I used to believe that bugs were little robots. Lots of people do, it’s the prevailing opinion next to “i’ve never thought about it”. Then I watched a mother wasp mourn her child. An animal who stretched after a nap and did little dances when her daughters returned from flight. Now she is opening her fourth capped hexagon and finding a pale white stillborn. She grasps the baby gently in her jaws and does not put it down for over 24 hours. Carries her loss, pacing back and forth the length of her enclosure. It is not the behavior of a robot.

So I think about the prior odds. Scenario A, bugs are robots. Why do I believe that? Because they are so tiny. Because if they are not robots then my world [where “insect exterminator” is a job title and I can buy a can of mass death at home depot] does not make sense. They must be insignificant.

The wasp makes me reconsider. Scenario B: her kind are like mine. cry when we are sad and happy when we play. Has this feature evolved many times? Or is it common to all the children of the precambrian worm? Every shark in the ocean swimming in their own feelings. Every bird and every cat knowing the thrill of being alive? The wasp made me realize that my whole moral picture is wrong. We’re not alone on this planet,

I have and do eat bug, on occasion. But I confess, I try to keep my goblin son from eating bug whenever I can, mostly because bug is not so tasty raw, and he has limited faculties of logical thought.

#about me #bug #technically I mostly have eaten orthoptera and lepidoptera #and the hemipterans I have eaten were NOT good and NOT intentional #but I suspect that anon was not trying to be technical #so #also for clarity: my son is currently 17 months old #I very much hope that his ability to discern whether or not it is wise to eat bug will increase substantially in the near future #though recent behaviour leads me to doubt #toddlers gonna toddl I guess

i swear the next time i see a post making fun of summer enjoyers i'm gonna become the joker. i currently can't go out to get food or go grocery shopping because my whole town is encased in slippery-ass ice and it's not safe to drive anywhere. i had to cancel plans i'd been looking forward to for months because of extreme cold. on colder days i can't go outside without putting on a sensorily hellish amount of thick layers. i get seasonal depression because i have to go to work in a windowless office and the sun sets before i can go home. fuck winter. give me my light and warmth back

#and yes i know summer is hot and has bugs and stuff #when i'm not in a windowless office my job has me doing fieldwork #including in the summer when it's hot and the sun is beating on me and i'm getting eaten by bugs and drenched in sweat #and i have to fight thick vegetation for every step #i know the worst summer has to offer probably more than most people #and i still prefer it to winter
