This is going to be long and barely coherent/word salady but here you go friend Merin :)

Okay so... Deck of Phoenix. Prefacing this with with the fact DoP's message is about finding your own way to deal with trauma of all kinds. All of the characters have their own trauma and deal with it in different ways for better or worse LOL! LMAO! The main 6 we have for the cast are Neptune, Vikki, Teresa, Twilip, Ichigo and Salem. Salem is Ollie's OC that got absorbed into the story and became one of the linchpins in Ichigo's backstory (Childhood friends who were kinda romantic then shit happened and then OUAHGAHFDHGgeF anyways)

The magic system in the story is really complicated to explain because it really only makes sense in my brain at the moment and it's supposed to be universal across many different alien worlds :) Hehe! Did I mention this is a fantasy sci-fi? In the way of a fantasy world in a sci-fi setting!!! HEHEHHE!

Every person/soul is born with an ability that aligns with two sigils (magic types) and it can range from something extremely powerful and useful to something that never even manifests. An example of the latter would be a character we have; she seemed powerless until she died because her power was to revive permanently when brought back by a necromancer. Back to the main characters! Neptune canonically has schizophrenia, he has the ability to see the future of someone when he looks them in the eyes, which is how the story starts and also how he finds out he saves the universe from an evil tyrant called Paradox (Name might be temporary, idk lol) But yeah he has a character arc that might be spoilers so i'll explain on discord but it makes his schizophrenia so so soooo much worse <3 <- Projecting my problems onto him. (Also he is the only human in the group)

Vikki's powers are under construction but! She is basically the glue holding the crew together and is a satyress :3 She likes ballet and is the sweetest person you'll ever meet unless you get on her bad side HFGJEHFVQ Also she's built like a centaur and it's so cool to meee cuz I love drawing non-human characters

Teresa is like if Doc was a Loverboy and also a necromancer >:) I'm thinking about giving her the weird gender swag just to make one of the others the only cis person in the group TKYURLF (Twilip) Xe's an alien from a desert planet and is kinda a cyclops lynx/kangaroo mouse and she kinda looks like a vortigaunt now that I think about it..

Twilip. How do I even explain... He's like if Boomer (bubby x coomer) was a person tbh.. Cranky old man who gives tutorials and worked at a library and he misses his late wife so so much :( BUT he has a swag ass pen that can make drawings come to life and he's about the size of a cat btw if you even care <3 /ref

Ichigo... WHERE DO I START. Ichigo's been our OC since we were a KID! So they technically have the deepest lore due to sheer time scale soooo.. They use any pronouns with a preference for they/them and ze/zir and zir sooo everything to me <3 Imagine Leading Light with cloud's buster blade and soooo many more insecurities... Yea :) I can't even begin to dive into their backstory because I will be here FOREVER but long story short, canon system allegory with being 3 souls meshed into one body by the US government to be a super soldier (A human, an alien, and an inter dimensional being) and the alien part is destined to destroy the universe but that's beside the point! Teehee!

For Salem I suggest asking Ollie because I don't wanna misinterpret anything about him <3

Technically Ets but that feels like cheating

I have a character that's part of a project I'm doing with irl friends called Bubbie. It's whole deal is it's a small, fucked up little creature who lives in the MC's closet and occasionally screams at them and also is a living representation of MC's insecurities. It looks like if you gave a two year old a couple of skeletons, told them to build a single human, and then wrapped that creation in bubble wrap. And then stuck googly eyes all over it. Except horrifying.

18. Do you dislike any of your OCs?

Hard to say. I don't think I genuinely dislike any of them. There's always times where I'm still working on the OC where I don't really like them, but that's fixed by developing the character or changing some details. And of course, I talk about how much I hate some of my OCs because they're stupid or horrible people, but it's always in good nature.

The few OCs I dislike are because I haven't thought much about them. I have a set from a few years ago who dealt with death, the afterlife, the emotional rollercoaster of dying young and slowly losing who you are during your afterlife, peer pressure/possession, and a girlboss god of death. However, this was written at a time when I wasn't very good at dealing with these things! So they're not very good and I dislike that as a result. But now that I've looked into/experienced these topics more, I want to go back and fix it. When will that happen? Hell of I know, it's up to the fates.

Hi Saruin! May I know who’s your favourite Sim / OC atm and can you tell me abt them? <3

I was encouraged to talk more about my ocs so this came at the perfect time. I don't have many made right now (most of the sims I use are just models) but I can tell you a bit about my fav at the moment:

This absolute chicken nugget is Bo-Bae Tsukko (nickname Bubby). Is male but will respond to she/her or he/him pronouns (never they/them). Is feminine presenting and people regularly mis-genders her but she doesn't care. Refers to herself in third person exclusively and her personality can best be described as 'No Thoughts, Head Empty'.

She began as a character I drew a lot in college but then left behind cause my artistic muse fizzled out after so many art classes. But then my bff started writing a story and needed a few characters so I lent him Bubby + a lot more, and now she's got so much lore behind her it's crazy. I created her in the sims to really visualize how I wanted her to appear, and since I don't draw as much anymore I felt it was the perfect medium to bring her and a few of my other ocs to life.

She's a little gremlin but is fiercely protective of her family and this thing:

though he'll never know it cause she's also kinda tsundere when it comes to him. His name is Iscariot (Riot for short) and he's been in love with Bubby for years. She takes advantage of that but he doesn't care since he's literally obsessed with her. @.@

my favorite little freak gotta be nick, my main crackshot oc... I do have a bunch of headcanons abt him that I enjoy :]

unnaturally sharp teeth: tends to bite and chews on things a lot (pencils, straws, etc) (all are shredded by the time he is done with them)

freakishly flexible... enjoys using it to his advantage and scaring people for funsies! or just sleeping in odd places cause he can cram himself in just about anywhere

what I call his "kitty qualities" ... has a few quirks about him that align with a cat; eyes shine from a flashlight, taking a nap in the sun is optimal (toasty), would probably go after a red laser dot given the chance, eyes get big and round if he sees something he likes (I usually draw him with tiny pupils so) ... stuff like that

he's very good at wood carving !! makes small little wooden trinkets, ornaments, etc.. likes giving them to his friends as gifts :] !!

he bakes pretty often.. makes worlds best chocolate chip cookies and other dessert treats. other than that do Not let him into the kitchen to make things it will randomly catch fire

ooh he also makes little stuffed animals on occasion.. finds sewing to be relaxing but it can prove a bit difficult with his prosthetic... so he mostly just sews if he needs to patch up an existing stuffed animal; he has a little teddy bear from his childhood that he can't sleep without.. it's name is Bubby

puts matches out on his tongue for funsies

keeps a flask with him (it is filled with gasoline) (he has accidentally drank it more times than he likes to admit)

hey!! I always love when you post your artworks, so i wanted to ask: do you have a favorite technique? Do you have any wip or ideas that you haven't had time to work on yet?

I don't really have like.. any consistent techniques? I usually block out the general shape of what I'm drawing with a colour (or two) tho and use that as a guide!! Like that ⤵️

gonna ramble abt hlvrai appearance headcanons bc im trying to figure out how to draw everybody

gordon: exhausted rectangle. bulky even w/o the hev suit. taller than coomer, shorter than bubby, usually on par w/ benrey unless theyre fucking around. honestly even tho i draw him the most i still have NO IDEA how to draw him. FUck you can never take ponytail gordon away from me. he has a short but fluffy ponytail and its cute. also has messy bangs, might bandwagon onto “gordon has a grey streak in his hair from stress” i keep waffling on his arm bc like. im v inconsistent w if he gets it back or not, or has a prosthetic, or w/e looks either tired or exasperated 75% of the time, like he Does have an emotional range but his resting face is Tired post-resonance cascade

benrey: long hair, really messy and always tangled. somehow fits it under their helmet. looks human, if rather pale. skin has a slight grey tinge to it. also looks like they havent slept in 5 years. eyes are in permanent shadow even w/o their helmet but it just makes them look More Tired. eyes always half-lidded & expression apathetic. starts looking Less human at certain parts, like having sharp teeth when being threatening or doing the Evil Cackle. has the thing where their eyes glow in the dark if you shine a flashlight at them (it scares the shit out of gordon). teeters on the edge of the uncanny valley scale relative to other people is always inconsistent, changes height when no one’s looking to mess with them and it’s always either very minimal or “something’s different about benrey but hell if i know what” or “wait since when was benrey That tall”. not really sure abt bodyshape so that also might be a bit fluid black hair, eyes are a v dark colour

tommy: very tall and lanky w/ super curly hair & freckles! might have a tooth gap idk, im kinda back-and-forth on it. been trying to draw him Actually Looking Like An Adult bc like. he’s older than gordon. i dont really have any hcs for species stuff so he’s just like. human appearing. WAIT ACTUALLY his eyes do the glow-in-the-dark thing bc i think thats cool. like, actually glowing, not like benrey’s “shine a flashlight at me and shit your pants” thing. his ability to survive despite his high caffeine&sugar intake might also be a biological perk tommy is just. long. long face, long nose, long body. tallest of the science team unless benrey cheats. brown eyes, but they glow kinda orange-yellow in the dark i kinda wanna give him like. sneakers w/ loosely tied laces but im worried abt making him Too Childlike in vibes bc of like. yeah. i just also want the 3 scientists to have Some kind of unique outfit quirk

coomer: looks soft but is actually strong as hell. he’s built like a bear. shortest member of the science team but could easily carry all of them at once (except maybe benrey, depending on benrey’s size) has no exterior signs of his cybernetic enhancements so gordon thought he was joking until the PowerLegs:tm: thing where he just. fucking launched himself like 100 feet. probably has like, synthetic skin over it or something iunno wears tacky hawaiian shirts under his labcoat and just. generally has Fun Grandpa vibes. rolls up his sleeves at some point and then they just Stopped Existing w/ the activation of superplayer very round shapes! hair is very fluffy. eyes are a dark green (same as “ominous text” colour)

bubby: second tallest behind tommy, also a bit noodley but not as exaggerated. tommy is long circle, bubby is Long Rectangle im really torn on drawing him with Sharp Teeth bc i love seeing other ppl draw him w/ that but it didnt really vibe with me when i drew it? so i dunno im workshopping it i guess. he does have eyes behind his glasses but his glasses are mostly opaque so its hard to tell sometimes. gordon isn’t sure how he sees has like.. god idk what to call them. the term coming to mind is “platform shoes” but there’s no way thats it. ACTUALLY YEA GOOGLE SAYS IT IS bubby wears platform shoes to be Even Taller but is STILL shorter than tommy

also some ocs under the cut fdhgkzjdfgh

andi: just over 5 feet tall, very chubby / potato-shaped. this man has No muscle mass. hair is Ridiculously fluffy & is dyed orange (his natural colour is brown). his right eye is a bit fucked up so he’s always squinting with it and it makes his expressions look really weird gdzhkdjghdfj he probably needs glasses but keeps leaving them at his desk which is definitely not something i do he’s the shortest & youngest member of the science team. he’s just barely shorter than coomer. coomer can also definitely throw him straight up and he’d never be seen ever again has his labcoat sleeves pushed up / rolled up (its inconsistent) to the elbow, & wears plain colour t-shirts under it. his boots help him feel taller some of our self-insert ocs have scars on their arm bc of personal shit and im still undecided on if andi has them too. if he does, he gets them during the black mesa incident

john: short kinda-curly hair, but has been considering growing it out post-game bc of like. gordon reasons. kinda scruffy-looking. less square than gordon is + different build, but theyre the same height at least. brown eyes, hair’s darker than gordon’s, skintone is lighter. doesn’t quite have the “resting tired face” p much exclusively wears beanies and hoodies, doesnt care too much abt his appearance so he looks like a Trash Man. starts rolling up his right sleeve post-act 3 to remind himself that his arm is, in fact, there (although he has difficulty using it bc his brain gives him like 500 errors)

God But i don’t wanna add it so people don’t know that Benny doesn’t actually die. Did you guys actually think that I was gonna kill off Benrey? Did you actually think I was gonna kill any of the science team? bro. Trust me. I promise. I don’t hurt people that badly in long term fics all that often. All of my super sad things? Like Bad Ending? One chapter. I don’t wanna do sad endings all that often. They make me super sad bro. Like sometimes I can’t even dish it.

Also, if y’all wanna draw that scene that I technically haven’t written at the time of writing this bit (i’ve written chapter fifteen rn) if you wanna draw that scene with Gordon sobbing on the supposedly-dead Benrey with Darnold at his side? I would die. In so many ways.

Don’t feel obligated to do any of this btw!! Like, just you guys enjoying The Riverbank is very wonderful! and I love it! a lot! I freaking love reading all your comments and getting Oliver freaking out in discord when I post chapters, it’s all very wonderful!! So don’t like? Feel obligated to draw anything for this story, especially if you don’t wanna draw the OCs. I may love them with all my heart (beats arcturus into the ground) but I get only wanting to do things with canon characters!

I can’t handle killing characters guys. Arcturus can die tho, fuck him. Like? You can trust me, I’m a sad bitch, Capella is FINE! This is post epilogue, so like... yeah. It’s not FINE fine, but it is alive still... kinda. I have no clue if I plan to write more with this verse and find a way to save and bring Capella back from the dead, but for now... stasis vibes. Thats where it can stay. Until I figure out... what the fuck to do :)

This is right before writing chapter 20, but earlier during a call, Oliver revealed to me that he is convinced I’m going to kill Benrey. I mean, he’s right? temporary character death is a thing after all. He’s just convinced it’s gonna be a permanent death which, babe. Why would I do that to you?

Which also leads me into this, specifically targeted. You said that I told you I was going to kill one of the science team, but that has NEVER been part of the plan so I have no clue where you got that? I did say I was going to kill at least one person, out of the science team and OCs, so maybe you just didn’t hear the second part? Either way, I just let you suffer through thinking that. Love you!!

guys. Benrey can’t die. I mean, he can die, but he’ll get better. Like it’s so funny to me rn to watch y’all reacting like this, when like. Bro. He can’t die. It’s Benrey. I’m not gonna kill Benrey because he’ll come back and get better bro. He’s fine.

I mean he is gonna be a skeleton for like, a week, while he fixes his body, but :/. It’s fine. They can def cuddle a skeleton.

There’s gonna be a lot of Sans Undertale jokes in Gordon’s future though.

✨ what draws you towards your hyperfixation? what is interesting about it? not gonna lie i think hlvrai just does something to people. like that post that’s like “there are two stages of getting into hlvrai: 1. what the fuck am i watching, 2. brainworms” was pretty much my experience. i remember super early on i think i wanted to make ocs based on it but i kinda forgot about that XD it’s... an idea to return to definitely anyway like, i think for the most part it’s the humor. it’s just something so funny and dumb that i think i just really need as of late, quarantine’s drivin me mad lolol. and i think part of it’s also that it’s such a... not-traditional fandom that there are a lot of different ways you can interpret it and takes you can have. people can make a story out of anything and i think that sums up the hlvrai fandom real well

💢 what do you NOT like about your hyperfixation? is there something you would want to change about it? i... honestly can’t think of much, because even stuff i personally don’t like or can’t jive with i can still respect as working for what hlvrai is and i wouldn’t want them to change it by any means. do i understand the references to the canon half-life series? no, but they still have a place there for people who do. would it be cool to see more character development? yeah, but that’s not the kind of series hlvrai is and if it was played completely straight it’d just get jarring i guess... hm. i mean it’s not something i can fault the creators for because they could nOT have anticipated their series getting big or people caring this much about their characters’ LORE but it makes me sad that a lot of bubby’s lore stuff was cut in the edited streams. he’s such a cool character but i think people tend to overlook him because not much about him was revealed in the edited streams and he doesn’t have a “gimmick” as noticeable as everyone else’s. give the man some love!

💎 are there any fun facts or trivia that you would like to share? okay DON’T READ THIS PART BECAUSE YOU HAVEN’T WATCHED THE FINALE YET GO GO SCROLL SCROLL SCROLL SCROLL LIKE THE WIND AND DONT LOOK BACK !!!!! nothing fucks me up more than benrey saying “let tommy go it’s ok!” in the boss fight when tommy was being attacked was not meant to be him telling the skeletons to spare tommy, but him telling the science team to let tommy die. and the other characters didn’t realize this and just thought he was being nice. i think about that a LOT my first hlvrai au concept i never did anything with was one where tommy actually did die there. im not sure if i’ll return to it but man that whole bit fucks me up and i wish people acknowledged it more XD

Pairing: Seth Levine x MC (Jessica Parker)

Book: Red Carpet Diaries (Book 3, between Chapter 16 and 17)

Summary: Jessica has a heart-to-heart with Seth’s mother prior to the wedding, aka ArgyleMN attempts to add any sort of emotion or heart to RCD3.

Author’s Note: Written for RCD appreciation week, Day 3 (family). I can’t believe I almost missed that this was happening, but I’m glad I saw and was able to participate! Even though I pretty well hated book 3, I will always have a soft spot for one Seth Levine! So consider this part of my ongoing mission to add depth where PB gives us none.

Jessica strolled out of her bedroom, tying her robe at her waist. She might be tired from the Ninradell press junket, but since Seth’s parents were staying with her while in town for the fan premiere event, she wanted to get up earlier than usual. Her parents had ingrained in her the importance of being a good host, so as nice as it would be to sleep in, she knew she needed to get up, get the coffee brewing, and breakfast cooking. However, as she wandered towards the kitchen, she was surprised to hear the sink running. She rounded the corner, and sure enough, there was Rachel Levine, already showered, dressed, and filling up the coffee pot.

“Good morning, dear,” said Rachel, glancing up and smiling as Jessica entered the kitchen, “I hope you don’t mind that I’m getting a pot of coffee going. I’m an absolutely useless lump until I get my morning caffeine hit.”

Rachel spun away at that, pouring the water into the coffee maker’s basin and opening the closest cupboard, clearly looking for the coffee. Jessica walked to a cabinet two over from where Rachel was looking and grabbed the coffee, moving to finish prepping the pot, but Rachel took the coffee from her hands before she could object.

“Let me; I insist,” said Rachel, adding the coffee to the built-in filter.

Jessica shook her head, wrapping her robe around herself tighter. It was a little embarrassing to be caught by Seth’s mother in her pyjamas. She’d only met his parents twice prior to this trip, once when they came out to visit Seth in LA not long after they had officially become boyfriend and girlfriend, and the other time when she joined Seth in Ohio for Yom Kippur last year. And while his parents had been kind and attentive, she’d stayed in a hotel for that visit, the Levine household full to the brim with Rachel’s extended family.

“I was just about to get one brewing before I got cleaned up, but I guess 6:30 wasn’t early enough.”

Rachel just shook her head, “You have to realize that this is 9:30 am on my internal clock, and I normally get up for work at 6 am.”

“But you’re my guests. I should-”

“Exactly, you are being very generous and hosting us. You are doing plenty already.”

“I told you, I have the space. It’s no big deal.”

“My dear, instead of getting into a ‘who-is-more-Midwestern’ contest with me, why don’t you just take a seat and let me make you a cup of coffee?”

Jessica smiled tightly at that. “I was actually going to go hop in the shower,” she mumbled, not wanting to draw anymore attention to her state of dress.

“Nonsense, this is your home. Don’t feel like you need to get all glamorous at this hour just for us.”

“But Rachel-”

“Family can eat breakfast in their PJs together, dear. Now, take a seat.”

Jessica felt like this could go on indefinitely, so she relented, climbing onto one of the stools at her island, watching as Rachel bustled around the kitchen, clearly making herself at home as she pulled out two mugs, sugar, and the creamer. She placed them all in front of Jessica as she found them. The aroma of coffee soon filled the air, the gurgle of the coffee maker the only sound. As soon as the carafe held enough for two cups, Rachel pulled it out and poured some into the mugs, returning it to the maker before she leaned across the island and looked at Jessica.

“Seth doesn’t need to stay at a hotel, you know.”

“Excuse me?”

“While Tony and I are in town. He can stay here as well; he doesn’t need to pretend you aren’t living together.”

Jessica blinked, taking in Rachel’s words. “He honestly doesn’t live here.”

“Really?” Rachel asked, eyebrows flying up her forehead as she gave her head a little shake. “Why not?”

“Your parents, actually.”

“Seriously?” Rachel’s disbelief was evident in her voice as she stirred a splash of creamer into her coffee.

Jessica laughed, “Seriously. I asked him if he wanted to move in after he proposed. He told me he could never do that to his Bubbie.”

It was Rachel’s turn to laugh, shaking her head as she added some sugar to her coffee. “My son, I tell you. Scandalizing them by moving to LA and telling them he had not gone to synagogue once? Sure. Going out with gentiles, men, and gentile men? Oh, he’d tell them stories of his dates without shame. But living with his fiancée before marriage, something my parents would have no way of knowing? That’s where he draws the line!”

Jessica shrugged as she sipped her coffee. It had thrown her when Seth had told her he couldn’t live with someone until he was married, but it wasn’t a big deal. They had their entire lives to live together, and with how busy they’d both been over the past few months, adding a move on top of everything was just an extra stress they hadn’t needed. Now that the press junket for Ninradell was winding down, she and Seth were going to start moving some of his things over in earnest. It was why his parents couldn’t stay in his spare room - half-filled boxes covered the bed and floor there.

“Yeah, it’s what he wanted. To be honest, I kind of figured it was partially for your benefit as well.”

Rachel scoffed at that, shaking her head. “I am not my mother, thank you very much.”

“I didn’t mean to-”

“Relax, dear. I get it. My parents and my sister certainly made their old-fashioned views known at Yom Kippur.”

“I’m kind of surprised they’re coming to the wedding, to be honest.” The statement slipped out of Jessica’s mouth before she fully thought it through. She did not know Seth’s mother well enough to be that blunt about her family, but hearing Rachel talk so dismissively about them had unlocked something inside of Jessica, something she’d shoved down and buried deep in her soul. This fear that to Seth’s family, she would never really be accepted, simply because of her religion. And while she knew none of that mattered to Seth, she didn’t like the thought of being the black sheep daughter-in-law.

But if Rachel found Jessica’s statement insulting, she didn’t let it on, instead reaching over and placing her hand on top of Jessica’s. “You have been very accommodating to my family, even though they haven’t been exactly warm or welcoming. Seth told me you made sure there was going to be a clearly marked kosher buffet, that you arranged for there to be a chuppah, that you will break a glass. I know this is for the benefit of my family, so thank you.”

“Oh, it’s nothing-”

“My dear, we both know it’s not nothing. Stop being Midwestern and just accept my gratitude, okay?”

Jessica smiled at Rachel and nodded, glad that even if Seth’s extended family didn’t fully approve of their relationship, at least his mother seemed to be on board. She moved to grab her coffee and take another sip, but Rachel wasn’t finished just yet, clasping her hand more tightly.

“I’m not just thankful for what you’ve done for this wedding. When Seth told us he was moving to Hollywood all those years ago, I was worried. Worried that no one was going to protect my sensitive, anxious, insecure little boy. Worried that this harsh industry would chew him up and eat him alive. Every year he stayed out here, I wasn’t sure whether it was good that he was surviving and making his way, or if this place was just breaking him so slowly, he didn’t even realize it.

“But you have been such a steady part of his life the past couple of years. The stories he’s told me... well, I finally felt that there was someone out here who was looking out for him. So thank you, thank you so much for taking care of my baby boy.”

Jessica didn’t know how to respond, so she just gave Rachel’s hand a little squeeze. Rachel coughed at shook her head slightly, “Sorry dear, for going full sentimental at this hour! I promised Tony I would hold it together until the wedding.”

“And yet, I knew you wouldn’t,” said Seth’s father, surprising Jessica as he entered the kitchen, carrying a white bag, Seth trailing behind him. Jessica cocked her head, surprised to see her fiancé this early, but he just smiled and kissed her cheek, dropping onto the stool next to her.

“I got drafted into a pastry run,” he said, answering her unasked question, “He claimed he wanted to spend a little time together, but I think he just wanted easy access to your building.”

Tony rolled his eyes at his son’s joke, but one part of his statement stood out to Jessica.

“Wait, you got pastries? I had food to cook breakfast for you two,” Jessica said, glancing between Seth’s parents as his father set the bag from the bakery down on the counter.

“Don’t even try,” said Seth, shaking his head as he grabbed a bear claw out of the bag, “She’s never gonna let you cook.”

Rachel sighed at that, but didn’t contradict Seth as she handed him a mug full of coffee before she grabbed a croissant for herself and a hard roll for her husband. And so as the sun crept up into the sky, filling the penthouse with a bright glow, the four of them sat around the counter, enjoying a simple breakfast. The modern furnishings and high rise views were the only thing that kept this from feeling like an average Midwest morning. There was no pressure, no pretense, instead just a family clearly making an effort to welcome their newest member, even if it was a few weeks away from being official. And that was enough ease Jessica’s mind and let her feel like a normal girl from Iowa once again, if only for a moment.
