It was the twin’s 14th birthday and the rest of the Armstrong family tried to have lively spirits for the occasion. Most of them have lost hope that Elisabeth would ever return. Almost four months have passed since then.

“Oh look it’s Lucas and isn’t that your brother, Julian?” Juliet asked in annoyance.
“If we pretend that they don’t-”
Lucas’s loud voice interrupted Lydia, ”Ruth! Long time no see.”
Ruth shifted uncomfortably remembering the last time they saw each other. She was a crying baby and he always liked to tease her. It wasn’t something to be embarrassed about considering she was 3 years old.
“Hello,” Ruth said politely.
Juliet noticed the uncomfortable look on her older sister, “What do you want Munch?”
She hardly acknowledged his companion considering he was staring at the ground every time he looked over at Ruth. Ew could Luisa’s brother...?
“Your ma asked us to keep an eye on you girls. My name is Julian, don’t know if Lydia has mentioned it,” Julian finally spoke up.
“We’re doing just fine,” Juliet said with a huff.
“We were about to start our homework. If you’re interested in joining us,” Ruth said with a kind smile.
She knew Lucas was failing terribly and could get all the help he could get. Her smile faltered when she realized she was only smiling at Lucas and she quickly gave Julian a small smile as well.
“Ruth!” Juliet protested but her older sister gave her a stern look. She rolled her eyes and mumbled a fine.
“You better be on your best behavior Julian or I’ll tell ma,” Lydia warned him.
Both boys smiled and agreed. They would be foolish not to accept.

Lucas was awestruck when he saw Ruth. They hadn’t been in contact from some time now and they’ve matured since then. He wasn’t the only one that took notice of this. Julian wasn’t hiding his attraction towards her.
“Ruth” both boys said at the same time.
Ruth smiled politely at both boys and greeted them, “I’m surprised to see you at the market Lucas.”
Ruth and Julian chuckled together and Lucas felt out of place. Have they formed a friendship without him knowing. Julian had taken charge of the conversation and Lucas had stepped aside by then.

Ruth turned 14 and Juliet turned 13!! Ruth may have been my favorite but now I think Juliet is quickly stealing that spot now. She doesn’t even have any “bad” traits but she still gets into arguments with her dad any chance she gets.

The girls were getting some homework done when little Osvaldo decided to grace them with his presence.
“Roof roof dog,” he said while staring down at Ruth.
Juliet couldn’t contain her laughter and Ruth closed her homework slowly, “Osvaldo! That isn’t a nice thing to say.”
Osvaldo didn’t pay any mind to his older sister and walked away. Ruth gave Juliet a stern look, ”You shouldn’t encourage him like that.”
“Oh come on you wanted to laugh to,” Juliet said with a smile.

Wolfgang asked for a private walk with Juliet. Edward agreed a bit too eagerly because he never thought anyone would be interested in his daughter. Unlike Ruth, Juliet lacked in presenting her feminine side. She was unladylike most of the time and it did raise a few eyebrows.
“Thought I’d let you take a breather again,” Wolfgang finally spoke after a moment of silence.
"Thank you. My mother had me peeling potatoes for the past hour. I thought about chopping off my own hand,” Juliet joked.
"How are you? I heard from my mother and Julian that your sister has passed. I’m sorry for your loss,” he said.
Juliet’s smile disappeared from her face. It’s been nearly a year since the funeral and she has tried to repress her feelings ever since.
"I prefer if we don’t speak of her right now. Every waking moment she’s all I think about. I couldn’t even apologize to her,” Juliet felt the tears wail up in her eyes again.
“It’s neither your sister’s or your fault you know. Just the other day the Lovendale family lost their son a week ago. I’ve been asking around and it’s a lot more common than you’d think,” Wolfgang said.
Juliet perked up at his statement even though she felt she shouldn’t. After all those families lives would never be the same again if their child never returns.
“So you’ve been researching? For me?” Juliet teased.
Wolfgang chuckled, “I like to know things is all. Not because it pertains to you dear Juliet.”
She smiled, “My father would be sad to hear this. You know he thinks you fancy me.”
He let out a real laugh this time and she joined in. It was silly because they have never felt an ounce bit of romance when they’re alone.
“I don’t think I could ever fancy a girl or anyone for that matter. The thought just leaves a sour taste in my mouth for some odd reason,” he said making a face.
Juliet had never given romance a thought. She didn’t feel those butterflies Ruth is always on about whenever she’s with Julian. At least she didn’t feel that way for a boy.
“I,” she began to speak but remained silent instead.
He waited for her to speak again but she had already closed herself off again. He sighed and lifted her face but she wouldn’t quite meet his eyes, “You don’t have to say anything if you’re not ready.”
“Things would be better if I wasn’t the way I am. My father always talks about me in such a way that makes me feel like waste. Realistically I can’t live with them forever and they’ll think of me strange for not finding myself a husband. I just don’t want to live a lie,” Juliet finally let everything out.
She hid her face in his arms and the remain like that for a couple of minutes before Wolfgang spoke.
“It wouldn’t be a lie if it were me. We could go off to San Myshuno so we’d be away from your family in case they catch on,” he said.
Juliet was surprised by his proposal, “Wolfgang I don’t have the kind of money to up and leave Windenburg. I’m not going to allow you to pay for everything.”
“It should be the husband’s duty to provide for his wife,” Wolfgang cringed and Juliet snorted at his comment.
“At least that’s what my brother says I hardly pay him any mind. Nevertheless, I have more than enough money and you can pay it back when we leave. What do you say?” he asked.
It was tempting but could they really get away with it?
“I want the pretties ring you can find,” she said with a smile.

Dearest Mama,
Giving birth to my sweet Juliet was the easiest compared to Ruth. I was no longer alone even if Edward had to step out. He nearly fainted and almost hit his head on the door!
You should see Ruth’s face when Juliet was born. I have never seen a child glow the way she did! Oh how I miss you and papa terribly. Not I day goes by when I don’t miss you.
Love,
Consuelo (stamped 1891)

It was late at night when Ruth and Juliet reached their home. Ruth couldn’t bare to break the news to their mother. How could she be so irresponsible?
“This is all my fault Juliet. My fault and not yours.”
“Why are you home at this hour? You had us worried sick,” Edward yelled at them. They flinched at his tone and Ruth began to toy with the sides of her dress to keep herself from crying.
Before Ruth could say anything Consuelo spoke, “Where is Elisabeth?”
“She was with us for most of our time at the market but we, no I, took my eyes off her for just a second,” Ruth said but she couldn’t help but choke out the last words.
“I don’t know where Elisabeth has gone.”
It all happened in slow motion as Consuelo fell to the ground and Edward barely managed to catch her in his arms. The room was filled with tears until the sun came up.

Juliet was dying to know her sister’s love dilemma. She wasn’t at all surprised because Ruth looked more feminine than she did. The boys at their school always looked at her sister and ignored her and honestly she did not mind at all.
“Seems like Lucas and Julian were fighting for your attention,” Juliet said with a smirk.
Ruth shook her head, “Did it look that way? I need to pay more attention people well talk.”
Juliet rolled her eyes, “As if they don’t do that already if we merely stand a centimeter too close to a man. Now tell your dear baby sister who you like the most now.”
“Juliet!” Ruth exclaimed but she couldn’t help but smiled as she whispered, “If you must know I believe I’ve taken a liking to Julian.”
Juliet smiled widely, “Good because the poor fellow has liked you since we were Elisabeth age.”
“Speaking of Elisabeth where is she?” Ruth asked as she looked behind. She expected to see her little sister but there was no one there.
Juliet couldn’t help but look, “She’s with Sofia’s child before I came over here.”
Ruth began to worry as she scooped around the small market. Children walked by them laughing but Elisabeth wasn’t with them. They began yelling for Elisabeth and asking around if they’ve seen her but no avail.

The Armstrongs can finally afford to have a portrait taken of them as a whole family. (I took a full paychecks worth it seemed only fair)

Content warning: Post contains imagery of grieving and mentions death.
The Armstrongs sadly didn’t make it time to be with Elisabeth in her final days. Her health had declined rapidly and she died a day before they arrived. Consuelo never imagined she would have to bury one of her children far away from home.
She cried for hours near Elisabeth’s grave asking for forgiveness.
“I wasn’t the best mother. If I had cared for you more my querida this wouldn’t have happened to you. Perdóname hijita mia,” she wept until no tears were left.
Edward comforted his wife by holding her shaking body. He wanted to break down the same way she did. It felt like a large piece of him was empty once again. His youngest daughter gone for good this time and he wished that Jefferson had never found them. Maybe it would’ve been better to not have known.
Both Juliet and Ruth felt just as guilty as their mother. They felt responsible for what had happened. If only they had paid more attention to their little sister this would have been avoided.
Juliet leaned on Osvaldo for morale support and he held her tightly as she wept on his shoulder. Despite the twins being young when Elisabeth had disappeared they knew the damage it had done. They remember the times they would run around the front of the house trying to catch butterflies. The happier times.
Ruth was grateful that Miss Munch sent Julian with them. She said that she didn’t felt an awful feeling whenever she saw Jefferson. She would’ve sent Wolfgang as well but he was busy setting up shop with his older brother. Julian, though he didn’t know Elisabeth all that well, felt the sadness Ruth was feeling. He hated seeing her cry and not knowing how to make her sadness go away. The best he could do for now was hold her until her tears dried.

Content warning: This post contains mentioning of sickness.
Consuelo was the one to open the door and she was hesitant to let the man in. Though as soon as he mentioned Elisabeth’s name she had gone completely still. It had been more than 4 years and she had lost all hope in finding her daughter. What could this man even know? He sure didn’t look like someone from Windenburg.
She rounded up the whole family into the dining room. They all trickled in one by one until Edward was the last one to sit down.
Jefferson took a deep breath before he spoke.
Jefferson: I apologize for coming here unannounced but I did not have an address to write to you. My name is Jefferson Roswell and I’ve come from Strangerville.
The name did not sound familiar at all.
Jefferson: My mother took your daughter, Elisabeth. Not by any ill intention of course. She had been...in a state of confusion due to her age. She often forgot things, people. She sometimes had forgotten she even had a son... She came to visit the market place and mistook your daughter as one of our late maid’s daughter.
Jefferson watched every face in the room. The way they changed from relief and then to anger.
Edward: You could have brought her back! If you knew she wasn’t your maid’s daughter. Where is she? Where is Elisabeth?!
Jefferson flinched at Edward’s loud protest and at Elisabeth’s name.
Consuelo: Did you come here to let us know that she’s working for your mother now?
Jefferson’s face soften at Consuelo’s soft voice. How he wished that was the reason for his visit.
Jefferson: I’m afraid not. Elisabeth never worked for my mother she was very well taken care of because my mother adored her. She loved Elisabeth like her own flesh and blood.
Consuelo: Then she would have brought her back if she cared for her so much. Is your mother so shameful to not even show her face to the woman who cried herself to sleep countless of nights because her daughter was swiped away by someone so selfish and heartless!
Juliet: Mama please calm down. We don’t want you to faint again.
Edward: If you don’t tell us where she is I will throw you out this house this instance. Wasting our time by going in circles and not giving us any answers.
Edward began to get up from his seat and Ruth stopped him.
Ruth: Papa!
Jefferson: Elisabeth became very sick last month. The doctors said she may only have a few weeks. She isn’t able to travel and has asked for you to come to her instead. We’ll leave tomorrow morning.
