Giving Back
October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month in the USA. I recently lost a friend to this horrible disease and even though I hadn’t seen her in over 3 years, I still felt the loss. She was in and out of remission before it finally got to the point they could no longer do anything for her. So I am grateful for all the organizations in RL and in world that raise funds for this…

The Move No One Told Me About
Canowindra to Kiama 1970 It wasn’t until my father turned south instead of west that I knew. I wasn’t going home to Canowindra. He said we were going to Wollongong. I didn’t know what he was talking about. Nor would I ask. I knew better than that. I’d been picked up by my father from my Aunty Pat’s place in Bondi. I’d spent several days maybe a week or even two staying there. I’d met my cousin…

So, I was interested in this lady, let’s call her Jenny who was part of a Christian fundamentalist cult in Canowindra NSW. I used to go there every opportunity that I could get. mainly just to see her.
The cult members lived in a large building in the middle of a compound. This building was divided between male and female residents. This building was surrounded by other buildings where the cult leaders lived, similar layout to Koresh's Waco Compound.
A normal day consisted of the "students," getting up at 5.00 am for prayer, followed by breakfast. They would then be sent to one of the local farms in the area where they would work until late afternoon. These students wouldn't be paid, the money that they earnt would be sent to the Cornerstone cult leaders of the group. All the students would be allowed to live on was there Centrelink payment.
Their afternoons would consist of attending Bible study lectures until dinner. After dinner more prayer time then bed. They would then have to go to bed early, then get up at 5.00am where the same cycle would begin again.
So, back to the story. On leaving one day, I gave my phone number to one of the other female residents of the group to pass onto Jenny.  Anyway, on returning one day. I was approached by the leader he said to me, "you gave your phone number to so and so, to give to Jenny." I was informed by the leader that "Jenny is here because she has committed her life to Jesus and that she can’t be distracted by any guy," and that it was "against Cornerstone rules to give any written messages to the residents." And that I and her, along with the leaders need to have a meeting.
So, I agreed to this meeting in the leader’s house. Before I went into the house, I was asked to remove my shoes, and as I was taking off my shoes, I was told by the leader, "that I can't talk to her anymore." I said okay, and replied, "did you want that in writing?" The leader got angry with that snappy retort. Well, that was the end of that, I left and never went back.
Heard later that this group had also been previously forced out of Broken Hill because of their strange practices. A lot of the "students" in this group had also suffered from accidents whist working on the farms due to be excessively tired. The leadership of this group was also made up of a lot of ex Exclusive Brethren. There is a large group of Exclusive Brethren in the Central West of NSW. They are a very legalistic group; they believe that they are the only Protestant Christian church group going to heaven.

Mandageria

Vintage Report: Cowra / Canowindra NSW
The region experienced a good vintage in 2021, with the star performers for the region including Chardonnay, Semillon, Shiraz and Merlot.
“It was a wetter than average growing season for 2021,” explained Windowrie vigneron Jason O’Dea. “This was more than welcome after a number of years of drought across NSW.”
Harvest commenced within the usual timeframe, around the second week of February.  The rain caused a few fungal issues along with some hail; however, these issues were managed well across the region.
Tumblr media
A couple of rain events during vintage caused some delays with picking. Any disease was quickly brought under control with judicious vineyard management.
“The organic growers had larger than average yields,” continue Jason. “This was most likely due to larger bunch weights brought on by the summer rains.”
There was 100mm of rain in the second half of March which created a few issues for some growers with later ripening varieties, however most of the fruit had been harvested at this stage.
“The 2021 vintage was fast and furious with few delays between varieties effectively condensing the vintage intake.
“It was great to see good quality fruit being harvested, with the cooler and wetter season helping build flavour, resulting in average to above average yields reported across the region. “

Back in 2012. If you’ve never been to the Canowindra (pronounced ca-NOUN-dra) Balloon glow and you live somewhere near Sydney, you should make the effort. An amazing spectacle and great country fun.

We had one of the best rides yesterday as we made up some time to get back on schedule. On our way to #Orange we came through a very cute and vibrant town. As we were heading out of town we stumbled across the #Canowindra International #HotAirBalloon #Challenge which is apparently an annual event. #metalmaidenphotography #rokchic #666metalmaiden #motolife #freespirit #motosocial #instamoto #womenwhoride (at Canowindra, New South Wales) https://www.instagram.com/p/BwiD6_UFe_E/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1bcil99yo4u4p

Awesome to see my image on the front page of the AgJournal. Liz and the team were great to work with and it was fascinating to hear about the techniques for farming in the drought. You can find a copy in The Weekly Times, The Weekend Australian, Herald Sun, The Daily Telegraph, The Sunday Mail, The Advertiser or The Sunday Times. #agjournal #davidromaphotography #media #published #canowindra #drought #farming https://www.instagram.com/p/B5XAWAQFB2m/?igshid=ogcfhyp6lnnm
