002 Camilla!

Always happy to write for the prettiest purple princess!

Surprising no one, though, this is post is a little long. Maybe not as long as some of the other ones I’ve done, though!

How I feel about this character:

I don’t care what anyone says, I love Camilla. I don’t deny that there are problems with her character re:sexism, but I think at the very least, she is still afforded the capacity to be interesting in personality in other ways.

I think one of the things I like most about Camilla is how she’s sweet, but also… kind of not. She’s pretty disturbed, and rather than that just being an “uWu yandere girlfriend” kind of thing, it stems from trauma that makes her much more complex. Is she motherly and warm? Sure, but that’s to a point. On the flip side, she is possessive, selfish, and violent. If you get in her way, she’s incredibly condescending at best and straight up murderous at worst. Even when she’s terrified or horribly upset, she always keeps even a small air of confidence about her, not willing to show her opposition even an ounce of fear. She’ll kill you for separating her from her loved ones and kill you for leaving her just the same, and she doesn’t really care about what happens to Nohr as its princess — just the people she knows and loves. All Camilla wants is to have a happy life of her own, and after what she’s been through she certainly deserves it, but she definitely… has a very destructive mindset.

Yet underneath all of this, you do see also a very natural side of her. Not in the mothering, and beyond the violence as well… You definitely see a lot of someone who has a lot more going for her. She’s clearly exhausted by a lot of what she’s been through, but she still gets up every day ready to do what she can. In spite of her emotional struggles she tries to find confidence in herself, be thoughtful, and find causes for joy and laughter. She’s not a perfect woman by any means, but you can still see that there is a part of her that is trying to be someone better. I sincerely hope that in a future for her character, she’d be living a quite life surrounded by love, security, and a role that truly makes her happy.

All the people I ship romantically with this character:

You know, for a lot of characters, I’m usually pretty flexible on what I ship… So long as the environment is positive, I’ll have a few lined up, but with an obvious favourite. This time around, I honestly don’t have much for Camilla. In my first Conquest playthrough, I went for her and Keaton because I heard that she made for a cute mom for Velouria. And in Revelation, I married her to Takumi because I couldn’t pair her off with the one person I wanted to…

And that brings me to the one person I do ship romantically with this character: Hinoka. Believe it or not, I didn’t used to be crazy about them, because it’s an enemies to lovers and I am very, very picky about enemies to lovers — to me, they must inherently be a slowburn for it to work. But for whatever reason, over time I just ended up warming up to these two. I can’t say exactly how or why, but it’s just something that happened.

Camilla is clearly interested in Hinoka despite knowing that they’re supposed to be opposed, and Hinoka ends up being really flustered by her because she’s not at all accustomed to the attention. And while there is a little charm in that to me, I think what I like most when I think about them as a couple is the period where they’re beyond that little flirting thing and are just really, truly comfortable with each other. Hinoka comes from a family of people who, while they love each other, aren’t so good at communicating emotions or affection. I feel like Camilla would really help her fill in those gaps, both in giving her love and teaching her how to express it more openly. And on the other end, I feel like Hinoka would be a really stable figure for Camilla. She wouldn’t make promises she couldn’t keep that would trigger Camilla’s abandonment issues, but she’d be always present and willing to communicate. She would never leave Camilla guessing about whether she’s loved or not, and would be there to help take care of her, just as Camilla would for her.

Plus, you know they’d be adamant about looking after each other’s siblings too, which is an important facet of the relationship for both girls.

My non-romantic OTP for this character:

SIIIIIIIIIIIIBLIIIIIIIIIIIIINGS. Seriously. Love her with her siblings. Especially her and Xander, I feel like that’s a really under-explored dynamic, even in the game itself. Their support is mostly about her misunderstanding the kind of person Xander is, so I’d love to see that relationship develop a bit beyond what we get to see and really become something solid. And, being the oldest of the family, I want to see how they came to trust each other after being involved in the Concubine Wars. I think there’s a lot of interesting potential there.

Otherwise… there’s a few, honestly. Obviously, the Hoshido sibs and Azura (she counts under siblings to me, just in case that needed clarifying), that’s a core part of the game. Her friendships with Selena and Beruka are also quite important and deserve attention… I guess if there’s one that I definitely wouldn’t highlight off the top of my head, but love the idea of, it’s Camilla befriending the Ice Tribe twins.

Flora in particular sticks out to me, especially having seen that fanmade support of the game, because I think it could be a really good case of the two of them overcoming first impressions. I can see Camilla thinking of Flora as someone incredibly rigid, cold, and uncaring. She probably wouldn’t like how much she keeps a lot of people at an arm’s distance, and would find her overly proper. Conversely, Flora would hate Camilla, thinking of her as an exemplary Nohrian, violent and selfish and cruel. She can play affectionate as much as she wants, but Flora knows what she’s really like… Yet even with all that, I can see the two of them actually coming to like each other a bit more. Maybe it starts with a compliment on Camilla’s part, about how well she cares for Corrin and even for Felicia — or about how she displays good leadership skills. Then maybe Flora compliments Camilla on something every once in awhile, and then they start to notice each other a bit more. Camilla asks Flora about her knitting, and Flora about Camilla’s embroidery, and then the ball just kind of rolls from there. I really like the idea that they could someday be friends, when life is simpler on both sides.

As for Felicia, well, honestly I just think both girls have such loving natures that they’d match up well. Camilla would love Felicia’s loyalty, her cuteness, and her openness with her emotions. If something was wrong, Felicia wouldn’t hide it, she’d just tell her and want to work on a solution together. As for Felicia, she’d love how openly Camilla gives compliments, feel pretty safe in her presence, and I could honestly see her being happy to share her hobbies with Camilla. You just KNOW Felicia would be filling her in on all of the Ice Tribe fashions.

My unpopular opinion about this character:

I think I might actually prefer her voice as Paula Tiso over Misty Lee in the English dub. And before I get anywhere with that, I just want to say that I in no way, shape, or form dislike Misty Lee’s performance. Quite frankly, she does amazing, and I know she’s what more people pictured when they thought of Camilla’s voice.

For whatever reason, though, I feel like Paula Tiso just works for me. I know the accusation was that she sounds “like a grandma”, but I didn’t really find that to be true to me. What I like about her performance is that she does equal parts loving and motherly, and quite frankly just a little patronizing. Considering Camilla’s attitude in Birthright, Ms. Tiso being able to really harness that condescending tone and make it work is pretty important to the character. Yes, Camilla is warm and motherly, but she’s also possessive and selfish. If you threaten her in any way, she’ll look down on you and treat you like you’re nothing, because you’re something to be eliminated when you threaten those she loves.

And sure, I would accept the argument that you don’t see this quite the same with Misty Lee’s portrayal because there was so much less of that in Warriors and Heroes, but I maintain that it’s something I quite like about Paula Tiso’s interpretation.

One thing I wish would happen/had happened with this character in canon:

That she would get a different outfit…

I think this says something about me, but I would have loved to see Camilla just… go unhinged. She’s a powerful force in her own right, and I’d love to see her just tear through those who are opposing her. The longer this series goes on, the more I’ve felt the need to see a FE woman who just goes completely feral, and I think Camilla deserves to be allowed to do that. Like I know they have the more tropey protectiveness with Camilla and Corrin involved in the anthology comics and what not, but I’d really love to see Camilla just… get some rage for herself, or someone who also hasn’t been able to express their rage.

Like can you imagine if Anankos had used her mother as a puppet? Better yet — put her in front of Leo and Elise’s moms, too. I’d have loved to see her just tear into those nasty women with everything she has, reminding her of every single way they failed their children, and how they deserve nothing more than to rot in the ground like the soulless corpses they are. “Even his control is too good for you,” kind of thing. Just let her really sink her teeth in and be pissed about what they went through. Let her be angry for herself and for her siblings, and help her have this moment of self-forgiveness where she knows that she is worth more than everything she has been put through in her life.

Getting to see anything like that? That would have been just *chef’s kiss*.

My OTP:

Because I only have the one Camilla ship I, uh… pretty much already rambled about it lol.

But maybe I can talk about what my ideal future is for them instead, just so I can add something! I’d say my ideal future for them is probably living in a warm little house situated between Hoshido and Nohr. Camilla has forfeited her title and decided to take up work as a seamstress. Hinoka, on the other hand, has kept hers but works more hands-on “in the field” with the people, so she can communicate to Xander and Ryoma where certain needs still need to be met. The couple visits their siblings fairly regularly — if their siblings don’t come running them, that is — and they are always sure to bring along their band of adopted children. I’ll admit that I’m not sure how many I think they’d have. Camilla would probably want, like, a billion… but Hinoka probably only wants anywhere from one to six, just because that’s what she was raised with. Nonetheless, I can see them taking in children from both countries and making the happiest little family. I can just imagine the dinner Camilla makes every night while Hinoka plays with their kids, telling stories about her time as a pegasus knight. It’s just too darn cute.

My crossover ship:

You know, in retrospect, I’m realizing how funny it is that I chose this particular ask game, because I don’t think I really have any crossover ships. I don’t mind a little overlap between things, but I’ve never been a big crossovers person. I even tend to keep my Fire Emblem games pretty rigidly separate. Every once in awhile, maybe it’s cute to think about how someone would interact with one another, but I usually tend to keep things pretty separate.

So I don’t know if I actually have a Camilla ship that goes across any other games! Lol.

A headcanon fact:

Like most noblewomen in Nohr, Camilla learned to play an instrument. Unlike Elise, who played the violin, she opted for the flute. It was a challenge to play, but she loved the sound. When she was little, she used to play for Garon, and he would delight in listening to her songs. She has several memories of playing for him, and him prancing around like a big goofball to the point where she struggled to keep playing without bursting into a fit of giggles.

WHUMPTOBER 2023, ALT PROMPT 7: EXAMINATION

I'm dead certain I could've written something with "Neglect" had my brain been in the mood for it, but alas, it didn't come to pass; so instead, I pulled an alt prompt from the depths. I almost made this about another HSAU character because I know I'll have Camilla in a caretaking role later on; but it was too tempting and I was more inspired by this one.

Like, listen. I'm not a big canon Camilla enjoyer (I just think, outside her armour, she looks neat); but I love her HSAU version so much. She's got to be one of my favourite altered characters to write from it with Hikaru, Tsubaki and Yayoi.

Because yes, this is an AU fanfiction, set in a universe that already exists, yada yada yada. It's not mandatory to know my worldbuilding, you just need to keep in mind that this is set in modern France (honhon baguette croissant) and also I write those characters marginally better and very differently than they are in their game of origin. That's kind of it.

Growing up with siblings to take care of makes one very aware of their discomfort and Camilla is very much no exception. In fact, she may have been the reason why this rule exists and why it even exists inside her mind.

It doesn’t take long for her radar to work, this morning: Elise walks down the stairs with a slow, clumsy stride, rubbing her eyes and sniffling; so Camilla walks to her as soon as her baby sister, who goes to hug her with a whine. She puts a hand on her forehead, feeling the wet hair and low-grade fever.

“Cami, I don’t feel good,” Elise whispers, still shoved against her.

Her voice is hoarse, which comes to Camilla’s dulled surprise.

“You poor thing,” she coos. “Do you want to stay home?”

Elise nods, but it’s a light gesture: her head must hurt.

“It’s fine. Let’s get you back to bed, okay?”

She nods again.

Camilla slowly turns her sister in the other direction and back up the stairs, careful to her steps. Once they’re both back upstairs, she lets Elise get comfortable again as she gets the usual resources, always tucked in the same section of the bathroom’s cabinet: a cold compress, a box low-grade painkillers and Elise’s favourite strawberry-flavoured cough syrup.

When Xander soon peeks his head through the doorway, she gives him a finger in front of a smile. He nods.

It’s a lot more difficult to tell when Leo doesn’t feel fine, compared to Elise’s candour on the topic; but Camilla is a caring big sister and she has little trouble doing so, no matter how hard her little brother tries to push through discomfort for the sake of both his teenage pride and his altruistic wish not to disturb neither Xander nor she.

What’s truly more difficult with Leo is letting himself get vulnerable around someone else, even if that someone is his own older sister with a motherly approach to life. Still, this is merely a hurdle, not a dead-set end to her quest.

What works best with Leo is helping him from a distance – and it works in a similar way to examine him. He’s a lot stiffer when feeling ill or exhausted, so to remedy to this, she leaves painkillers and a hot bottle in his bedroom, right next to his lamp on his bedside table. If his eyes are glassy and his gaze is mussed, she makes sure the curtains are closed and all light is dim.

It’s not often that Leo acknowledges all of those silent hints, but when he does, he flops on her lap when she’s reading on the sofa, here for a pat or a quiet hug – but only once he isn’t contagious anymore, she’s noticed.

Very much to Camilla’s dismay, Hinoka can get very careless with herself. She goes fast and hard, all the time, in both her studies and her favourite sports; and what must happens, happens, more time than Camilla could count.

Today finds them once again in this very situation: Hinoka sitting on the bench of a changing room in her gymnasium of choice, a bleeding wound on her leg and a big scrape on the other, and Camilla kneeling in front of her, a first-aid kit next to her and her cleaned hands near the injuries.

“You need to be more careful, darling,” she chides her again with a smile tugging at her lips.

“One day, I guess,” Hinoka sighs. “But you gotta admit, that was impressive, right? Shun was gawking at me, that was awesome!”

She chuckles, despite the ugly wound in front of her. It’s shallow, as it often is, but it’s still bleeding a bunch and she has to compress it until she’s stemmed the flow of it.

“It’s going to sting.”

The scrape is also shallow, so she cleans it, bandages it and calls it a day.

“It’s no big deal!”

Finally, with the wound tamed, she does the same for it.

“Thank you so much, Camilla,” Hinoka tells her with the brightest smile, and her heart swells at it always does.

Perhaps someday, she won’t need to dress wounds to have intimacy with her…

Hinoka has a little brother just as intense as her, who just so happens to be Leo’s classmate. Camilla doesn’t know him nearly as much as her crush, let alone her own siblings, but she’s starting to see who Takumi is and how he reacts to things.

Just like Leo, he doesn’t like being dependant nor needing help; but unlike Leo, he tends to lash out at people asking if he needs a hand, rather than coldly turning it down with a tilted head. Takumi thinks being harsher is a good way to protect himself from harm, which has annoyed Leo for quite a long time (for understandable reasons); but lately, she’s noticed he hasn’t been as aggressive and on the defence lately.

This is why she’s only half surprised to see him standing in front of her, an uneasy expression on his face, split between pain and shame.

“Uhm… Can I ask you something, Camilla?”

“Of course, dear. What do you need from me?”

“Can you…” He passes a hand through his hair, grunts to himself and, beet red, spits out, “can you check out my ankle?”

“No problem. Why don’t you sit down?”

With a nod, Takumi limps to the nearest chair. The unease on his face doesn’t let up by the time she’s knelt in front of him and she chooses to ignore it, opting to focus on his request.

Camilla has no trouble finding the hurting ankle: it’s already fairly round and has gone blue. This is, without a doubt, a bad sprain; no wonder why the poor boy has been so uncomfortable.

“I’m sorry in advance,” she tells him with as gentle as a tone as she can.

She softly presses on the injury – and it immediately causes him to scream in blanching pain.

“It’s definitively sprained,” she concludes, this time out loud. “Someone needs to bring you to the hospital. Do you want me to call Ryoma or Hinoka?”

She gets back up, her phone already halfway in her hand, while he brushes tears from his eyes (oh, this must’ve been a terrible, terrible pain she inflicted on him…).

“Hinoka, please.”

She puts a hand on his shoulder and, as soon as he looks back at her, she gives him a smile.

“Don’t worry, it’ll be all good. I promise you.”

Takumi nods again, slightly more relaxed under her touch.

If Leo is hesitant to letting himself get examined as it’d require him to be vulnerable in front of someone else, then Xander is downright allergic to the very idea of someone caring for him, at least not without being able to give something back in return.

As such, the very few times she must step up and do an examination, it’s always a first step deal, a sort of gauging as to ease the work of the doctor who’ll she bring Xander to; because first-hand experience with dealing with her serial workaholic of an older brother has given her the highest empathy for the men and women who’ll have to deal with him next.

Camilla often has to step up when the winter holidays near and Xander catches something from either his students or one of their siblings (more often than not Elise, who tends to be a very effective healthy carrier against her will), and this morning is one of those times. Luckily for her and very painfully so for her brother, his exhaustion is pinning him in place, and it’s easy for her to get the upper hand.

Just his rattling cough would’ve been enough to deduce he isn’t fit for work, but she still takes the time to go through all of the signs. His skin is too hot to the touch, shivers and goosebumps adorning it. His dark rings are deeper than usual. His face is pale yet flushed red in places. His eyes are slightly unfocused and have trouble remaining open for long periods of times.

“It’s more than a cold, my dear brother,” she tells him with cold water flowing through her words.

“That’s what I suspected,” he muffles a cough inside his elbow. “I’ll go to the doctor later. Don’t worry about me, Cami—”

“Don’t be silly,” she interrupts him, fondness melting its way through the ice, “you can barely move, let alone drive a car. I’ll bring you there.”

“But—”

“No buts. You’ll let me take the reigns until you feel up to it again.”

Xander sighs, wheezing, but a smile tugs at his lips.

“Who else would I trust with such a duty?”

With Hinoka’s compliance in a dastard conspiracy, Xander decides to bring her not to a regular doctor, as she’d have expected, but a workmate of his. According to him, it’s the quickest solution, as unlike Dr Plegia, he isn’t nearly as demanded; and also, with how fast the twisting of her wrist happened, he didn’t want to risk it.

And this is how she’s finding herself in her own living room, sitting on the armchair, her forearm in the hands of someone whom she’s only seen when fetching Xander from the infirmary at his workplace. The doctor himself is quite the charming young man too, chestnut hair and brown eyes, a lab coat perfectly sitting on his slender frame – if she wasn’t committed to Hinoka, she’d have perhaps entertained him even more.

Truth be told, it’s quite the bizarre experience, to be the one examined and not the other way around, yet it’s so far not been as unpleasant as she was afraid it’d turn out being: not only is the doctor a pleasant man to be around, Xander is also with her and watching over her, so she has no concern whatsoever that doesn’t involve the pain in her wrist.

“It’s not as bad as I suspected it to be,” the doctor announces after minutes of silence. “It’s a light sprain, so as long as you keep it in place, it should be fine within a week. I’d still suggest you get it examined at a hospital if the pain gets worse or doesn’t subdue by next week.”

“Thank you very much, Doctor,” she replies, holding her pained wrist in her other hand.

“If I go back to my office, I can get you a brace for your wrist.”

“Don’t bother yourself with that, Jun, we’ll be fine,” Xander interjects. “We’re already beyond grateful you went out of your way for us.”

Noticing the doctor remains unconvinced despite the honest explanation, she adds,

“My brother is right, we already have a brace at home. You’ve done your job.”

“If you say so, then I’ll now take my leave. Have a nice day, Xander, Camilla.”

“Have a nice day as well, Doctor.”

They both watch him leave the house, his suitcase in hand, and silence comes back to their little home.

She exchanges a knowing look with her brother dearest. Xander speaks up first.

“I’ll get you our family brace.”

“Before you do so, can I ask you something very quick?”

“Of course, go ahead.”

“Why him in particular? Was Dr Plegia this busy?”

“It’s so rare you need to see a doctor, I figured you’d want the best option out there; and Jun seemed to me like the best of both worlds.”

“Good call,” Camilla admits with another smile.

“I’ll be right back.”

She watches him exit the living room and go up the stairs.

this is making me realize i'm more picky with my Yuri than I thought.

Caminoka is cute in theory, I just haven't seen anything that really grips my attention and makes me go "OH", Hana/Sakura.... I didn't really pay attention to either of them, sorry. And Orochi/Kagero is just completely off my radar. Im sorry this one turned out so negative 😭

When I started shipping them

I don't remember precisely, but I think it must have been some months after I got more into the FE fandom, which at the time for me was *sigh* ... Reddit.

My thoughts

These two are so sapphic it hurts.

Camilla definitely at the very least fancies Hinoka a lot, given she flirts with her at almost every chance she gets in Fates, but Hinoka's reactions also say a lot. Her face gets as red as her hair, she becomes incredibly flustered... but never actually rejects Camilla's advances. And this is consistent even in Heroes and Warriors, too!

Honestly if Fates had proper same-sex S supports that weren't for Corrin you bet they'd be the first to marry each other.

What makes me happy about them

Gods, the flirting. The shameless flirting. I could watch Camilla hit on Hinoka all day, their dynamic is everything.

It's also really sweet when you remember how self-conscious Hinoka feels about being a tomboy and not feminine enough, especially for a princess. And here comes Camilla, the peak, most feminine woman you could think of, adoring everything about her. How validating that must have felt for Hinoka once she gets used for it?

Also they're both really cool in completely different ways!

What makes me sad about them

The whole angst potential in Birthright and Conquest. Imagine realizing you're in love with the princess of the nation who's bringing your kingdom to ruin? Who's responsible for the deaths of your siblings? Just how conflicted and ashamed of yourself you must feel?

In addition, Queen Camilla/Kinshi Hinoka(who could be Queen Hinoka from CQ) in Heroes is just this tenfold. Just realizing how better things could have been and longing for someone you should despise to death at this point.

Things I look for in fanfic

Honestly I just want more fics where Camilla/Hinoka is the main pair. Granted, I haven't looked for them very much, but I feel like I rarely find a story where they're the main focus.

Oh, and of course I want flirting. Even better if they're flirting while fighting each other.

Who I’d be comfortable them ending up with, if not each other

I'm not sure. I don't have any other strong ships for them, although I know they could definitely work with a lot of other people.

I know for sure they're other women, though.

My happily ever after for them

Post-Rev, and with Camilla leaving the Nohrian court. I'm not sure if Hinoka would live with her given how devoted she is to Hoshido, although the idea of them founding an orphanage together and basically being two moms is really cute.

Who is the big spoon/little spoon

Of course Camilla is the big spoon. But I like to imagine Hinoka trying to be the big spoon sometimes and Camilla finding it adorable.

Their favorite non-sexual activity

I'd say sewing because that's how they got close to each other, although sparring is another big one too!
