I know Angela and Aaron are often considered as the captain of the Chenford Ship (and for good reasons)… But in some ways, I feel this title should go to Grey : he's the one who made this ship possible. Who had a hand in getting Tim and Lucy together. Because Lucy almost wasn't assigned to Tim... if Commander West had had his way. Instead, Grey ignored him. He saw how these two could learn from one another right from the start. And he was correct in his assessment. Which is also why his first suggestion for an aide was Lucy. He couldn't have foreseen how their relationship would evolve, of course. But their initial partnership is what made Chenford who they are. It's what gave their relationship a solid foundation.

And when these two idiots were being… well idiots, Grey was still the driving force that shook things up and ended the status quo. He made them ride together again when honestly, Tim could have managed a day without an aide. But this situation forced them to face their awkwardness and to face their feelings. And when Tim and Lucy were both hiding their relationship, Grey was again the one who paired them together which gave them the necessary push to disclose their relationship. Because, let's be real, Nyla and Angela didn't need Aaron for the stakeout that day. As it is, he barely had anything to do.

And in a way, that's probably why Grey's influence is easy to forget : he never said anything directly. But he had to suspect. He saw Tim's desperation when they found Lucy. Just like he saw Lucy's looks at Angela's wedding. When Tim turned down his offer, he knew it was for Lucy. He barely blinked an eye when he found himself roped into their shenanigans and just agreed to play the umpire. And he had to have read the report when they found Chris - Angela may not have been the only one curious as to what Tim was doing in Lucy's apartment… But, suspicious or not, the fact is he never called them out and it just shows how much faith he had in them. Because, as their supervisor, his leadership could have been questioned if something had gone wrong. Especially if he had an inkling and didn't act. Instead, he trusted them and gave them the time and space to figure things out. The only time he came close to intervene, was after their first date. But even then, he never asked directly for an explanation or anything. He simply tried to warn them of the potential consequences by using Aaron and Celina as a cover. I have no doubt that he was suspicious of what was going on by that point - he basically admitted it - but he also didn't want to force them to disclose their relationship until they were ready to do so.

And even now, he still shows how he has a high regard for them. He let them work together. He assigned Tim as Lucy's case officer for her latest undercover op despite the potential conflict of interest. He was even keeping an eye on Tim when he was getting uncomfortable with the direction of the conversation when they all met Lucy for a sitrep. And God knows how long he had to wait for Tim to come back from his meeting with Lucy in the laundry room...

would you want to do a fluffy chenford pre-canon fic where after breaking up w/ Chris and Ashley, they just sort of fall into acting like they are together like being touchy, flirty, going out, and possessive of eo when strangers try to make a move on them but in reality they haven't talk about it and don't have a label just yet and then Angela just snaps one day and make them admit they are together so that kinda prompt them to finally confront eo 🙈

After Tim and Lucy finally decide to start dating, they implement the "bases" rule in an effort to slow things down and start their relationship off right by showing some restraint. But little by little, after each date, their restraint slips further and further away until it no longer exists.

*This is written in a pre 5x08/canon chenford world- it's pretty much just pure smut haha, and a continuation of my series Rounding the Bases on Ao3.

1. Which of your fics would you keep the basic plot of but rewrite completely? Um, probably my Linstead multi-chapter (I think you're familiar hahahaha), mostly because I had no plan in place and it became a total mess. So I guess I would rewrite it by... not writing it at all? Oh! But seriously I kind of wish I could go back and re-write this one. It was my first foray into writing for Chenford, and I've been thinking about a bunch lately for some reason (I think because it's vaguely related to another idea I have). I wish I'd kept it entirely canon compliant.

3. How would you describe your writing style? Lately? Nonexistent.

4. Do you have any OCs? Do you have a story for them? Original characters are TERRIFYING to me. There's a reason I write fanfic and not original fiction, coming up with characters (especially well-rounded, relatable ones that people like) feels impossible. So I just... don't. (To the point that I researched the names of every single referenced member of Metro so I could use actual character names and not make any up. I have the list if anyone's interested 😜)

5. What's a tag you never want to use for your works even when it applies? I find this question confusing. I never want to use MCD, but it shouldn't ever apply since I have no intention to write it. What a cop out of an answer, but I don't understanddddd. OH! I sometimes wish I could exclude relevant tags for the surprise factor.

6. What's your ratio for rating your works? What does this mean? Oh wait, I think it means in terms of T vs M vs E? Sex brings it to M, and porn is E?

7. Your favourite ao3 tag. Lately? Established relationship or missing moment.

8. How slow is a slow burn? So slow that they spend most of the story dancing around their feelings and only get together near the very end.

12. If you write in more than one language, what's the difference? Strictly English over here.

13. Rate your worldbuilding skills from 1 to 10. Uh... 1 or 2? Because I don't build worlds, I play in existing ones created by the show?

16. Are one-shots really underrated? Wait are they underrated??? WHY?? I LOVE a one-shot. Whether it's 500, 2000, or 10K words, I love being able to sit down and enjoy and fully fleshed out story from start to finish.

17. Past or present tense? Why? I used to write in past tense, but I think reading more present tense influenced me to do the same, and now I prefer present.

19. Share a snippet from a wip without giving any context for it.

“No!” she practically shouts at him. She takes a moment to school herself, exhaling slowly. “I mean, Tim, I say this with love, but if you don’t give me some fucking space, I will kill you.”

20. Do you work on a single project or many at the same time? How does that work for you? Many. Though it usually bites me in the ass because I end up stuck on something, and then something else, etc. So clearly it doesn't work all that well. But I think (unless I was on a total roll, which sometimes happens) I'd be stifled if I focused on only one thing. Plus ideas tend to multiply.

21. Can you accurately predict how long your fics are going to be? If you can, what's your secret? No, not really. I don't typically write anything super long though.

22. What is it about watching the same two idiots falling in love over and over again? I DON'T KNOW BUT I LOVE MY IDIOTS!!!!

24. Thoughts on flashbacks/flashforwards. Not really a fan, especially if they're super long. A couple of lines here or there are a-okay with me, but when you're italicizing half a chapter? Pass.

25. Is writing the whole thing beforehand better or worse than writing it as you go? As in, with a multi-chapter? I clearly suck at that, so I think I'd only ever do another if I wrote the whole thing in advance (or at least had a VERY clear plan in place)

27. Do you agree that one shouldn't start a story with a piece of dialogue? Nope, strongly disagree. Sometimes it just works to jump right in without preamble.

28. Any writing advice that works for you and you feel like sharing? Not really, but I'll take any advice you want to throw at me, because I am soooooo stuck.

30. Describe a fic that almost happened, but then it didn't. Well right now, every single one. Because I CAN'T WRITE 😩. Oh, but my Contractor Jay fic counts I guess? *Sigh* 10K words of nothing. IT HAUNTS ME

32. Do you have a word/expression that you always use in your writing? Fuck. And murmur. I looooove murmur, it's my favourite.

33. Give your writing a compliment. 😩 I... can... idk dude, I can't right now. How do you compliment something that doesn't exist?!?!?!? I'm going with my fallback -- I'm decent(ish) with words themselves, but ideas are my struggle.

34. Do you write to improve? Or is that not a concern for you? Do I sound like an ass if I say no? 😬 I write as a creative outlet, that's all.

35. Thoughts on writing challenges/contests. Contests, no thanks, I don't like the idea of pitting writers against each other (assuming that's what that means???). I'm all about celebrating other writers. Challenges, like #chenfordweek? YES, I wrote more that week that I had in ages, I apparently do well when there's a fire under my ass.

36. How do you come up with fic titles? What's the one you're most proud of? I ask you? 😅 And when I try by myself, I follow your lead of Taylor Swift lyrics. Fave of the ones I've managed to do on my own? I like this one best I think?

38. "This never happened" fix-it fics or "this happened but" fix-it fics?

As long as you fix it, I'm happy! (Yes Suz, I mean you specifically here)

39. Wildest AU scenario you have written? I've only written one, so I guess that's it -- paging Dr. Jay Halstead. I don't think any of the AU ideas I've played around with are particularly wild.

40. Write a 9-word fic. What the fuck is this question?!!? Tim Bradford loves Lucy Chen forever and ever. Amen. Nine words does not a fic make.

Written for day one of Chenford Week: inspired by canon. I am already behind, because life is chaos. But I plan on catching up as soon as I am on holiday!

Rating: T

He can still sense the laundry room when he finally dumps his bag on the kitchen counter: the scent of detergent and metal on his clothes; the stickiness of chemicals gritting his palms and the taste of Lucy still on his lips. Somewhere in the house, Kojo is asleep- full and work out by the dog sitter he pays to check in twice a day- and so Tim braces his hands on the edge of the countertops and focuses on the rough grain of the marble. The texture grounds him, gives his brain something to focus on beyond the knowledge that Lucy is still in the midst of an op. That he hasn’t been able to bring her home.

His house has the familiar, but not welcome, silence that reminds him of being married to Isabel. He has gotten used to the sound of Lucy’s pencil scratching against notepaper as she studies for a detective exam that she might not be able to take; the slurp of her tea as she drinks her fourth cup of a herbal blend of the evening. She taps her feet against the breakfast bar when she’s deep in concentration, completely subconsciously, and he will never point it out to her in case she stops. But her very presence in his life has become a quiet orchestra- unconducted, understated, but still gently becoming the soundtrack of a contented life. Briefly, he considers packing up Kojo and taking him with him to Lucy’s apartment, feigning concern for Tamara just to have the presence of someone busy around him, but she text him earlier to say that she would be staying with a friend and he could stop worrying about her too.

Instead, he tries to settle on the couch, he’s pretty sure there’s a game recorded, but without a beer the whole thing feels incomplete. And he can’t have a beer, not if there’s the slightest chance that she will need him tonight. Lucy is good, better than Isabel was at this point in her career, but he can’t get the look she gave him out of his mind. That wide-eyed pleading as she pulled him back from the door. Not desperate, Lucy is never desperate, but unsure.

Tomorrow he will think to worry about the ramifications of pushing their clothes aside as much as necessary and clinging to one another on top of the laundry machine. He didn’t have a condom on him- why would he?- and he’s hoping that she thought to take her birth control with her when she packed for the op. It’s definitely the kind of consideration that the two of them should be better at, but the problem had seemed far off when he was rolling his hips against hers, his palm pressed against her mouth and his teeth nipping against the crook of her neck.

A steady click breaks his thoughts- the rhythmic patter of Kojo’s claws on the kitchen floor as he searches for him.

“Here, boy,” Tim whispers quietly when he rounds the corner, full of sleepy excitement. Tim is convinced that Kojo is disappointed every time he comes home without Lucy- he is quick to agree with the sentiment- but he rallies quickly and bounds over to join him in the couch. Something he has not been allowed to do while Lucy is present until recently- Tim unwilling to let on that he isn’t as stern a dog owner as he likes to make out. Nowadays, they huddle up together when the three of them are at his house and now the two of them act as if Lucy is in her regular spot- the cushion still plumped and waiting for her.
