~ PuffballsUnited, InnerSloth, The Henry Stickmin Collection
~ More of the AU where Terrence Suave partially lost his memory after being overthrown and now works with the government under a new identity and appearance. His new name is Laurent Silva, but he’s still called Terrence in the narration, and most of the time that’s how other characters address him.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“Hey.”
Terrence paused with his hand on the doorknob to the quarters he and Victoria shared.
“Did you forget Captain Galeforce wants you in his office?”
“No,” Terrence said, making his way slowly down the stairs.
“You can feed the cat later,” Rupert sighed. “Come on.”
Rupert set off at a brisk pace, and Terrence did his best to keep up.
When they arrived, Terrence spotted someone sitting in front of the captain’s desk.
“Thank you, Rupert,” Galeforce said. “Go get ready.”
“What’s going on?” Terrence asked, shutting the door.
Galeforce was quiet for a moment; then he locked his fingers together and gave Terrence a severe look.
“Did something happen?” Terrence prompted nervously.
“Laurent. You’ve heard of Henry Stickmin, correct?” Galeforce asked.
“The guy who stole the Tunisian Diamond?” Terrence exclaimed in surprise. “Of course. Why?”
Galeforce nodded at the other man, and Terrence stared at him.
“You’re to help him go over the airship blueprints you’ve been studying,” Galeforce said. “He’ll be infiltrating it today to find evidence to bring down the Toppat Clan.”
“Wh—?!”
Terrence couldn’t help but let out a stunned exclamation, but Galeforce glowered at him.
Terrence’s chest and face burned.
“I mean…y-yes, Captain.”
“You won’t have any problems?” Galeforce asked firmly, narrowing his eyes.
“No, sir…” Terrence responded, his heart thumping. “B-but…why now?”
Galeforce narrowed his eyes, then sighed.
“We have reason to believe the Toppats are working with Mayor Frederickson. The Toppats were employing his help to steal the Tunisian Diamond, but Mr. Stickmin got to it first. We know they have other plans and we’ve tied the Toppats to dozens of other crimes, but we need proof. That’s where you two come in.”
Galeforce pushed a set of blueprints towards Terrence and Henry, then nodded at the empty chair.
Terrence hobbled quickly forward and awkwardly took a seat, leaning his crutches against the desk.
“What would be the best way to go about obtaining evidence?” Galeforce asked.
Terrence stared dumbly at the airship diagram for a moment, only focusing halfway while the rest of his thoughts raced.
From the corner of his eye, he caught Henry glancing at him.
“W-well…” Terrence finally began, “this is the cockpit. Reginald will probably be there, and Right Hand Man. I guess you could try and capture one or both of them, but it’d be risky. Reginald would run, and Right’s no one to be messed with.”
“So…” Galeforce prompted.
Terrence swallowed hard and pointed at the hatch on the top of the airship.
“Sometimes w…”
Galeforce gave him a warning glare; Terrence hastily corrected himself.
“…this is used for entering and exiting when the airship’s on the ground, not when airborne.”
“And there’s a guard stationed there,” Galeforce said.
“Right…” Terrence agreed, tapping spots on the paper as he spoke. “Despite that, it’s the closest to the records room. Though…there’s the side entrance that leads to the security room, and that has all sorts of evidence. You could carry out a lot of data on a a USB drive.”
Terrence finally glanced at Henry to see he was staring curiously back.
“After that, you could go through electrical, at least if the power were rerouted, and be able to reach the cargo bay where you could be picked up by…Charles, I’m guessing?”
Galeforce nodded.
Henry raised a finger.
“Charles is our helicopter pilot,” Galeforce explained. “He’ll be flying you to the airship.”
Henry looked back at Terrence and raised an eyebrow.
“I’m staying here,” Terrence said. “As you can see, I wouldn’t be much help in person.”
Henry brought his hands up, making arches before cupping them.
Terrence shook his head.
“I…I’m sorry.”
Henry huffed.
“He’s asking how,” Galeforce said.
“My leg?” Terrence asked, and Henry nodded. “Fell down a cliff during a patrol.”
Henry looked quickly away.
“Anyway,” Terrence sighed. “That’s one of the best routes I’d suggest.”
“Would there be anything useful in the cargo bay?” Galeforce questioned, a hand on his chin.
“Not unless you want weapons or items that are going to be organized in the Vault,” Terrence said with a shrug. “They’d be too big for one person to take, and might not prove much for what you want.”
“And if Henry did manage to capture Reginald?”
“Don’t trust anything Reginald says,” Terrence muttered. “He’d try and get out of it however he could.”
“But…?” Galeforce pressed.
“But if you did capture him,” Terrence said, “he’d talk.”
He fell silent, clenching his fists, then took a deep breath.
“You wouldn’t have to threaten him or…or…anything else,” Terrence said quietly. “But again, you’d have to go through Right.”
“Are you sure the security room is the best option?” Galeforce asked firmly.
“If you want Henry to get in and out as quickly as possible,” Terrence said.
“Alright,” Galeforce said with a nod. “That will be all for now. We’re going to discuss the plans further to iron everything out, so we’ll likely need you again soon. Go back to your quarters for now.”
Terrence nodded, then stiffly got to his feet.
Henry tapped his shoulder, then held out his right hand.
Terrence stared at him for a moment, then uneasily extended his own right hand and clasped Henry’s.
A painful shock jolted through Terrence, and suddenly he felt paralyzed, as if he were trapped in stone.
He then heard a crawling whisper at the back of his mind.
Terrence Suave…one of the worst leaders the Toppat Clan has ever had…
Terrence shut his eyes tightly.
He would launch raids that made no sense, just for the thrill…
“Hey, get moving!”
Terrence stared down at Rupert in confusion.
“I said Captain Galeforce wants you in his office now, so move it!”
“Wh…I was…I was just there,” Terrence stammered.
“Nice try,” Rupert said, raising an eyebrow. “Come on.”
Terrence shook his head, then slowly made his way down the stairs and followed after Rupert.
The Everyman, The Explorer, The Rebel with a cause. Any of these sound familiar? They are just a few of the character archetypes developed by Swiss psychiatrist Carl Jung in the 20th century. After studying the myths, legends, and fables of cultures around the world the world, he noticed similarities among the character’s patterns of behavior. He called them archetypes which means “original pattern” and they have been used in countless stories throughout film & television alike. Here are a few you should know…
The Everyman; Ian Lightfoot “Onward”
“I Am Just Like You, I Promise!”
There’s nothing unique about the Everyman… except they’re usually destined to be the savior of the world. They are the average joe, the good guy, the workaholic, etc. You’ve seen them enough to know them well. You may even feel like them yourself. But do not discount the Everyman. While they may live a mundane lifestyle, their core desire is to belong. That desire is usually what drives them to live so uneventfully. Because uneventful people don’t raise suspicions. They can easily fit into a group. And that’s all the Everyman wants. However, this can come with a price. The Everyman Archetype is often prone to denying their own points of view/perspective in the attempt to seem compatible with the majority. They fear being thought of as different or weird.
Ian Lightfoot desperately wants to be an Everyman when he truly is a Magician. Born with untapped magical powers, he could be a famed wizard. But he would rather just be able to go to school and ask a group of kids to come to his birthday party. He’s not up for adventure in the least until going on one might be the only way to fulfill his lifelong wish of spending a day with his late father. That’s the thing that truly makes the Everyman shine. Pressing their backs against a wall and making it clear that only by stepping outside of their norm can they ever hope to get it back.
The Explorer; Mr. Carl Frederickson “Up!”
“Adventure is Out There!”
The Explorer has one thing on their mind; adventure! They believe that the world should and must be explored. Think of Tommy from the Rugrats or Dora from Dora the Explorer. Nothing drives them more than the thought of going someplace and doing something new! Pixar’s loveable senior citizen character Carl Frederickson is no different. His primary goal throughout the movie is to get his home to Paradise Falls following in the footsteps of his favorite explorer Charles Muntz.
The Explorer is a highly mobile character. They have no ambition to sit still and that’s because their core goal is to seek out new things, experiences, and people. However, this can often be their downfall and result in them getting into many dangers along their way. Carl battles a thunderstorm, talking dogs, and a world that entirely new to him just for the sake of adventure and to fulfill a promise he has made to his wife. What a guy!
The Rebel; Izzy Richardson “Little Fires Everywhere”
“Give Me Liberty or Give Me Death!”
If you haven’t seen this Hulu original limited series based on the Celeste Ng novel by the same name, YOU NEED TO! Not just because of its expert use of several of Jung’s archetypes (the Ruler (Elena), The Rebel (Izzy), The Creator (Mia), The Caregiver (Linda), but it’s just an incredible mini-series whose plot and characters develop beautifully.
Izzy Richardson, admittedly one of my favorite characters, is the youngest of the Richardson’s and the black sheep of the family. In typical Rebel fashion, Izzy serves the story in one primary way, she shakes things up. That is the key characteristic of the Rebel. They are dissatisfied with the current state of their world and do most everything in their power to change it; or at least make it as unbearable as possible.
When considering this archetype, it is important to note that they don’t have to be themselves a typical rebel, holding up banners and painting black stripes on their faces. Neither do they have to be fighting against an oppressive government like Katniss Everdeen (Hunger Games) or Fred Hampton (Judas & The Black Messiah). They could be rebelling against a teacher, principal, employer, or in Izzy’s case her mother, who takes on the archetype of The Ruler (more on this later). Sometimes your character may seem to fall into the Rebel archetype (Katniss) other times they seem to be born this way (Izzy/Fred). What’s most important is that this character is driven by the need to liberate or be liberated. They will fear or fight against any form of tyranny, oppression, or unfair treatment. And sometimes they win (Katniss). And other times… not so much. In Izzy’s case her rebellious nature leads her to a bitter end which I will not spoil!
The Creator/The Inventor; Willy Wonka
“There is no world I know to compare with your imagination.”
You may think that the creator has their head in the clouds… but, quite the opposite. They may be one of the most in tune with society. It is not that the Creator is out of touch with reality, they just are not married to it. They dream big and long to see those dreams become a reality. They may be jaded or joyful. Introverted or extroverted. Charismatic or socially awkward. So long as they are actively pursuing the actualization of some innovative idea, invention, or creation for others or themselves.
Let’s consider Willy Wonka. A man who has completely isolated himself from society and created a world in which he could live in peace and in harmony. You might think that the movie should be over. There’s nothing left for the Creator to do, he’s created it. Right? Well, creation is only half of what the Creator longs. They are also driven by longevity. The idea that something they make can and will outlive them. Which is the entire reason Wonka has invited the children to the factory. It was his hope that he would find in one of these lucky winners the successor that would continue on the legacy he began.
The Caregiver; Evelyn Couch “Fried Green Tomatoes”
“Here, let me fix you.”
We all know someone who falls into the caregiver archetype. Someone that we are constantly going to for love, comfort, and well… care. They seem to be driven by the act of caring for others and you rarely see them doing much for themselves? I immediately think of Evelyn Couch from Fried Green Tomatoes. Obviously I can’t say this with any true confidence, but she may be one of the only Caregiver archetypes that are also the protagonist. Usually, a caregiver will be a friend or ally of the protagonist as their addition to the story is to aide them as they pursue their own agenda. It would make for a pretty boring story if all we ever saw was the protagonist helping others reach their goals and never actively pursuing their own. Right?
That may be what makes Evelyn Couch such an interesting character to watch. She goes from being this doting housewife to taking some true command of herself and her environments. She never stops being a caregiver. We know this by the actions she takes near the end of the film (which I won’t spoil). What’s most essential for the Caregiver archetype is their almost primal instinct to nurture and care for other people. But much like Evelyn Couch, to their own detriment. They can be too extending, having little or no boundaries when it comes to those they love. They are often portrayed as nurses, teachers, mothers, elders, house spouses, as these are people, regardless of culture, who are almost always considered caring.
These are just a few of the archetypes noticed by Carl Jung. Hundreds more have been uncovered and hundreds more will. As foreign and otherwise excluded cultures become visible in film, television, and literature, we find humanity within them more and more. We see how we’re alike, how we’re different, and how the stories that have been told in all our cultures keep us connected and entertained.
However, I would be remiss if I did not warn against the dangers of having archetypes fall into the mundane and often offensive category of tropes & stereotypes. These are 2D figures within your story which 1.) don’t seem to have been well-drawn & 2.) employ counterproductive & oversimplified ideas of people and their cultures for the sake of entertainment. DON’T DO THIS! Remember archetypes give pattern and purpose to your character while helping us understand subconsciously who they are and how they move the story along.
So, what are some of your favorite archetypes?
With what happened with the previous events of the movie Carl Frederickson must be considered a local celebrity within his new neighborhood. I mean in the news before he was considered a local menace who had the guts to fly his tiny house out of the city with thousands of balloons filled with tanks of helium.
When he came back he was driving this massive blimp with dogs wearing translation collars. Russel clearly vouched for him and made it clear he stowed away by accident. They probably didn’t tell everyone the whole story. They wouldn’t believe Charles Muntz was still alive at that point and Carl, Dug and Russel chose to keep their mouths shut about Kevin the rare bird.
Just the Two of Us (5)
HAHN AU
The hair salon Lainey worked at was visited by women from all different walks of life. It wasn't out of the ordinary to see prominent women there or women from her neighborhood. No matter where they were from all the stylists treated them with the same respect and made them feel relaxed and welcomed.
When she heard her boss call her name, Lainey looked up from the frontal she was installing with a smile on her face.
"Yes, Blair?"
Blair approached her smiling wider than usual. "I'm gonna finish this for you, there's someone in my office to see you."
Lainey didn't have time to ask any questions before Blair pushed her out of the way and shooed her to the office. Getting to the office, Lainey carefully pushed the door open and went in. Her heart was in her throat when she saw the woman looking back at her.
Tumblr media
"Alaina, right? You look so much more beautiful in person, dear."
Lainey played with her hands nervously. "I...thank you, First Lady. Everybody calls me Lainey though."
"I'll call you Lainey if you agree to call me Victoria," she smiled patting the chair beside her, "Come sit. I want to discuss something with you."
Quickly, Lainey sat not wanting to disrespect or offend her.
"Alright so, my sister is having an event in a couple days and we need someone for hair and makeup."
"I can recommend some stlyists for you if you'd like "
"Unless you're recommending yourself that's not necessary. I want you to do it. I've seen your work and I was blown away. Please say that you'll do it."
Lainey nodded excitedly. "Oh yes ma'am, I would love to."
Victoria grabbed her hands and smiled. "Great! I already have your number, Blair gave it to me, so expect a call or text from me. You'll be doing me, my sister, my daughter and her son's girlfriend's hair and make up. Is that okay?"
"Yes ma'am," she nodded, "Just send me some ideas of what you all want and I'll make it happen for you."
"Then its settled," Victoria sighed getting up, "Your hard work won't go unnoticed either, you'll be paid your worth. You my dear are worth a lot."
Lainey thanked her as she was leaving the office. She sat there for a moment trying to take everything in. Never did she think she would be approached by the first lady to do hair and makeup.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Knowing her brother had spent all day packing up the rest of their house, Lainey got a ride home from a co-worker. She rushed inside and almost knocked her brother over.
"Whoa, whoa, road runner. You gon take me out," Benny laughed setting the box he was holding down.
"Guess what, B!"
"You finally realized you got chicken legs?" He joked earning a hit to his chest
"No! The First Lady came into the salon today and she asked me to do hair and makeup for her sister's event! She said that she admired my work, B!"
Benny's face lit up at his sister's excitement, he pulled her into a hug and lifted her up off the ground. He knew his sister's talent was major and it would take her places. He sat her down after a few minutes.
"When? What's the details?"
"In two days. She said she's gonna call or text me and give me more information. And I'm getting paid my worth, she said. Finally!"
"I'm so happy for you, baby sis. You deserve this plus so much more."
Lainey hugged him tight again. "Thank you, B. I'm gonna use the money to pay up some of the mortgage on the house."
"No, you not. You know we already got that all the way covered." He said quickly and firmly. "You gon take that money and work on opening your shop and whatever more you need, I'll put down. I'm sure if Marcie found that house for us she can find a shop for you."
"Really, B?" Lainey said excitedly.
"Yeah, really. Gone in there and tell Mama. Ima run these boxes over to the new house."
Hanna was extremely proud and happy. Seeing her kids thriving and so many things going in their favor had her forgetting about her sickness. She hugged her daughter tightly, praying over her.
"I'm proud of you, little girl. You and your brother have grown so much."
"Thank you, Mama. After you beat this, me and Benny are gonna take you to the place you've always dreamed of going."
Hanna smiled, "And where is that?"
"Aruba, Mama. You used to tell us about it when we was little. You said you were gonna go and bring us back sand," she laughed. "Remember?"
"Of course, I do. Yall got so offended when I said that," she laughed, "Tellin me I couldn't go nowhere without yall."
"And can't," Lainey agreed kissing her cheek, "I'm gonna run next door to Ms. Tilda's house. She cooked dinner for us to celebrate the move, ima help her bring it over."
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Benny dropped his sister off at the Harrington residence. He helped her get her rolling bag out and walked her to the porch. As always, he let her know to call if she needed anything. He didn't want to leave her but he didn't have a choice, he was moving the rest of their stuff into their new house while she was gone.
One of the Harrington's housekeepers let her in then left her in the foyer. She stood idly waiting for someone to help her, after a few minutes she realized that no one was coming. She heard voices and decided to follow them leaving her bag by the front door.
The voices led her to an office. She saw four men standing with drinks and talking. Taking a chance she knocked on the door frame and cleared her throat making all four men turn to look at her. She recognized them immediately--the president, David Harrington, Jim Cryer and Governor Charles Frederickson.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
"I'm sorry to interrupt but I'm here for hair and makeup and I have no idea where I'm supposed to be."
Hunter whistled, "I'd say you came to the right place, sweetheart."
"No," Lainey shook her head, "I don't think I did, President. I'm looking for your wife."
David smiled and stepped forward.
"They are upstairs. Follow me and I'll take you there, Miss."
"Just call me Lainey, the miss isn't necessary." She assured him.
Charles smiled, he knew she was slightly intimidated when she first walked in but she was tough she didn't show it.
"Miss is just a sign of respect, I don't mean to offend, Lainey."
Lainey nodded, "Miss is manners, calling me by my name is respect, Mr. Harrington."
David gave an amused smiled and nodded, "Well okay then, Lainey. Would you allow me to show you where you should be?"
"Please," Lainey waved politely at the other men, "Enjoy your drinks."
David led her upstairs to the women, leaving his friends to.talk amongst themselves. Between Jim and Hunter they discussed Lainey in an unflattering manner while Charles stayed quiet thinking about how he could see her again.
"You're here! Did you get lost?" Victoria asked hugging Lainey.
"No, um the housekeeper let me in and just left me there. I had to ask for help."
"You need new maids, Ronnie. Come this way, I'll show you where to set up."
Lainey followed closely behind the First Lady with her bag to what looked like a vanity room. She got set up then started to work.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
"Hey, you're Lainey, right?"
Lainey turned and smiled, "Yeah, that's me. You must be Melissa."
Melissa nodded closing the door to the room before walking over to the station Lainey had set up. "Yeah. Verinica wants my hair straight mostly."
Lainey nodded getting her flat iron ready. "What do you want? I think loose curls would look better on you."
"I do too but thats what she wants."
Lainey nodded not wanting to overstep her boundaries. She'd already done Veronica's hair and didn't get a good vibe. The twonof them talked and laughed while she did Melissa's hair and make up.
"Damn, girl! You look good! Jeffery is gonna love you!" Lainey hyped fixing a few pieces of hair. "Yeees! I did that!"
"You did a bomb ass job," Melissa complemented looking in the mirror, "But Jeffery won't notice and I don't care. I look good for me."
Deciding not to get into their business, Lainey started to clean up her area and put her things away. Halfway through, Lainey sent Benny a text letting him know he could come get her and she noticed Melissa was still standing there.
"Oh I'm sorry. Did you need something?"
Melissa nodded a small smile on her face, "Yeah, your number."
"Um, huh?"
"No, not like that," Melissa laughed, "You're pretty cool and I don't really have anyone outside of this family to talk to."
"Oh, oh," Lainey laughed, "Let me see your phone."
Melissa handed her the phone and wagched Lainey put her number in. When she get her phone back she sent her a quick text.
"And now you have my number. I gotta go get dressed but expect me to text you tonight."
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Victoria thanked her profusely when she went to say her goodbyes. She assured her that by the time she got home, the payment would be in her account and that she would be in contact to do it again. Even though Victoria told her she could wait in the living room, Lainey decided to wait out on the front porch for Benny.
The door opened behind her and she slid over thinking someone wanted to get by.
"You're not in my way."
Lainey turned just as Charles stepped beside her. She didn't k ow what to say so she just nodded.
"You're very talented. The ladies look nice," he complimented.
"Thank you, Governor."
"Charles," he corrected, "Call me Charles, Lainey."
She nodded looking out at the large driveway. "Okay, Charles. You need something from me?"
Charles laughed loudly making her jump a little.
"I'm sorry, i just definitely expected you to be less forward. You seem sweet."
"I am sweet, Charles. I just dont have much patience and I'm not a pushover."
Charles nodded, "Noted. Well since you're impatient let me ask, are you seeing anybody?"
Lainey shook her head checking her text from her brother. He was turning in.
"In that case, would it be okay if changed that?"
Seeing he brother pull up, Lainey looked at Charles and shrugged her shoulders staring at him. She heard Benny's door open and his footsteps getting closer.
"Lemme get that," Benny said grabbing her bag ig oring the man, "You ready?" Lainey nodded looking away from Charles. "Aight, come get in the car."
Lainey smiled and started to walk off the porch only for Charles to grab her hand gently that didn't go unnoticed by her big brother.
"Ayo, my man," he spat with a huff, "Dont touch my sister."
"I didn't mean any harm," he said cooly. "Her and I were just talking. I was waiting on an answer. Well, Lainey?"
Lainey thought for a moment then nodded. "That would be okay. But I'm. Not giving you my number."
Charles smiled wide, "I'll find it. Don't worry."
Benny pulled his sister gently along with him, glaring at Charles giving a flash of his fronts. He got a good enough vibe from the guy but being at the Harrington house was a little iffy for him. He helped his sister in the suv, put her bag in the back then got in and drove off.
"B," Lainey called out fifteen minutes down the road.
"Yeah?"
"You think he likes me or he wants to sleep with me?"
Benny glanced over at her and sighed. "I think he likes you. But that don't mean you let your guard down, aight?"
"Alright, B. I won't."
My Ascent into MADness
          I’ve seen a lot of eulogies to MAD from contributors and fans alike the past week since the news broke that they wouldn’t be printing new material going forward. Yes, it is a loss for me as a MAD contributor but to be honest, I have been processing this loss and the end of MAD for a little while now. As Tom Richmond said so dead on, this was not something we didn’t see coming.
           I wrote some tweets as a tribute to MAD the day after the announcement went public but I feel I owe it more. (I really am a millennial - I thought a tweet or two was enough!) MAD was a big part of my life. It changed my life. It deserves more than Twitter. We all do!
           I was a writer and artist (occasionally) for MAD since I interned at the age of 19 but not many people know how I encountered MAD for the first time. I was born with a pencil in my hand as my mom says which makes me question what she was eating and drinking during pregnancy. I was always drawing and dreamed of being a comic strip artist after my dream of being a basketball star went by the waist side when everyone got taller and left me well by their waist side! During high school, my family took a trip to California and being big fans of Peanuts (my mom and I), we visited the Charles Schulz Museum in Santa Rosa. It was an amazing experience. We went around the whole museum while my dad and brother tailed off to let my mom and I experience it more in-depth at our leisure. When I met up with my dad later, he said “I was sitting in on this artist talk and the guy is pretty good. Maybe you’d be interested.” We went in and Tom Richmond was doing a talk about caricatures. They were amazing. Funny, exaggerated and completely dead on. You knew who it was right away! The perfect caricature.
           As the talk ended, Tom showed the opening spread artwork he just finished for MAD Magazine for the movie, Spiderman 2. Wow. Caricatures, amazing line, color and backgrounds together. Oh and stupidity! Spiderman’s pants were coming down so his underwear was showing, Doc Ock had big bandages on his tentacles and there was a paper that said “Man bites Dog, Dog sues.” The best was a spider web coming from the middle of Spiderman’s legs which I remember Tom saying, “Yeah, I’m surprised I got away with that one.” I left amazed but also thinking I can’t draw like that. Uh-oh.
           The museum announced that they would be doing a caricature workshop with Tom in about five minutes upstairs for free. We all went with a little encouragement from my parents. Tom started by asking for a volunteer that he could do a caricature demonstration of. My parents were very insistent that I do it, but being a teenager at the time (who looked quite younger than his actual age, short and scrawny!), I didn’t want to. I was picked and had to go up in front of everyone for an artist to pick apart my face and draw me. Yay! I was a good sport and a very jokey guy so I can take a joke just like I dished them out. He drew me on chart paper with big muscles and a mom tattoo because hell, my mom was the whole reason he was drawing me! I left the workshop with a caricature in my hand and MAD Magazine in my head. I need to get the magazine that had this Spiderman art in it. Many years later after hanging and talking to Tom on multiple MAD occasions as contributors, I told him this story at a party after a beer or two. He was a bit surprised to say the least.
           We went to a mall shortly afterwards and I was searching for the MAD art in the newsstands but it wasn’t out yet. I settled for the latest issue and was amazed by the diverse amazing artwork in the magazine. Since I met Richmond, I was fascinated with his work and it really stood out but there were other guys that were cool too like Mort Drucker, Hermann Mejia, Tom Bunk and John Caldwell (my all-time favorite since he was much goofier looking and simplified with his artwork just like I liked to draw!) Plus, he had this squiggle in his line which was intriguing. How? Why?
           I became obsessed with MAD for the art. I didn’t read it as much as I should have early on but I was just obsessed with the artwork as a budding cartoonist. The words were secondary to me. It was an art magazine. I drew everything in high school with chicken fat - gags on top of gags. My MAD subscription and obsession continued when I entered college. I went on the MAD website and saw they had internships in the New York offices for art and editorial. I was in no way a graphic design person. I hated it. Type and layout was boring. I wanted to be a cartoonist! I applied for both art and editorial. I wrote and mocked up my own outtakes from different TV shows such as The Office, Muppets etc. which was a recurring feature in the magazine at the time. It was something fun to do on a rainy Saturday night. I submitted and thought nothing of it. I wasn’t going to get it. Another summer doing art and taking summer classes. Yay.
            I checked my email on a slow Monday morning and to my astonishment, there was an email from Amy V. at MAD offering me an editorial internship. I was stunned. I told my family and they were ecstatic for me and soon I was starting my first day as a MAD intern. It was insane. The only magazine, I liked and I was going to work there. I got there and we had a morning staff meeting first thing. The whole staff (which wasn’t big at all!) and the four interns (two editorial and two art). I was nervous but was eased when the staff was grilling us about the magazine and I was the only one answering everything. I remember art leaving after giving their report on the status of their pieces and what they needed etc. John Ficarra, the editor (and best Benjamin Franklin impersonator I’ve ever met) took a piece of paper and wrote down what Michael and I would be doing. I got a big speech from my family about interns and how I shouldn’t expect much, I’m going to get coffee and do meaningless jobs that others didn’t want to do etc. John said “Okay, you’ll be writing fundalini pieces in house such as “The Godfrey Report”, “Celebrity Cause of Death Betting Odds” - give us a list of celebs to approve before you start and Fundalini asks “What If…?” etc.” He also said, we will have brainstorming writing sessions where you will work with us etc. I don’t think I blinked for the two minutes he was talking. Then he said, Dave will show you your office and get you guys set up. We had an office. We had our own desks. We had our own computers, phones. What?! Where was the coffee I needed to get them?
            We went right to writing, Michael and I. We came up with a bunch of celebrities etc. and got to know each other. I was always an art person and a little funny in classrooms and parties but never would I think of myself as a writer. We got a bunch of issues from the storage closet and focused in on the material we had to write specifically. I was seeing the magazine in a completely different light. It was incredibly smart and funny. Why wasn’t I reading this cover to cover all the time? We started writing together and putting out stupid jokes to try to make each other laugh. Sometimes successfully and most of the time, not. The soul crushing silence became the most dreaded thing in my life. The joke didn’t land and you just embarrassed yourself. That writing session was broken up by a call to come to the editor’s office because Al Jaffee was there dropping off the new Fold In. What?! This day is getting more surreal. That was cool is an understatement. Eventually, throughout the days at MAD, Michael and I wrote by ourselves and didn’t really collaborate on any pieces mostly because we had different comedy sensibilities and it was easier to write by ourselves. I started writing all day long and printing out my pieces to read and revise on my commute home.
            I got to sit in on fold in meetings, department writing sessions, general pitch meetings from writer submissions and what direction they wanted to go with content. I quickly figured out that I wasn’t as quick and funny as everyone else thought I was. These guys have been doing it for decades. Damn were they good! My first department writing meeting, they had an article about Fast Food and they needed a fake department name. I didn’t even get to process what the article was and the editor says “When Grease Meets West?” to which he is interrupted by Charlie singing “All We Are Sayyyyinnnnggg…Is Give Grease a Chance.” I was dumbfounded, out of my element and intimidated. I need to get better and quick.
            As the six-week internship went on, I wrote so many pitches and submissions. I wrote three or four pages of Godfrey Reports (maybe nine got in), multiple Celebrity Cause of Death Betting Odds (three or so that got printed), so so many what ifs, that were off the mark. I loved it there! The people were funny, they were welcoming and better yet, they were kind and nurturing. They told you what worked and didn’t work. They didn’t care who had the best idea or the funniest line in the room, they liked that it was the best and funniest! It was comedy boot camp and you wanted to work there forever.
             We helped write fundalini pieces, department titles, articles in house, even an article introduction and so much more. I was like a staff member. I would get there early and leave later than I needed to. I met legends and heroes of mine when they would visit the office including Al Jaffee, John Caldwell, Teresa Burns Parkhurst, ironically, Tom Richmond and Hermann Mejiia among others. We got to go through original art for auction (where I found three Don Martins which they had to pry from my hands before I drooled on them), got to admire and examine Mort Drucker original pages that he just fed ex’ed in for a new parody with the staff, see the construction of a cover putting Obama and Alfred together (like 20 or 30 different versions) and the same for the Knockout Obama, Hillary piece both by Mark Frederickson. I felt like a staff member and left being assigned an editor to submit to and now you are a contributing writer, if you want to be. Submit anything you want. Now I’m a writer. They didn’t know who I was six weeks before. I’m just a college kid. I’m a contributor now? That was the best thing about MAD, they didn’t care what else you did for other people, they wondered what could you do for us. Don’t show me work you did for other people, show me a piece you wrote specifically for us. They looked at potential and built up talent to a new level.
            I wrote and wrote and there was a lot of near sales but a lot of not quites. I sold to MAD Kids before Christmas. That was a cool Christmas gift. In January, the magazine lays off three staff members and goes quarterly. There’s a famous Stephan Pastis line that I always remember and works best here “I finally get to play for the Lakers and the stadium is collapsing underneath us.” I came back the next summer and interned in the art department. Now, I’m getting to know people I knew but didn’t work with closely at all. Same old MAD but completely different. Instead of being with the editorial guys, I was with the art guys, Ryan, Sam and Doug. All smart, funny and amazing guys themselves. I came right into a deadline for the magazine and was put to Photoshopping different things. I was then tasked with restoring fold ins for a upcoming fold in collection. The previous intern did about ten or so which meant we were a long way away from completion. Over the next six weeks, I restored over 450 or so fold ins for the book, got to have lunch with and meet more artists and writers including Harry North, Jason Chatfield, Shannon Wheeler etc. and go through more original artwork to send back to the artists. Any cartoonists dream. I think Adam Cooke and Michael Slaubaugh visited that summer too! During this time, I wrote a piece on the weekend and submitted it to Dave Croatto, my editor, to which they eventually bought! Now I was actually a contributor to MAD! Not in house pieces but as a writer.
            After leaving MAD as an art intern, I looked for other places to intern/write for/work for. I knew MAD wasn’t going to pay the bills! I interviewed at The Onion where they told me I would hate working there after working at MAD because they didn’t care if it was the funniest idea or line in the room, if an intern said it they would ignore it. Nothing was like MAD and would be like it. I became very loyal to MAD. I only wrote for them. I didn’t consider myself a comedian, I was just a writer for MAD and MAD only. I temped after college in the editorial department for a month (literally, the day after my last final ever and took a day off for graduation!) We started the blog, established daily posting and internet presence through the current events that was happening. I started submitting more and selling on a more consistent basis. I valued their opinions and their direction. Nothing made me happier than seeing a MAD guy on the floor of a convention or visiting the office once or twice a year. They changed my career and the way I looked at things by just giving a 19-year-old kid a chance and some criticism and encouragement. They let me submit cartoons and I started to sell those too!
           I continued to write for the magazine and even got a page in their new book, Inside MAD, to write about MAD as a contributor. I did other freelance art jobs and eventually went back to graduate school to become an art teacher. Even throughout the four years I’ve been teaching, I continued to contribute and write consistently for the magazine. There are too many stories and memories to recount. (Believe me, this could be much longer!) When MAD announced they were moving to California, I went into mourning. My buddies were leaving. There were talks for years about this happening and they resisted as much as they could. I didn’t know what was going to be next for them and the magazine. I wanted to continue writing because it was my outlet and a nice hobby for me to destress from life and my full time gig of teaching cartooning. It wasn’t a job for me, it was fun!
           The new year came and it meant starting over with a new staff. It was hard. I tried but my heart wasn’t in it as much as when the New York staff was there. I wrote pieces and sold pieces (many that didn’t get printed because of the shortened run) but contributed none the less. As my job got more intense, I wrote less and less and without the same relationship, I had in the past my motivation folded a little bit before MAD did. My mourning period has lasted for a year and a half so the end of MAD wasn’t such a surprise or as much of a loss as it would have been otherwise for me. It still is a loss, don’t get me wrong but less so. This isn’t any slight to the West Coast MAD staff at all. It was me, not them. MAD became a fun hobby for me. Not my sole income and my way of life. I did it because I had the ideas and I enjoyed the people and the work. Plenty of people make fun of politicians, celebrities and the stupidity of the life but I occasionally got paid for it.
            I’ve been asked if I will try to get into other publications. I don’t know. Maybe. You might just see more MAD like pieces in my own webcomics and cartoons. The influence will be there forever and I hope people can clearly see that through the bad puns, the political stupidity and the irony.
            MAD is the cartooning and comedy bible. I loved the art as a cartoonist and grew to love the writing and minds behind everything as a contributing writer. My art and views are completely changed by my experiences working and being a MAD idiot. Everything I do is so idea based now because of MAD and being a MAD writer. They weren’t afraid of new blood or printing work from an unknown artist or writer. They gave chances and crafted things that were truly unique. I thank them for changing my life and letting me be a part of theirs and their legacy for the past decade. All of the amazing people and contributors I have met because of it is amazing. I will miss the occasions we would meet, share a joke or even lament about things. My life would be something very different if I didn’t go to a museum in Santa Rosa, if I didn’t submit an internship application and if I didn’t pick up a MAD Magazine on vacation. I would be called an idiot in different, not so surprising and endearing contexts and I wouldn’t have an Alfred sized hole in me today. I’m proud to sound off like I have to other MAD NY staffers and contributors in our coded communications.
Forever MAD
The End!! Major Spoilers Ahead!! ;)
This last section of the book really was a whirlwind with so much happening in a completely unexpected way. I was especially caught off guard by Chief’s decision to kill his former hero, McMurphy, though I will discuss that passage a bit later on in this post because I think it warrants further examination. Kesey uses the last section of the book to essentially make a martyr out of McMurphy; his act of self-sacrifice is the last piece of the puzzle needed to free the patients in the ward from the tyranny of Nurse Ratched. Despite the fact that McMurphy had a largely positive impact on the patients in the ward, the reader is also forced to confront the casualties that occurred along the way in the form of Billy Bibbit and Charles Cheswick, both of which undermine the virtue of what McMurphy was trying to do.
McMurphy’s attack on Nurse Ratched was essentially a death sentence but his sacrifice proves to be the final act that frees the patients. After McMurphy is subdued, Chief narrates “I hung around another couple of weeks...Everything was changing. Sefelt and Frederickson signed out together Against Medical Advice, and two days later another three Acutes left, and six more transferred to another ward” (319). From his first interaction with the patients in the ward, McMurphy had worked to get them to the point where they could comfortably return to society. Unlike the Nurse, he recognized that the Acutes were not truly crazy, and sheltering them from the outside world had only exacerbated the issues that they actually had. McMurphy’s ability to lend courage to those around him to stand up to the Nurse also extends beyond the Acutes in the ward; it seems as though he also had a profound impact on the doctor as well. At the start of the novel, the doctor cowers in the presence of Nurse Ratched but by the end, when the “doctor was informed that his resignation would be accepted...he informed them that they would have to go the whole way and can him if they wanted him out” (319). Even though the nurse essentially sucks the life out of McMurphy with the lobotomy she had performed on him, the damage has done.
I remember being shocked by Chief’s decision in the movie to kill McMurphy but having read the book, I can understand his rationale at least a little bit better. There was none of what made McMurphy himself after the operation had been completed and his mission of freeing the patients had been completed. Because of this, Chief was maybe doing McMurphy a favor by ending what would have been a completely pointless life as a vegetable in the ward. That kind of life is certainly not what McMurphy would have wanted. I think that Kesey was trying to point the reader towards a couple of different greater significances in this last section but one of them is the idea that even our most revered heroes are still deeply flawed human beings. The nurse sums up many of these flaws when she says “First Charles Cheswick and now William Bibbit!...gambling with human lives--as if you thought yourself to be a God!”(318). McMurphy was directly responsible for the deaths of two innocent men, leaving the reader to contend with the question: was McMurphy a hero?
Plot summary-
Carl frederickson is a little boy who is a dreamer and grows old with his wife Ellie who ensures an essence of adventure in him.They both want to live at paradise falls in south America as they are fascinated boy Charles Muntz a famous explorer. After the death of Ellie Carl becomes insular and does not want to move from his house. Ultimately it takes a call to  action of him hitting a worker from the construction company with the consequences of him being placed in a retirement home as a result and his house being demolished for him to leave the area He begins to fly to paradise falls were he hears a knock at the door thousands of feet in the air, this introduces him to Russel a wilderness explorer who had knocked at Carls door previously. Carl tries to take Russel home but a storm ensues.
The house is knocked around in the turbulence but Carl manages to tie most of his items down before falling asleep. He's woken the next morning by Russell, who tells him that they're over South America. Carl releases some balloons to descend but they hit ground early and are knocked out of the house. As they reach the other end of the falls they decide to walk the rest of the way due to the balloons deflating.
Meanwhile, a chase is progressing in the jungle. Russell stops to go to the bathroom and happens upon a giant bird which he lures closer with a chocolate bar. He introduces the colourful creature to Carl and gives it the name Kevin. Kevin follows them as they continue their journey but runs off when they approach the silhouette of a man who calls out to them. However, they see that the man is nothing more than a trick of the eye caused by overlapping stones. They are then approached by a golden retriever with a red light on his collar. Russell tells him to sit and speak and is surprised when the dog answers, using the device on his collar. He tells them his name is Dug and that he is a tracker looking for a bird, at which point Kevin tackles him. They continue on to paradise falls and find none other than Charles Muntz who has been looking for Kevin for many years as he tries to repair his reputation.
Muntz invites them into The Spirit of Adventure as guests, but his behavior soon turns hostile when he finds out that Russell has adopted a new pet bird. Muntz reveals a table of head mannequins wearing various headgear and grimly knocks each one off with his cane as he describes the stories their wearers told him; claiming that each one was actually after his bird. Carl and Russell run away from the zeppelin just as Muntz discovers the bird calling out from the roof of Carl's home. Riding on Kevin's back and assisted by Dug, who calls Carl his new master, they barely escape capture by Muntz's dogs, though Kevin is injured in the process. Carl agrees to help Kevin get back to her babies safely but, just before Kevin can re-enter her labyrinth home, a net flies out and captures her. Muntz and his dogs have arrived in the zeppelin, led to the spot by a tracking device on Dug's collar. Muntz throws a lantern beneath Carl's home, setting fire to it. Carl ignores Kevin and runs over to extinguish the flames as Muntz takes Kevin on board and leaves. Angry and disheartened, Carl yells at Dug and tells Russell that he's taking his home to Paradise Falls if it kills him. He manages to set his house down on the Falls, but loses Russell's respect for leaving Kevin.
Carl goes inside the house and sits down to look at Ellie's adventure book. Saddened that she never got to see the Falls, he is about to close it when he discovers added pictures near the end, documenting their life together. On the last page is a note written by Ellie that says thanks for the adventure, now go have a new one! Enlightened and inspired, Carl goes outside in time to see Russell take off with a few balloons, using a leaf blower as propulsion. Carl empties his home of extra furniture, allowing it to become airborne once again, and follows Russell. He finds Dug on his porch and happily exclaims that Dug is his dog and he is his master. Russell manages to sneak aboard Muntz's zeppelin but is quickly caught and tied to a chair. Muntz sits him on the ships bomb-bay doors and flips the switch for them to open. Carl flies in and manages to rescue Russell in time, setting him inside the house while he goes into the zeppelin with Dug to fetch Kevin. Hes able to distract the guard dogs with a tennis ball from his walker and frees Kevin but is confronted by Muntz. They engage in a sword fight while Russell, freed of his ties, fights off a squadron of dogs in fighter planes. He regains control of the house and returns to help Carl, who has climbed to the top of the zeppelin with Kevin. Dug has, meanwhile, faced off against Alpha and outsmarted him, effectively becoming the new alpha, and runs off to meet the others topside.
Kevin, Dug, and Carl run for the house which Russell has landed on the wing of the zeppelin, but Muntz appears with a rifle and shoots at them, causing the house to slip and dangle in the air. Carl struggles to hold onto the house with the hose while Muntz goes in after Kevin. Carl lures Kevin, carrying Dug and Russell, out of the house with chocolate and Muntz attempts to jump out of the window after them. He doesn't make the jump as his foot gets caught in some balloon strings and, weighing too much for the balloons to support him, he falls to his death. As Kevin, Dug, and Russell make it back to the zeppelin, Carl is forced to release his house, which slowly descends into the clouds, a loss which Carl accepts as being for the best.
Kevin is returned to her three chicks and Carl takes Russell and Dug home where Russell attends his senior explorer ceremony. When Russell's father fails to present him with his final badge, Carl fulfills the role and gives Russell a grape soda badge that Ellie gave him when they first met, calling it the Ellie badge. Afterwards, they sit on a curb together in front of an ice cream shop, Carl acting as a surrogate grandfather to Russell, The Spirit of Adventure anchored above them.
At Paradise Falls, Carl and Ellie's house has landed right at the spot where it was meant to be: on the cliff overlooking the falls.
