Pastel pencils on pastelmat paper. I ran out of room for the right antenna. This started off as a test, but I ended up putting more detail than I thought. The beetle is Chlorocala africana oertzeni.

Oooooooh!
Okay, so.
My bookshelf bug research adventures have gotten a new twist!
So there's this site I've been using as a reference point for available isopods. It's a Finnish site, they have a store in Helsinki so I don't have to worry about international shipping or anything.
I had thought about turning to a local pet store when it'd be time to add beetles into my planned collection. They have couple different species of flower beetles listed. The two choices I had been pondering were Chlorocala africana camerunica (iridescent green, 10.95€) and Coelorrhina hornimani (slightly bigger, also shiny green but with red head and yellow markings, 19.99€). I'd rather have more than two individual beetles for a healthy colony, so was planning to go with the former.
EXCEPT! I took a look around the isopod site (they're also selling spring tails and general terrarium stuff like substrates and stuff, so I started looking) and apparently they also sell beetle larvae. Of way, way more species than the local pet store. (they even have the purple subspecies of the first beetle, Chlorocala africana oertzeni. I mean, they are out of stock now, but they're listed, so I take it they could come back at some point. Iridescent purple!)
Well, they're just larvae, so it would take time, possibly months before they'd be actual beetles, but on the other hand, a larva of a C. hornimani is 4.50€. So, starting a colony would be quite a bit more achievable with less of a starting budget, that's a quarter of the adult's price tag. Plus, I'd still have the isopods to look at and help keep the ADHD at bay in the meantime.
I feel this opens up some new possibilities to consider.

New additions to the beetle family~! ☀️
This is a pair of species called Chlorocala Africana Camerunica and here is a little fact; these guys are even smaller than the small beetles I have!
But man, they are pretty beetles. If you view them from certain angle and light is shining just right on them they look kind of golden. You can actually see a hint of orange in the first picture from the beetle on the bottom.

Now that the scorpion has been excluded from my plans (for now) for space reasons, the semifinals of the choosing the bookshelf bugs are between beetles and isopods.
Flower beetles (Chlorocala africana camerunica):
Shiny, will hang around as larva eating dirt (kinda) for 6-10 months, and graduate into shiny fruit eating beetles for roughly the same span of time. Could potentially get like a group of four, that might keep making more beetles? Slightly more
Cost: 10,95€ each
Isopods (varied species, haven't chosen):
Funny little critters, some of which can roll into a ball, depending on species. Could be fun to watch scurrying around, but might prefer hiding? Though, on a plus side, isopods are born already looking like isopods, so there would be less of a generational gap.
Cost: 10-16€ for a colony of ten (unless it's the Panda King option, which would be 60€.)
The enclosure would be about the same for either option.
So. Beetles would be arguably more interesting (I cannot emphasize how much the shinyness is affecting my decision making), being visible, out in the open and colourful (while adult), though the isopods get points for being quite a bit more affordable (unless Panda King) and looking like isopods at all perceivable life stages. On the other hand, more chances to fuck it up with the beetles than the isopods, as the group would be smaller and individual cost larger.

Hi! I was hoping to get some recommendations for beginner beetles? I've had bugs before, but only mantids. Beetles are so cute but I don't know which ones to look into getting.
oh sorry, unfortunately i also only ever had mantids and grasshoppers and know relatively little about beetles!it also really depends on where in the world you live and whats available.
what i do know is that cetoniidae are great for beginners. they come in all kinds of beautiful colors and variations, are available almost everywhere, and are relatively uncomplicated. the one i know off the top of my head that ive heard recommended a lot is chlorocala africana!im sure you can find someone who knows more about beetles just looking at the people i reblog from or in the bugblr tag, good luck and id love to hear/see news about your beetle adventure!

Oh look, it’s the gentlemen that’s keeping all of us on our toes tonight :D! *hands Alex a 100x100 Rubik’s cube and blue lipstick* Alex, what is your favourite insect? I love insects myself, and my current fascination is the orchid mantis- A species that looks like an orchid but is actually a predator in disguise, ready to attack you with its claws! They’re absolutely gorgeous.
Alex: “Incredible.. Thank you! I’m very excited to solve this Rubix cube, as my current has been completed numerous times, again and again.” ( But why have I been given a women’s cosmetic item? Humans are strange..)
Alex: “The orchid mantis is beautiful, indeed. A clear example of evolution at it’s finest. Predators, camouflage, and the thrill of the hunt.. it’s a fascinating concept. My current fascination is the Chlorocala africana oertzeni . It’s beautiful..! Breath taking.. I met a girl who’s hair shares a likeness to it.. (I wonder if she would like one as a gift?)
