Comparing the societies of Bug Fables to those of Hollow Knight's (especially their gods) is super funny actually. Like, I have issues with the worldbuilding of Bug Fables, but the society is pretty darn stable and moderatly advanced, there's some skirmishes and some magic issues here and there, but nothing too intense. Meanwhile down in Hallownest everyone lives in the shadows of behemoths and dies to their whims, but they just fuckin vibe with it because what else can you do when the very sun is angry at you? The risk is worth it for eternal kingdoms and the possibility of being blessed with strong magic, which is both heavy in the air at all times and also a major part of their technological advancement. It's like comparing a little genaric fantasy kingdom to fucking Atlantis or Olympus, which makes it deeply funny when the two worlds collide

Anime Expo 2023 | BLEACH TYBW panel

Wow, what an experience! It was such a huge honor to be part of this panel by being on the stage with other cosplayers, Viz staff, and Ichigo's JP voice actor, Masakazu Morita!!

I wanted to write about my experience with it in case anyone is interested!

One of my best friends and I were cosplaying Rukia and Orihime (in a shihakusho) this day and we got in line early that was outside for the Bleach panel. As the line moved, we got stopped by Viz Media staff who handed us these numbers (7 and 8) and told us to enter to be part of the "Bankai Contest". At first, all of my friends and I thought it was a raffle because they first mentioned that we can win prizes. But when they told us that we get up on stage, I got nervous and was so hesitant that I almost said no, but thanks to my silly friends peer pressuring encouraging me, I chose to take it, thinking that if I changed my mind later I could just not go up.

The panel started and after about 3/4 of Morita's Q&A, there was a brief pause and the cosplayers who were given numbers were asked to come up to the front for the Bankai/Cosplay contest (There was a total of 11 of us). I thought, "Okay, I'll come up, I'm nervous as hell, but maybe I just stand there. I don't have my glasses on so I won't be able to see the audience's faces or see the sheer amount of people there, right?"

But we were told that the contest is more so who gives the best "Bankai!" shout and Morita will be the judge, and I was like oh no, I have to use my voice?! My mind was racing with how I should deliver my "bankai", trying to get a sense of how Rukia would say it. (Because well, we haven't heard it yet, but soon!)

At this point I think I astral projected because it was truly an out-of-body experience. After my silly and cringe "bankai" I stood next to my friend and the other cosplayers, as depicted in the photo above, while my brain and body were processing the shock of everything.

The Tosen cosplayer accidentally got chosen as being part of the Top 3 but to be fair he was really good so it wouldn't be surprising if he got chosen anyway! Morita then had to choose another cosplayer but when he said "Rukia", I physically turned my body slightly away from him because my brain was like DO NOT PERCEIVE ME, there are 3 Rukia's up here so surely I wouldn't be perceived, but he came up to me and picked me, and I was pretty much dying inside. ;;w;;

The winner out of the Top 3 was chosen out of audience applause, and the Tosen cosplayer won! The prizes were an autographed poster from Morita for each cosplayer, and the Top 3 received Bleach merchandise in a Bleach tote bag.

I didn't even realize I got 2nd place, I only found out about it when my friends told me after the panel ended LOL

Afterward, the panel showed 3 scene previews from Season 2 and they were phenomenal! Anime-only (new) scenes, the visuals, the sound design, it was so good! The cosplayers got front-row seats so my eyes got to drink it all up >:)

Sorry if this was too long of a post, but this was my experience at the Bleach TYBW panel at AX this year! It was absolutely crazy but a lot of fun, and it's crazier to think that I almost refused the number to get up on stage. Thank you so much for reading!!~

Writing Tips: Memorable Character Meetings

A common challenge in story crafting is figuring out how your characters first encounter each other. This initial meeting sets the stage for their future interactions and the overall plot.

To make these meetings engaging and purposeful, characters should share common goals or reasons for teaming up. Here are some simple ways characters can meet:

Shared Objective: Characters may come together when they're seeking the same item. This shared goal can create intrigue and motivation for collaboration.

Common Destination: The characters meet while wanting to go to the same place. While the destination might the same, their reasons for this might not be.

Facing a Common Threat: Introducing characters as they run from the same monster or confront a mutual danger can build instant camaraderie.

Teaming Up for a Challenge: Characters can also meet when they participate in the same game or event on the same team. This serves as a quick setting to establish their dynamics.

reminder to self too but making friends is really just that simple. or getting closer to someone you've always thought was cool but never talked to because you were too intimidated is also just that simple. its much easier if you have a shared interest tbh but. the worst thing is? they say no. or they ghost you.

and if it goes through? social link rank up and you get invited to do stuff!

anyway this week i made friends with a few diff groups of people ive only ever been mutuals with. and i got invited to do a bunch of things with them and got introed to their own respective friendgroups too. so im kinda happy with that!

and it turned out that they too wanted to talk to me since forever but were also just too shy to do so. maybe the world is just full of individuals who want to make friends but are too scared to make the first move.

so sometimes you have to be the one reaching out.

I have had a very busy past few months, and I KNOW that there's no deadline I have to follow for my fanfiction, it's recreational, I shouldn't pressure myself etc. And I've got a good chunk of the next chapter written. But I'm also about to leave for vacation, and RFYL hasn't been updated since MARCH, holy toledo.

So here's a small excerpt. A snack to tide you over.

“Ready to perform the honors?”

“Honors?” Gordon held his hand over the elevator call button. “What are you talking abou–”

He stopped.

He remembered the implications of what he was about to do.

Gordon gritted his teeth and breathed a drawn-out sigh.

“Okay,” he began. “Let’s just preface this. In order to progress through the game, we–”

“Just press the button and kill some innocents already, Gordon.”

“Listen,” Gordon overstepped Bubby’s interruption. “Listen, I know that the elevator is going to come crashing down when I hit this. But–! I mean, I– Look, how does pressing the call button cause the cables to snap, anyway? Who designed this thing, those functions shouldn’t have any– it makes no sense!”

Benrey leaned over to stage-whisper to Tommy. “Denial.”

“It’s not denial!” Gordon denied. “Tommy, you know all about building codes. These aren’t safe elevators! How was Black Mesa planning to deal with, like, a fire evacuation?”

“Now Gordon,” Coomer shook his head. “There’s no need to bring Tommy into your deflection of guilt.”

“I don’t have guilt!” Gordon protested. “I haven’t even hit the button yet! They’re still alive!”

Bubby shrugged. “You hit it last time. Those deaths are still on you.”

“But they’re not dead now!” Gordon cried. “In this, like, version of these events– in this timeline, I haven’t killed them yet. I haven’t killed them.”

Benrey nudged Tommy again. “He said ‘yet’. Planning something.”

“Gordon, it was very noble of you to resurrect our coworkers–”

“Thank you, Doctor Coomer.”

“--Just so you had the opportunity to kill them a second time!”

Gordon suppressed the words that wanted to leave his mouth.
