Another No More What Ifs Analysis
Okay, so... between wanting to analyze this and Our Light, and the kpop posts that I'll be doing that overlap with this. This blog will turn into Persona Music Analysis hour. Long post. Heavy spoilers for P5R, Proof of Justice, and Mementos Mission. BEGIN!
Tumblr media
Let's begin with some context for the song. I think this is crucial to understanding why it is associated with Akechi's character. If you're familiar with this, you can skip to the lyrical analysis! The best analogy is that Beneath the Mask is to Akira as NMWI is to Akechi, in my opinion. Proof of Justice was an OVA released with the P5 anime (in May 2019) a couple months before the release of Persona 5 Royal in Japan (October of the same year). This OVA is centered around the relationship between Akira and Akechi. Specifically, Akira's grieving process as he goes through the places where they used to meet to find clues about the phrase "Proof of Justice" which was written in the Leblanc crossword. The Jazz Jin, as noted by Muhen here, is a place where Akechi would typically go alone. He also notes in confidant rank 4 that it wasn't necessarily a place that he was keeping secret, but that he never brought people around there since it was his personal space to reflect. As we'll examine, the content of the lyrics is too specific to not be related to the story, and there aren't any other characters or themes I could think are as associated with the song as Goro Akechi. Just wanted to clear this up first, as for some it's not entirely clear why the song is specifically Akechi's (since it's not explicitly stated, and the lyrics are hard to catch while you're playing through normally).
Lyrical Analysis
people come and they go some people may stay with you though I am all alone tonight and I kept on asking myself questions
The very first line is one of the easiest to dissect. Goro, since the death of his mother, has had few stable figures in his life, whether it is his parents, family, or friends. This also extends to his line of work as a celebrity detective, as he is kept so busy that there are very few people he sees on a regular basis, at all. He notes in the second confidant rank (if you choose to ask if he has no friends) that he doesn't have people that he chooses to spend time with. [I chose this option on my last play through and remember it but I can't find the dialogue anywhere].
The doubt that grows in this verse comes from the second line. He is taken by surprise that there is someone he is giving thought to for more than a couple seconds at time. Someone he is... to some degree choosing to spend time with even though he is doing it for the mission. At first, to investigate the Phantom Thieves identity to prevent them from interfering in his revenge plot, and then to lure Akira into a death trap. Tying it back to the first line analysis with the third and fourth line, this dissonance has put the first example of his doubt in this song.
Conceited I was at time I never really doubted myself But tonight got me thinking about it all if I am the fool or what not
There is a self-awareness that Goro always has about his personas (in the metaphorical sense). Goro kind of knows that he's arrogant and it was not ever something that bothered him. Even his character flaws will not get in the way of his plan, even if those flaws are just his humanity peeking through. There's a longing in Lyn's delivery of the last two lines here. He's stumped as to why he feels this way and the inner conflict makes him pause more than he is comfortable with.
"If I am the fool or what not." This line, is literally perfect, the double meaning is just ugh! We'll see this idea again near the end of the song, but I want to take an opportunity to talk about it now. For two years, Goro was the only Persona-user he knew, so he had no reason to believe anyone would ever stand a chance against him. Not only is he angered at himself for allowing Akira to get close to him and cause these doubts but he's also questioning what his role was.
I do not regret with my choices I'm rather proud ooh I know I won't change anything because I can only be me so
I had already written parts of this analysis like two months ago but I saw a post written by @vashtijoy here on how Mementos mission has a sneaky reference to this song. So check that out! It's something I never noticed.
Before Shido's palace, there's an acceptance of the circumstances in this line, that he has to do it regardless of what he may think because he has a goal. Throughout the third semester, we see an Akechi that is alive and tried to deal with the consequences of his actions before Maruki took that opportunity away from him. But he does not show remorse for what he did, that it was the only path he could have chosen with the information he knew.
How can I be so sure? at a crossroads I'm afraid too But I can't let fear get the best of me Someone once said burn my dread babe
This verse... this verse makes me wanna cry. I cannot even lie to you. The direct statement that there is fear behind the fact that he doesn't want to kill Akira and the acknowledgement in the last two lines that one of them has to end up dead. That he is also acknowledging that Akira must also be fearful, by playing with fire through continuing to lead the Phantom Thieves. The doubt is consuming him in this verse. The crossroad offers two choices, one where he sacrifices himself for Akira and one where Akira no longer is with him. The reference to Persona 3 really carries the weight here with this theory. I would explain more but I only spoiler tagged for P5R so we move.
Who knows what tomorrow holds? just wanna live my life the way I want what fills up my soul is passionate music that makes me want to sing
The first line, to me, reads that he's given up on allowing himself to think if there's another way to resolve his doubts. That there's another path where neither of them die and that it can't exist. He wants to live freely, which is what he thinks is assured once his revenge plan is complete. In another world, maybe it was one where both of them could be together without this chasing them. The last two lines I don't have a particular opinion about, but I think they add to the fact that Goro has given up entertaining other possibilities.
my story will be starring me just like yours ooh ooh who knows when will it end what matters most is how you bring joy to life so
I think about confidant rank 8. It feels written all over this line, and we come back to an idea that was present with "If I am the fool or what not." I think there's a bit of that 'hatred' that he talks about, that he's resentful that Akira story will end differently than his own. He's waiting for the day to come and resolves by centering himself, that once his goal is achieved, that he will achieve joy for the first time in his life. Refusing to acknowledge that Akira was showing him companionship that brought him happiness for one last time.
The Theme of Doubt
One of the things I have had trouble defining is what the doubt Goro is referring to is, or why the doubt is there. It's one of the things that is left in the air. Speculating here a little more than I usually will try to: the doubt stems from the fact that Goro is enjoying his time with the protagonist and is unsure what that means. In terms of what he is doubting, I'm not sure, I don't think he is referring to his plan, but rather the fact that Akira is caught up in it at all. His resolve to complete his plan never changes, but he wishes he could choose to leave him out of this. This tracks with a line stated by the SIU director which implies that some of the cruel actions carried out by the conspiracy/antisocial force by Akechi are not entirely his idea. He still carries them out without hesitation, but he never thinks of them himself. One of the reasons I wrote out this analysis was to see if there were any opinions on what this part of the song meant since I have trouble wrapping my head around it myself.
Goro, in base game and third semester, never shows any form of doubt or regret to the protagonist directly, only brief flickers and implications from dialogue. But this song is layered with it and bashes you in by telling you that it is what he is struggling with most when it comes to executing his plan. It's what nags at me even though I've tried to analyze this song a couple of times on my own.
IN CONCLUSION: I obviously hate goro akechi. (lying is fun)

hi :)! ive read several of your bsd meta posts (and hadn't realized i wasn't following you, oops) and really enjoy them. i saw you were getting into persona 5 so i just wanted to give a little wave of hello and encouragement! it's one of my favorite games, and im sure you'll enjoy it the farther in you get. if you'd ever like to talk to someone about it im more than happy to :) hope you have fun!
Omg hi hi! Ah don’t worry about not having followed or anything; I’m just glad to hear people enjoy my posts (I really hope I can make a few more at some point…)
But yes! P5 Royal is really fun! I’ve been trying to play it for. God. A year now. And I haven’t even finished Kamoshida’s palace.
I did however watch a stream of original P5 the year after it first came out and got all the way to the end of Madarame’s arc and Sushi Boy Akechi’s intro - purely so I could understand why my bestie kept tormenting me by slipping pancakes into every conversation…
So I know a little more than where I’m at, and I’ve seen the odd artwork or out of context scene, but it’s not nearly enough for me to really talk about it yet or write anything substantial. Which is. Maddening. I did write a couple thoughts on my blog about Joker and Ryuji’s awakenings though… it was awhile ago so I don’t know if you’ve seen but I can find them again if you’re interested?
Thank you for the encouragement though! The thing is - I know I’ll like it; it’s basically everything I’d like in terms of theming (justice, morality, trauma, superpowers, cool costumes) and I’m already a big P2 fan… I just. Don’t have a lot of time on my hands is all. Once I get further in I’ll likely start making a few posts and I’m totally down to chat about it! I think you can tell from how much I just rambled here. As I am wont to do. Argh.
Anyways thank you! I’m sure it will be a lot of fun! :D

What other fandoms are you in, apart from this one?
Tl;Dr?: I fit's not participating it's: Star Rail, Genshin (are the ones I RP in), Dragon Age (I adore, no way I step into rp there), Digimon, SMT (+persona), Kingdom Hearts (but kh3 ruined it), Shadowrun, DnD, Servamp, Bungo Stray Dogs (but only the anime sources), Devil May Cry, League of Legends and more
if it is participating? Well, only HSR by now.
I'm never really active in any fandom, I'm the silent lurker unless I rp and since I exclusively rp'ed OCs until Aventurine I usually slipped under the radar there too. (And Ven is a very special exception I feel, I mean, look at Blade or my Multimuse, they're wastelands xD). But when we go for fandoms I enjoy? Then, oh boy, there's a lot.
Now, first of all, what will always get me talking is Dragon Age, I have the novels (or read them), I still want all the comics, I played all games. It went as far that I wanted to weep over Baldurs Gate 3 because that one finally gave me the “hd, new content” game I wanted from Bioware in the dragon age universe for years. We can even say centuries now.
The second one that comes to mind is Digimon, I claw for every Digimon game I can get, I adore the idea in most iterations. It's always fun.
And while we're at Digimon it's easy to say: Shin Megami Tensei. Yes, also, all I can get my hands on except of the next fucking persona 5 spin off because listen. Persona 5 was awesome, yes, but I suck at rhythm games and I don't have a ps5. But I especially adore the digital devil saga. I want a HD remake of that.
Also, I have to mention Persona separately now given per 5 it's officially not a SMT game anymore, funny, given they finally brought the demons back. And when we're at persona, I played P2, innocent sin and couldn't get my hands on either P1 or eternal punishment. I will never forgive p5 for using the butterfly theme on someone and it not being a connection to persona 2.
I used to love Kingdom Hearts but then it just became more and more of buy this console too, do that thing too and I really didn't like how KH3 looked despite giving my favorite char a keyblade. Such a waste.
I put Shadowrun in all my futuristic RP characters, I love delving into a world that is worse than our own. It just happens that we come always closer to it being real. I hate how we got scammed out of magic though. Any augmentations I put on my characters can usually be found and described on the shadowhelix.
Well, I couldn't find anyone to rp Shadowrun so I settled on DnD and I've been reading up. Still preferring Pathfinder pantheon/lore though.
League of Legends has been a part of my life for a really long time. With HSR and Genshin having actually valuable dailies I haven't played a game in months. But I adore the lore, the world, and I wish I could play in it. The first time I tried the fandom was really nice. But damn I fear I that won't be the case anymore and I don't wanna flood my HSR blogs with league rp'ers so I'm not following anyone from there anymore (not that the ppl I liked are still around to begin with).

@thedetectiveofinaba sends: 3, 4 and 18 for Naoto and Yosuke!
canon questionnaire. | Open (includes my other muses if you know who they are)
3. What’s the best thing about the show/series/books/comics/etc.?
The joys have the series having anime adaptations, manga adaptations, a fighting game, rhythm game, some weird chibi 3DS games and a JRPG as canon.
For the series overall, I’d say the identity of each game is some of the strongest I’ve seen. Every entry is distinct and while I have themes and characters I like more than others, they still stand out as unique compared to the millions of other media I see and forget. I’ve dismissed half of the main P5 cast for being boring and just anime™ characters, however, they’re still more defined and possess depth compared to most anime I’ve seen and I’ve seen a lot. The PT’s struggles can actually make me feel things, wow!
For both of them, I would say that their Social Links are some of the best parts of their character, since you’re given the opportunity to know them more. Yosuke’s shifts focus onto Saki rather than him around the middle, but I didn’t really mind because you know, we kinda need to resolve that point lmao. Naoto’s, I did not like at first because it didn’t seem to match with the struggles her Shadow talked about, but after 3 rewatches, the subtle hints finally started hitting me.
Best SL is Naoki’s though, don’t @ me.
4. What’s the worst thing about the show/series/books/comics/etc.?
I think the pacing in Golden is kind of shit. There are a lot of things that Golden improved upon and some of the extra content is good, like the beach event and the ski trip, but some of those extra scenes are just terrible. Like just knowing that a whole day I could have used to train the party or raise a Social Link is being eaten up by that stupid ass Okina Babe Hunt Yosuke suggested is fucking painful. Not only that, but it’s kind of a bad fucking scene for Yosuke’s character overall. There are a number of scenes in Golden that butcher his character, so I understand completely when people see him as a huge fucking asshole and hate his guts (not that he was saintly in the OG P4).
In general, there’s a problem where Golden flanderizes traits of a character for comedy and it’s just Bad. (I also think the Junes Concert is also a waste of time and one of the few things I’ll give the manga credit for is managing to tie it in with Rise’s Social Link.)
As for Naoto, some of the writing in P4 with her pretty questionable, but nothing pisses me off more than the almost universally despised Persona x Detective Naoto novel. I’ve seen people describe it as “Naoto learns to accept the patriarchy as correct” and honestly? yeah.
It’s bad. I hate it. Don’t even mention it near me unless you want to hear about how much I fucking hate it.
18. How long have you been writing the character?
I’ve written for Naoto since... 2018, but the first iteration of her was just terrible, that’s all I’ll say. She only really came to tumblr in 2020 and she was a little rough too. I shaved off quite a bit of her more unpleasant traits because I knew I was going to be writing with other people and I didn’t want to drag people into 20 long threads of making her be less of a bitch, but as you can see now, I’ve added plenty of flaws and she’s a polite jerk. She’s gone through a lot of improvement and my blorbo deserves nothing but the best so give me some Naoto centric fics please I am begging you.
I started with Yosuke in early 2019, but he was on and off compared to Naoto. If I wanted an ‘easier’, less troubled person to write, I would go to him. The way I write him is different from Naoto’s, so he worked as a way to reset myself if I couldn’t figure out how I wanted to write Naoto. I didn’t fully write him until 2020, when I made his blog. That being said, Naoto still takes up the brain cells so tough luck getting me to shift my focus to him (or my other muses for that matter... I miss you Dojeema).

I COMPLETELY forgot who posted this but there was this one tumblr that posted Pegoryu with ‘Koi no Yokan’ and I was like OMG YES, but then after a while I think an anon sent in ask about that and was like ‘Okay hear me out—Koi no Yokan and Coup de Foudre cause Ryuji’s Zio and lightning and thunder and he was the flash of lightning that made Akira fall in love’ AND I WAS EVEN MORE LIKE YES YES YES YES
BUT NOW I CAN’T FIND THE POST OR BLOG SO I FEEL I SHOULD JUST LET YOU KNOW OF THE EXISTENCE OF THIS AND HOPE YOU CAN SEE IT FOR YOURSELF ONE DAY
I ain't gonna lie, for hot a minute I thought Koi no Yokan was a band, and that Coup de Foudre was a song, and I was like, I don't think I've heard of them before but I will do it for pegoryu-- AND THEN MY PEA BRAIN REBOOTED AND WENT, YOU DINGUS, THEY ARE WORDS WITH DEFINITIONS. And THEN I remembered where I heard Koi no Yokan before and I went on a fever manhunt through my tags for it and I believe it is this post by @kareofbears!
Tumblr media
here's the link to reblog ahaha! Though, I did not see/cannot find the Coup de Foudre follow up, sorry ( ̄y▽, ̄)╭
but YES, YES YES YES!!!! We have the definition phrase for koi no yokan, but for coup de foudre, I've found, it's "an astonishing occurrence; especially : overwhelming love at first sight", and for your bit you mentioned "The moment when "lightning strikes" or something unforgettable occurs that you want to capture forever".
And I am literally shaking. It's so perfect for them. Not only am I shook at the slow burn aspect, but the lightning metaphor and imagery is so immaculate. Like holy shit!!!!!!
Anyway, long ass talk (me just rambling bc i haven't slept for a while LMAO) under the cut, sorry! But know that my Pegoryu heart just got reignited, so thank you, anon 😎
In my headcanons, I honestly see Akira being the one that falls first. He looks and acts reserved restrained, but he gets attached to people fast (the power of friendship, babyyyy-- my boy is a shonen jump protag), and Ryuji being that first re-connection back to the rest of the world, literal zio, lightning storm, thunder-- To Akira, there is a time before Ryuji, and then there is a time after Ryuji. Ryuji is... someone, something, an event that happened to him. Lightning strike that shifted the world a few degrees different.
Like, of COURSE, if it were anybody else-- I do believe Akira would've saved them, would've stood up, would've become someone more than what was given to him. But there is something so narratively delicious that he meets Ryuji first, and this is the person that woke up something in him, that he took one look after that first dungeon and sees recognition-- that core trait of protection being reflected back. I've said it in some posts before, but like, there was a writing choice for Akira to fully start his journey with the Chariot arcana, rather than Magician; The Chariot tarot card is all about overcoming challenges and gaining victory through maintaining control of your surroundings.
Akira at the beginning of the game is someone defined by loss: of his old life, reputation, and of control. I know the awakening theme for P5 is about rebellion, revenge, anger-- and he does embody all of that! But his core is to protect. That's what got him into his situation; the world punished him for standing up for someone else, tried to tell him it was a mistake, and it was wrong. Even after having dreams about Igor hinting at his future, meeting Sojiro, seeing how weird Shujin is-- it's meeting Ryuji, accidentally going into the dungeon, and having this stranger try to protect him-- that's what wakes Akira up. His lightning flash moment. Ryuji happened to him, and validated his core drive to protect; Ryuji looked at Akira, a stranger, and didn't debate on the merits of saving some guy who could be good or bad-- he just did it.
Akira woke his persona to save others. And as defined by the Chariot-- he overcame his challenge (fear of action due to what had happened before) and gained victory through control of his surroundings (reconnecting with the world and people, gaining a persona granted him control of his circumstances, etc.).
Ryuji is the overwhelming, unforgettable lightning strike.
Maybe Akira doesn't fall in love right at that moment. But I do believe he falls a lot faster, and that he recognizes the impact in meeting Ryuji. But again, his restraint does not let him voice any of this (because Akira is still very defined by fear); he knows what he feels, he just lost his voice in admitting anything truly vulnerable.
Now, on the other side, I headcanon Ryuji embodying koi no yokan perfectly. A lot of it is also Atlus having everyone adore Akira (which, deserved. Akira deserves good things), but it's my headcanon and I'm explaining the process.
I honestly believe it takes Ryuji longer to truly connect in a way that HE finds matter. It's easy to help strangers, but it's hard to let down your guard to allow someone at your soft belly; this is exemplified with Ryuji's prickly countenance, and his quick reaction to anything that could cause harm to others/the group. A lot of that is from the stuff that happened to him prior the game: Kamoshida breaking his leg, ostracization by his team and school, his own guilt, and hell, the lightly mentioned family history in his SL.
Like, chains are a big symbolism in P5: restraint, being literally chained down by society, yourself, etc. And in comparison to the main cast, his story happened outside of P5 plot (no connection to Shido, and his story was not jumpstarted by the Metaverse); Ryuji... just happened in the plot. Things happened to him. And he's been living his life defined by those things, chained down by external forces but also by his mistakes.
That's why, on a narrative level, it really makes sense that Ryuji's whole SL is about recovery, progress, and freedom. Everyone else is finally stepping into their story, so to speak, but he's the one moving on, because his story was done before the game even began (and that Atlus just did not give attention to, lbr), and change is an inevitable part of life.
But there is also the delicious juxtaposition of Ryuji's themes of freedom mixing with inevitability, though. Just the possibilities of internal struggle, you know? Like, if my life can change because I will it, because I seek freedom and that is an active process- how does inevitability play a role? Fate isn't real, it can't be (because does that mean half the bullshit in my life was doom to occur?), because that is a painful thought-- but. Akira.
Akira is someone that became inevitable to Ryuji's story; just as Ryuji was the lightning strike to Akira's life to wake up and recognize himself again, Akira is the inevitability of change for Ryuji's stagnancy. Because Ryuji is an active person in many ways-- staying in one spot, staying stagnant is what hurt him most, and just meeting Akira was.
It felt like the tide pulling from the shore, the sun setting, moon rising, world turning on its axis every day. Normal, devastating inevitable forces.
Their meeting was by chance, but did Ryuji really think he could stay the same? Did he think he could stay the same in his loneliness, after having met Akira?
He didn't fall first, but on some level, Ryuji knew that all the roads he ran on would lead back to Akira.
And while Ryuji may struggle with his own themes of freedom and inevitability-- I think he ultimately accepts what he feels for Akira, and makes new meaning of the two concepts for himself: "I guess bein' free...it's like how I feel when I'm talking to you, man."
Finding freedom in that inevitable love, because at the end of the day, Ryuji has the choice to choose that written piece, or reject it. And he chooses take it and make it mean something, changing in the way that matters to him.
Anyway. Thanks for reading this far LMAO. But anon, whoever you are, thank you for your ask, because I am literally this image rn

I'd love to hear more of your thoughts about why P5R didn't quite land for you. I had the same reaction to it, but I've never quite been able to properly articulate why the last section fell so flat.
God okay so I've tried several times to answer this, and it seems like the answer is 'I still have way too many feelings, personally, to say this in anything less than thirty pages and fifteen hours of work', because Persona 5 the original is a game I loved a lot and care about a great deal. And most of the reasons I disliked Royal feel, in my head, like a list of ways it broke some of the things I liked best about P5--which means explaining them feels like I need to explain everything I loved about the original game, which is a book in itself, complete with referents to P3, P4, Jungian psychology, the Joseph Campbell mytharc, and fuck all even knows what. And that is too much.
But today I realized that I could instead describe it from an angle of, Persona 5 Strikers succeeds really well at doing the thing I think Royal was trying to do but failed at. And that I think I can talk about in a reasonable amount of wordspace, hopefully, behind this cut because I have at least one friend who hasn't played Royal yet.
Note for reblogs/comments: I HAVE NOT FINISHED STRIKERS YET. I got through the jail that pretended to be the final jail and have not yet gone into the obviously inevitable 'ohshit wait, you mean there's something more than simple human machinations behind all of this?' dungeon. (I got stuck on a really frustrating side quest, put the game down, and then dived into Hades to avoid throwing the Switch across the room for a while--and anyone around this blog lately knows how THAT'S been going.) Please no spoilers past Okinawa!
So, one of the many, many things I really appreciated about Persona 5 was its straightforward and unashamed attitude towards abusers and their acts of violence. Because, while yes P5 is a story about the use of power and control to make others suffer, it fundamentally isn't about those abusers themselves. It's about their victims, those that survive their crimes. And this shows up repeatedly over the course of the game.
We do not give a shit why Kamoshida wanted to beat and rape his students. We really don't. Kamoshida does not deserve our attention one moment longer than it takes to make him stop. Because, ultimately, that's the goal of P5, start to end. We don't know for sure if what we're doing is fair, if it's justice, if it's questionable. What we know is that people are being hurt, badly, actively, right now this second. What we know is that victims are suffering. What we know is that we, personally, us-the-protag and us the Phantom Thieves at large, are in danger. And in those circumstances, we don't care about the abuser's side any more. We don't. We don't have the space or time or capacity to care, because that is not the point.
The point is to help the weak. To save the people who need saving, right here and now. To give others the courage to stand up on their own behalf. We're not even out to change society, not really--that's a byproduct. We are reactions. We are triage. We are important.
There's something so empowering and validating about that as a theme, y'know? In a media landscape so full of "sympathetic villains", the idea that, you know, maybe sometimes you don't have to break yourself to show compassion that might possibly heal the bad guy--that sometimes you can just make the bad guy stop hurting people--feels both refreshing and satisfying. I really appreciate it as a message! I liked it a lot!
And yes, there's nuance to that theme, and the game is not without compassion. We save Futaba, because 'make the bad guy stop hurting people', in that case, means 'make this person stop hurting herself'. We give Sae a path forwards, help her fix her own heart. Yet it's worth pointing out that in both of those cases, while we were very glad to do those things, to save those people, we also went into both of those palaces for extremely practical reasons to begin with. We needed Futaba's help. We needed Sae's help. The fact that we chose to talk Sae into a change of heart rather than simply stealing her treasure, while ultimately a very good thing for her, was absolutely a practical choice predicated on the need for her palace to still exist to save our life. And yes, we wanted to save her, for Makoto's sake--yes, we wanted desperately to save Futaba. But Sae and Futaba let themselves be helped, too, and that doesn't change the overarching themes of the story itself.
Akechi (and to some extent Okumura) would not let himself be helped. Akechi's another interesting nuance to this theme, because of all our villains, we do learn the most about what drove him to the cruelties and crimes he's committed. He's at that intersection of victim and villain, and we want to help him, as a victim--but we also know that stopping him as a villain is more important. We'd like to save him from himself if we could, because we save people from their sources of trauma, it's what we do. We regret being unable to do so. But in the end, what matters to the story is not that Akechi refused to be saved--it's that Shido and Yaldabaoth need to be stopped, for the sakes of everyone else they're hurting now and may continue to hurt in the future.
The thing is, there's space and maybe even a need for a corollary discussion of those places where victim and villain intersect. It's an interesting, pertinent, and related topic. Strikers made an entire video game about it, a really good video game. It's centered in the idea that, yes, these people need to be stopped, and we will make stopping them our priority--but they're not going after us, and that gives us some space to sympathize. Even for Konoe, who specifically targets the Phantom Thieves--compare him to Shido, who actively destroyed the lives of both Joker and Futaba, who ordered Haru's father's death, who's the entire reason the team is still dealing with the trauma of Akechi's everything. Of course the game can be sympathetic to Konoe where it can't with Shido. There's enough distance to do that.
But right--Strikers is a separate game. It's a separate conversation. It's, "last time, we talked about that, so now let's take it one step further." And that's good writing. (It's something Persona has done before, too, also really well! Persona 3 is about terrible, occasionally-suicidal depression and grief. P4 is about how you can still be hurting and need some help and therapy even if things seem ok. Related ideas, but separate conversations that need to be separate in order to be respectful and do justice to either one. P5, as a follow-up to P4, is a conversation about how, ok, changing yourself is great and all, but sometimes the problem is other people so how do you deal with that? Again, still related! Still pertinent! Still alluded to in P4, with Adachi's whole thing--but it wasn't the time or place to base a quarter of the game around it.)
So one of Royal's biggest issues, to me, is that it tries to tack on this whole new angle for discussion onto a game that was originally about something else.
Adding Maruki's palace--adding it at the end, which by narrative laws suggests that it's the true point that everything else should be building up to--suddenly adds in about a hundred new dimensions at once. It wants us to engage with "what in this abuser/manipulator's life led him to act this way?" for basically the first time all game (we'll get to Akechi later). It wants us to engage with, "if the manipulator has a really good reason or good intentions, does that mean we should forgive them?" It requires us to reflect on, "what is the difference between control and cruelty?" It asks, "okay, but if people could be controlled into being happy, would that be okay?" (Which, based on the game so far, is actually a wild out-there hypothetical! Literally not a single thing we've seen in the game suggests that could ever happen. Even the people who think being controlled is safer and easier are miserable under it. Control that's able to lead to actual happiness is completely out of left field in the context of everything we've encountered all game so far.)
That's too much! We don't have time to unpack all that! We only have an eighth of the game left! Not to mention we are also being asked to bring back questions we put to bed much earlier in the game about the morality of our own actions, in a wholely unsatisfying way. Maruki attempts to justify his mass brainwashing because "it's the same as what you're doing", and we know it isn't, but the game didn't need Maruki calling it out in order for us to get that. We already faced that question when we started changing hearts, and again several times throughout the game, and again when we found our targets in Yaldabaoth's cells. The fact that we change hearts does not mean we think "changing hearts is fine and kind and should be done to everyone, actually." Changing hearts has been firmly established in this game as an act of violence, acceptable only because it prevents further systemic violence against innocents that we must prevent. The moral question has never once been about whether it's ok to change the hearts of the innocent, only about how far it's ethical to go against individuals who are actively hurting other people. Saying "you punched that guy to keep him from shooting a child, so punching people is good and I will save the world by punching everyone!" is confusing! and weird! and not actually at all helpful to the question of, how much violence is it acceptable to use to protect others! So presenting the question that way just falls really flat.
(And right, I love Strikers, because Strikers has time to unpack all that. Strikers can give us a main bad guy who wants to control the whole world for everybody's own good, because Strikers has earned that thematic climax. It has given us sympathetic bad guys who started out wanting to control the world to protect themselves and ended up going too far. It's given us Mariko Hyodo, who wanted to control the world to protect other people and went too far. It's given us a long-running thread about police, the desire to serve, and the abuse of power that can lead to. And since we are actively trying to care for the people whose hearts we're changing in Strikers, we can open the door to questions about using changes-of-heart and that level of control to make other people happy. We can even get a satisfying conclusion out of that discussion, because we have space to characterize the difference--Konoe thinks that changing peoples' hearts means confining them, but the Phantom Thieves think it means setting them free. We have seen enough sympathetic villains that we as an audience have had the space to figure out how we feel about that, and to understand the game's perspective of "stop them AND save them, if we can possibly do both." And that message STILL rests firmly on Persona 5's message of "it is Good to do what you have to do to stop an abuser so long as you don't catch innocent people in your crossfire.")
It's worth noting that the general problem of 'asking way too many new questions and then not answering them' also applies to how Royal treats its characters, too. P5 did have unanswered questions left at the end! The biggest one, and we all knew this, was Akechi, and what actually happened to him, and how we should feel about him, and how he felt about us. That was ripe for exploring in our bonus semester, and to Royal's credit they did in fact try to bring it up, but by god did they fuck up doing it.
Akechi's probable death in the boiler room was absolutely the biggest dangling mystery of the game. It was an off-screen apparent death of a key antagonist, so all of the narrative rules we know suggested that he might still be alive and would probably come back if the story went on for long enough. So when Royal brings him back on Christmas Eve, hey, great! Question answered. Except that the situation is immediately too good to be true, and immediately leads to another mystery, which leads to a flat suspicion that something must be wrong. We spend several hours of gameplay getting sly hints that, oooh, maybe he's not really alive after all, before it's finally confirmed by Maruki: yup, he really died, if we end the illusion we'll kill him too. Okay, at least we know now. Akechi is alive right now and he's going to be dead if we do this, and that doesn't make a ton of sense because every other undead person disappeared when the person who wished for them realized they were fake but at this point we'll take it. So we take down Maruki, and okay, Akechi really is dead! Probably! We're fairly sure! Aside from our lingering doubts!
And then we catch a glimpse of maybe-probably-could be him through the train window, and I just want to throw something, because come on.
Look, it is just a fact of storytelling: the more times you make an audience ask 'wait, is this character dead or aren't they?', the less they will care, until three or four reversals later you will be hard pressed to find anybody who gives a shit. Royal does this like four different times, and every iteration comes with even less certainty than the last. By the end, we somehow know even less than we did when we started! Did Akechi survive the boiler room to begin with and Maruki just didn't know? Or was Maruki lying to try and manipulate us further? Or was he actually dead and then his strength of will when Maruki's reality dissolved was enough to let him survive after all? Is that even actually him out the train window?
Where is he going! What is he doing! How did any of this happen! What is going on! We all had these questions about Akechi at the end of the original P5, and the kicker is that Royal pretends like it's going to answer them only to go LOL JK NO. It's frustrating and it's dissatisfying and it annoys me.
The one Akechi question that Royal doesn't even bother to ask, though, let alone leave ambiguous, is how does the protagonist feel about him? The entire emotional weight of the third semester rests on the protagonist caring about Akechi, Sumire, and Maruki. Maruki's the person we're supposed to sympathize with even as we try to stop him. Sumire's the person we're trying to save from herself. And Akechi is our bait--is, we are told, the one thing our protagonist wished for enough to actualize it in this world himself. Akechi's the final lure to accept Maruki's deal. Akechi's survival is meant to be tempting.
For firm Akechi fans, this probably worked out fine--the game wanted to insist that the protagonist cared for Akechi the same way the player did. For those of us who're a little more ambivalent, though (or for the many and valid people who hated him), this is a super sour note. Look, one of the Persona series' strengths is the way it lets players choose to put their time and emotional investment into an array of different characters, so the main story still has weight even if there's a couple you don't care about that much. It has always done this. The one exception, from P3 all the way through P4 to here and now, is Nanako Dojima, and by god she earned that distinction. I have never met a person who played Persona 4 who didn't love Nanako. Nanako is a neglected six-year-old child who is brave and strong enough to take care of herself and all of the housework but who still tries not to cry when her dad abandons her again and lights up like the sun when we spare her even the tiniest bit of time and attention. It is impossible not to care for Nanako. Goro Akechi is not Nanako.
And yet third semester Royal doesn't make sense if your protagonist doesn't feel linked to Akechi. The one question, out of all the brand new questions Royal throws out there, that it decides to answer all by itself--and it's how you as a player and your protagonist ought to feel about an extremely complex and controversial character. What the fuck, Royal. What the fuck.
In conclusion, I'll leave you with this. I played the original Persona 5 in March and April of 2017, as an American, a few months after the 2016 election and into the term of our then president. It felt painfully timely. A quick calendar google early on indicated that the game's 20XX was almost certainly 2016, and the closer our plot got to the in-game November leadup to an election destined to be dominated by a foul and charming man full of corruption and buoyed up by his own cult of personality, the more I wanted to laugh/cry. It felt timely. It felt important. It felt right.
I went through Royal (in LP form on youtube, not having a platform to play it on) in summer of 2020, with a hook full of face masks by my front door and protests about racial tension and local policing that occasionally turned into not-quite-riots close enough to hear at night if I opened the windows of my apartment. The parts of the game that I remembered felt as prescient and meaningful as ever, if not even more so. The new parts felt baffling. Every single evil in the game felt utterly, painfully real, from the opening moments of police brutality to the idea of a country led by a guy who probably would use his secret illegitimate teenage son as a magical assassin if the opportunity presented itself and he thought he could get away with it. Yaldabaoth as the cumulative despair of an entire population who just wanted somebody to take over and make things be okay--yes, yes, god, in summer of 2020? With streets full of people refusing to wear masks and streets full of people desperate for change? Of course. Of course that holy grail of safety should be enticing. Of course it should be terrifying.
And then Maruki. Maruki, who was just so far outside the scope of anything I could relate to the rest of the game or my own life. Because every single other villain in the rest of Persona is real. From the petty pandering principal to the human-trafficking mob boss. The corrupt politicians and the manmade god of cultural desire for stability. And this game was trying to tell me that the very biggest threat of all of them, the thing that was worse than the collective force of all society agreeing to let this happen because succumbing was easier than fighting back--that the very biggest threat of all was that the world could be taken over by some random nobody's misguided attempts to help?
No. Fuck no. I don't buy it. Because god, yes, I have seen the pain and damage done on a tiny and personal and very real level by the tight-fisted control of someone trying to help, it never looked like this. Not some ascended god of a bad therapist. All the threats to the world, and that's the one I'm supposed to take seriously? This one man is more of a threat than the fundamental human willingness to be controlled?
Sorry, but no. Not for me. Not in this game. Not in this real-life cyberpunk dystopian apocalypse.

Question. Part 1. Hi. I like your blog and your analytical analysis of books, which is always very accurate and insightful, so I couldn't find anyone better to ask a question to. I am haunted by the scene where Regis announced to the male part of Hansa that Milva is pregnant. Then there is a dialogue, at the end of which Regis asks Geralt to do something... I felt connected to Jaskier as a character for the first time because I also don't understand what it is about. ->
P2. I asked my friends who had read the books, and their opinions were divided. Some believe that Regis asks Geralt to dissuade Milva from having an abortion, while others, on the contrary, believe that Geralt should persuade her to do it. Or maybe that's not the point at all? Further, my reflections, which may not be relevant to the question... Maybe I'm the only one who noticed a lot of "c*nservative" ideas in books.
P3. We cannot ignore the fact that they were written quite a long time ago and many ideological and cultural aspects of Poland (see the law banning abortion in 2020) that could influence them. It was the 'poll' at the beginning of this scene that made me think of this. Why do men decide whether to give Milva medicament or not? Secondly, Geralt insistently refuses to call it "medicament" but prefers the word "agent."
P4. Secondly, Geralt insistently refuses to call it "medicament" but prefers the word "agent." He also demands that Jaskier shut up when he supports Cahir that "only a woman decides." Pro-life vibes, or is it just me? We also can't ignore the fact that Geralt is very concerned about his infertility.
P5. In general, continuing the theme: very many sorceresses also lament the lack of ability to have children, and all of them, even if they had relationships with women, were always looking for the ONE AND ONLY man. Moreover, the same-sex relationships in the book are only female/female shown, but never male/male (a quick and disdainful mention in "Season of Storms"). But even f / f relationships are presented as some not-serious-play; remember how Ciri called it all "fun," talking with Mistle.
P6. Here again, I see a toxic-masculine culture that sexualizes lesbians and completely denies gays. (This also reminds me of Poland's situation, where the majority of the population is very religious and homophobic.) I was too disappointed by the stereotypical representation of women: hatred because of the same outfits/jewelry, thin waists and small portions (remember how Yen and Fringilla eat), eternal gossip, and so on. I mean, women aren't like that, man.
P7. The toxicity of the presented heterosexual relationships has been said a thousand times before me. In general, I am always a little upset when I see that someone calls Sapkowski such a tolerant writer. According to my observations, toxic masculinity, "conservative" ideas, and strengthening stereotypes about LGBT people, women, etc., often slip into his books. I may be wrong, so I apologize in advance. I would like to hear your opinion. Thanks.
Finally. The scene I was talking about, maybe you need it. ‘What’s this all about then? Unanimity? Total agreement? Is that what you’re expecting?’‘You know very well what it’s about. But since you ask, I shall tell you. Yes, Geralt, that’s precisely what it’s about. And no, it’s no me that's expecting it.’ ‘Could you be clearer?’ ‘No, Dandelion,’ the vampire snapped. ‘I can’t be any clearer. Particularly since there is no need. Right, Geralt?’ ‘Right,’ the Witcher said...
p. s. From the same Anon with a 7-part question. English is not my first language, so I apologize for any mistakes. I tried to ask questions as respectfully as possible, but I often confuse English pronouns/times/etc. Please note that it was completely unintentional if I made an offensive mistake, and I deeply apologize. I will correct myself if you point this out to me in your answer. Thanks again.
omg i love this and i’m gonna divide it into different segments to be easier to read. also don’t worry your english is great thank you!!
1) “I asked my friends who had read the books, and their opinions were divided. Some believe that Regis asks Geralt to dissuade Milva from having an abortion, while others, on the contrary, believe that Geralt should persuade her to do it.”
yes, this is a confusing scene. when i first read it i was TOTALLY relating to dandelion, completely confused on what the message was and what the in-universe conversation was about. i had just felt proud of myself for understanding everything regis said in the previous scenes, and now here he was saying something and i didn’t know how the fuck to decipher it.
but after re-reading and also reading others’ analysis on r/wiedzmin, i found what i think to be the answer. in my opinion, the scene is not about actually either dissuading or persuading milva to have an abortion. rather, it’s about supporting her emotionally so that she can make the right choice for herself.
regis, as a doctor, wants his patient to make choices with a level head and for her own self, not under pressure to make the strategic choice that would benefit the company the most. this is my interpretation but since regis mentions milva has been a little feisty in consultation (she wouldn’t give him the date of her last period... lol), i feel like he could sense that she was really stressed out about this and although she initially made the choice to have an abortion, she may not have been thinking for her own self, rather letting the priorities of the company come first before her own wants.
in this moment, geralt realizes exactly why she has come on the journey, he mentions how she was willing to sacrifice her own child for his, etc. so, geralt needs to talk to her in that moment to tell her that he doesn’t expect her to do anything just so she can be more of an “asset” to the company, to tell her that she is his friend first and comrade-in-arms second, because milva is very loyal and also headstrong and would have done anything for geralt and the company. milva in general also wants to be “useful” because she has internalized misogyny from how she was raised, she doesn’t want to be “useless” like she was taught women are ‘supposed’ to be, as is shown in their conversation.
so geralt talks to her and she makes the choice not to have an abortion after all, because after talking to geralt, she doesn’t feel like she has to prioritize geralt’s needs and the company’s needs over what she wants.
2) “Maybe I'm the only one who noticed a lot of "c*nservative" ideas in books.
Secondly, Geralt insistently refuses to call it "medicament" but prefers the word "agent."”
He also demands that Jaskier shut up when he supports Cahir that "only a woman decides." Pro-life vibes, or is it just me?
We also can't ignore the fact that Geralt is very concerned about his infertility.
in my opinion i think the author-intention was to set up a conversation in which a rhetorical question is asked, which will 100% be answered with a resounding positive, a “yes” all around. regis asks the company, because he’s a character so he can be poised as the author wants to propose a question like, “what are your thoughts on abortion,” which allows the rest of the characters to respond “it’s a woman’s right to choose for herself!” in this way, i think that it is very pro-choice... i will agree later on about what you say in other parts of your message, about the conservatism and also centrism in the books, but when it comes to abortion sapkowski imo in the witcher series espoused some pretty pro-choice views. this scene, compounded with the fact that yennefer, the leading female character, performs abortions as part of her job, and also the scene in season of storms with coral and the king of kerack in which he makes a fool of himself in front of her because she assists women with abortions... it’s a topic that’s come up a few times, and all of the times it has been a pro-choice perspective. (again, this is not to say everything in the witcher series is progressive, haha)
in-universe, i suppose you could think of it as that regis was just being coy and asking a rhetorical question also in-universe... such that he was going to give milva the decoction no matter what the men of the company chose, but he just wanted to “ask their opinions” (i.e., tell them what is happening with milva, because it’s a serious subject that needs to be addressed by the company) before, so he could introduce the subject to them (sparing milva of the difficulty of telling them all) and gain their assistance in supporting milva during this time. (random sidenote, but i like how regis acts as a middleground between milva and the rest of the company in this. there are three genders: woman, man, and medical professional. lol).
so yes, i don’t think that the men of the company actually “get to decide” if milva would have an abortion or not - their opinion’s don’t matter. out-of-universem sapkowski probably just wanted to set up a conversation between his characters where they could espouse explicitly pro-choice opinions (dandelion and cahir practically start arguing over if the northern kingdoms or nilfgaardian empire are more pro-choice). in-universe, this was probably more of a way to bring the subject up rather than actually asking for opinions.
i think it may look like there are some pro-life opinions shown by geralt in this conversation at first glance, but there might be something deeper. when he tells dandelion to be quiet when he begins to hound him that “only a woman decides,” i think it’s not because he disagrees with that - rather, that he agrees, but that that isn’t the issue here that he needs to deal with. it IS milva’s decision, everyone is in agreement about that - and that’s precisely the problem, because milva is in a vulnerable emotional state and also a precarious physical environment, and these factors could influence her to go through with the abortion, while in “regular circumstance,” if everything were fine and everyone was safe and they weren’t on a quest to save ciri, she might go through with the pregnancy. so, geralt gets annoyed that dandelion tells him this, because he agrees, he already knows! it’s useless to tell him that, because he already agrees with him, what he really needs to do now is move forward with having an emotional talk with milva, which is difficult for him.
i think the “medicament” / “agent” thing is still a little confusing to me, because i don’t know which one has a negative connotation. to me, it’s a medicament, or a medicine, whic is something that cures an ailment, that has a negative connotation, because it kind of refers to the state of being pregnant as a sickness or illness that needs to be cured? an agent is more like a substance that causes a reaction, i think of that of enzymes that speed up chemical reactions in cells, it causes a certain result to happen - which seems more appropriate in my opinion. but yeah i’m not sure which is the “worse word” to use, or if either are “bad words” to use when it comes to this
3) In general, continuing the theme:
Very many sorceresses also lament the lack of ability to have children, and all of them, even if they had relationships with women, were always looking for the ONE AND ONLY man.
I was too disappointed by the stereotypical representation of women: hatred because of the same outfits/jewelry, thin waists and small portions (remember how Yen and Fringilla eat), eternal gossip, and so on. I mean, women aren't like that, man.
The toxicity of the presented heterosexual relationships has been said a thousand times before me.
Moreover, the same-sex relationships in the book are only female/female shown, but never male/male (a quick and disdainful mention in "Season of Storms"). But even f / f relationships are presented as some not-serious-play; remember how Ciri called it all "fun," talking with Mistle. I see a toxic-masculine culture that sexualizes lesbians and completely denies gays. (This also reminds me of Poland's situation, where the majority of the population is very religious and homophobic.)
Thanks.
very much agree with all of this. in some circumstances, i think the author-intention was to break stereotypes and tropes - such as fringilla and yennefer speaking about oysters in relation to their ‘diets’ ... but then, they are actually talking about oysters in the context of having to teleport from the castle, they are actually speaking about high-intrigue political alliances, not something as silly as diets... but the effect, to me, is lost, because they led into it acting vapid and speaking about diets anyways, and if they used sarcasm in their voices, it wasn’t strong enough coming through the text in my opinion.
similarly, i think he tried to do some of this trope-breaking with the sorceresses overall, how they are all vapid and obsessed with appearance, but actually are the political masterminds behind everything. although he achieved the latter, he did not manage to have the latter negate the former... the intelligent political talks did nothing to “cancel out” the previously-demonstrated vapidness and obsession with femininity, and the way he describes women overall is something to roll the eyes (and the stomach) at. (“triss’ waist measured ‘22′,” oh give me a break lmfao...)
i also agree that although there are technically gay and lesbian characters in the books, none of them are “good representation” - the only ones i can think of are philippa, mistle, and degerlund (season of storms, which you are right in describing as “disdainful”) - all of these characters are violent, none of them ever are shown having a healthy relationship, and their “love” either ‘corrupts others’ (i use that term semi-lightly) or is part of some political manuever. ciri’s time with mistle is that of a ‘youthful violence,’ it is part of her time with the rats, her time reaching into her worst most hateful depths as a person, and it’s presented as something to “heal from.” and we haven’t even mentioned how mistle assaults her in the beginning of it all. this is largely a post for another time, but it’s not a good situation by any means.
i also get super annoyed for this reason when i see people applauding sapkowski for being a “progressive writer.” in my mind, he is not progressive at all, although he has his character espouse some pro-choice views here and there, that is not nearly enough to make up for the fantasy racism/antisemitism, use of antisemitic caricatures to do trope-reversal on, misogyny to do trope-reversal on, and blatantly just Not Good gay and lesbian characters.
in my mind, it’s inappropriate to label him as “progressive,” because he was not writing with diversity and representation in mind. i think a lot of people get confused, because they assume, “oh he included women, so he must have been wanting more representation for women!” ... when he was pretty much just writing for writing’s sake... of his own worldview and biases, nothing special when it comes to representation. and i agree that a lot of conservative ideas slip their way into the books, from my perspective he tries to make some centrist milquetoast statements at times (”don’t be neutral in the face of evil” for example) but wraps it up in literally a fantasy pogrom - which is not something imo for a goyische author to put into their stories. his inspirations at times are clear, and he uses them in manners which can come off as blunt and disrespectful.

Before I start, two disclaimers: One, this is for canon crossover muses (minus one canon genre that I’ll address in another reply). And two, this is by no means exhaustive of the canon ships I’ve written, want to write, or enjoy on this blog. Instead, I’ve chosen ships I’ve written or plotted recently or ships I’ve been more interested in writing as of late. If our ship is not in this list it doesn’t mean I’ve forgotten about it nor do I dislike it.
Now onto the ships:
Sonia/Shirou Emiya (Fate series) - It’s only right this one comes first! Beyond having a writing partner who enjoys a specific brand of angst and will-they-won’t-they, I could already see that Sonia would be attracted to Shirou’s sense of heroism when I watched Unlimited Blade Works. Chest discourse aside, Sonia’s very much attracted to acts of service, a love language she readily performs herself. But seeing it in others, supporting and caring for those who especially need it, that strikes a chord with her. So even pre-Despair, she’s had an affinity for Shirou the more she learned about what he’s endured.
Post-Despair, Queen Sonia lives a tormented existence of wanting to order him out of the Castle and ordering him to shut up and kiss her already. When they first met (well, to Sonia anyway. She doesn’t remember her friend from Japan, Shirou Emiya, yet. Though she’s recalling bits and pieces of certain experiences they’ve shared), she wanted little to do with him and his bitter, condescending attitude. That’s changed the more they’ve begun to warm up to and understand one another, and now it’s taking pretty much all of her resolve and sense of duty not to pin him against the wall and snog him.
She also doesn’t know he was the one who tried to assassinate her. She might not ever find out, and that adds just another angst factor to that relationship.
Sonia/Ryuji Sakamoto (Persona 5) - This ship exists as a favorite for precisely two reasons. 1. I’m exceptionally weak for the poor/bad boy and rich girl trope. It gives me a valid excuse to blast Billy Joel’s Uptown Girl and MC Solaar’s La Belle et Le Bad Boy on repeat for inspiration. 2. I’ve happened to meet two exceptionally talented, wonderful muns who write Ryuji so well. In fact, I’m pretty much convinced that if a mun has Ryuji as a muse, the mun is likely very cool. Romance, friendship, please give me Ryuji and Sonia interactions. They come from two very different worlds and sets of values but they’re also generally upbeat, cheerful people who are equally interested and pleased to learn about one another. I will not deny that this is a similar ship to my favorite Persona 5 canon ship, Ryuji/Haru. But Haru and Sonia have their differences, which leads me to my next ship...
Sonia/Haru Okumura (Persona 5) - I’ve seen P5 protag/Haru and Ryuji/Haru on my dash, but might I offer the Sonia/Haru ship? Best friends, lovers, both? Both are good. But two patient, sweet, and generous girls who became friends quickly and fell in love slowly? Yes, this is a good dynamic. Sonia would have never let Haru marry Sugimura, either. Even if it took quite a lot of persuasion to make that happen (because Haru deserves better and she loves her). They’d have the constant disagreement of coffee vs. tea as a superior beverage, but they’d embrace and love everything about one another, from their strengths to their perceived faults. The luxurious professional lives they both need to lead as CEO and Queen don’t have be stuffy or devoid of fun, not if they have each other to lean on. And speaking of childhood friends to lovers...
Sonia/Sophie Hatter (Howl’s Moving Castle) - Because @madamhatter is Sonia’s first childhood friend turned crush turned lover and I adore their relationship and interactions. Sophie and Sonia have resulted in one of my favorite threads of all time, the oven demon possession. But silliness aside, they both struggle with their respective family dynamics and the pressure to succeed in their various disciplines. Sophie isn’t afraid to be blunt with Sonia and call her out on her bullshit (everything except their growing affections for one another, tbh. Admitting they have crushes on one another? Blasphemy!) and Sonia finds Sophie witty, brilliant, beautiful, kind, and in need of someone who loves her fully and isn’t afraid to remind her of that. With pillow and blanket forts, and British comfort foods shipped in as surprise treats, and always sharing the good scotch.
Besides, Sophie will definitely create Sonia’s wedding attire one day. Why not for their own wedding? It was probably Sophie’s suggestion for adult Princess Sonia to adapt perfectly tailored suits alongside her dresses and skirts for professional occasions, and both of them have some very strong suit game.
You cannot deny two beautiful, powerful women in expert tailoring. Sonia wears hers with high heels, of course.
Those are the main, current ones I’ve been thinking about recently. Though for no reason but pure curiosity, I wonder what Sonia/Saber (Fate series) would look like. I’m not familiar enough with Fate to give Sonia a Fate verse that makes sense, and I’m not great with magic and fantasy combat scenarios. But I think at least writing interactions between these two would be fun to see. Whether friendship or romance, I’m happy with either.

Alright so.
I've been thinking hard, about Royal, just as like.. a whole? There's a lot of things that I like and are appreciative were added (gameplay is like.. a 10/10 now) but there's also things I didn't care for (unpopular opinion, but after the initial excitement was over and I looked back, I realized I actually didn't like the 3rd semester much. I think it doesn't fit the themes of P5 and would've been better suited to P4, since the entire theme of P4 is pursuing the painful truth over beautiful lies, and also everything just goes back to the way it was when they beat Maruki so it's like... what was even the point, yanno? It was also too short; and there was a ton of untapped potential. Like, everybody agrees to help take down the dream world so quickly after Joker tells them it's an illusion with barely any resistance. I DID like how raw and honest Akechi was in the third semester though. That was great.).
In terms of new characters, I absolutely loved Takuto. One of my top 5 Persona antagonists, easily; and I can't wait to hopefully see more content of him. I really liked José, too. My only complaint for him is that nothing is really explained about him? We know he was sent to study humans by some higher up, but other than that, we don't know anything: where he came from, if he was born or created, etc. There's too many loose ends.
And yes, an unpopular opinion again, but I didn't care much for Kasumi (i know, sue me). I think the biggest thing for me was basically her only connections were Joker and Takuto, which would've probably been fine if she was a FeMC, but she's not. She's a new Confidant and party member, so she feels disjointed from the rest of the team, just like Akechi. And it doesn't help that she's pushed as the romance for Joker, either (only having a Showtime with him, calling him Senpai, her entire COSTUME literally looking like a feminine version of his; which again, if she were a FeMC, okay, cool, because they're parallel versions of each other if PQ2 has given us any info- [cuz Minato and Kotone were just parallel versions of each other], but she's not a FeMC. She just looks up to Joker so much that her idea of rebellion IS him: which, if they had changed her outfit to fit her OWN idea of rebellion after she decided to stop relying on him and stand in her own strength, my feathers wouldn't be so ruffled about it. But they don't. Also, while her backstory is sympathetic (I genuinely did feel sorry for her), Kasumi/Sumire herself is written in a completely sympathetic light as well. Sumire can be very selfish and cowardly and these are good character flaws if they are PRESENTED as flaws. But the problem is, they're not. Even when she's yelling that it's her fault things are the way they are, you just feel bad for her. Like, with the other members of the team, they have moments where they're wrong, and they're just.. wrong. No excuses, no justification. Sumire doesn't get that, it's like "Oh she's being selfish and cowardly but it's because she hates herself so much she wants to be somebody else please feel bad for her." And as "Kasumi", she's too perfect (granted, I'm willing to give this one a pass because she saw her sister as perfect so when she changed her cognition to be her, she was perfect too); and we don't get to know her as Sumire for very long, which is another gripe I have: it would've been great to get to know her real self better, but her perfect self was pushed on so much it kind of ruins her for me, personally; especially since the game unabashedly seems to favor her.
But uh, I don't hate her or anything. I just think she was a character that had a lot of potential that ultimately got thrown out the window. That being said, after thinking long and hard, I don't think I'll be interacting with Kasumi muses, at least for now. That may change if I change my opinion on her, so this may not be permanent, but for now, she doesn't interest me. You're free to still follow me if you're a Kasumi roleplayer, and talk to me; cuz I don't want to like...drive anybody away, and we can be friends OOC, but just know that as of right now, my Ann (or any of my other muses, for that matter) will not be interacting with Kasumi due to lack of interest in her character.
Oh, also. Joker x Kasumi/Sumire makes me really uncomfortable due to how quickly you're able to pursue her after she basically has an emotional breakdown and loses her sister and all that (she needs time to heal!!!!) so please tag it if it's on your blog; thank you.
If you read through all of this, thank you very much; and have a lovely day. ♡

Top 5 persona songs
Will it all be P3 songs? ...maybe. ...okay, so this list is all P3 based songs... Sorry? ...okay, this is really hard, because part way through I remembered the PQ games, and that music all rocks. Not only that, just make this all Lotus Juice? Maybe a lot of Lotus Juice. Ahhhh. (Wow, I guess I didn’t enjoy the P5 music as I used to...)
キミの記憶 (Kimi no Kioku/“Memories of You”): Considering the name of this blog, I think the top two songs would be obvious, but this one won over Burn My Dread for a few reasons. One of them is that my mom recognizes this song when it gets played because I had her watch a bit of a Persona Bomb concert earlier this year, and she decided to remember that one. Plus, this song is like all the hurty, P3 feels. I love it so much.
Burn My Dread: There’s absolutely no reason a favorite songs list from Persona should not have this song on it. I mean, unless they haven’t played P3 and haven’t heard it. It’s soooo good. It gives me so many feels, but more fight-y feels than キミの記憶 does. I was so happy I was able to make this tumblr have combination of both of these songs.
Battle Hymn of the Soul: ...what do you mean I have a P3 bias? I know not what you say. I blame this one all on P3D. Because yes, this is a hella strong song, but then they made a remix of it for Shinji’s dance. I was gone. I used it as a name for an important P3 fic I started, that maybe I’ll finish someday...
Our Moment: Aha! Not P3! ...just P3D. Look, this song gives me nostalgia for a game I only played for the first time last year? Like wow, the nostalgia it must give to the people that played back when it came out. Not only that, I’m hanging on to the hope that this song and the whole P3D game in general is proof Atlus wants to make a P3 Remake.
Light the Fire Up in the Night: What, more Lotus Juice? What, no, what are talking about... I may not have finished PQ1 because it’s terribly unbalanced (PQ2 figured that, and it was perfect ahhh), but I really love the battle theme. ...but also the version Akihiko dances to is pretty awesome in P3D. Get pumped up!
Now, honorable mentions because this was haaaaard: Nothing is Promised (PQ2), Invitation to Freedom (PQ2, P5 Side),  Wait and See (PQ2, P3 Side), Pull the Trigger (PQ2, P3P Side), Moonlight Serendipity (P3D), Mass Destruction (P3), Soul Phrase (P3P), Wiping All Out (P3P), Sky’s Limit (P4A), Pursuing My True Self (P4), Reaching Out to the Truth (P4), Time to Make History (P4)...

Yesterday was a ride for sure. Today's more chill. Then it's time to bring some positivity into this blog? With a bit of salt but anyway.
Persona 5 Royal hype is real. It is real and there's much less salt than I expected.
First of all... MY BOI GORO HAS HIS CHANCE TO BE SAVED! His lines in the beginning of the first PV sound like it's when he's defeated as Black Mask and Joker is sparing him. Also in one anime cutscene behind Haru there's something suspiciously striped and with the same color scheme as Goro's Black Mask suit. So I hope they'll give us choice to save him at least. He deserves better.
New events! Thank god we're going to have some group hangouts. Even tho it might be golden-style with zero actual impact on the plot I would love to see more of my kids and I hope we'll see more screen time for everyone. Just give Haru attention and don't forget about the first half of the team please.
New sprites, new double attacks (reminds me of unison in PQ2) and Futaba's All Out Attack, I've waited for this one for so long. Also new mechanics would've be enough to make me play this game after clearing original P5 if I had PS4.
Now, time for spicy info.
THERE WAS WAKABA??? THERE LITERALLY IS A NEW SCREENSHOT DURING WINTER THAT SHOWS US BACK OF SOMEONE WHO LOOKS LIKE WAKABA, WHAT THE FUCK???
THE IKEMEN/HANDSOME GUY SPEAKS JUST LIKE MORGANA. HE SAYS WAGAHAI AND ANN-DONO. IS IT HIS REAL FORM OR IS IT SOME KIND OF FAKE pls don't be another god pls don't be another god
SINCE WE'LL GET NEW EVENTS FOR JANUARY-APRIL AND EVEN CONFIRMED 1/1 DOES THAT MEAN THAT REN ISN'T IN JAIL??? AND WITH GORO BEING ALIVE IS THAT POSSIBLE THAT HE'S ARRESTED INSTEAD OF REN???
Now a little bit of salt. Kasumi.
While I speculated her to be FeMC/confidant/new_character_for_a_spinoff she's a new thief. I'm neutral with her normal design. I'm worried about her being kinda forced into the plot and/or stealing possible screen time of others. Also I kinda don't want to see her as hinted canon love interest. While I miss canon hints on OTPs I just don't want her to be like Marie. I just hope that she's not Aeon, human and some normal girl. Also I hope she won't join during Kamoshida's arc (even tho it would make sense). Her outfit as thief is too similar to Joker for me and that's worrying.
On a positive note I love this outfit to death, new favourite PT suit found! That's totally my style and I would kill for that costume. Also it fits well with her gymnastics theme so if anyone will say "sexualisation/objectifying" I would fight you.
P5S is causing mixed feelings. While I'm glad that it's not just a port of P5 to Switch, I'm a bit concerned about playable characters. It heavily reminds me of One Piece Pirate Warriors series, while gameplay there can get old really fast what kept me playing was huge amount of characters. And while I want them to get P3 and P4 kids for this game I don't want to see their adult versions and make those games part of a canon timeline. I'll be fine with just P5 cast if it's different from One Piece. So it's better than just Switch port but I have a few questions.
So while I still don't trust Kasumi (but I really want her to be good) other aspects of the game make me so excited that I can't wait for P5R and more info about P5S, time to make time machine using microwave and a phone.

Mobile Rules;
Hello! I'm the Mun. My name is Nines, you can also call me 9s for short. I also answer to Dito or Lahore. It's great to meet you. Before I move on to the rules, here are some general facts:
-I'm in my mid 20s.
-I have going on 10+ years of RP experience.
-I'm a man, so He/Him/His pronouns please!
-I have a discord, but I don't roleplay on it. Ask if you want it!
-I don't like ooc drama, please avoid involving me in it.
-I took a year long hiatus from writing, but I'm back now.
-The 'About' page is long, the 'Headcanons' page is more digestable, neither are required reading, just a heads up!
___
These are my rules, there's no passcode or anything, I'll know if they haven't been read in time regardless. If you have a passcode, I'll send it, don't worry. You don't have to be familiar with Persona at all to roleplay with this muse! Don't worry about it. I haven't played anything other than P5, but plan on starting P4 next, so that's the extent of where I am.
-If your muse exists in a universe where Persona 5 exists as a game, they're totally free to recognize Joker and behave accordingly! You don't need to ask.
-This blog features in-person interactions, but is also run as if it's Joker's blog, please do not treat text posts and the like which Joker makes as being in-person conversation!
- If your muse is also a Persona muse, this Joker should be treated like a different Joker from your muse's own, they're free to mistake him for their Joker of course! But this guy exists in a single verse, if you want your muse to be from his universe, feel free to discuss it with me but please don't just assume!
- I will not roleplay with anyone under the age of 18. Persona 5 is rated M for Mature, and has a variety of themes I'm not comfortable exposing minors to. Furthermore, it's for my own comfort, I like knowing everyone following me is of age so I don't need to worry about what my muse is doing or saying in that regard. Thank you for understanding.
- To the same end as the above, if you don't have 18+ or something similar somewhere on your blog, 99% of the time I will assume you are under the age of 18, and will not follow back. Feel free to confirm upon following that you aren't a minor if that's easier for you! That said, Underage muses are fine, underage Muns are not.
- I don't tolerate ooc Racism, Sexism, Fascism or anything of the sort, common sense and all. I'm a mixed race dude on the LGBTQ+ spectrum, so believe me when I say you won't like me any more than I like you.
- I'm not comfortable with 'Fandom Antis' or anyone who thinks it's appropriate to harrass or send death threats to people over fictional content. If you're the kind of person who threatens others over fictional content with death or violence, I'm afraid we aren't going to get along. Please keep yourself safe by blocking and moving on.
- The usual rules apply, don't godmod, don't powerplay, and don't use ooc information you aquire from these pages or headcanon posts ic unless your character has a reason to know that information. If in doubt, pass it by me.
- This blog is 'Single Verse', Joker is capable of using the metaverse to slip into a variety of universes in order to be played with a variety of fandoms and ocs, but it's always the same Joker. This iteration has a strong polyamorous lean however, making this blog 'Single Verse, Multi-Ship', things regarding that can be worked out in character if Joker ever enters a relationship. That being said...
- Please do not force ships on me! I have no issue with your muse falling for Joker and that being a source of in-character drama/angst if it isn't returned, but don't powerplay by telling me how Joker feels, don't guilt me if Joker doesn't return your muse's feelings, etc. You don't need to contact me ooc for your muse to have feelings or for them to try to start something with Joker, don't worry, I'm very very relaxed in just about every way.
- If you don't like how I write Joker, that's fine! Not everyone is gonna mesh, go ahead and block or softblock and we can move on. But don't send me hate anonymous or otherwise, it's just roleplay, just for fun. Let's be kind to one another.
- Anything NSFW will be under a cut and properly tagged, no exceptions.
- If you have a trigger that I know will feature a lot on this blog, I likely won’t follow back for your sake, it isn’t to make my life easier, or because I’m stubborn, I’m happy to tag triggers, but if something is a big theme here, or if the implications of something are a big theme here, or if there’s a major theme adjacent to the theme you don’t like here, it’s going to be very, very stressful for both of us if I try to make sure you never see it. It’s why I really really recommend looking over all the pages before you follow, or at least the Rules, Headcanons, and Relationships pages. The about is long and mostly covered in HCs anyway.
- I think that's it, if you wanna know my stance on anything else, feel free to ask! But if I think you're trying to bait me into making a fool of myself I may not answer.

damn... you hate p5 that much?
I don't think what I expressed in that post was my hatred (I mean I do hate the game, but I can't ignore it either so I'm stuck in a catch 22). It’s more my issues/critiques/frustrations with the game itself where the game is flawed, rather than some irrational hatred.
(under the cut just to save space on my blog)
First the philosophy, ideologies, and themes of the game. The game actually doesn't really go into detail on it's themes unlike past games, and while past games (mostly P3/4) shove it down your throat, they at least acknowledge other sides of their themes/messages and the goods and bads of it all. P5? It might allude to an interesting topic like 2 or 3 times in the whole 100 hour game, but it's never dove into deeply. They just say "it's for freedom" or "our justice is just" without really going into it or....justifying (pun? not intended) it.
Goro at the beginning of the game claims the PT aren’t just, but doesn’t really go into it all that much, or more like....He brings up some points, but the game itself is like “Oh man this seems really interesting! Too bad we aren’t gonna go into it! :D” And then the rest of the game, both rando people and our cast members, go around just stating that the PT are just like it’s a fact....but nothing is really proven, there was no real argument made, and what could be considered an argument actually has some flaws/holes in it but no one bothers to look into it.
Then there’s Goro’s confrontation. He brings up two points in passing (again in freaking passing) that I think were meant to substitute any actual debate that were to be made. It was, what I assumed, his “freedom” vs the MC’s “freedom” and maybe the different types of freedom....BUT THEY NEVER GO INTO IT! The other thing he brings up is the power of bonds vs no bonds, but again he doesn’t get into it (wouldn’t be surprised if Atlus ran out of things to say considering they already did that with Sho, still doesn’t mean you SHOULDN’T GO INTO IT, not everyone has played Ultimax Atlus).
This also ties into my issues of Goro vs Adachi confrontation, the Goro one is just him doing a villain speech on why he did it and his sob backstory, something we are suddenly supposed to sympathize with and then the only thing we really hear from the PT is “That’s just stupid/wrong” when like.....yeah but care to explain why? Goro’s issues are more emotional and skewed, just saying he’s wrong is just gonna make him feel like he’s being invalidated, it’s not gonna change his gd mind. Adachi on the other hand, while he has a villain speech too, he doesn’t talk about a sob backstory (it’s hinted at, as to possibly explain how he got to that point, but it’s not the main focus). Instead he’s spouting ideologies at the team. The team do say “no that’s wrong” throughout his argument (and that’s what it is, an argument), but it’s after he’s done that the team then take his argument and rip it to shreds. They are fighting ideals with ideals in this case (even Sho’s story does that, and that game is a hot mess).
So yeah that’s my issues with how the philosophy/message/ideologies were handled. The other is the inconsistency (I’mma just focus on the ones with P5 vs the rest of the series as opposed to the one’s within P5) or unexplained rules. And I already stated them in the last ask tho, and I guess Shadow Selves=evil person cause they are in the Metaverse is more something to do with the fandom than P5 (tho I guess I could blame P5 for making that misconception). Even tho literally everyone in the world has a Shadow Self (unless they are suffering from Apathy Syndrome). Futaba’s is just an annoyance everytime she mentions it tho, I get what she means but we literally did nothing of the sort, so her say we did is just annoying (I already have an issue with how her Palace seems to be an exception to the falling apart rule and how the treasure works so this doesn’t help). So yeah, Futaba’s is part of the “unexplained but convenient rule we decided to throw in just now cause it’s convenient but we won’t explain it” thing. >.>
So yeah I’m not pointing these flaws out cause I came in irrationally hating P5, these are the flaws that I realized as I played P5 (a game I was very excited for and thought I would love), which in turn made me very pissed and then hate the game because this and other stuff just kept....piling up....to the point I can’t ignore it (but pointing it out helps me think on how they could’ve made P5 better/fixed its issues so it’s not just a source of rage, it’s me also genuinely wanting P5 to be better than it is....it’s a very complex relationship sadly ;w;)..... But again I can’t just....not play P5 or indulge in it, I need to keep up with the universe.....so I’m stuck with it.

Kind of a Review of Persona Super Live P-Sound Bomb Concert
Sorry did I say daily posts? I mean bimonthly posts. Sorry for the confusion. For real though, it was a combination of time going by way too fast, me enjoying a lot of games, and interesting conversations of discord that prevented me from making content for the blog. I will say that I shall try to at least post something every week for sure, or every couple of days.. I rather not have this blog be completely empty all the time. I’m only really typing this now because my internet was being quite slow and I figured I might as well work on something that just involves typing up stuff so here I am! I do have a few things in mind I want to talk about out of the stuff I played over the past two months or so since I made this blog. Not sure what order I will talk about stuff in nor how vague or detailed some of my opinion pieces will be. I think if I just feel like talking about something at the moment, I’ll talk about it. I do think one recent thing in mind that was absolutely super cool was the Persona Super Live P-Sound Bomb concert that took place August 2nd in Japan. There was a livestream of the concert which I didn’t watch but a few people put up video’s of the stream onto youtube. The one’s I’ve seen are gone now due to copyright stuff I’m sure, and that you had to pay to watch the livestream of it.
This was a concert dedicated to performing the amazing music from the awesome RPG series, Persona, though specifically only from pPersona 3,4, and 5, and a few songs from a few spin off games. Now. One thing I have to say about this concert is that
IT’S AMAZING!
Just especially spectacular in every regard.I will also go ahead and say I will be possibly spoiling song titles but won’t be going into detail of actual specific story beats of the games. Just like the Persona games though, the presentation and style of the concert was top-tier, with really great use of lighting during the songs, such as it being very bright and flashy with the more upbeat songs while being more muted, still, and subtle with the quieter, more calm songs. The lighting was especially great when playing Rivers in the Desert and The Almighty, with lots of use of darkness mixed with a multitude of flashing lights to match up with the music. Not only that, there was people dancing along with the songs, cosplaying some of the characters from P3 to P5. It was definitely amusing watching Haru, Anne, Makoto, Yosuke, and Yukari getting jiggy with it and being so animated with the music. Their dancing was not outstanding but they demonstrated a ton of energy and had pretty top-notch costumes which made up for their dancing chops.
There was also a really cool motif of people dressed in outfits that made them look like velvet ghosts or spirits who came out, matching the color of whatever game the current song was playing. For example, blue when it was Persona 3, Yellow for Persona 4, and Red for Persona 5. They usually rushed around in circular patterns, creating a cool, wavy, ethereal effect on the stage with them weaving through the performers and dancers. The last appreciation of the effects for this concert was the glowsticks everyone in the audience had which had a very prominent glow to them and usually matched the colors of the game, as well as other colors from time to time. They also had strobe effects as well, flashing many times with different colors and was a nice indicator of both audience participation with them waving around, as well showing how many people were there. It sure seemed like practically hundreds and hundreds of persona lovers from the looks of it.
Presentation aside, which was bomb.com, all of the songs being played were amazing as well. The concert had all of the lead singers from each of the three main Persona games present, dressed in an outfit representing the school uniform from their respective games. The song quality, even from the live stream, was amazing, hearing every single amazing instrument come into play, as well a lot of flavor and variation that made each song all the more enjoyable. I also appreciated how there was no particular order to the music it seemed, maybe playing twoPersona 3 songs in a row before going to a Persona 5 battle theme and then to the JUnes theme from Persona 4. (This is just an example). This led to a variety of different tunes and thus different rhythms, tempos, sounds, instruments being used, which made the whole con extremely fresh. The singers, just like the animators, ere extremely animated and greatly into their performances, singing their hearts out with very evident emotion. Especially when it came to the more happier or more heart-felt music.
Lyn Inaizumi, the singer for Persona 5, was especially amazing because of her bomb.com high notes that seemed pretty perfect to me or her freestyling at some point of the songs with yeah’s and oooh’s. Though some of her lyrics didn’t come out as clearly (though that’s the case for most of the persona songs with lyrics so it’s not too bad), her energy and enjoyment was very nice to see. Along with the concert was a blast of amazing nostalgia with hearing mass destruction, The Battle for Everyone’s Souls, Heartbreak, and the Persona 4 intro songs again since I have not heard them in quite a while. Especially to hear them in it’s awesome live-concert form. Shogi Meguro, the lead sound designer and musician of Persona, was just absolutely rocking, the camera showing him multiple times doing his amazing thing.
There was a few pauses in the music of the singers and other people talking, which I skipped, but during these they also announced Persona Q 2, likely having Persona 5 counters in it. , as well trailers for Persona Dancing Moon Night and Dancing Star Night. These are new rhythm games of Persona 3 and 5 to join it’s Persona 4 counterpart, Dancing All Night. Not only is there amazing music in this concert but extremely cool announcements as well.
All in all, it was extremely enjoyable concert and one you should definitely give a gander if you love Persona 3-5 and it’s music. I am sure there is a video of the concert somewhere out there you can find! Even if you just appreciate music in general, I do believe you will get a kick out of it. I am definitely going to be giving this concert a good listen a few more times during this year I am sure since it’s so dang good.
