So, after half of our current trip is over, we finally get around to setting up a new blog. In the last six weeks we have seen too many things to backtrack
We are currently travelling along the Dordogne which was a major trading river east of Bordeaux
After a night of constant rain that started 5 minutes after returning from a local restaurant in Le Bugue, down next to the river amongst about 15 other motorhomes spread around a sports oval, we headed off at 8 am to get to some prehistoric caves and paintings about forty km away at Grotto du Rouffignac. Limited numbers of 85 per day, and accessed only by a small electric train, we were taken to 14,000 year old paintings 1 km along a cave that goes for 8km. Mammoths, bison and horses in amazing condition. Unfortunately no photos allowed.
Next we headed on to Chateau de Beynac perched on a clifftop above the Dordogne river. This was a huge climb, but worth every step. Built and rebuilt and extended, originally by the English as this was part of their realm in about the C12th, it has spectacular views over amazingly picturesque and fertile country (and another 8 chateaus)

And then, after a bit of a rest and another 10km drive we stopped at Sarlat, one of the first French towns to be protected by UNESCO because of its intact Renaissance and Medieval streets. Had dinner in town with yet another disgustingly good local red and then wandered the streets.

Thats it for today. I will try to keep this going

May 7 - Domme to Beynac - Arrogance Will be Punished
25 km - who knows how much CUS
As even the longer of two walking routes was only 17.6 km today, I decided that I could enjoy a nice breakfast and leave a bit later. It was lovely: coffee, juice, yogurt, tartine, pastries and a bowl of tiny flavourful strawberries that are an entirely different fruit from the California monsters we get at Safeway. I would happily pay $10-$15 a pound if I could get them at home. I enjoyed them on the Terrace while watching a flotilla of hot air balloons drift down the valley.
I also had the option today of simply walking down to the river and taking a canoe to Beynac. Canoeing is probably the most common tourist activity in the region as the river’s current is fairly strong (not much work) while the surface is flat and placid. I have yet to see the river without a spattering of watercraft and canoe rental outfits dot the shoreline.

I decided to walk and from there, the day went downhill. Often when trekking through the woods, you are not as aware of your surroundings as you should be. Today, at mid-morning, I had to stop on the trail to divest myself of my morning coffee and juice. While I had my hands full, I was startled by mama Chingale and a half a dozen little Chingale who rose up out of a depression 15-20 feet away. As the little ones fled, mama stood her ground, snorted and pawed the earth. To me, she appeared the size of a small horse, but more likely resembled a large dog. Needless to say, fearless Norm froze like a deer in the headlights. Fortunately, she must have sensed my complete lack of threat potential/cowardice and trotted off after the little ones.

After leaving the forest (looking over my shoulder), I stopped beneath the medieval (13th Century) Chateau de Castelnaud. Like others in the area, it changed hands repeatedly during the 100 years war and in the 19th Century was used as a stone quarry. I crossed over the Dordonge and continued across country to La Roque Gageac one of many villages embedded in the limestone cliffs and considered on of the prettiest villages in France.

After leaving here I got into trouble. Those who have been reading regularly (my family and two close friends) will remember that my first hotel lost my reservation and my walking package including luggage tag, map and guidebook. Nonetheless, I was confident that my experience, flawless sense of direction and brilliant made would allow me to compensate and work strictly from the notes. Such arrogance is just begging to be punished, and it was. Somewhere, I missed a turn (Kim will tell you how easy it is). I backtracked to try and recover but failed miserably. Next I tried to follow roads and highways using my phone gps which was better, but soon it sucked all the battery life out of my phone and I ended up adding 4-5 km to my day.
I arrived in Beynac, tired and discouraged only to find that there was no room at the inn. The staff had accepted my reservation from the booking agency but the owner cancelled it because he had problems in the past. Eventually they found a room and I paid for it myself and contacted my agent by phone who promised to reimburse me (just like two days ago in Sarlat). Let’s just say this hotel is not up to the standard of last night (or the Travel Lodge for that matter).

A second complication was that my walking notes were suppose to take me to the Chateau on the clifftop on my way into Beynac. My revised route put me at the bottom of the cliff so, after checking in, I trekked 2.5 km round trip and 150 m (500 ft) up to the Chateau. Perhaps not worth it at this stage, but if I didn’t do it I would always wonder what I had missed. If nothing else I would not have seen Richard I (the Lionhearted) bedchamber. As well as being King of England he was Duke of Normandy and Duke of Aquitaine (from his mom Eleanor. Actually he spent very little time in England, spoke little English and (like most of the Plantagenet kings) considered himself French first.
