every chinatown has a different vibe based on historical context. it was kind of a really pleasant surprise to see that in cowtown/conservative oil country, that the chinatown was so hardcore, like they have an alley way with pick axes on display. but that's also because the current one is in it's third iteration and it's been burned down plus scapegoating for various disease and race riots and stuff. while i was researching the archives for my own city, over and over again, the prominent members were conservative chinese whose prerogative was to please white canadians even if that meant making life harder for the residents. and then you also find out that the united church made it so that the chinese who would achieve class mobility were bootlicking christian-conservatives who don't give af about the working class chinese ppl or chinese women. i can't tell you disgusted i was w the reoccurring theme that ppl from our homeland "need religion in their lives" and "old religion was savage and uncouth" and how chinese people were "distrustful" of higher status representatives. it was never metropolitan enough to ever rely on traditional clans or tong like in other cities either... so rn chinatown is half of a ghost town because of these class traitor race traitor christian men who want to see 'old ways' eradicated in favour of assimilating to the white christian ethnostate. so ofc they would be present in the archives ugh. like we have the same railroad worker history, but because of the united church and being so close to the bible belt... the vibe is much different..

Via FB, Mark Prosser shares his latest painting, 'The Gates'.
“This is one of my very first memories of downtown Vancouver. My very first office job was at Carrall and East Hastings and so I used to walk past these gates every single day. On my breaks I would go to the Dr Sun Yat Sen garden and just sit there. It was my very first sanctuary in the city that I had just moved to. It was 1998 and even though I had met very few friends here I knew it was home, the excitement of this city grabbed me at the core and its never let go. Vancouvers Chinatown has a rich history and the cultural importance is beyond measure. I wanted to capture hope, excitement and the intial feeling of embarking on a new adventure. 20" by 20", uv reactive, acrylic and Fluorescents on canvas. Thank you for having a look at my art!” https://www.prosserart.com

Can you tell me how to get... how to get to Pender St? ♫♪
Chinatown in Vancouver is a beautiful place. Every corner of this tight neighbourhood provides intrigue galore! From the vibrant shops, to the varied facades, to the very shadows... every angle is photogenic.
"Big Dragon Energy" is a memento of sorts capturing a particular moment in time from a particular vantage point. Daylight shining on golden lamp post ornaments in the foreground casts a dragon shadow across a shop sign in the background. This view on Pender St is limited in time, but I made it available on different things to wear or stick or protect your phone with. Just visit my Redbubble shop to check it out :)
