Researchers in Mexico City have opened a series of boxes containing Aztec treasures, including the remains of sacrificed children and exotic animals. Have they found the legendary lost tomb of King Ahuitzotl?

Visiting the Templo Mayor was quite the experience. It’s fascinating to visit a live archeological dig in the middle of a city, but I really respect how they have set up this experience to see how the destruction of this Aztec temple was directly used to build up the main cathedral and other important buildings by the Spanish conquistadores and the subsequent colonizers.
Highly recommend going here--you’ll have to check your bag if you have a water bottle on you, but it’s totally worth it and it’s not an expensive museum experience.

Templo Mayor

Seder, Pyramids, Baseball and Friends: A Perfect Weekend
What’s Pesach without a seder? How would I know why this night is different from all other nights of the year? We decided to invite our friends over since they are interested in Judaism (one of them is technically Jewish, but was not brought up religious), so we trudged (and by trudged I mean Ubered) over to Polanco, where there are Jews and kosher supermarkets. The selection was surprisingly…

La gran micro-restauració🛕The great micro-restauration🛕La gran micro-restauración

Aztec Turquoise Shield
An Aztec (Mexica) shield of wood covered in turquoise and shell mosaic. Likely used only as a ceremonial shield. The design shows solar disks and a long, winding snake crisscrossing the shield horizontally. The shield was dedicated to the rain god Tlaloc and buried beneath the Templo Mayor at Tenochtitlan. 1400-1521, Mexico. (British Museum, London)

Skull
Aztec, Late Postclassic, 1200-1520 CE
The subject of this small sculpture is death, which was a rather lively part of Aztec culture. Skeletons and death transformations were important themes in sculpture: consider the skull racks where the remains of sacrificial victims were curated in Tenochtitlan’s Templo Mayor precinct, or the great goddess Coatlicue, decapitated and with snakes emerging from her severed neck.

Thinking about Coatlicue, Aztec goddess of life, death, rebirth, and the earth
Tonāntzin (our mother)
who was so terrifying that when she was rediscovered under the Templo Mayor, the white elite had to bury her again, not only to hide her terrifying image but also hide her from her indigenous followers who remembered her and loved her went to great lengths to still worship her.
Tēteoh īnnān (mother of the gods)
Mother of the Sun, Moon, and Stars, who became pregnant when she touched a ball of feathers that fell from above and then gave birth to Huitzilopochtli, the God of War and Sacrifice.
Coatlalopeuh, on who's hill the dark Virgen de Guadalupe appeared to Juan Diego and, in Nahuatl, the language of the Aztec, told him "Am I not here, I who am your mother?" Our Nuestra Virgen who appeared, not as the new mother of God but as the Woman Clothed with the Sun at the end of world to remind us that, even if the world as we knew it ended, we have will survive and continue
Tonāntzin Coatlicue
