Photo
Visiting the Templo Mayor was quite the experience. It’s fascinating to visit a live archeological dig in the middle of a city, but I really respect how they have set up this experience to see how the destruction of this Aztec temple was directly used to build up the main cathedral and other important buildings by the Spanish conquistadores and the subsequent colonizers.
Highly recommend going here--you’ll have to check your bag if you have a water bottle on you, but it’s totally worth it and it’s not an expensive museum experience.

- Volver a DF. Antología.
Nueve remembranzas de otros tantos autores acerca de la Ciudad de México en los tiempos en que era el Distrito Federal —mucho más concretamente, el Centro Histórico, lugar de leyendas y de cruda realidad. De excesos y de sutilezas. Acompañados de cinco ilustraciones inspiradas por las remembranzas.
Aunque todas las piezas tienen su interés, en éste caso destacan más como parte de un conjunto que como ensayos individuales, pues entre todos forman un fresco a primera vista tremendo pero a segunda vista más bien cariñoso del tema. Todos los autores reunidos hablan con suma desfachatez y en más de una ocasión encuentran la belleza en todo lo sórdido y cochambroso.
Aunque no todos lo dicen, las piezas parecen situarse en los 90, la última década del siglo XX y el principio de la revista y editorial Moho —de hecho la última pieza nos cuenta un poco de sus orígenes. Que éste libro apareciera en el 2019 es un gesto aposta: Más que a la nostalgia le apunta a demostrar qué poco han cambiado algunas cosas, bien que mal o mal que bien.
Como mucho del catálogo de Moho, una obra contestataria, más o menos contracultura y en el fondo sumamente simpática, tierna inclusive. Vale bastante la pena.

En el Viejo Oeste, hubo varios vaqueros temibles que se ganaron su reputación. Uno de ellos fue Billy the Kid, conocido por su habilidad con las armas y su naturaleza despiadada. Otro vaquero temible fue Jesse James, líder de la banda de forajidos James-Younger, que aterrorizó a los pueblos y asaltó trenes. También se destaca el vaquero John Wesley Hardin, conocido por su destreza en el duelo y su participación en numerosos tiroteos. Estos vaqueros dejaron una huella duradera en la historia del Oeste y se les recuerda como figuras legendarias de la época.

When we were planning our trip, we were debating on extending our stay into the weekend and I’m so glad we did, because it meant that M was able to see more of the city outside of the walk between our hotel and the hotel where the event he was going to was held.
That said, our first free day was kind of a mixed bag--while lunch at El Kioskito was great, M was not as big a fan of Centro Historico, mainly because it was really loud between the organ grinders and the various stores that decided that it was totally normal and cool to blare their music at full blast. I was on a mission to go to Cantina La Mascota, and I promised him that it would be a chill rest of the day once we went there.
The problem, though, was that there were two Cantinas La Mascotas within about 20 minutes of each other, and the first one we went to was not the right one. It was quiet, though, so we got our bearings, I got mad at my cell phone for not having any service, and we figured out where we needed to go to get to the right location. That was the walk in which our senses were blasted, and then the cantina itself had a massive, loud jukebox that was also jarring…but eventually that stopped and the giant margarita finally helped.
M wanted to order the Cuban torta, thinking it would be a nice, small sandwich that would work as a snack. Instead, it was this monstrosity with fried eggs, hot dogs, various deli meats, some sort of scrapple, and some lettuce and tomato that felt like a troll more than anything else. We tried to eat some of it, but there was no way either of us would be able to finish it.
