do you have any reading recs for someone who wants to learn about bugs?

Oh absolutely! There are so many lovely popular science entomology books. I'll name a few, but there are tons more for specific bugs you might be interested in if you search around! I've got four in mind that I've read that I think provide some nice variety.

Buzz, Sting, Bite by Anne Sverdrup-Thygeson

I so enjoyed this book. It's not about any specific insect, but it's a delightful tour of a bunch of cool adaptations and the like in the arthropod world. I think it'd be a good choice if you're new to the whole thing as it's fun, light, and has lots of different groups represented. I learned about a wild interaction between ground-nesting bees and blister beetles from this one that I ended up making a little video on.

Never Home Alone by Rob Dunn

I love the household ecosystem! This book isn't just arthropods — it also covers bacteria and other organisms you might find in your home. But it's so neat! And tonally it's refreshing because it doesn't attempt to scare you about what's in your house. Rather, it invites you to engage with your fellow home inhabitants.

Honeybee Democracy by Thomas D. Seeley

This is such an interesting deep dive into honey bee behavior. I think a lot of people know bees are smart but don't quite realize how complex their social behavior gets. I also am charmed by any book that includes a chapter on incorporating another animal's behavior as a lesson to our own human society (the last chapter is basically "what can we learn from the voting system of honey bees?", an adorable thought).

The Sting of the Wild by Justin O. Schmidt

The Schmidt pain scale is a bit infamous. Dr. Schmidt made a whole collection of insects sting him, and rated them on a scale based on the pain he felt. With descriptions like "someone has fired a staple into your cheek," it's definitely not the most objective, but it is a good time. And following his journey getting stung by everything (including his grad students that followed in his footsteps in some very funny ways) is entertaining.

a disclaimer to start with: I hc the Dudes as being a DID system but i think their dynamic can fly either way

initially P1 and P3 do not get along. P1 doesn't vibe with P3's blasé attitude and the way he'll just go along with whatever anyone asks of him because he just doesn't give a shit, or he thinks it'd be funny if he did.

on the flip side of that, though, is that P1 comes to respect the way that P3 is basically an immovable object. he cannot be shaken or deterred no matter what happens. he'll just deal with it in the most casual can-do attitude known to man -- a stark opposite to P1 encountering hardship which means praising the lord and passing the ammunition

basically they're the unstoppable force + immovable object couple that will absolutely wreck shop if they have to

also, while P3 doesn't feed P1's paranoia and delusions he also doesn't try to dismiss or challenge them. he goes the route of "well, if the government's spying on us I hope they enjoy watching me laugh at dumb reality TV" which works surprisingly well at calming P1 down because he says it with so much confidence. he just feels safer all around with P3 there

P1 comes to rely on P3 for comfort and company, and P3 starts to gravitate towards feeling protective of P1 as he develops a sort of "this one's mine" sentiment.

his protectiveness of P1 manifests in the way that he wants P1 to feel included. he makes sure that he is heard - quit mumbling already! - and that he's not left out of things because of his tendency to withdraw and isolate.

they also kiss and make out, to the everlasting joy of P1's touch-starvation. P3 is the best kisser out of all the Dudes and I will not move from this stance

I have an outstanding ask for an Adam/Fergus fanfic idea that I really love and am determined to write. So I just wanted to say thank you to whoever sent it (I LOVE receiving prompts - and it’s such a confidence boost about my writing ♥️), and to say I haven’t forgotten it and I’m working on it (even if the ‘writing’ is mostly in my head at the moment 😅)

Okay OBVIOUSLY Topsy has to be my fav, it's like your magnum opus! But aside from that, RRR, Date Night, and A Formal Affair should be mentioned because I really love those and will sometimes go back and reread them ❤️

Topsy is the leviathan. It's been such a journey and its still going but I love looking back at how far the characters have come and I feel like we're slowly coming around to the point where everyone will be able to see where these two are going. They've still got issues. So many issues. But they're trying, and its starting to feel more and more like a serious relationship where they are going to be willing to commit to not just fucking on every available surface and actually face what its going to take for a career supervillain and a career reporter to build a longterm relationship with one another. What are they each willing to sacrifice? And is the relationship going to be something they both want enough to make those changes and work together to figure out.

Megamind can't leave, and villainy has no halfway point. If Roxanne wants to join him she can't dip a toe in and change her mind later. And she's not a person who deals well with being boxed in.

(what she is good with, and what skills she can bring is something I am VERY excited to start getting into).

I dearly love it and I'm glad you do too! But I don't know how you managed to pick the three I reread the most as well! Especially RRR that one had zero downtime between posting and reading when normally I have to take a few months before I can look at it with the editing brain switched off.

RRR I think might be my favourite smut I've ever written? There's something so fun and open and joyous about it? Without the weight of the emotions is kind of how I think about it? Megamind and Roxanne, once they reach the point where they both actively and openly agree they want to sleep together there's a trust between them that feels real and rock solid and they can just relax and have fun and be silly with it. Plus its a loveletter to fanart. Because fanartists deserve more love.

Date Night. Wow remember when I thought I was only going to have one explicit fic? What an innocent Bug I was...But the fake dating I don't want to trust you but we have to work together and Roxanne being absolutely feral were both so much fun to write And the smut of course was hot AF.

I have a real fondness for setting some things very early in their "relationship". Anything under two years tends to be high feral bitey untrustworthy and there is So Much fun to be had in that zone.

A Formal Affair. Oh man someday I will go back and add more to that 'verse. I don't write Metro Man often but sometimes I just get a glimpse and he's even more alien than Megamind. He wants so differently that its fascinating to stick my fingers in and wriggle them around to see what it stirs up.

I definitely spend more time writing than reading for sure, even if I don’t do as much writing right now, it’s still more than I’m reading. (And I am still writing quite a bit it’s more of a question of finishing and posting things really.) I’m known among friends to be absolutely terrible at reading any long, multi chapter fics while having written an almost 100k word multi chapter fic myself. It’s a struggle.

I really wish I could be one of these people that sleeps under a mountain of cosy blankets, but I run super hot and my body is rubbish at regulating temperature so at most I can get away two when it’s really cold.

8. What’s your favorite band/artist?

I’m not sure I could pick just one! It definitely varies, depending on my mood – I tend to listen to something on repeat loads, and then get bored of it for a while, move onto something else, and then go back to the original thing again (anyone who gets in the car with me is so lucky..! 😂). I’m definitely going through a Bastille phase at the moment.

Purple – I'm probably not describing this well but I just love all the different shades of purple that appear when blue and pink gets splashed together in like a watercolour effect.

32. If you could go anywhere right now, where would you go?

Norway – I had one of the best holidays of my life there, we were so lucky to get to go, saw pretty much everything we wanted to see, it was snowing, and cold and I was just so happy there 🥰

Do you take care of bug types yourself? If so, which ones and since when? Have you ever hatched and raised a bug type pokemon?

I do! My Pokémon are Scizor, Yanmega, Butterfree, Beedrill, Vespiquen, Pinsir, Heracross, Shedinja, and a whole lot of Combee! I haven't hatched and raised any Pokémon myself, but many of my Combee have been with me since they hatched. Vespiquen and the other Combee do most of the raising, though!
