Okay I’m wondering how I missed a day of adventure - May 18, 2023. We hiked from our apartment in Taormina up to Castelmola with even more spectacular vistas. BTW wooden guardrails when you’re on a slippery stone path, high up a hill with orchards of cacti below you, are just so overrated.
We enjoyed a wonderful apricot almond cake and espresso on a roof top terrazze then walked numerous steps down to the three gates of the town Centro and then found the grocery store. Highlight was being coerced into buying a metre long thin Sicilian zucchini - little drier and more squash like for €1.50. Tried a reasonably priced bottle of Sicilian white wine but decided it wasn’t worth the upgrade from yesterday’s tetrapak on the train. Here’s a quick rundown in photos.
So today is May 20, a travel day and it’s drizzling and very grey. We’re off to Siracusa by train and hoping to find another break in the weather.
Well, it appears we managed to outrun the rain but not the wind. Wondering why the ocean is so angry and where the sun is hiding. Photos to follow tomorrow.

Castelmola is a small medieval village in Sicily, which is part of the prestigious club “I Borghi più Belli d’Italia” (the most beautiful italian villages). The historic center of this village is very suggestive, thanks to its perfectly preserved medieval urban layout, made up of picturesque narrow streets, small squares and ancient churches. I suggest to spend a few hours there, maybe also make a stop for a breakfast or a lunch at Bar Turrisi, a truly unique place, reviewed by "Focus" as one of the seven most particular bars in the world.

Tag 19: Auszeit am Meer

Also meine erste Nacht in Taormina war… nicht sehr erholsam. Das knatterige Holzbett ist etwas kurz geraten, so bin ich während jeder Bewegung gegen die Abschlussbretter geknallt. Dadurch ist mir übrigens auch mitten in der Nacht das Handy auf den Kopf gefallen, welches ich aufs Holztablar über mir gelegt hatte. Autsch!
So bin ich früh wach und versuche mit etwas Bewegung doch noch in den Tag zu kommen. Über 300 Stufen sind es bis zur "Chiesa Madonna della Rocca", doch ich kämpfe mich durch. Schon bald spüre ich die ersten Sonnenstrahlen auf meinem Rücken; den Sonnenaufgang habe ich damit wohl verpasst. Oben angekommen, geniesse ich trotz allem eine tolle Aussicht - auf Taormina, ins Nachbardorf Castelmola und natürlich übers Meer!
Ich geniesse die morgendliche Ruhe und nutze die Chance, mir die mittelalterliche Altstadt anzusehen. Schnell stelle ich fest: Hier reiht sich Boutique an Boutique. So quasi das St. Moritz Italiens. Zwischendurch finde ich einige Gemäuer, welche das Ganze etwas auflockern.
Die Stadt ist grosszügig begrünt, wobei man den Palmen den heissen Sommer schon ansehen kann. Wie ein Baum im Oktober noch blühen kann, ist mir hingegen selbst in Sizilien ein Rätsel.
Die Luxusstrasse Corso Umberto führt mich weiter bis zur "Piazza IX Aprile". Eine Aussichtsplattform mit weitläufigem Blick übers Meer & auf den naheliegenden Ätna.
Taormina ist wirklich klein, die Altstadt habe ich schnell gesehen. So zieht es mich hinunter in Richtung Meer, wo es bestimmt noch mehr zu entdecken gibt. Auf dem Weg dorthin durchquere ich bald den Stadtpark "Villa Comunale", ein englischer Garten par excellence! Mittendrin: Die "Victorian Follies".
Bizarre, aber äusserst prächtige Bauwerke aus Stein und Holz, denen ich beim besten Willen keinen Baustil zuordnen kann. Nichts desto trotz gefallen sie mir extrem und für einen Moment fühle ich mich in eine orientalische Fantasy-Welt entführt. Erbaut wurden die Gebäude im 19. Jahrhundert durch die Ornithologin Miss Trevelyan, die von hier aus Vögel beobachten wollte.
Doch so viele Vögel wie heute hat sie damals wohl nie beobachten können; Taormina platzt vor Touristen! Das merke ich spätestens dann, als ich mich der "Isola Bella" nähere. Zwischen zwei Buchten gelegen, ist sie auf dem Weg nach unten bereits gut zu erkennen.
Es müssen hunderte sein, welche die kleine Insel über den schmalen Sandstreifen heute erreichen möchten. Drüben angekommen, soll man für den Einlass dann auch noch 4 Euro hinblättern. Sorry, aber jeder der da mitmacht, hat aber wirklich einen Vogel.
Schnell verlasse ich den Bereich wieder und folge der Küste noch vor dem Mittag weiter in Richtung Norden. Mein Ziel: Den (zum Glück) etwas abgelegenen Strand "Spiaggia di Mazzeo". Gehsteige sucht man in der Gegend leider vergebens, ich muss ständig auf der viel befahrenen Hauptstrasse umherlaufen. So bin ich gleich mehr als froh, wenn ich diese endlich verlassen darf.
Da ich deshalb dann leider doch eine Abzweigung zu früh nehme, muss ich bis zum Strand einen ganzen Abschnitt voller schroffen Felsen überqueren. Und genau dort mache ich eine absolut spektakuläre Entdeckung!
