its very weird growing up and doing art all the time, being an artist in your teens and doing commissions, being an artist in your 20s and doing work in the art industry, and then realizing you have hit a point where art isn't fun anymore. that you no longer derive joy from the act of creating art. its just frustration. giving up early. never being happy enough to follow through on anything you finish. its like a core piece of your identity just vanished into thin air and left you hollow.
idk. i've so long grown exhausted of thinking "i'll get my spark back one day". i'm terrified of the idea that i just won't.

September 2021 AMA Answers!
I got a few questions from Patrons this month, and here are the answers! :>

Aquason asks:
Do you have any specific artistic influences?
This question is actually difficult because I have MANY artistic influences! I'm always interested in trying out techniques that I see in others' art to see what sticks to my own. As far as specific artists go, I really look up to Kylee Henke, Chikuto, MasaeAnela...the list goes on and on! :>
Most usually I'm pretty heavily influenced by my favorite series at the time: so right now it's TWGOK, but in the past it's been Detective Conan, Tales Games, Inuyasha, etc.
For style influence, chibi work and cute anime is usually a go to. Sanrio, Animal Crossing, Paper Mario, TWGOK (again, it's very cute) - though if I'm looking for a different feel, I can look at other sources too like Professor Layton, pixel art, Tim Burton, etc.
Any favourite childhood books?
I actually didn't read too much as a kid @v@ I do remember one book series though that I've never seen ANYONE talk about and that's Chris d'Lacey's The Fire Within books. I got the first few at the good ol' Scholastic Book Fair and then bought the rest up to The Fire Eternal (apparently there's a Fire World book too but I don't recall reading that??). I don't remember much about it other than the characters craft little dragons from clay and if they have uhhhh a pure heart (or something?) the dragons actually come to life and are kinda like little familiars. The main dragon I remember is Gadzooks. I also remember reading all of the third book, Fire Star, in one day in bed and CRYING my eyes out at the end of it xD
What's your favourite ice cream flavour?
Gosh, that's a hard one. I really like orange creamsicles but idk if that counts as a flavor of basic ice cream :x Honestly I may have to go with just Vanilla. I don't like a lot of stuff loaded in my sweets nowadays - plain and simple is my go to :>

KLJF;LKSAFL This is a cruel question x'D ...To...to make it less cruel to my babies, I'm gonna give myself a few categories to work with.
Favorite design: Sheri. ..........Look I KNOW she's a mess but she's MY mess okay I just think she's super fun :p
Favorite to draw: Hmmm. Apolda or Jerel o: I just find them fun to draw (surprising with Apolda since her hair is more detailed than usual, but I found an easy way to do it so (ovo)b)
Favorite to write: Riven. The fact that she just does not give a fuck about most things is REALLY amusing and often really easy to write :p

-Relationships-
Lillian - Birth Mother. Though she died when Punchy was little, Punchy still has fond memories of her late Khonsuran mother. Even now, as a young adult, she still misses her hippie mama.
Robert Demers - Birth Father. Punchy was nervous about him at first when she was taken into his care- following her mother’s death. Over time though she did come to realize that he was a good man and cared deeply for her. Shame he disappeared.
Roseyln Demers - Stepmother. The silver-tongued viper of the Demers Family. Punchy refuses to talk about her. Too many bad memories.
Jr. Demers - Older stepbrother. Punchy has nothing nice to say about this little sheep.
Philip Demers - Younger stepbrother. One of the only good things- aside from her father- that made living in the Demers household bearable.
Gaz - Love/Hate Relationship????? Its....unknown how these two feel about each other. Sure, there’s no doubt they care about each other to some degree, but it doesn’t clear up much. Some days they can treat each other like old friends, while other days they’ll be verbally at each other's throats.
Caelan - Older Brother figure. Out of everyone that makes up the catacomb trio, Punchy is surprisingly very close to Caelan. It’s not uncommon to find the two either sparing in the catacombs whenever Caelan isn’t doing something for Gaz or having a conversation in Khonsur dialect much to the annoyance of Gaz who tries to eavesdrop on them now and again. The two are very protective of each other to a high degree.
Alice - Older Sister figure. The second person in the trio that Punchy is close to. She always goes to Alice if she needs advice, or needs to vent to someone. Fun Fact: Alice is the one who gave Punchy the idea for braiding a small bit of her hair- and attaching her necklace to it.
Jocelyne Babineaux ( @queeniiicorn‘s OC) - Best Friend. One of the few Arcadian nobles that Punchy DOESN’T want to drop-kick on sight. It’s still a mystery to a lot of people how the charming and intelligent youngest daughter of the intimidating, gun-slinging Babineaux family and the short-tempered and stubborn illegitimate child of the Demers family became such close friends.

-Extra Fun Facts-
+Punchy’s star sign is Gemini
+ The Moonstone necklace that she wears was given to her by her mother before she died. The reason she wears it in her hair rather then around her neck is that she worries about someone grabbing it and ripping it off her neck if she’s not careful.
+ If anyone asks her about the bandage around her neck, she’ll change the subject. Only a select few people that Punchy trusts know what the neck bandage is about.
+ There’s a rumor that, when Punchy turned 16, Gaz give her a small box full of valuable jewelry and some money. Where he got it no one knows- but it’s implied that he might have blackmailed either Punchy’s stepmother- or at least someone in the Demers’ family- to get it. Why? No one is entirely sure. All that is known is that Punchy uses this newfound wealth to help the dwellers....and keeps it well hidden within the catacombs.
+ Punchy dreams of one day starting a school/home for the young children and teens that live in the catacomb. Though currently, that dream seems far off- and even near impossible- that doesn’t stop Punchy from putting away half of whatever money she gets from fishing/side jobs towards that dream.

Top 3 universe I want to join : Marvel because I love all my superhero boys and girls so much!! God, it’d be both terrifying and awesome to live in that universe. Actually I did it hoping to cheer up Chikuto and people in the community. (I’ve posted sth a round 1/20 of what I was intended to by now? Of even 1/50th. So what? Look, I can do at least this! And the day will come when I finish something else!) And of course to cheer up myself after reading RTFM to GIMP 2.6. Before I did it I felt like I had a nail to batter down and a swiss multitool to do it %-/ Why wouldn’t even an eraser simply work the way it did in PainBrush?? Why was it such a quest of sorts to find RGB curves? And it was next to impossible to find the layers tab once I shut it down occasionally.. Not ACD, not Paint.NET… I expected some tiny editor just to do something, and I met this monster unarmed. Okay, at least its performance is next to perfect on a laptop with a 4 Gb flash card instead of a hard drive and archaic bare Linux Mint on it. (The OS is mostly looping in RAM during the session; it was initially designed for slow curves as for to avoid dumps. And while Google Chrome did terrible things to speed of work, GIMP never lagged a second. I praise it already, really. It couldn’t be more simply with that amount of tools, but it looks and works the way it should. I’d have tried it on Windows already if I had some.)

So I rewatched Gravity Falls for the first time after going through a rough start this year, and I remembered a short comic I really wanted to do after the series ended. Here’s a lil preview of the first two pages - I’ll upload the whole thing once I’m done, hopefully!
It’s based on the idea that Stan didn’t immediately remember everything after the end of the show, and the comic deals with the consequnces of him remembering Bill some years later. I’m basically throwing my lot in with the 504068 other people and their “bill comes back” ideas \o/

The next few coming weeks and tumblr’s new “safe” mode?
So I just wanted to make a mild update post as a reminder that next week I’ll be posting prompts from the 10,000 followers thing I had a while back! Then the week after that will be Breath of the Wild again, and the week after THAT will be a week dedicated to Clockwork - a great webcomic by Chikuto! I highly recommend checking it out before that week of comics comes so you can know what’s going on!
...Also, uh, apparently tumblr has a new “safe” mode that people under 18 can’t turn off and it’s..........very not good I’ve heard? As in, doesn’t function AT ALL not good?
I was going to say “please let me know if you can’t see my blog” but I guess that might be difficult to let me know if you can’t see my blog

Hi Chikuto! Thank you for being a really awesome artist and also giving the best art advice. Sorry if this is too personal or you just don't want to answer, but I was wondering if your depression still causes you really bad art block. I've gotten to the point with mine that I can't even picture what I want my art to even remotely look like anymore. Do you have any exercises that get you over that hump? Does it also happen with your writing? Thank you for a being a huge inspiration.
I don’t think there’s a eureka moment where the depression falls away and the art drive comes back. I personally feel like depression is a dam holding back the creative flow. It’s impossible to tear it all down at once, but the good days chip away at it little by little - and if I’m lucky some inspiration will trickle through.
I suppose that can sound good or bad depending on how you think about it. Before my big depression hit this year, I was really ontop of my shit - I mean, I did an entire Gravity Falls comic just out of the blue. I was working hard on Clockwork. When my brother died those things just became so inconsiquential, no matter how well recieved they were (yes follower count, I see you tank every time I post something that isn’t the GF comic).
But those felt like obligations. What really sorta got me drawing again was mindless self indulgence. I definitely wouldn’t have been able to do it on my own; some of my OC crazy friends pulled me into their group and we’ve been RPing and jamming out about our OCs and generally just having a chill time. I dusted off my baby Char Star and I’ve been having a blast just getting excited with other people about OCs and RP and stuff. It’s a nice change and a breath of fresh air.
That doesn’t mean my comic projects are dead - Clockwork will never die, and maybe if I get another Gravity Falls surge I’ll keep going with that comic. But right now I’m just sorta chilling. Doing what’s best for me.
tl;dr: self indulgence, being social, becoming a healthier you will reflect upon your art also. i was also told “JUST SELF-INDULGE” when i was depressed, and didn’t really know what it meant until I found out what it meant for me. I hope you feel better soon and find your spark again.
