I was so suprised when I first found out that Chlerek (Chloe/Derek from The Darkest Powers trilogy) wasn't originally Kelley Armstrong's plan, because they're up there in my list of favorite book couples. But yeah, her original plan was to have Chloe/Simon happen and have Derek and Chloe as just friends. She didn't expect Derek to be a popular character. But because of how much fans ended up loving the Chloe/Derek relationship after the first book, she decided to change it.
But in a way, it ended up being even more perfect. The first book was truly just about Derek and Chloe becoming friends and learning to trust each other, while the hints of romance didn't start happening until the second book. I like that they had a solid friendship before they started crushing on each other.

“You haven’t laughed in a long time, and I guess I was staring ‘cause I forgot what that looked like.” - you already knoooooow chlerek
“Simon makes me laugh. You make me laugh. I guess...I just tend to be more serious when we are on the run from people who want to kill me.” He smiled softly at his girlfriend and reached across the table to hold her hand. “I’m sorry. As soon as we get to whatever safe house we are going to then maybe I’ll have to work on the laughing again. And the math. God, I miss math.” His grin was only a bit wolfish as he brought her hand up to his mouth to kiss it. “I’m the only one who can see, hear, and smell things that others can’t and I’m afraid to do anything that will hamper that.”

Hey, that thing was more vicious than a pit bull. I was at a park with Simon, kicking a ball. All of a sudden, this little rat dog comes tearing out of nowhere, jumps up, and clamps down on my hand. Wouldn't let go. I'm shaking it, and the owner's yelling at me not to hurt little Tito. I finally get the dog off. I'm bleeding all over the place and the guy never even apologizes.

So I just reread the Darkest Powers series for the umpteenth time and while Chlerek consumes my soul yet again, I have to wonder what else is there? I know there’s the Darkest Rising series (which I have yet to read) and apparently some other novellas? What all other content is there in that universe? Help?

I was tagged by @shauds02
Rules: Answer the questions and then tag 9 others.
Top 3 Ships: I have been a Zutara stan since like 2006 when my dad and I would watch the series together as it aired. I shipped it before I even knew what shipping was. Chlerek from The Darkest Powers trilogy by Kelly Armstrong has a special place in my heart since those were the first fics I read on FFN back in middle school. I love all Jason ships because I am but a simple woman who wants to see this man be happy and loved, but I think my favorite for him is a tie between JayRoy and JayDick, there’s lots of potential there.
Special mention to Traught from the Young Justice cartoon, since that ship inspired me to actually start writing fic, even if they never got published.
Last Song: Sing Along - Sturgill Simpson
Last Movie: I watched part of John Wick 2 with my parents last night, but before that I think the last movie i sat down to actually watch in full was Birds of Prey with @captainlordauditor in theatres back in February? I don’t sit down and watch movies very often.
Currently Reading: Good Omens by Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett. I’ve been working through it pretty slowly because I keep getting distracted by fics.
What food are you craving right now?: Nothing really, I just ate dinner. Maybe something sweet?
I’m tagging @captainlordauditor, @wellthatjusthappend, @mothervvoid, @jasonsballsack, @oscarbilde, @sparkstime, @belovedbratwonder, @imatrashcannotatrashcant, and @cthulhuvsgodzilla

An announcement!!!!!
I will be posting both The Return Chapter 2 and Never As It Seems Chapter 2 tomorrow. However, i will be going out of town tomorrow, so it will ether be really late tomorrow night that I’ll post them, or super early Saturday morning. Either way, they will be posted!
I used to have this long ass editing process, but it feels unnecessary at this point. I’ve come to realize that the stories i post here are more so practice ones that i hope will help me assist in writing my personal book series. Therefore, if there are any writing mistakes, i do apologize, but i will not be fretting over it as much as i did previously.
I’m pretty excited about this though!
I will be posting the people who had wished to be tagged to the continuing stories when i post. If anyone wants to be tagged in either of the story updates tomorrow or the Season Of The Witch story (Darkest Powers trilogy fanfiction), then please just let me know!!!!!!

what are your favorite slow burn book romances?
Ron/Hermione (Harry Potter) With HP being seven books long and Ron and Hermione not getting together until near the end of the last book, you don't get much more slow burn than them. It was great to see them go from being two people who typically annoyed each other, to best friends, and then eventually to lovers. And there was so much teasing and angst throughout their development that the moment they finally kissed was so satisfying.)
Peeta/Katniss (The Hunger Games) A very long and angsty fake dating trope. It was fun to read their development from Katniss' perspective and see the line between fake and real begin to really blur for her in CF.
Derek/Chloe (The Darkest Powers) What's funny about this ship is that they weren't originally going to be canon. The author was going to go with the Simon/Chloe pairing instead but because of how popular Chlerek ended up being after the first book, she changed her mind. One of the few times where fanservice was a good thing. But because they weren't originally planned, the first book was truly just about them becoming friends while the romance didn't start kicking in until the second book, which was nice).
Cas/Swift (The Abyss Surrounds Us) Tragically, the only non-het couple on this list. (I really like Simon/Baz from Carry On but they were a bit fast-paced for my taste). BUT CAS AND SWIFT ARE THE SLOW BURN ENEMIES-TO-RELUCTLANT FRIENDS-TO-LOVERS F/F ship that I deserved! The pace of their relationship felt natural and not at all forced, despite the fact that they start off in a uncomfortable place. Plus gay women in a pirate setting.
Max/Fang (Maximum Ride) Ohhhhh Maximum Ride. The series became a trainwreck but the first three books were so good. And Max/Fang had good buildup as a best friends-to-lovers trope.
It's been a long time since i've read them so I don't remember how exactly slow burn they were but I think Alex/Brittany and Carlos/Kiara from the Perfect Chemistry series were both well developed romances as far as one book romances go.
Honorable mentions to Adrian/Sydney from Bloodlines and Damon/Bonnie from the TVD books. Adrian/Sydney had perfect development in the first two books but kind of got messed up after that. And Damon/Bonnie would have been beautifully built up if they had the chance to happen.

♟ : Patching up a wound
Derek was quiet as he washed out the cut on her arm. It wasn’t too deep, thankfully. If it had been then it wouldn’t be him worrying over her in this moment. Her aunt still was not happy that he had insisted. She was a doctor, after all, but he had to be the one. There was nothing more that he wanted than to be there for her every time she was hurt. They tried to argue with him but he won. He always would for Chloe. The boy quickly put the ointment on and then wrapped it with a protective bandage. “Now,” he started as he moved to sit beside her. “Be careful with it. I don’t want it to get worse.”

An hour after the attack—or the near miss of one—Derek had chased after the Cabal sorcerers in an attempt to get answers, but soon returned with no luck and quickly changed gears to calling Kit, Simon and Tori.  Tori and Simon didn't pick up, which wasn't all too surprising given it was early in the morning.  Simon had gone to a party last night and had most likely decided to spend the night.  Kit, though, Kit picked up almost immediately.  “What the hell was the Cabal doing there?”  Kit's voice pierced through the night's silence.  “Why were they protecting you?  And a werewolf?”  He sounded panicked and outraged.  “I'm coming down now.  Don't go to your classes.  Call of work—do whatever you need to.  Just don't leave your apartment!”
The line went dead after Derek promised they would do as he said.  I stared out the kitchen window, watching the sky slowly get lighter and lighter as the sun began to rise.  I wished I could go back to sleep and pretend none of this had ever happened, but I knew the moment I closed my eyes again I'd see that werewolf's glowing eyes.  Swallowing thickly, and pushing down the tang of bile that rose in the back of my throat, I looked at Derek.  “What's happening?”  I asked, my voice barely above a whisper.  “I thought—I thought we were d—done with all of this. Af—after Edison . . .”
“We are done with this.”  Derek said, his green eyes flashing with half concealed wildness.  He kneeled down in front of where I sat and reached up to cup my cheeks between his hands. “Don't worry, Chloe.  I promise you that we are done with this.  We are never getting sucked back in again.”
I leaned into his hand and closed my eyes.  A part of me wished I wasn't such a coward.  That I would confide in him what was going on with me.  What was possibly—probably--happening to my mind.  I'd debated telling him for a while, especially after the bunny incident.  But now with this—whatever this was . . . it was an excuse for me to hide my secret a bit longer.  And I latched onto that excuse with everything I had.
Derek's phone began to ring again and he quickly picked it up.  “Simon?”  He answered.  “Simon, where are you?”  Derek told Simon everything that had happened.  How the werewolf had gotten in, how she'd almost attacked me, how the Cabal save us.  They talked for a while, and I don't know when, but soon, I think, soon after they started my mind was lost.  Everything was fuzzy and everything sounded like it was underwater.  And I didn't care.
“Chloe?  Chloe,” Derek's hand touched my shoulder, jostling my mind back to the now.
“Huh?  Sorry,” I blinked several times.  “What time is it?”  How long had I been out?  I looked at the digital clock above the stove and winced.  A full hour had passed—well, and hour and thirteen minutes, technically.  “Sorry,” I said again, noticing Derek's worried gaze.  “I'm just tired, I guess.”  He nodded his head I understanding but the flicker of worry was still there.  He'd be watching me a bit more closely from now on, I know it.  Maybe that's a good thing.
“Simon's coming home, but he's gotta stop off at work and grab a few things first.”
“What?  But Kit said not to do that.”
Derek winced and rubbed the back of his neck, “I know, I tried to get him to come straight home but he was insistent.  He must have left something really important in his work locker or something.  Maybe his drawing books . . . “ he shook his head, “You know how stubborn Simon can be.  It was faster to agree to his pit stop than to try and convince him to come straight home.” I smiled.  He had a point.  Sometimes it was faster just to step aside and let Simon do his thing.  “So,” Derek said abruptly, a devious, wolfish smile stretching across his face. “Since we're stuck in here until Kit gets here, why don't we enjoy it, huh?”  He opened up a pantry door and pulled out pancake mix. “I say we make a big breakfast and then get in to bed and watch Netflix.”
I laughed as he waggled his eye brows, “Derek!  Did you just proposition me with Netflix and Chill?” A loud, cruel cackle escaped my lips as I threw my head back in disbelief.
“Maybe,” he growled and prowled towards me.  “Maybe this Cabal thing is the best excuse for a vacation we've gotten in years.”  He bent low and nuzzled me neck, breathing in my scent, and hummed.
I turned my head slowly, my nose tracing a line over his brow.  He gazed up at me, a soft smile on his lips and a twinkle of mischief in his eyes.  Humming, I brushed my lips against the bridge of his nose.  “So what do you think?”  He asked, a low rumble sounding from his chest.
“I think,” I breathed out, a small smile now gracing my own lips, mirroring his.  “I think you'd better get started on those pancakes.”
Nipping at my earlobe, making me shiver by using his canines, Derek then gave me a quick peck to my cheek before bouncing backwards and pulling out more ingredients.
We ate, playfully stealing bites of gooey pancake off of each others plates, making ourselves absolute messes while doing so.  Then we showered together.  I loved washing Derek's hair.  It always made him purr like a kitten and felt so soft and silky twirling through my fingers.  We made it into bed, naked and still damp from the shower, and barely decided on a movie when Derek began to drag his fingers up and down my hip and ribs.
Derek was right, I thought hours later as I curled into Derek's side.  My nose nuzzled the curve of his neck and he hummed a satisfied hum as he dragged his fingers down the ridges of my spine. The sounds of Spock and Kirk fighting some bad guys played out in the background.  We'd probably need to take another shower before Simon got back, I thought idly.  Then wondered when that would be.  Enough time had passed.  Should we be concerned? Before I could bring it up, Derek's phone began to ring.  He groaned and stretched his arms high above his head.  I kissed his chest lightly before he rolled off the mattress to get his phone.  “It's Simon,” he told me before answering.  I let out a sigh of relief and then got off the bed myself, heading for the bathroom.
Steam flooded into the room once I finished my shower and re-entered our bedroom.  Tucking a towel around mt body, I stepped towards the closet, but stopped when I saw Derek's face.  “Derek?”  I asked hesitantly, taking a step towards him.  His phone was on the floor, lying there as if it'd slipped from his hand.  “Derek, what's wrong?”
His eyes found mine, and I was shocked to see tears glistening in them.  “It's Simon,” he started and my breath caught in my throat.  “He's with the Cabal.”

“He balled up my discarded sweatshirt and put it against his shoulder. “Go on,” he said. “I don’t bite.” “And from what I hear, that’s a good thing.” He gave a rumbling chuckle. “Yeah, it is.” I leaned against his shoulder.”
