."
"Promise?"
"...and Daddy too?"
Riley closed her eyes, her hands trembling as she tried not to break down. She was unable to speak and was trying to catch her breath.
"Mama? Why crying?"
"I-I'm sorry, William. I'm just feeling a little sad. It has been a long day.”
Overhearing William, Daniel pushed open the bedroom door.
"Hey buddy, go see Uncle Matt and finish your dinner."
“Okay, Dan Dan.” As William went back into the kitchen, Daniel sat down beside Riley and hugged her tightly.
“Riley?" Daniel questioned his friend.
"Y-Yes. Everything's fine."
"Doesn't look like it."
"I'm just...it's hard, you know? To watch my best friend, get married when..."
"I know, Riley. It is difficult. But remember, you and Liam are in a good place, now. And who knows? Maybe someday, you will be the ones getting married."
Riley’s breath shuddered as she looked at Daniel, searching his eyes, staying silent.
"I understand this is hard, but you can't let the past hold you back. You and Liam have come so far. You just have to take things one step at a time."
Riley's cell pinged with a message. Picking up her phone, ‘Liam’ appeared on the screen.
Cordonian Royal Palace
Olivia, standing in for Liam, and standing for the Royal council, sat at the King's desk. Rashad and his father, the Crown’s personal legal counsel, sat on the sofa next to Liam’s large ornate desk. Madeleine's heels could be heard clicking down the hallway, stopping outside of the study door. Madeleine cleared her throat before Bastien opened the door and allowed her to enter.
Entering the King’s study, her face was impassive.
"Where is Liam?"
"The King is occupied with important matters. He's asked me to represent him in this meeting." Olivia coldly, but politely answered the ex-queen of Cordonia.
Madeleine’s glare turned nasty as she looked at Olivia in disdain.
"Keep it up Madeleine. As the King’s representative, you will deal with me and answer all the questions I am looking for. Is that understood, Madeleine? I am not your subject.” Olivia sat back confidently.
"I am not in the mood for a lecture," Madeleine scoffed.
"Very well. I am here to discuss the matter of the succession of the Crown. I trust the council has brought you up to speed?"
"Indeed, they have." Olivia responded.
"Good. Then there is no need to waste time. Let's get down to business." Madeleine said with a smirk. "As you know, the King has yet to select a queen, and secure an heir to his throne. Given his indecisiveness, I propose that the council appoint an heir, should Liam not produce an heir by his thirtieth birthday."
"We're well aware of the succession laws, and I assure you, the council will make the necessary decisions, should the time come." Olivia rebutted.
"The King's appointment must meet the established criteria. Should the King choose an heir that does not meet the qualifications, the council is authorized to remove the heir from the line of succession."
"Your point being, Madeleine? I am sure that you understand that you no longer have any sovereignty in Cordonia." Olivia confidently countered.
"My point is, is that if he fails to produce an heir, then the council has the authority to choose an alternate. I propose that the council select my unborn child to be named as the heir, since the child was conceived while our marriage was valid. My child meets the requirements, and should the King fail to produce an heir, the council would have no choice but to appoint my child."
Rashad's eyes narrowed. "I'm afraid you're mistaken, Madeleine. The law is quite clear. A child cannot be appointed as an heir, unless said child is adopted by the monarch first."
"...and Liam could adopt my child,” Madeleine seethed.
Rashad continued, “that would require the child to live under the guardianship of the monarch, which is not possible, given the circumstances. Your residence is in Morocco, not Cordonia. as per the marriage dissolution filed legally."
Olivia nodded, "The council will consider your proposal. In the meantime, Liam's position is still unchanged. He is free to choose his own heir, should the need arise.”
Madeleine stood up from her armchair and turned toward the bay window overlooking the gardens, contemplating her retort her arms crossed.
"Madeleine, you cannot expect the King to simply appoint your child, when he has another option." Olivia rebutted, knowing that Madeleine was aware of William.
Rashad added, “again the law is quite clear. A child who is conceived by the monarch while married or not, has the right to a place in the line of succession, even if the parents are not together."
"Even if the child is a bastard? He was conceived outside our marriage.” Madeleine spat, frothed with resentment.
"Yes. As was your child," Rashad reminded her.
"This is absurd. We are done here....guards!” Olivia summoned, as Madeleine was escorted out of the study by the Royal guard.
***
Liam, Leo, Drake and Bastien watched the entire exchange virtually from Liam’s personal quarters.
"Do you think she's capable of harming Riley?” Drake wondered aloud.
"Yes, I am sure of that. If not herself ... her father. Liam sat back in his chair, his hands steepled in front of his mouth, annoyance etched on his face.
"I think that she is desperate and will do whatever she can to get what she wants.” Leo added supporting his brother.
“Bastien, begin the surveillance protocol on the countess and her father, Liam commanded.
“Consider it done, your Majesty.” Bastien confirmed, standing to leave the room.
"Do you think it’s wise to bring Riley and your son back to Cordonia?” Drake questioned.
"It's the only way, Drake.”
"What if Riley doesn't want to come back to Cordonia?"
"Then I will support her decision, but I have to at least try.”
Liam stood, walking to his private chambers, with phone in hand.
‘Hello Riley!’
‘Liam, hi! How are you?'
‘I'm well. How are you and William keeping?’
‘We're doing great. We miss you, though.’
‘I miss you both, too.’
‘I have a proposition for you...’
‘Oh?’
‘How would you and William like to come to Cordonia and stay with me at the palace after Christmas?’
Riley blinked, not sure how to respond.
‘When I go home after spending Christmas week with you...come back to Cordonia with me.'
'Liam, you can't be serious.'
'I'm quite serious, love.'
'You want me and William to come to Cordonia and stay with you in the palace?'
'Yes, I want you both here with me.'
'Li, I don't know. That seems like a big step.'
'I understand your hesitation. But please, just consider it.'
'I will see you in a couple of days, love. We can talk more then.'
'OK, I am looking forward to seeing you, Li. William made something special just for you.'
Liam smiled, 'I look forward to seeing it, but love, the only thing I want for Christmas is you.'

While snowed in together, Trystan asks the Ginovesi crew a morbid question.
Characters: Trystan Thorne, Emily Rose, Ruby Webster, Luke Watanabe
WC: 2.1k
R: Teen | CW: Talks of death & Spoilers for 2.15
CFWC Prompt: Stuck in a snowstorm
Tumblr media
Glistening fairy lights cornered all four walls of Luke and Ruby’s apartment, the yellow bulbs warming their hearth. A tree dusted with faux snow and wrapped with pink garlands sat by the TV, brimming with gifts underneath. Honeysuckle wine and a charcuterie board made by Emily were set on the table, crackers and prosciutto splattered across. The surly detective giggled, crossing her arms at Trystan’s creation.
“You are such a showoff.”
Trystan laughed at her remark as he set the main course on the dinner table. Husks of steam slipped out of the honey-glazed duck, leaving their mouths watering. Roasted pears and plump blood sausages sat beside it, the heavenly aroma wafting around the air.
“You know I live to boast, darling.”
“I think my dish is way better,” Luke beamed, setting his strawberry spongecake beside the duck. Ruby giggled, laying a batch of cookies on the table.
“It certainly looks amazing,” Ruby said, “I can’t wait to try it, honey.”
“Ah, yes, but did you spend two days making it?” Trystan teased, pouring himself a glass of wine — a floral zest with a crisp aftertaste, exquisitely sweet and spirited. Emily elbowed him, playfully furrowing her brows.
“Anyways,” Ruby cleared her throat, “I’m so glad we’re finally home.”
“Agreed,” Luke plopped a grape into his mouth, “I don’t think I can ever handle being in a room with every Thorne again.”
Emily and Trystan shared an uneasy glance, silently unveiling mutual sorrow. Months have passed since their ungodly case in Trystan’s homeland, though the time spent there forever stained them. Emily’s mouth ran dry as Sebastyan’s and Vasili’s corpses rushed through her mind. The dagger tight in Vasili’s chest, the petrified eyes of Sebastyan as he died at the hands of another Thorne. Two ghosts clinging on their shoulders.
“It’s hard to believe our little stint in Drakovia is over,” Emily shook her head, “I wonder what our next big case is gonna be.”
“No more cheating husband cases for you?” Ruby asked, her brow cocked amusingly. Emily grinned with a mischievous shrug.
“As tempting as that sounds, I might need bigger fish to go after.” Trystan chuckled, splaying his hand on top of Emily’s.
“Drakovia has spoiled her. Good luck getting her to take the common cases again.”
“Do you think you’d ever look into…your dad’s murder?” Luke asked, almost nonchalantly. Ruby sent him a warning glance, lightly bumping his feet underneath the table. Trystan’s hands curled into Emily’s, solace in his eyes.
Emily gulped. Each time she debated looking into Jimmy’s death, there were far too many holes, far too many questions, and not enough evidence for her liking. Distant memories of bickering with Uncle Tommy and Trystan struck her, and she cringed at how horrible she became. Desperately hungry to solve the only question she had left. She refused to let her and Trystan turn into a pair of tectonic plates – subtly rubbing against each other, then drifting away forever. To not catch the death of a relationship until it’s already rotting, staining every moment with resentment and twisted words. Even the slightest possibility of another heartbreak sent her spiraling downwards.
“I’ve…thought about it,” she frowned, “One day, though.”
“One day.”
The heavy moment passed, and the Ginovesi crew - bar Malfada - began their feast. They all vehemently agreed, to Luke’s dismay, that Trystan’s duck was the clear winner. Luke’s shortcake was no match for the savory and crisp flavors of the traditional Drakovian dinner. Though his cake appeared light and fluffy, it was overly dense and oddly sour. Ruby’s cookies and Emily’s board tied for second place, both sweet and made with love. A blend of cookies framed like snowflakes, snowmen, Snoopy in Santa hats, and candy canes bunched together on a plate. The charcuterie board was a splendid still life, adorning moon drop grapes, saltine crackers, and sprigs of rosemary. Plates were stuffed and spirited laughs rang across the warmly-lit home.
“Good God!” Emily groaned, swallowing a bitter slice of Luke’s cake, “What the fuck did you put in this?”
Luke’s eyes widened, “Do you not like strawberries?”
“Try it yourself! I don’t even…” Emily spat out the remaining bits, nearly gagging.
Reluctantly, Luke cut himself a small serving. Trystan and Ruby cackled as his face turned red, spitting the remains onto a napkin.
“Jesus!” Luke shivered, “Okay–I think I know what happened.”
“What did you do?!”
“...I may have used salt instead of sugar.”
“Oh my God!” Trystan laughed, slapping his knee, “You are a horrible baker!”
“It-it’s not my fault!” Luke said sheepishly, throwing his hands in the air. Ruby snickered, patting his shoulder.
“Babe. You literally made the cake.”
Rounds of laughs echoed through the kitchen, contentment and joy present on the soft New York night. Blissful moments fell around them as heaps of snow tumbled down like raindrops, piling up minute by minute.
* * * *
Standing by the window sill, Emily’s eyes tracked the ebb and flow of snowfall. Faint Christmas tunes slipped through the window crack, presumably from the neighbor. She hummed delightedly, eyes shut at the still moment. Moonlight burst into the room, dimly lit and warm despite the glowing chill from the glass before her. The swell of nearby trumpets and saxophones and Earthly beauty brought her to ease.
“Don’t tell the others, Detective, but your charcuterie board was my favorite,” Trystan grinned, sitting beside her.
“Oh really?” Emily smirked, “Are you sure you’re not being biased?”
“Hm,” Trystan gave her a so-so gesture, “Definitely not.”
Cupping both sides of her face, Trystan’s pupils widened fondly. Emily turned slightly, kissing his palm.
“Your hands still smell like garlic!”
Trystan chuckled, sniffing his hand. Sure enough, the pungent odor attacked his nose. He shrugged it off, focused on the gruff detective.
“I love you, my little moon!”
“What the hell does that mean?”
“I don’t know! You’re a bit…glum. And very short.”
“I am 5’3, you tall shit!” Emily swatted his arm, “I would call you my ‘sun,’ but you’re more like a little dog.”
“What? How?”
“You follow me around all day. And listen to my orders – for the most part.”
“Not to ruin the moment,” Luke announced as he pointed to his phone, “There’s a snow squall warning. It’ll clear up tomorrow morning, but you guys will have to stay the night.”
“How fun!” Ruby squealed, “It’ll be like a sleepover! I’ll go get blankets so you two can sleep on the couch.”
She disappeared into the hallway closet, hunting for the thickest blankets and pillows possible. Luke cocked an eyebrow, unamused as Trystan and Emily sat on the couch across from him.
“So when you said you loved Ruby’s cookies you were lying?” He asked Trystan, crossing his arms in faux-anger. Trystan chuckled, unashamed.
“I did love Ruby’s cookies – they were phenomenal. Much better than your shortcake anyway,” He teased, “Emily’s just happened to be my favorite.”
“You two are such children,” Emily said, snorting. “I–”
Darkness surrounded them. The only light left was the waning candlelight on the kitchen table. Gusts of wind flickered from the cracked window, a biting chill creeping up on their skin. Concerned, Ruby poked her head out of the closet.
“Hot-diggity-daffodil!” Luke proclaimed, “I guess the power’s out, too.”
“We can see that, Luke.”  Ruby returned with a bundle of blankets. The crew settled in the living room, the window now shut, bottles of wine and lively candles by the coffee table. An easy silence shrouded the room, with only the croaking rats in the walls and the crackling candles to distract them. They all sipped the remains of the honeysuckle wine, sweetness trickling down their throats like candle wax melting onto the table.
“I have an idea,” Trystan cleared his throat, “It is a bit morbid, though.”
“What is it?” Ruby asked, curious.
“In Drakovia, we go around in circles asking certain…questions. Usually around New Year’s, but we’re in the middle of a snowstorm. It’s not like we have much else to do.”
“What type of questions?”
Trystan sat still, contemplating. An eerieness in his eyes, a peculiar tenacity about him. He flinched at the briefest second, then shrugged.
“If you were dying, how would you like to pass away? What would you like to have with you?”
Quietness surrounded them once more, their breaths slightly more tense and strained. Emily sat closer to Trystan instinctively, craning her head against his shoulder. The candles continued to wail, as Ruby cleared her throat with somberness in her eyes.
“I think…if we ever got one,” She glanced at Luke, “I’d like to have a little cat in my lap. And Luke to hold my hand. And maybe a cup of tea, but only in that calico-printed mug you got me for our anniversary.”
Luke wiped feeble tears from Ruby’s cheek, a rare solemness on his face. He grinned weakly, pressing a kiss on the side of her face. Ruby’s heart swayed in the lull air, her hand tight in his.
“I need Ruby next to me, laying by me. And I want it all to be quiet,” Luke murmured, “I don’t want to be able to hear anything. But I want there to be a window. So I can look up at the sky one more time. I don’t care if it’s day or night…that’s all I want.”
Silence lay steadily upon them, the croaking rats having vanished. The candles remained lit, embers mute and growing frail. Warmth bloomed between them, huddling closer together. The moon climbed further into the night sky, its silvery rays illuminating the apartment. Trystan fiddled with his fingers, as Emily’s hands rubbed circles around his legs. It was like muscle memory. Rituals and silly minuscule traditions became more familiar to the two of them with each passing month. Chopping garlic cloves, peeling oranges, collecting ugly trinkets.
“I’d want someone to play old Drakovian music…the songs my father showed me as a kid. And,” Trystan grinned at Emily, a smile so unabashedly bold and bare it nearly brought her to tears, “I want you to kiss my forehead. And rub my feet.”
Emily pecked the top of his head, her eyes burning as Diana’s kind words echoed in her mind. Trystan wiped away her tears, tenderness with every touch.
She was familiar with death. A one-sided friendship, a shadow lurking behind her with every step she took. It offered no hope and no excuses. The only things bereavement brought were ghostly memories and pearls from the past rolling in her hand, daring to be dropped. Her fingers trembled, her mouth dry as she urged herself to go on.
“I don’t want it to hurt,” Emily said finally, slightly panting, “Every single one of them died in pain. And alone. Sonja. Bethany. Nadja. Sebastyan. I don’t want it to be like that. I want to be ready. And...Trystan next to me.”
They all leaned against each other. The candles shined well into the night, fickle and bright. Empty wine bottles scented the room, warm and heady. Emily shut her eyes, picturing herself as a sleeping child being carried to bed after a long drive home. Laughter through the walls, the ticking of a nearby clock, soft jazz slipping through the window, a kiss on her cheek. Perhaps it’d be good to her. Just a brief second and all that’d remain was a tombstone with her name.
Emily unveiled her vision, the rest of her friends in tears. Trystan stroked her hair gently, still smiling. It was simple. It was clear.
“All we want is everything we have,” He said, their faces inches apart, “And I’m the richest man in the world.”
* * * *
Ruby and Luke shut their bedroom door, Emily and Trystan now alone on the couch. With her legs in his lap, he rested a hand on her thigh, tracing lazy circles. The candles had long died out, leaving only moonbeams and constellations to light up the room.
“Em?” Trystan whispered as Emily moved over to lie on his chest. She gazed into his argent eyes, exasperation clear on his face.
“Mhm?”
“Do you remember when I refused to go on that plane? All those months ago.” Emily snorted quietly, Trystan gliding his hands along her back.
“Of course I do. I knew you weren’t going to.”
“Do you remember what you said to me after that?”
“Mhm. I told you there’s a reason partners and romance don’t mix well. That it’s trouble waiting to happen.”
“And then I told you that I just so happen to like trouble.”
They smirked, noses crinkled and eyes bagged. Trystan cupped Emily’s chin, palms still smeared with the scent of garlic.
“I’m glad we’re partners.”
“I am too.”
* * * * A/N: Happy holidays, everyone! Thank you for reading this – I came up with this idea FOREVER AGO but was never able to execute it until now. I’ve always loved the idea of thinking of death, not as something to fear (though I still struggle with that), but rather as something that is just a little moment. That’s painful, and maybe not necessarily beautiful, but something that just happens organically. Like that one poem that’s like “I hope death is like being carried to your bedroom as a child.” I actually wrote a poem about that, if anyone would be interested in me posting it. Anyway – thank you again for reading!

A Inuyasha story for @choicesprompts and @choicesholidays Valentine Day event. This story is set in my Inuyasha modern day AU I did for @inuvember last year.
Kagome think back of how she got interested in her husband Inuyasha because, when they first meet as teenagers, he was a bad boy rebelling against the world and she thought a relationship with him would be interesting than the boring one she have with Hojo. Over the course of their relationship, Kagome found out that his bad boy personality was a way to deal with the death of his mother at a young age and it was leading him down a dangerous path has she not help him become a better man. The downside is Inuyasha lost most of that bad boy attitude when he become a husband, a businessman, and a father, but he did bring it out in the bed.

The Other Nevrakis - Christmas Party
Book - The Other Nevakis - TRR AU
Pairings - Drake x Lilith (OC), Liam x Riley
Word Count - 1,330
Warnings - language, drinking
I was inspired to write this fic from the @choicesholidays prompt: I’ve never been stabbed by an icicle before, and the edit that goes along with it is from the prompt: I’m so glad we found each other.
___________________________________________
Tumblr media
_____________________________________________________
It’s the night of Liam and Riley’s annual Christmas party. Not the formal one attended by every noble and dignitary in Cordonia, but a cozy gathering of their closest friends and family members.
Jingle Bell Rock plays quietly over the speakers, and Lilith and Riley are seated at the bar, both about 5 shots of tequila in.
“We need to take a picture!” Riley hiccups and giggles as she leans against her friend. “Max brought all these props and no one’s using them.. besides him, I mean.”
Lilith chuckles as her eyes land on Maxwell who is wearing an elf hat with a bell on the end, attempting to put a Santa hat on a protesting Bertrand.
“No thanks!” Lilith smirks. “I put on a pair of those stupid elf ears and I’ve just provided you with blackmail material.”
Riley places her hand over her heart and gasps. “Me?! You think I would blackmail my BFF?! “ Lilith raises an eyebrow skeptically and Riley laughs. “Ok maybe that one time when I wanted to borrow your Jimmy Choo’s and you wouldn’t let me, but never anything serious!”
“You were going to tell everyone that I can burp the alphabet! I don’t want anyone to know that! It’s humiliating!”
Riley cackles, leaning against the bar to steady herself. “It’s impressive! And it’s not like I was really gonna tell anyone!”
“Ya, ya..” Lilith rolls her eyes with a smile.
“I have an idea.” Riley nods across the room to where Liam and Drake are standing together, talking. “I bet I can convince Liam to dress up as Santa quicker than you can get Drake to. Winner gets to pick what we dress up as from Max’s prop box. ”
“Well duh, you’re gonna win!” Lilith shakes her head. “Liam literally does whatever you want, whenever you want!”
Riley bites her lip, watching her husband with a smirk. “He does, doesn’t he?”
“So you see, this isn’t a fair bet.”
“Then what would be fair?”
Lilith glances out the window, watching a light snowfall drift across the night sky. “Snowball fight.”
“Ha!” Riley laughs. “Against the woman who grew up in Lythikos surrounded by snow 24/7? How is that fair? You’ll annihilate me!”
“Sounds like you’re scared, Ri.”
Riley bites her cheek while she thinks. “Fine. Take two more shots of tequila, and then it’ll be fair.”
“Two more!? But we’ve both had the same amount!”
“Exactly. Everyone knows you have a higher tolerance than me.” Riley holds her hand out expectantly. “Soooo? Deal?”
Lilith knocks back two more shots and shakes Riley’s hand with a smirk. “Deal.”
______________________________________________________
The girls stagger slightly as they make their way outside into the snowy courtyard, grabbing their coats on the way. Lilith blinks her eyes slowly, her mind hazy from the tequila.
“So, howwe gonna do this?” Lilith slurs, shaking her head in an attempt to clear her thoughts.
Riley pulls out her phone and sets a timer for five minutes. “Whoever has been hit the most when time runs out, loses.” Riley smirks but wobbles, catching herself on a statue. “Whoa. Ok, ready…go!”
Lilith dashes across the courtyard, slides behind a tree, and begins balling up snow as quickly as possible to create a nice stash of ammo. She peers out from behind the brush, listening for any sound of Riley. With no sign of her, Lilith picks up a few snowballs and creeps through the snow, making her way from tree to tree for cover. She sees no footprints, noting that Riley must have gone along the concrete path. “Where is this bitch?” Lilith whispers and is immediately pelted in the back of the head with a freezing projectile. “Hey!”
Riley laughs maniacally and rushes away. “First blood! First blood!”
“You’re gonna pay for that!” Lilith bolts after Riley, hurling a snowball that quickly whiffs past Riley’s head, barely missing her, and exploding against the tree beside her.
“Oh my god, are you trying to take my head off?!” Riley squeals as she weaves between the trees with Lilith hot on her tail. After a minute, Riley pauses to lean against the tree, completely winded. When she turns around, Lilith is nowhere in sight.
Riley’s eyes dart around the courtyard, but thanks to the excess amount of tequila, everything feels as if it’s moving in slow motion. She pulls out her phone and checks the time with a grin. “You only have 15 seconds left! I win!!”
“That’s what you think.” Lilith appears from behind a tree holding a snowball in each hand. “Nowhere left to hide.”
Riley holds her hands up in surrender, a look of terror flashing across her face. “Why do you look like you want to murder me?!”
Lilith utters a sinister chuckle. “I win.”
Placing two snowballs in one hand, Lilith brings her arm back ready to deliver the winning blow, when a flash of something dives from her peripheral vision.
“Noooooo!” The snowballs smack square against the chest of the interloper as he screams.
“Liam!” Riley yells as he lands in the snow with a grunt. She kneels down over him and giggles. “You saved my life!”
Liam sits up and rubs his sore chest. “Oww, maybe literally! That snowball had an icicle in it!”
“Jesus Lil!” Drake appears next to her with a smirk. “Trying to assassinate the King and Queen with an icicle?”
“I didn’t know, I swear!” Lilith throws her hands over her mouth in shock.
Liam stands and dusts the snow off of himself with a chuckle. “I’ve never been stabbed by an icicle before. You’ve got quite an arm, Lilith!”
“I’m so sorry!” Lilith shakes her head. “I don’t know how that happened, for real!”
“Well.” Riley grins cockily. “I believe I win the snowball fight!”
Lilith scoffs. “You wouldn’t have if Liam hadn’t jumped in front of you like a damn superhero! How did you guys even know we were out here?”
Drake steps closer to Lilith, wrapping his arms around her to help her get warm. “A couple of Riley’s guards told us that there was a drunken snowball fight going on outside, and we might want to check on you.”
“What was going on out here was my glorious victory!” Riley boasts with a cheeky grin. “I beat a Nevrakis in a snowball fight! This is the best day ever!”
Lilith rolls her eyes. “I’m pretty sure Liam intercepting the snowball is technically cheating.”
“Look, I’m too cold to argue. We’ll forgive you for the icicle and just call it even,” Riley says through her chattering teeth as she pulls Liam close. “Now let's get inside because I’m fricking freezing!”
Liam and Drake help their shivering, inebriated partners back inside the palace and help them get cleaned up, returning to the party just in time for karaoke.
As Leo saunters on stage and begins singing Santa Baby, Riley takes Lilith’s hand and leads her to the prop box. “Now, what am I gonna pick for you to wear in the photo?”
“Uh, no way! Outside, you said we would call it even.” Lilith crosses her arms.
“Did I?” Riley taps her cheek with a smirk. “Ok, fine. We’ll just go up and do some karaoke. Actually Lilith, why don’t you get up there and share your amazing talent of singing the ABC’s by burpi-.”
Lilith throws her hand over Riley’s mouth, narrowing her eyes. “You are the worst!”
Riley grins widely, passing Lilith a pair of reindeer antlers, which she snatches  and puts on begrudgingly. “I hate you.”
“No you don’t! You love me.” Riley pokes Lilith in the side wiggling her finger, and Lilith swats her hand away with a chuckle.
“Fine. But if I take this pic you have to promise not to hold that over my head ever again! Because you know damn well I have plenty of dirt on you.”
“Deal.” Riley bumps Lilith’s shoulder with a smile. “Now, put those paws up little reindeer, and say cheese!”

(this awesome poster is the handiwork of our wonderful host @sazanes!!)
Note: So sorry for the delay in getting this out!! IRL has been a little tricky these days.
It gives us great joy to announce our third edition of the Hana Lee Appreciation Week!!
This year we are holding the AW around World Book Day (23rd April) in honour of Hana's passionate, long-lasting love for books!
Hana is talented at a great number of things, but is passionate about just a few. One is music - the other is reading. It was originally a hobby her parents introduced her to, to gain an advantage as a noblewoman, but Hana grew to love it far beyond what her parents expected. Her fondness for Jane Bennett in Pride and Prejudice, her delightful rebellions in secretly reading Wuthering Heights and manhuas, her adorable habit of leaving sweet notes behind, between the pages of a library book. Her love for books has deep and wonderful, and allowed her a window into worlds she didn't even realize existed!
But books and reading aren't our only themes for this AW! Take a look at our theme list for what we plan to do for each day:
April 21st - Character Appreciation/Throwback
April 22nd - Flowers/Fashion Design
April 23rd - Bookworm/AU
April 24th - Competitive Hana!/Culinary Love/Music
April 25th - Family/Friendship/Romance
This event will be held from April 21st to 25th. Any content is welcome, as long as it is Hana-centric and shows a positive depiction of her! Fanfic, fanart, meta, edits, moodboards, playlists, headcanons, interactive media - even simple appreciation posts and screenshots of fave scenes will be great!
It isn't absolutely necessary to post content only on the day of the theme! We often accept pieces even when sent on a later date, and also keep a bonus week in case you couldn't finish your pieces during the week. We also don't mind WIPs, so if you have one that is Hana-focused... we'd LOVE to see it!! We also love throwback pieces, so if you have any that you made previously, do reblog them and tag us!
We also will be accepting pieces after the event is over, and all year round until the next HLAW! So even if you have your post ready much later, please don't hesitate to tag us! 🤗

All I Want for Christmas Part 2
Series: Cordonian Royal Airlines
Fandom: The Royal Romance
Pairings for series: Various
Pairing for this chapter: Riley x Drake, Liam x Max
Word Count: 2,848
Rating: General
Warnings for this chapter: none
Submissions: @choicesprompts rewrite challenge, holiday edition TRR x Untamed Heart (one of my all-time favorite movies). @choicesficwriterscreations holiday prompt: Stuck together in the snow; @choicesdecember2023 Christmas and @choicesholidays: This is the worst/best Christmas ever.
A/N: So the end of this is based very loosely on a scene from Untamed Heart. I looked for a clip of the scene in question but couldn't find one. You'll have to trust me that this is one of the most underrated movies of all time. If you've never seen it, you should look it up and watch it.
Tumblr media
“Hey, you okay?”
“What?” Riley glanced up in surprise, wiping the wetness from her face with the palm of her hand, “I’m fine.”
“Hm.” Drake grunted as he pulled out a chair and sat down without waiting for an invitation. “You don’t look fine.”
She tried to laugh and cry at the same time and the sound came out as a little hiccup, “Sorry, it’s just Christmas Eve, you know?”
“Yeah….” He said carefully, reluctant to reveal that he didn’t know, not really. He had a mother and a sister, but he wasn’t close to either one. “So, you had plans, I take it?”
“Of course! Every year we all go to my parents’ house for Christmas. My brother Ryder and his wife and kids, my sister Amelia and her fiancé, and my brother Jory will be home from school, and this is Declan’s last year at home before he goes off to university…. I’ll be the only one not there this year….”
“So, you’re close to your siblings?” He set the bottle and glass on the table between them and gestured toward it. “Drink?”
She shook her head. “No thanks. And yes, I’m very close to my siblings and my parents.”
“Would you like something else? I’ll buy you a drink. You can tell me about your siblings.”
“I wouldn’t say no to an amaretto sour…”
An hour later, she looked up to find him smiling at her softly. She flushed as she realized she had been dominating the conversation. “I’m so sorry! I’m just rambling on and on about myself and my family! Tell me about yours!”
“Nah,” he waved her off, “There’s not much to tell. I’d rather hear about yours. Your brother Jory sounds hilarious. Declan should definitely dump that guy, and I agree with Max about your sister. It sounds like she takes your love and support for granted.”
“Max and Amelia have never gotten along,” Riley said with a sigh.
“You’ve known Max for a long time, huh?”
“Since we were teenagers. He’s the one that talked me into becoming a flight attendant and got me this job.”
“You didn’t want to be a flight attendant?”
She shrugged as she pulled her drink closer to her and toyed with the rim, “I was deep in my I don’t know what I want to be when I grow up phase.”
“And now?”
“I like it. I don’t know if it’s what I want to do forever, but it’s really fun for right now. I have no complaints.”
The tension that had set in his back and shoulders at the thought of her quitting eased out of him as he relaxed back into his chair. “As airline jobs go, this is about as good as it gets.”
“You’re not wrong.” Not only did the private airline pay better than commercial airlines, but there were many perks from more flexible schedules to stipends for living expenses while traveling and generous bonuses. But the biggest benefit was getting to work with her best friend. All in all, she really couldn’t complain. “Thanks, Drake.”
“For what?”
“Taking the time to sit here and cheer me up. You didn’t have to do that. I’m sure you have plenty of things you’d rather be doing than listening to me go on and on about my family.”
He scoffed as he looked away from her and lifted his glass to his mouth. “I really don’t.” He was estranged from his family, single, and his only real friend was Liam. All of which was usually fine with him. He preferred it that way honestly, seeing himself as a lone wolf. Community and togetherness were overrated. He needed very little to be happy.
Something about this girl made him want more, though, and the feeling unsettled him.
“Well, at any rate, thank you,” she yawned, “but I should probably get back up to my room.”
“Oh, yeah, sure,” he glanced at his watch as he stumbled to his feet, “Me too. I’ll walk you up.”
The look she gave him sent butterflies exploding through his chest and he quickly clarified, “For safety, you know.”
“Right,” she nodded in agreement, but the smile that played across her lips said she understood exactly what was going on between them.
Good thing one of them did.
Entering the elevator, he reached out and pressed the button for the twelfth floor. He turned his head to find her giving him a measuring look. “What?”
“I didn’t tell you what floor I was on. How did you know?”
His eyes widened as he stared at her like a deer caught in the headlights. He had never felt so much panic surge through his body at one time and he had flown into combat zones before leaving the military for the private sector. His scotch-laden brain struggled to come up with a response that didn’t include telling her he had asked Liam what floor she was staying on. “Max must have mentioned it.” He mumbled.
“When did you talk to Max?”
He was saved from answering when her phone vibrated, and she quickly answered a text from one of her brothers. He heaved out a sigh of relief and changed the subject. “So, what do you like best about Christmas other than your family? The presents?”
“No,” she laughed, “The tree and decorations. There’s just something so peaceful about the lights and ornaments. Waking up to my mom’s ham and cheese omelets for Christmas breakfast. Oh, and I love the music!”
“Yeah? What’s your favorite Christmas song?”
“Jingle Bell Rock,” she replied without hesitation. “I know it’s not the most popular, or sentimental, but I love the beat and I love horses, so there you go. What’s yours?”
“Mine? Oh, no, I don’t have-“
“Come on, Drake, you have to have a favorite Christmas song!”
“Okay, okay, if you put a gun to my head then I guess I’d say it’s Do They Know It’s Christmas.”
Her mouth fell open. “Really?”
“Yeah, really, why is that surprising?”
“I don’t know. I figured you for a Rocking Around the Christmas Tree kind of guy. Why is Do They Know It’s Christmas your favorite?”
“I don’t know,” he jostled his body weight from foot to foot as he silently willed the elevator to hurry the fuck up, “I think it’s the juxtaposition of mindless consumerism with the destitution of impoverished peoples. It makes you think. Or it should.”
“Wow, Drake. You have hidden depths. I knew it!”
He arched an eyebrow at her. “You think about my depths?”
It was Riley’s turn to flush as she spun her body back to face the doors just as they dinged open. “Well, here we are!”
He saw her safely to her door in a silence that suddenly felt comfortable and right, as if him walking her to her door was a normal, everyday occurrence.
She opened the door and looked back over her shoulder, “Thank you again….for everything.”
“I should be thanking you for saving me from drinking alone. See you tomorrow, Riley.”
“See you tomorrow, Drake. Merry Christmas.”
“Merry Christmas,” he said as her door closed.
He stood outside her door for a long moment as he talked himself out of knocking on it and asking her to let him in.
Relationships with co-workers never ended well. He would know.
He turned and started trudging back down the hallway toward the elevator when he was seized by a sudden inspiration. Whipping his phone from his pocket, his fingers flew over the keyboard as his pace quickened and he hurried briskly back to his room, a smile of anticipation curving up his lips.
***
The next morning, Riely rolled out of bed and pulled the curtains open to see the area blanketed in freshly fallen snow, but it was all on the ground. Nothing fell from the clear blue sky.
With a squeal of joy, she bounced back to the bed to grab her phone from the nightstand, preparing to call Liam and ask if they had a takeoff time and then Max to find out how things had gone with Liam the night before, but before she could dial either number, it vibrated in her hand. She glanced down to see a text message in the group chat Liam had created yesterday when he invited everyone to dinner. It was from Drake.
Meet me in the Mountain Vista conference room.
That was odd, but okay. She quickly dressed and hurried out into the hallway, bumping into Max as she did so. “Were you waiting outside my door?”
“I was about to knock! I guess you got the text from Drake?”
“Yeah, but it’s weird, right? I mean, his entire contribution to the group chat yesterday was the word okay. And not even the whole word, just the two letters O.K.”
“I don’t know, but I hope it involves food! Come on, let’s go!”
When they arrived at the lower-level conference room, Max pulled the door open, and Riley walked into a stunning surprise.
Christmas finery draped the entire room. A six-foot tree adorned the center of the raised stage at the front of the room, fully decorated, complete with an angel on top. There were gift-wrapped packages under the tree. Christmas music spilled out of the speakers and a buffet table lined the far wall. She turned in circles, taking in the decorations everywhere, her mouth agape, “What is all this?”
“Uh…” Drake rubbed the back of his neck sheepishly. “Nothing. I mean it is Christmas! Just thought you- um, just thought everyone could use a little Christmas cheer this morning.”
“You did all this?”
“Yeah…”
“Drake, it’s amazing! But why? Don’t get me wrong, I’m not complaining at all, but there’s a Christmas tree in the lobby.”
“I know, but that’s just a generic hotel tree for everybody. I thought you deserved something a little more personal.”
She stared up at him with wide eyes. “You did all this for me?”
“I mean….for all of us,” he declared hurriedly, turning away so she wouldn’t see the red coloring his cheeks. “I even managed gifts.” He plucked a package out from under the tree and held it out to her. “Don’t get too excited, they’re just t-shirts from the hotel gift shop. I got one for each of us.”
Riley watched as Drake tossed one to Liam, who had entered the room just behind them, and then Max. He kept the last one for himself. “Hope they fit.”
“How the hell did you accomplish all this?” A tinge of awe colored Liam’s voice.
Drake lifted his shoulder. “I just made a few phone calls and had things delivered.”
“They delivered all this in a snowstorm?” Max gaped at him.
“Well, the blizzard is over,” Drake scoffed, gesturing out the plate-glass windows along the side of the room. “This is just a lot of snow.”
“Ah, you missed your family today, too!” Riley gave him a sympathetic smile.
“Yeah.” Drake agreed as he turned his head to avoid the sharp look Liam gave him. “We should eat while this is still hot.”
“Ohhhh,” Max rubbed his hands together, “Good idea! It smells delicious!”
Drake followed behind Riley and Max toward the food. Liam sidled up next to him and lowered his voice so no one else could hear, “You never spend Christmas with your family.”
“What? Yeah, no, that’s….. you like waffles, right? Because I ordered waffles.”
“Oh, my god!” Riley exclaimed, “Ham and cheese omelets!”
“And bacon,” Max pointed out. “Don’t forget the bacon. Oh! And crepes!”
Her gaze slid thoughtfully to Drake as Max loaded his plate. “Did you order this because of what I told you last night?”
“Order what?” Drake shook his head as he reached for a plate. “I just asked for food. Lucky coincidence.”
“Okay.” She gave him an appraising look. He avoided direct eye contact with her.
The group sat down at a table near the center of the room and enjoyed breakfast together. Riley bit into a forkful of fluffy eggs, melted cheese, savory ham, and crisp onions as she took in the comforting twinkle of Christmas lights reflecting off red and gold ornaments. Max was already wearing the shirt Drake had given him and a Santa hat that he had produced from seemingly nowhere. All of it was set against the backdrop of sheer whiteness that could be seen through the conference room windows. Every ice-covered tree, bush and light post sparkled in the bright morning sun. A sense of peace and contentment that she hadn’t expected to feel on this particular morning settled over her as the group ate and laughed together.
Her phone rang. “It’s my mom!” she answered and after several tearful exchanges of I love you, I miss you and Merry Christmas, she addressed the group, “My mom wants to say hi to everyone.” She placed the phone in the middle of the table and pushed the speaker button so Catherine Brooks could wish the entire flight crew a Merry Christmas. “And especially you, Drake!” she gushed. “Riley told me about the tree and decorations. Thank you for making the day special for her. You’re a good friend.”
“I’m glad she liked it. I just thought we could all use a pick me up since everyone is missing the day with their family,” he lied. The truth was, he couldn’t stand to see her sad. The smile that had washed over her face and stayed there since she had first walked into the conference room made every bit of effort and expense he had gone to more than worth it.
Not that he was interested in her. He didn’t get involved with co-workers.
“Well, nevertheless, thank you and if you’re ever in our neck of the woods, we would love to meet you!”
“Ah…sure, that would be…all right…”
Drake was rescued by Max, who leaned over the phone to yell “I love you!” and “Merry Christmas!” at Riley’s family.
When every member of the Brooks family had spoken to both Riley and Max and the call was finally over, Liam looked up from his own phone and announced, “Great news…we can fly out now!”
“I almost don’t want to.” Max blurted out and then flushed from the tip of his nose all the way down to his toes. “I mean….I just meant this is nice, and it’s warm in here….”
“It’s okay, Max,” Liam grinned at him, “This has been nice, but we do need to get back home. If we don’t make it back today, we’ll have to reschedule tomorrow’s flight, and then I’ll have to deal with Madeleine and her bullshit.”
Drake shuddered. “Why the fuck did Leo give her part ownership again?”
“He didn’t give it to her,” Liam shook his head as he returned his phone to his pocket, “the judge in their divorce did.”
“Still. She acts like her twenty-five percent is controlling interest or something.”
“Tell me about it.” Liam was not overly fond of his ex-sister-in-law, but he couldn’t deny that she was skilled with the parts of the business he disliked, such as accounting and marketing. He just wanted to fly; and Madeleine taking over those parts, had allowed him to do exactly that.
“Well, I guess we should all go pack then,” Max headed toward the door, “You coming, Riley?”
“In a minute. You go on. And you’re still coming home with me today, right?”
“Bert won’t be home until tomorrow, so yes.”
Liam hurried across the room. “Hold on, Max, I’ll walk up with you!”
Riley and Drake watched them leave, then turned to each other. They stood silent and unmoving for a long moment in the middle of the Christmas finery, eyes searching eyes, unspoken emotions playing across both faces.
She took a step forward, “Drake…”
He caught her hand in his as she reached out for him. “Riley…we can’t…”
“And yet you did all this.”
“I’m sorry. It’s not you. It’s me.” He brought her hand to his lips and kissed the back of her fingers, then quickly dropped it. “Merry Christmas.”
“Merry Christmas, Drake, and thank you. Really. It means a lot to me.” She leaned in, went up on her tiptoes and placed a soft kiss on his cheek before whispering in his ear, “Don’t worry, I won’t tell anyone that you’re a gooey, mushy marshmallow on the inside. Your reputation is safe.”
A short laugh escaped him as she stepped away. He watched her walk to the door with a sinking feeling in the pit of his stomach that was at odds with the soaring feeling in his chest.
She liked him, right?
Not that it mattered. It was a bad idea to get involved with a co-worker.
As she slipped out the door, panic sliced through his being as he realized that he was involved.
He was very involved.
He heaved a sigh that was full of both resignation and wonder as he made his way back to his room to pack.

It’s Karaoke Night in Cordonia. Everyone is drunk. Riley tips her glass back, finishing off her bourbon-laced eggnog, and then makes her way to the stage.
Standing in front of the audience she adjusts her Santa hat and smooths down the festive green miniskirt that shows her legs off to amazing effect. She takes the microphone in her hand and gives a provocative smile first to Liam, and then to Drake.
She’s buzzed but not falling down drunk, so she gives a fairly decent and downright sultry rendition of Mariah Carey’s All I Want For Christmas while winding her way through the audience.
Stopping in front of Liam first, she runs a hand down the curve of his face as she leans into him, putting her cleavage in his direct line of vision.
Stepping out of his personal space just as he reaches for her, she sashays over to Drake and runs her fingers through his hair before dipping down and back up quickly, brushing the side of his arm with her breasts in the process.
Drake remains frozen in his seat as she dances her way through the rest of the room and retakes the stage, replacing the microphone as the song ends. She smiles and waves in response to the applause.
Liam smiles at Leo: She’s definitely into me, right?
Leo, eyes flick to Drake and back: Uh….well….I don’t know…
Liam: Oh, come on! You saw that, right? She was all over me!
Leo, doubtfully: Uh-huh…
Madeleine: She’s definitely into Drake.
Kiara: Non! She’s into Liam!
Penelope: As long as she’s not into Max….
Madeleine and Kiara: Shut up, Penelope!
Leo: Hey, Walker! What’s up with you and-
Drake leaps to his feet: Gotta go! To the…uh…bathroom! Yeah, bye!
Drake bolts out of the room as Max leans toward Hana and lowers his voice: Who was she singing to?
Hana, pressing her lips in a tight line: What the fuck do they have that I don’t? I mean besides di-
Max, patting Hana on the shoulder: Okay, good talk!
Riley returns to her seat and notices everyone staring at her: What?

A Princess for a Prince
As they finished breakfast, Aunt Bethany glanced at Sophie with a knowing smile. “Sophie, I believe that Prince Liam left a message for you earlier this morning, my dear.”
Beaumont Estate, Duchy of Ramsford
Sophie's heart skipped a beat. “Oh, oh ... thank you, Auntie.” She excused herself from the table, her steps quickening as she made her way to the study where the message awaited her. A sealed envelope with the royal Insignia sat elegantly on the desk. With trembling fingers, Sophie broke the seal and then unfolded the letter.
Liam’s elegant handwriting greeted her:
‘Dearest Sophie,
I hope this morning finds you well and that the memories of last night’s ball linger as fondly in your heart as they do in mine. Your grace and beauty illuminated the ballroom, and I found myself enchanted by every moment we shared.
I would be honored if you would join me at the New Year’s Eve ball at the palace. The evening promises dancing, champagne and a fireworks extravaganza. I can think of no better company than yours to enjoy the splendor and ring in the New Year.
Yours sincerely, Liam’
Sophie’s cheeks flushed with excitement and a hint of optimism. She folded the letter gently, holding it close to her heart. She quickly composed a response, expressing her eagerness to join him for the Ball.
With her heart aflutter, Sophie entrusted the letter to the awaiting palace messenger, requesting it to be delivered directly to Prince Liam’s chambers. Beaming, she made her way upstairs to her room to start planning for the event.
December 31st, Cordonian Royal Palace
The entire palace and grounds were adorned with sparkling, opulent decorations; the air felt energized with excitement. The chandeliers in the ballroom cast a warm glow across the room as the orchestra played holiday melodies. Waitstaff circulated with flutes of champagne, as nobles enjoyed sumptuous gourmet platters of hors d’oeuvres.
Entering the ballroom with her aunt, Maxwell, Bertrand and Savannah, Sophie glanced around the room. She spotted Liam very quickly, resplendent in his royal attire, engaging in conversation with Leo and Madeleine. When his eyes caught hers, he smiled delightedly, and excused himself from the conversation to make his way across the dance floor to Sophie.
Liam’s eyes sparkled as he approached her with an appreciative smile. Sophie, wearing a stunning deep purple gown that shimmered in the candlelight, returned his smile blithely and dipped into a low curtsy. Her gown, embellished with delicate lace with intricate beadwork, accentuated her curves perfectly. With a tender smile, he leaned in, closing the gap between them, softly kissing her cheek.
“Good evening, Sophie,” Liam greeted her with a charming smile, “You look even more beautiful in candlelight.” Lifting her hand for a kiss, he then pulled her close to whisper in her ear, “...and you shouldn’t curtsy, it’s just me.”
“Good evening, Liam. Thank you for inviting me.” Sophie replied, her voice tinged with excitement. The air crackled with anticipation. Sophie responded to his request with a breathy whisper, “I will remember that always.”
Offering his arm, Sophie slipped her hand around his arm and joined him to move onto the dance floor, finding a spot in the center.
Liam placed one hand on the small of Sophie’s back, the other holding her hand. She stepped into his arms, and they began to move to the music.
“You look beautiful tonight, Sophie,” Liam whispered in her ear.
“Thank you. You look quite dashing yourself.” Sophie responded shyly.
As the orchestra transitioned into a waltz, they began to move effortlessly across the dance floor, their chemistry evident in every step. Their conversation flowed seamlessly as they danced and the world around them seemed to fade as they lost themselves in each other’s company, their laughter blending with the music in perfect harmony.
Dancing the Cordonian waltz, Sophie’s gown flared and billowed as Liam twirled her under his arm. As he pulled her back to his chest, she rested her head back, enjoying the feel of his arms around her in an intimate embrace.
As the night progressed and the countdown to midnight drew near, the energy in the room heightened. The air buzzed with excitement, and the guests gathered awaiting the grand moment.
Maxwell and his mother stopped by the open terrace to wait for the fireworks show as Bertrand and Savannah joined in with the celebrations on the dance floor.
Sophie found herself standing beside Liam as the final seconds of the year ticked away. As Leo and Madeleine stood with the herald to announce the countdown. The ballroom erupted into cheers and applause as the clock struck midnight, marking the start of 2024.
Amidst the celebrations, Liam turned to Sophie, his eyes filled with warmth and determination. In that fleeting moment between the past and the future, amidst the cheers and revelry, he took her hand and whispered, “May I steal a moment with you, away from the crowd?”
Sophie’s heart fluttered as she nodded, following him as they made their way to a secluded third floor balcony overlooking the palace gardens. The night sky was filled with fireworks, with vibrant colors against the dark backdrop of the night sky.
As the echoes of fireworks lingered in the air, their eyes locked in a shared understanding; a silent acknowledgement of the unspoken emotions that had bloomed between them over the past year. Liam gently cupped Sophie’s face in his hands, his touch tender and filled with a depth of emotion as the world around them disappeared. It was just the two of them.
“Sophie,” he whispered, his voice a soft caress in the quiet night. “This past year has been a revelation, and I find myself drawn to you in ways I never thought possible. Your laughter, your kindness, and your grace have captured my heart.”
The air was charged with an unspoken electricity as Sophie gazed into Liam’s eyes, feeling her heart flittering with a mixture of excitement and a tender vulnerability. She could sense the depth of his sincerity, his words stirring something profound within her. “Liam, I feel the same about you.”
In that fleeting moment, as the world seemed to stand still, their lips met in a gentle and tender kiss. It was a kiss filled with the promise of a new beginning; an unspoken vow to explore the budding romance that had blossomed between them.
As they parted, their breaths mingling in the cool night air, Sophie’s cheeks flushed with a rosy hue, and Liam’s gaze held a warmth that mirrored the newfound connection between them. Taking her hands in his, Liam pulled her closer to him as he lowered his head to re-capture her lips. Moving one hand to her waist as the other cupped her cheek as he deepened the kiss.
The kiss spoke volumes, conveying feelings that words could not quite capture. Their shared hopes, fears, and the uncharted territories of their hearts that they were daring to explore together.
As Liam and Sophie looked up into the night sky, and more fireworks shot up to celebrate the new year, their eyes met once again.
Liam’s smile was tender. "We finally have a chance to spend some time alone," he said, squeezing her hand, pulling her even closer. As their lips met once again, Sophie felt more butterflies in her stomach. She was nervous but excited. She knew Liam was experienced, and she wanted to make sure she did everything right. She trusted him and was ready to take their relationship to the next level.
Liam kissed her passionately, his tongue exploring her mouth. She melted into his embrace, her body responding to his touch. He pulled back, his blue eyes meeting hers.
"You're so beautiful," he said, running his fingers through her long mahogany tresses.
She smiled shyly, his words making her blush.
He cupped her face with his hands, kissing her softly, his lips lingering on hers. He traced his tongue along her neck, nibbling her earlobe. She moaned softly, his touch sending shivers down her spine.
She could feel his growing desire pressing against her, his hardness against her softness.
“Liam!” Sophie’s voice was full of laughter and warning as she pushed away, her heart pounding. “We’re not alone, you know.”
“I can’t see anyone else around here.” Liam chuckled.
“That does not mean there isn’t anyone watching. We don’t want to give your guards any concerns, do we?”
“Liam sighed. “You are right, of course. But ... ”
Sophie looked up at him, raising an eyebrow, “But what?”
“Let me make this more private.” Taking her hand, he tugged her hand to walk down the long corridor, Liam turned to lead Sophie into an empty parlor. After locking the doors and closing the heavy drapes, Liam led Sophie to sit on a large sofa.
“Now,” Liam whispered, “where were we?”
“I think you were telling me about your gua...”, Liam moved in quickly to secure her lips in another passionate kiss. His passion was clear as he sat down beside Sophie. The two of them got lost in the moment as Liam pulled her onto his lap.
“Liam, I ...” Sophie began. She wanted to explain that she was unexperienced but wanted to learn more with him.
“Sshh ... No more talking,” he whispered as he closed the distance between them.
Sophie nodded, wrapping her arms around his neck, savoring the feel of his strong arms around her.
Liam gently removed the pins that secured her hair. Her curls cascaded over his hands like silk, and he buried his face in her perfumed tresses. He kissed her earlobe, then her throat. His lips moved lower, to her collarbone, while his hand gently caressed her neck and shoulder.
Sophie was breathing faster now. She tilted her head back, encouraging him to continue his exploration of her skin. Her eyelids fluttered closed, and a tiny moan escaped her.
"Sophie, there's something I've been meaning to tell you," Liam paused, his heart beating rapidly.
"What is it?" Sophie asked, her voice slightly questioning.
"I am falling in love with you," Liam whispered, his voice full of emotion.
Sophie gasped, her eyes filling with tears. "Oh Liam, I love you," she replied, her voice shaky.
"You do?" Liam asked, his face lighting up.
"Yes," Sophie replied, her smile mirroring his.
“Sometimes, being with you feels so much like a dream ... and I don’t ever want to wake up.”
Liam cupped her face with his hands and kissed her passionately. "You have made me the happiest man in the world tonight," he said, his eyes shining with love.
Sophie beamed up at him, her heart full of happiness. She had never expected to fall in love with a prince, and now, she could not imagine her life without him.
Liam pulled her into his arms, “I don’t want this night to end,” his lips brushing her ear.
“Me neither,” Sophie admitted, her heart pounding.
“Maybe it doesn't have to,” Liam said, his voice low and husky.
“What do you mean?” Sophie asked, her eyes widening.
“Well, there’s no reason we can’t stay here a little longer. The party will go on for hours, No one will miss us.”
“But, Liam, we can’t just disappear together,” Sophie protested, even though her body was already responding to the suggestion.
"Why not? No one would know where we are," Liam pointed out, his hand stroking her back.
"They might guess," Sophie said, her breath catching in her throat as Liam's hand slid lower.
"Let them," Liam murmured, kissing her neck.
"We shouldn't," Sophie whispered, even as she tilted her head to allow him better access.
"You're right, we shouldn't," Liam agreed, his lips moving down to her collarbone.
"We shouldn't," Sophie repeated weakly, her eyes closing as Liam's mouth found the spot on her neck that drove her wild.
"No, we really shouldn't," Liam said, his voice muffled against her skin.
Sophie's last resistance melted away as Liam's slipped his tongue into her mouth in search of hers in an all encompassing kiss.
Sophie's last resistance melted away as Liam's tongue plunged into her mouth, just as Liam's phone pinged with a message.
Sitting back, Liam pulled his phone out of his pocket and read the message from Maxwell.
‘Sorry to interrupt, but we're getting concerned about your whereabouts.'
Liam sighed. "Maxwell thinks we need to get back."
"We could say we got lost," Sophie suggested, her hand sliding down Liam's back.
"And what? Stay lost for the rest of the evening?" Liam chuckled.
"Well, maybe not for the rest of the evening."
"I wish," Liam said, regretfully.
Reluctantly, they made their way back to the ballroom, their bodies still humming with desire as they walked hand-in-hand.
As they approached the doorway, Liam turned to Sophie and grinned. "How about we plan another escape for next weekend?"
"I like the sound of that," Sophie replied, grinning.

Marguerite’s Halloween Bacchanalia, Part II
With a death unveiled, will Emily and the rest of the Ginovesi agency find out who the murderer is?
Characters: Trystan Thorne x Emily Rose
WC: 2.9k
R: Teen | CW: Descriptions of a Dead Body, Knife Fight
A/N: Finally, here’s part 2! Hope you enjoy it, and have a happy Halloween!
Tumblr media
Emily stood in silence. It took her a while to recall exactly who the man was, but quickly enough, the memories from when The Drunk Tank was robbed ran through her mind.
“How?”
“He was stabbed,” Olivia sighed, “in his cell.”
It’s always fucking stabbings, Emily thought. A ghostly moment crept up on her. Her father’s limp hands clinging onto hers, the walls of Box Thirty-Two closing in on her, a pool of blood reaching her feet. Shaking her head, Emily looked back to the night sky.
“And?”
“Police think he got in a fight with another prisoner. But do you believe that?”
Emily scoffed.
“The police are fucking idiots,” she shook her head, “if that’s what they think happened to the loan shark who had ties with the mafia, then...I don’t know. I don’t know. I arrested him and those Russian assholes last year and that was it. I don’t know anything else.”
“Do you know Viola Scarlotti?”
The hair on Emily’s neck prickled, a shiver running down her shoulders.
“He mentioned her before the cops took him away. You think that’s who killed him?”
Olivia shrugged, a curiosity in her eyes.
“Maybe. And maybe...you should look into it.”
“I’ll think about it. Thank you, Olivia.”
A beat passed. Emily stared at the mass of trees in front of her, tall and plump strands of green separating her and every guest from the rest of civilization.
“I think you should go back to the party, Detective,” Olivia said, a fierceness in her voice.
“Yeah. I think I should.”
Olivia patted her arm, a warmth spreading onto her skin.
“I’ll be in touch.”
Closing the door behind her, Emily’s heart ached. It had been a few weeks since she returned from Drakovia, and the detective wondered to herself what the following months would bring. Was she ready for a new case? Not only that, but a case that might have connections to her past — to her father.
Shrugging it off, Emily glanced across the room. From afar, she spotted Trystan chatting with Aislinn and her group of friends. Emily marched over to the crowd, Olivia’s words replaying in her head.
“Hey,” Emily murmured as she linked one of her arms with his, “Have you seen Malfada and Uncle Tommy?”
“They’re over there,” Trystan pointed to a nearby table, “are you okay?” He asked, looking at Emily’s lips as they quivered.
“I need to tell you all something,” She whispered, “come with me.”
The two went off, walking to the table where they sat. Shooting them a tipsy glance, Uncle Tommy handed both Emily and Trystan a glass of whiskey. She shook her head, putting the cup back on the table.
“Niko Borodin is dead,” Emily blurted out, “the guy who robbed your bar? He was stabbed in his cell.”
Malfada and Tommy stared at each other, conspiracies running through their minds. Trystan sat down beside them, taking in the news.
“Holy shit,” Trystan said, his pupils going wide. “You just found out?”
Emily nodded.
“Do the police have any leads?” Malfada asked, still staring at Tommy. Emily shrugged.
“They just think it was from another prisoner. But I was thinking-”
“Big V,” Tommy uttered, running his hands over his head.
“What do you think, Malfada?”
The woman was in deep thought, her brain wired with thousands of questions, and so far, no answers. She and Tommy both knew the Scarlotti’s and their power. She knew that Big V, or one of her ‘helpers,’ could easily kill some loan shark and leave the crime scene without a trace. But why The Butcher?
“He definitely had ties with the Scarlotti’s,” Malfada said. “It’s a possibility. We can start looking into it tomorrow. Not right now, tomorrow.”
Emily nodded, a tingle of impatience rising through her body. Trystan put a hand on her shoulder, his touch lending her muted comfort.
“Emily,” Trystan gave her a weak smile, “Why don’t you come with me for a bit?”
Following him, Trystan led her to the pastry table. Grabbing a tiny plate, he glanced at Emily as a million different feelings went through her.
“How are you feeling?” He asked, using a tong to grab two pieces of belladi.
“I don’t know. A lot? I feel a lot.”
“Do you think it might be...connected to your Dad?” Emily gulped, her lips curling into a pout.
“I...don’t know. It might be, but I don’t want to get my hopes up.”
“I understand,” Trystan said, Nadja’s corpse on his bedroom floor in his mind. “Well then, my darling…would you like some belladi?”
“Of course!” Emily smiled, sniffing the steamy scone dusted with sugar. She took a bite, the gooey chocolate melting in her mouth.
Chuckling, Trystan stared at her lips, a dab of chocolate at the corner of her mouth.
“You’ve got a little something right…”
“Where?” Emily asked obliviously, her fingers running over her cheek.
“You’re hopeless. Allow me…” Trystan leaned in closer to her, running his thumb over the curve of her lips, wiping the chocolate off.
“I love you,” Emily said, her eyes glowing under the warm chandelier light. Trystan grinned, his hand lingering on her cheek. Emily turned her head slightly, kissing the inside of his palm.
Above them, vintage Drakovian music with saxophones and piano solos blared from the speakers. Offering his hand, Trystan smiled at his darling detective.
“Would you like to dance?”
Emily took the offer, one of her hands holding onto his shoulder. Trystan’s free hand rested on her waist, the touch causing her cheeks to blush.
Emily’s heart burst at the sight of her ardent lover. The two began to gently circle across the room, more and more guests piling onto the makeshift dance floor.
The room was complete with couples, new and old, all adorning spooky costumes. Sets of faces met each other, intertwining their hands and hearts. A consonant of laughs and lively music rang all across Marguerite’s manor. In those moments, the surly detective lost herself in the dance. Trystan admired the woman in front of him, completely ignoring every other face besides Emily’s.
“You may have stepped on my feet twice, but I still love you.” Trystan joked, laughing as Emily’s face lit up in faux anger.
“Hey!” Emily jabbed, lightly hitting his shoulder. “Give me some grace. I am an amazing dancer. Admit it!”
“Never,” Trystan replied, his eyes flitting to her lips.
“You know, tonight was...different than what I was expecting,” Emily said.
“You said that at the Iverson Ball, do you remember that?”
“Jesus fuck, you have a good memory.”
“It’s not hard to forget the night we found a dead body and then had to get out of a burning mansion.” Emily shrugged, ignoring her trembling hands as she recalled finding Bethany Delgado’s corpse.
“Anyways...I’m just glad we all got a chance to just. Fucking drink. And dance. Tonight was pretty...nice.”
“I think after everything, we definitely deserved this,” He said, the song coming to an end.
From above, Trystan found a figure standing at the top of the stairs. His smile faded, concern covering his eyes. Grumbling quietly, Emily was slightly pissed that such a sweet moment that they had all to themselves ended so abruptly.
“Is that...Marguerite?” Emily asked, watching the same figure.
“I think so. We should check up on her. I haven’t talked to her since we first got here.”
Looking over the railing, Marguerite somberly watched all her guests as they danced and drank together. A troubled expression washed over her features, the skin on her face warm.
“Mags?” Trystan called out, he and Emily approaching her. Chuckling her pity away, Marguerite shook her head, her eyes darting to the couple in front of her.
“We haven’t seen you all night,” Emily chipped in, “What’s wrong?”
Marguerite sighed, her shoulders heaving with anguish.
“I can’t stop thinking about Bas...and Vasili.”
Emily and Trystan glanced at each other, a lump lodging in both of their throats. Sweat trickled down Emily’s forehead, recalling Vasili’s last words.
“I’m so sorry that I-”
“Emily. I will never be upset with you for what you two had to do. I get it,” Marguerite said grief-sickeningly, “But shit.”
“Yeah,” Emily whispered back. “Shit.” She looked over at Trystan, frowning at his blotchy red eyes. Pangs of guilt built up inside her, and no matter how many people continued to tell her ‘You did what you had to do,’ Emily would never forgive herself. Ignoring her inner torment, she wiped away Trystan’s tears.
“What you two went through in Drakovia was a lot,” Emily whispered, “and I’m so fucking sorry for what happened.”
“I…appreciate it,” Trystan said genuinely, gazing at Emily’s face.
“Thank you for checking up on me,” Marguerite uttered, wiping away a weak trail of tears. “I’ll be fine, I promise.” Gritting her teeth, Marguerite smiled.
“Now, go and enjoy the rest of the party!” She called out, before promptly disappearing into the crowd of guests.
The two of them glanced at each other, alone. Squeezing his hand tightly, Emily sighed.
“Trystan, I...” She trailed off, struggling to continue, “I need to tell you, I’m so sorry for doing what I did to Vasili. I feel like I-“
“Emily, listen to me,” Trystan whispered, his fingers grazing the corners of her lips. “If we had arrested him, I know he would have found a way to get out and try to find me. I will never be mad at you for killing him.”
Emily’s body stood still. The muscles in her back loosened, and for once, the ghost on her shoulders had vanished.
“I’m sorry,” Emily repeated, her hands holding still Trystan’s.
“Don’t be.” Trystan cooed. “I think...we could definitely use some tissues, hm? Come on, there’s a bathroom nearby.”
Emily and Trystan entered a long corridor, a myriad of paintings and awards hung on the walls. Emily read all of them, doing anything to absolve herself from the guilt. Trystan squeezed her hand, heart aching.
“All of these awards are Marguerite’s?” Emily asked, reading a few of the titles. Best New Designer, Designer of the Year, and a few written in Drakovian that she couldn’t understand.
Before Trystan answered, Emily stopped in her tracks. Outside the bathroom, they heard a loud scuffle and a quiet groan behind the door.
“Hello?” Emily asked, knocking vigorously.
More scuffling.
“Hey? Are you okay?” Trystan asked, pressing his ear against the door. Emily rattled the doorknob.
“It’s fucking locked,” she snarled. Emily shoved the door open, gasping at the sight in front of her.
A large, brooding masked figure lurked over Uncle Tommy’s dead body, heaps of blood pooling out of his stomach. A few strings of guts spilled out, bright red and pink body parts staining the tiled floor. Tommy’s rotting eyes stayed open in horror, pointing upward to his killer. The familiar scent of copper ran through their noses. His skin became light grey, nearly zombie-like. The lips under his bushy mustache were stained a dark purple, chapped, and bloody. Emily’s heart jumped down to her stomach, all the oxygen in her body seemingly gone.
Tommy Rose was dead — killed just like her father. Only this time, Emily wasn’t afforded the option to hold his dying hands. Her whole body shook, and for just a brief second, Emily was back outside Box-Thirty Two…
The killer growled, holding onto a clean knife, as they lunged at the detective.
“Emily! WATCH OUT!” Emily ran to the side, and the masked killer immediately fell over onto the ground, the knife falling beside them. Without a second thought, she tackled the murderer, eyes burning with hatred. Her face turning a bright red, Emily spat on the murderer’s mask.
“I will fucking kill you,” she yelled, her hands digging into their wrists. The killer grunted, using their legs to kick Emily to the side, picking up the knife as they ran off. Clutching her stomach, Emily groaned.
“Trystan, let’s fucking go!” She screamed, racing after the killer. Sprinting downstairs, she and Trystan were only inches away from them. Their breaths grew short, their lungs straining as they went on running.
Zig-zagging through a gust of guests, commotion rang through Emily’s ears, but she tuned everything out. Her eyes were fixated on the person in front of her, the person who took Uncle Tommy away from her.
Reaching the crowded bar, the killer stopped in their tracks. Emily and Trystan growled as the detective reached for her taser, aiming it at the fucker.
“Last chance, asshole!” Emily bellowed. The killer ignored her, turning towards the bar. Without a second to waste, Emily pressed the trigger, the killer narrowly dodging it.
In the blink of an eye, a bottle of whiskey was in the killer’s hand, using their other hand to grab a lighter from their pocket.
“EVERYONE, GET OUT!” Trystan yelled as the killer threw the lighter and whiskey behind the bar. Screaming and crackles of fire echoed around the detective and the prince. Crushed glass fell to the floor, and the panicked crowd ran over the shards. The fire spread quickly, flames engulfing the wooden bar. Socialites hurried over to the exits, frantic and sobbing. Thick smoke swirled around the air, Emily and Trystan gagging as it reached their lungs.
Pushing past the stampede, the killer ran towards a long empty corridor, Emily and Trystan following suit. The soles of their feet were sore, flaky calluses forming beneath their socks.
“Oh, no you fucking don’t!” Emily shouted, her eyes furrowed in grief. The two chased after the killer, as they made a beeline to another exit. Picking up his speed, Trystan tackled the killer, his body tight against them.
“Fuck you,” The killer spat, his voice deep and unrecognizable. Twisting out of his grip, the killer mustered enough strength to punch Trystan’s face. Trystan’s eyes watered, blood gushing out of his nose.
“FUCK!” Trystan winced, his hands cradling his face as the killer ran off, “Emily, keep going!”
Emily chased after the killer, the back of his head finally meeting her eyes. The two were alone, now only a few feet away from each other. Emily reached out with her hands, wrapping them around the killer’s neck. Her head was pounding, and her guts felt like they were engulfed in flames, but Emily ignored it. She wanted him dead.
Grasping a tighter hold of the murderer, Emily mustered all her strength to ram him up against the wall. His head banged against it, letting out a tiny whine.
“Hands behind your back!” She scowled, using one arm to keep him pressed against the wall.
“Fuck off,” the killer shouted. As Emily was about to taze him, the killer grabbed the knife from his pocket and violently forced it into Emily’s shoulder. Just like with Vasili, she heard a loud crunch as it entered her skin. Blood trickled down her body. Howling in pain, Emily instinctively went to cover her wound, letting go of the killer. Growling at him, she limped forward, knowing that it was too late.
Thick strands of blood oozed out of her shoulder, her torso numb. Gritting her teeth, Emily carried on. Clutching the wound, Emily wobbled as she ran out a nearby exit, the killer long gone.
Large droplets of rain poured down, as the fire continued to spread throughout Marguerite’s manor. The vines on the walls turned to crisp, the orange flames raging. Hundreds of eyes watched as the mansion slowly crumbled. Ash flew around the night air, the dark grey smoke flailing upwards as the fire continued. From afar, sirens wailed on, the red and blue lights seeping through the thick trees.
“Emily! Oh my God,” Trystan said, running over to her. Putting his arms around her, he led her across the lawn. His eyes darted to the knife in her shoulder, worry taking over him. She studied his face, pained at the sight of his bloodied nose and swollen eyes. Emily looked back across the manor, realizing that Uncle Tommy’s body would soon be lost to rubble and fire. Images of his flesh meshing into the flames flickered through her mind, and Emily cringed at the thought.
“Oh fuck,” Emily sobbed. As the adrenaline died off, the grieving detective realized that the only other person who truly knew her father was now gone. Another Rose to be buried, and this time, with an empty casket. Emily’s chest ached, the bereavement fastening onto her heart. She leaned onto Trystan in support, her body going frail.
“There they are!” Luke yelled, the rest of the Ginovesi crew following behind him. Malfada looked at the detective concerningly, her eyes fixated on the dagger stuck in her shoulder.
“The...killer...got away,” Emily huffed, her vision going blurry.
“Emily? What happened?” Malfada asked. Looking down, Emily gasped at Tommy’s blood staining her hands.
“Uncle Tommy was murdered.”
