New record: I’ve been up for 20 minutes and I’ve already cried once! Do we think I’ll break the record for amount of times I’ve cried in a single birthday today as well?

Hi! Congrats on getting 1k! Is the event still ongoing? If so, can I request Asmo and comfort in a platonic way?
Like the type of comfort a best friend would give to their friend who's experiencing heartbreak? I just found out that my crush had a girlfriend last week and I just confessed to him 3 months ago. I'm still in shock. He's also a classmate that I can't help but interact with (due to some reasons) so I can't avoid him 😭. I just want someone who'll comfort me rn
It's his birthday today from where I live so I'll be requesting for him.
Thank you! And sorry for dumping my romance problem here
thank you!! and yes, its going until the 20th <3 i am so bad at setting deadlines so i picked a random date JHSG
i responded to your issue beneath the drabble, since it got a bit long C: i hope this offers you some comfort, i tried to keep it open ended for you just in case <3
ASMODEUS + COMFORT (1k event details)
~~~~~
Asmodeus hums a tune as he prances over to your room, a spring in his step and your favorite color of nail polish clutched in his hand. He squeals as quietly as he can and twirls around when he sees your door. The action makes him feel a little silly, but he doesn’t care.
“Oh, darling!” he calls, knocking on your door with a single knuckle.
He stands at your door for a few beats, bouncing on the balls of his feet as he waits for you to open your door and let him in.
You don’t.
Asmo’s smile falls, and immediately he’s worried. You didn’t say anything about going out with his brothers, did something happen? If he remembers correctly, this is usually when you’re having your downtime—
“Dear?” Asmo reaches for the doorknob, “I’m coming in, okay?”
When you still don’t say anything, he opens the door and steps inside.
Asmo breathes a sigh of relief when he sees a bundle of blankets on your bed and closes the distance between the two of you immediately.
“What’s wrong?” he asks, tentatively placing a hand on what he believes is your shoulder.
“Asmo...” he hears you murmur, and your cute face pops out of the mound of blankets but all he can see is how bloodshot your eyes are.
“What happened?!” Asmo gasps, the forgotten nail polish falling to the floor as he cups your face, “Oh, sweetheart...this won’t do. Come on, you can tell Asmo everything!”
And so you do, with Asmo holding you gently and reassuring you for as long as you need him
~~~~~
i hate to sound cliche but im so sorry :((( it really sucks when something like that happens and you can't avoid the person at all. i dont really have a good grasp of romance problems like this so i hope i dont sound insensitive but things will get better. getting over someone is really hard and it can take months, especially when you see them being happy with someone else.
i'm not going to tell you to "be happy for him" because i know how heart wrenching rejection can be. you can be sad. it's okay to be sad about him not being with you. BUT!!! someone out there will love to be yours, and you will find them. this one crush is not your entire life, nor is it a template for how your entire love life will go C: you'll be okay, i promise!!
i hope this makes you feel better, anon <3

TMI TMI TMI but it's funny.
Alright so the earliest I expected my period to come was on May 20th, 38 days after my last period. My tracker app predicted May 26th, 44 days after. For once I was actually hoping for an "early" or "on time" period because I had actual plans this last week and if I had to be on my period I wanted to either be done with my period or on the much-less-painful long tail end, instead of the really painful days 2 and 3.
So like starting a bit over a week ago I'm barely eating and part of it is hey, my parents have left so I have to not only deal with my own food but also have to feed the cats and dog before and after work and like, food is hard anyways. But like, food wasn't totally repulsive and when I did eat I was surprised by like, not wanting seconds when I already did the "hard" prep part. So a genuine lack of appetite. Probably means my period is here.
That was the 28th of May.
Friend from college who lives in a different state arrived that day. Spent the day hanging out with him and due to a) ongoing pandemic, b) my own food issues that arose in 2017, and c) my genuine lack of appetite, I don't eat much with him even though he would be fine with any concessions I need.
My parents came home on the evening of Wednesday the 1st. This meant the dog was no longer my responsibility and I could spend Thursday–Saturday at an AirBnB my friends family was renting instead of driving back and forth for two hours each day.
[TMI warning]
Thursday afternoon as we're holding hands he starts stroking my thumb and I become so wet I'm convinced I've started my period. Nope, just wetter than I've ever been in my life, even though I've been way hornier before. Same thing happens the next day, and I adjust to not being too paranoid that I'm bleeding on everything. Friday night there's some confessions of feelings brought on by my admittance that I have never been this cuddly before (he'd asked if holding hands is normal in girl friendships and I said like yeah, sometimes, depends on the girl because a) yes I do enjoy hand-holding platonically, b) I have been trying to convince this boy for nearly three years that friends enjoy listening to their friends talk about things they care about because apparently even though he has many friends they don't listen like I do??? meanwhile for me that's the best part of friends (me not actually being a girl was not something I had ever talked to him about before and might be a reason we won't move our relationship in a romantic direction, we'll see)).
So Saturday is day three of me soaking through my underpants, being grateful I'm wearing jeans, and this is all before the make-out in the park. I am no longer worried about my period. I have accepted my lack of appetite because not eating frees up so much time.
Today, Sunday. I am home. I have apparently forgotten my period was even supposed to come. I have put on white underwear even though I'm no longer limited to what I packed. I put on a white dress and purple leggings not to say goodbye to him at the airport (although I do that too) but because I have another friend's birthday to attend and she invited us to dress up. At like 7:30 in the morning there is no blood. I drive to the airport and say goodbye to my friend. Drive home. Watch some television. And when I use the restroom I find, oh there's blood everywhere, even though the first day of my period is typically slow enough that I can often catch it before it reaches my pants.
Bodies are wild. Hormones and brains are very powerful. My mom always told me that the human body, especially in our family, really wants to be pregnant/impregnate people and that is why the calendar-planning method doesn't work, because the body will adjust. My body really said hey: here's a bunch of fluid that will make having sex so easy. We'll hold off on the blood for now! And then after three days of that, probably as soon as I walked away from him at the airport, did it shut that down and commenced the shredding of the uterus.
I'll definitely talk about this less but this is up there with the time I got a new period-tracking app, long before treating my sleep disorder offered any sort of regularity, when my periods were 1–4 times a year, and then had two periods "immediately," once after the app sent a push notification saying my period was two days "late," the other a couple days after I got a notification that my period was supposed to start. I turned off push notifications for that app and never again were its predictions anywhere close to right (until after I started a wake-up medicine for my sleep disorders and developed my 40–44 day cycle).
That time my consecutive periods were (exactly?) a year apart, beginning on NYD, is probably another example of my brain telling my periods when to happen. Like oh! New year new lining!
I made this too long to be funny, didn't I? This blog also does duty as a health journal.

FACTS ABOUT JACKIE:
1. The name Jacqueline means, “May God Protect,” and is from French origin.
2. Growing up, she’s maintained a very close bond with her sister, Maddy considering that they are only a few months apart. Maddy often cites Jackie as her “mini me,” considering of their striking similarities.
3. Despite the fact that like her sister, she is very popular among her peers, she isn’t quite how others assume her to be. In fact, Jackie is very kind to those who she cares strongly for and isn’t shallow by any means despite what others may say.
4. It’s very clear that Jackie holds a strong hatred towards Nate with taking into consideration his abusive behavior towards her sister, she believes that Maddy can find (and will eventually do so) someone better that is more suited to her.
5. Despite how badly she wanted to deny this, Jackie knew that the various fallouts throughout their relationship wasn’t entirely Rue and her substance abuse issues fault but rather both as Jackie suffered with commitment issues.
6. Jackie tends to withhold a very energetic and life of the party personality which with this personality trait, everyone enjoys amongst other traits. Another trait however, is her flirtatiousness, mainly, the only person who hates this trait of hers is on-again, off-again girlfriend, Rue especially at times when they are broken up as she gets jealous seeing her flirting and moving on with someone else.
7. Rue believes that she and Jackie are soulmates. She has also told her, personally a few times. Considering, she’s very in love with Jackie and has been since their friendship turned into a romantic relationship.
8. Despite their tumultuous relationship, Jackie and Rue have remained close friends throughout it. In fact, at times in need of comfort, Rue would call Jackie for them to talk as Rue sees Jackie as among the ones who had loved her regardless of her flaws, has never judged and only wanted the best for her like others such as Leslie and Gia.
9. Jackie is the type of person who likes to keep her feelings, emotions and any further heartache bottled up and likes to pretend like a particular heartache didn’t affect her as badly as it did as she doesn’t see herself being very vulnerable.
10. Both Leslie, Robert and Gia love Jackie and approve of the relationship she and Rue share. They view Jackie as a very kind person and someone who is a very strong influence on Rue especially since she’s always been there for Rue despite the highs and lows in their relationship.
11. Although she identifies as bisexual, Jackie mentioned that it doesn’t matter when it comes to gender regarding a relationship whether romantic or sexual as she likes a person based on their personality and interests rather than their gender identity.
12. Like her sister, Maddy and close friend, Cassie, she is a part of the cheerleading squad at their shared high school, East Highland.
13. In spite of her popularity as well as life of the party personality, Jackie doesn’t see herself as much of a partygoer like her older sister, Maddy. In fact, most times, she attends the parties in both, Maddy, her friends and Rue’s convincing.

Top 10 Public Health Triumphs of the 20th Century (in the USA)
Have you ever gotten stuck in an elevator with me? Because let me tell you, it would be a good time. We would talk about all kinds of fun stuff, like this top 10 list of awesome public health things.
A lot of people think of “Public Health” as a new field, but its been around for a long while, and it actually has a lot of power when it comes to law and people’s behaviors. This list was compiled by UC Berkley based on information from the CDC and Johns Hopkins, and is pretty interesting. I even put pictures in to keep it lively!
Promise.
1. Vaccine (and Vaccine Mandates)
Even if you personally have never been vaccinated, there’s a good chance a vaccine has saved your life. There are currently 17 vaccine-preventable diseases that are targeted by US vaccination policy. Studies say that every year, 42,000 people are born (annual cohort) who won’t die of vaccine-preventable illness. And that’s not even looking at the 20 million cases of illness that straight up won’t occur in that same annual birth cohort because of vaccines. Check out this handy before-and-after chart from the Association for Ohio Health Commissioners:
Tumblr media
For those of you more monetarily-minded, the use of vaccines saves each annual cohort $14 billion in direct healthcare costs, and $69 billion in lost work and other societal costs.
2. Motor Vehicle Safety
Cars and other motor vehicles have been a massive technological advancement in the last century. Unfortunately, crashing those motor vehicles into each other also causes a lot of death.
But don’t fret! Even though we travel more than 10 times the number of total miles yearly in motor vehicles that our 1920′s counterparts did, we’ve seen a dramatic decrease in death rate. In 1925, for example, 18 people would die per 100 million vehicle miles traveled (VMT). In 1997, that number was down to 1.7 people per 100 mil VMT.
How did we do this? Those fuddy-duddies over at the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration figured out they could use epidemiology to track causes of traffic death, and came up with some cool interventions. These included things we take for granted today, including speed limits, road improvements (reflectors, breakaway signs, etc..), DUI laws, and vehicle improvements (seatbelts, airbags, head rests, etc...).
3. Workplace Safety
Tumblr media
In 1913, 67 workers out of 100,000 died in workplace accidents. By 1997, that had dropped to only 4 per 100,000. While some of this is simply that people moved to less dangerous work (heart disease from sitting at a desk for 30 years is not counted), some really does have to do with increased safety measures on the job site. Some workplaces are inherently dangerous- Loggers, fisherpeople, and aircraft pilots among the most likely to die today as a result of their work. Even the most dangerous industry today, logging, with about 135.9 worker deaths per 100,000, doesn’t even touch one of the most dangerous jobs of 1911- mining, at 329 deaths per 100,000.
This decrease in workplace deaths comes from a variety of interventions. In the later part of the century, organizations like OSHA, NIOSH, MSHA, and USBM began to study workplace practices, publish standards, and inspect workplaces for compliance. They required the use of safer equipment (better ventilation systems), safer workplace practices (like dust suppression and wearing hard hats and other PPE), safety training for employees (OSHA certification, first aid training), and specialized training for healthcare professionals who might see occupational injuries.
4. Sanitation and Hygiene (and Health Department Police Power)
Do you like food? Water? Do you like not getting sick because you consumed it? Do you like flushing a toilet? Do you like not worrying about whether people with known cases of active TB are running around in public? Me too!
I want to be very clear that these weren’t always things you could count on. In fact, about 33% of deaths (of which, 40% were children under 5) in the US in the early 1900s could be traced to poor sanitation and lack of outbreak investigation and control. Today, that number is down to less than 4.5% (and that’s including HIV as an ongoing pandemic).
You may not be aware of this, but your local health department has a staggering amount of both legislative and judicial “police power.” For one thing, they are a separate entity from local government (under the health commissioner), and can therefore make their own decisions, even if the mayor orders otherwise.
They can...
Decide which restaurants, schools, businesses, and childcare centers are meeting health safety standards and therefore can stay open
Decide what the vaccination requirements for entrance to the schools and certain other public places are (and why you might have to wear a mask at work during flu season if you’re a medical professional who hasn’t gotten a flu shot)
Mandate the construction of public health infrastructure like sewer lines
Enter private property for reasonable suspicion (of a potential threat to public health)
Subpoena medical records
Issue mandatory quarantine, isolation, and vaccination orders
Detain people under police guard in a home or hospital if they have a significant communicable disease like active TB, meningitis, or ebola and are trying to escape (called a Code Brown in my area... thats a terrible name tho).
This is a really good thing. It allows the health department to do things that decrease the number of deaths from spoiled food and poor food handling procedures, as well as chlorinate your drinking water so you don’t get cholera, and make sure other people making poor choices aren’t going to be a threat to you personally.
5. Reduction in Heart Disease and Stroke (recognition of the role of risk factor management in disease)
You might recall from the Vaccine part of this post that Heart Disease and Stroke are leading causes of death today, so the idea that we somehow significantly reduced these deaths may not immediately compute. That’s because of 2 main things. One, just a staggering number of people were dying from infectious disease back then. Like, unless your name is literally Steven Grant Rodgers you have no freaking clue how many people were just... dying. All the time. From stuff you just straight up don’t see today because of vaccines and sanitation. And two, the peak for heart disease and stroke deaths came in the 50′s (307.4 deaths out of 100,000 due to heart disease in 1950), long after those initial measurements were taken, and have since decreased by about 56% (134.6 deaths out of 100,000 in 1996).
This decrease came, mostly, from a recognition of risk factors as a way to manage and prevent disease. The idea that there were certain things that you could do or not do that would make you more or less likely to end up sick or dead was unheard of before this. Studies done by a man named Ancel Keys of populations’ dietary habits throughout the US and the famed Framingham Heart Study determined that high blood cholesterol, high blood pressure, smoking, and dietary factors played roles in the development of heart disease. This list was later expanded to include socioeconomic status, obesity, and physical inactivity.
Tumblr media
The recognition that modifying risk factors (like changing one’s diet, increasing physical activity level, and quitting smoking) could prevent morbidity and mortality, and that screening for blood pressure and cholesterol could allow disease to be managed early before it resulted in a heart attack, is credited with saving those lives.
6. Food Safety and Nutrition
Can you imagine a time before we knew what a vitamin was? Or even, that food was made up of fats, proteins, and carbohydrates? Or a time before we were well aware that poorly handled or packaged foods caused illnesses like typhoid fever, botulism, TB, and scarlet fever?
Well, there was one, and it was only the early part of last century. In 1940, 16% of the population had trichinosis, a disease of the muscles caused by eating under-cooked, infected pork. By 1996, only 38 cases were reported yearly. Similarly, typhoid fever occurred at a rate of about 100 per 100,000 in 1900, only to drop to a mere 1.7 per 100,000 by 1950. There are many, many more of these statistics, but I didn’t want to type them out.
Basically, we made food safer and healthier in many ways, including but not limited to:
Pasteurization of milk and other products
Use of prompt refrigeration
Hand washing before food prep/processing
Application of pesticides and insecticides
Control of application of pesticides and insecticides to prevent harm to humans and the environment
Improved animal husbandry and processing systems
Introduction of preservatives
Better antimicrobial solutions to sanitize food prep areas
Fortifying staple foods with vitamins and minerals to prevent nutritional deficiencies like rickets, beri-beri, and scurvy
Improved surveillance of food-borne disease outbreak
7. Maternal and Infant Mortality
Listen, the US hasn’t totally got this figured out compared to other countries, but we’ve gotten better over the last century.
Overall, in 1900, 100 children out of 1,000 live births died before their first birthday (that’s not a typo, folks, that’s 1 in 10) and the mothers of 8-9 out of 1,000 live births died in childbirth or infection afterward. At the same time in many US cities, up to 30% of infants would die before their first birthday, mostly due to infections. By 1996, that number had been reduced to less than 0.1 death out of 1,000.
Along with the decline of infectious and foodborne disease through improved sanitation, the introduction of vaccination schedules, antibiotics, oral rehydration therapies, and pasteurization greatly decreased both maternal and infant mortality.
Tumblr media
A lot of the problems for the mothers had to do with poor hygiene in those attending the birth (resulting in sepsis before the invention of antibiotics), excessive use of medical intervention (including operations and induction of labor) in labor, and bleeding. The invention of cleaner and safer operative deliveries, safer induction medications, and safer blood transfusions improved this considerably.
Its also worth mentioning that the availability of safer, legal abortion starting in the 1960s reduced mortality from sepsis after illegal abortions by 89%.
8. Family Planning
Following right along, family planning- the ability to literally plan how many children you want to have and when you want to have them, is also a major public health triumph.
In 1900, not a lot was known about conception and family planning, and what was known was actively suppressed. By 1912, through the work of Margaret Sanger and others, it became legal for healthcare providers to discuss contraception and family planning methods with married couples, including use of condoms, diaphragms, douches, and withdrawal methods. The rhythm method was introduced in 1928 with the understanding of the menstrual cycle and fertile period, and by 1933, the average family size had decreased from 3.5 to 2.3 children.
The number of children increased in the post-WW2 era to 3.7, but in 1960, two major breakthroughs- hormonal birth control and the IUD- further granted women the freedom to more effectively plan their childrearing. In 1965, it finally became (federally) legal for married couples to use birth control (again, not a typo, it really took that long).
Tumblr media
By 1994, a combined effort of hospitals, Planned Parenthood clinics, and health departments were preventing an estimated 534,000 unintended births, 632,000 abortions, and 165,000 miscarriages annually through the use and education of contraception.
9. Fluoridation of Drinking Water, Toothpaste, and Other Products
This is another controversial one (why are interventions that save lives, decrease disability, and improve health so controversial in the US? Nothing is perfect, but we have the research to show this stuff works. Do you at least see how frustrating this is to healthcare and public health peeps by now? Your entire life has been saved and improved by these measures in some way or another. Stop it.)
No one likes going to the dentist. And whether you like it or not, if you drink tap water from many places in the US, you’re passively avoiding doing so! Yes, I’m talking about the fluoride in your water.
Tumblr media
How did that fluoride get there? Well, its a much longer story than this, but, turns out, many water sources in the US already had fluoride in them- ranging from less than 1ppm to about 12ppm. A dentist named Frederick McKay noticed that people in Colorado Springs had an odd discoloration to their teeth. McKay found that there were other places in the US that had similar discolorations and hypothesized that there might be a connection to something in their drinking water. He had the water tested, and found that what these areas had in common were high levels of fluoride in their water. Another thing they had in common were lower rates of tooth decay. This sparked the possibility of controlling the amount of fluoride in drinking water to 1ppm- high enough to prevent cavities, but low enough so as not to cause the discoloration.
In communities where fluoride is added to drinking water, there are about 18% fewer cavities. This may not seem like a lot, but it results in a savings of up to $53 dollars per person per year in dental care, which is heavily skewed towards savings in lower-income communities. Compare this with an average cost of between $0.31 and $2.12 per person, per year to fluoridate the water, and you see significant savings. At least partially because of this (as well as increased access to dental care and the addition of fluoride to other things, like toothpaste), baby boomers are the first generation expected to reach their 60s with the majority of their teeth intact!
10. Recognition of Tobacco as a Health Hazard
Okay, folks, almost done! No one is happier than I, who has spent over 8 hours straight researching and writing this tumblr post. But I committed to it despite having (ironically public health) homework to do, and finished it shall be! Onward, Public Health!
Tumblr media
I don’t think many people would be surprised when presented with the fact that inhaling smoke is bad for humans. I think the CDC said it best when they typed “Smoking- once a socially accepted behavior- is the leading preventable cause of death and disability in the United States.”
I sh*t you not, in the US in 1963, the average PER CAPITA consumption of cigarettes was 4,345. That’s the equivalent slightly more than of half the total US population being pack-a-day smokers that year. It is now (in 2015 at least) about a quarter of that, at 1,078.
Tobacco use contributes to many cancers, heart disease, COPD, low birth weight, asthma and many other diseases, either because of how damaging it is to lungs and blood vessels when smoked (smoke particles less than 2.5 microns enter the blood stream and damage the vasculature, and therefore all tissues with blood vessels in them), or because of the effects of nicotine and other toxic substances on blood pressure, intrauterine growth retardation, and substance dependency.  Death by lung cancer was 4.9 deaths per 100,000 people in 1930 vs 75.6 per 100,000 in 1990.
By recognizing tobacco as a health hazard, public health and healthcare professionals were able to initiate widespread anti-tobacco education in schools, which has drastically reduced teen and young adult smoking rates. They could also restrict advertising of tobacco products, increase taxes on those products, and introduce counter-advertising campaigns. It also allows physicians and other healthcare workers to be a part of the smoking cessation process (if you smoke, you’ll be offered cessation resources at every doctors appointment and hospital visit). This from only 60 years ago when doctors actively encouraged smoking and were used in advertising.
Fortunately, with these campaigns and reduction in overall tobacco use, we are seeing a decrease in death rates from tobacco-related illnesses listed above. Indoor air quality laws and the prohibition of smoking on many college campuses have reduced public exposure to second-hand smoke, and also helped decrease smoking as a norm.
The jury’s still out on newer nicotine-containing products like vapes and juuls. They’re probably better for you than inhaling smoke, and nicotine by itself is not known to be cancer-causing, but they can contain other substances humans also probably shouldn’t be breathing. Like everything, we’ll know in about 50 years.

Saving Capitalism from Itself
Tumblr media
I used to think I was an anti-capitalist. From the Rage Against the Machine posters on my bedroom wall, the Che Guevara tattoo I almost bought myself for my 21st birthday, to my continued dislike of speculative finance and its exotic instruments; the notion that our lives should be in service of the market sat uneasily with me. But I also like nice things, and have for a decade and a half have made a career out of playing games with value and culture in the marketing services industry; so I have always wrestled with dissonance.
But it’s this dissonance that is at the heart of what makes us human, and what has made humans so successful. We possess both the urge to compete and to co-opt. Both of them were – are - vital to our success. It’s why despite the obvious bloody brutality and aching banality of warfare, there is still a certain glamour that comes with the whiff of cordite and cold steel. It’s why we still venerate and decorate our war heroes. It’s also why self-sacrifice is as often praised as victory. Its almost certainly why the most lucrative sports; those most watched, most written about, most fervently followed are team sports that combine both belonging and rivalry. Despite respectable audiences, its why there will never be any golf riots or tennis ‘Ultras’. It’s why the Olympics is the one time when individual sports are most likely to spark the collective imagination; when they are in the context of an ‘us’. Cooperation within competition.
In its most elemental form, capitalism is simply ‘the market’. The market is both competition and co-operation. As soon as humanity moved beyond basic subsistence, it was this mechanism of exchange that allowed fair co-operation and fair competition when it came to things; assets, resources, time. This meant division of labour, exchangeable surpluses, efforts that could be re-deployed elsewhere; in language, in literature, in philosophy and religion and the stories that allowed us to progress along our zig-zagging but ultimately upward trajectory.
But markets have never been without rules, because they were always defined by and designed for, specific socio-political goals. There are countless examples. The guilds of the mercantile age aiming to keep limits on certain professions, medieval zoning keeping theatres and brothels out of the City of London, tariffs to tilt the tables for key industries at countless points in the history of trade; consumer protection, regulations and child labour laws; they have all been part of the ongoing negotiation of the ‘moral limits of markets’. And these have always shifted, based on our times. I mean, we used to trade humans – including I would presume some of my forebears - until we decided that was ‘not cool’. The proscribed footprint of the market and its rules of engagement have constantly evolved to meet the needs of societies that they served.
This is why ‘Capitalism’ - with a capital C - is so problematic in the 21st Century. In its purest, Marxist, sense it is incredibly useful to understand the industrial capitalism of the 19th Century; Marx was always a better historian and analyst than theorist; As a framework for understanding a period of time when the mass populace was seen primarily as a labour force it is invaluable, but does it work if we project it backwards into pre-industrial mercantile capitalism of the 16th, or forward into the 20th Century’s consumption-driven society, where we the people were primarily seen as drivers of demand? The Market – capitalism – evolves according to the society which it serves.
The problem I had – have – is with the Neoliberal Capitalism that I grew up under, the only capitalism I have personally know; the one where we are all incentivised to be mini ‘Capitalists’, privileging competition over co-operation, in order to serve the market itself. The reason why the market, why capitalism, has become so unappealing for so many now is because this neoliberal market lacks any idealogical prefix. For better or for worse – and in the big scheme of things it has ultimately been for better – the market had always been a means serving a society’s ends, but now the market is now the ends and our socio-political lives are the means.
Without understanding the fundamental role that the market, in its most elemental sense serves; to mediate between our urge to compete and our need to co-operate, it has been allowed to run amok. Neoliberal Capitalism is placing brick on the accelerator and then jumping out of the car. The market is a tool and we are responsible as a society, as a polity for how it is used. There is no such thing as a ‘Capitalist Society’.
No wonder we are rebelling in all directions. In the face of increasing wealth and decreasing worth, empty economic growth and chasmic inequality we turn wherever we can see an alternative. Nationalism, nativism, economic Luddism. Orban, Corbyn, Bolsanaro. They all diagnose the problem. And more frighteningly, for those of us of the left, all of us who could loosely be termed progressives the Right may be closer to getting it right when it comes to providing a direction and a solution. Illiberal Capitalism at least begins to provide a purpose for the market, a direction. It makes the market once again the means to an ends. It’s just that this ends leads towards the border wall and the purge, the lynching, the internment camp, perhaps war. But it may succeed because is is a vision for shaping the market, not simply the desire to burn it down.
The issue with anti-capitalism in the 21st century is that it is fighting the previous war. The classic Marxist rhetoric is designed for overthrowing industrial capitalist world that no longer exists. The sentiment is admirable, but times have changed.
But there are similarities. Much like industrial capitalism was for the few, neoliberal capitalism has been for even fewer. Current upheavals may well represent its death spasm. It can’t come soon enough. We are in a time of flux, but we must not mistake the gross unfairness of this version of capitalism with a fundamental flaw with the market itself. This is the time to radically reimagine what the purpose of the market itself is. What are the rules of engagement? What are the behaviours we want to incentivise? Changing the world to be as we would wish it is Judo, not boxing; we must work with natural momentum not against it, we must work with the seemingly contradictory angels of our nature. And this does not mean I believe there is not a role for the state. But where we allow competition and where we do not should be decided with an eye firmly fixed on the future. Many experiments in privatisation have not worked because the incentives have been wrong. Railways and utilities should probably be renationalised, so they can be greened and subsidised with road charging nationwide; we subsidise the internal combustion engine by building highways, yet we privatise clean mass transit. A carbon tax on every item bought that reflects its true cost to the planet. Monetary policy that targets the Gini coefficient rather than GDP growth. I am not a policymaker, but these are the places I would start.
The path to this Damascene moment has been a long one for me. I am not against Capitalism. I am against this Capitalism.

Michael Jackson: The Facts
Alright y’all the Leaving Neverland documentary controversy was really starting to get to me. It’s so difficult knowing what to believe so I decided to do some research of my own, something I suggest everyone does before making a judgment based on one documentary. It doesn’t matter what I think but I believe the facts here speak for themselves so I’ve collated a big list of all the current evidence that’s been going around recently. Read it and then make up your mind. Feel free to add anything if you like. Thanks.
*****************
Action to sue James Safechuck SNR for almost $1 million was filed on the 26th April 2013. Stephanie Safechuck had shares. James Safechuck Snr was served on the 14th of May 2013. Wade Robson appeared on the Today show on the 16th May 2013. James Safechuck Jnr sees it and realizes he also had been abused.
Michael Jackson was not living in California when the abuse supposedly took place.
Wade Robson had to ask his mother over twenty questions about his first few nights with Michael Jackson because he couldn’t remember
For the court case in 2005, a psychological profile was performed on Michael Jackson. A forensic psychologist from the University of Cincinnati named Michael Borack evaluated many pedophiles and said that Michael did not fit the profile. Borack stated, ‘His eccentric behavior is not typical of most offenders’. He went on to say, ‘most offenders are normal people who could be your neighbours’, not anyone we would consider weird. He also stated that ‘most paedophiles will keep toys or other such appealing items around to lure children, but they do not usually play with the items themselves’. Michael thoroughly partook in playing and enjoying games and toys surrounding him for his own personal enjoyment.
Safechuck’s mother says in 2009 she danced when Michael Jackson died because she knew he’d never hurt another child, even though her son didn’t realise he was abused until 2013.
Wade Robson says they visited Neverland hundreds of times. But he had said in court that they only went to Neverland 14 times. Michael was there 4 times out of the 14.
Safechuck in his lawsuit claimed he was abused by Jackson in New York in 1989 after he performed at the Grammy’s. But the Grammy’s were in Los Angeles that year and Jackson didn’t perform at the Grammy’s in 1989.
Safechuck said in 1987 he spent Thanksgiving with Jackson at his home. But Jackson was in Australia doing the Bad tour at the time
Prior to his death Michael Jackson was investigated by the FBI for 13 years and found nothing. 72 officers and 50 FBI agents
Found innocent at 2 trials
Michael’s bodyguard, Bill Whitfield has defended him stating, ‘everyone that knows me knows that if I believed or knew MJ would harm a child I would not have worked for him. As his personal security, I would have known if something wasn’t cool and trust me I would’ve kicked his ass myself! As I protected him in life I will protect his honour in death #igotyourbacksir’.
James stated that ‘Michael didn’t want us spending any time with women and cut contact with me after puberty’. Photographic evidence exists of James, Michael and his then current wife Lisa Marie Presley with James holding an umbrella for Michael
Wade stated that ‘I was molested by Michael between ages 7 and 14’. Wade is now 36 so the abuse happened between 1989 and 1996. So, the abuse happened during the Jordie Chandler investigation and during Michael’s marriage to Lisa Marie Presley - with the FBI finding nothing.
Manipulated footage of Michael exists. Michael was being honoured at the Regent hotel and supposedly recorded a message for Wade wishing him a Happy Birthday with Michael saying, ‘hello Wade, today is your birthday’. The video at the Regent Hotel was recorded on the 20th February 1990 while Wade’s birthday is on the 7th of September with the original video being intended for Elizabeth Taylor.
Wade defended Michael 3 times: 1993, 2003 and 2009
Wade has changed his story 4 times. During the first, he stated that Michael threatened and manipulated him that they’ll go to jail if he said anything. The second was that Wade didn’t realise he’d been abused. The third was that Wade felt shame. And the fourth was that Wade always knew what Michael did but didn’t realise it was bad.
James also has changed his story twice. He said that Michael and his people were threatening him to keep quiet and James refused to testify but he and his mum knew he had been abused. The second time he said that he didn’t realise he had been abused until 2014.
Wade had also maintained a relationship with Michael Jackson’s niece, which wasn’t mentioned in the documentary, Brandi Jackson and cheated on her with Britney Spears to get ahead in the fame game.
Mike Smallcombe who wrote the 2016 book Making Michael: Inside the Career of Michael Jackson has accused James Safechuck of lying about his involvement in the 2005 trial. In the documentary, Safechuck said he refused to testify. However, Smallcombe stated that ‘in the documentary, Safechuck claims Jackson called him ‘near the end of the trial’ and asked him to testify on his behalf once again as he had done in 1993. Safechuck said he refused and that Jackson then got ‘really angry’ and threatened him. He repeated this claim under oath, in his ongoing lawsuit against the Jackson estate. However, it simply can’t be true. Very early on in the trial, the judge ruled that he would allow the jury to hear about five boys whom the prosecution claimed were sexually abused by Jackson’. Smallcombe claimed that Jordan Chandler, Brett Barnes, Jason Francia, and Macaulay Culkin were among the boys asked to testify in court, adding that the judge presiding over the case had said Safechuck’s evidence would not be permitted. ‘The judge came to this decision because nobody had ever claimed they had seen Safechuck being abused’. This meant Jackson could not have asked him to testify at any point, but particularly not months after he had been ruled out as a witness when the trial was near its end. Smallcombe also claimed that both Robson and Safechuck are in debt to Jackson’s estate after they tried to bring lawsuits against it in 2013 and 2014 respectively, both of which were thrown out. ‘Robson owes the estate almost $70,000 million dollars in court costs, and Safechuck owes the estate several thousand dollars as well. Both Robson and Safechuck should have been questioned about their motives for trying to get hundreds of millions of dollars in damages from the estate. These things should have been put to them in the documentary, or by journalists in their television interviews. We still need to challenge, especially when there are credibility issues’
In 2005 he was found not guilty in regards to allegations of sexual abuse of another 13-year-old Gavin Arvizo.
Wade Robson’s allegations of child sex abuse against Michael Jackson have reportedly been disproved by his own mother in historic court documents. Mike Smallcombe, a Michael Jackson biographer claims a testimony from Joy in 1993 shows some of Wade’s allegations in the documentary cannot be true. Wade claimed the abuse started when his family went to the Grand Canyon and he stayed behind with Jackson. But Smallcombe claims his mother Joy told a court in 1993 that Wade did not join them on the trip. He argues that Joy’s testimony under oath is proof that Wade has lied. Smallcombe said, ‘in the documentary, Wade Robson described how he and his then 10-year-old sister stayed in Jackson’s bedroom the first two nights they were ever at Neverland in January in 1990. Wade the claimed that his family left to go to the Grand Canyon, while he stayed behind with Jackson alone at Neverland for the next five days. Wade claimed it was then when he was first abused by Jackson, going into graphic detail about what had allegedly happened over the course of several nights. His mother, Joy Robson testified under oath in a deposition in 1993/ 1994 in relation to the Jordie Chandler case that Wade had actually gone with them on that trip to the Grand Canyon before the entire family returned to Neverland for the second time the following weekend. Joy Robson had no reason to lie about this; she openly admitted that Wade stayed with Jackson alone on other occasions. She could have said, ‘Wade stayed behind with Michael when we went away to the Grand Canyon between weekends’, it wouldn’t have made a difference. Her words in that deposition were ‘we went to the ranch for the first weekend, and then we left and went to the Grand Canyon and we toured. We came back to the ranch for the following weekend’. She was asked to elaborate on who had gone to the Grand Canyon, and she said ‘my family’. There was no mention of Wade staying behind. To confirm this, later on, revealed that the first time Wade stayed alone with Jackson at the ranch without her was actually in 1993. She said, ‘my son has never been to the ranch without me up until this year (1993)’. Smallcombe said that when testifying in defence of Jackson in 2005, more than a decade after his mother’s deposition, Wade also testified that the only time he had been at Neverland without his mother was sometime in 1992 or 1993 when Macaulay Culkin and Jordie Chandler was also there. Smallcombe said, ‘when giving evidence and asked if his sister had stayed in the bed with him ‘the entire them’ they were at Neverland on that first trip, Wade answered ‘yes’. Meaning he never stayed alone with Jackson during that trip. HIs mum corroborated that when giving evidence the following day’. Smallcombe said that Wade admitted that he ‘did not know’ whether what happened that night ‘came from (his) own recollection of it was told to (him) by someone else’. In one email his mother, he also asked her scores of questions about what had happened that first weekend at Neverland. That was when Wade was drafting a book about the alleged abuse, having to get the Cirque du Soleil job with the estate. All of this shows that Wade’s story about being abused for the first time, while the rest of his family had supposedly left the ranch to go the Grand Canyon, is false. Of course, while this doesn’t categorically rule out that Jackson abused Wade Robson, it does make you wonder if this extremely detailed and key story in the documentary has been fabricated’

"Good morning Jimmy, When I woke up early this morning my cat still hadn't come home. So I got dressed and went to go look for her. After 45-min and feeling into where she was, I stood at a spot quietly calling (as it still was really early) and suddenly she started meowing from somewhere and found her way to me. After a bit of saying hello, she led the way home. So, she's back and I'm happy ;) Thanks for the session and assistance yesterday. It helped a lot!" - Nicky

Why I Write...& ‘TIME: The Kalief Browder Story’ [Two Parts]
I’m often asked by many people what it is that I do. When I offer up that I’m a writer, what often follows is a question so typical that I can almost mouth it in sync with the inquirer; “oh wow that’s cool, what kind of stuff do you write about?”. At this point the conversation usually goes one of three ways: 1. If I am in the process of crafting a piece mid question, then I will often keep it quite short “all kinds of stuff mostly commentary”. 2. If I am reading or doing research for a piece I go into a bit more detail, (because I’m not a rude person and my Mama raised me right): “I run a blog called The Blacktivity and I write essays and critiques about everything from pop culture, to social issues, to politics”, and hopefully this answer is detailed enough that they’ll either have to engage (which is what I often hope) or take their non-engaging or nosey asses on somewhere. 3. If I have a bit more time on my hands I give a backdrop of what informs my writing (mostly my being Black in America for 31 years and counting, and my passion for journalistic, critical, and creative writing that I’ve had since growing up as a kid in Richmond, VA’s Gilpin Court Housing Projects) and where I intend on going as a proud member of the Black literati (“Niggarati” to some. And NO you probably shouldn’t say that if you’re white). Naturally since most Black folk spend most of their time around other Black folk, these questions are posed by people that look like me. For me this is great. After all, we are living in what I believe to be a renaissance of African American and other minority forms of cultural empowerment and thought and as members of a group maligned for centuries and counting, it’s good to know that we can be both fly and woke. It’s also good to know that there are many of us out there who still seek knowledge (despite claims to the contrary) whether through The Blacktivity or the millions of sources out in the ether. All of this gives me a warm and fuzzy feeling in my fingertips. But to be fair, while the much of my work is directed toward and about Black America and the ways in which we effect and are effected by politics, pop culture, and society, I write with welcoming arms and open ears. Because unlike a great deal of white America, I believe in genuine cultural exchange. I’m unabashedly and unapologetically African American/Black whether I’m around my own culture or others because our cultural history, legacy, and make up is just as rich and complex as anyone else’s. The narrative of our struggle is ongoing and deserves to be heard and spoken about with honesty, however brutal those truths may be. It is for this reason that some of my most elucidating conversations about what I do have also been with white folk. Like above, it typically starts the same way, “watcha got there?” or “watcha reading?”, or “watcha writing about?”. More times than none I take the questions with a grain of salt, as being just as curiosity based as the same inquiries from my Black counterparts. But, I’m also aware of the unique history in these United States of what educated or “educated looking” Black people tend to mean for some white people…” uppity”, “trouble-maker”, “too-quiet” or “know-it-all”. If you’re wondering if this is still “a thing” going into the second decade of the new millennium, oh yes, believe it. I have encountered this on several occasions and when the opportunity arises, I rarely miss the chance to give a little (or hella) schooling to such white folk. Why? Because it is to chagrin of many of these types that they find themselves living in a world where for as much privilege as they obviously have, that they find themselves increasingly surrounded by Black folks and other folks of color who are (and quite frankly have always been) the chief exporters of a unique and flavorful ‘American’ culture. As such, this leverage is now being used in conjunction with a more connected world to defy and debunk hegemony in ways and at speeds never before seen. To be sure these moments are nothing new. The fight for justice in with Blacks at the helm in the western world has always been a series of gains, which are then followed by rollbacks in the form of state sponsored terror, extralegal violence, as well as coded and recoded laws and policies (see; The Reconstruction Era and the following ‘Southern Redemption’). In all honesty, what’s currently unfolding in the world of not just U.S. politics, but geopolitics in the form of massive white and European nativist populist movements is but one more such historical reaction to an empowered and funky technicolored world. “The Blacktivity” I tell my ‘curious’ ones “is one among the many outlets advancing Black culture further through purposeful sometimes (hopefully) funny, and serious critique”. Do I get pushback? Of course, wouldn’t be fun without it, wouldn’t be America without it. I’ve gotten everything from the more “liberal”: “Keep in mind, there were other oppressed groups of people as well such as the Irish”. And of course, the world famous: “Well I’m not prejudiced, I have quite a few Black friends”. I’ve even gotten the self-righteously delusional: “Your people actually did better thanks to America”. Yes, this is indeed the world we live in and our politics of the current time are attempts at some form and fashion of reinforcing these narratives and bringing about that America that was once “great”. Luckily as stated before, we more connected than ever. Our voices now have more leverage than ever, and we are melding the world in a more realistic image of all our group and individual complexities. From Black Lives Matter and the hundreds of other organizations fighting for social justice, to independent and mainstream Black and Latino media outlets and blogs our stories are being told with force. And that’s why I do what I do. To comment, to critique from the inside and outside those forces of racial oppression, political chicanery, and pop culture foolishness that deserve it. But The Blacktivity also gives the big ups to the spaces where progress is being made, when politicians/political operatives and movements get it right. There is nothing but love from The Blacktivity when there is something so relevant in pop culture and media, so timely, that it can do nothing but spark the dialogue that leads to change. And right now, the most important Black story in media is “TIME: The Kalief Browder Story”.
TIME: The Kalief Browder story is a 6-part documentary series executive produced by none other than Shawn ‘Jay-Z’ Carter that first aired on Spike TV March 1st, 2017. It follows the tragic story of then 16-year-old Bronx native Kalief Browder who was arrested on trumped up charges of stealing a backpack from someone (he was arrested for no reason while walking home from a party) and was subsequently held for 3 years in New York’s infamous Riker’s Island while awaiting trial. Even more than the false accusations, the inability of his family to make the $3,000 bail also played the key role in Kalief’s subsequent incarceration. In the 3 years that Kalief Browder spent on Riker’s Island, he found himself the victim of numerous assaults by other inmates and sometimes by sheer necessity of survival, the perpetrator of assaults on inmates. Per usual in American prisons, Kalief also found himself on the receiving end of violent encounters with prison guards who in seeing the helplessness of an innocent Black 16-year-old in an adult prison felt it necessary “teach him a lesson”. Such “lessons” included “The Program”, a term coined by the inmates for newer arrivals to Riker’s, a gladiator like test to see if newbies could be or were willing to be broken. Kalief unwilling to allow such, was subjected to “The Program’s” punishment as they looked on. Or it also could mean being beaten by guards themselves (one video captures a group of guards’ bum rushing Kalief’s 8 x 8 cell reportedly beating, kicking, and stomping him). However, among the many atrocities of Kalief’s time on Riker’s Island one of the worst and most damaging was his being subjected to the mental torture of isolation.  Out of Kalief’s 3 years on Riker’s, 800 of them were spent in solitary confinement, remind you that this is all while he was awaiting trial, for “stealing a backpack”. Including isolation, Kalief was subjected to other tortures as well such as starvation and heat exhaustion during the summers when solitary cells rose to over 100 degrees in temperature and over time these tortures affected Kalief’s mental health. Despite eventually telling guards and other prison staff the “he wasn’t feeling right” and that he needed to see a psychiatrist, all of this was met with no response and more harassment. The teen’s first attempt in taking his life came at Riker’s where he made a cord with his bedsheets while correctional officers looked on in nonchalance. After being cut down by the officers, he was then repeatedly beaten. As you can imagine the cycle of beatings, tortures, isolation, waiting under Legal Aid caseloads, emotional duress, and rage of innocence continued for 3 years until eventually Kalief would be released 5 days before his 20th birthday, but the damage had already been done. Kalief’s extended stay at Riker’s was part and parcel due to his bravery at facing a criminal justice system in which 70% of the cases are closed by plea deals. Kalief refused. This was also the source of his angst, the knowledge that inherently the system is rigged against young Black men. After Kalief’s release he wouldn’t be the same. He was haunted by paranoia and social reclusiveness twice attempting suicide after his release and being admitted to a psychiatric ward at least three times. There was however a moment of resurrection for Kalief as he pursued and obtained his G.E.D. with a 3.5 grade point average and soon after enrolled in Bronx Community College as a part of the City University of New York’s Future Now program, which offers a college education for previously incarcerated youths.  However, after his fall semester Kalief dropped out due to a mental health relapse, but went back during his spring semester. He was attempting to make good of his like despite the hand that a racist system dealt. Kalief then took a job mentoring other G.E.D. students in math and one as a security guard until he was abruptly fired from one of his assignments at a psychiatric ward which he was sent to upon his release. Later at the behest of his defense attorney Paul V. Prestia he was connected to a job on Wall Street where he held a part-time flyer advertising job. In a statement regarding his time on Wall Street Kalief replied; “I see businessmen and businesswomen dressed in suits, I want to be successful, like them”. Kalief would go on to become an advocate and media presence on several issues ranging from criminal justice reform to mental health and along the way he would garner interviews with media outlets such as Vice, The Huffington Post, and The View. He was also met with support by celebrities like Jay-Z and Rosie O’Donnell. Kalief was private about these relationships however and found each subsequent interview about his experience harder to discuss and as time passed Kalief would sink further into relapse until on June 6, 2015 he would finally succumb to those demons created for him by American racism and take his own life by hanging himself. His last words to his mother a day before his death; “Ma, I can’t take it no more”.  The documentary follows Kalief and his mother’s fight for him up until the time of not only his death, but hers as well (Venida Browder died just a little over a year later October 14th 2016 due to complications from a heart attack). The series of vignettes and raw interviews with both Browders, including a host of insiders of this corrupt system and advocates for reform bring to bear the very truth that Kalief’s story is the story of Blacks and “criminal” “justice” in America. Because in fact, while Kalief’s story is tragic and as such has gained national attention, the system itself is archaic and insidiously methodical. There are millions of Kalief Browder’s whose story hasn’t been told but this tragic tale serves as a fill in for them. America is indeed a racist society whose ideals have yet to catch up with its reality, no amount of pomp and circumstance or flag waving changes that, and Kalief Browder’s story is another reminder. And as I watched this story in the way that wrenches the gut, I thought about the very fragility of Black life in this country. The millions of faces including my own that could at any moment replace Kalief’s in the line of succession in the violence upon Black bodies. I’m then also reminded about why it is that I write.

Listed: Matthew Golombisky
Tumblr media
Matthew Golombisky grew up in North Carolina, where he picked up the bass to play metal with his buddies and jazz in a couple high school bands. After college he moved around the US, playing upright and electric in countless bands and spending time in the Bay area, upstate New York, and New Orleans. In the Crescent City he bonded with his most enduring musical partner, drummer Quin Kirchner, with whom he has toured extensively as a duo and as the rhythm section for other bands. When Hurricane Katrina laid waste to the town they both eventually moved to Chicago.Both of them played with trombonists Jeff Albert and Jeb Bishop in the Lucky 7s, and Golombisky made strong connections with the city’s jazz scene. In 2007 cofounded Ears And Eyes Records, which has issued albums by notable current and former Chicagoans such as Bill MacKay, George Freeman, Caroline Davis, Chad Taylor, Charles Rumback and Matt Piet. He has toured the US with Zing! And NOMO and stage-managed at Pitchfork, but after traveling around South America he landed in Buenos Aires, Argentina, in 2013. There he plays and teaches music and is raising a family, but he sustains ongoing connections with his mates in North America. Golombisky has recently released two cassettes, Cuentos 1 & 2 and Cuentos 3,named after the Spanish word for short stories. Each volume is devoted to a group of musicians connected with one of Golombisky’s old homes, and the music that he composes for them combines the emotional expressiveness of mid-20thcentury modern jazz with the close engagement of chamber music.
Milli Vanilli, Girl You Know It’s True
youtube
Though as a kid, I grew up listening, per my parents, to a lot of Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Queen, The Who, CCR, Steppenwolf, Jethro Tull, Simon and Garfunkel, and David Bowie, the first cassette I ever bought with my own money was in the late 80s and it was Milli Vanilli’s. I was 9 or 10. How I came across their music I don’t remember, but probably from MTV. I remember on late night drives back home with my father from his auto body shop in his red 1986 V8 5-speed Z28 Camaro (with louvers on the back glass), which I bought from him as my car in 1998, we’d blast that cassette (as well as Herb Alpert and Fine Young Cannibals cassettes, what a mix, no?)! I have no idea how long this lasts, but it couldn’t have been long because when I learned Milli Vanilli was a total front and a lie, I went out into the boonies(woods), where we lived, in the middle of small-town North Carolina, and had a cassette-tape-burning session. I gathered some gasoline and matches and melted that tape to a little pile of plastic. It felt good and well-deserved. When my dad found out, he got incredibly upset (or so I’ve told the story as I remember… maybe one day I’ll confirm with him if it’s true if he’d even admit to being angry about my destroying myMilli Vanilli tape, I’m not sure). I guess the only reason I’d include this in Dusted’s “Listed” feature is that it was a profound experience of “create your own damn music!!”
Miles Davis, Volume 1
youtube
Me getting into jazz: All I knew of jazz for a few years was my playing bass in the high school big band, so mostly reading what Sammy Nestico had written out for me. My first jazz record, Miles Davis’ Volume 1, was a birthday present from a girlfriend, but I didn’t immediately become a jazz enthusiast. I didn’t run out and buy more jazz records (I was still buying Mr. Bungle, Infectious Grooves, Primus, Nirvana, Megadeth, and Faith No More cassettes and CDs). But I did play this Miles CD over and over again! I had played cornet for years prior to this and it simply blew my mind what Miles was accomplishing here; his tone, his lyricism, and also his patience. I did, however, fall in love with what I thought the idea of jazz was; at least one of them: improvisation. In high school, I founded the school jazz combo and this is where I discovered more improvisation; I was always super elated that we could play the same song over and over, and I could manipulate the vibe and mood of the tune in the moment. Improvising! Creating something new(ish) all the time, each time. This idea is what attracted me so much to playing jazz and that idea of creating something from little (or nothing) is how I think I came to be a composer, among other creative outlets I find myself in. With music (which spoke and called to me) and being able to always explore and find new ideas via ‘jazz’ the most viable avenue to do this? Yes!, then let’s study jazz!!!
Opeth, My Arms, Your Hearse
youtube
I feel in love with Opeth on their first release, Orchid (1995). Not only was the music incredibly original and fresh for me, but I was also a fan of the fact that it was metal music, which I had already been listening to and playing, that I could distinguish and hear the bass guitar clearly from Johan De Farfalla. And then Opeth’s Morningrise (1996) was released; even better! And then My Arms, Your Hearse came out, even better! My Arms, Your Hearse is probably my favorite “death metal” album of all time. Lead singer, main guitarist and composer, Mikael’s death and clean vocals are thick, heavy, soaring, beautiful and powerful. I’m a person that doesn’t often hear or pay much attention to lyrics. I can sing along with the melodies always, the notes, but I almost never know the lyrics to most songs I love even. I’m definitely not one to write lyrics either (I wrote a children's musical a few years ago and had to “contract” out for lyrics). Sometimes, I take a closer listen to lyrics when conscious about my lack of musical character and most of the time, it just makes me dislike the song (admit it, a lot of lyrics are crap. Not all, but a lot). But I know the lyrics to My Arms, Your Hearse, start to finish. It’s such a cool mysterious story about a ghost checking in on his friends, family and environment, chock full of lush imagery… in my humble opinion. (As writing this paragraph and re-listening to this record, I had an almost second-by-second opinion of each phrase, harmony, and melody and the wow-ness I thought about including but decided against writing a short novel.)
This Is Spinal Tap (a favorite scene)
youtube
In my second year of college my band at the time, Daylight Dies, rented a house together. We had also been friends for about 6 years by then. I don’t know if it was weekly that we watched Spinal Tap, but it was a lot. Since that time in my life, Spinal Tap has continued to be my all-time favorite movie. I watch it at least a few times a year still and can start the movie dialogue from the start and recite a good 90% of it in its entirety. Then when the DVD came out around 2004, I was blessed with another 45 minutes of unseen footage! I think that one of the best aspects of the movie is that with all this material filmed and executed amazingly, there were only 11 pages of a predetermined script when they started filming. Again, improvisation, I love it! “Lukewarm water”… I might add that Daylight Dies continued on to great success, even touring with some of the bands that were our favorites when we were in high school. I got to revisit the band in a way and recorded a contrabass “choir” on one of their releases and arranged strings/woodwinds, using my Tomorrow Music Orchestra on another release of theirs. It was fun to have my death metal “upbringing” returning to my professional musician/composer life.
Steve Reich, Variations for Winds, Strings, and Keyboards
youtube
I was really lucky to have attended an undergraduate program, majoring and studying jazz, that also required me to take three years of classical music history and theory. Even luckier, the professor who designed the program, Dr. Joye Dorr, was a big fan of 20th Century Classical music and thought it important to expose undergraduates to its wealth, even for the jazz folks. In those years, I was transformed into a musician much different and more of whom I am now. But just before we started in on that 20th Century material, my alarm clock woke me one morning and on the radio was a recording of Steve Reich’s Variations for Winds, Strings, and Keyboardsand I missed my first class, transfixed in bed with this repetitive “trance” music I had never experienced before. I became a devote fan of minimalism (for a while) from there. Honorable mentions in this category would have to be Gavin Bryars’ “Jesus’ Blood Never Failed Me Yet” and “Sinking of the Titanic”.
Charlie Haden, The Montreal Tapes with Don Cherry and Ed Blackwell
youtube
Charlie Haden is my musical hero. I’m not sure I could choose just one recording because I find beauty in everything he’s done. But for the sake of the Listed-vibe, let’s say the first album I experienced, The Montreal Tapes with Don Cherry and Ed Blackwell. I was mesmerized and captivated by his sound, his singing-like soloing/lyricism, his patience, his support in the trio, his tone. The open feel of this record makes for an incredibly clear statement, musically. By the time they recorded this live at the Montreal Jazz festival in 1989, these guys had been exploring jazz (and quite a bit of free jazz) together for some 20 years; and it comes through on this record. And yes from here, I went out and bought every Charlie Haden-related record I could. And when I finally met him for the first time in Montreal in 2002 after a concert, I couldn’t help the flow of tears. I heart Charlie Haden profoundly.
Arvo Pärt, Fratres
youtube
What an incredible composer to get to know if you’re looking to enhance aural beautification to your life. Part’s music is so powerful for me and not because many consider him (including himself) a “religious minimalist composer”; that I could care less about. The motion of the lines and dramatic candor are completely intriguing and alluring to me. This record especially. I love that it’s also a piece that can be played with varying instrumentation and carry a different timbre but still be as powerful. The voices between the instruments, where they are placed in the sonic spectrum, the repetitive melodies, and especially the drone! This music not only takes me to a tranquil place but also invigorates me to be better and try to heal the world the best I can. Part is an inspiration for creating more beauty in the world. One of his most popular pieces is called “Spiegel im Spiegel” and the first thought I had upon listening years back was: kindness. Yeah man, more of this, please.
Henryk Gorecki, Symphony No. 3
youtube
I have a hard time falling asleep; it started when I was about six or seven. Thoughts of the day, as well as newer and older ones, arose continuously (and still do). This piece has psychosomatically calmedso many of those, what would have been, sleepless nights. It has a depth to it where my mind can get out of whatever million thoughts are being processed and then relax me in order to calm the mental activity. The low strings repeating the same melody in a brooding canon, wow, with a mix of minor 9ths, major 7ths, perfect 5ths, major/minor 6ths; a mix of doublings I find chilling in the first couple minutes that set the tone for the rest of the piece.
James Blake, The Colour in Everything
youtube
Bon Iver, 22, A Million
youtube
Honorable mentions on current production ideas and such that I study: all of Bjork, Radiohead, and artists that are involved with visual art in some form. But these two mentioned records are fascinating production (and music) - wise. Woah.

The Radical World of Agnès Varda: Your Five-Point Guide
As a nationwide touring programme of her visionary work begins, we explore the life and work of the ‘grandmother of the French New Wave’
July 31, 2018
Agnès Varda is one of the great filmmakers of the 20th century, and – rather amazingly, given that she is now approaching her 90th birthday – 18 years into the 21st century, she shows no sign whatsoever of slowing down. Her most recent film, Faces Places, a documentary made in collaboration with the photographer and muralist JR, was nominated for an Oscar earlier this year, making the so called “grandmother of the French New Wave” the oldest person ever to be put forward for the award. For decades, Varda has quietly devoted herself to her art, constantly experimenting with new techniques and media to capture the world through her own, entirely unique, lens – producing some of cinema’s most poignant, funny and fabulously feminist films along the way. But it’s taken the world a long time to catch up, and finally recognise Varda as the filmmaking marvel she has long been.
Happily, this year is very much her year: her work has been the subject of a two month season at the BFI, titled Agnès Varda: Vision of an Artist and running until the end of July, while a nationwide, Curzon-produced touring programme of eight of her films kicks off next week, a timely celebration of Varda’s brilliance in the build-up to the UK release of Faces Places in September. Here, we catch up with Aga Baranowska, curator of the Varda season at the BFI, to bring you an essential guide to the Belgian-born, French auteur’s inimitable oeuvre.
La Pointe Courte, 1955Courtesy of the BFI
1. Her work merges documentary and fiction to unique effect
Varda made her first film, La Pointe Courte, in 1955, diving into the world of cinema with very little prior knowledge of the medium and no schooling at all (she was working as a photographer up until that point). The bold, stylistically daring film centres on a married couple attempting to restore their failing marriage and is set against the the humble French fishing village of Sète. Varda punctuates the lovers’ lengthy conversations with snapshots of the lives of the village’s poor but proud residents and their struggles for survival.
“Watching La Pointe Courte, you can see from the very beginning that Varda has taken an experimental approach to the film form, mixing documentary and fiction,” Baranowska explains. “The film is basically two stories. One about the married couple – the fictional element – but then another about the villagers, who we really get to know. It all takes place in the same place but on the other hand they could be completely separate films.” This mix of documentary and fiction, the curator notes, is something that Varda has actively continued throughout her career and has come to be viewed as one of her most defining, pioneering traits. A wonderful later example of this can be found in her 1991 film, Jacquot de Nantes, a fictional exploration of the early life of Varda’s filmmaker husband Jacques Demy, lovingly interlaced with documentary footage of him in later life.

2. She is a fiercely political filmmaker
Varda has always made films that confront contemporary politics head on. Early examples of this include her two short films about the Black Panthers, Huey and Black Panthers, both focusing on the demonstrations held in support of Huey P. Newton, co-founder of the political party, who was arrested after shooting a policeman. She also examined various political causes through fiction, perhaps most memorably in her 1977 musical One Sings, The Other Doesn’t – centred around two female friends in rural France, one of whom is set upon having an abortion – and her celebrated vérité drama Vagabond (1985), about the death of a passionate young drifter named Mona. “One Sings, The Other Doesn’t is a very personal film to Varda because she was involved in the abortion movement in France prior to its shooting,” says Baranowska. “And it’s entirely influenced by what was happening in terms of the women’s liberation movement in France in the second part of the 70s.” Indeed, the film depicts a reconstructed protest outside the famous Bobigny abortion trial in 1972 and includes a cameo appearance from defence lawyer Gisèle Halimi, who argued the case for various women who had admitted having abortions.
But it was in Vagabond that Varda said she felt her filmmaking and politics collided to most satisfying effect. “It was inspired by the story of a woman that was found frozen in a field,” Baranowska tells us. “Before making the film, Varda talked to a lot of women who were either homeless or didn’t have a permanent home and she built the tale of Mona around their stories.” The result, Baranowska notes, is truly penetrating, the film’s various interviews with the people who last saw Mona forcing the viewer to consider their own sense of social responsibility.

3. But also a very funny one
Varda’s work is not all designed to be so hard-hitting, however. She is a deeply humorous and playful personality, as a watch of her brilliant autobiographical documentary Beaches of Agnès attests with its opening line, “I’m playing the role of a little old lady, pleasantly plump and talkative, telling her life story”. The film also includes a joyful introduction to the subject of French New Wave cinema by Varda’s friend and fellow filmmaker, Chris Marker, presented in the guise of an orange cartoon cat – another embodiment of Varda’s eccentric, non-stuffy outlook. “That’s my favourite example of her humour,” Baranowska agrees.
Her sense of humour has sometimes landed Varda in hot water, however, as in the case of her third feature, Le Bonheur, which depicts what the BFI term “a paradise for men and a dystopia for obedient women”. The film caused outrage among some viewers at the time, with a handful declaring it anti-feminist. But those familiar with Varda’s humour can spot the veiled irony behind this depiction of a shiny male utopia where women are little more than commodities. As Varda once said, “Humour is such a strong weapon, such a strong answer. Women have to make jokes about themselves, laugh about themselves, because they have nothing to lose.”

4. A love of art – in all its forms – defines her practice
Varda embraces art in all its guises – from her training and early career in photography, which she has continued to pursue both within and outside of her filmmaking (“I take photographs or I make films or I put films in the photos, or photos in the films,” she once explained of this fluid interchange) to her recent forays into installation art and her embracing of digital technology, including Instagram. “The theme of the BFI season is Varda as an artist,” says Baranowska. “I wanted to show that, while many think of her move into art as being a recent thing, her interest not only in cinema as art but in art in general comes through in her work from the very beginning.”
La Pointe Court’s photographic style is proof of this, the curator says – “some of the frames could be still images, beautiful photographs” – while Le Bonheur, with its sumptuous, painterly colour palette (it was filmed in the gardens of Île-de-France, a source of inspiration for the French Impressionists) is another early example of this. “Another key film is The Gleaners and I,” Baranowska continues, talking of Varda’s thought-provoking 2000 documentary about scavenging culture in France. “It’s about people who use found objects in new ways and I believe that here Varda is looking at what it means to be creative, what it means to be an artist or a filmmaker creating something.” Varda’s interest in other people’s creativity as well as her own also manifests itself in films like her 1988 docudrama Jane B. for Agnès V., made in collaboration with Jane Birkin and exploring what it means to be a muse, as well as, in Baranowska’s words, “how the idea of a star is really built as a creative force”. “Then there’s Mur Murs, where she looks at artists in LA who do outdoor murals, and Faces Places with JR,” she adds. “The creative process really is an enduring source of fascination for Varda.”

5. She changed how women were represented on film
One of Varda’s most important legacies in an industry still dominated by men – she was one of the 82 women who led a red carpet demonstration at this year’s Cannes to protest women’s secondary status in cinema – is her ongoing dedication to investigating women’s issues and conveying what it means to be female in the modern world. Two of her most stirring works in this respect are her acclaimed 1962 drama Cléo from 5 to 7, the insightfully fleshed-out portrait of a singer awaiting the results of biopsy and pondering her own mortality, and Vagabond, which is widely celebrated for its de-fetishisation of the female body from the male perspective.
“Vagabond is one of my favourite films she has made,” enthuses Baranowska, “and one of the reasons is because of the protagonist, Mona. She is so uncompromising, so stubborn; she knows that she wants in life and I think that’s so refreshing. I personally haven’t seen that many films with protagonists like her – even now – which is why the film is so vital.” The curator is quick to add, however, that Varda is not merely a feminist filmmaker (a label that’s easy to attach to any female director who tells women’s stories in their work). “She has of course created so many important, influential female characters in cinema so she is a feminist in that sense, but she’s also so much more,” she says. “A couple of weeks ago, at a Q&A after a screening of Beaches of Agnès, she was asked about being a feminist, and her reply was that her main concern has always been to reinvent cinema and be proud and happy as a woman.” Both of these ambitions Varda has undoubtedly succeeded in, carving out a path in filmmaking unlike any other, while flying the flag for women, both as creators and complex beings – statuses that cinema has long denied us.
Agnès Varda: Gleaning Truths commences its tour of eight of Varda’s films nationwide on August 3, running until September 21. Agnès Varda: Visions of an Artist as at the BFI until the end of July.

Hillary’s Platform and Women’s Rights
Firstly, I personally do not want independents on the Democratic ticket in 2012. Yes, that is a period. In the fictional Star fleet universe one of the academy’s final tests is the dreaded Kobayashi Maru, which was created to test the character of cadets on the fastback to command positions. The simulated Kobayashi Maru is a no-win scenario, or a solution that involves ‘redefining the problem’. Why play politics as usual according to someone else’s rules? Go on the attack of the male dominated industry of politics-as-usual and make it more about some unfinished business such as Hillary’s platform and what she wanted to do such as the ongoing work of Global Goals as we presently relish in the world of global support from citizens who are eager for change in policies and politics.
In doing the Women’s March in Washington (https://www.womensmarch.com/), I felt that it would take just a few minutes more out of my day to join the Women’s March online also and in doing so, adding my name to the exponentially growing Pledge of Liberation the realization was that as a united voice, we declare our commitment to fighting for the liberation of all people.
No longer can we allow women’s issues to be treated as if they are in competition with each other, rather than fundamental to one another. As women reaffirm their commitment to each other, and we ask our members of Congress to remember their own pledges to their communities and constituents. As Helen Mirren recently said “It is very clear that when women are given respect and the ability and the freedom to pursue their personal dreams and ambitions, life improves for everyone. Feminism is not an abstract idea but it’s a necessity.”
As a progressive supporter of Hillary, entering my 65th. year of life in this corporeal existence, my childhood had been an uphill climb mentally and morally and there were times in my life I am specially not proud of, albeit I have also been granted a conscience and with that and three brain cells left that I thank God and the universe for that are capable of "functioning on multiple levels, and in multiple dimensions."
SUPPORTING GLOBAL MOTHERHOOD
The 1995 Fourth World Conference on Women in Beijing heralded in the world’s arrival at the crossroads for a global agenda for gender equality. For the first time in history, we have the opportunity to see a world where every pregnancy is healthy and wanted, where every birth is safe, where every child can actually survive beyond their 5th birthday, and where all women, children and adolescents are safe and and empowered to thrive and realize their full potential.
However, we still have a lot of work to do. Right now, millions of women, children and adolescents still don’t have access to the life-saving information, services and supplies they need. The fact remains that one in five children are dying before the age of five from diseases that are entirely preventable, such as pneumonia and diarrhea.
In 2010, the global community formed an unprecedented partnership around Every Woman Every Child movement led by United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon. Now, to achieve the Global Goals, the UN Secretary-General and other world leaders are launching an updated Global Strategy to end preventable maternal, child and adolescent deaths by 2030 and ensure their wellbeing.
Governments – rich and poor alike – must commit to close the gap on preventable deaths so that young people can grow and unlock their full potential. Affordable and effective interventions like access to Healthcare, vaccines, antibiotics, hand-washing and breast feeding have proven track records and immediate impacts.
Already, Japan, Norway, Canada and the US, as well as many other countries, have publicly supported the Global Strategy. Now, it’s time for Nigeria, Tanzania, South Africa and Colombia to follow suit by committing to prioritize maternal, newborn and adolescent health in their national plans.
Not only for us every day folk, this is also an invitation to World leaders and community leaders. Please do your part to ensure the health and well-being of women, children and adolescents everywhere. Come to the Global Citizen Festival in September in New York City and pledge your commitment to the United Nations’ Every Woman Every Child partnership and the updated Global Strategy for Women’s, Children’s and Adolescents’ Health to set a strong precedent for other countries to follow and to ensure strong implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Let us finally get rid of: #GlobalPoverty, #GenderInequality, #MarriageInequality, #FinancialInequality and #GlobalHunger and begin to make global changes #IndigenousRights #LGBTQEquality, #GenderEquality, #FemalesHealthandSafety, #EducationforFemales, #FinancialEquality #WomensRights and #Innovationimprovements, #SanitationandEnvironment. We simply can no longer afford to deny the full potential of one half of the population. The world needs to tap into the talent and wisdom of women for its own protection, if we are to survive at all. Whether the issue is food security, economic recovery, health, or peace and security, the participation of women is needed now more than ever. This is sickening, to deny half the human race, their human engrained and imprisoned potential. It is a mockery to life itself, as we MEN have had well over two-thousand years to try and get it right. We have failed miserably and now we must learn to “unpack our social knapsacks” and look for more equal and ‘real change’ as we enter the 21st century. Say YES to female leaders.
In fighting the Trump-Ryan assault on our Democratic values, not only must we take back our house in 2018 we must put a halt to Trump and company agenda by keeping open access to ALL Americans. We must also put an end to the republican agenda by keeping our promises to our seniors and elders, support Wall Street Reforms by protecting native and indigenous rights and lands fighting corporate greed, supporting all members of society regardless of skin color, nationality, belief system, or any other constitutional indifference, supporting Immigration reform to protect immigrant families from being torn apart, support Climate change and protect our planet, defend a woman’s right to choose, ‘exposing gerrymandering’ and blocking attacks on all Americans voting rights, increase the minimum wage thus the American Dream and continue to investigate the Trump Administration as he continues his own agenda in the oval office making billionaires and millionaires richer on the backs of the rest of the nation. It is already happening. All one has to do is open their eyes, read the news and REALIZE it is already happening. Will you join me and take action?
One of our problems is that the DNC has become outmoded and defunct, obsolete and resistant to change, but it will change for the very reason that it must continue to live as change is in the air. There are younger democrats out here and this is not your grand pappy’s DNC anymore. It is younger with more vitality and it has a message. Move over! Their message is more progressive than ever as they have learnt and listened to the other side of the aisle for a while and have formulated their platform. It must become our platform. Our new message to democrats nationwide. Blue dog conservatism in the ranks will have to learn to become the student and not the master of the ship as progressive ideals take hold.
As an assumed-looking white male I have always had other voices in my blood, and they usually tend to be older and much wiser, and I do learn from and abide by them. Being human and having made my share of mistakes in life, in examining my life in a critical context I realized that when people of conscience do nothing when they are individually called, the earth dies just a little bit more every time.' We are each but mere fibers in this web of life where we are all inextricably connected in one way or another, and whether one chooses to believe it or not, what happens to one community affects all communities. When one segment of society its marginalized for so long, it is the community itself that eventually pays the exacting price.
As a veteran in taking the Oath of Enlistment I also swore to, “support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign AND domestic.” The last time I looked at the United States Constitution and the Bill of Rights, you know, that social contract that started out as nothing but a racist, sexist and xenophobic rag, the rights of ALL citizens were supposedly inclusive!
A Florida mother, Marissa D, Alexander’s life was torn to shreds in ways that I cannot even fathom, and for what, telling a judge, a nation, a world that she believes in her heart that she did the right thing by her standard of morals and her deep relationship with her God. It is solely because of the grace of GOD and Marissa's use of critical analysis of the moment, hindsight, that Rico Gray is alive today, walking free. I volunteer my time as an admin for one of Marissa’s support pages.
I believe of the 195 countries in the world about 24 have a woman as either head of state or government. About 22 percent of all legislative positions worldwide are held by women, and I have read that around 20 percent of governments have a female representative for the UN. It is my believe that a truer equality that has been lagging behind ever since women's suffrage took the front pages in the 20th. century. Although life presents an opportunity for progress at the weirdest times, it would send a powerful message to all countries directly or indirectly perpetuating gender inequality if one of the visible positions in the world is held by a women.
Like the civil Rights movement, Equality and women's rights is not an issue that will ever go away, as it is the number one issue in many nations and so it should be here in our nation. And not only should kit be the number one issue, the message should resonate far and wide as we make sure that its presets should be considered by one and all as the standard model for embarking on foreign trade or doing business at all with the United States. This should be understood and considered tantamount.
Feminine and women's rights are trying to be muffled out by burgeoning sexual exploitation industry to the point where women are being denied access to their own sexuality. It is almost as if the sexual media themselves have said to all women 'No, you cannot have your identity back.' Sexual exploitation is a serious violation of fundamental human rights.
It is sickening to deny half of the human race, their human ingrained and imprisoned potential. It is a mockery to life itself, as we MEN have had well over two-thousand years to try and get it right, we have failed miserably. We must now learn to unpack our sexual and "racial knapsacks" as we turn and look to the future of more "Real Change" as we continue through the door to the 21st. century. as the world will need active global citizens who are engaged in the world, knowledgeable about its diversity and passionate about change. Ending sexist conventions of the past with information and ideas that inspire and motivate global communities to act.
I hope my words find there intended audience, I want them to become the proverbial 'food for thought', If you are as mad as I am about the way things are going, you will formulate a plan of action and just do it.  I want time to be now.  I want people to rise up and scream to the world, ‘Enough!’.  ’I have had enough of this and not going to take it anymore,’ and mean it.
Not knowing when my time is due, I do not have time in my life to lament on others petty feelings about human differences and I will work hard to see that this platform is given its just and overdue consideration inside the beltway in Washington where it really matters. I believe a Quorum call should be called for in the next democratic-controlled congress, based on the sheer importance of this platform.
