Incorrect Quotes: West Side Story Edition
Riff: Am I a good person? No. But do I try to be better every single day? Also no.
Chino: I'm having problems with a guy…
Riff: Like his dead body won't fit into your trunk kind of problems, or you like him kind of problems?
Maria, talking about Tony: WHAT THE FRICK I WAS ARGUING WITH THEM AND I SAID “OOH YOU WANNA KISS ME SO BAD” AND GUESS WHAT? THEY DID. THEY KISSED ME. WHAT THE FRICK WHAT DO I DO.
Anita: Assert your dominance over your friends by kicking them in the face, and then giving them a little smooch on the forehead!
Chino: And I’d love to be sorry for that, but we all know I’ve done much, much worse.
Riff: I am a ninja.
Bernardo: No, you’re not.
Riff: Did you see me do that?
Bernardo: Do what?
Riff: Exactly.
Tony: I have a problem.
Riff: If it's harder than 2+2, I can't help.
Anita, looking at their watch: It has been 2 hours and sixteen minutes since I’ve been insulted.
Anita: It’s been about 5 seconds since I’ve been assaulted, but let’s not talk about that.
Riff: Get in, loser, we’re committing vehicular manslaughter!
Maria: Tony annoyed me today so I told them that I can’t wait to see what they have planned for our special day tomorrow.
Bernardo: There is nothing special about tomorrow.
Maria: But there is something special about watching the color leave their face as panic takes over.

Imagine how happy Bernardo must've been for Chino when he finally got into night school for accounting. He had to learn English really quickly in order to get in.
"Felicidades buddy-boy. I knew you'd make it"
Chino believes that without Bernardo he wouldn't have made it. He helped him from day one.

Chino is such a gentle boy, he would never hurt anyone. So why did he? Let's unpack
All Chino ever wanted was to be there to protect the Puerto Ricans like Bernardo. He wanted it so bad that he was willing to help Tony get into the salt shed if it meant he could follow suit.
When he came into the salt shed, he was immediately met with Bernardo's disapproving gaze. But Chino was there to protect his people, and by god, would he.
Once the switchblades came out, tensions were higher than a kite. One wrong move meant the loss of a limb. One right move, that limb is the least of your worries.
Most people think that the turning point was Bernardo's death, but I disagree.
Chino saw that knife plunge into Riff's chest, saw him stagger backward, saw him fall, and die. He saw the sweat, the blood, the tears, the fear in Bernardo's gaze. When he witnessed his best friend taking a life, I truly think that that is what made him capable of murder.
In that moment, he didn't *want* to kill anyone. He just wanted to turn back time, undo it all. But Chino is a smart boy, and it can't have been too long before it occurred to him what had to happen next.
When Chino saw that knife enter Tony’s hand, and then pierce Bernardo's skin, it was all over. He knew what he had to do, but not how to do it. And then he saw the gun.
He might've, probably would've chickened out. He's strong, but he's not a murderer. He's gentle. But when Tony came around, asking for death, beckoning and welcoming him, something shifted.
He was furious that this boy who took everything from him had the gall to come out and say he knew the weight of his actions. How dare he assume that sacrifice could equal forgiveness.
But at the same time, it was his own fault. He let Tony into the shed. He set off the chain of reactions. Tony needed to pay for his crimes, but Chino knew he wasn't blame free either. What could he do, to get justice for what he did?
With that in mind, he pulled the trigger.

Chino: I can’t understand why you don’t like me! I have nice hair, a very pleasant smile, a cheerful personality, a kind face, and a heart full of love. If you add up all my features, I think you’d get a pretty attractive answer.
María: Maybe you added wrong.
