Chef Hob is the new cook for the boarding school that Orpheus attends (Robyn attends as well with the steep tuition discount Hob gets as staff,,,,,,,one of the reasons Hob took the job). Orpheus has never tasted food the way that Mr. Hob makes it before. Everything tastes so good and interesting (the cooks at home are sooooo boring).
So when he goes home for breaks he keeps asking his dad and the cooks at home to make things taste like Mr. Hob does! Since neither Dream nor his team of live-in cooks know how to translate young teenager descriptions into food flavors, they and Orpheus are at a loss.
Dream decides to be somewhat proactive -- there is only so long he can stare at Orpheus's sad, woeful, face - next time he goes to pick Orpheus up, he asks him to introduce him to this amazing chef, Mr. Hob.
👨🏼‍🍳❤️👨🏼‍🍳🩷👨🏼‍🍳
It's the beginning of break and Hob is in the kitchen, with Robyn, working in menus for the meals for the small number of kids who stay on campus during the break (Hob hates how some of these rich parents treat their kids, leaving them alone over a holiday period at a mostly empty school. It's horrible.) Hob tries to make the foods especially fun for the left behind kids,,,,even planning some meals where the kids can cook with him. There's a reason all the kids think Mr. Hob is cool.
Any way, Hob and Robyn are in the school kitchen together (Hob is forever grateful that his boy still likes to hang with his old man.) when the most beautiful man walks into the kitchen. He's being pulled along by a kid Hob recognizes, Orpheus.
Orpheus shyly introduces his father to Hob (who happens to be staring at Hob as much as Hob is staring at him). Dream didn’t think school "lunch ladies" were allowed to be as attractive as Mr. Hob.
Alsksjdhsbav such a great au concept!!! I love it!!!!
Hob ends up showing Orpheus's dad around the kitchen, plus showing him the menus he's been planning out. Dream is suddenly acting like food is the most interesting thing in the world to him - Orpheus is very confused, because his dad would totally live off pizza rolls if he didn't have cooks making his meals. But he shrugs it off and goes to join Robyn making brownies. Orpheus enjoys baking - when he's not busy with his music, he does his best to attend the fun baking club that Mr Hob runs for the students at weekends.
Meanwhile, Hob is rambling on about the nutritious foods he likes to make for the kids, how he's really passionate about fostering a healthy relationship with food while they're young... Dream is hanging off his every word as Hob talks about the different dietary restrictions he caters for, how he got really into vegan food because of the kids, how he'd like to do more in the community but he doesn't have time to do much except occasionally run a charity bakesale. Dream thinks he is the most beautiful and interesting man in the entire world.
Eventually Hob gives Dream a copy of his recipe folder to take home, and he must see the way Dream looks a little bit helpless, because he laughs and offers to give a quick 'cooking 101' demonstration. Dream does not mention that they have chefs at home who could handle the recipes. He's too busy watching Hob dismantle an onion. Dream has never wanted to be a vegetable so much in his entire life.
Orpheus glances over, and even with his limited worldly experience, he can see that his dad is totally whipped for Mr Hob. Orpheus thinks that this is a good thing. For a start, maybe his dad will start eating better. And even better, if they start dating, Mr Hob will come over to their house and Orpheus will get to eat his cooking! He needs to encourage this relationship as much as possible. (And hey. It would be cool to see Robyn more, too. He makes GREAT brownies.)

Hob is a chef who owns a food truck selling authentic Indian food, and Dream is someone who doesn't really eat well. (He had a bad breakup a year ago and it caused him to eat less. He's trying to eat better with his siblings' help.)
Dream agrees to go with Death to one of those food truck fairs for her birthday. There's not a lot of people yet so some of the staff offer them free samples to entice them into eating more from their food truck.
Death is having the time of her life, and she thanks Dream for going with her even if this isn't his thing at all.
Dream says that he enjoys the atmosphere (a.k.a. no huge crowds yet) and appreciates the aesthetic of the food they have already eaten: the understated elegance of the mango bingsoo, the dancing bonito flakes on top of the takoyaki, and the satisfying cheese pulls from the megruli khachapuri.
Death, encouraged by his interest, asks him to pick another food that he likes the aesthetic of so they could try it next. Like before, it's understood that they'll share a serving so Dream doesn't have to worry if he can't eat a lot.
Dream agrees. He picks an appetizing-looking plate of butter chicken from a foodtruck selling Indian food near the edge of the fair grounds, where not a lot of people have ventured yet.
They are greeted enthusiastically by a very handsome man and Death does all the talking because Dream is distracted by his forearms and smile and manbun. (He's salivating, so he must be hungry. Right?)
The handsome man turns out to be both the chef and the owner, and he chats with Death while he prepares the food. His name is Hob. He quit his job at a fancy hotel because he wants to feel more connected with his customers and share the food that he loves cooking for his family. (Dream is falling for him the more he talks. He doesn't realize that he has yet to speak and has only been staring.) (Hob is highly intimidated by him but also thinks he's cute.)
The food is served. Death takes her first bite and says something like 'holy shit dude wow this is great' and Hob is just about to thank her when Dream takes his first bite and lets out the most sinful moan Hob has ever heard this side of his laptop screen.
He is (understandably) frozen in place, staring at this beautiful man devour his food while sounding like a porn star. He may or may not be violating food safety standards by getting hard in his jeans in the truck's kitchen area.
Death is astonished because Dream has never shown this much enthusiasm while eating before. Even when they were kids. She is now looking at Hob speculatively. Should she google 'how to politely ask a stranger to (please) marry your brother'?
Dream...honestly doesn't even notice anything other than how delicious the food tastes. When the plate is clean, and Death has only gotten to take that single bite at the start, he reddens and apologizes, but Death waves it off, and Hob says something like, "I have some dessert too, if you want."
Dream unconsciously licks his lips and says, "Please," in a voice that could either mean 'Yes, please, I want some dessert,' or 'Fuck me raw right now.'
Death, immediately picking up on the sexual tension, says, "We'd like some kulfi, but I'll take mine to go."
And Dream is like, "Sister, what--?"
"I just remembered Desire and I have an appointment to get our nails done so I have to go--oh, thanks, Mr. Gadling--bye Dream, love you, be safe!" And then she's gone.
Dream is left with Hob who is still holding the other kulfi in his hand, looking slightly stunned at Death's very abrupt exit. The kulfi is starting to melt. Dream, unthinkingly, leans forward and sucks the tip.
They both freeze and their eyes meet, Dream's pink mouth still on the kulfi. Hob gulps at the visual. Dream, still maintaining eye contact, licks it from base to tip, then starts sucking in earnest, eyes steadily darkening when he sees Hob's breathing becoming unsteady.
Hob hears some footsteps coming their way, potential customers from the sound of it. Hob hands Dream his kulfi and apologizes to the customers, saying that something came up and he has to close. Like, right now. Sorry for the inconvenience but this is really important.
He closes up in record time while Dream taunts him by enjoying his dessert. He's already sitting on the passenger seat of the truck when Hob climbs into the driver's seat.
Desire's text the next day reads: 'DREAM YOU SLUT IM SO PROUD OF YOU'
Destruction for some reason knows Hob's number and has texted: 'Break my brother's heart and I'll break your spine.'
Dream slowly but surely begins to eat better. How can he not, with all the support he has, and Hob there to love him even on his bad days?
Hob gets everyone's approval, even Destruction's, eventually. He's the best cook and most considerate brother-in-law ever.
When Dream passes by his ex while walking down the street one day, he realizes that he's alright now, and is definitely better off without them. He's actually thankful, because if not for them, then he might not have even met Hob. He doesn't greet them because he still hasn't forgiven them, but he also doesn't feel like bursting into tears anymore.
At the end of the day, when he gets back home, Hob is there to welcome him with a sweet kiss, a warm meal, and a lifetime full of love.

I've had this Dreaming The Proposal AU sitting in my drafts for a while. Then @voukkake comes out with this art and I figured it was time to brush off the dust and share what I'd written lol. This is seriously all I'm going to write so if anyone is interested I'm begging you to pick this up. I'm dying to read Dream awkwardly interacting with Hob's family (also @valiantstarlights suggestion that Betty White is Destiny?? ABSOLUTELY BRILLIANT). Anyway...
------------------
Dream is about to be deported because his visa application has been denied. He is in the middle of a meeting with his lawyers when Hob, his secretary, pops in the room to inform Dream of a very important phone call and Dream comes up with the insane plan to marry Hob to keep his immigration status.
He gestures for Hob to come over and Hob, clueless, wanders into the room and stands next to Dream, who takes him by the arm and tugs him just a little bit further to stand awkwardly close.
Dream announces their engagement and Hob stands there, shell shocked and feels his mouth moving against his will. That yeah, they are getting married. They are in love, sure. It isn’t until they leave the office, following Dream back to his, that Hob’s brain seems to come back online.
“What just happened in there?”
Dream grouses, head down, already back to his work as if nothing happened. Like he didn’t just use Hob as a pawn in his scheme to get around his denied visa application.
“They were going to make Morningstar editor-in-chief.” Is all Dream says, disdain dripping from every word. He still hasn’t looked up.
Hob stands there, still as a statue. His head is swimming with words, with emotions. Anger, disbelief, betrayal… and a small tiny flicker of undeniable interest that he hastily stomps out.
He manages to put the pieces together rather quickly though, while Dream continues sifting through paperwork.
“This is illegal,” Hob manages to croak out, brows furrowing.
“Oh, please. The government looks for terrorists, not book publishers.” Dream’s head is still down in his paperwork.
Hob blinks, taking a step up to Dream’s desk. “I'm not marrying you.”
“Sure you are.” Dream sets aside a stack of papers and finally gives Hob his attention. “Because if you don't, your dreams of ‘touching millions of lives with the written word’ are dead.”
Hob’s jaw drops. That was a line, corny as it was, that he’d used in the panel interview for this job. Three years ago.
----------------------
“Were you not in that room? I could get fined, I’ll go to jail over this. If you want me on this deal, you will promote me to editor.”
Without even glancing up from his phone, Dream scoffs.
“Absolutely not.”
“Well then I guess you’re screwed. Buh-bye.” Hob turns with a flourish and has to bite back a grin at how Dream splutters behind him and grabs him by the arm.
“Fine– fine! Editor.” His face seems to go through the five stages of grief. He drops his hold on Hob.
“And You’ll publish my manuscript.” Hob throws in. In for a penny.
Dream’s brows narrow and he shakes as if he’s physically controlling the urge to stamp his foot.
“Sure. I’ll publish your hack manuscript.”
“Good.” Hob slips his hands in his pants pockets, staring at Dream, deciding on one last nail in the coffin.
“Now do it properly.”
Dream cocks an eyebrow. “Do what properly?”
“Propose. Like you mean it.”
Dream’s entire body seizes up, but he manages not to let it show, distracting himself by slipping his phone in the pocket of his expensive slacks and clasping his hands in front of him.
“Will you marry me?”
“No.” Hob, the arrogant bastard, is visibly biting back a smirk. “Say it like you mean it.”
Dream takes a long, steadying breath through his nose.
“Hob Gadling. Will you–”
“And get on your knees.”
Dream absolutely refuses to decipher the thrill that shoots through his body at Hob’s command. Instead he keeps his mask of irritation and indifference on as he scans the crowd around them. They are still outside the courthouse, and the concrete sidewalk is going to potentially tear Dream’s Hugo Boss black wool pants.
So he carefully lowers himself, scowling as the smirk on Hob’s face only widens as Dream slowly settles onto the ground.
Once he’s as comfortable as Dream’s going to get, he clears his throat.
“Hob Gadling,” he glares at his subordinate from under his lashes. “Will you fucking marry me?”
Hob curls his lips in mock consideration, looking up past Dream’s head. He rocks back on his heels and nods with a forlorn sigh.
“Okay.” He still hasn’t met Dream’s gaze. “Could've done without the sarcasm but it will do. See you at the airport tomorrow.”
And turns and walks away, leaving Dream to fend for himself on the ground.

the sandman episode 6 spoilers !!
There’s just something so charming about Hob’s love for living. Despite everything he went through, especially between the 1500s and 1600s, he still chooses to live for the sole reason of wanting to experience more things, to just LIVE. It’s just comforting to see an immortal character portrayed in such a way, to love their immortality and use it as an opportunity to experience and learn so many different things about the ever-changing world.

Chef!Hob cooks for [*]; Dream is a regular guest/customer who only "eats" plain omelets/dry turkey sandwiches/unadorned oatmeal.
Hob likes being the new chef for [*]. The regulars have been receptive to Hob's addtions to the menu, but there is a single customer who never eats anything but the same thing off the menu. Hob doesn’t want to pry, he understands that people have food allergies and/or that neurodivergent people have needs that should be respected, but pretty goth boy is so thin and quiet,,,,and doesn't really look like he enjoys his plain meal.
So Hob does some research and resolves to try to engage the young man.
Dream likes [*]. They have the simple thing(s) that he eats and people leave him alone to write/draw. Dream knows he has food issues, but it's so hard to find food that he likes.
The handsome new chef probably doesn't see Dream staring at him (he's arresting, his smile and energy make Dream blush). But Hob is so amazing, he couldn't possibly want to know Dream. Except almost as soon as Dream thinks this,,,,hot new chef comes over and introduces himself.
Chef Hob asks Dream if there was anything else he could make for Dream,,, or add to the menu so Dream might have some variety. Hob even says that if Dream has issues with textures, that Hob has been doing some research to adjust some of his favorite recipes so that Dream might be able to try them.
No one, even his own family, had ever made an attempt to cater to Dream food issues.
This is so sweet, my eyes got a little wet.
Gently and kindly, Hob encourages Dream to make a list of the foods that he actually likes to eat. They're mostly plain stuff with reliable textures - Dream confesses that he doesn't really like anything that feels squishy, no matter how much he tries. Hob comes out of his chat with Dream with a pretty decent list of stuff to try. If Dream likes garlic bread, it's fair to assume that he won't mind a little garlic in other dishes. If he likes salty snacks then maybe Hob can try him with some pickled veggies... as long as they're not too squishy.
Dream is doing his best to be brave about it, honestly, when Hob presents him with a whole grazing board of stuff. Some of the stuff is a definite no, but there's some stuff that Dream rather likes. Like pesto pasta. And dark chocolate swiss roll. Those things immediately go onto the menu, which makes Dream blush - why is the hot chef being so nice and catering to Dream’s needs?! It might be because hot chef thinks that hot skinny goth is drop dead gorgeous and deserves a bit of feeding up (and a kiss or two!)

Day 30 - Bakery
[AO3]
“This is where you work now?” A deep, familiar voice says and Hob resists the urge to jump and swear, feeling Dream’s presence nearby as he focuses that the mixing bowls and utensils are clean and in their place for the day shift of the bakery. Even in space, and the fact that capitalism is no longer a thing, and yet things like bakeries persist to bring people fresh bread and desserts is comforting. Sighing, he turns around to see Dream, standing in place as blue eyes flick around.
“Yep,” he smiles, which melts into a frown as Dream looks him up and down, the plain black shirt and pants and apron, the steel-toed boots looked at critically. Dream has a particular expression on his face. “What?”
Dream tilts his head, stepping closer as Hob leans against the stainless steel countertop. “Aren’t you meant to be covered in flour or batter?”
Hob groans, scratching his forehead. “Actually, me being so clean after a full shift of kneading bread and making cakes means I’m at least decent at this job,” he huffs. “My teacher’s when I went to get into this industry drilled it into my head,” he pouts, crossing his arms. Sure, the messy baker with flour on their face and clothes is cute in fiction, but not true to real life, especially in a professional capacity. Home-style, maybe.
Dream frowns and gives him a once-over again, eyes like a brand. “You have flour on your shoes.”
“I always end up with something on my shoes,” Hob sighs and rolls his eyes, stepping forward so he can put his arms around Dream’s waist, “nothing a splash of water won’t fix.”
“And how much longer do you plan to live on this station?” Dream asks, looking around the bakery critically, a small window showing Mars outside, as well as the Milky Way.
“Until they make an all-black space station for my partner, of course,” he drawls, grinning as Dream glares at him, lips pinched. “Are you here to take me home?” He asks, looking around the bakery as he makes sure that everything is in place, and he mopped and cleaned the place nicely for the next shift.
Dream hmphs, hands coming up to frame his face as Dream pulls him into a kiss, eyes melting from a blue to black and stars, a stroke of the Milky Way being shown as Dream pulls away ― and pushes him down onto his bed. Hob hadn’t even noticed, mind only focusing on Dream’s lips and tongue as they kissed. “Surely you will not object to your clothes getting dirty now,” Dream purrs, slithering into his lap.
“That’s what the laundry is for,” he croaks, his hands going up and under Dream’s shirt, scraping pale skin as they kiss more, deep and indulgent as Dream grabs onto his jaw, black nails digging into his beard. The spark of arousal is there, slow and soft as they kiss ― and then Dream grounds down onto him, making him wheeze into Dream’s mouth as his cock gets rapidly interested in the proceedings. “Dream,” he whines as Dream pushes him flat onto the bed.
Above him, Dream smirks, one hand taking off Hob’s shirt while the other unbuttons his pants, cupping his dick roughly, and Hob shivers as a finger presses against his balls, stroking them. “It will be a delight,” Dream whispers, voice hooking deep inside his guts, cock twitching as Dream bites at his collarbone. Hob whimpers, clutching at Dream’s hair desperately as Dream nips down his chest, tongue swirling around his nipples, then down― “to mess up such a man, so good at his job.”
Hob shivers, gasping and closing as a pink mouth reaches his cock, eyes full of the Milky Way staring up at him as Dream swallows him. Hob can only pant and moan Dream’s name as Dream sucks him to a maddening orgasm.

Does Chef Hob have any tattoos?
Prior to Hob's marriage to Dream, his body is free of tattoos. (There had been one crazy moment when Hob was still a culinary student when he got an intrusive thought to get measurement conversions tattooed on his arms so he wouldn't forget them. Thankfully, he had enough sense left in him not to go through with it.)
When Hob gets married to Dream, he couldn't help but notice that sometimes, Dream looks at him uncertainly. Like he's waiting for the other shoe to drop. This happens rarely enough that Hob doesn't want to bring it up, but the fact that it happened more than once has him fantasizing about finding Dream's ex and beating them up for making Dream unsure about Hob's love for him.
(Dream has yet to tell Hob about his ex. He probably never would. But Hob has heard enough threats from Destruction to conclude that whoever Dream's ex was, they treated him so badly that Destruction would never be able to stop worrying about Dream. Even if he has seen firsthand how good Hob is for Dream, and how Dream is very happy with Hob.)
Hob gets an idea just before his and Dream's one-year anniversary that would hopefully assure Dream that he's gonna stay by his side forever.
Hob asks Dream to write his own name on a piece of paper. Dream is confused but does what he's asked to do anyway. He writes Dream Endless in beautiful, flowing cursive that has Hob tearing up a little.
Hob thanks Dream and goes to get Dream's name in Dream's own penmanship tattooed on the skin right above his heart. It's a shame that he had to shave his chest hair around the area, but it was worth it when he saw the finished product, and the tattoo artist assured him that it would still be visible even after his chest hair fully grows back.
Hob belatedly realizes that, since the tattoo was supposed to be a surprise for Dream, he can't exactly get 100% naked around him until the date of their anniversary. And that's like, a month away.
Hob tries to act normally about this. He's still very affectionate with Dream, still services him with his mouth and fingers and cock. He just can't take his shirt off yet.
Dream, whose last relationship was very not good, notices Hob's strange behavior not a couple of days later. Usually Hob would be tearing off his own clothes after getting Dream's completely off him, but not anymore. They're still having incredible sex, but Hob's mind seems to be somewhere else. He takes longer in the bathroom. They no longer fuck in the shower.
Dream gets increasingly upset. Has he done something wrong? Is Hob covering up hickies from someone else and that's why he doesn't want Dream to see?
Destruction, being Destruction, notices Dream being more quiet and subdued than usual when they visit the next weekend and immediately corners Hob in an unoccupied room far from where the others are.
"What the fuck have you done?"
"Wh-- I haven't done anything!"
Destruction can smell a lie from a mile away, and a second later, there is a flash of steel and something sharp is against Hob's neck. "I said. What. The fuck. Have you done."
Hob is a chef and is very good at handling knives. But he knows, without a doubt, that Destruction is more skilled than he is. He raises his hands in surrender, sighs, and says, "Fine. Get that thing away from me for a second and I'll show you."
Destruction narrows his eyes but allows it. He does not stow away his hunting knife. Hob eyes the knife for a second and concludes silently that Destruction is actually a hitman for hire. He starts to unbutton his shirt.
Destruction panicks for a second, thinking that Hob is gonna try to seduce him to get out of this (which, ew), but then he sees just exactly what Hob is hiding from Dream and he lets out a loud, booming laugh.
"Can I cover it up now?" Hob grouses, "Or are you gonna carve it off my chest? Do you have a filleting knife somewhere on your person too?"
Destruction still hasn't stopped laughing. "You're...you're a fucking idiot, Gadling," he says in between wheezes.
Hob rolls his eyes and buttons his shirt back up. "Tell me something I don't know."
Destruction does a complicated twirl with the knife in his hand, and then suddenly it's gone, sliding back to its sheath hidden under Destruction's sleeve. "Well, for starters, Dream is upset and thinks that you're cheating on him."
Hob's eyes bug out of its sockets. "I would never--"
"Well, yeah, I know that now, but maybe tell him that yourself. Don't wait until your anniversary to show him your surprise because odds are, he'll just think you're gonna leave him on the day itself."
Who the fuck-- "Did Dream's ex--?"
Destruction's face darkens. When he speaks, it's flat but furious. "The only reason I'm not gutting that pathetic excuse of a human being is because they're too important right now. But the moment their usefulness expires and I'm allowed off the leash..."
Jesus. Hob just unlocked Destruction's backstory but he's pretty sure he isn't meant to be hearing these details. "Well," Hob says as lightly as he could. "When you get your hands on them, punch them in the teeth for me, will you?"
Destruction regards him then, the monsters that lurked underneath their skins intent on protecting Dream looking at each other in the eye for the first time. He nods, satisfied. "You got it, Gadling."
"You gonna tell me what your line of work is?"
Destruction smiles like a shark. "Sorry. Classified."
As soon as they get home, Hob sits Dream on their bed and kneels on the floor in front of him. He holds Dream's shaking hands within his own and kisses them.
"You're leaving me," Dream says, and Hob absolutely hates how weak his voice is but how sure he sounds.
"No," Hob tells him firmly. "I...this was gonna be a surprise, but I was advised to show you as soon as possible. I'm sorry if I caused you to become upset. Believe me, that's not my intention at all." He starts unbuttoning his shirt. "I wanted to show you that I'm gonna stay with you forever."
"What could possibly...oh." Dream sees the tattoo of his name written in his own handwriting on Hob's chest, right above Hob's heart. His fingers reach out and caress the skin. Hob shivers. "This is what you made me write my name for."
"Yeah," Hob says. His skin felt especially sensitive with Dream's fingers gently ruffling his still growing chest hair. "You like it?"
"Hob..." Dream looks at him like...like for the first time, he's a hundred percent certain that Hob wouldn't leave him. That Hob will remain true to him. He has Dream's name written on him now, more permanent than a wedding ring. No one would be able to look at Hob now and say that he doesn't belong to Dream. "I love it. I love you."
"I love you too, my sweet Dream. Gonna be yours forever."
Dream doesn't have a single tattoo on his body either, but come morning, he's asking Hob to write down his own name on a piece of paper.
Hob does his best to write his name in his neatest possible penmanship, even if it still looks mediocre and messy compared to Dream's impeccable handwriting. Dream doesn't mind. He loves it. He gets Hob's name tattooed in the same place on his body, right over his heart.
The tattoo artist, the same one who did Hob's tattoo, coos at them and halves Dream's fee when they found out that Hob and Dream's anniversary is coming up and that this was their gift to each other.
Hob grins foolishly every time he sees Robert Gadling written on Dream's chest, and he loves kissing over that area as soon as it was healed. Dream also loves running his hands over Hob's chest, his fingers petting Hob's chest hair that grows above the tattoo of his name.
On the date of their anniversary, they went to the beach. It was cloudy, and there were only a few people there, but that was fine. What they wanted was to show off their matching tattoos and have other people know that they were taken, wholly and completely, by the person whose name is written above their heart.
