It was the twin’s 14th birthday and the rest of the Armstrong family tried to have lively spirits for the occasion. Most of them have lost hope that Elisabeth would ever return. Almost four months have passed since then.

After three pregnancy finally came the babies they have hoped for. Two healthy baby boys. They could be almost identical, the only thing that differentiated them was there eyes.
Osvaldo had the same striking blue eyes as his father. Edward II had the same warm brown eyes as his mother and was born an hour after his brother. They were born in the year 1895.

Consuelo was battling the weeds that were surrounding her carrots and Juliet was busy battling her imaginary friends before her birthday. She has now aged up into a child!

Mila came over to the Armstrong house and was mumbling curse words in an unknown language to Consuelo. She figured it was German. When they locked eyes her eyes softened with a hint of sadness. Though that quickly changed.
“Consuelo how can you not see it? He’s been stalling in going to ask Pablo for a job. Any sensible man would take the opportunity considering-”
“He’s on his way there,” Consuelo cut her off, “You have to take into account that this isn’t something he’s comfortable with.”
This irritated Mila even more because to her it seemed like she was covering for Edward. “If he cared about his family he can put his pride aside,” she pointed out.
“I think it’s best if you leave Mila,” Consuelo said in a more serious tone.
“I just want what’s best for you dear. I’m sorry if I was harsh,” Mila said as she left The Armstrong house.

Dearest Mama,
Giving birth to my sweet Juliet was the easiest compared to Ruth. I was no longer alone even if Edward had to step out. He nearly fainted and almost hit his head on the door!
You should see Ruth’s face when Juliet was born. I have never seen a child glow the way she did! Oh how I miss you and papa terribly. Not I day goes by when I don’t miss you.
Love,
Consuelo (stamped 1891)

After a few drinks and Misty’s shift ending they went out for a walk in the gardens nearby to sober Edward up before he returned home. They talked for what seem like hours. Mostly about what Consuelo told him. It was promising but it would mean less time with Misty. For some reason he just didn’t want to give that up.
“I believe you’re all sobered up Eddie. It is getting late what will the people think?” she asked with a raised eyebrow.
“I guess we shall depart. I’ll see you again next week m’lady,” he said kissing her hands.
Misty was taken by surprise and she tried biting away a smile that was beginning to form on her lips. He’s a married man. He’s a married man.
Edward came back home to see Consuelo sleeping peacefully in their bed. He couldn’t help the blush that was creeping on his cheeks as he went under the covers still feeling Misty hands on his lips.

Consuelo decided to pay Mila a visit. It has been a while since they sat down for cup of coffee.
“I do hope it’s no trouble that brought Ruth along,” Consuelo said timidly.
She was still in awe by Mila’s house which she inherited from her late husband who died of an unknown illness. She wondered if her house would ever look like this one day.
“Nonsense! That is why I have nannies dear especially with two boys wrecking the house. Maybe they’ll tire each other out before we finish our coffee,” she said nonchalantly.
They chatted quite a bit as they finished their coffee. Sure enough all three children were sound asleep in the bench nearby.
“By the way how is your husband’s business going?” she asked.
“He makes enough to put food on our table. He does come home terribly late and hardly spends time with poor Ruth,” Consuelo said a bit saddened.
Mila drummed her fingers for a moment before she smiled, “I know just the thing I’ll put a good word in with my husband’s friend. Pablo I believe his name was.”
“Mila how could I ever repay you for your kindness?” Consuelo asked. She has never met someone with such a kind heart.
“I can’t be certain how well the pay will be but it will be a stable salary and he’ll be home by dinner that’s for certain. I found it rather odd Gunther sees him leave the town square before 5 which should leave plenty of time to come home early,” she said a bit skeptical.
Consuelo didn’t know this at all. She always assumed he stayed out past 6 which would explain why he comes home late. “He does go to a small pub from time to time. I believe he takes the long way home so the smell doesn’t latch onto his clothes so often,” Consuelo said with a small smile.

Two months have passed since Consuelo and Edward started a new life in Windenburg. Things are looking up for the couple that is until Consuelo began feeling ill.
She wondered if she picked the wrong kind of vegetable from yesterday’s stew but it has been nearly a month since she last stained her sheets. Soon enough she felt and saw the small bump that was forming.
“This is terrible, terrible news. What am I going to tell Edward?” Consuelo thought.

Consuelo is still mourning the disappearance of Elisabeth which has caused her to neglect the house and children. Juliet has taken it upon herself to step in the role she has always disliked. She has left school is currently helping her mother with the chores of the house.

3/3
It was late at night when Ruth and Juliet reached their home. Ruth couldn’t bare to break the news to their mother. How could she be so irresponsible?
“This is all my fault Juliet. My fault and not yours.”
“Why are you home at this hour? You had us worried sick,” Edward yelled at them. They flinched at his tone and Ruth began to toy with the sides of her dress to keep herself from crying.
Before Ruth could say anything Consuelo spoke, “Where is Elisabeth?”
“She was with us for most of our time at the market but we, no I, took my eyes off her for just a second,” Ruth said but she couldn’t help but choke out the last words.
“I don’t know where Elisabeth has gone.”
It all happened in slow motion as Consuelo fell to the ground and Edward barely managed to catch her in his arms. The room was filled with tears until the sun came up.

The Armstrongs can finally afford to have a portrait taken of them as a whole family. (I took a full paychecks worth it seemed only fair)

Osvaldo isn’t the only one who gives Ruth a hard time. Edward enjoyed putting on a show for his mother. Whenever Ruth lectured him for running around the house with his outdoor shoes he would run to his mom and cry.
Consuelo of course babied him and gives him warm milk to make him feel better. This irritates Ruth but she doesn’t say anything.

Dear Mama,
Our lives have become so hectic that it completely slipped my mind to let you know I’ve given birth to yet another beautiful baby girl. Her name is Elisabeth and she’ll be turning 1 soon this upcoming winter. We’re trying for another baby. Even if my dear Edward doesn’t say anything I’m certain he’s desperate for boy as am I.
Give papa a big hug for me. Miss you.
With love,
Consuelo (stamped 1895)

I wanted to include the Spanish translation this time around. After all Consuelo would’ve written and spoken to her parents in Spanish only! She is Mexican so her Spanish differs from the Spanish spoken in Spain.

Ruth Armstrong was born in the hot summer of 1890. The first child of Consuelo and Edward. It was a long birthing process and she had to endure it alone without her dear mama by her side like she had once dreamed of.
Despite suffering alone she felt as if though it was worth it. As soon as her daughter looked up at her with a smile all the pain and fear washed away. She felt her heart leap with joy, finally she had her baby in her arms.
