putting my major to use and using the principles of relative dating to try to piece together a timeline for mob psycho
reigens birthday (10/10) and meeting aliens (12/31-1/1) are the only events with solid dates but can be used as a basis to infer a lot of other dates if we work backwards
-tsubomi moving gets announced the day they get back from winter break and shes said to be moving in a month so the confession arc has to take place some time between january and february (based on how little time seems to pass between the announcement and mob's confession id say mid january)
-on winter break before they meet aliens (late decemeber) ritsu says dimple has been missing for a month, putting the broccoli arc in late november
-they had to have met the yokai hunter at least two weeks before the broccoli arc as mob says the school festival is in two weeks, putting the yokai fight in early-mid november
-since at least a bit of time passed between mob getting assigned his group and him stressing about the school festival being "only two weeks away" we can assume that the world domination arc (which happened an unspecified amount of time later) is either later october or early november. its unlikely to have been mid october as a significant amount of time seems to pass between reigens birthday and the press conference
-the seventh division leader says "the boss" (toichiro) will be coming to japan in a month which seems to put ritsus kidnapping and the rest of that arc in mid-late september
-if we use extracanonical birthday math teru and mob meeting has to take place some time after july 2nd because during ritsu and mezatos interview (which takes place shortly before it) she says hes 13 and before july 2nd he still would have been 12. given how much time seems to pass during ritsus joker arc id say late august or early september is a good suspected date for this, but we cant really rule out this happening earlier. the closer you get to the beginning the harder it gets to put dates on this stuff since it started as a gag comic
-mob met dimple one day before mezato interviewed ritsu and given that he doesnt come out of his room and go “happy birthday want to walk to school together” its still after july 2nd
-he joined the body improvement club pretty soon before this so at earliest the telepathy club arc could start in late june
-the first episode could happen literally any time after april (when the new school year starts) as the only reference to anything setting it in time is that hes a second year

❗ Before asking read this ❗
ok so i decided to do this little silly project thing
inspired by @couldtheycatchkira and this poll and the general power scaling bullshit. Can your blorbo beat the sayan popstar? Probably, but it is not my place to decide. This blog is just for fun, I dont like unironic powerscalings and stuff.
I will edit this post as the list goes on (i hope it does, at least) let the great fight begin!
Also I should probably mention the fact that I have never watched, read or consumed in any way any Dragon Ball anime, manga or affiliated media.
RULES: no real people please (this includes characters heavily linked to real people and characters obviously based on real people) no characters from sketchy places, please let's keep the controversy to a minimum. Keep to 1 character per ask, no photo needed but state the source if necessary. Any image used on the polls WILL look like it was compressed 1000 times. There will be NO ties, the fight is to the DEATH. Every character is at their prime.

i’ve been fucking around w a mob psycho 100 ageswap au. details under the cut
GENERAL PREMISE: mob & tome run a psychic business together, focus is on investigating supernatural phenomena. reigen is a shithead little kid who talked his way into becoming an employee, but they only really let him sweep the floors until he starts complaining, at which point he gets one (1) adventure per week.
MOB: because reigen wasn’t around to keep her from joining the telepathy club, she joined without protest or thought, but she and tome ended up getting along well enough that they became close friends. her egg cracked in high school, and she’s now a shy and withdrawn adult woman. doesn’t have as much of a sense of personal style, though if someone pays attention they might notice her tendency towards things with cute (& a little obnoxious) graphics. avoids using her psychic powers as much as possible because she never worked through her trauma regarding them, so every time she does use them they have a tendency to become really out of control. a pretty blunt sense of humor. she handles most of the “psychic” part of the job (so she does mind readings, future telling, and very basic exorcism), but most of this is “practice reading people”, something she still struggles with, and isn’t actually power based.
TOME: excitable and impulsive adult. worked a variety of shitty minimum wage cashier jobs until she snapped and begged mob to open the psychic business with her. her preference is field work, exploring haunted houses & investigating strange phenomena. has a strong (if occasionally incomprehensible) internet presence. a tendency to rope people into things without really asking if they’re okay with it, which she’s aware of and can occasionally feel guilty about. not a role model except for her zest for life. has never met aliens and desperately desperately wants to. still keeps in touch with the other telepathy club members, who have thrived in normal office jobs and don’t want to quit and join her shady ghost hunting business for some reason????
REIGEN: a middle schooler with a big mouth. unspeakably lonely, hates going home for some reason. has a tendency to bluff his way into situations and still miraculously bluff his way out. has a reputation in school as a loudmouth liar. very very good at reading people. wants to be special but has no clue how to accomplish this, and the concept of becoming an adult both frightens and bores him. wants to join the psychic business because he wants to become a fascinating and interesting person who people look up to, which flatters tome’s ego enough that she lets him “intern”. watches teru’s show and thinks he’s soooooo cool.
TERU: got in a fight with mob in middle school (again, mob didn’t have reigen to preach nonviolence so mob just kinda. wiped the floor with him lmao). teru holds the BIGGEST grudge about it and mob barely remembers it. nowadays, an incredibly popular tv psychic (haters will say its cgi) who is super popular with teenage girls and stay at home moms alike. because mob didn’t have her nonviolence rule, she wasn’t pushed to her breaking point and instead just one-hit KO’ed him, so he didn’t completely lose his dignity as a child, but he did take a hit to his ego and lost his middle school friends. he then rebuilt his following in high school, but also doesn’t really have friends, just lackeys.
RITSU: mob’s estranged brother. they never worked through their complexes regarding each other, so they grew apart and have barely spoken since they moved out of their parents’ place. now a successful office manager and utterly bored with life; going up the corporate ladder out of momentum if nothing else. allies with dimple out of boredom, and is actually more gung-ho about starting a cult than dimple is.
TOICHIROU: BABY TYRANT. runs salt middle school like it’s the fucking navy. aspirations of grandeur, wants to rule the world and frankly would do it tomorrow if he could. student council president, hand picked the rest of the student council (the rest of the super 5). uses psychic powers for intimidation
SERIZAWA: an anxious middle schooler who towers over everyone. his official title is “student council vice president”, his actual role is “hired muscle and toichirou’s yes-man” (yes-boy?). he considers the rest of the super 5 his friends, but doesn’t really know what friendship is. still has the umbrella. he and reigen end up becoming friends by accident, and reigen helps him break toichirou’s hold over him and basically enlists him into working for tome & mob.
DIMPLE: i’m gonna be real dimple is hard to ageswap because he’s like, 100 years old or whatever. so dimple is mostly unchanged, still running scams in an attempt to become god, which keeps not working out for him. this is his 100th attempt, and this time ritsu gets roped in - and might actually be better at running a cult than he is????
SHOU: toichirou’s HUMILIATING dad. maybe a little too lax about the whole “my son wants to rule the world” thing. also a powerful psychic, but only ever uses his powers to complete very mundane tasks, which toichirou views as a waste. unmarried, toichirou’s mom was a one-night-stand and has asked to be out of the picture, which shou is fine with.
MOGAMI: world weary at the age of 14. former golden child. discovered he was a powerful psychic very young, and used this power to help others. however, this quickly turned into him being consistently taken advantage of, and after a particularly bad incident, he became jaded and withdrawn. has some kind of history w dimple (disrupted one of his cults a year or two ago?). also watches teru’s show and thinks he’s a fucking hack

Recommendation Request Hours!!
Hey friends, I am on an anime kick and have finished or caught up with several shows, I want something new, and nothing else currently on my list fits the mood I'm in, so I invite you all to yell recommendations at me. A couple guidelines:
I'm in the mood for fantasy. High/alt world fantasy would be my preference, but I'll also take recs for modern/urban/period fantasy. I'm wary of isekai as a rule but I'll consider it
I do mean fantasy, not sci-fi. Obviously this is a very blurry line (and I like SF! just not the current mood) but please no mecha or otherwise primarily tech-based settings or premises
I'm looking for something action heavy -- big battles or otherwise exciting animation sequences. I want the eye candy and adrenaline.
I desperately do not want to watch anything in which the protagonist is a man who spends half his time thinking about getting into Literally Any Woman's pants. Romance is fine it's the specific brand of "any woman will do I'm just obsessed with getting laid" that I want to avoid
Swords are not a requirement but they are an automatic bonus
I'm putting a list of fantasy anime I've already watched or am watching under the cut to give you an idea of things I like (and so I don't get recs for things I've already seen) but I would love any recommendations y'all want to throw my way!! Thanks <3
Fantasy anime I've already seen/am watching:
Angel Beats! | Assassination Classroom | Attack on Titan | Baccano! | Beastars | Beyond the Boundary | Black Butler | Black Clover | Blood Blockade Battlefront | Blue Exorcist | BNA: Brand New Animal | Boku no Hero Academia | Bungou Stray Dogs | Death Note | Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba | Fate (Stay/Night, Unlimited Blade Works, Heaven's Feel, Zero, Case Files of El-Melloi, and Apocrypha) | Fruits Basket | Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood | Hunter x Hunter | Jibaku Shounen Hanako-kun | Jujutsu Kaisen | Kemono Jihen | Konosuba | Little Witch Academia | Lost Song | Magi | Mob Psycho 100 | Naruto | Noragami | One Punch Man | Parasyte | Persona (4&5) | The Promised Neverland | Puella Magi Madoka Magica | Re:Zero | The Seven Deadly Sins | Soul Eater | Tokyo Ghoul | Tower of God | Vanitas no Carte | Yona of the Dawn

Finally Following Through On Explaining That MP100 Lumity AU
Aight so a few days ago I promised to describe the basic layout for this Mob Psycho 100 Lumity AU I’ve been thinking about. This is that.
A marginal bit of context up front. You don’t need to have watched MP100 in order to understand any of the things I’m about to say, but I do recommend watching it anyway because it’s a wonderful show and an absolutely essential experience. Anyway, for those who haven’t watched MP100 this is all the context you need, for those who have you can just skip to the next paragraph. All y’all need to know is that MP100 features people called espers and they all have these vaguely defined "psychic powers." The actual abilities tied to these powers vary from person to person, some people just have telekinesis, some people have special moves and abilities they've trained, there are people with fire, people who are really fast, a dude who's psychically reinforced a plastic sword to be infinitely sharp and durable, just, loads of stuff. All espers have the ability to see spirits, which are, ya know, the spirits of people who have died, though the level at which their humanity is still intact varies. As a general rule the more powerful you were in life (particularly in the psychic capacity) the more powerful your spirit is. Aight now to the actual stuff.
We’re gonna start with the Blight family cause they were the first people I really got figured out for this thing so it’s just fitting.  The Blight family has had at least one powerful esper per generation as far back as anyone can remember. They're an overwhelming presence in the esper community of the city they live in, though most people without psychic powers aren't really aware of their existence, as the Blights have always viewed themselves as above regular humans. For this reason a long time ago the Blight family gathered with a group of other powerful esper families to found a school exclusively for young espers so their children would not have to associated with "the ungifted." In the time since the family has relinquished a good deal of its hold over the school, having deemed directly running it a waste of their resources, as long it sticks around they don't really care. That being said they still hold a large amount of authority in the community.
Edric and Emira are both naturally gifted espers who've never had trouble demonstrating their powers and the 'superiority over the rest of the humans' that their parents desired. The only setback they've faced is that they trained and developed their powers together a bit too much. See, Edric has trained his whole life in using his psychic powers to create projections aka illusions, and Emira has power-based abilities, in which she can give Edric's illusions the full force of their imagined attacks. Separately neither of them can make or do anything worthwhile but together they're top students. Fortunately they've been able to hide that drawback from everybody so far.
Amity, on the other hand, has never displayed any sign of even the potential for psychic powers. Her parents consider her to be both a failure to the entire family and their greatest embarrassment. That didn't stop them from enrolling her in a school exclusively for people with psychic powers though, cause they would much rather force Amity to find some way to lie and cheat around her entire life than reveal to the world they have a talentless daughter. They force Amity to become friends with children of their choosing, who will help her cover up her 'failure' and they assign Ed and Em to watch out for her and make sure she doesn't 'destroy the Blight family name.'
That’s about all the background for her thing, and I’ll get to what Luz is up to in a moment, but first I’m gonna make a momentary stop to talk about Willow (and kind of Gus). Willow is also an esper, though she honestly would rather not be. She enjoys the affinity with plants that she's built up over the years but she'd trade it in a heartbeat if it meant she would get to go back to normal school instead  of this fancy esper school with all these stuck up superpowered narcist teenagers who hate her. The only reason she even goes anymore is because she doesn't want to disappoint her parents, who were just so proud of her when her powers developed. Though one day she did ditch school to go visit a normal high school, just to see what it was like. There she met Gus, who happened to be the only member of a fanclub for espers, on account of everyone else in the school doesn't believe in espers and think he's crazy. Well, there was this other girl but... She’s not around anymore. Anyway so Willow befriends Gus and shows him some of her plant affinity thing and he thinks it's amazing, and Willow has a pretty terrible lack of people her age who think anything she does is remotely notable, much less amazing, so she and Gus develop a friendship pretty quickly.
Aight, now finally onto the main event, Luz and Lumity. So Spotlight on our girl Luz, who just so happens to be a spirit at the moment. I'm not sure what actually happened to her to, ya know, unalive her, but it sure did happen. Still, she managed to hold on to the world long enough to form as a spirit, just through sheer willpower and certainty that she wasn't done yet. Essentially she dies and starts to drift off but like right before everything fades to black she just like, jolts back up like 'hey no absolutely not I had dreams and a family and there is so much going on here that I am going to see and do and nobody can stop me.' And, as Luz do, she decides to focus on the positive bits of this instead.
See, cause back when she was alive our girl happened to be something of an esper enthusiast. And the thing about being a huge nerd about espers is that she managed to do some digging on the notable espers of the area. So, naturally, she found out about the Blight family. And she just so happened to find out about Amity specifically while she was at it, and perhaps she had discovered this information about a girl her age belonging to the most important esper family of the city and decided that this girl would be her rival in the field of becoming the best esper she could be, despite, admittedly, not knowing how to make the esper part even happen in the first place.
So, now with a spirit body not bound by the laws of physics and other such inconvenient matters, she searches out the Blight manor, intent on finding Amity, this whole preconceived notion in her head about how this is all going to go, some fanficitony plot unfolding in her imagination about how once they were bitter rivals but now Luz will have to convince her to work with her so she can achieve her dream still.
But when she gets to the manor she finds it warded against spirits. Not to be deterred, she waits outside the gates for Amity and latches onto her backpack, waiting for a good time to reveal herself to Amity, though she questions a bit why the girl doesn't see her in the first place. She hides with Amity all day, surviving a whole day in a school full of espers who could exorcise her with a flick of their finger, solely because she was with The Amity Blight, and anyone who noticed her energy just assumed Amity knew what she was doing and left her alone. The drawback to this, though, was that Luz kinda got directly smacked in the face by her preconceived notions of what Amity would be like, and while initially she had intended to reveal herself to Amity in order to ask for help, after seeing her be rude and pretentious to literally everyone all day she instead reveals herself to basically just yell at Amity and get really mad. Fortunately for Amity she's not an esper so she can't see spirits anyway.
Except the thing is. She's walking home by herself, like she always does, and then she starts to hear this whispering coming from nowhere, getting louder and louder, until eventually she just hears someone yell her name out of nowhere. See, Amity had never seen a spirit before, but also, a spirit had never gone out of its way to appear to her before. Essentially Luz accidentally reached out to her and lit the spark of her dormant psychic powers (everyone has at least some level of psychic powers sleeping within them it's kind of a whole thing). So Amity spends the entire time Luz is yelling at her just, staring open mouthed at this spirit that appeared for her out of nowhere after 14 years of hell. She doesn't even acknowledge any of the stuff Luz said about her, she was far too overwhelmed by just the fact that after being a failure her whole life she suddenly wasn't, at least, not entirely.
Luz eventually notices that she is getting far from the anticipated reaction and she quiets down. At that point the two talk things out and, while Luz is still seriously disappointed in the person Amity turned out to be, she doesn't have any better ideas of who to talk to, she kind of needs someone to be her communication piece to the real world at this point, and Amity finally has something she can use to actually do things with her 'psychic powers.' Cause they've been awakened now, yeah, but she quickly realizes she can see Luz and Only Luz. So the two of them begrudgingly work together, each kind of starting off mutually aware that they're just using the other for their own goals, and being perfectly okay with that.
So that's the general relationship dynamic between the two of them at the start, and eventually they get to know each other better. Amity stops viewing Luz as a spirit and starts learning more about the person she was before she died. (Amity just calls her "spirit" for like, at least the first week. The first time she uses Luz' name is a whole thing). Meanwhile Luz learns more about what Amity's life is like behind the scenes and everything that's happened to her.

HOUSTON, TX — May 20, 2021 — Sentai announced today that it acquired exclusive home video distribution rights to critically acclaimed Vinland Saga, WIT STUDIO’s Viking-inspired anime epic based on the award-winning manga of the same name. Originally a streaming-only release, Sentai is now readying Vinland Saga for home video and targeting a Summer 2021 release. Sentai is planning both collector and standard editions for this highly anticipated series.
Raised on tales of the legendary land of Vinland, where warmth and plenty abound, young Thorfinn dreams of leaving behind the cold climate of Iceland and venturing into the great unknown. But when Viking sails appear on the horizon, the young boy is conscripted into a life of violence and brutality at the hands of merciless Viking Askalaad. With nothing left to him save revenge, Thorfinn swears vengeance against the man who slew his family, plunging headlong into a sprawling, blood-soaked, coming-of-age epic that marches to the drums of war.
Vinland Saga is animated by WIT STUDIO (Attack on Titan, Great Pretender, The Ancient Magus’ Bride) and directed by Shuhei Yabuta (Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress: Director, Inuyashiki: CG Director, No Game, No Life: CG Director). Hiroshi Seko (Jujutsu Kaisen, Mob Psycho 100, Dorohedoro) provides the series’ script and series composition; Kenta Ihara (Ajin: Demi-Human, The Saga of Tanya the Evil, Cautious Hero: The Hero Is Overpowered but Overly Cautious) provides the series’ script and screenplay. Vinland Saga stars Yuto Uemura (Tsurune, Bungou Stray Dogs, Darling in the FranXX) as Thorfinn, Naoya Uchida as Askeladd (Dororo, Kaiji, Drifters), Kensho Ono (Tanaka-kun is Always Listless, Kuroko no Basket, Seraph of the End: Vampire Reign) as Canute, and Yumi Hara (Overlord, Trinity Seven, Brave Witches) as Anne.
The series was awarded Anime of the Year at the 6th Anime Trending Awards, with Gerald Rathkolb of Otaku USA stating, “[Vinland Saga] is one of those rare anime that could have appeal outside of the anime sphere because of its setting and focus on complex characters and the excellent political intrigue ever-present in the show. It comes with my highest recommendation.”

FEATURE: Will The Future Rule? Making Sense Of Chainsaw Man's Anime Adaptation
Tumblr media
Chainsaw Man is a comic where the hero rides on the back of a shark through a hurricane. It’s also a non-stop series of narrative rug-pulls exploring the psyche of a teenage boy struggling to grow up in a world where everything and everyone is expendable. Chainsaw Man is one of my favorite reading experiences of last year: I laughed, then cried, then yelled at the sheer audacity of what was happening on the page. A mash-up of Devilman, FLCL, and grindhouse schlock, it wormed its way into my heart in a way a comic has not in a while.
And I’m not alone: Look online and you will find Chainsaw Man animation reels and Chainsaw Man MADs. You’ll find these two excellent fan-made EDs, and this great (but spoilery!!)  write-up on The Comics Journal. You’ll find plenty of fan-art and folks shrieking 24/7 about Makima, Aki, and Power. As the joke goes, “Why animate Chainsaw Man when all of Chainsaw Man is animated already?” Well, joke’s on them. Do you hear that sound in the distance? The shriek of metal against metal? Chainsaw Man is getting an anime, folks.
youtube
Adapting Chainsaw Man is a tricky proposition. At first glance, the comic was practically made for it, with its cinematic layouts and spectacle. But the monster designs are complex, and the balance of tone and content is deceptively easy to spoil. Focus too much on the character drama and you miss the comic’s knowing stupidity. Gloss over Denji’s weakness and the story tips over into insufferable power fantasy — or depending on your tastes, an even more insufferable power fantasy. Adaptation is about interpretation, and about choice; rendering Denji’s story as literally as possible on the screen would be a fool’s errand, especially for a comic that so deeply loves movies.
The trailer MAPPA released is pre-animated, but that’s fine! As sakuga fanatic and anime industry expert Kevin Cirugeda has pointed out on Twitter, some of the best anime productions of all time started with pre-animated trailers. We don’t know release date details or its final look, but based on what we’ve been given, we can make educated guesses.
Tumblr media
What stood out immediately to me on the list of staff were two names: Kensuke Ushio and Kiyotaka Oshiyama. Ushio’s a former member of the great rock band LAMA who’s since composed for anime including Ping Pong the Animation and Liz and the Blue Bird. Oshiyama’s a genius, capable of everything from monster designs to directing and animating whole episodes of anime by himself (plus, he directed FLIP FLAPPERS!) When did these two folks last work together? On Masaaki Yuasa’s Devilman Crybaby, of course! Ushio composed the score, while Oshiyama was put in charge of devil designs and directed an episode as well. Now they’re back in the same positions, with Ushio writing the music and Oshiyama handling the monster designs.
The director of the series is Ryu Nakayama. Some might call him “inexperienced,” but this isn’t quite true: looking through Nakayama’s past work reveals some impressive credits ranging from directing and storyboarding an episode of Fate/Grand Order Absolute Demonic Front: Babylonia to handling GAMERS!’ entertaining opening sequence. Best of all, Ryu Nakayama collaborated with character designers Mai Yoneyama and 7ZEL to direct “raison d'etre,” an animated music video for singer-songwriter EVE. EVE’s YouTube channel of music videos is shockingly consistent, starring a murderer’s row of talented animators. “raison d’etre” is up there with the best of them, featuring striking color design and an ever-changing oneiric cityscape. I can’t say this early on if Nakayama will succeed in grappling with what is sure to be a challenging production, but the chance to see what one of EVE’s collaborators might make of a series like Chainsaw Man is a gift.
youtube
There’s another name on this list that’s just as important as Nakayama’s: Tatsuya Yoshihara, credited as the Action Director. You probably know Yoshihara from his work directing Black Clover. I know him from Muromi-san, a series with a truly deranged opening animation that begins with cute dancing mermaids and ends with shrieking heavy metal and the complete extinction of life on Earth. Yoshihara and Nakayama have collaborated in the past, most memorably for me on an episode of Yatterman Night. Nakayama contributed a significant amount of work to Black Clover, and now Yoshihara has his back on perhaps the most important project thus far of Nakayama’s career.
The remainder of the staff list is similarly loaded. Yusuke Takada is an art director who’s contributed great work to series like The Eccentric Family, where he worked directly with Chainsaw Man’s current color designer Naomi Nakano. Hiroshi Seko’s a scriptwriter credited on countless popular action series, such as the best action series of the past decade Mob Psycho 100 — but also on last year’s weird science fiction extravaganza DECA-DENCE! Technical director Makoto Nakazono acquitted himself well at Trigger on SSSS.Gridman and Little Witch Academia. Yohei Miyahara’s an accomplished photography and CG director. There really isn’t a weak link on this team — the folks producing the series clearly want a hit, and they’ve hired the talent to ensure that is what they will get.
Tumblr media
Will the Chainsaw Man anime be good? I’m personally very excited! But I don’t know. Anime is hard to make. Too much of it is made too quickly. Producers in the anime industry have been ramping up their efforts to recruit more foreign talent so as to fuel the industry machine, and Chainsaw Man’s production will likely result in the line between “anime fan” and “animator” becoming even muddier. This isn’t even including the factor of continued COVID-19 prevalence in the world. There are a lot of variables, and any one of them could make life difficult for folks on the Chainsaw Man team.
Here’s what I can say: I’ve watched that Chainsaw Man trailer an embarrassingly large number of times. I believe that Nakayama and his crew are capable of creating a worthy adaptation. I trust that MAPPA currently sees the series as their golden goose, regardless of where things stand in a year or two. It’s almost certain that this show is going to make or break many, many people’s careers. Until it airs, all I can hope is that those working on the project are given the time and resources they need to do their best work. After all — THE FUTURE RULES!
Are you a fan of Chainsaw Man? What’s your favorite EVE video? Do you think you could defeat Kobeni in Dance Dance Revolution? Let us know in the comments!

Pitch Me your thing!
HELLO HELLO MY SUNBEAMS. For most every category, there was an impressive turn-out for pitches, so I thought we’d utilize the weirdness of this year’s GIFTENING to give something new a try. The popular vote winner for each category will happen on the first day, but on the second, the winner will be chosen from YOUR PITCHES. Mostly those pitches will be to me. The exception is in Miscellaneous, where you’ll be pitching to my family, because what I want to do and what is most entertaining isn’t necessarily the same thing.
So! How will we do this thing? GLAD YOU ASKED. I’ll link you to a form in a minute with space for one pitch. Once you fill it out, you’ll be asked if you want to do another. There’s no limit to the number of pitches you can send in! But remember that if you submit multiple entries for the same category, you’ll basically be competing against yourself.
NOW WE’VE GOT SOME RULES FOR DOING THIS (which I mostly stole from Holligay, because I have no creativity this year). Please read them carefully! I’ll toss pitches that break any of these, and I’d rather your hard work not go to waste.
Pitch Me is open for your submissions from RIGHT NOW (22 December) through the very last day of this hellyear (31 December) at 11:59pm MT.
The thing you pitch must have come from what was nominated for THE GIFTENING 2020. (Full list of those nominations in every category below the cut on this post.)
Entries must be unsigned! I’m looking to chose based on the pitch alone, regardless of who submitted it.
The pitch itself must be 100 words or less. HAVE PITY ON ME I CAN ONLY CONSUME SO MUCH.
If you’d like to get some help, ideas, feedback, all that good stuff, the Discord is a FANTASTIC resource I encourage you to use.
HERE IS YOUR PITCH SUBMISSION LINK
And, as promised, below the cut you’ll find the list of all the nominees in every category you guys sent in this year. IT’S A LONG LIST HAVE FUN WITH THAT

Hey mx savrenim its me again and I'm wondering: how you maintain tension in a story with characters with future vision? Especially in a story with no guaranteed future, where seers can ensure the best possible future for themselves
oooooh v v good question, once more under the cut
so there are a lot lot LOT of ways to do this that all depend on the tone that you want your story to go for, and Imma reference a few pieces of media that do this in various ways, but this is pretty much a subset of the question “how do you maintain tension in your story when your character is very overpowered”
1. Just very realistically explore that “in theory able to do things perfectly” and “in practice able to do things perfectly” are very very different things.  Another Faust by Daniel Nayeri had pretty much someone with Seer-like capabilities (namely, the ability to loop back I thiiiink as far as they wanted in time?) that they could use to make sure they always said the right thing, got the right answers on tests, etc etc, and it just.... didn’t work out for them perfectly. Because perfect knowledge didn’t fix everything. If you know how every single play is going to work idk in a baseball game, that gives you an edge, but it doesn’t actually mean you win the game unless you are good enough at baseball to hit that ball and run those bases
In that case, the more effective the Seer wants to be, the more they have to actually train the skills that they care about, so that they can carry out the actions physically that lead to their ideal future. And building physical skills is hard and takes work and practice, and anything you have to work to get better at to reach a goal is the starting point of tension.
Also to continue the sports metaphor, having perfect knowledge of a baseball game and even being the best player in the world doesn’t guarantee you a win because you cannot play every single position, there are other people on the team who are going to be doing actions that at most can have secondhand versions of your knowledge. Trying to manage the human aspect leads to human error. So maybe there is tension because the Seer aggressively self-isolates so that Other People Will Not Fail Them and tension comes from interacting with other people they have extreme trust issues. Maybe the tension comes from them playing puppetmaster and trying to figure out which people they are willing to sacrifice for their goals, which people will fail them and which people they can and should hold onto, and from nobody really trusting them because everyone is well aware that the puppetmaster is willing to make sacrifices.
And finally -- just knowing the future doesn’t mean you can fix it. I don’t know about you, but even if I had perfect foreknowledge of the future, I would not be truly happy just personally thriving as idk rich and a famous mathematician and physicist and married to my fiance and maybe the books that I want to be published published and enough money to give to all my friends too and maybe can we have warp drives I want to go to space and inventing some solid if not immortality-tech then life-extension tech would be cool -- which, like, is everything I could personally wish for from life and more -- but in the world that we have? like, climate change SUCKS. fascism SUCKS. racism SUCKS. sexism and homophobia and poverty and class wars disguised as generational wars and all of the existing structures that reinforce all of these things SUCK. and even personally having perfect foreknowledge of the future enough to either start with or build up a bunch of political power and money, to try to change any of that would mean going against incredibly entrenched institutions that I honestly have no idea how effective one person could be at changing. Like if B*zos suddenly decided “wait let’s save the world and make a socialist utopia” do you actually think he would succeed? or even get very far? even applying every single resource he commands? or would he just.... lose a lot of his money and power trying to do that and then someone else becomes the richest person in the world who does want to maintain the system. because a lot of that power are things that do not exist, like stocks, it’s imaginary money that the moment you stop playing the game you get kicked out of the game and maybe you can make tiny changes but the game itself doesn’t stop
so baaaasically consider making your Seer a radical anarchist or at least someone who cares about tackling large-scale problems that one individual will never be able to solve, to play the “well if a very powerful individual had a single-minded focus on trying to fight these things could we at least get further than every single powerful person wanting to screw us over or just not caring?” game -- that creates tension because global problems can only be solved by global and communal actions, and one individual, no matter how perfectly they can see the future, cannot do that on their own
2. “Psychic powers don’t make you popular.” This is my obligatory “I just rewatched Mob Psycho 100 and am obsessed with it seriously consider watching it if you haven’t.” I know I keep bringing up MP100 but hear me out my favorite media is where the main character is stupidly overpowered so I don’t have to be stressed at all consuming it and MP100 maybe is the most touching but also well thought out and interestingly plotted version of that I’ve ever seen  But the basic premise of Mob Psycho 100 is that the main character, Mob, is a middle schooler with the most powerful psychic abilities in the world. The tension comes from: (1) Mob is not in total control over his powers and feels really really bad when he loses control and for example uses his powers against another person even in self-defense because that’s a Rule he made for himself that he really doesn’t want to cross ever. Which with a Seer, maybe you have a Seer that Cares Deeply About Other People’s Privacy, or who Cares Deeply About Having Real Relationships That They Do Not Manipulate, or who Cares Deeply About Their Achievements Being Their Own and so they don’t use their powers in everyday life out of moral considerations, except sometimes gods in stressful situations you just want everything to be okay so the tension of “do I fix this right now or is this crossing a line” drives your story. (2) because Mob isn’t using his powers in everyday life, while he is having these giant badass psychic battles with ghosts and evil psychics as a part-time job after school and yeah yeah you know he’s going to win, the tension and growth in the story comes from the gains that he is making in his personal life of, like, “oh he made a friend!!!!! oh he stood up for himself even though that’s really hard for him and he set a boundary!!!! oh he’s working really really hard towards his goal of being better at running!!!!! oh look he’s grown so much at episode 1 he didn’t talk to anyone his own age or have anything to do and now he’s doing things for himself!!!” Having your Seer take the ethics of not using seeing into the future to manipulate the people around them really really seriously, working very hard at tiny life things and then being a complete fucking badass that is putting down world-threatening threats as hobby that they kind of don’t view as that important in defining them as a person or defining their accomplishments or how they feel about themselves means that it doesn’t matter how overpowered they are in terms of their abilities, your audience will care and be invested in the tiny life accomplishments that they are working so hard to do on their own, and will be proud of their personal growth.
3. Blind Spots. Exactly what it sounds like, can your Seer really see everything? Perfectly? And if they do see everything do they know the exact effect that acting differently will cause? Or are they limited visions -- they only come at certain times, they only are about very specific things, the Seer cannot control when they happen, etc. The more specific and limited your visions are, the harder they have to actually work to figure out how to interpret them and best play the cards that they have, so maybe finding that perfect happy life isn’t actually all that easy.
Alternatively, your Seer can only see the natural future, what would happen if they do not change their actions. If they change their actions, they can’t re-glimpse the new version, so it’s up to their best guess as to whether or not their plans to make things better will actually make things better. You can create a shit-ton of tension there if only because Plans Never Go Perfectly. Honestly at this point you’re just writing a slightly different version of those “MC is a Super Genius” books that instead of them making good plans because they are a Super Genius, it is good plans because they can see the future, I stand by childhood me that the first three Artemis Fowl books are great and honestly I’m pretty sure the plot wouldn’t really change too much if you added “Artemis can see what future would happen if he didn’t take any actions to interfere” and it would just be another interesting trait that was a part of his planning process.
And even if your Seer can see re-glimpse the new version, they are human. They have only a finite amount of time, and a finite amount of brain space. You don’t need to make the rules of Seer powers be that “they can see all of spacetime and all possibilities of the past and future perfectly all the time.” They can miss things by not thinking something is important and looking in a different direction. You can build up tension around they can only look into the future, not the past, they missed something, and now they don’t know what they missed and what to target to fix it. Or play the finite amount of time bit very hard: if they see the effects of deciding one particular course of action, it takes [x] time for the vision to complete, then they need to try to see the effects of one other particular course of action, and they can only effectively run a handful of simulations -- or even hundreds or thousands, but the answer is still a finite number of dear gods is nature chaotic / the butterfly effect is built into every single physics equation that there is that describes the world -- so tension comes from even if they can check that a plan is good, they still have to come up with a plan to change the future, and can only come up with so many plans in the time that they have.
4. Existential Crisis. You made Seer powers “they can see all of spacetime and all possibilities of the past and future perfectly all the time.” idk I would find life terribly boring and have an existential crisis over that probably? of am I even human? does anything I do matter? does anyone else exist, really, since I can see and control every aspect of their lives? am I a god? how do I relate to anyone? how do I care about anything?
In this setup, your main character would not be the Seer, it would be a person or group of people who are either trying to Save The World or Accomplish Something Important or even Accomplish Something Selfish who spend the story trying to befriend the Seer and get their help goddamnit because the moment the Seer is on their side, they win. and then the tension comes from the Seer keeps refusing but is ~slowly opening their heart~, jaded older mentor figure adopts tiny adorable hopeful child is the found family JAM and then your main character finally decides they aren’t getting the help and goes off and does the incredibly dangerous thing alone and the Seer realizes too late that oh nooo my tiny son is in danger and at just the last moment decides fuck it and leaps back into the game to try to help and save them and oh both the glorious drama and all the best tropes all of them seriously if you write this book ping me I’ll read it I’m a sucker for jaded old loner adopts Naive Hopeful Hero Who Is Going To Save The World Even If It Kills Them and jaded old loner just spends the entire time going “oh no. oh no tiny child. oh gods I’m coming out of retirement aren’t I. tiny child please. please have you considered just being chill so that I don’t have to come out of retirement” and then just. the SATISFACTION. when they come in at just the right moment and the tension leading up to it when you didn’t know if they were going to or not. it’s poetry.
This can also pretty easily be done without the Seer having godlike powers, just pretty strong powers-- have them have made their life perfect, found it empty, and fallen into a depressive fugue then use the above plot for the same effect.
5. Make Them Your Villain. The final way of dealing with making tension and having an overpowered character is, uh..... it’s only no tension when your protagonist doesn’t need to struggle to reach their goals. if the antagonist is walking down easy street that only makes things all the more stressful because how do you beat that? and that is all of the tension in your book: figuring it out.
a subgenre of this is Seer v Seer: the best possible future for one Seer is not necessarily the best possible future for another Seer, so if you have multiple Seers, Seers clashing against other Seers that have the same powers which means their powers aren’t necessarily an advantage is a shit-ton of tension. That is.... pretty much the plot of trash novel? So I’d rather not go into detail about how I personally am doing it, but anytime people who have the same abilities fight, they’re on equal ground, you don’t know who is going to win, so boom, tension.
6. Seers are illegal/ kidnapped by the government the moment they are discovered to work for the government only/ targeted for kidnapping by all sorts of powerful groups, so your Seers need to aggressively hide their powers and the more they use them to make their life perfect, the more in danger they are; even if they can use their abilities to avoid ever being captured, they will be on the run their entire lives if they get found out.

tagged by @sugakun!! sorry this took so long, but ty for thinking of me!!
rules: it’s time to love yourselves! choose your 5 favorite works you created in the past year (fics, art, edits, etc.) and link them below to reflect on the amazing things you brought into the world. tag as many writers/artists/etc. as you want (fan or original) so we can spread the love and link each other to awesome works!
------
since i don’t post often, i’ll be including 2 edits from this year :)
1. nekoma high school gifset: i loved using the gradient textures, and really like the grainy/diamond texture on these gifs! i don’t really make gifs nowadays but this was so satisfying to finish
Tumblr media
2. kageyama’s birthday coloring: one of my most favorite edits i’ve ever done!! mini-story time: this coloring took me almost 2-3 years to finish (well, more like i was putting it off ^^’) and i’m so happy with the results! i’m always one for contrast and emphasis on the face, and am so proud of myself for making something i exactly envisioned.
Tumblr media
3. hinata’s smile over the years coloring: an absolute joy to make. i was smiling myself making this. it was even better that i got to make it for someone! this was right before i got a tablet and transitioned to coloring on it, aka the last time i redrew on a computer with a mouse. the brightness of the pastel colors and how they compliment each other and his face is just *chefs kiss*
Tumblr media
4. aran’s birthday coloring: my first coloring on the new tablet! it took some getting used to, so this isn’t as consistent as my others, but i love the bold colors, brightness in the eyes, and the intensity of the scenes! this was also my first time redrawing by hand - my other attempts at redraws were by mouse, and were an absolute struggle. on the other hand, cleaning scans on the tablet was also a learning curve so grass is always greener elsewhere :) aran’s also one of my faves so ofc i had to make something for him >:)
Tumblr media
5. hinata’s birthday coloring: @me: this one!!!! is so good!!! i am so proud of this one because i experimented a lot: using different base colors for contrast, shading in the hair, shading the sweat (lol), while still emphasizing on the face. i also love how these scenes mirror each other well and compliment the whole edit, so it makes it even more impactful. really, really, happy with how this turned out!

Watch ‘Til I Drop: BNA, MP100, Yorimoi, and Vinland Saga
Tumblr media
Noticing an open spot in my viewing schedule this season, I thought it would be a good time to check out some recent series that I missed but wanted to check out. I figured that I might have the time to complete an series or two this season, and went to Twitter for input on which anime I should try:
Tumblr media
You’ll notice that the vote was pretty close. I also received feedback commentary there and on Facebook that tilted me toward one anime or another. If anything, I was further away from deciding which series to watch after the poll than before! But it then occurred to me that I should just do what I always do: Try a series, and if it doesn’t catch my fancy, drop it. And so, that’s what I’m doing: I’ll be watching the top three vote getters from that poll—BNA, Mob Psycho 100, and A Place Further Than the Universe—along with returning to a series I stalled on, Vinland Saga (which crushed Golden Kamuy in a second poll I tweeted), and will drop any series that I lose interest in as I go along. If I know me, that means I’ll probably give up on at least two (maybe for a second time with Vinland Saga), but who knows?
And I’d love for you guys to join along in the adventure! After I watch four episodes, I’ll report back here and briefly let you know what I’m thinking. And we’ll start today with my thoughts on the opening episodes of the first three and episode ten of the latter.
Tumblr media
SURPRISE! Though the biggest surprise is at the end of the episode….
BNA, Episode 1
You know how one can have an appreciation for a film but not really enjoy it? Like, I appreciated The English Patient, but also agreed with Elaine Benes: “It sucked.” That’s how I feel about TRIGGER. Everything is so beautiful—SSSS.Gridman, Kill la Kill, Kiznaiver, DitF—but I have never completed a series from the studio. In all truth, I usually don’t even get past four or five episodes. Even Gurren Lagann, the show that launched the studio, wasn’t particularly great for me: I slept through most of the second half before hobbling to the finish line. But BNA might be the series that bucks the trend. The animation is of course incredibly engaging, with these beautiful shades of blue and magenta and gray, a style that recalls older anime series, and characters that move in brilliant ways. And the first episode was engaging enough, with a cool story of humans versus beasts that offers an easy immediate opportunity for social commentary. But most importantly, I like the two leads—and I haven’t felt strongly about any characters in a Trigger series since the pre-Trigger TTGL. That’s meaningful, because if you can get me with the characters, well, the rest just doesn’t matter as much.
Episode grade: B Likelihood for completion (1-5): 3.5
Tumblr media
I’m meh about the humor in either MP100 and OPM, and I think that’s a major barrier
Mob Psycho 100, Episode 1
This is a little bit of a cheat—I’ve seen the first episode of MP100 before…or at least I thought I had. And Crunchyroll indicates that I’ve actually seen two episodes. But I only remember about half of episode one—the entire second half, in which Mob and Reigen encounter the ghosts in the cave, is brand new to me. And I’m glad for that, because this series was tucked away in this category of “I’m supposed to like this series but I found it boring,” and now I realize I may have been way-off base. I’m not a big fan of One Punch Man, but I appreciate it and I found myself enjoying season two much more than season one, and that, too, gives me hope that this series, from the same mangaka, might eventually capture me. I know it’s already beloved by so many others, including several who have told me that it’s a better series than OPM. I’m looking forward to seeing it.
Episode grade: B- Likelihood for completion (1-5): 2 (The length is gonna keep this score low)
Tumblr media
Ah, so that’s the name of the book!
A Place Further Than the Universe, Episode 1
There’s a certain something about being 16 or 17 years old. You’re rapidly maturing and beginning to understand the reality of things (and wanting to enter adulthood and affect that reality), but are still childish enough to embrace the fantastic, and those two qualities combined—well that that could get you in trouble. I think I’d forgotten what it’s like to be that age, because despite being animated my Madhouse, I took one look at the synopsis and instead of thinking how fun I thought, this is stupid. But I started to sit up and take notice when the New York Times named it to a “best of” list, which is when I realized just how acclaimed the anime is. The first episode demonstrated why this might be so, carrying an immense charm while conveying that feeling I mentioned above, which is challenging to do as the show could easily fall into “stupid.” Most anime that sends kids on an adventure does it in another world with different rules (see Made in Abyss), but this series is determined to do it in the here and now—and judging by just the first episode, it looks like it might pull it off.
Episode grade: A Likelihood for completion (1-5): 4
Tumblr media
If you just stop and listen to the sounds in this series, they’re pretty hilarious: Lots of eh, er, EH!
Vinland Saga, Episode 10
Vinland Saga is a high quality series, from the storytelling to the animation. But I couldn’t take how dreary it all was—not so much the killing, but in the character development for Thorfinn. I know the manga is long and there’s much to tell, but man, when I dropped the series, I was almost a dozen episodes in and I still disliked every quality about the main character; there’s barely enough there to make me empathize with him, despite the loss he’s endured. Returning to the show reminded me of that, but having taken a considerable break, I was just able to enjoy the story in episode ten as I exercised my brain to try to remember what happened previously. But I can tell you this: I’m not going to be able to take another nine episodes of vengeful, one-liner (“I’m gonna kill you!”) Thorfinn. I may not be able to even take two more episodes of it: I need something to happen, something redemptive, and I need it now.
Episode grade: B- Likelihood for completion (1-5): 2
I’ll continue to revisit these shows with the aim of posting an article every time I watch four episodes, which right now means one episode of each series. But as I start dropping shows (if I do), I’ll be doubling up on some. I’m excited to see how this goes—and you can see if any of your favorites from among the four survives until the end!
=====
BNA can be streamed on Netflix, Mob Psycho 100 and A Place Further Than the Universe on Crunchyroll, and Vinland Saga on Amazon Prime.

The Invisibles #5
Tumblr media
It says "Crash the bus" on the back cover and I fucking get it so hard.
My inherent nihilism doesn't show often because, ultimately, I believe in a humanitarian morality based around kindness and compassion, built upon the foundational belief that nothing exists beyond our short lifespans and any act of wanton cruelty which makes any part of that short and challenging life more difficult for another person is the only true evil in the universe. But I feel the statement, "Crash the bus," deep down in my bones sometimes. Maybe it stems from a carefree and flirtatious relationship with suicidal ideation that allows me to embrace the idea of burning it all down. Most people want safety and comfort and will bargain with the devil to keep as much of that safety and comfort as possible, no matter how illusory it may be (because we have to face the fact that a good illusion may as well be reality). We're living in a Jenga tower where we refuse to restablilize the base even though it's teetering on just three misplaced blocks. And because of that, the amount of true reform that can be applied to this system is limited to what shapes can stand upon those three blocks. Most people are willing to work in that paradigm because they're afraid of starting completely over and losing their current safety and comfort, or because they think those three blocks are too sacred to remove. But imagine if you kicked out those three blocks, or, to sort of get back to the original analogy, crashed the bus into them and brought the whole tower down. Imagine the stable structure you could build if you started from a foundation that was built to support a better, kinder, more just system rather than trying to build that better system on a foundation not meant to support anything like it. Just because a structure has stood for over two hundred years doesn't mean it's still worth living in today, or maintaining its upkeep simply because we've always maintained its upkeep. I often dream of crashing the bus. And believe me, I don't fantasize about it because I think I'll survive the crash. I fantasize about it because I don't think I'll survive the ride. On the inside cover of this issue, there's a brief description of who and what The Invisibles are. "An organization dedicated to subversive activity in all its forms...the only rule of the organization is disobedience." In an earlier The Invisibles review, I believe I equated this organization to the Upright Citizens Brigade (specifically the show and not the comedy troupe). It's probably why I understood this comic book from page one. My intro or about page on Facebook has simply said this for however long I've been on the cursed site: "My only enemy is the status quo. My only friend is chaos" (that's stolen from the Upright Citizens Brigade intro, just to be clear). So I really can't remember why I stopped reading this comic book. It was right up my alley, even at twenty-three! I highly suspect I just lost track of it because I was a terribly disorganized comic book collector. I just realized King Mob is Grant Morrison's Mary Sue, isn't he? I had an image of him in my head but I just checked the Internet to makes sure he did look just like King Mob and, well, the Internet confirmed my suspicions. Also while scanning Morrison's Wikipedia entry, I noticed a short paragraph about Morriosn noting the similarities between The Invisibles and The Matrix. You know, like I noticed as well! Me! I noticed it too! Try to remember that these reviews are really just reviews about me and no the comic books I'm pretending to read but really just looking at the pictures.
Tumblr media
Morrison just puts the pieces of the puzzle on the table and you're supposed to put them together. But who does fucking puzzles?! Boring!
In my 30s, I planned on reading every holy book and writing copious amounts of commentary from a person who wasn't taught the dogma behind the words and was simply trying to understand the book with the words that were there. I made it about forty pages through Genesis with nearly three hundred pages of commentary and then the project just sort of petered out. I suppose I'm still alive so I can always restart this project. But sometimes life has a way of kicking you in the brain by distracting you and suddenly eighteen years have gone by and you're all, "What's the fucking point?" The Mahabharata was going to be one of those books. I read part of it in college but damned if I can remember any of it. Hell, I was even going to read Dianetics! I was going to save the Quran for last just in case I invoked the rage of some fundamentalist psycho for interpreting something in the book literally as opposed to the way it's been taught according to centuries of dogma (I was pretty sure I was going to offend Christians as well but Christian fundamentalists are mostly lazy, selfish bastards who wouldn't dare take any risks to disrupt their Earthly life for their spiritual beliefs). The few bits I've read from the Quran that line up with Genesis were far more interesting in the way they sort of held a dialogue with The Bible. Like when Abraham apparently went to sacrifice his only son in The Bible and the book claims it was Isaac. And yet the only time Abraham had an only son was before Isaac was born and his only son was Ishmael. So, you know, it sounds pretty much like The Bible is lying about what happened while the Quran is just telling it like it is (although I'm not sure the Quran ever names the child so that's another part of the mystery! Maybe it was Isaac and somehow Ishmael just didn't count as a true son for reasons. You know the reasons. Maid's sons don't count is the reason). After teaching about Indian puppetry, Morrison gives the reader a lengthy scene of Lord Byron and Percy Bysshe Shelley discussing their roles as poets in the betterment of the world. With all these conversations of dead artists who died young, I wonder if Grant Morrison is bitter that he's lived so long? Anyway, George and Percy have some interesting things to say but this isn't a synopsis but a review. Also I don't like to comment on things I don't understand, like intelligent dialogue and beautiful poetry and earnest compassion.
Tumblr media
Meanwhile, Jack Frost learns that the most important part of being an Invisible is being more paranoid than the next guy.
King Mob has to get back to England after his Indian puppet show and a visit to a Ganesh statue but he hates flying. So instead, he takes a shortcut through the future where the world has been ravaged by a great war and the Berlin Wall was rebuilt but bigger. Probably not to keep people on either side of it (the world seems mostly devastated) but probably just because the few fascist assholes still alive felt building a monument to being controlling dicks was the right thing to do to celebrate. Some mysterious guy without a face takes the face of some kids' father in a park somewhere at some point. It's hard to tell if this story has a place in time that can be considered the "now" being that King Mob is in a ravaged future and Byron and Shelley are in a long gone past and Jack Frost is in the present. Oh, that's probably the now! And the guy who stole the face of the other guy is probably in Jack's now time. King Mob returns to his Invisibles cell with information about their next mission. He also lets everybody know that Orlando is currently in London. I think it was Orlando who stole the face of the guy in the park. But that's just supposed to raise the tension because the Invisibles are going to leave their bodies behind in present day London as they time travel to the French Revolution. If we didn't know about Orlando, we would just be all, "Okay, cool! I guess they're time traveling and leaving their bodies so it'll be safe. Not because there are no threats from long-lived assassins without their own faces but because it's fucking time travel and I imagine they can return to their bodies the exact moment in which they left them!" Although the idea that the amount of time they spend in the past is equal to the amount of time their bodies sit unguarded makes a lot more sense than having somebody from the future tell Bill and Ted in his past that their clock is always ticking no matter where they are in time. I mean, it just doesn't make any sense! Especially when they break the rules later and will probably shit all over the time travel rules of their own established universe in the upcoming movie. Anyway, I like the idea that their spirits leave their bodies in the present in this time travel and that the spirits are away exactly as long as they spend in the past. That actually makes sense to me! The Invisibles #5 Rating: B+. Well, thanks a lot, twenty-three year old asshole me from the past! You just had to stop buying this comic book, didn't you?! And now I have to suffer not knowing what happens! Although I suppose you also suffered that and you seemed to have been fine. Aside from having no ambition and never finishing any writing projects and killing all of your dreams to play more video games. You know. Aside from that, you did just fine. Yeah. Real fine. Idiot.

Somebody asked me for some anime recs. I asked them what kind of genres they’re into but I’m not getting a reply, so here are just some general recommendations for good stuff to watch.
I assume they meant new anime so I’m only focusing on those.
Made in Abyss (2017) (warning for Body horror, violence and gore)
Tumblr media
The Abyss—a gaping chasm stretching down into the depths of the earth, filled with mysterious creatures and relics from a time long past. How did it come to be? What lies at the bottom? Countless brave individuals, known as Divers, have sought to solve these mysteries of the Abyss, fearlessly descending into its darkest realms. The best and bravest of the Divers, the White Whistles, are hailed as legends by those who remain on the surface.
Riko, daughter of the missing White Whistle Lyza the Annihilator, aspires to become like her mother and explore the furthest reaches of the Abyss. However, just a novice Red Whistle herself, she is only permitted to roam its most upper layer. Even so, Riko has a chance encounter with a mysterious robot with the appearance of an ordinary young boy. She comes to name him Reg, and he has no recollection of the events preceding his discovery. Certain that the technology to create Reg must come from deep within the Abyss, the two decide to venture forth into the chasm to recover his memories and see the bottom of the great pit with their own eyes. However, they know not of the harsh reality that is the true existence of the Abyss.
Pros:
Ghibli artists working on the backgrounds and environments
likeable characters
crushing atmosphere
incredible world building
Really compelling mysteries
Very emotional
Cons:
The manga its based on has a lot of lolicon bullshit. But the anime has doneits best to either remove or downplay those elements as childhood innocence rather than the author being a creep
Ends without clear answers as we have to wait for season 2
Not for you if you dislike violence or body horror
That Time I got Reincarnated as a Slime (2018)
Tumblr media
Thirty-seven-year-old Satoru Mikami is a typical corporate worker, who is perfectly content with his monotonous lifestyle in Tokyo. In the midst of a casual encounter with his colleague, a knife weilding maniac attacks them. Satoru, in shielding his co-worker and his co-worker’s new girlfriend, is fatally stabbed, and dies.
And then he wakes up again. But now, in the body of a blob of slime. In doing so, he acquires newfound skills—notably, the power to devour anything and mimic its appearance and abilities. He then stumbles upon the sealed Catastrophe-level monster "Storm Dragon" Veldora who had been sealed away for the past 300 years for devastating a town to ashes. Sympathetic to his predicament, Satoru befriends him, promising to assist in destroying the seal. In return, Verudora bestows upon him the name Rimuru Tempest to grant him divine protection.
With a goal now, the newly named Rimuru sets out to explore this fantasy world, stumbling into situations where other people need help, and since finding ways to live peacefully is much less hassle, Rimuru does his best to settle conflicts and help people to get along. Mostly because he’s got nothing better to do.
Pros:
Likeable, chilled out protagonist who acts and behaves like an adult
Not the average wish-fullfilment harem-in-disguise type stuff you expect from the average Isekai show
Characters focusing on trying to help each other and be kind without coming across as cheesy or unrealistic
Fun powers and “how are you gonna fix this mess?” situations
Cons:
occasional anime tiddy
Mob Psycho 100 (2016) (If you’ve seen season 1 already then watch season 2)
Tumblr media
An Eighth-grader Shigeo "Mob" Kageyama is possibly the most powerful psychic on earth. Which is the only thing he has going for him which, in his opinion, isn’t much. Due to his powers going crazy if he gets overwhelmed by his emotions, Mob has spent his life suppressing his feelings, both negative and positive. As a result, however, Mob is an extremely socially awkward and shy person who struggles to connect to people.
The story follows Mob as he tries to find ways to better himself as a person, aided by the fake psychic Reigen who both uses Mob’s real psychic powers to exorcise ghosts, but also uses his fake con-man skill of charming people and being a smooth talker to help people fix their problems rather than have them rely on a psychic for help. He also acts as a mentor to Mob, not on how to be a better psychic, but on how to mature into a good, capable person. Because according to Reigen “Having psychic powers is just a skill. Some people can run fast, some people can can sing well, some people are good at studying, some people are funny, and some people have psychic powers.”
Now if only the assortment of Cult leaders, Ghosts, Secret organizations and Powerful psychics trying to take over the world could leave him alone.
Pros:
A subversion of the “I must get stronger!” shounen story where the character is already the strongest and needs to focus on being a better person instead.
Probably the best animated show to come out in years
Good uplifting morals
A wacky off-beat art style and sense of humour
Genuinely complex and 3 dimensional characters who are likeable
Really relatable in many ways
Cons:
I can’t think of any tbh
Then we have anime I have on my “to watch” list and come highly recommended but I haven’t seen yet. But I want to recommend them anyway
A Place Further Than The Universe  (2018)
Tumblr media
a “Cute Girls Doing Cute Things” show.
Filled with an overwhelming sense of wonder for the world around her, Mari Tamaki has always dreamt of what lies beyond the reaches of the universe. However, despite harboring such large aspirations on the inside, her fear of the unknown and anxiety over her own possible limitations have always held her back from chasing them. But now, in her second year of high school, Mari is more determined than ever to not let any more of her youth go to waste. Still, her fear continues to prevent her from taking that ambitious step forward—that is, until she has a chance encounter with a girl who has grand dreams of her own. Spurred by her mother's disappearance, Shirase Kobuchizawa has been working hard to fund her trip to Antarctica. Despite facing doubt and ridicule from virtually everyone, Shirase is determined to embark on this expedition to search for her mother in a place further than the universe itself. Inspired by Shirase's resolve, Mari jumps at the chance to join her. Soon, their efforts attract the attention of the bubbly Hinata Miyake, who is eager to stand out, and Yuzuki Shiraishi, a polite girl from a high class background. Together, they set sail toward the frozen south.
The Promised Neverland (2019) (warning for violence and gore)
Tumblr media
Surrounded by a forest and a gated entrance, the Grace Field House is inhabited by orphans happily living together as one big family, looked after by their "Mama," Isabella. Although they are required to take tests daily, the children are free to spend their time as they see fit, usually playing outside, as long as they do not venture too far from the orphanage—a rule they are expected to follow no matter what. However, all good times must come to an end, as every few months, a child is adopted and sent to live with their new family... never to be heard from again. However, the three oldest siblings have their suspicions about what is actually happening at the orphanage, and they are about to discover the cruel fate that awaits the children living at Grace Field, including the twisted nature of their beloved Mama.
Zombieland Saga (2018)
Tumblr media
There’s a good chance you might have heard or seen this one floating around tumblr as its one of the really big, really popular anime to have come out that features a trans main character written and presented in a positive light.
Zombieland Saga is both a satirical parody of Idol anime, a complete embracing of what makes idol anime enjoyable, and a criticism of how the Idol industry treat women and young girls. A lot of the girls in the idol group are the complete opposite of what is considered a “good Idol” from one girl being trans, one girl having been an Oiran many many years ago (a historic proffession for women where they play instruments, perform tea ceremonies and entertain paying guests. As well as being very high class prostitutes) as well as debating and comparing the ideal of an Idol as they were seen in the 80s versus the modern interpretation.
Zombieland Saga is at both times the complete antithesis of everything an Idol anime should be, while also being one of the best examples of the genre at the same time. It also features really well written characters with emotional depth and arcs to them and boasts a lot of good humour to boot.
Yuru Camp△  (2018)
Tumblr media
Another “Cute Girls Doing Cute things” anime
While the perfect getaway for most girls her age might be a fancy vacation with their loved ones, Rin Shima's ideal way of spending her days off is camping alone at the base of Mount Fuji. From pitching her tent to gathering firewood, she has always done everything by herself, and has no plans of leaving her little solitary world. However, what starts off as one of Rin's usual camping sessions somehow ends up as a surprise get-together for two when the lost Nadeshiko Kagamihara is forced to take refuge at her campsite. Originally intending to see the picturesque view of Mount Fuji for herself, Nadeshiko's plans are disrupted when she ends up falling asleep partway to her destination. Alone and with no other choice, she seeks help from the only other person nearby. Despite their hasty introductions, the two girls nevertheless enjoy the chilly night together, eating ramen and conversing while the campfire keeps them warm. And even after Nadeshiko's sister finally picks her up later that night, both girls silently ponder the possibility of another camping trip together.
Rascal Does Not Dream of Bunny Girl Senpai (2018)
Tumblr media
You’re gonna look at this gif and that title and think this is some Light-Novel sexy fantasy wish fullfillment bullshit, but I absolutely assure you it’s not.
The rare and inexplicable Puberty Syndrome is thought of as a myth. It is a rare disease which only affects teenagers, and its symptoms are so supernatural that hardly anyone recognizes it as a legitimate occurrence. However, high school student Sakuta Azusagawa knows from personal experience that it is very much real, and happens to be quite prevalent in his school. Mai Sakurajima is a third-year high school student who gained fame in her youth as a child actress, but recently halted her promising career for reasons unknown to the public. With an air of unapproachability, she is well known throughout the school, but none dare interact with her—that is until Sakuta sees her wandering the library in a bunny girl costume. Despite the getup, no one seems to notice her, and after confronting her, he realizes that she is another victim of Puberty Syndrome. Mai’s unapproachability and air of not wanting to interact with people has manifested that it is now borderline impossible for people to physically notice her. Or in some cases see her at all. As Sakuta tries to help Mai through her predicament, his actions bring him into contact with more girls afflicted with the elusive disease.
Bunny Girl Senpai is an anime that deals with Societal pressures, especially as they apply to teenagers, as well as being a criticism of the Japanese mentality of “not rocking the boat” and in dutifully conforming and falling in line with what society dictates is “proper behavior”. It has the running theme that this mentality of just accepting the way things are and not doing anything to change it is unhealthy, and does more harm than good.
Dororo (2019) (warning for violence and Gore)
Tumblr media
A samurai lord has bartered away his newborn son's organs to forty-eight demons in exchange for dominance on the battlefield. Yet, the abandoned infant survives thanks to a medicine man who equips him with primitive prosthetics—lethal ones with which the wronged son will use to hunt down the multitude of demons to reclaim his body one piece at a time, before confronting his father. On his journeys the young hero encounters an orphan who claims to be the greatest thief in Japan.
An anime adaptation of one of Osamu Tezuka’s manga, but deciding to go for an updated, darker art style to match its mature tone.
Dororo is currently still airing but so far reviews are extremely high.
Anyway I hope those are enough to give you at least one new show to check out.

Premiere Impressions - Winter 2019
ZI still haven’t even finished 2018, but I knew that if I waited any longer I’d never get through any of this, so let’s dive right in!
Winter is usually a light season for me - I can’t spend all my time watching, and I’m much choosier about what I do watch than in other seasons. This is pretty much how I skipped a lot of deserving stuff last year - I was burnt out and totally skipped over Gakuen Babysitters, for example - and looking down the list...Only 29 full-length shows made their premiere this season, and of those, 8 are sequels, 9 if you include the Boogiepop remake. That’s pretty sparse these days, and it made it pretty easy to make a lot of early cuts, made up for by the fact that I’m gonna be spending a lot of it watching the shows from last season that are still going (of which there are a strangely high number).
Before I get too into this, though, I want to clarify my rules now that I’ve nailed them down and it’s a new year.
Lists will be divided into Winter, Spring, Summer, Fall, Multi (any show lasting more than thirteen episodes and ending this year) and Netflix (any show picked up by Netflix, because they don’t simulcast and because they have enough original titles now that it’s easiest to rank them against each other). For the sake of these bigger posts, “Multi” impressions will be placed in the masterpost for the season they premiered with, but they’ll be sectioned off.
That means that, for example, Sword Art Online Alicization will be ranked for 2019 even though it started last year. This makes more sense to me than waiting a whole year to write the 2018 wrap-up just for the sake of one show, and Forest of Piano 2 and Kakeguruixx won’t be appearing on this list, they’ll go on the Netflix one at the end of the year.
With that, the numbers!
28 shows premiered for simulcasting that should end this season and last 13 episodes or less.
8 shows were skipped entirely, for the following reasons:
* Date A Live III, Kemono Friends 2, B Project: Zeccho Emotion, BanG Dream Season 2, and Real Girl Season 2 because I didn’t watch/finish the previous seasons. Techincally W’z should be here too, but I wound up making a post about it.
* Wataten! because I don’t give attention to that crap.
* VIRTUALSAN LOOKING because I don’t understand why Crunchyroll even picked up a show that relies entirely on virtual youtubers in Japan when Americans might be familiar with Kizuna Ai.
* Bermuda Triangle because I forgot it existed right up until the end and had no indication that it was worth my time anyway.
10 shows were dropped after the first episode. In no particular order:
* The Price of Smiles, Meiji Tokyo Renka and Pastel Memories because the ending twist wasn’t as compelling as the show thought it was.
* W’z for being a passion project from a director and producer whose only talent is wasting the potential of their staff on this story concept.
* Magical Girl Spec-Ops Asuka for not having enough original ideas to prop up incredibly lackluster execution.
* Grimms Notes the Animation for not having the execution to make its original ideas work in the show’s favor. (see what I did there, they’re parallel)
* Domestic Girlfriend for giving me a melodrama without an interesting lead. (This is the one I’m most likely to give another chance, should I drop too many of the shows I picked up.)
* Dimension High School but only because I don’t want anyone to think I’m recommending it because it’s good or anything. Would still be perfect for a good drunk weeb night.
* Saint Seiya: Saintia Sho for being the worst-looking show of the season and staining the name of a long-standing franchise.
* Kemurikusa for proving that its director didn’t learn much from the success of his previous work, including how to make his shows look better.
9 shows were picked up after the first episode, 2 of which I was unsure of:
* Kaguya-sama: Love is War because I love the direction and characters but can see myself growing annoyed with the concept.
* Girly Air Force because my judgment of its quality will be based heavily on the female cast, and we didn’t get to see much of them in the first episode.
And 7 of which I was more confident in:
* Mob Psycho 100 II and The Morose Mononokean II for obvious reasons (they’re sequels to shows I enjoyed).
* The Magnificent Kotobuki for being the only decent-looking CG show of the season and providing an excellent (and lengthy) action sequence in the first episode that totally sold me on watching dogfights.
* Endro! for being incredibly charming and creating a fun fantasy world that doesn’t get bogged down in RPG details.
* My Roommate is a Cat for giving me some much-needed accuracy in the field of cat-based anime.
* The Quintessential Quintuplets for being a harem show that looked like it might have an interesting plot and non-excessive fanservice.
* The Promised Neverland for having a ton of creative verve put behind a show that follows the current trend of kid-based horror.
3 shows premiered that are already confirmed to have more than 13 episodes, 1 of which I dropped:
* The Rising of the Shield Hero for just being okay right up to the point that it gave me blinding, seething fury.
And 2 of which I picked up, 1 of which I was cautious of:
* Boogiepop and Others, for being interesting but possibly a little too slow on the burn and very lazily made.
And 1 I was much, much more confident in:
* Dororo for being a very cool-looking interpretation of the work of Osamu Tezuka and having the coolest fight scene out of any of these premieres.
MOST IMPRESSIVE PREMIERE: The Promised Neverland
Tumblr media
Maybe I’m predictable, but come on, when the first thing I can think to compare a show to is Made in Abyss, it’s doing something right. The Promised Neverland was probably the most-hyped show of Winter, and it gave us a premiere that demonstrated exactly why by tantalizing us with its mysterious setting before the big twist turned the atmosphere from “weirdly muted” to “complete horror”, and pulling off the only good bait and switch in a season that was fucking full of them.
Speaking of which...
WORST PREMIERE: The Rising of the Shield Hero
I’m not putting a GIF here because the first three pages of GIFs that Tumblr offered me for Shield Hero were all of Raphtalia, who appears to be the designated best girl of the season despite the show in question being easily the worst of the bunch and a strong contender for worst of the year already. My problem with this show is already known (and surprisingly, I only got one comment with the word “triggered” in it) and nothing besides Saintia Sho enraged me this much, but at least Saintia Sho just revealed itself to be poorly-made schlock instead of well-produced propaganda! Fuck this show.
And that’s it! The last lists for 2018 are coming soon, I promise, and I probably won’t be doing updated impressions this time around (because the season is already nearly over anyway), so stay tuned for my thoughts on the last few things I haven’t covered yet. Catch you guys soon.

Writing Challenge!!
Tumblr media
Writing challenges are always so fun to do, so I decided to make one myself for a change. It’s also almost (not really) my birthday and I want to celebrate!!
It’s that time of the year again where it is cold outside, the leaves are falling off the trees, you just want to curl up under a blanket with a cup of hot chocolate and watch a movie... Or is that just me?
Anyway, I love watching a good movie, or even a bad one sometimes.
This is why in this challenge, all prompts are quotes from movies!
Rules are pretty basic, I’m not fussy about anything.  (prompts > “Keep Reading”)
You don’t have to be following me, but it would be nice of you, of course, if you did
Reblog this post to join and/or spread the word
Send me an ask wherein you choose a prompt
Make sure you have a possible back-up if the said prompt is already taken
Preferably, I would like to have one story per prompt, but just in case anyone is really set on a prompt that has already been chosen, or if somehow by miracle every prompt is picked and more people want to join, each prompt will have two slots. (so one regular, one “emergency” slot)
All prompts are movie quotes, but your story doesn’t have to be based on the movie itself or have anything to do with the movie. Interpret the quote any way you want.
BE ORIGINAL!
BE CREATIVE!
HAVE FUN!
I would like to call myself a multifandom blog, but who am I kidding. I’m MARVEL’s bitch.
Write about any MARVEL character/ actor (+ the Hollands/Harrison) you want but
if you want to do a different fandom, you are more than welcome!
Just don’t forget to tell me in your prompt request who you will be writing for.
Fluff, angst, smut ... everything is allowed - just make sure to tag it.
NO UNDERAGE SMUT! Just don’t be gross, in general
No, first person, but other perspectives are good to go
Any length of writing is good, but if it is longer than 500 words, make sure to use the “Keep Reading” option.
so the story can be a one-shot, two shot, a series < including a part of a series you already have going on.
When you post it, make sure to tag me and use the tag:
#Z’s Movie Night Challenge
FOR AN EXTRA CHALLENGE (or if you just can’t pick): hmu with an ask telling me and I will pick for you! But do still mention who you will be writing for then.
Deadline is my birthday - December 18th!
I will be making a masterlist of all the submissions
I think that’s it. Any more question? DM me or ask

ideas i enjoy but am too sad, unmotivated, or intimidated to write:
• critical role/magnus archives crossover: one of the entities of fear is threatening the destruction of both universes by manipulating them to slowly crash into each other. the normally absent god of the story/narrative decides to personally intervene and send the m9 to the epicenter of the narrative over in the other universe to act as representatives and figure out who or what is causing this untold destruction. but their arrival does not escape the notice of the ceaseless watcher or any of the other entities, and all at once the m9 are pursued from every angle while they struggle to figure out the new ways their abilities are manifesting themselves in a reality with totally different rules. over at the magnus institute, jon sims and his group begin receiving big vibes from the watcher strongly insisting that they find and retrieve these visitors before anyone else can
• any magnus archives content at all, tbh
• critical role as a vague kind of spies are forever AU, based solely on my attempt to rewrite the lyrics of prisoner of my past to fit caleb’s backstory. and he’s singing it to beau and also doing this is now about caleb and beau awkwardly becoming friends (not romantic at all but theyre like ‘are we... friends? this is happening? or are you a dirty liar?’ which becomes more contentious but at the end they decide not to fight). i have not thought it through in the slightest beyond that
• a random little musical project i dont know how to progress with, which is about isolation and voices in the dark. my idea was to have the whole set and cast be nothing more than shadows to the audience until the very end, when a real connection is attempted. it takes place in a cave where the main character lives alone, but then a group of people visit much too close to their dwelling so they retreat further into the tunnels. theyre equal parts relieved and unsettled by the new position they find themselves in. and then someone falls into their cavern from above and disrupts their whole world. at the end the MC realizes they dont want to live as they have been anymore and accepts the intruders offer to meet the rest of the group from before, making the choice to come out of that comfort zone
• listen. i dont know what the hell my brain is doing anymore. i just had the thought ‘what if the 15 fears from the magnus archives had fursonas that you could befriend in animal crossing’ and i will never know peace again. im just mashing this shit together hoping that something interesting will happen. its mad science i tell you
• if you really think about it reigen from mob psycho 100 and shawn from psych are the same person. is that anything? my thoughts are just legos and i am merely 8 years old constructing intricate nonsense for my army of small lego men to wage war upon
