let’s say byler is watching a movie at home and will is sitting on mike’s lap under the covers. the Party is there too. What does byler do (while being oh so discreet about it ofc 😋)?
sorry it took me a second to get to this!
😋🙊 well, picturing mike securing the best spot for them to cuddle on the couch behind the rest of the party...
I think it's obvious enough the trouble starts when will lifts off mike's lap to reach for the fresh popcorn bowl dustin's holding out to him to share with mike, not only because it accentuates will's ass and mike's eyes are glued to it, but because will settles back down and does a happy wiggle over the taste of the popcorn. that movement happens right on top of mike's dick and because he's so easy it just immediately turns him on
they're not even that far into the movie, if he's going to stay worked up mike has to wait, unless... he just has his arms wrapped loosely around will's waist, and there's a point where will stretches through a yawn and mike takes the opportunity to slide his hands under will's sleep shirt and splay his hands properly on will's stomach. will freezes when he feels mike's touch, and mike can feel his breathing hitch under his hands when mike traces them up his abdomen and over his chest.
will has to fight bucking in mike's grasp when his thumbs flick over his sensitive nipples, but mike only softly brushes over them, not properly playing, which is almost worse for will whose head drops back against mike's shoulder at the touch. The blanket is up to will's neck covering both of them so it's easy for mike to move his hands a little more discreetly
mike stops after a bit, kissing his shoulder as a way to say good job not showing your friends what your moans sound like, and they go back to watching the movie.
except will can't concentrate now, and he turns to pout at mike, and they kiss about it as quiet as they can. As subtly as he can will starts grinding on mike's lap every now and then as payback, he can feel mike's breath against his neck and his dick hardening
mike's hands are on will's hips and will feels mike's fingers curl around the band of his sleep pants, and very nearly gasps when mike slowly starts pulling them down. he stares straight ahead at the screen while mike pulls them over his curves and his bare ass is exposed, and will's heart is racing over how cheeky and risky he feels right now. mike readjusts himself but will doesn't think much of it until he sits back down on mike's lap expecting to feel mike's hard on through his sleep pants - and instead feels what is definitely mike's own exposed hard dick against his ass cheeks. will does gasp now and tries to hide it in a cough, and mike just rubs will's ass soothingly and gently spreads his cheeks apart enough so that when mike cants his hips, his dick slides between so teasingly. they're both biting their lips and trying to hide their grins while they enjoy the mutual teasing, staring at their friends in front of them watching the movie
the thing is, irl being discreet really doesn't always work so 😭 they're not getting away with it. max definitely notices the shifting of the blankets the whole time, but in true good fujoshi friend form, she just lets it happen. she does wonder what's really happening though, she would've guessed fingering. lucas on the other hand, I can see being the one to bring it up to mike when they're alone and say they were kinda obvious. not that he cares, it'd be funny if it were he and max that got caught, but he has to give mike shit for it 😝

silly byler ficlet that is basically 665 words of me projecting onto mike
@bylersrise @unsurebisexualcore
Mike knows he should be asleep. He does. What he doesn’t know is why he isn’t sleeping yet. So he slowly, slowly, carefully, carefully extracts himself from his boyfriend, who has been asleep for three hours at this point, to get his earbuds out of the basket they have tied under the bedside table.
Scrawny by Wallows has been on repeat for a few days, so obviously Mike just keeps listening to it. He physically restrains himself from wiggling around under the blankets with excitement for the song and gets the urge to bite something on about the third repeat of the night. He doesn’t remember where he put his chewy necklace so he settles for biting the heel of his hand, smiling all the while.
He’s so absorbed in the music that he doesn’t notice when his sleepy boyfriend shifts underneath him and seemingly out of nowhere, Will is pulling Mike’s hand away from his mouth. Mike turns to look at Will, grinning sheepishly and pulling out his earbuds one at a time.
“Mike, what are you doing?” Will asks, voice hoarse with sleep. It makes Mike’s smile wider. Will is adorable. “It’s almost 2 in the morning. You should be asleep. Also I can hear that,” he adds, nodding at Mike’s earbuds that are resting on the blankets.
“Me too.” Mike grins. “And I know. I just couldn’t sleep. I don’t know why,” He responds, subconsciously bringing his hand back to his mouth. Will pulls it away before it even gets there.
“Where’s your necklace? I know it’s hard to accommodate yourself sometimes but I don’t want you hurting yourself like this.” Mike shrugs. Will rolls over to dig through their basket. Some of the contents include various fidget toys for both Mike and Will, Will’s headphones, phone chargers, a shared water bottle (okay maybe they’re a little bit gross but neither of them care. Haters gonna hate), and usually Mike’s rubber lego brick necklace that he chews on as a stim but it seems to be missing at the moment.
“Aha,” Will mutters, rolling back over with Mike’s necklace wrapped around his fingers. “Stop biting your hand.”
Mike slips the soft cord over his head and immediately starts biting the rubber. “Shorry,” he says, muffled. “It doeshn’t hurt doe,” he adds.
Will smiles at him endearingly. “It might not feel painful but look at the bruises on your palms. Biting your hands hurts you. That’s why we got you the necklaces in the first place, ya goof.”
Mike unclenches his teeth, letting the colorful lego brick drop to his chest. “I couldn’t find it.”
“It was right there,” Will grins at him incredulously.
“Object permanence issues?”
“Okay fine,” Will compromises, having suffered from the same problem for his whole life. Just yesterday morning he was looking for his keys for ten minutes before realizing they were literally in his hand. “Still listening to Scrawny?”
“Yes,” Mike gushes. “I am a scrawny motherfucker with a cool hairstyle, if you didn’t know.”
Will laughs. Mike has said the same thing at least five times a day since someone recommended the song to him last week. “Trust me, Mike, I know. Can you at least try to go to sleep soon?”
“I can try,” Mike agrees, putting his earbuds back in his ears but turning the volume down so it’s not distracting enough to keep him awake. Will kisses his forehead and mumbles a “goodnight” before settling down onto the pillows to go back to sleep.
Mike loves him, Mike loves him, Mike loves him. He pulls out an earbud. “Will,” he whispers, nudging his tired boyfriend.
“Mike,” Will whispers back.
“I love you.”
Will smiles, eyes still closed. “I love you too.”
It’s not the first time they’ve said it to each other but it still gives Mike butterflies everytime he hears it.
That night, Mike falls asleep next to his favorite person, listening to his favorite song, in his favorite place: his home.
uhmm hope you liked it if not then kiss my ass because i dont actually care this was very very self indulgent 😘

1, 49 and 3 for byler?
(these touch prompts give me LIFE good god ur writing is T O P T I E R)
After so many near-death experiences over the past few years, you’d think Mike would have gotten used to it now. But when the Upside Down vines grab him by the ankles and drag him straight through the gate, Will close behind him, he still manages to be taken aback.
They land hard on the ground on the other side of the Lover’s Lake gate, both gasping frantically for air after being suddenly yanked through the water. Mike sits up, blinking and staring out at the desolate sky surrounding them. He hasn’t been through a gate yet, and he immediately wishes he could have kept that streak up - he feels sort of nauseated, and also vaguely like the world is ending, probably because it is.
Nonetheless, Will is here, so things can’t be all bad. He glances over at his friend- no, his boyfriend now, as of two weeks ago, he reminds himself, and happiness cuts through his fear and adrenaline. Will is sprawled out on the ground, coughing as he lifts himself up onto his elbows and glances around. He looks dazed, like he’s not sure where he is, or maybe that’s just the trauma response talking.
“Will,” Mike says quietly, and Will’s eyes snap to him with no small amount of relief.
“Mike,” he chokes out, and he crawls his way over to him, grabbing Mike’s shoulder tightly, and Mike hurriedly reaches out to wrap an arm around him as he scoots closer. “We shouldn’t- God, the bats, we need to get out of here.”
Mike glances around, frowning. There don’t seem to be any bats around, he notes, nor are there any demodogs or new beasts lurking in the corners. Maybe they’re still distracted by Eddie’s corpse, lying somewhere near a trailer park forever abandoned, Mike thinks bitterly, and quickly shoots down that thought before he can think too hard about it. Now is not the time.
“I think we’re okay for now,” he murmurs to Will, who nods blankly, still staring around and looking incredibly shaken. “Are you okay?”
“I- yeah,” Will says, not believable in the slightest, and he continues to cling to Mike’s shoulders as Mike pulls him closer, halfway into his lap. “It’s just- I haven’t been here like this before. Through a gate. It feels more real.”
Mike hums sympathetically, arms wrapping carefully around Will’s back, and Will takes a shaky breath, head dropping to rest against Mike’s shoulder. “It’s gonna be okay,” Mike says, with as much conviction as he can muster, reaching up to brush gentle fingers through Will’s hair. “We just have to get back, and we’ll be fine.”
Will doesn’t respond, instead squirming closer to Mike and tucking his face away against his neck, face hidden and breath warm against Mike’s neck. Mike lets it happen for a beat, kissing the top of Will’s head and keeping one hand resting gently against the back of his neck as he feels Will’s breathing even out a little. Then he pulls back, gently lifting Will’s face off his shoulder with two fingers under his chin. “Talk to me,” Mike murmurs, as Will reluctantly blinks up at him, and he leans forward to press his forehead against Will’s, fingers gently brushing back and forth over Will’s jawline.
“It’s, like,” Will starts haltingly, licking his lips, “When we’re in Hawkins I can only feel him when he’s near, but here he’s- everywhere. I don’t like it.”
Mike shivers a little at the words, and not for the first time he wonders at what it must be like to be Will Byers, sweet, shy, sarcastic Will who has never done anything but be himself, and the world has thrown obstacle after obstacle at him for it. It’s not fair, not even a little, and Mike wants to take some of his pain, wants to transfer it onto himself just so that Will can be a little lighter. “We’re going to get him,” he says quietly, as Will continues to cling to him, “I want him dead, okay? We’re gonna do it.”
Will huffs something resembling a laugh, eyes falling shut as he leans further into Mike. “Yeah, I’m sure Vecna’s super intimidated by the scrawny fifteen-year-old with pent-up anger issues.”
“Who, me?” Mike asks in mock offense, and relief courses through him as Will laughs again. “I am not scrawny.” The other stuff, however, is right on the nose, but he chooses not to share this particular information.
“You are,” Will says, opening one eye and smiling at him, “But it’s okay. I still like you.”
“You love me,” Mike corrects, just because he can, and he tilts forward to press a kiss to Will’s lower lip. “You love me so bad.”
Will smiles, and he’s not shaking at all anymore when he responds, “Yeah, I do.”

apocalypse byler part 10: senior prom scenario!
mike and will occupy the empty auditorium, seeing all the abandoned decorations that scatter the place. streamers are on the floor, balloons are deflated and the sign that says ‘HH SENIOR PROM’ is old and tattered, its one side hanging from the other.
the two boys take a minute walking around, to process the tragic image of a school event that never came to be. will picks up a lone decoration and tries to attach it to the wall with a somber smile on his face. mike on the other hand, looks at the display of empty tables and strokes his hand through the fabric.
‘i wonder how theyre doing.’
‘who?’ mike asks.
’the people. they were supposed to have their prom.’
‘yeah?’
‘so im just wondering how they are right now. so many memories could have been made. they were probably so excited, and it was stolen away, just like that. they didnt know any better either.’ will says, rubbing his fingers together inspecting specks of dust. ‘they must have been so confused… scared.’
‘its not your fault. we’re going to take everything back the way it was.’ mike says in an instant, as if he knew what will was gonna say. will looks back at mike, then to the streamers, and nods slowly.
‘yeah…you’re right. sorry.’
mike stares at will for a while until he clears his throat. ‘you ever had dances back in cali?’
will smiles, shrugging. ‘yeah, one time. it was a smaller event but it was fun.’
mike smiles back, but it quickly fades. ‘did you..manage to meet anyone?’ mike asks.
will chuckles, smirking at mike. ‘well fortunately for you…no. i had some girls who asked me, but i said no.’
mike crosses his arms and looks down with a grumpy look. ‘if it were you 4 years ago, youd be dancing with girls all night.’
will blushes. ‘you’re exaggerating. it was only 2 girls, anyway.’
mike walks to will with a teasing grin on his face. ‘Will the Heartbreaker.’ has a nice ring to it.’ will giggles, punching mike gently on his stomach. ‘i am not.’
’good,’ mike say softly behind will, making the other boy turn around. mike then wraps his arms around will’s waist and pulls him close, making him gasp. ‘i only want you breaking my heart.’
will’s smile drops. ‘..i dont want to break your heart at all.’
’i don’t mind if you did. especially how much of a dumbass i was, i kinda deserve it.’ mike says it jokingly, but will’s kicked puppy dog expression stays the same, making mike’s humerous demeanor drop immediately.
will looks into mike’s eyes, putting both of his hands on his cheek. ‘stop saying that. all you deserve is the best.’ he retorts.
’well… good thing i already have the best.’ mike says with the biggest shit eating grin as their faces draw closer, their foreheads touching.
‘god, you’re such a dork.’ will whispers, looking down. he moves his hands from mike’s cheeks to around his neck, pulling mike closer than he already was. ‘i dont think i can handle you during an actual prom date.’
’oh you wouldnt, byers. im gonna be the cheesiest goddamn date youll have.’
‘oh yeah?’
’yeah. i have plans.’ mike says smugly.
’you thought about it?’ will presses, with mike nodding. will’s curiosity was getting the best of him, and feels himself getting bold.
‘…what would you prefer our prom date be like?’
with mike’s hands around will’s waist and will’s around his neck, it didnt take long for them to start swaying their bodies together. there was no music, only the sound of their gentle breathing. for both of them, it was more than enough.
‘hmm. let’s see. i’d uh..pick you up from your house…’
’mhmmm?’ will hums, looking at mike with so much love. his mouth starts to hurt from smiling.
’id give you flowers.’ will scoffs and rolls his eyes. mike chuckles and continues.
‘… and a mixtape,’ will looks up at mike once again. ‘..of all the songs that reminded me of you when you were gone.’ the two boys smile at each other.
’and we’d take photos. id hold your hand. our moms would be all over us.’
will laughs in response. ‘we’d never make it to prom at that point.
mike giggles. ‘yeah.’
he notices will bite his lip and avoiding mike’s gaze. ‘whats up?’ he asks.
will loves the way mike wont let him have any thought unspoken.
‘would you want to do that to yourself, though..?’
mike furrows his eyebrows, still not getting at what will’s saying.
’would you want to be seen with me?’
mike stops in his steps, ceasing their swaying motion. will’s gaze was still averted, clearly fearful.
‘i just dont want you to feel uncomfortable. i dont wanna pressure you or feel like you have to be seen with me because-
mike puts his one hand on will’s face and brushes his thumb on his cheek.
‘will. i love being with you. and i want people to see me be with you. and if they have a problem with that?’
mike’s thumb gently lifts will’s chin up, making their eyes meet. ‘’then they can go to hell.’
will stays silent, taken aback by mike’s simple but impactful words. its as if his worries were washed away in an instant. not too long after, his eyes are flooding with tears.
‘…are you sure?’
mike sighs and kisses will’s forehead. ‘yes. when this is all over, i swear to god im taking you to prom. and not just prom, but dates too. we’ll listen to music together. i’ll introduce you properly to my parents. and all the things i said before wont just be a fantasy anymore. we’ll be out in public, where everyone can see us. i dont want to hide anymore, will.’ will’s lips curl up the more he hears mike talk.
mike looks at him with expectant eyes. ‘do you… feel the same way?’
’yeah!…yeah.’ will sniffs. ‘i do. id really like that.’
‘cool!’ mike replies, his voice cracking. the two boys start laughing together.
‘cool.’
mike stops laughing and looks at will in the eyes with a confident smile. ’remember, whatever happens..’
’..we’ll face it together.’
they smooch ❤️❤️❤️

Preview of The Breaking Bounds
For Day One of Byler Week
A scream rings out from behind them.
As one, Will and Mike turn to see Robin lifted off the ground, feet kicking as they try to find purchase, hands gripping at the webbing wrapped around her throat. The dagger Mike had given her lays useless on the ground, knocked further away from Robin’s struggling form. An ettercap hangs above her, mouth opened wide as it prepares to bite her.
Mike curses. They are too far away, neither Will nor Mike are fast enough to reach her in time. Will is out of spells, and he has no ranged spells prepared that won’t harm Robin as well. He runs regardless, bounding steps bringing him closer, hands burning with his magic. If he’s fast enough, maybe he can heal any damage before it’s too late—
Crackling energy blasts past him. There’s a coldness to them, a freezing sensation that lasts half a second as both beams rush past him. He can only watch as both hit the ettercap, tearing into its skin and knocking it to the floor. Robin is released as the creature writhes in pain, and Mike rushes to her side, cutting the thread connecting her neck with the creature as he covers her. She’s shaking, and her hands grip his shoulder hard, fingers digging into his collarbones, but he doesn’t have the luxury to comfort her just yet. Not until he’s certain the creature is dead.
Will walks towards them, storm brewing in his eyes as he stares it down. He hums a note Mike doesn’t recognize and makes a show of pointing at it. The creature barely has time to let out a dying wail as it effectively shrivels up, limbs curling in on itself and falls silent as an empty husk.
Will looks at him. His eyes are dark again, green nearly disappeared. The sight makes something inside of him stutter.
To Mike’s credit, he lasts nearly a day before he confronts him. He waits until they’ve checked in at the nearest inn, until after he’s soothed Robin into slumber, before grabbing Will by the arm and dragging him outside. Will doesn’t look surprised as he leads them away from the village, heading further into the woods and away from any passerbys before finally turning on him and demanding, “What was that?”
Will pulls himself out of his grip. “What was what?”
Mike glares. Will strolls along in his vision, a picture of nonchalance, but Mike knows better. Any movement he makes is an attempt to hide his fidgeting.
“You know what,” he says. He steps forward, and tries to reach for Will again, but Will dodges, backing up until his back hits the tree. “That move on the ettercap. That wasn’t divine magic.”
Will rolls his shoulders back. He’s refusing to look Mike in the eye still, but he’s at least dropped the facade. “I said I served someone else. You’re the one who assumed it was another divine.”
“So what? You leave the abbey, leave the order and then sell your soul”—he stops, takes a breath as he tries to reign in his anger—“what could be so important you would demean yourself so?”
“Demean myself?” Will spits. “What, you think I’m somehow lesser because of a pact?”
“Aren’t you?” Mike shoots back. “Tell me, when have you last heard Aeyzar’s voice? When have the gods last answered you? And what did you get out of it? What could your fiend offer you that the gods didn’t readily give you?”
Will sneers. “Maybe if Aeyzar”—he spits the name with venom, a mockery of the reverence He deserves—“actually bothered to answer his disciples in their time of need, I wouldn’t have been forced to enter a pact in the first place!”
Mike grips the holy symbol hiding under his shirt, the wooden, malformed carving of intersecting twin stars that Will had made him for his eleventh birthday. The proof that once upon a time, Mike and Will served a god together. That they hadn't always stood at opposite ends of a spectrum.
"He answered you our entire childhood! So he fails to answer once, and you're willing to throw him aside? Is that so easy for you? To leave and forget about everything you once had with someone else because something else can offer 'better'?"
Will's face shutters. He pushes back against Mike and extracts himself. "You have no right to judge my choices," he says, words nearly lost in the wind for how silent they are. "I need to see this job through, but don't worry, the minute it's over you won't need to see me again."
He walks away. It's only after he's out of sight that Mike thinks to shout after him, "I'm not the one that keeps leaving!"
Extra, the character sheets for Mike and Will in this AU for anyone who wants to see them.

late new year's resolution: giving myself permission to yell without art
Tumblr media
Will transforming is always so good but it's fuckin impossible to search because there's no single word/tag for "in which Will looks physically fucked in various UD ways"
(I was specifically looking for someone's vecna!will art recently and I can't find it because I can't search tags with a ! since every post that includes Will and Vecna shows up....byler was just sitting there on the ground and Will was all tall and gangly and had his vines wrapping around Mike (as always) with Mike touching one....like a cursed finger boop......anyway if you know what I'm talking about, send me a link I'm begging)
ngl more than Will transforming and Mike comforting him, I like to think about fucked up Will comforting MIKE. consider:
4-5 — the monster under Mike's bed has gotten good at navigating the Wheeler's house when no one's home/everyone's asleep, but Mike can hear it sometimes and one day he decides "I AM GOING TO CATCH WHATEVER IS IN MY ROOM!! MOM SAYS THERE'S NO MONSTERS BUT I KNOW IT'S HERE!!!!"
Mike is constantly throwing things under his bed when he doesn't wanna clean up so Will has gotten used to Mike just reaching around for whatever he needs and going back to his human business so he like....deadass doesn't even attempt to hide when Mike Does look for him while setting a trap. his mistake. he panicked and wanted to calm Mike down but he overcompensated and destroyed any threatening vibes he might have had.
anyway now he's Mike's cryptid imaginary friend for the forseeable future and they have a sort of Sully/Boo dynamic, in which Mike is just fucking thrilled with this giant cute monster and Will is panicking about a human trying to be all clingy and gross because this is Not how it's supposed to go what the fuck is happening
6-8 — a friendless Mike is having a bad time and his extreme negative emotions yeet him into the UD and demoWill has to wordlessly calm him down and try to figure out how to send him back to wherever he came from. now he has this little human menace riding on his bony shoulders everywhere because Mike's self-preservation skills are nonexistent and he kept almost getting strangled by vines or pissing off packs of demodogs and also Will has to keep him alive without letting him get more contaminated than he already is from breathing the air.
when Mike does get back home, and sort of explains where he was and what was happening, no one believes him and they try to make him process it as a near death experience. I mean he eventually lies and tells people what they want to hear but like he can see evidence of Will following him around on the Other Side sometimes, in the present, not as a trauma filter or waking nightmare but just...flickering lights, temporary marks on the walls, a general feeling of no longer being alone and friendless. when Will is older and stronger, or if Mike has another particularly Bad Time, they'll see each other again.
9-12 — sentient horror Will Byers isn't supposed to be here but he doesn't have good control over his powers yet and he's not sure how to go back and he was spotted by someone while considering his options....which immediately narrowed his choice down to "do not permanently damage this human's brain with my incomprehensible form" so Mike just has a mysterious cloaked friend in the woods for a while (a really shitty cloak!! his wizard robe is pathetic rn but he will eventually gain more control and take a more comprehensible purposeful form, so he can face Mike looking fancy as fuck) eventually Will is gonna walk out looking like a background character from one of Mike's favorite fantasy movies and Mike will lose his entire shit. his ghost friend is cool as hell and he is so glad his mom forced him to go outside that day.
13-15 — Will is in the human world on purpose, has a human appearance on purpose, makes emotional connections on purpose......but it can't last forever. he has to take frequent trips to the UD to get the proper nutrients/energy to survive. if he doesn't return on time, he'll start losing his appearance or just sorta melt out of this dimension. which isn't really a threat to his physical health or anything, but having someone Witness it could definitely be detrimental to that Emotional Connections thing.
anyway Will often gets a lil too caught up in spending time with Mike and has to make a quick escape. one time when he realizes it's time to go Mike interrupts, Will blatantly fails to come up with an excuse, byler get in a mild argument about lying which wastes even more time, and then they faces the consequences of their affection (affection meaning Will not wanting to explain in order to keep Mike's mental health intact, and Mike wanting to know what's wrong because Will always seems like he's in fucking peril but never explains)
not that Mike ends up caring after he starts to understand the situation, but bro he thought Will was fucking dying or getting abducted by aliens or some shit in the middle of having an actual fight about Will "disappearing" like he was just not having a good time. Will chilled him out tho. and also now he can show Mike more of his capabilities
I will type about aus until my hands fall off......

I have been thinking about the flipped parallel when you switch Mileven for Byler
I mean, El was always clinging to Mike like she were some kind of accessory, shrunken behind him with her arm tightly linked in his. Where as he stands there very loosely, casually, not really engaged in the same way. It is like this in so many scenes. To me, it just looks like they're together because it's "comfortable" and "familiar". He was the first person to find her so she feels safe with him. She was his "cool" find out in the woods, the girl with superpowers, that he could show off to his nerd friends.
No wonder as their individual characters grow and develop, they end up barely holding the relationship together because they are extremely different and don't actually need each other anymore. El isn't that scared girl all alone in the woods anymore. She has Hopper, Joyce, Will, Max...the rest of the party. She has so much more support now. She has a family. She has friends. Mike and his friends are growing up, the party are equally close to El. He can't express his feelings for El because those particular feelings just aren't there. Not to mention how he seems to notice the distance that has grown between himself and Will, more than he has noticed the distance that has grown between himself and El. Trying to salvage what he has with Will, confessing that he felt like he'd lost him, yet letting El slip between his fingers because it definitely looks like there is a huge shift in their relationship.
I like the idea that things would be so much different if Mike were with Will. Mike would have his arm wrapped around him when they stand together. He would look at him, finding his mouth curling into a smile, kissing him on the cheek. Their fingers would be entwined as they stand closely, side by side.
It would look extremely different to the flipped parallel of Mileven.
It would actually look like love

ok ok so for the 300 followers thingy with a byler prompt. i have thoughts. and they’re gonna become ur problem.
so my favorite one is, ever cliché: they’re fighting and then one of them (mike) yells “because i love u” and then yeah. if that makes sense
congratulations!! 🥳🥳💖💖
-lillian (missmaxmayfield)
@missmaxmayfield I loved this idea, it was so cute and fun to write! Thank you for the prompt, I hope you enjoy this! 🥰 🥰🥰
“Why do you always do this?” Will cried, slamming the Wheeler’s back door as he headed towards his bike. “It’s fine for Lucas to date Max, and you have no problem with Suzie, but God forbid I go out with somebody Mike!”
“It’s not the same! You hardly even know Matt, and you’re going to choose a stupid date with him over our movie night?”
“It’s not stupid, Mike!” Will picked up his bike, walking towards the edge of the driveway, ignoring Mike as he followed him. “Matt seems nice, and in case you haven’t noticed, there aren’t a lot of opportunities to date for me here in Hawkins.”
“So that means you’re gonna go out with the first guy who shows interest?” Mike grabbed his handlebars, preventing Will from leaving.
“I thought this was what you wanted, Mike? For me to grow up and finally get out of your basement? We aren’t kids anymore Mike; everyone is moving on. Shouldn’t I get that chance too?”
Mike was quiet but let go of the handlebars.
“I just thought… I mean, we said we were friends, Will. Best friends. I thought that meant something to you.”
Will reeled back as if he’d been slapped. “Oh, fuck you, Mike! Don’t you dare act as if it’s my fault we’ve been growing apart. You know how much you mean to me, you’re the one who has been pulling away.”
“I have not!”
“Have so! Ever since…” Will trailed off, searching Mike’s eyes. “Oh.”
Mike stared into his eyes, too afraid to look away.
“I get it. Ever since you found out I like-“ Will swallowed. “-boys, you’ve been distant.”
Mike looked away.
“That’s what this is, right?” he felt tears welling up in his eyes. “You- you’re grossed out, you think I’m disgusting-“ He pulled away, mounting his bike.
“No, Will, that’s not it, come on.” Mike stood in front of him as he pedaled, grabbing the handlebars again, his hands atop of Will’s. “Wait!”
“No!” Will sobbed, chest heaving. “I’ve seen you looking at me, moving away from me. If you have such a problem with it, Mike, I’d rather you just-“
“It’s because I’m in love with you, asshole!” Mike yelled, stopping Will mid-sentence.
Will stared at him, uncomprehending. Mike swallowed, moving a hand to cup Will’s cheek.
“I love you, Will. And sometimes, it hurts to see that you’d rather be with Matt or some other douche, when I’m right here.” He wiped away Will’s tears. “I’m right here. And I wish that you saw me.”
Will leaned into Mike’s touch, closing his eyes. “But I do see you, Mike. You’re all I’ve ever seen since I was five years old.”
Mike grinned, bringing their foreheads together. “Yeah?”
Will returned his smile. “Yeah, dumb ass-“ Mike crashed into him, crushing their mouths together, tangling his fingers in Wills hair.
Will wrapped his arms around Mike, gripping his shoulders. He’d thought about kissing Mike for almost a decade, he wanted to remember everything, the shape of his mouth, the touch of his hands-
Mike broke away first, staying in the circle of Will’s arms. “I love you, Will Byers, and I always will.”
Will smiled, kissing his cheek. “I love you, too, Mike.”

Ch.2
When we walk in, Murray is in the kitchen cooking.
What the hell is Murray doing here?
“Hey kids, you like risotto?” He grins at us.
“W-What?” I stammer.
“Risotto, it's a rice dish.” He says obtusely.
“No, I know what risotto is- What are you doing here?”
“I had a work thing in the area. I’m just dropping by to visit.” Murray laughs at the looks on our faces.
“It's good to see you kids.” He smiles.
-
We are sitting around the dinner table. There's a tension in the air. El sits between Mike and me. Jonathan and Argyle are across from us, stoned out of their minds.
“So..” Mom starts. “I forgot to tell you guys, I have a business trip tomorrow.” She looks guilty about springing this on us last second.
“What?” El, Mike, and I say in unison.
“Yeah, it's in Alaska.”
“Alaska?!” We again speak in unison.
Mom rambles on about her trip, but I'm not listening. I can't stop seeing Angela with blood pouring down her face.
“So what did you guys do today?” Mom asks us.
“Oh man, this girl got schmacked in the head today at the roller rink.” Argyle chimes in.
Eleven glares at him like she wishes he would drop dead.
“Schmacked?” Murray asks.
“Yeah, with one of those roller skates.” Argyle doesn't get the memo.
“It was plastic.” Jonathan chimes in.
“Rubber.” Argyle argues, “So anyways, looks like she's going to be fine.”
“She didn't look fine.” Mike says.
Jesus Mike, some tact?
Suddenly, Eleven scoots out her chair, and storms away from the table.
“What is going on with you guys?” Mom looks upset, “El, you're going to miss out on Will’s birthday cake!” She calls after Eleven, but there's no response.
I feel relief wash over me. At least Mom remembered my birthday.
“It's your birthday?” Murray asks.
“Yeah,” I look away, embarrassed. “It's nothing special.”
“Of course it's special.” Mike mutters.
My face grows warm, but I reassure myself that that doesn't mean anything.
“Okay, cake time!” Mom gets up and goes into the kitchen. She returns with a cake. The cake has a crude drawing of a dragon in frosting, and it says “Happy 15th Birthday, Will!” surrounded by fire from the dragon's mouth.
“Remember to save some for El, guys.” Mom smiles.
She puts candles in the cake. Mike jumps up to turn off the lights, and my family that I love so much (plus Murray and Argyle) start singing to me.
“Happy birthday dear Will, happy birthday to you!”
I blow out the candles.
“Make a wish!” Mom says.
I wish Mike would see me the way I see him.
“Now, it's not much, but I have a present for you.” Mom brings out a wrapped package.
I take it from her, and tear into it. It's a pack of fancy oil paints! 12 colors. I grin. “This is amazing Mom, thank you!” I jump up to hug her.
She holds me tight, “I'm so proud of you honey. You've been through so much.”
-
Mike is sleeping on the floor of my room. The night is mostly uneventful. We listen to tunes (some of my favorites! Mike lets me pick). I play “Boys Don't Cry” by The Cure. Mike and I sit on my bed, side by side, for a moment. I bob my head and tap my fingers, humming softly to the song.
“Is this your favorite song right now?” He asks me.
We’ve been apart so long, he doesn't know.
“Yeah..” I smile.
Mike jumps up from the bed, looks me dead in the eye, and takes my hand. He pulls me up and I have a hard time maintaining my balance. Mike puts his hands on my shoulders to steady me.
“Woah-” I say,” What are you doing?”
“Dancing!” Mike grins. He does the sprinkler.
You are such a goof, Mike Wheeler!
Mike goes all out on his dance moves, and I sway gently to the beat. I can feel my face grow warm.
“Oh, c’mon,” he nudges my arm, “You can do better than that.”
“Oh really? Is that a challenge, Wheeler?” I grin, and pick up a comb from my bedside table.
“Yeah, c’mon Byers, show me what you got!”
Holding the comb like a microphone, I start belting out the lyrics with all I've got.
“So I try to laugh about it
Cover it all up with lies..”
I dance my heart out, and Mike laughs.
“I try to laugh about it
Hiding the tears in my eyes..”
I slowly walk toward him, singing, swaying, and staring into his eyes. His smile fades ever so slightly. He stares back at me.
“'Cause boys don't cry
Boys don't cry..”
I wish I had the guts to kiss you..
I put my hand on his shoulder, wiggle my eyebrows, and giggle.
He looks relieved?
“I would break down at your feet
And beg forgiveness, plead with you”
I sing even louder this time and spin around, dancing away. I can feel Mike’s eyes bore into the back of my head.
“But I know that it's too late
And now there's nothing I can do…”
I swing my arm around like I’m jamming out on an electric guitar.
I” would tell you that I loved you
If I thought that you would stay
But I know that it's no use
And you've already gone away”
I sing those last lines softly. They hold the most meaning in my heart.
I would tell you that I loved you…
I frown, and grow still.
“You okay, Will?”
I turn to look at him. “Yeah.” I smile softly.
We listen to “Girls on Film” by Duran Duran. “Ballroom Blitz” by Sweet. “Material Girl” by Madonna.
Mike and I dance until there is a knock on the door.
“Hey! People are trying to sleep out here, boys.” It's Mom.
“Sorry Mom!” I turn off the music. Mike and I stare at each other, then break out in laughter. We flop onto my bed and look up at the ceiling. I turn on my lava lamp. Colors dance on the walls.
I must have fallen asleep at some point.

love keeps you safe
ao3
have a byler drabble (this takes place post show, established relationship)
-----
Will is having one of those days. The days where dark clouds are unavoidable and Will can’t even pretend to ignore how much he hates himself. He knows he’s broken, but everyone’s expected him to be fixed by now, so what’s the point, really? It’s all over now. Will should just get over it.
Well, Will supposes not everyone expects him to be magically repaired after years of traumatic experiences with monsters and shadow dimensions and such. He has one person, someone who’s always been there. Always.
Now that they’re- well, together is what they call it, since labels are scary and don’t feel right- now that they’re together, a part of him feels happy. For the first time in years, a part of him is complete. It’s like he’s finally releasing a breath of air he’s been holding in for four years, and it’s indescribable. It’s perfect.
But then there’s another part of him, still battered and bruised from all they’ve been through. In the process of healing, but in a way, not even close to whole.
And so, here Will is, sitting on his bed and wishing for not the first time that he could simply Not Be. Maybe there’s a dimension between the world and the Upside Down, one where one can simply float, without the pressure of life. It would be easy to be happy there. Will daydreams about it often.
But before he can fully float away, he’s tapped on the arm. He looks up to see Mike, looking at him with big, concerned eyes.
“Are you okay?”
In response, Will leans into his- his Mike. No words, just hold me, he thinks, and hopes Mike can read his mind.
Mike wraps an arm around Will as his head rests on his shoulder. Will curls up against him. He purposely listens to Mike’s breathing instead of his thoughts. Amongst the various negative things bouncing around his brain, there’s the distinct realization that Mike is so warm. And comfortable. And so pretty and beautiful and kind and and and-
“Will?”
“Mmm?”
Mike takes Will’s hands- Mike’s hands are so warm- and looks him in the eye. Will doesn’t return the look- he’s still halfway retreated into himself, like a turtle. That’s all he is, a useless turtle.
“What’s wrong?” Mike asks, interlocking their fingers. Will finally looks up to meet his b- to meet Mike’s eyes, and sees that they’re overflowing with something. Something that looks like concern and love and that special gaze that’s reserved for Will. And what the hell? Will’s heart skips a beat.
Fuck you, Mike. Will’s heart aches in a thousand different ways. Fuck you for caring.
Will squeezes Mike’s hands and shrugs. Right now all he really wants is to be held and cradled and hugged. Being a person is awful but when you get to cuddle other people it’s okay sometimes.
“Talk about it?” Mike asks gently. Will shakes his head.
“Can you just hold me?” Will asks, voice quiet. He traces circles with his thumbs on the back of Mike’s hands and looks up to meet his eyes. Along with the caring, concerned boyfriend expression that Mike has, Will sees the hint of a smile, overflowing with affection.
Softly, he replies, “Of course, Will.”
They rearrange themselves on Will’s bed so that they’re lying down. Once they’re comfortable, Will buries his face into Mike’s chest, and Mike wraps an arm around Will, rubbing his hand back and forth on his back. Will’s arms find Mike’s back and he pulls him ever closer. Touch. Comfort. They breathe together.
This is everything, Will decides. This is the world.
“Hey, Mike?” he mumbles.
“Mhm?”
“I’m happy.” And he means it.
Will can hear the smile in Mike’s voice as he replies, “I’m happy that you’re happy.” Will bites back a cheesy smile of his own, before giving up and letting it overtake his face.
They let the quiet return. The room is filled only with the sound of two boys’ breath. Will just lets himself relax, not into his made-up dimension of nothingness, but into the person he’s in love with. Mike. It’s a nice change of pace from the nothingness. The nothingness is safe, but it’s so cold and empty and lonely. Sometimes, when Will is in an especially dark mood, it reminds him of the Upside-Down.
Mike, though? Mike is his home. The warm presence that’s always been there and will always be there. The person Will can really be himself around, without having to pretend that he’s not broken. Maybe it works, his wandering mind says, because we’re both broken.
With that thought, he pulls Mike even closer. “Will-”
“I love you,” he practically whispers.
There’s a pause, and Will hopes he hasn’t fucked this up. But then a hand slips into Will’s hair, and Mike touches their foreheads together. Will meets Mike’s eyes, his heart racing in a good, exciting way. Mike is smiling so wide that Will thinks he might combust.
“I love you, too.”
And then they lean into each other. Will’s hands find Mike’s face and he catches his lips. Their kisses are still clumsy, but in their own way, perfect. They break apart, and Mike kisses him again gently.
They might both be broken, but they have each other. Will wouldn’t trade it for the world.

I HAD THE BEST BYLER DREAM LAST NIGHT AND I REALLY WANNA SHARE IT WITH YOU ALL
it's so long (literally 2k words) so im gonna put it under the cut haha <3
so basically this would take place after mike and will start dating or something, idk exactly the time frame (i picture them being like 18 or something and this is the summer before college) and will goes to this summer arts program for like 2/3 months (i dunno how long american summer is but something like that) and its all the way far from home so there is dorms and stuff and he's "not in hawkins anymore" (no pun intended)
mike and will decide after will finishes his school they'd go to college together (cuz they're gonna be comic book artists together bc thats boyfriend shit) so throughout these months he's practically just waiting for will (<333333)
so one specific scene i remember from my dream involved will and mike getting off the bus to the school and then they hug and then mike grabs wills hand and brings him behind the bus and then he gives will a biggg kiss bc he won't be able to kiss him for 3 months. then they say they love each other and will gives him another quick kiss and is like "two kisses". they agree they'd call each other every day.
so will goes inside and mike goes back on the bus and goes home.
and basically the whole day is a whirl, until the end of it, in which mike is sitting in the kitchen near the phone waiting for like 3 hours for will to call, and will doesn't end up calling.
AND THEN IT GETS SPICYYYYY
so meanwhile at the arts program will asks like the front desk or something if he can call mike and they say phone is offlimits and they don't let him call mike
so then will goes to sleep and he's paranoid that he thinks mike is gonna hate him or something like that
mk than the next day in class there is this girl (they didn't reveal her name in the dream, ill call her stella) so stella is basically looking at will the entire class but will doesn't know it
so when they exit the class stella's like "hi" and will says "hi"
then stella says "i like your painting."
will is like rlly weirded out so he goes "thanks?"
"i um- hope this doesn't sound weird but i have no friends, do you want to be mine?"
"sure"
and then end of scene (this does not sound like a normal conversation but it's my dream so it doesn't have to make sense"
so BACK AT HAWKINS mike is still sleeping even tho it's like 3 pm because yk depressed boyfriend shit but then the PHONE RINGS and mike gets out of bed frantically and goes to the phone and he picks it up and is like "will?" and then it answers "it's el, idiot"
i feel like this is important for context but el speaks english very well now and hoppers back and she lives with hopper and not the byers anymore. ANYWAYS
el says "how's will?"
mike says "idk he didn't call"
"he didn't?"
"no, he didn't"
"okay. well maybe he will call later"
"yeah mb"
"wanna come over"
"ok"
so mike hangs up and gets changed and goes to el's house bc they r a couple o' besties and when he gets there it's like a therapy sessions bc mike usally talks to will every single day and he can't for like 3 months (unless will calls, but he's not going to) so he accepts he's gonna be depressed for 3 months and he's just talking to el about how he's gonna miss him so much and no be able to see his face and that shit
so el's like "well do u wanna do something to take ur mind off of him"
and mike's like "no im not gonna replace will" (I SCREAMED IN MY DREAM SRSLY)
but than el says "okay. guess im gonna go to the mall by myself" (ig starcourt is rebuilt by now)
and than mike bolts up and is like "fine"
"we can by something for will"
"okay yay"
so then they go to starcourt yasss!!
anyways back at the art school will is having lunch and stella is with he friends (even tho she said she doesn't have any friends) and one of her friends is like "omg did you see _____ he's so hot"
and another friend says "YESS! but ____ is cuter"
"what abt u stella? who do u have ur eyes on"
she says "byers" BUT NOOOOOOO WILL IS MIKES MAN
and they say "ew that kid who came back to life"
she says "yea. but he's cute, and shy, and once i wrap them around my finger i can get them to do anything"
so then she goes to sit down next to will at lunch
"hi will"
"hi"
"hru"
"im good"
"okay. good." and she gets upset because will goes ask how she is but she keeps her urging rage inside. and than they have this weird conversation and will is uncomfortable the whole time bc shes all like flirting with him and will is seeing someone obvi
but then she puts a hand on will's shoulder and he's shaking and then says something (idk what it is it wasn't explaining in my dream) then will stands up and runs to the bathroom. so he's just sitting in the stalls crying.
okay back at starcourt this part wasn't shown in my dream but im just gonna make up that mike and el go looking around starcourt for something for will (sort of like the mike/lucas/will montage where they were looking for stuff for el) and then i guess they find something for will and i don't have the slightest idea what they could have got for him BUT THEY GOT HIM SOMETHING GOOD
so mike's all happy but they'res still that depression inside of him lol
so fast forward a week, it really isn't explained but ill just make up that will still hasn't called mike, and he's super sad and all sleeping in but decides to look through his good ol binder full of will's drawings and in the arts school will and stella have a few more interactions im sure which are still very uncomfortable
okay so it's lunch again in the cafeteria and somehow will and stella are talking again but somehow it ends in stella kissing will and will like pulls away immediatley and is like "what is wrong with you!?"
and she says "what?"
"i'm seeing someone!"
"oh i uh- i didn't know."
the whole cafeteria is staring at them
so will's freaking out almost on the verge of a panic attack "idk what to do, he's gonna hate me and-"
"he?"
will has the look on his face like shit shit shit oh fuck no
"you're gay?"
"i-"
and will runs off once again. and everyone in the whole cafeteria knows that he's day and ofc with everybody being homophobic will knows it's not good at all bc everyone's gonna bully him
so then the next day he goes to class and the teacher is like "does anyone care to tell me where ___ is?" (it would be like a math question like 'where x is' but in art idkkk) and then the teacher calls on "will? can you tell me where ___ is?" and they'res a pause and then the teacher says "or perhaps you'd want to find your boyfriend instead?" (giving me anne with an e vibes prolly cuz i did a rewatch last weekend but i won't explain more in case some people haven't watched it but) anyways will stands up from his seat, everyone is looking at him, and he's shaking and so concerned but then he goes "fuck. you" badass will yeaaaa thats my boy
so then he runs out of the classroom and out of the school in a really cool montage way but then he realizes he's like 2 hours away from home but he runs and runs and he goes to a random bustop (it's not even garanteed if it takes him to hawkins but whatever) he gets on and tries to go back to hawkins.
and soon enough, he gets there, and immediatley goes to the wheelers because he needs to see mike and apologize for everything. so he's at the wheelers, and rings the doorbell, realizing he's still in his uniform lol but karen answers and mike is upstairs in his room sulking (i picture it would be 8 pm by now) so will asks for mike and karen calls mike. mike groans obviously because he doesn't know it's his boy, but he comes down, karen gets out of the way and as soon as he sees will they have a really big hug and it's super sweet and my heart UFHEIOSKA
mike says his usual "are you okay?" and mike is still confused as shit but will says "i'm sorry i'm sorry i'm sorry" and mike says "you don't have to be sorry for anyrhing" but will says "ill explain"
so then they go to will's room, side-by-side on his bed and will starts explaining everything
(this is mostly improvised by me but it's still pretty similar to the dream)
"i hated it."
"the school?"
"yeah. there was no you, (mike blushes lmao), everything was terrible, i felt so lonely, they didn't let me call you-"
"what?"
"they said the phone was off limits. i wanted to talk to you so bad and i thought you'd hate me"
"i could never hate you, will, even if i tried." will smiles
"and then there was this girl, and she hit on me and i didn't know what to do bc i'd be the face of the school if i told her i was dating you and was gay and today she kissed me"
"WHAT"
"im sorry im sorry i didn't kiss back and i was so scared bc i never was in a relationship before and i was so scared it was considered cheating-"
and mike LAUGHSS
"what? mike? what's wrong?"
"if you don't do anything back, it's not considerd 'cheating'"
"oh. good. are you mad at me?"
"what? no! no never!" so mike opens his arms and says "come here" so will and mike hug or something like that and then mike says "do you need me to beat her up?"
and will says "you can't even beat eggs. besides, your noodle arms wouldn't be able to do harm to even a fly"
so mike laughs and says "i'm glad your home"
so will blurts "i cursed out a teacher"
"you? cursing?"
"yes."
"might have to start calling you a bad boy now"
will just smiles and says "i love you"
and mike says "i love you too"
AND THEN END AND IM SO PROUD OF MYSELF BC I LOVE THIS DREAM LIKE I CAN'T BELIEVE MY BRAIN THOUGHT OF THIS BUT IM OBSESSED
ALSO ONCE I FINISH WYBMFFAE ILL PROBABLY WRITE THIS INTO A FULL BLOWN FIC BUT AHIHFUSAH
edit: i have no idea what mike did with the present him and el bought for will but i guess they ended up giving it to him lol

In the Warmth of Your Smile
Pairing: Byeler/Byler
Words: 2441
Summary: Will’s had a pretty bad night. Scratch that, pretty bad year. Mike can’t rewind time, but he can be here.
Warning: None, they’re kids and they have their first kiss though? (Well, Mike’s second, sorry.)
Author’s Note: Thanks for reading this! I just have a lot of thoughts about that Halloween night. Can you believe I didn’t mention “Crazy together” once? I hope the feeling is invoked, though. You can also find this and all my other Byeler fics on my AO3 here!
They’re sitting shoulder to shoulder with legs pressed in close in Mike’s basement. It must be getting pretty late now. The fear’s still sitting in Will’s stomach like a lump, but it’s settled now thanks to Mike and his comforting words. His reassurances are still floating about in Will’s head when Mike says something and he has to turn to him to try to catch it.
“Huh?”
Mike scoffs lightly at his friend. “I said you really should have told me about that girl-”
“Max.”
“Yeah, whatever. you should have told me she was coming with us tonight, that you were inviting her.”
“You’re still upset over that? Come on, Mike.”
“What? Because of her-” he cuts himself off and lowers his voice again. “If I wasn’t so focused on all that, I would’ve been with you the whole time.” his chin is jutting out and Will’s worried he might cry, but instead he just curls his fists up, pulling on the pants of his Ghostbusters suit.
“Hey, it’s nobody’s fault. And don’t blame Max. ‘Sides you never asked about your friend, El being in the party. Just decided." he says it matter of factually as he swipes a bite-size snickers from the table and unwraps it. He tries to avoid conversations about her usually, especially if Mike’s the one talking about her, but he can’t help the comment that rolls off his tongue.
“What?” Mike has all of a second to feel offended before he looks at Will’s face. That’s right, now isn’t about him and besides, Will’s right anyway. He always seems to be right. He wishes he knew what Will was thinking though.
“Nothing. I just d- Look, it doesn’t matter anyway, okay?” Will sticks the whole snickers in his mouth and bites down. Hard. It gives him something else to focus on, other than the thoughts running through his mind.
“Sheesh, you won’t even have a conversation with me? Fine! I don’t get what the problem is anyway? It’s not like she’s done anything to you! She even helped save you!” During Mikes little tirade, Will finishes his mini up, but was now looking to the ground, visibly shaking.
He turns towards his friend within the second Mike was done talking and lets loose on him. “Jeez, I just don’t like her, okay?! Not everybody has to like everybody and I don’t! You don’t like Max? Well I don’t like this El you-you keep talking about! God, you can’t just shut up about her! I- I mean I get it, you care but guess what? I’m right here, Mike!” There are tears in Will’s sullen eyes now, but he keeps going, voice softer this time. “I came back. She left. You’re always here for me, but it’s like you’re not at the same time and I hate it.” The words are practically growled as they make their way out of Will’s angry throat.
Mike looks at Will, his best friend since they were five, as if he’s been stricken. It hurts, to hear all the thoughts and feelings that have been built up inside his small friend this whole time he’s been back home. He thought it’d been him and Will against the rest of the world, but it turns out he’d been part of what was hurting him most.
He blinks and feels something running down his cheeks. Huh? How long has he been crying? “I-I’m sorry. Will, I-” He looks down at his lap, then back up at the boy in front of him. Tears escape his eyes too and Mike wants to hold his hand or hug him, to comfort and be comforted, but he’s afraid he’s lost those privileges now, so he settles for just looking at his sad face, sure that he’s never felt so crushed in his life, excluding the time he saw “Will’s” body being pulled from the quarry.
“Will, I didn’t know you felt like that. I thought we told each other everything.” Will’s sharp look makes Mike flinch and inhale a breath.
“Yeah, so did I. But I guess not anymore.” When Mike looks at him questioningly, Will sighs. “You and El sure got pretty close while I was- gone.”
Mike is stunned for a second. He racks his brain and then it clicks. No, no way. “Will, it’s not like that! I- We weren't -!” He clumsily scrambles closer to Will on the couch and clutches both of his hands in his own. “I promise it wasn’t like that. Not for me, definitely! You know I-” The words don’t quite make it out of his lips, but the answering blush to both of their faces is enough tell them both the truth.
“But, then why did you act so uh, you know?” Will looks to the side.
Mike bumps his shoulder, still holding his hands and makes sure to look into his eyes as he says the next words.
“I lost a friend. I guess I started to care about her.” At Will’s hurt expression, Mike quickly corrects his phrasing. “As a friend though, a friend only! Besides, she doesn’t even know basic stuff. I think it would be, like, taking advantage of her.” Mike makes a face. He remembers Nancy overhearing Nancy talk on the phone to Barb about that. His dad was never gonna tell him, so he’s lucky to have learned it somewhere when he did. He still feels guilty for that kiss, knowing what he knows.
“Mike?” Said boy looks at Will and his heart almost stops. There are dried tears on his face and a question in his eyes still.
“I wouldn’t want to be anywhere but here, anyway.” He says softly, pulling Will closer and wrapping his arms around him tentatively. Will seems to accept this, so Mike leans his head on Will’s shoulder and then, with the silence of the house around them, he just breathes him in.
Will sits there, still and breathing shallowly. He’s too nervous to do anything, not wanting to make a mistake and have Mike move away.
It’s maybe thirty seconds before Mike chuckles and burrows closer to Will, gently stroking his back with a single finger. “I’m not made of glass, you know?”
Will seems to calm when he hears that and relaxes instantly. “S-sorry. Nervous.”
“Me too.” If Will could see the expression on Mike’s face as he say those words, he’d see the hopelessly lovesick look he wears.
Will, wearing his own lovelorn look, places his head atop of Mikes and his arms come around Mike in a hug-like fashion, then stay there.
It’s quiet inside Mike’s home. The only sound the boys can hear are their breathing and the muffled television upstairs. Will can feel Mike’s heartbeat against his side and he wonders if Mike can feel his. It’s a nice thought and it makes his heart feel all fluttery inside. There’s so much he’s yet to tell Mike, that he must know now but Will wants him to hear it too. He wants to-
“Can I kiss you?”
“I- Wha-?” Mike’s head shoots up and he stares wide and owlishly at Will.
“Um, a kiss?” Will’s losing his nerve, but he looks into Mike’s eyes and Mike doesn’t look disgusted. He looks amazed, like he’s surprised that Will would actually want to kiss him of all people.
“Y-yeah!” Mike catches himself and then says, calmer, “I mean, sure, okay.” But his eyes are still eager and Will can’t help but grin, even as his cheeks turn a dewy pink. It’s okay, Mike’s are the same color.
“I’ve never done this before.” Will confesses. It’s kind of daunting.
“I’ve never done this with someone that matters.” Mike whispers back as his face comes closer to Will’s own.
It makes Will’s heart hammer even faster. He feels almost like a grown adult and at the same time like he’s five years old again, meeting his best friend for the first time on those swings. His eyes are cracked open just the slightest bit ‘cause he figures you gotta be able to see which direction you’re going in, right? He thinks Mike probably looks beautiful this close up because he looks beautiful all the time, but he can’t see to well with his eyes squinted half open and half shut so he’ll half to check another time. Another time, wow.
His internal monologue seems to die as Mike’s lips graze his own, his eyes slipping shut fully and of their own accord. After five seconds it’s over but then Mike’s coming back in again. And again. And again. He doesn’t really know what he’s doing and Mike doesn’t seem to either, so he just tries to emulate what he’s seen in movies and from TV. It seems to be working, Mike and him pressing their lips together and rubbing them around slightly. It feels nice, at least. He’s grabbed onto the back of Mike’s suit sometime during their kissing and Mike’s bunched up the front of his in his hands.
They’re still softly kissing when the door to the basement opens and the clicking of heels starts down the steps.
“Shit.” Mike curses. They jump away from each other as quickly as they can, almost as if just burned.
“Boys!” Mrs. Wheeler rounds the corner and peeks her head down. She looks at them suspiciously for a few seconds then shakes her head fondly. “Boys, sort out your candy now! Will, your brother’s here to pick you up, sweetie.” She smiles, turning and heading back up the stairs.
“Yes ma’am!”
“Okay, mom!”
Mike looked put out as Will and he starts sorting through the candy and chocolate.
“Eugh, raisins.” Mike’s face scrunches up and he’s about to throw them in the trash can, but Will stops him.
“Wait, I’ll take them.”
“But you don’t like raisins either.”
“No, mom does.”
Mike’s eyebrows go up at that. “Dude, I’m seriously questioning your mom right now.”
Will just shrugs and smiles. “She eats them on her oatmeal.”
“Wow.”
When nothing else is said Will looked at Mike questioningly, still going through the candy pile. “Huh? What’s wrong?”
“It’s true.”
More silence.
“Mike, come on. What’s true?”
“You really are too good! How is this possible? That I could meet someone like you and you would think I’m worth anything is beyond me.” Mike’s tone is joking, but Will leans over and pecks his cheek anyway.
“Don’t you know how important you are, Mike? To the party? To me?” He leans in and just when Mike thinks for sure, they’re going to kiss again he smiles and pushes him back.
“Here.” In Will’s hand is a Baby Ruth. Mike looked at him questioningly.
“I dont-?” He wasn’t sure what was up.
“Kiss.” Oh. Oh, okay. Well, if it was an exchange Will wanted than he’d be happy to oblige.
“O-okay, yeah!” Wow, calm down, Mike.
Will just laughs slightly in return. Then, they’re coming closer and closer, but the sudden sound of footsteps on the wooden steps stop them in their tracks. They didn’t even hear the door open this time. Was it never shut? They can’t remember. Mike and Will back up until they’re at a safe distance from each other, then Will picks up his candy-filled bag.
Perfect timing, as Jonathan rounds the corner just then. His eyes are tired but his lips curve into a smile when he sees Will. He waves and nods his head at Mike too.
“Hey guys, you hit a lot of houses?”
They look at each other and remember the events that had taken place earlier. “Uh, it was pretty good. We decided to come back early though and just watch some Halloween movies.” Mike covers for Will.
“Oh, yeah? Not too scary?” Jonathan’s concern is palpable an honestly, Mike gets it.
“Uh, n-no. Funny ones mostly.” He’s blanking, shit, he’s blanking.
“Um, E.T and So-something Wicked This Way Comes?”
“Right. You guys okay? You’re kinda jumpy.”
Oh no. It’s all over. He knows and he’s gonna tell they’re mom, then Mrs. Wheeler’s gonna find out, oh God, Ted-
“Did you guys actually watch a scary movie? ‘Cause I won’t be mad. Will, I know you love them, an-”
Will sighs and looks over at Mike, who gives him a smile and a quick wink.
“Okay, yeah. We watched Cujo. It was really scary and ya know, we’ll probably both have nightmares now.” He looks back to Mike, who nods along.
“Okaaayy.” Jonathan draws the word out, still not sounding convinced, but whatever secrets they’re holding, it doesn’t seem they’re ready to give it up quite yet.
Will turns back to Mike and walks over to him. “Here.” He looks down and in Will’s hand is the Baby Ruth from earlier.
“But-” He looks at Jonathan standing on the foot of the steps and then back at Will. “Our deal.” He maybe puts too much emphasis on the words, but that’s neither here nor there.
Will grins. “It’s okay. You’ll make it up to me, won’t you Wheeler?”
It nearly short circuits Mike’s brain, but he manages to hug back when Will goes in for a hug.
“I’ll call you later on the walkie.” He promises.
“‘Kay.” Then Will’s out of Mike’s arm’s and moving up the stairs, shouting a ‘see ya’ behind him.
“Bye!” Mike yells back, then he plants himself on the couch with a doofy grin on his face.
~
"Hey, buddy?" Jonathan looks puzzled as he and Will make their way out to the car, having already said by to Mike's mom.
"Yeah?"
"You guys drink some Kool-aid or something? Have some kind of red candy?"
Jonathan can swear he sees Will's soul leave his body the moment he say it, the sheer terror on his face is enough to read and he feels like a fool. It doesn't take a genius to round up all the clues and know what they mean.
"Yeah! We had.. Skittles! It was skittles!" Will hurries through an answer and though it's hardly believable, Jonathan lets it go.
"Well, congrats." He ruffles Will's hair and the boy looks unsure.
"For what? Eating skittles?" He's incredulous.
"Uh, yeah. I haven't had any, but I hear they're pretty good." He says as they buckle their seat-belts and Jonathan starts the car.
That changes Will's mood instantly and he smiles. "Oh, I still have tons! You can have some of mine!"
"Oh. Thanks, bud."
Jonathan turns up the music on the radio, a song about someone who's in love, their heart is breaking, and for the first time Will can't relate to it.

Broken fingers || Byler Au
Tumblr media
I felt so compelled to this amazing prompt - please feel free to send in your own requests because personally I don’t have many ideas atm haha, I need a little help!! I am also a little rusty with my byler writing, so plz bare with me!! Thank you guys so much xx I love you all!!
Prompt: Do you do requests?? Cause I was thinking of a story where Lonnie comes over to the Byers residence in a drunk rage and slams the door on Will’s fingers breaking one of them. So he either goes to Mike’s or Mike comes over and they just cuddle and cry 😭😭😭
Warnings: violence, swearing (bigotry)
______
It had all been a blur in the beginning.
Pain did that, blurred your other 4 senses as your mind became foggy with the shooting of pain through your blood - like some type of rabid disease with no intention of stopping. The pain grasped to Will’s fragile frame, claws digging in with no surrender in sight.
He was sure they were broken, the way the bones sat pointed and tilted outwards in odd directions didn't look normal. But there hadn't been much the teen could do at the time then run away, blinded by haste and poker-hot pain. How Lonnie, his oh so lovely father, had gotten into his family's beloved house was beyond him, and the youngest Byers was lucky enough to walk in - alone - to a rather red faced and staggering man who had a bone to pick.
Will had been trying to close his bedroom door ( it was his natural reaction when anything threatened him - to go into his room and shut the door), but Lonnie had followed him, hitting multiple walls along the way. There was a squabble, and Will really wasn't the strongest of children.
The crunching of his fingers as the door sandwiched the violently made Will want to throw up.
Pain destoryed the next moments - he had cried out, Lonnie has backed off and left him finally, muttering about how his son was a faggot and so - and all Will knew in that moment he needed to run. Run away, get to somewhere safe. But where was that? It was second nature, though, to answer that thought with one name.
Mike’s house.
The frail and pale boy’s heart shook at the idea. He had always felt safe in that cosy basement, curled up diligently beside his one and only crush - Mike Wheeler. It was close to hero worship at this point, he would blindly follow Mike to the end of time if it meant that Mike would give him a smile and let him hold his hand.
-
The bike ride over was what Will felt hell would feel like - he didn't trust himself to use one hand to ride - and he found himself hoping that Mike even had the smallest amount of knowledge on first aid. The sun had finally made the hill its grave, the crappy pee yellow street lights on the main roads the only guide he had.
He had to push through - to get to Mike, to feel safe, to feel loved.
The milenia it took to get to Mike’s house finally reached its end as he flung his bike to the ground unforgivingly in his pained haste. The noise of the bike meeting the grass made him cringe, but the reminder of his broken fingers only brought more pain.
He didn't know where his face began and his tears started as he knocked erratically on the Wheeler’s front door. Will didn't have to wait long, luckily, before the eccentric wooden door was heaved open by a familiar mop of dark brunette hair - those beautiful caramel eyes instantly made Will want to crumple in his arms and sob.
And that's what he did.
“Hey Will- Ahh! What's wrong!?” the spangly teenager squeaked awkwardly as Will flung himself into his arms with blatant disregard.
“Who's at the door Mike!?” “It's just Will! We’re going downstairs, don't bother us!” Mike didn't know what was wrong, but seeing Will cry so freely made his stomach drop and his heart stutter with fear.
What the fuck had happened?
Will sniffled and whimpered as they descended the stairs into their lair, the basement. Wills second home - besides castle Byers, but that was different - was already starting to have an effect on his nerves. Lonnie wasn't here, he wasn't going to get to him and sure as hell wasn't going to be breaking anymore of his ‘girly’ fingers.
“Are you going to tell my whats wrong?’ Mike asked, doing his best to sound sympathetic - of course he was, but the anxiety of not knowing things often made him sound snappy and impatient.
The smaller teen was unable to meet Mike’s eyes now, and wordlessly extended his hand that had been cradled to his chest. The fingers were distorted awkwardly - Will didn't want to look at them again or he felt like he was actually going to throw up or pass out. They were his fingers - his father had done this to him. His. Father.
“S-Shit!” Mike cursed loudly, eyes wide.
Without another word, he quickly darted off to the small toilet off the basement. He ripped the rickedy medicine cabinet open and quickly grabbed the first aid kit they used for emergencies. Fuck - this was more then a emergency. This was Will, his Will.
When he returned, Mike quickly guided the other teen towards their sofa. Will’s cheeks were red and blotchy, eyes slightly swollen as he sniffled and whined at the pain of his fingers. The taller teen broke out the bandages and something to make some splints from (his parents had forced him to take a first aid course - not that he would tell anyone that) and hesitantly inspected the 3 fingers.
“Who did this?” Mikes voice almost struck fear in Will.
“U-umm… L-lonnie..” He was too tired to be berraded by Mike until he finally told him - it was easier to give up now.
The next 10 minutes were in silent besides the quiet cries of Mike moving his bones to try and set them ( yes, he wasn't a doctor - but Will repeatedly told him they couldn't go. There were already too many issues surrounding his family as it was) and Mike muttering soft praises and encouragements to keep him conscious and as calm as possible.
“Here - this'll help the pain” Mike had fetched some water from upstairs - no mum, we don't need any food. yes mum, he's fine - and offered Will (who had finally stopped crying) some panadol to help.
Will sniffled again, taking the water and panadol before muttering a soft thank-you as Mike sat down beside him. The couch was warm - their bodies sat close together as Will was finally starting to calm down from the rush of emotions and adrenaline that ran through is small body. It was too much, and it had honestly tired him out.
“Your staying tonight, by the way. Before you say anything, my mum says its fine and she’ll call your mum. We can watch movies - your choice of course” Mike all but ordered his friend, standing again without a moment's notice to get some of the spare blankets and pillows from the corner of the room.
The smallest teen could only muster a nod - muttering something about the 2nd Star Wars movie - and found himself curling his knees into his chest. Will just wanted, no he need, some hugs. He needed to be held - loved, smothered until he was no longer the touch starved teen he was now.
Mike - who Will was sure was his guardian angel - finally settle back down on the couch and layered the cozy blankets around them along with some comfy pillows. It was like a mother making a nest for its young - and Will seemed all but oblivious to Mike’s reddening cheeks as he slipped into the warmth besides him, their sides touching with soft zaps of passionate electricity.
“C-can…” Wil stuttered, capturing Mike's undivided attention “Can we hug?” If Will could get and redder they would never know, but the question honestly made him want the floor to open up and swallow him whole.
It was silent for a moment before Mike stuttered out a small “Y-yea,” before wrapping his spindily limbs arounder Wills slightly shaking frame and holding him close.
Will was in euphoria.
As the movie started, Will felt the panadol slowly starting to kick in - seeping into his bloodstream and numbing the throbbing pain within his fingers. The small teen slowly found himself leaning his head on Mike’s shoulder, eyes drooping as he focused on Mike’s radiating warmth and the small circles he rubbed on Will’s upper arm.
“I won't let anyone ever hurt you again, Will. Never” Mike promised Will with sheer determination in his voice as the youngest finally slipped off into sleep - finally feeling safe and secure wrapped in blankets, in the arms of the person he loved most.

Mike settled down on the Wheeler’s couch on a cushion that had practically been shaped by him from his constant visits. He leaned his head against the back cushion and let out an attention-wanting groan. Will looked up from his readings and spared the other boy a quick glance.
“Did you have a good day at school?”
“Does it sound like it?” Mike rubbed at his face and then brought his hands back to tangle in his hair. “You are so lucky to be on break right now.”
“Do you want to talk about?”
“Not particularly,” Mike gruffed but turned his head when he heard Will shift himself closer and tuck himself into Mike’s side. “Hey, buttercup.”
Will snorted but leaned up a little to kiss Mike’s cheek. “Tell me about it. I wanna know and help you feel better. That’s what boyfriends do, right?”
“Yeah, that’s what good boyfriends do,” Mike grinned and took both of Will’s hands in his own to bring them up to his lips for a kiss. “Love you, baby.”
“Yeah, yeah, and you know I love you, too, but you’re not gonna escape explaining your day to me.” Green eyes darkened with warning but there was a shy lilt to his lips that betrayed the humor in his threat.
“Alright then, I’ll open up.” sighed Mike as he started playing with Will’s fingers. “It’s funny how you can be a senior in high school, one of the older kids, and just because you’re gay you get absolutely zero respect from anyone.”
Will detangled one of his hands from Mike’s and reached up to brush stray locks from his forehead. He leaned up to press a small kiss to the bared skin and cupped Mike’s face with a warm smile. Mike had been pretty open about his sexuality once El broke up with him and he entered high school. He didn’t want to be hiding anything after hurting so many people, El especially, trying to deny who he was. She was understanding, having broken things off anyway to focus more on her own self identity and knowing that Mike very well needed to do the same. It was only the following summer that Mike and Will has gotten together. Will was lucky enough to not live in Hawkins anymore so he never got the direct homophobia Mike often did in these parts.
Mike wasn’t ever jealous or angry about it, he knew Will faced his own issues in his town and they both could never escape it as long as they were out. Hell, they still couldn’t escape the bullying even as kids who barely even understood what the implications of being a boy who liked boys meant.
Still, Mike found himself often miffed that he had to face things alone. To his knowledge still, he was the only out kid at Hawkins High, and thus faced the most harrassment over his sexuality. His only friends really were Lucas, Dustin, and Max, as no one else wanted much to do with him. Even the teachers tried their best to avoid Mike at school, which both helped improve and destroy grades as various teachers either didn’t bother to grade his work or just gave him an A so they didn’t have to think about him.
“You’re almost done,” Will reminded him softly. “You’re almost free of Hawkins. Then you can leave this shitty town and their shitty people and live the life you want to have.”
“The life I want to have is one right beside you.”
Will blushed and tilted his head down to take Mike’s top lips with his own in a kiss. “I wish I could keep those people away from you when you’re not at my side.”
Mike kissed back slowly, taking in the affection and letting it sooth the burns left by the insults he faced all day. The words usually didn’t tear at him, but whenever Will was in town to visit, the disgusting words and slurs started targeting Will, too, and that’s what mostly got under Mike’s skin. He sighed and wrapped his arms around his boyfriend.
“As long as I have you, I can make it through. You’re worth it all, I hope you know that.”
Will rolled his eyes. “I was possessed by a literal demon when we were kids and you still stuck by my side. I think I know very well.”
“Good.” Mike grinned and tucked Will closer into his side with a hum. “You wanna tell me about what you were reading?”
“Oh this?” Will smirked and tossed the book aside to tangle his fingers in Mike’s hair. “I think I’d rather spend my time studying something else.”
