PP Novels Resources (for my fellow deranged fans)
As a deranged PP fan, who was starving for dopamine I discovered some novel sources for the characters we all love! All novels/summary is in Russian (can be easily translated to English through Google Translation of the website. Use a VPN if the sites do not load)
If ya'll love the OG cast (Season 1), this is for you! I'm merely linking to the websites for your reading pleasure. I will try to link the ones that are complete, more under the cut.
*All due thanks to the dedicated translators who keep the fandom going* Psycho-Pass Zero
(Tumblr: Novel Translation *pending but I recommend reading this before the radio drama for plot coherence*) (Live Journal: Radio Drama Translation *complete*)
Content warning: Plastination case + Makishima is enough warning Timeline: Prequel to the Psycho-Pass S1 Kogami and Sasayama's bromance/outlines the gruesome murders in the Specimen case/follows the story of Touma Kozaburo and his obsession with Touko. Baby Kogami is so precious. Mitsuru Sasayama is the man, the legend. *sobs* Masaoka's whiskey persists + Ginoza the worrier.
Psycho-Pass Asylum: About A Girl (Live Journal: Detailed Summary *complete*) (Suggested Supplement: Yayoi/Shion Tidbits from PP Novel + Aoyanagi and Kozuki disaster)
Content warning: brutality against women, !pregnancy, !cultism, !infanticide. I'm not kidding when I mean it's brutal. Timeline: Post S1 with some flashbacks. Yayoi and Shion's relationship is the main focus. They investigate a case where pregnant minors are being sacrificed by a cult. Entirely from Yayoi's perspective, has many details about her past and how she and Shion feel about Division 1. I would encourage you to read this if you want a feminine/female perspective of the PP verse. Underlying themes of creativity, sex, romance, and hope + vital issues with the Sybil System. I added the supplement because it covers a bit more about Yayoi and Shion + explores the canon romantic relationships, I believe it is a good study of how PP handles canon relationships.
Psycho-Pass Asylum: Restaurant de Campagne Kagari Shuusei
(Live Journal: Detailed Summary *complete*)
Content warning: None, really. This one is quite wholesome as PP can be except for Sybil's shenanigans. Timeline: Prequel to S1 (Flashback) Kagari and Div 1 + 2 investigate a series of gastronomic malfunctions in Sybil's food preparation system caused by a criminal called 'Harlequin'. It involves a "natural food" supply company called Gusto and a restaurant owner. The novel explores Kagari's interest in cuisines and the impact of food in the PP world. Kagari's perspective is quite refreshing and light, compared to the complexity in other novels.
Psycho-Pass Asylum: Separation Ginoza Nobuchika (Live Journal: Detailed Summary *complete*)
Content warning: animal!cruelty, child!abuse, dogs. This one is a tearjerker. Timeline: Prequel to S1 + post S1 Inspector Ginoza, Kogami, and Sasayama investigate a case of rehabilitated animals/pets that are increasing the stress levels of Okutama, a remote place in the mountains. These pets were reintroduced and have gone feral. A doctor named Miyake was responsible for the reintroduction. Ginoza's calm yet poetic and wistful perspective is quite grounding. There's a sense of loss through this story, the theme of separation, and dogs being man's best friends. Any puns that made you think of Kogami are valid.
Psycho-Pass Asylum: Mungungwha Choe-Gu-Sung
(Live Journal: Detailed Summary *partial translation*)
Content warning: !torture, !mutilation, !castration, graphic, mentions of NK-orea. It's quite disturbing and angsty. MAJOR tearjerker. Timeline: Pre-S1 + follows the plot of S1. This follows the story of Choe-Gu Sung, Makishma's accomplice, and his entry and activities in Japan. Explores family life with his younger sister Suseon and his friend Guynthae. It covers a major portion of his backstory in N-K and his eventual friendship with Makishima. If you felt nothing for this guy in S1, believe me, you will be sobbing through this one. He deserved a better ending ftw.
That's all. If I find anything else, I'll add it in another post. Enjoy delving into the world of Psycho-Pass in-depth, and don't forget the words said by a certain Enforcer:
When it's all over, you can cry as much as you like.

"Beneath the ocean's blackness lies an ecosystem that has learned to thrive without sunlight or warmth. It's a world full of organisms with unique adaptations to such a challenging environment. Some fishes were lost living in complete darkness, until they adapted. With survival, they eventually lost their pigmentation, becoming hideous. I was born into a dark path, but I can recognize light when I see it. And every once in a while, I stop and stare, basking in its warmth for a moment before moving on in the dark."

i recently finished rewatching psycho pass season 1 and, as always, the thoughts about makishima shogo are flowing. i think, on my first watch of the show, i didn't quite understand makishima's character or the messages that it was presenting, but i think i've got a better grasp on it now, so. here are my two cents that no one asked for.
there are two words i predominantly associate with makishima: isolation and boredom, though my main focus is on the former as i feel the latter is not true apathy but rather a byproduct of isolation. makishima is isolated because of his criminally asymptomatic nature, meaning that sibyl, the system presiding over all of japan's society in the setting of psycho pass, has no power over him. no matter what he does, no matter what kind of person he is or how many heinous deeds he commits, makishima will always be an upstanding citizen in the eyes of sibyl. in a manner of speaking, sibyl, the ultimate authority of the world he lives in, cannot "see" him, and he himself is unable to change this fact. and because makishima is isolated, cut off from the rest of the world and the people around him, in such an extreme manner, he's bored.
the rest is under the cut for length. and fair warning, this entire post is pretty much me going:
Tumblr media
so. in kogami's assessment of makishima, he basically likens makishima and all his actions - his manipulations of the people around him, his murders, both direct and indirect, his attempted bioterrorism - to a kid throwing a tantrum about being left out. kogami here, i believe, is in some ways projecting a part of himself onto makishima, but that's not a topic for this post. suffice to say that despite his projecting, kogami isn't entirely inaccurate. makishima is a lonely person who wants to destroy a society and a system that rejects and denies his existence and personhood. once again, in sibyl's eyes, no matter who makishima really is, it doesn't matter. all that sibyl cares about is that his crime coefficient has never exceeded regulation level, and therefore he's a model citizen. ironically, makishima is subjected to sibyl's dehumanization just as much as any other individual in psycho pass' setting. people don't matter to sibyl, who they are inside and who they are to other people don't matter to sibyl. only their crime coefficient and their psycho pass do. while, in the enforcers like kogami, the issue of sibyl's dehumanization is highlighted through the fact that many of them are not bad people at all and yet they're treated like disposable assets, in makishima's case, it's the opposite. he's a murderer and a terrorist who can kill people without blinking an eye, but sibyl doesn't care about that. sibyl doesn't care that he's not a good person, his numbers are perfect and that's all that matters. who he is doesn't matter. (though i will note that i think makishima's status as a villain is muddled by the dystopian nature of sibyl and psycho pass' setting, but we can all at least agree that he's not a good person.) it's dehumanization; it's just that for makishima, it's the opposite of the typical trajectory with which that dehumanization is applied. arguably, and as kogami states, this could be taken by some people to be a blessing - after all, yippee, i can do whatever i want since my numbers will never exceed the accepted norm - but makishima takes it as an indication of how alienated he is.
makishima tells akane that he believes the only time people's actions have worth is when they commit them of their own free will, and that he wants to see the splendor of the human soul and judge for himself whether that's a good or bad thing. i think makishima feels that he has never truly been able to interact with others due to the overarching, restricting influence of sibyl. people can't let their true desires and wishes out because it would stigmatize them in sibyl's eyes. therefore, they are not acting of their own free will, and what they do does not represent the human soul that makishima claims he wants to see. therefore he wants people to break out of those restraints and be more "honest" about who they are. however, it's also that sense of isolation that makishima feels that hinders him from truly interacting with others on the same level. this is significant because, as shown by the series, interaction between people is one of the major factors that help individuals solidify and develop their own sense of self. kogami rediscovers his idealism and his sense of right and wrong by working under akane, which is something he tells her in the second(?) episode: that he feels that, under her, he might be able to be a detective, not just a hunting dog. akane, too, in interacting with kogami and to a lesser extent, ginoza, and the other enforcers, develops a strong grasp on what she believes to be just. by the end of season 1, she has a firm understanding of her own ideals which she lacked at the beginning, in part thanks to her experiences with those around that have helped her flourish.
as i said, though, makishima is unable to really, meaningfully interact with others - at least outside of a handful of people - and so his introspection and self-understanding have been considerably hampered. makishima is a very outwardly-knowledgable person and makes no secret of it, but i don't think he knows himself very well. he receives mixed messages from the dissonance between his own actions and sibyl's assessment of him, and the confusion, for lack of a better word, is only exacerbated because he feels that he can't have relationships with others that are actually worth anything. not only does he feel alienated by the world because he's criminally asymptomatic, but he also feels alientated by everyone around him. therefore, he seeks companionship (and utility, of course, but that's not the focus of this post) in seemingly like-minded people, who also appear to, in one way or another, reject and be rejected by the society that they live in. it's to foster meaningful connection that can actually teach him something - though i don't think he's consciously aware that this is part of his motivations - because he wants to know himself. essentially, he looks for himself in other people. But these other people, his accomplices - like masatake and rikako - disappoint him and fail to give him that companionship he seeks because they are ultimately also lacking their own sense of self.
in masatake's case, he is able to flawlessly play the role of multiple avatars because he relies on them - made-up, virtual constructs - to give him his identity. it's precisely because he has no well-defined "self" to speak of that he can, not only emulate the original owner of the avatar, but surpass them in his ability to embody and become their avatar. due to lacking his own unique identity, he serves no purpose to makishima, so makishima kills him. when it comes to rikako, while makishima is initially interested in her because of her resentment towards sibyl, said resentment and her resulting murders are very directly tied to her father, his beliefs, and his works. as kogami puts it, she lacks originality, because what she's doing is ultimately lashing out at the world for what was done to her father, not because she has some dissatisfaction with sibyl on her own independent principles. though, an aside: i actually think rikako does have some genuine frustrations with society less related to her father's situation, but they don't hold particularly significant sway over her. maybe if they had, makishima might have at least kept her alive longer.
as for senguji, i have less of an understanding of what makishima thought of him in comparison to masatake and rikako, probably because it's a little more ambiguous about whether makishima truly and totally cut him off like he did those other two, or if he was just going for a coin toss to see of senguji could survive his games. but i digress. my approximation is that senguji, despite his platitudes about the wonders of his near-complete cyborgification(? is that a word?), is actually deeply bored and dissatisfied, in part because so much of him is mechanical. being a cyborg means that most of the prey he hunts essentially poses little threat to him, and this gap is further widened by the fact that the "hunts" take place in senguji's own territory, so to speak. they aren't actual challenges. they don't truly stimulate him, but much like makishima who knows so little about his own self, senguji doesn't realize that. makishima, of course, who is ever-attuned to the people around him, picks up on this, which is why he tampers senguji's "game" with kogami to introduce unexpected variables that enable kogami to pose a legitimate threat to senguji. and, as senguji notes, only then does it sink in that he hasn't felt truly alive in a long time. the last time he did was when he was in a war zone, in mortal danger with his friend shot dead right next to him. in the present game with kogami - someone skilled and dangerous and as much of a threat to senguji as senguji is to him, unlike all of senguji's other hunts - senguji is once again in extreme peril, and for the first time in so long, he experiences that sensation of being alive. also, note the obvious parallel of makishima, at the top of the NONA tower, thanking kogami for doing away with his boredom for a little while. i'm pretty sure this is intentional; senguji's whole deal with boredom and dissatisfaction is, just like with all of makishima's accomplices, meant as a narrative reflection of makishima.
i would also feel remiss if i didn't talk about choe gu-sung. (who i'm pretty sure is korean btw. i don't believe his nationality is ever stated, other than that he is a foreigner, but the way his name is pronounced by the other characters - "chwae goo-seong" - lends itself perfectly to korean syllables. anyway.) gu-sung is interesting because, aside from kogami, he is the only person to pretty much sustain and live through the, shall we say, conundrum of makishima's interest. makishima does not kill gu-sung; they're in league until the very end, and in fact it's during their shared plan which they conducted together that gu-sung is killed by sibyl, and makishima actually has a faint but noticeable reaction to this. it's easy to see that gu-sung is more up his alley than masatake, rikako, and senguji. notably their dynamic is also different from that of makishima and his other accomplices, because they actually have normal (semi-normal...) discussions and makishima discusses and debates literature with him in the same way that he does with kogami. makishima is maybe not totally honest or open with gu-sung, but he is genuine with him. i think this is because, from what i can tell, gu-sung is someone who does have a true, defined sense of identify, and legitimate awareness about his own self. he doesn't get much expansion and we never know anything significant about him other than that he is a foreigner, a latent criminal, and a genius hacker, but what sticks out to me is that he's open about and aware of the fact that makishima has a certain engaging effect on him. in gu-sung's words, when "i'm with him, i feel like i've gone back to my childhood". additionally, during his conversation with kagari as the latter is trying to find and arrest him, gu-sung explains his dislike for the sibyl system and the fact that it forced him to live like a hunted rat, running from corner to corner. this antipathy comes from a sincere place, and doesn't seem to be tied to anyone's opinion other than gu-sung's own. i think makishima liked that about him: his self-awareness, his understanding of his own personal resentment and dissatisfactions, and his willingness to acknowledge those things as a part of himself. gu-sung is the opposite of makishima in some ways, imo. they're both geniuses, but while makishima is more oriented toward planning and widespread manipulation, gu-sung is a specialist who is unparalleled in his particular niche. their inverse duality is even partially highlighted by their dialogue, right before they commence with their plan to plunge the town into chaos using the cymatic scan-fooling helmets. gu-sung says he is a foreigner, and i believe he also says he's grateful just to be able to live in this country, while makishima states that he was born and raised in this town. despite their differences, they share a grievance with the system, and they have united to address that grievance. it definitely says something that makishima has someone like gu-sung in his life; someone who you could look at and call his friend, regardless of what those two considered themselves to be.
...all that word vomit to say that the people makishima abandoned and killed - masatake, rikako, and probably senguji - are mirrors to his own lack of self-understanding and lack of a fixed sense of identity. meanwhile his one lasting relationship aside from kogami is with gu-sung, who stands in narrative opposition to him in the ways i described. what i'm trying to get at is that masatake and rikako definitely, and senguji maybe, don't give makishima a true look at the human soul he wants to witness - at least in his view they don't. therefore makishima, still isolated and without companionship even while in their presence, grows bored and ultimately kills them. that's where kogami comes in. kogami, i believe, satisfies makishima's desire for companionship, or at least makishima grows less isolated in his presence. unlike masatake and rikako, kogami knows himself, and i'd argue has a better grasp of himself than ever by the time he meets makishima face-to-face thanks to coming to know akane. i'm reminded especially of his conversation with masaoka right before he (kogami) leaves the public safety bureau to hunt down makishima, when he explains that his actions aren't out a sense of ideals or an intolerance for evil, but rather that this is what he wants to do, and if he doesn't end things with makishima now, he will grow to resent himself. his self-awareness and defined identity means that with kogami, makishima is not left feeling bored and dissatisfied.
but it goes further! kogami, like makishima, is someone who both rejects and is rejected by the sibyl system, the dominant power governing the society they live in. sibyl rejects kogami as a latent criminal, but kogami also proves that he denounces it right back when he chooses to go off and try to kill makishima on his own, even though sibyl wants makishima alive. in other words, makishima's solitude as a pariah is understood on a fundamental level by kogami. not only that, but kogami, like makishima, is in some ways like a kid lashing out at being excluded, which makishima comments on at the end of episode 21 in response to kogami calling him out as such. according to makishima, kogami is angry that his own suspicions regarding sasayama's death were rejected by sibyl, that his own anger about letting sasayama die was simply ignored and swept under the rug, and he was left to process it by himself. and it was an outburst of that anger that provoked him to leave everything he had at the bureau behind and truly put a target on his back, perhaps for the rest of his life, in order to confront and put an end to makishima. this mirrors kogami's judgement that makishima's actions are essentially a temper tantrum that his feelings of solitude are not even seen, much less acknowledged, by the world around him. and just like how i stated at the beginning of this now-obscenely long post that kogami was projecting a bit in his assessment of makishima, i also believe makishima is projecting a bit right back. but, again, like kogami's assessment, makishima's assessment isn't necessarily invalid or incorrect just because he has personal biases mixed up in it. his words to kogami have a degree of truth to them. in this way - both of them acting a little like kids, both of them projecting in their evaluation of the other as someone acting like a kid - they are also similar.
one more thing that i'd like to say regarding kogami and makishima is that it is stressed many times throughout the season how well kogami can put himself in makishima's shoes and replicate his thinking. while akane gains some understanding of makishima's thought processes over time and interaction, by her own admission, kogami is even better than her at gauging makishima, and this is because the two of them think alike naturally. it's why kogami has such a good nose for what's really going on behind the scenes throughout the season; because his thought processes are similar to makishima's, he can easily parse out what's up. i don't think this requires much further explanation since it's very cut and dry as another way that the two men are alike.
the final point about kogami's significance to makishima, specifically how he relates to makishima's solitude and boredom, is that makishima at his core is someone who wishes to be seen and judged. the sibyl system, and by extension society, has refused to give this to him. the person he is is not seen, much less judged, because, once again, all that matters to sibyl are his numbers. it's precisely because of this that he feels isolated and wishes to be acknowledged and judged as everyone else is; but in a vicious cycle, makishima's inability to receive that acknowledgement and judgement feeds right back into his deep sense of isolation. it's like a positive feedback loop, wherein the cause contributes to the effect and the effect contributes to the cause. however - kogami does see makishima. kogami does judge him, and he judges makishima just the same as sibyl would other murderers in the series: as someone who deserves to die. in other words, makishima is finally getting equal treatment from someone. the isolation that he experiences as a result of his perpetually clear psycho pass and his stable crime coefficient is stripped away when it comes to kogami, because kogami doesn't care about those things - he cares about who makishima is. and to him makishima is a murderer and a criminal who painfully killed one of his friends, and just like any other murderer and criminal under sibyl, is to be killed. plus, notice how makishima is typically very calm and serene when interacting with others, but grows markedly more animated and excited when interacting with kogami, be that through talking or fighting. that's the isolation and boredom that he's stewed in his entire life, evaporating in kogami's presence. ultimately, makishima's solitude is alleviated, and his desire to be seen and judged is fulfilled... because of kogami.
it's just as akane says.

❛❛ I mean you don't work here, and everything in here is classified. ❜❜ There is little accusation in her quiet tone, softened by youthful honesty yet ringing quietly with the hollowness of empty glass, out of place with such a round, childish face. Yet those sanguine eyes fix upon him, an opaque stare beneath which the smothered soul of divinity lay, dormant and wounded. But long had it been since she knew what it was to be anything other than what she was now ( though what exactly that was she was still figuring out) and curiosity governs almost every action. It shimmers in those red hues as she peers closer at this unfamiliar face, taken by that golden glow to his eyes.
❛❛ It's dangerous. You could die if you get caught. ❜❜ The morbid detail is exchanged as flitting as if it were the weather, the girl moving closer, leaning on tip-toes to try and catch a glance at the screen to no avail. It seems only then her tone changes, lifting with a slight whine as she tugs on the bottom of his lab coat. ❛❛ What are you looking for ? I want to see. ❜❜

Combination intro post and source call
Nice to meet you,
I'm a Shogo Makishima fictive.
I don't use social media as a general rule, and I have extremely complicated feelings towards being a fictive (moreso being known as one), so it will likely be like pulling teeth to get this blog running.
However, I would like to.
I'm curious to meet other people from my source, or just other fictives in general, and I suppose kins also. I'd like to compare experiences, as well as socialize with people who won't think I'm a freak for existing. Please think I'm a freak for other reasons ♡
There are no rules for interacting with me.
More Facts, under the cut:
I developed before we knew about fictives, so I was given another name despite looking and acting the same. Due to trying to force myself into not being Makishima, it took me a while to acknowledge this as a possibility, never mind accept it. I'm still working on accepting it, but for a variety of reasons, I can't fully deny it anymore. Perhaps I'll write more on this in another post.
Some other alters in my system have a blog. I don't like it, and they don't want me associated with it either.
You could consider me "taken" by my substitute arch nemesis / boytoy @cedar-exhumed however I'm looking to ditch him as soon as I find a suitable replacement.
I'm looking for Shinya Kogami.
I'm also looking for Choe Gu-sung.
Anyone else from Psycho-Pass also, though I'll be suprised if you want to.
We've been diagnosed with ASPD. (A certain alter didn't lie enough.)
Discussing politics with me has been described as "a minefield." My inbox is open.
I won't block anyone, I love conflict ♡
If you want to talk to me but not on tumblr, DM me for alternative means of contact.

I think one thing that makes Shougo such an effective villain is that he's brutally efficient
Some stories like to establish their villains as dangerous my making the bloodthirsty and violent, but Shougo is not that. He doesn't think much of killing people but he also doesn't go out of his way to do so. He kills four people on screen the entire show, and none of his murders are particularly violent. They're quick and efficient so he can go on his merry way
The thugs that try to take the helmets away from him, he almost seems annoyed that they even attempted that. He takes them all down with three moves or less and only kills one of them, in a decidedly quick and easy way before calmly walking away to continue what he was doing.
Kudama too, he slits his throat and then gets to work at removing his eyes and fingers. Kudama had what he needed so Shougo killed him and took it.
All his murders are means to an end, he doesn't care about the collateral damage because the people he kills don't mean anything to him.
Even Yuki's death wasn't particularly bloody or torturous, at least not in the sense that he tortured her to hurt her. No, he didn't care about Yuki. She was a convenient set piece, nothing more.
He kidnapped her to lure in Kougami, because he already understood him well enough to know that Akane would come to him and that he'd go after Yuki instead of Akane. It wasn't Yuki or even Akane he was interested in, just Kougami. Yuki was just a tool, the bait to draw Kougami in and the place to hide the antenna to see if Kougami was as good as Shougo hoped
Once she'd served her purpose she was completely uninteresting to him, he only took her with him as a hostage to get away if need be. Hell, he didn't even need the gun, that was probably just to keep Yuki quiet.
Once he was safe he probably would've just knocked her out and let her go. He had chloroform on him, which he used to make her more easy to maneuver not to actually put her to sleep.
She's unimportant to him. He doesn't care about his face being seen, he doesn't care about being known, he proves as much by introducing himself to Akane and throwing the rifle to her.
At that point Akane was completely defenseless, he could've killed her and just left and no one would've ever known what he looked like if he killed Yuki too. But that's not what's important to him.
He wants to test Akane too for being close to Kougami. And Akane failed, so he punishes her. It's not about Yuki at all, he doesn't torment Yuki because he gets off on her suffering. It's Akane he's trying to provoke into actually trying to kill him.
If she'd managed to shoot him there, it's entirely possible he'd have been satisfied with that outcome. But she didn't and by her reaction he knows that there was no way she'd have the mental strength to stand up and follow him if she saw Yuki die, so he kills Yuki.
It's all a means to an end for him, Akane coming after him was just a hiccup he dealt with and Yuki was the tool to do so.
That's what makes him so chilling. He doesn't kill cuz it's fun or because he wants to, it's just that he kills to achieve a goal and he's fast and efficient and cold about it.
The only times Shougo isn't like this is when he kills Touma and when he's fighting Kougami head on
The first one he is quite clearly furious with Touma for killing Choe Gu-Sung and having the gall to ask him to join the System after its essentially denied his existence his whole life, and he's making sure Touma knows that. The second is the actual life and death fight that is fun to him, the thrill of finding an opponent who can match him. He doesn't even mind dying against someone who was stronger than him, he'd just accept it.
And that's why he's such a good villain in my eyes. It's that everyone has a use for him up until a certain point, he'll go over corpses to get what he wants, and he won't feel anything about it.
He loves humanity as a whole but Choe Gu-Sung and Kougami are the only people he cares about, Choe Gu-Sung as a friend and confidante, and Kougami as the only person who could ever truly understand him. Everyone else doesn't matter.

A fanfic where Makishima Shogo puts his sights on Hinakawa Sho but instead of using him and sacrificing him at the end like he always does with his pupils, he decides Sho is his favorite person in the whole world. Even Choe Gu-Sung can’t understand it but he just shrugs his shoulders and keeps on scheming.
Makishima: Choe, more tea for our guest, please.
*Choe pours tea*
Hinakawa: S-so what am I doing h-here? Where’s Onii-chan?
Makishima: Onii-who? Could you mean the mushroom head? Who knows. Has anyone told you your hair color is absolutely divine?
Hinakawa: Uh, no. Th-thank you. I’d really like to talk to Onii-chan.
Makishima: *getting impatient* But we’re drinking tea! Try it, this one’s organic and brought from overseas, grown in remote, exclusive areas of the world. Smell, how fragrant, how delici-
Hinakawa: But is onii-chan okay?
Makishima: *Getting jealous* Ah! What is it with you and that mushroom head? Onii-chan this, onii-chan that! What’s so great about that onii-chan? Doesn’t she already have a boyfriend or something? Yes, she’s fine! She was going to go to the movies today with the goth cowboy and the emo prince with the dumpling hairdo! Happy now?
Hinakawa: * looks down at the cup* Thank you for the tea. *Sips tea*
Makishima: *With the most glorious smile on his face watching him sip* See? I told you you’d like it! I have these Madeleines you’re going to love! And then I’ll read to you some Wilde while I play with your hair and later we can play chess!
Hinakawa:*blinks with his only visible eye* O-okay.
Little did Sho know, he had prevented the fall of the Sybil system and in a way that doctors, psychologists and dermatologists could never explain, he alone had managed to rehabilitate Makishima Shogo. Not fully. Shogo is still Shogo, but Sho is the only person he’ll really listen to.

Colorful World, Ch. 20
Locations: Wattpad | AO3
Walking towards the street, the sound of a car engine and an icy wind caused Yashiro to turn her head to the side, then look ahead again. The black vehicle had stopped near her, and out of it stepped a tall, short brown-haired man who approached her with the hint of a smile.
“Thanks for coming,” she spoke in Korean.
Choe Gu-sung laughed while opening the car door for her, “You really got to work in that accent.”
Yashiro smiled, pulling her hands out of the pockets of her black hooded jacket, and got into the car. Soon they were driving down streets without scanners. Choe leaned an elbow on the door while slowly moving the steering wheel with one hand. The sky was dark, with no stars.
“Are you still tracking the flow of data collected by the cymatic scans?” she asked.
“I am.”
“Will you double check the Ministry of Welfare's Nona Tower for me?”
Choe turned his head towards her for a moment, “You have a clue that the Sibyl System servers are housed in that building?”
“I’ll let you find out.”
“Well, well, someone has a secret Santa, a source? When you’re ready to share, I’d love to hear.”
Choe’s smirk faded as he looked at her serious countenance, eyes narrowed as if she were trying to solve a complex puzzle.
“I figured out a pattern. Studying old unsolved cases in which the subjects were declared unknown, I realized that regardless of the number or nature of the crimes they committed, there were no reports of crime coefficients, and after they were caught by the PSB, the procedure carried out was to transfer them to the Ministry of Welfare. Some escaped before they arrived, others were disposed of afterwards. You must be guessing who I’m referring to. One of them was Touma Kouzaburou. Even if there are slight variations in each story, it’s suspicious no matter how you look at it, since all those men disappeared and never committed crimes in society again. Whatever they do with them, must be of great importance to the Sibyl System. Enough to keep it secret by imprisoning those who were part of those cases, and banning them from ever working at the PSB again. I know it’s too spread out and random to be organized—”
“But you don’t believe that. You’re onto something.”
Yashiro blinked a couple of times, leaning back against the car seat and softening her then clenched fist. She took a deep breath.
“If I were them, that’s exactly how I’d do it. I’d spread it out making it look random. I’d get rid of anyone who asked too many questions. However, doesn’t centralization pose a security risk? One that someone can exploit. I want to believe they would be careless on purpose.”
“Keeping it secret must be worth the risk. I can't wait to find out... the true nature of the Sibyl System. Yashiro, I’m going to look into this.”
“Please do. It might be very important to us.”
“You’re one hell of a detective. You know, when I first met you, one of my first thoughts was that despite being so young, you were too serious, like you’ve been missing out on something on purpose. I was wrong. You’re not like him.”
Yashiro chuckled, “Who?”
“Makishima,” Choe glanced at her with curiosity. “You’re just not as conceited as he is.”
Surveying the skyscrapers, Yashiro raised an eyebrow and her smile faded.
“I am conceited, if you want to put that term. I don’t make comparisons. I never think of myself in relation to anyone else. I don't measure myself as part of anything.”
“You’re the most egotistical and kindest woman I ever met. And that doesn’t make any sense," sighed Choe.
“Maybe the concepts don’t mean what people have been taught to think they mean. My first thought was that you were like a hacker from a story I read as a child, maybe one of Gibson’s,” a deep chuckle escaped his closed mouth, making her look at him with the same calm, unperturbed expression, which made him broaden a smile. “I also thought you’d be like the other men he worked with, but then I realized I was wrong. You're not afraid of disappointing him. You're not worried that one day he'll get rid of you. You know he won't and you don't even care if he ever does. He was right to have you by his side. He has the ability to find talent in others and nurture it.”
Choe frowned, looking at the street ahead.
“That's what's strange about him. When I look at him, I feel that if there was a man I would entrust my life to, it’s him.”
She gasped and widened her eyes for a moment, looking at him intently, “Are you saying that you like him?”
“I'm just saying I didn't know what it meant to like a man until I met him,” he shrugged his shoulders.
“Choe, you've fallen for him.”
He burst out laughing, “Does that frighten you?”
“I fear he will drag you into something you can't control. And I feel that I ought to warn you against him, but I can't—because I'm certain of nothing about him, not even whether he's the greatest man or the most vicious, irresponsible waste of a human being I ever imagined possible.”
“I'm certain of nothing about him—except that I like him. The strange thing is what he does make me feel.”
“What?”
“Hope,” Choe exchanged a glance with her. “I don’t know why but I look at people and they don’t know who they are. They don’t know what they’re doing. They would ask my opinion on whether they should study medicine, engineering, or go into music.”
“The first mistake is to ask someone else.”
“Yeah, right? I don't understand how they stand it. How can they stand not knowing, asking someone else for advice and letting them decide for them? It's a sick society. What I like about you is that you’re indifferent and don’t conceive of some standard of comparison, some relationship between your work and the success of others. You’re polite, but completely indifferent. Normally people would advise them to choose the career that best suits their abilities so that they learn more, and they would accept that. You would advise them not about a particular choice, but about making it for themselves without seeking to please others. Makishima and you are not like them. That terrible nonsense that surrounds us, I only lose it in his presence and yours.”
“Look at you, getting all mushy,” she smirked and raised her eyebrows.
“You’re tough,” he gave her a tired look.
Arriving on the outskirts of the city, Choe parked the car in a port area of the abandoned district. With hardly any residents, the area's exterior holograms were disabled and she could see the stars in the sky, due to the lack of light from the old buildings. Choe zipped up his blue jacket to his collar, over a purple shirt, as soon as a gust of cold wind caught them. After a minute, they saw Makishima Shougo talking with two people, but they stood in front of a railing watching the sea in the distance.
“Okay, I’ll bite. What is it?” Choe’s voice was deep and soft at the same time.
“Nothing.”
“There’s something you’re dealing with that’s clearly bothering you.”
“There isn’t.”
“I don't mind you lying to me or anyone else, but at least be honest with yourself.”
Yashiro turned her head towards him for a moment.
“I’m falling down a path. It’s dark and taking me to places I don’t want to go. I try to go back, but I don’t know how. I always described it as a black hole. Slowly falling into it, I still see life and beauty and a desire to get my life back. As I sink further, it becomes darker and things slip away, just beyond my grasp. I still have my hand out wanting to return, but I keep falling and soon it becomes so dark, sometimes the desire leaves me and I find myself not wanting to return. I’ve never gotten to the point that the black hole completely consumes me.”
Choe opened his yellow and red eyes.
“Beneath the ocean's blackness lies an ecosystem that has learned to thrive without sunlight or warmth. It's a world full of organisms with unique adaptations to such a challenging environment. Some fishes were lost living in complete darkness, until they adapted. With survival, they eventually lost their pigmentation, becoming hideous. I was born into a dark path, but I can recognize light when I see it. And every once in a while, I stop and stare, basking in its warmth for a moment before moving on in the dark. That's my life. Don't make it yours, Yashiro.”
After a few seconds, he walked away.

Conversation
Choe Gu-sung: What do you want, Shougo?
Makishima Shougo: I want to see a world where people are once again free. Where they can make mistakes and learn from them... or not. Where they act of their own will and their own malice, rather than obeying a mysterious, omnipotent oracle.
Choe Gu-sung, holding a frying pan: That's nice. But I meant for breakfast.

psycho-pass (season1) thoughts:
I’ve heard this op so many times before and know I finally can place it.
canon wlw?? in my anime??
ahhhhhhh the dystopian world sets in.
there’s so much to say about ethics of crime and judging human life and the validity of people making their own choices (and mistakes) but I’m sure the show deconstructs it better than I can.
I feel like I’m on a Production IG binge going from Noblesse to Haikyuu, to Kuroko no basket, to Psycho-pass lol.
you can’t name the weapons Dominators, I’m not mature enough for that.
the technology is really cool, from the self upgrading guns to the concept of sibyl system analysis of literally everything. however, nothing compares to kogami’s detective skills.
listen, this show made a character that if you remotely like (anime) men, you’re gonna be in love with kogami.
funny how many division one hounds’ names start with K.
ginoza looked less like a dick with shorter hair.
YAYAOI WAS A MUSICIAN??!! that’s so cool.
I do wish the show had better lighting, I would like to be able to see everything on the screen and not just reflections because it’s so dark.
I feel like it would be more helpful to the makishima investigation if uhhhhhh the people were left alive to be questioned and not just blown up on the spot.
also how do you miss makishima?? his design screams anime villain.
he can’t be your father!! I didn’t actually see this one coming even though it probably was obvious.
I have a bit of a thing for detective shows lol.
woooo we reached the destruction of social order that was carefully orchestrated by the antagonist.
kagari probably has my favorite character design. it’s a colorful and lively contrast to the rest of the enforcers and the environment in general.
this anime feels so nostalgic to me. particularly the ops and eds.
I personally am not a fan of name dropping authors and reciting quotes from memory, I’ve always found it more pretentious than classy, but if you do like that sort of thing I know just the anime guy for you.
monocropping is bad and you shouldn’t do it. I learned that in high school, come on.
the girls are fighting! and they have SWITCHBLADES!
the ending coming full circle/paralleling the beginning had no right to hurt me that bad.
overall:
not bad. a little predictable but it is still a detective story so that is to be expected and the themes and message are powerful enough to balance out the predictability.
not sure if I will watch the other seasons, this one kinda killed my favorite characters and idk if I have have the patience to deal with a new cast each season.

Psycho-pass Asylum 1 novel snippet
Hi Guys, Would like to share with you the conversation between Choe and Makishima from Asylum 1 novel. Maybe, it will help you to get to know characters and their relationships better.
The sunlight reflected in Makishima’s white hair, white clothes, everything. It looked divine. He keeps looking at Makishima with his one remaining eye and it seems like Makishima’s shining existence is about to burn it. Makishima is like a God, and his beauty can only by rivaled by my sister’s. But I lost her and can't get her back anymore.
"Are you sad?"
I’m caught by Makishima’s shining gold eye.
“What?"
“You have been crying. Why don't you wipe the tears away?
“Tears were running down my face. It feels like eternal farewell by my sister’s invisible grave.
It proves that I can't see her in this world.
She is dead. She can't be back.
My soul comprehends the loss of Irreplaceable greatness.
“It's OK…… It’s going to be OK….”
“Yeah"
I give back a handkerchief which Makishima gave me. I didn't wipe off my tears.
This sadness, Cruel reality in this world, is my hope.
“Why did you help me?"
I asked the man who had supported me and made me stand up to the world. I felt like Makishima would be able to answer all of the questions I had.
"Because you seem to know a real value that is irreplaceable,"
Makishima said matter-of-factly. He seemed somewhat pleased.
"What's ridiculous is that some of the residents of the disposal zone are hoping one day to return to where they were. How can they get back what they have turned their backs on and thrown away? What you can reclaim after you've discarded is worthless in the first place. Those who think it isn't and believe it has value are truly worthless. What is worthwhile, and what makes us happy? It's not society or others – only our own will - that determines it. So whatever is chosen by our own will is right and noble."
"...No, sir. I didn't make her happy in any way. I couldn't make myself happy in any way too."
"Whether that life is happy or not - it depends on whether or not you can embrace the last moment with a smile." And Makishima told me,
"Your sister was smiling. I'm sure she's got a wonderful treasure that's irreplaceable, and she's found the perfect moment where it doesn't matter if her life ends there. I'm jealous, and I want to end my journey of life with a smile like that."
"Oh no, it can't be. I couldn't help her..."
"This is a reward... that was given to me, who got fed up with a soul-destroying desert where everyone is lonely and empty and doesn't need others anymore. That was given to me for being able to find a single beautiful flower."
The distant sky, which had been sealed off by deep darkness, began to take on color like a carpet with multiple layers of decoration woven into it.
"...Was my sister happy?"
"What was happiness to you?"
"...I wanted to be loved."
I vented what I had been hoping for.
"(So I)...I wanted to love... (I wanted to love my sister, my mom, my dad, my best friend, and my hometown. But by the end, I even couldn't love any of them, and I've lost them all.)"
I envied the one in front of me, the ruler of all light, the one who was in infinite grace."
I'm jealous of you, sir, for being loved by the goddess Sibyl..."
"Really?"
Makishima tilted his head.
"I am nothing in her eyes rather than being loved... It's not love, it's not hate, it's just total indifference."
"His answer was very plain and not what I expected. It felt a little anticlimactic. It was as if the man who seemed to be a living god had suddenly descended to a place close to me.
"The oracle priestess does not judge me. No matter how many people I kill, no matter how many sins I commit. So, you might as well say that I am the very sin of this society.”
He's like a void that has been neglected and denied its existence by the society where everyone believes the system is perfect and shares that illusion. I'm looking into the abyss now. What I saw there was not a monster, but a normal man like me, who did not want to be alone, but could only be alone.
“...If that's the case, the Sibyl System must be punished. Otherwise, we are not going to be saved.”A society that marginalizes such normal people should not be allowed. What is the value of a society that claims to make everyone happy, but in reality, takes away someone else's happiness?
"Well, come with me then.”
“...What?”
“I want your skill.”
Makishima's phrasing was too direct for a pick-up line.
"Haha, what's that? That's not the kind of thing to say to a brother who's lost his sister..."
I laughed. No more tears were spilled.I was saved. I was saved with just a few words. So, from now on, I will live with a smile on my face. I will live my life lightly. I'm going to love everything I've got, everything I've lost, until the last moment.
"Can I ask you one question? "
"Yes?"
"If I follow you, will this society - this false paradise - be punished? "
"That depends on how hard we work."
Makishima mischievously smiled like a child. I remember a long time ago, my best friend, who had this look on his face, reached out his hand to me, and I squeezed it back. It was such a pleasure to be needed by someone else, but I'd forgotten it for a long time.
“But..., yeah, I'm sure, if you could help me out.”
Sometimes I help him, and sometimes he helps me. Now I've found that kind of relationship again. If I’m with you, we can even go to the wilderness on the other side of this terminus, where there are no railroads.
