Six Spooky September Recs
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I know, it's not September yet, but it's coming soon, and I always feel like the beginning of autumn is a perfectly good time to start getting into the Halloween mood. So I'm recommending six books to help you get this year's spooky season going. I've tried to restrict myself to less famous or more contemporary works (we all love The Haunting of Hill House, yes, yours truly included, but it's a pretty well-known novel), and only picked books that really stayed with me. Mind the content warnings on StoryGraph for each of these.
The Red Tree by Caitlín R. Kiernan is a very, very good eldritch horror novel with a complex and deeply flawed lesbian protagonist; it's also an unsubtle but insightful examination of mental illness, toxic relationships, and the way people sometimes just can't do right by each other. Lots of hypnotic prose, bitter dialogue, and some nightmarishly beautiful imagery.
Sisters by Daisy Johnson is a very sharp, contemporary literary thriller that puts a new spin on the 'woman who has something wrong with her moves into house that has something wrong with it' Gothic trope. I picked this book up just on a whim and got completely hypnotized by the corrosive character dynamics and the haunting atmosphere.
Cast a Cold Eye by Alan Ryan is, simply put, my favorite ghost story. Set in a remote Irish village, it's the slowest of slow burns but utterly terrifying sometimes, written in literary, imaginative prose and threaded with themes of community, history and tradition examined thoughtfully through literal and metaphorical hauntings. Also, the writing is just genuinely beautiful.
Through the Woods by Emily Carroll: THE horror comic book for me. Gorgeous art and terrifying little tales (including the celebrated His Face All Red), what more do you need?
Experimental Film by Gemma Files is another excellent eldritch horror story told through a very unique perspective. The novel is about Lois, a bitter film critic who is trying to balance a difficult family life with the disappointment of her professional career, until she stumbles across a mystery in cinematic history that leads her to something terrifying. I'm pretty hard to freak out, but man, this book always does the trick. (For bonus nightmares, also read her short story each thing i show you is a piece of my death, which explains a certain side character's backstory and is literally the scariest goddamn thing I've ever read.)
And finally, Killer Verse: Poems of Murder and Mayhem is exactly what it sounds like: a poetry anthology examining the act of murder, from old ballads to contemporary poetry and through various points of view. Some of the poems are horrifying, some are bleak and some are really sad, but they all make for a hell of a read.
Happy haunting, fellow bookworms!

“Monster” Series 2 and 3?
Tumblr media
To the surprise of pretty much nobody, Netflix announced that the success of Monster - The Jeffrey Dahmer Story meant they were were renewing the show as a new anthology show for at least two seasons, Monster, slightly akin to how American Horror Story season one become AHS - Murder House retrospectively.
Evan Peters was impressive in the eponymous role of Dahmer, after having gained prominence in the AHS universe for main roles in nine out of the eleven seasons completed to this date (the only two missing were 1984 and NYC). So I began to wonder, what two monsters could feature in the next two seasons, and what Ryan Murphy favourites could feature in the roles?
I was going to do a build-up of anticipation, but instead I’ll skip it and jump straight to the monsters, which I believe will be John Wayne Gacy and Ed Gein. Both are not only famous serial killers memorable just as much as Dahmer, but both men featured in brief appearances in the Dahmer season, and Murphy has a habit of foreshadowing future seasons in AHS. Examples include references to ‘crazy’ in Murder House as a foreshadow to the setting of an asylum in, well, Asylum, which itself mentions ‘witches’ and has someone demonstrate telekinesis, both of which appear in season three Coven.
The question may be who will play Gacy and Gein respectively, and starting with Gacy, it probably won’t surprise many that I reckon John Carroll Lynch is perfect for the role. Lynch has not only impressed as the main suspect for the eponymous killer in Zodiac, but has appeared as both Gacy himself and the terrifying Twisty The Clown in American Horror Story. He’s a tremendous character actor who can balance that genial nature that made him seem so unthreatening and then that shift into terror. His work alone in Zodiac and the scene below demonstrates that:
youtube
The one I’m curious about is who could play Ed Gein, as despite being a major inspiration for many famous movie serial killers (Leatherface, Norman Bates, Buffalo Bill), there’s never been a major film or television production that focused on the original killer. For me, I’m kind of torn between two actors, one is Joseph Fiennes, who could demonstrate the younger version of Gein but may be too clean cut for the role. The other, and possibly more likely, could be Denis O’Hare, whose physicality and older looking appearance may be better suited in the role of Ed Gein, especially as the main focus would likely be in Gein’s 40s-50s.
Who would you have feature in the next two seasons of Monster? Do you think there could be further seasons? A season dedicated to Albert Fish could be massively disturbing...

Robert Ryan and Barbara Stanwyck in Clash by Night (Fritz Lang, 1952) Cast: Barbara Stanwyck, Paul Douglas, Robert Ryan, Marilyn Monroe, Keith Andes, J. Carrol Naish, Silvio Minciotti. Screenplay: Alfred Hayes, based on a play by Clifford Odets. Cinematography: Nicholas Musuraca. Art direction: Carroll Clark, Albert S. D'Agostino. Film editing: George Amy. Music: Roy Webb. There's a wonderful moment in the middle of Fritz Lang's Clash by Night that almost makes up for the talky melodrama of the rest of the film: Stealing from the romantic gesture executed by Paul Henreid in Now, Voyager (Irving Rapper, 1942), Lang has Earl Pfeiffer (Robert Ryan) light two cigarettes at once and hand one of them to Mae Doyle (Barbara Stanwyck). She looks at it with distaste for a moment, then tosses it over her shoulder, takes out her own pack of cigarettes, and lights one herself. It's possible that the moment is spelled out in Alfred Hayes's screenplay, or in the play by Clifford Odets on which it's based, but it's the perfect embodiment of Stanwyck's great gift for playing women in charge. In fact, Stanwyck's character is hardly ever fully in charge -- Mae Doyle can't control her life because of the men in it, which she describes as either "all little and nervous like sparrows or big and worried like sick bears." The problem with Clash by Night is not the cast, which is uniformly watchable, or the direction, which does what it can with the material, particularly by exploiting the film's setting -- Monterey, the bay, the fishing fleet, and Cannery Row -- but the screenplay. It's full of Odets characters who can't resolve their internal conflicts but also can't stop talking about them. Even the secondary characters, like Jerry D'Amato's father and uncle, can't help putting in their two cents, often in florid Odetsian metaphor. The title of the film comes from Matthew Arnold's "Dover Beach," in which the speaker laments the loss of faith in a world that has "neither joy, nor love, nor light, / Nor certitude, nor peace, nor help for pain." It's a place where "ignorant armies clash by night." That bleak Victorian pessimism, however, doesn't translate very well to a story in which the clashing armies are men and women, a battle of the sexes that's a little too conventional in concept. Mae returns to her family home in Monterey, and immediately starts making a mess of things by attracting not only the good-hearted Jerry but also his cynical burnt-out friend Earl. Since Jerry is played by the somewhat schlubby Paul Douglas and Earl by the handsome Ryan, we can see immediately where this is going to go, and the wait for it to get there gets a little tedious. There's also a rather pointless secondary plot involving Mae's brother, Joe, and his girlfriend, Peggy, who are played by Keith Andes and Marilyn Monroe. The backstories that stars and their personae bring to the roles they play are often valuable. Here, however, Marilyn's presence in the cast has unbalanced our subsequent reaction to the film, which can never be watched without the irrelevant knowledge of the actress's skyrocketing career, troubled relationship with her directors (including Lang, who terrified her so much that she vomited before performing a scene), and pitiable demise. Peggy is a small role, and she plays it well, but it was never meant to be the principal reason many people watch Clash by Night.

Big Sky: Season 2 (2021-2022)
Plot premise:  Cassie is still trying to locate Ronald, as Jenny decides she can operate better by rejoining the county sheriff department and later finds herself catching up with an old friend who is currently undercover in a drug ring. She investigates a truck crash that results in missing drugs and money, while Cassie, Mark, and Jerrie locate the MHP officer who helped Scarlet, only to later find him murdered. Unknown to the detectives, four teens who were at the crash scene took the drugs and money. Meanwhile, Ronald has been chained up and imprisoned by someone who appears to be Legarski's twin brother. Based on the series of books by C.J. Box.
Network: ABC Episodes (and episode length): 18 (42-43 mins) Creator: David E. Kelley Cast: Katheryn Winnick, Kylie Bunbury, Dedee Pfeiffer, Brian Geraghty, Jesse James Keitel, John Carroll Lynch, Patrick Gallagher, J. Anthony Pena, Anja Savcic, Omar Metwally, Janina Gavankar, Ryan O'Nan, Logan Marshall-Green, Zoë Noelle Baker, Jamie-Lynn Sigler IMDB | RottenTomatoes
± The story's not bad but the writing is, sometimes. The teens are still always inconsistent and the conversations and character consistency is kind of awful. [SPOILERS AHEAD] I do very much appreciate that Ronald's dead, cause seriously no one can friggin' defeat this lanky dork that there's a trail of bodies behind him. And there's finally characters i like; Ren and Donno are super specifically weird and i like it. There's Jerrie, of course, but she's super low key.
I knew that Travis wasn't gonna be a bad guy --gone rogue maybe-- but not an inherently bad guy, cause all of the "bad" people so far have avoided the traditionally attractive casting. :)))
And, of course, i've finally caught up to the reason i started watching in the first place, Sheriff Beau Arlen: very Texan, very unf. I wonder if when they closed on the contract with Jensen was when they decided to include Carry On Wayward Son several episodes prior to his appearance. :))

✨MBTI Types as Movie Characters🎥
The Analysts🔍🧠 (NTs)
-------------------------------------------
ENTJ, The Commander
Tumblr media
Miranda Priestly // The Devil Wears Prada
One of my favorite movies. The Alpha Bitch, Editor and Chief of Runway, played by the always incredible Meryl Streep, is definitely an ENTJ. She's ambitious, intelligent, and a strong, but suave leader who values efficiency and expects people to be at their best. All stacking up to create a chic as all shit powerhouse of success. Some find her cold and even heartless, but as we see later in the movie, she's actually a sensitive person who secretly doesn't like her ice queen reputation, but deals with it as a part of having haters. Another very ENTJ aspect to her character is the fierce love she has for her family (especially her daughters, whom she'd kill for) and her closest friends. Lastly let's not for get her smooth talking ability to burn people with some seriously clever and iconic lines.
Bonus:
Tumblr media
ENTP, The Debater
Tumblr media
Wade Wilson // Deadpool & Deadpool 2
In my opinion, hands down the best superhero movie(s). Played and directed by Canada's Golden Boy, Ryan Reynolds, Wade Wilson, the lovable and hilarious antihero, known by his alias Deadpool, is a classic ENTP. Yes his trademark blunt wit and chaotic style alone give off serious ENTP vibes, but what really sells his character as The Debater is his determination. No matter if its something small like being screwed on an unfair coupon policy, a deep meaningful principle, or fighting for someone they love, either their determination wins out or they'll die trying. This characteristic is actually the driving force of BOTH movies. In the first installment we see Wade fighting to save the love of his life from his old nemesis (in typical superhero fashion), but Wade's ENTP-ness gets a huge boost in the second installment where we see him fight to protect a mutant boy, he barely knows, who he first meets at a mutant reform school, which lets be honest is just an allegory for conversion therapy camp.
Bonus:

INTJ, The Architect
Tumblr media
Clarice Starling // The Silence of the Lambs
Award winning, continuously suspenseful, and tastefully creepy, this horror thriller is one the best. Jodi Foster won an Academy Award for Best Actress for her role as FBI Cadet, Clarice Starling. A more underrated INTJ fictional character, but a perfect fit nonetheless. The mere fact that Clarice is not even an actual agent yet and is already pulled onto a serial killer case, by the head of the FBI's Behavioral Science Unit (now the Behavioral Analysis Unit) is a clear mark of an INTJ. The Architect's famous organized intellect trait is the catalyst (the reason she was chosen) for Clarice's decent into the madness of the Buffalo Bill Case. Tasked with interviewing psychiatrist and serial killer (with a genius level IQ) Dr. Hannibal Lecter aka Hannibal the Cannibal, to get his view on the case. Clarice keeps completely calm and focused as Lecter attempts to manipulate and rattle her. Not only solving the breadcrumb puzzle Lecter sends her on to find Buffalo Bill, but at one point even being a step ahead of the genius psychopath. And let's not forget her super INTJ moment in where we see her her breaking down next to her car and crying from the immense stress she's under, to immediately compartmentalizing and getting a 10/10 score at the FBI shooting range.

INTP, The Logician
Tumblr media
Alice Kingsley// Alice in Wonderland (2010)
One of my all time favorite movies, Tim Burton's 2010 continuation to the original story, (written by Lewis Carrol and made into a Disney animated movie) takes Alice's character from a simple curious little girl to a deeper young adult character. Mia Wasikowska plays a nineteen year old Alice who finds herself (to her chagrin) at her surprise engagement party where a boring and utterly obnoxious young Lord is to propose. After several awkward interactions: from her crazy Aunt, to her aristocratic future mother in-law, and finding her sister's husband with another woman, she ends up in front of the entire party being proposed to. And in true INTP fashion she makes a faint excuse and physically runs from her problems. Eventually falling down the rabbit hole, a good metaphor for the chaotic inter working of an INTP's mind, she finds herself in a place called Underland. Alice's personal objective in the movie (unlike most who's objective would be to escape the weird world) is to discover if she's dreaming, going mad, or if she's actually been there before, stopping every now and then to do a few rebellious acts to help her friends. There were many characters I've seen for the INTP, all are well thought out and accurate, however I think Logicians can relate the most to Alice's need for independence, intense curiosity, loath for societal expectations, awkward but confident demeanor and increasingly out of the box thinking.

Storyteller: Mikazuki Munechika, Kogitsunemaru, Nikkari Aoe
Sorry this took so long, love~! But here I am with these headcanons! I hope you love em!
Warnings: Nikkari can and will tell ghost stories, it’s basically Buzzfeed Unsolved but 100% more creepier. Mikazuki is a lil shit. Kogi is probs the only trustworthy one. Short general headcanons for da boysssss
Mikazuki Munechika
Oh ask Mikazuki to tell you a story he will smile softly, pat his lap (if you two are dating) or at the spot beside him, and will asking, “What kind, master? I know many.” and he does.
He may look like a simple little jiji but this man has GOSSIP. He knows what the hell is going on in the citadel somehow, either by word of mouth or spying on everything and seeing whatever the hell they are doing. Maybe he’ll embellish the stories just to cause some chaos in the citadel and just to see you or a little one laugh, but Mikazuki does aim to please.
Lord help you if there is some romance going on in the citadel. Mikazuki is always somehow the first to know who is in love with who, even worse when he can tease them about it. Especially when it comes to you. He may let out some subtle hints that he knows what the hell is going on before full on explaining that he will do his best to help you get together with that person. If you’re in love with him however, jiji just blurts it out no qualms here.
Oh he adores telling stories to the little ones. Those stories are always of lil shenanigans around the citadel, and probably fairytales and folktales. He will happily read to the little ones from a storybook. The thing is, as a storyteller, he may pause and try to keep the suspense, a guessing game in a way.
“Ho ho ho, do try and guess what happens next.” he would say with a smirk.
And then there are times when he will ‘forget’ a part of a story and just make up shit on the fly. He’s really good at that. Along with sounding convincing most of time, you can’t tell if his little gossip stories are real or not at times. He’s very vague at times, probably because he’s a lil shit and will blame his forgetfulness on his old age.
Jiji also tells stories that have a moral behind them, mostly for the younger generation. It’s good to tell stories and cautionary tales at time ya know? Especially the ones with a little violence. He will tone it down depending on who is present but will not hesitate to go into the gorey details if it suits him/trying to give someone a good scare.
Finds horror stories hilarious, can and will read some to everyone. Don’t go to him at night, he’s up reading horror stories. Will tell you all about them/tell anyone who is listening to him. No one is sleeping tonight, for better or for worse.
Even his master is not safe from the gossip stories that Mikazuki will say, you have been warned.
Kogitsunemaru
Animal stories. Nothing but animal stories. Fairytales, folktales, myths, all of the above. Maybe it’s because he can relate to the said creatures of the world, forged by the god Inari and all. He has a soft spot for animal based tales.
But telling stories is something that Kogi adores! The minute you ask him, his eyes will light up and will jovially pat his lap or the spot beside him. The minute you or a little one sits down, he will oh so happily go rant about whatever was on his mind.
He doesn’t tell stories of the others around the citadel no that’s mikazuki’s job but if he does talk about his day, it’s always lighthearted and sweet. Full of nothing but praise for their coworkers but also sometimes he will have a dig at them. Perhaps it’s Mikazuki’s influence? Maybe Kogi want’s to go apeshit? Who knows? No one knows, only Kogitsunemaru.
Kogi lives for making people smile, ruffling their hair as he tells them stories. He will only pick out stories that have happy endings and that is a fact.
Will make up funny voices for each character/imitate the voices of the other people around the citadel.
See while Mikazuki will gossip to inflict 70-80% psychic damage and 20% to help, Kogitsunemaru’s gossip are at least 50/50, they are meant to help but sometimes he does give out psychic damage.
Only wholesome ghost stories in this house. No way is he going to tell the more terrifying ones that will cause a ho to stay up past their bed time because ghosts scary.
Is also slightly into conspiracy theories for shits and giggles.
Nikkari Aoe
SAY GOODBYE TO SLEEPING IF YOU ASK HIM TO TELL YOU A STORY. GOD FORBID HE TELLS YOU A GHOST STORY.
Nikkari always seems to know the best ghost stories. If you happen to be into that kind of thing. Stories you haven’t heard of before, tall tales, cautionary tales, folk tales. So on and so forth.
Despite this, Nikkari knows to tone down his stories for the little ones and you if you lot cannot handle ghost stories.
Nikkari may know a lot of stories, but he will try his best not to scare anyone around him. Because of this, he will pick up stories from the other swords or even from books he has to read.
But Nikkari is really good at making up stories too, his stories are almost unorthodox. Think Lewis Carroll and Alice in Wonderland kind of nonsense. You can still make out what the hell is going on, but he paints such a strange and vivid scene that you cannot help but admire the poetic words that pour of his mouth in utter awe.
Of course, if you or another one asks to hear a different story, a more wholesome one, Nikkari will do his best. It will be wholesome but it’s just full of so many twists and turns! He knows what to do to make your hair stand on its end, for a good reason this time. His voice is super nice after all, you can fall asleep to that shit.
Will happily read a story to the tantous or you! As said before, Nikkari has a very soft voice. He becomes a wonderful reader of like sweet wholesome bedtime stories as he strokes the head of anyone who is with him at the time.
He is also very much into conspiracy theories. Think Ryan Bergara energy but with Shane’s snark.

✨✨ TOP FIVES FOR 2020 ✨✨
2020 was, i think we can all agree, a massively chaotic year but i have never consumed as much media before in my life, so i thought others might benefit from my slothery uh, connoisseur.... ship?  yes, that.  below are the books, comics, shows, and movies that got me through!
B O O K S .
the starless sea, by erin morgenstern - i loooove this book because it loves me back.  it says: ‘oh, you’re a reader, well i have just the thing for you.’  it luxuriates in language and story and riddles and fairy tales and it feels like an entire library in a single tome.
they never learn, by layne fargo - oh fuuuuuck, this was satisfying.  i thought it might feel a little exploitative as it is very aware of the zeitgeist and likely would not exist without the #metoo movement but it never ever did.  this was a fucking ROMP, period.  reading about a woman getting away with murdering skeezy guy after rapey guy after shitty human just made me happier and happier.
moonflower murders, by anthony horowitz - this is the second in the susan ryeland series (and the first was hardcore good fun too) and really feels very classic mystery with the artful twist of catering to the literary community.  mainly because: susan isn’t a detective, she’s an editor and she gets drafted in this time because the clue to what happened to a missing woman is in a book she edited, if she can find it.  both of the books in this series have such an excellent coming together moment that is rare af to find.
the invisible life of addie larue, by v.e. schwab - the writing in this is just so good.  it has that feel to me where i just want to drop the book and open up my own page and let my fingers fly.  it’s that inspiring kind of writing that reminds you of all the things language can do.
crown of feathers/heart of flames, by nicki pau preto - aaahhh, this series is SO FREAKING GOOD!  why is there not more of a fandom for it, why???? it is so many of my favorite tropes all resting perfectly together to the point where you almost forget they’re tropes because they just so naturally evolved there.  ugh, it’s just.... it’s so heart-bursty good.
.... number 5, part 2?  raybearer, by jordan ifueko - this was just so original and i was invested af.  like, what a brilliant idea though and an even better execution??  i loved every character and am so looking forward to the next in the series so i can get to know them even better!!
honorable mentions (sh*t i still liked a whole heckuva lot): you/hidden bodies, by caroline kepnes // writers & lovers, by lily king // i’ll be gone in the dark, by michelle mcnamara // the faceless old woman who secretly lives in your home, by joseph fink & jeffrey cranor // girl, serpent, thorn, by melissa bashardoust // a little life, by hanya yanagihara // the guinevere deception, by kiersten white // obsidio (and the entire illuminae series), by amie kaufman & jay kristoff // the bone houses, by emily lloyd-jones // house of salt and sorrows, by erin a. craig // we hunt the flame, by hafsah faizal // savage legion, by matt wallace // blacktop wasteland, by s.a. cosby // crier’s war, by nina varela // the empress of salt and fortune/when the tiger came down the mountain, by nghi vo // upright women wanted, by sarah gailey // the monster of elendhaven, by jennifer giesbrecht // a deadly education, by naomi novik // you let me in, by camilla bruce // when you ask me where i’m going, by jasmin kaur // the lights go out in lychford/last stand in lychford (and the entire lychford series), by paul cornell // the devil and the dark water, by stuart turton // serpent & dove, by shelby mahurin // one by one, by ruth ware // ruthless gods (this was SUCH an upshot from the first book - it’s worth sticking with if you’re on the fence), by emily a. duncan // cemetery boys, by aiden thomas // the inheritance games, by jennifer lynn barnes // the fortunate ones (2021 release), by ed tarkington
C O M I C S .
cosmoknights, by hannah templer - the art was gorgeous, the gayness was glorious, and just.... hot HOOOOOOOOT lady knights in space?!  a princess winning her own hand?  find something not to love in there, i dare you.
don’t go without me, by rosemary valero-o’connell - wow. wow wow wow wow wow.  the writing was stunning, so lyrical and atmospheric and deep, and rosemary has to be one of my favorite artists but even that managed to come as a beautiful surprise because it was just so freaking bold.
through the woods, by emily carroll - i loooove emily carroll, the convergence of spine-tingling horror and art that feeds into it, that is both visually and aesthetically pleasing, is hard to beat!  p.s. i also read beneath the dead oak tree from her this year and it was also a BANGER.
the impending blindness of billie scott, by zoe thorogood - zoe is someone that i just want to follow.  she’s just starting and i want to be there for every single step.  i love her art style and her ability to tell a story with it.
above the clouds, by melissa pagluica - this was so unique, and such a baller concept, as nearly half the entire book is conveyed only through the art and yet you’re never once lost, never once confused as to what any character is thinking or feeling.  it’s a story within a story and only one of those gets words though they both are chock full of emotion!
um.... number 5, part 2? crowded, by christopher sebela - everything about this series is fun af.  crowd-funded assassination and a hirable bodyguard who’s rated like an uber driver???  and the chemistry between the two mains is so great and gay!!
honorable mentions: monster and the beast, by renji // long exposure, by kam ‘mars’ heyward // fence, by c.s. pacat // invisible kingdom, by g. willow wilson // ms. marvel, by g. willow wilson // heathen, by natasha alterici // not drunk enough, by tess stone // giant days, by john allison // die, by kieron gillen // be prepared, by vera brosgol // ascender (sequel to descender, which is also great), by jeff lemire // the unbeatable squirrel girl, by ryan north // bang! bang! boom!, by melanie schoen // gideon falls, by jeff lemire // life of melody, by mari costa // cry wolf girl, by ariel slamet ries // the tea dragon society, by katie o’neill // ptsd, by guillaume singelin // heartstopper, by alice oseman // solutions and other problems, by allie brosh // finding home, by hari conner // the magic fish, by trung le nguyen // something is killing the children, by james tynion iv // the weight of them, by noelle stevenson // spill zone, by scott westerfeld // skyward, by joe henderson // miles morales, by saladin ahmed
F I L M S.
parasite, dir. bong joon ho - oh it was satisfying, oh it was suspenseful, oh i had to watch some of it through my fingers but i loooooooved it.  such a good story and so well made.
knives out, dir. rian johnson - okay, everything about this movie was amazing.  every single character was fun as hell and i could’ve watched an entire movie about each of them.  what a great fucking mystery!
blindspotting, dir. carlos lopez estrada -  this made my heart hurt so damn much.  what glorious writing, acting, and story!
portrait of a lady on fire, dir. celine sciamma - gooooorgeous cinematography, amazing chemistry, and such a soft, atmospheric film.
the farewell, dir. lulu wang - i cried and my heart felt so full and i love it so so much.
um.... number 5, part 2? someone great, dir. jennifer kaytin robinson - no part of me expected to love a netflix movie this much but it’s a love story that doesn’t get told that often??  the end of a relationship and the true love of friendship and i love these girls and i love jenny and nate’s broken relationship.
honorable mentions: eighth grade, dir. bo burnham // booksmart, dir. olivia wilde // midsommar, dir. ari aster // the curse of la llorona, dir. michael chaves // the secret life of pets 2, dirs. chris renaud & jonathan del val // jojo rabbit, dir. taika waititi // the invisible man, dir. leigh whannell // the favourite, dir. yorgos lanthimos // can you ever forgive me?, dir. marielle heller // troop zero, dirs. bert & bertie // ready or not, dirs. matt bettinelli-olpin & tyler gillett // brave, dirs. mark andrews & brenda chapman & steve purcell // the half of it, dir. alice wu // palm springs, dir. max barbakow // doctor sleep, dir. mike flanaghan // uncut gems, dirs. benny sadfie & josh sadfie // birds of prey, dir. cathy van // bloodshot, dir. dave wilson // the old guard, dir. gina prince-bythewood // enola holmes, dir. harry bradbeer // hocus pocus, dir. kenny ortega // always be my maybe, dir. nahnatchka khan // finding dory, dirs. andrew stanton & angus maclane // die hard, dir. john mctiernan
S H O W S .
black sails (2014) - this show, this shooooooooow.  i cannot, it just makes me want to cry with how good it is.  the characters, the EMOTIONS, the story, the plaaaaaan.  like, the creators clearly had a plan for every single step of this show and it was a gOOD, GOOD PLAN.
the untamed (2019) - truly, cheesy good fun with one of the best gay romances ever.  i love these characters and their relationships to each other and the way it glories in its own ridiculousness.
the righteous gemstones (2019) - one of the things that bothered me about my next choice (the ratio of female to male nudity) was so much more realistic in this one (i mean, we’ve all gotten five thousand dick pics and i know like three people?  so the fact that there is so rarely male nudity in shows when there are tits everywhere..... no, how does that even make a tiny bit of sense?).  this show was such great, wonderful, awful fun.  they’re not great people and the show is under no delusion about that and it’s GLORIOUS!
the witcher (2019) - this was just hella fun, i loved the characters and the fantasy elements.  i’m excited for the next season, it’s just entertaining swashbuckling through and through!
fargo (2014) - all of this was really very enjoyable with the through line being somebody fucks shit up and gets involved in something they really shouldn’t be involved in that’s going to swallow them whole.  season one and season three were my stand-out favorites but they were all so violent, clever, and vicious!
um.... number 5, part 2? central park (2020) - um..... so many of the hamilton actors in a muscial cartoon drawn and written by the bob’s burgers team? WHAT ABOUT THAT DOESN’T SOUND AMAZING?!  it was such a joy to hear daveed diggs and leslie odom jr.’s voices again!!
honorable mentions: schitt’s creek // the mandalorian // mr. robot // broadchurch // mindhunter // jack ryan // the good place // the end of the f***ing world // big little lies // elite // kidding // servant // letterkenny // curb your enthusiasm // i am not okay with this // ozark // buzzfeed unsolved: true crime/supernatural // you // runaways // dear white people // dickinson // brooklyn nine-nine // will & grace // 9-1-1 // dead to me // solar opposites // never have i ever // killing eve // what we do in the shadows // grace and frankie // avenue 5 // roswell, new mexico // the bold type // evil // tuca & bertie // impulse // the umbrella academy // watchmen // infinity train // corporate // search party // on becoming a god in central florida // a.p. bio // criminal: uk // the morning show // mythic quest // last week tonight // prodigal son // the great

CRYPTOZOO (Animated)  - Review
DISTRIBUTOR: Magnolia Pictures
Tumblr media
SYNOPSIS: Cryptozookeepers struggle to capture a baku, a legendary dream-eating hybrid creature. A Cryptid expert has been hired by the military to track down and capture these elusive creatures so they can be exploited for their military potential. Lauren Grey, a Cryptid hunter who works for the zoo, begins to wonder if they should display these rare beasts in the confines of a zoo, or if these mythical creatures should remain hidden and unknown.
REVIEW: I was raised on Disney Animation. In 1977 I saw Ralph Bakshi’s “Wizards” and my whole world changed. In the 1990’s my friends and I became devotees of Spike and Mike's Festival of Animation. We reconnected with some animated shorts we had encountered in college and were exposed to so many new filmmakers. Of course we were big fans of “Yellow Submarine,” which we had the pleasure to watch in these very same small arthouse cinemas that offered the many installments of Spike & Mike’s. From the goofy, social commentary, cerebral or political, I cultivated a diverse appreciation for the potential and power of animation.
Over the last few decades, there has been a decline, almost a loss, of the gritty hand drawn animation style. Many are computer generated, or computers are used to clean up the work of the hand drawn work. Also, the stories seem less fantastical as the films are directed towards children and pre-teens, with a large emphasis on licensing and merchandising. Some of them are cool, such as “The Incredibles,” but there are almost no adult animated shorts, much less features.
Dash Shaw’s CRYPTOZOO is a film that stands on the shoulders and pays homage to those films of the 70’s and 80’s in both it’s narrative and look. Shaw, a visionary comic book writer, artist and filmmaker crafts a dreamlike story of opposing sides on different quests to secure these mythological creatures. The images are this raw, hallucinatory style that at times feel like “Yellow Submarine,” minus the musical numbers. There are some classic creatures and some new hybrids that are a mesmerizing mix of design and color.
I really enjoyed the score by John Carroll Kirby. It is not your typical animated score that overly supports the action in the film. It adds substance to the themes and enhances the appearance of the cryptids. He crafts a variety of musical styles and themes that give an earthiness to the visuals and narratives. It adds another dream-like magical element to the film.
The visuals are supported by a classic, universal story of humanity and its place in nature. Powerful as ever, it focuses on the character of Lauren Gray, who is in partnership with Joan, who founded the CRYPTOZOO. Her nemesis Nick shares a similar background, however he views these cryptids as dangerous, while Lauren and Joan feel if people were exposed to them they would be more accepting and less fearful. When Lauren meets a psychic, who predicts what is to come, the medium asks Lauren, “Don’t somethings need to remain hidden?” to which Lauren responds, “That is how they become lost.” The very unique element of Shaw’s tale is that the zoo and the people in charge are mostly female. So there is the added element of the father figure vs. the mother figure in their different philosophies to reside over nature. In the film’s climax he presents a compelling argument as to what the ramifications of the control can take, regardless of positive or negative. He even injects an Eve-like character that stumbles upon the zoo and becomes a catalyst for the story’s climax. He presents a complex narrative when it comes to the feminine through the actions of Lauren, Joan, and the Eve-like character that is interesting in today’s socio-political climate.
From the animation to the narrative, Dash Shaw’s CRYPTOZOO is a refreshing, hypnotic and adult animated parable that is a delight. That it is rough and raw in its style is sure to make it endearing to many animation fans who grew up with those animated films, such as those that appeared under the banner of MTV Animation. You can feel the passion of the filmmakers in every frame and it would be a damn shame if CRYPTOZOO was not nominated for, and won, several awards this season.
